Arc'teryx Beta AR Stormhood Jacket (2023): first impressions 

Since we tested this jacket, Arc'teryx has released an updated version that features PFAS-free Gore-Tex and a new pattern to cut down on waste. For this article, we've tested the previous iteration, first released in 2023.

The story of the Arc'teryx Beta AR actually goes all the way back to the year 2000, with the release of the brand's first "all-rounder" jacket. Various updates over the years have made the jacket lighter, stronger, and more watertight, and with the 2023 edition came the addition of the awesome Stormhood.

Using the ultra-durable Gore-Tex Pro waterproof membrane, this is a hardshell waterproof jacket that's virtually bombproof against wind and precipitation, but relatively light compared to its competition. Arc'teryx Watertight Zippers throughout ensure there are no weak points where water can leak in.

The main talking point is that Stormhood, which is big enough to wear over your ski helmet, but has two cinches at the back to draw it tight when you're just wearing a beanie, and they're big enough to operate with gloves on. A high collar protects your face when it's fully zipped up, though without a helmet, there is a slight gap at either side where some rain or snow gets in if the wind is howling.

The fabric is pliable enough to allow for lots of movement, and while, like any hardshell, it's not the most breathable for summer conditions, it is equipped with pit zips and makes an excellent choice for most mountain pursuits the rest of the year.

The regular cut allows plenty of room for multiple layers, and the design is lower at the back for extra protectio,n which comes in handy if you want to wear it for skiing. The hem is adjustable, as are the cuffs, when you need to call in reinforcements against the weather.

With two hand-warming pockets and an inner chest pocket that's just big enough for the largest Android phones, you'll have plenty of available storage in theory, though the outer pockets become a bit redundant once you're wearing a backpack. This is something a two-way zipper would help with.

As usual, when it comes to Arc'teryx, this jacket is extremely pricey, which does make it out of reach for many. But for the price, you do get the highest quality build, and thanks to the Arc'teryx ReBIRD program, a jacket that should last for decades.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Stormhood Jacket (2023): in the field 

I've been hiking in the Arc'teryx Beta LT jacket for a couple of years, which offers really great, lightweight weather protection, but for the trek to Everest Base Camp, I was aware I'd need more protection, so I took the Beta AR Stormhood.

I made sure to test it out on some rainy hikes in Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales before I left for Nepal, and even though we were quite lucky with the weather on the way to Base Camp, I did end up wearing it against a couple of afternoon thunderstorms and at the highest altitudes over my fleece for wind protection.

I also recently brought it along on a five-day thru-hike in the Lake District, where I ended up wearing it for the last three days against some torrential rain and heavy showers.

Here's how it performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a Small, which is my usual size. While previous Arc'teryx Beta jackets have proven to be a little roomy on me in that size, I think this is just about perfect. It's not quite as neat as it might be, but I can easily wear it over a base layer and a down jacket, which is most important when it comes to choosing a shell for wintery conditions.

The drop tail covers my bum completely for added protection, the sleeves come to my knuckles, and the collar up to my nose when I'm zipped up. It's not quite as long as the Beta LT, but I think it's more functional at this length and wouldn't change a thing.

Weight and packability

This isn't the lightest waterproof jacket I've tested, but considering it's a three-layer hardshell, it's surprisingly light and packable, which came in handy on the trek to Base Camp, since it mostly stayed packed away inside my backpack and didn't take up too much room.

I've tested lighter waterproofs, such as the Rab Firewall Alpine, but that's meant for milder conditions and moving fast. In build and performance, this is pretty similar to my Mountain Equipment Makalu Jacket, but it is quite a bit lighter, which makes it more appealing for longer expeditions.

Weather protection and breathability

This jacket is nearly bulletproof against the wind, rain, and hail, with one exception, which I'll get to in a moment. I've had it on in a couple of brief but heavy downpours in the Himalayas, but the biggest test was during a five-day, 75-mile trek where I saw a lot of very wet weather and worse it for about eight hours a day.

Despite some intense rain, the fabric hasn't wetted out yet and the hood is pretty fantastic in a storm. I've tested it with my climbing and skiing helmets, and it fits easily over both. Sometimes I find helmet-compatible hoods to be a little too large without a helmet, but this one can be adjusted to be quite snug and cocoon-like, with toggles I was able to adjust while wearing thick gloves in Nepal, and a nice laminated peak to keep the rain out of my eyes.

The only issue, which is one I've found common with helmet-compatible hoods, is that there is a slight gap on either side of my jaw, which I've discovered does let precipitation in if the conditions are especially nasty, and after hiking in heavy rain I did notice that my chest area was soaked through.

Overall, it excels at wind protection, and for the highest days in the Himalayas, where we were dealing with some gusts but also climbing quite vigorously, I found it to be a better choice than pulling on a down jacket. I ended up wearing it for several days of trekking over my fleece in the early mornings and staying quite comfortable.

That said, for milder Scottish summer conditions, it's about as breathable as I expect a hardshell to be, and that's to say it's not very breathable if you're climbing. The pit zips do help, and I've tested worse, but I'd probably choose the LT over this one during the summer months at lower altitudes.

Storage and other details

The hand-warming pockets are nice and deep, so they're functional from that perspective, but as is so often the case, they're not really usable once I've got my backpack on. Fortunately, the inner pocket was plenty big enough for my iPhone, and is just big enough for my new Android, which means I can keep my phone protected but close for pictures.

The other main detail to mention is the addition of a RECCO reflector built into the hood, which has been a feature of the Beta AR since 2020. This won't activate if you get lost or injured in the backcountry, but it could make you more searchable if disaster strikes, and I like to think that every little bit helps out there in the wild.

Arc'teryx is one of the most in-demand outdoor brands at the moment, crafting top-notch hiking, trail-running, and winter sports gear to help outdoor goers do what they love most in comfort. So, you can imagine my surprise when I found one of their dependable waterproof jackets reduced by almost $180.

The Men's Arc'teryx Beta AR jacket aims to combine breathability with dependable protection from the elements, and is now available for just $420.93 at REI.

Its main body is made from Arc'teryx's lightweight N40d Most Rugged fabric, and protects you from the elements with three-layer Gore-Tex waterproofing. Gore-Tex membranes are a very popular choice for outdoor gear, due to their reliable waterproofing and decent breathability.

Ventilation is enhanced by large pit zips on either side of the jacket, which allow for some much-needed airflow as you get a sweat on.

An embedded RECCO reflector is also a handy touch that could come in useful in emergencies. The small battery-free transponder responds to detector signals, so search and rescue can locate you in dense wilderness and snowfall.

Picture it: you’ve been hiking in a steady rain for half an hour when you start to get the sneaking suspicion that, despite the weather shield promised by your pricey Arc’teryx rain jacket, your shoulders are soggy. A quick check confirms that, indeed, your base layer has two dark patches where you should be dry. What do you do?

A lot of people would decide it’s time for an upgrade, even though they may have spent upwards of $400 on a high-quality model like the Arc’teryx Beta LT (or as much as $600 on the Beta AR Stormhood). That old jacket might end up on eBay (or worse, the landfill), and you could form the opinion that Arc’teryx jackets aren’t very good, even though they’re considered some of the best waterproof jackets around.

But if you take that same jacket into an Arc’teryx ReBird center – which would be a more reasonable response given its high price tag – you might discover that the only problem with your jacket is that it needs a good wash.

Lather, rinse, repeat?

Last week, I went to the opening of a new Arc’teryx store in Manchester – located in the north of England, it’s the brand’s first UK store outside of London, and it joins 25 stores across the globe that now have an in-house Arc’teryx ReBird service center.

Shortly after arrival, I’m ushered upstairs to the second floor, where product guide Aaron Rodriguez walks me through what might happen if I were to present him with a jacket like I described above. For demonstration purposes, he pulls out an old Arc’teryx Zeta LT in forest green that’s been dropped off by its owner to repair a tear in the back. The Zeta is no longer in production, having been replaced by the ultralight Beta, which is a good sign that this jacket has seen plenty of wear and tear.

Rodriguez takes the jacket to one of several machines behind the counter and clamps a section of the fabric between two plates. With the flip of a switch, the machine starts forcing water upwards into the fabric at a rate far more forceful than the heaviest rainstorm, causing it to bulge under the pressure.

“You can see that the water isn’t getting through, so we know the jacket is still waterproof,” says Rodriguez, before shutting off the machine.

He goes on to explain that the reason the jacket’s hypothetical owner might have damp shoulders while hiking in wet weather is that the pores in the Gore-Tex membrane that allow sweat to escape get clogged over time if the jacket isn’t washed. So that dampness that you’re experiencing on a rainy day could just be your own sweat building up on the inside of your jacket.

“People don’t want to wash their waterproof jackets, so they’re surprised when we tell them that’s what they need to do,” says Rodriguez.

It’s true that many of us fear washing off that prized DWR that makes rain bead on our jackets, but that’s something that can be restored simply by learning how to reproof your gear. And if you don’t feel confident washing your expensive jacket? Drop it off at a ReBird store and they’ll do it for you – on the day of my visit, store manager Elena Fanton says they’ve taken in a dozen jackets for a wash and reproof.

Keeping gear in play for longer

The wash and waterproof service is all part of Arc’teryx’s circularity initiative, which aims to keep its gear in play for longer, from design to post-purchase. Sven Radtke, general manager of Arc’teryx Europe, tells me that the Canadian brand’s focus on circularity begins in development.

“In the beginning, it was all about freedom of movement and functionality in design,” says Radtke.

“Now we have a repair service, our design teams are always considering how they can create the same functionality, the same freedom of movement, and make it easier to repair.”

That can mean designing jackets using panels that can be replaced in their entirety, which means every rip, rub, and tear doesn’t have to spell the end for the life of the garment.

Once the design process is complete, the brand uses more sustainable production methods like dope dying instead of traditional dying to cut down on water usage and joins many brands in switching to the new PFAS-free Gore-Tex membrane. And if you’re truly ready for a new jacket or pair of rain pants? Arc’teryx is developing a program to trade in your old gear, which is already available in North America.

All about circularity

Outdoor enthusiasts can be especially guilty of loving the planet to death, thanks in part to our endless appetite for new gear and also to our tendency to put our kit through the ringer. This isn’t just speculation – a 2018 research article claims our carbon footprint is 40 percent greater than that of athletes from other individual sports, and participants in nature sports (e.g. hiking and trail running) have the highest emission levels of all.

It’s not because we don’t care about the planet. It’s just that a jacket that comes with you on your weekly hike is going to take more of a beating from your backpack straps, thorny bushes and sharp gear like ice axes than one that you wear to pick the kids up from school and that’s perhaps how this particular Zeta LT in front of me has ended up with an inch-long slash in the back.

That hole means that, unlike with the clogged pores, the jacket really isn’t waterproof any longer, but it’s still no reason to toss it. Rodriguez opens one of dozens of drawers behind the ReBird counter to reveal patches in a multitude of colors. He selects one that matches the green jacket, turns to another machine – these machines are built in-house by the Canadian brand – and pulls a lever down to apply heat and fuse the patch. A few seconds later, the hole in the jacket is gone, and the patch is barely visible to the naked eye.

A menu of services behind the counter advises me that a fix like this should take 15 minutes, though in reality it’s far less, and it’s completely free. The same goes for minor zipper repairs, buckle replacements, and really any small repair that doesn’t require stitching – those types of fixes require sending your item off and may incur a small fee if, for example, the damage was sustained using your gear for a purpose other than that for which it was designed.

Some customers like to choose a patch that’s a different color from their jacket in an ode to the gnarly adventure that earned them the patch in the first place, and Fanton says they’re happy to oblige – but they won’t replace a perfectly good zipper with another color just for aesthetic reasons.

“We don’t offer personalization. This is about circularity and keeping the gear in play,” explains Fanton.

“As long as it’s Arc’teryx, we’ll fix it. It doesn’t matter if you bought it on the other side of the world.”

Make it last

Arc’teryx isn’t the only brand offering in-house repairs these days.

Osprey will repair your backpack no matter how long ago you bought it, Rab and Mountain Hardwear both have service centers to repair packs, sleeping bags and apparel, and Danner’s recrafting site will re-sole your favorite hiking boots to increase their mileage. But compared to some of those services, which come with a fee or entail mailing your item away, the ReBird Service Center does stand out to me as being particularly accessible and efficient.

Of course, while gear manufacturers like Arc’teryx can work from their end to use more sustainable production methods and offer care and repair services, a large degree of the responsibility here does fall on our own shoulders.

The better you care for your gear, the longer it’s likely to remain in the field, and that’s the best way to keep kit out of the landfill – and cut down on the costs of your outdoor kit too.

It's been 25 years since Arc'teryx first launched the Beta Jacket, but the Canadian brand still hasn't finished perfecting it.

The brand new Arc'teryx Beta AR, launching July 31, boasts a more sustainable approach to protecting you against the worst of the weather when you're pushing to the summit (or even picking the kids up from school).

The very first Beta jacket, which the brand describes as its all-mountain hardshell, came out all the way back in 2000. Four years later, a lighter version was released, while updates in 2007 and 2010 focused on making the seams and zippers more waterproof (the brand famously introduced the WaterTight zipper to the outdoor industry).

The 2013 Beta boasted more rugged fabric, while the jacket received emergency technology (an embedded RECCO reflector) in 2020 and the awesome StormHood in 2023, which keeps you totally sheltered when rain is mixed with a howling gale.

Could the Beta get any better? Arc'teryx certainly thinks so, and is calling the AR "the best yet."

Meet the Beta AR

For the next Beta evolution, Arc'teryx has, unsurprisingly, gone all in on sustainability. We say it's unsurprising because the brand is known for its efforts to improve the circularity of its gear with initiatives such as its ReBird program.

So what's different? Probably the most key update is that the Beta AR features the new PFAS-free Gore-Tex waterproof membrane. You can learn more about this in our article on the fabric, but suffice to say that it's made using a non-fluorinated process, so it's entirely PFC-free.

It’s more durable than its predecessor, but also 50 percent thinner than the previous membrane, which means it uses less resources in production, and Gore-Tex has switched to Dope Dying its fabrics, where the dying process takes place at the yarn level, meaning that far less water is used than dying the finished product. The membrane is bonded to fabrics containing recycled materials and treated with an FC-free DWR treatment.

In terms of the Beta AR, this doesn't actually mean the jacket is lighter than the previous design, but that's mostly because Arc'teryx has taken the opportunity to add in new features, such as helmet-compatible DropHood construction that lets you move your head without your vision being obscured and durable internal cordlocks in the hood for adjustability. They've also moved the hand pockets so you can accesss them when you're wearing your backpack, and that's a welcome improvement if ever we saw one.

Finally, the design team at Arc'teryx has revised the pattern of the jacket. They say it's still got a regular, articulated fit with room for layers, but in manufacturing, it substantially cuts down on waste, they tell us to the tune of "400 jackets worth of material in the production process."

The Arc'teryx Beta AR weighs 13.9oz (395g) in women's sizing and 16.2oz (460g) in men's sizing. It will be available from July 31 from XXS to XXL in multiple colorways and, no surprises, the price has gone up a little $650 / £600.

What about all those old Beta jackets?

Clearly, the updated Beta is good news for the planet going forward, but not if everyone tosses their perfectly good jacket in the landfill, so if yours still works, hang on to it, or use the Arc'teryx trade in program for an uprgade if you're in North America.

Similarly, it doesn't make sense for retailers to dispose of perfectly good jackets that already exist to make room for new, PFAS-free gear and the brand issued the following statement to us on this matter:

"Arc'teryx doesn't believe in sending good products to landfill, and is committed to reducing waste. Because of this, Arc'teryx will be selling through Legacy Product - that is, products produced before any legislation came into effect, which may contain PFAS - beyond the initial 2025 deadline, in accordance with any legislation."

So older model Beta jackets are no longer in production, but still available. We're telling you this because chances are you'll be able to get a good deal on an older (but still great) Beta jacket from Arc'teryx ReBird soon.

Arc'teryx has just dropped the latest in its line of Alpha climbing backpacks, and if you're a climber or mountaineer, you're going to want to sit up and take notice.

The Arc'teryx Alpha SL backpack is a 30L pack intended for rock, ice, and alpine climbing, and the big story is its astonishing strength-to-weight ratio. The Alpha SL is made using a material called Graflyte fabric, developed by Aluula Composites in Canada, that claims to be eight times stronger than steel for its weight and 100% recycle-ready.

The Canadian climbing brand says this slightly translucent white pack (not totally different in vibe to The North Face Phantom 38), has an unrivalled strength-to-weight due to unique construction layers of ultralight, ultra-strong polymer films. Aluula Composites says it fuses the films at a lower melt temperature, which makes bonding faster and more consistent, resulting in a waterproof and non-air-permeable material.

How light?

So, how light is it? At 15.7 oz (444g), it's considerably lighter than any 30L pack we've tested. There's simply no comparison, so we ended up weighing various household items and discovered that it's heavier than your phone but lighter than a Yeti Rambler 18oz water bottle. Perhaps more helpfully though, it's more than 8oz (200G) lighter than the Alpha FL 30.

What else is good?

That means when you go climbing, all you'll feel on your back is the weight of your gear, and that's a good thing too, since this pack is built to carry serious kit: think ice axes, cams, crampons and rope, not just an extra layer and your sandwich on a hike.

A roomy cylindrical main compartment holds the bulk of your gear and can be accessed from the top or via a handy side zip, and an integrated mini-lid automatically flips to cover it when closed to protect your gear and provide a secure rope carry. Leading outdoor brand Arc'teryx has announced details of its 2025 Academy series, which visits some of the most legendary mountain environments in the world to offer expert-led outdoor clinics.

The series kicks off in the UK's picturesque Lake District, home to craggy fells and windswept valleys, with the Arc'teryx Climb Academy May 24 - 26. This boutique three-day event features bouldering, trad climbing and scrambling clinics as well as wild dips and guided hikes. Climb Academy centers around Sticklebarn in Great Langdale with both camping and hotel lodging available. The Alpine Academy, taking place July 3 - 6, is a larger-scale event with over 1,000 clinic spots delivering skills-based instruction in alpine climbing, mountaineering and trail running under the shadow of Mont Blanc. For its third and final academy, Arc'teryx comes home to British Columbia and offers a second Climb Academy in Squamish, which is running August 22 - 25 with more details to be announced.

Arc'teryx might consider itself a climbing brand at heart, but if last night's 2025 footwear launch is anything to go by, the brand is going to be picking up the pace this year.

The Canadian brand unveiled four new footwear styles coming out this year, and three of them are engineered for technical mountain running.

First out is the Norvan LD 4, a trail running shoe that builds on the Norvan franchise with a reduced stack height for added stability (down to 25 mm in the heel, 19 mm in the forefoot), and a more durable, PFAS-free upper. Though toe protection is vital in a trail shoe, Arc'teryx has actually softened the toe box in the model to cut down on toe bashing when you're on the descent. The addition of a sock liner is intended to improve fit and increase comfort for long-distance runs.

The Norvan LD 4 will be available in March in both Gore-Tex and non-waterproof versions. We gave the Norvan LD 3 four stars for its bouncy, fun performance and are looking forward to getting the new model out to test over the next few weeks.

Also in the Norvan family, the winterized Nivalis arrives in September and it looks set to defy expectations of what a winter trail running shoe should be.

“Winter running shoes are clunky, overdesigned and stiff," says Pam McNelis, Global Footwear Development for Arc'teryx.

In comparison, she says the Novalis is "one of the lightest, weatherproof running shoes of its kind." At just 290 grams for a US 9.5, she's not lying about the weight and while we haven't got it out on the trails yet, it certainly looks like it's got the goods for harsh conditions. There's an over-ankle gaiter and Gore-Tex invisible fit to keep out snow and debris, custom lugs for tackling mud and snow and a seamless single-pull lace system you can use to get the perfect fit even with frozen fingers.

Perhaps the most exciting addition to the lineup is the Vertex Speed. We gave the Vertex Alpine nearly perfect marks for its performance as an approach shoe, but the new iteration is a new running shoe that the brand says you can also climb in.

“We’ve never been limited to traditional categories," says Josh Herr, Global Footwear Design when speaking about the shoe, which he says combines the efficiency of mountain running with climbing performance.

The first Vertex shoe was released six years ago and the brand went back to the drawing board to redesign the original. Over hundreds of test models and thousands of miles put in by Arc'teryx ambassadors like ultra runner Kat Drew, the brand devised this hybrid shoe which combines a softer heel for running with a stiffer midfoot for climbing.

Underfoot, a Vibram Litebase outsole sports zoned lugs which are larger in the forefoot for climbing while open, deep lugs under the heel deliver better traction when you're moving fast. The Matryx upper is woven into a flat knit gaiter with a sock-like fit that the brand says is breathable and flexible. We reckon this one could be perfect for climbing Half Dome and any mountain run with lots of rocky scrambling.

The Vertex Speed prototype has already seen four podiums and six FKTs in North America, and it's coming out of Beta this April.

Last but not least, if you're a diehard climber and not interested in fast-paced adventures, the brand has something new for you too.

The Konceal is an approach shoe that was born out of a challenge: to make a shoe that climber Paul McSorley can't break. This sturdy alpine shoe has a carbon shank for added stability and a Vibram XS Flash 2 outsole for confidence when smearing.

It's got a nubuck leather upper for breathability when things heat up plus an improved heel lock to help prevent blisters on long approaches. The new Konceal arrives this fall.

There isn't only one way to plan a ski trip, but these days, most of them involve more planes and automobiles than trains – so a new ski film set out to challenge that narrative. A stirring new documentary by Canadian brand Arc'teryx finds out just how far four skiers can get using only public transport – and the answer, it turns out, is pretty far.

Going East, which you can watch below, chronicles skiers Joi Hoffmann, Max Kroneck, Loic Isliker and Siliva Moser as they embark on the unusual three-week ski trip. While traveling by train in European cities is largely easy, doing so in the mountains is a different story.

Each member of the group travels by train from their respective home countries of Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy to Tarvisio in northern Italy. From there, they travel east across Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey using dozens of trains and buses, several metros and even a couple of trams exploring lines in resorts and the backcountry.

There are plenty of ski movies dropping on YouTube in any given winter, all delivering majestic footage of untouched lines and most detailing adventurous expeditions. A few, like In a Lifetime, also focus on climate change and sustainable skiing. But there is something different about Going East.

For starters, you'll get to see terrain that's not usually the focal point of ski films. In place of the Alps, Alaska and Antarctica you'll discover the desolate wilderness of Slovakia's High Tatras, bizarre Bulgarian ski resorts and vertiginous peaks of eastern Turkey.

It's also not all face shots and endless powder. There are snorkel days to be had, but there's also plenty of disquieting chattering in icy gulleys and measured bailouts when the skiers are confronted with concrete slabs of snow.

But it's the journey itself that makes this film unique and captures both the perks and pitfalls of slow travel. The skiers have time to slowly arrive and immerse themselves in each location, while the viewer gets evocative glimpses into far flung mountains and huts.

It should also come as no surprise that logistical nightmares abound – sleepless nights, buses that don't line up and comrades who get left behind. In the end, though, the trip turns out to be epic in the truest sense of the word and you may be left with the sense that 33 minutes wasn't quite long enough.

"I think traveling by public transport has taught us that the journey to go skiing is actually just as important as the skiing itself," says Isliker.

"Even though this trip started because we wanted to go skiing, without all those little moments in between the skiing this would have been a completely different trip."

From hiking to trail running, exoskeletons are all the rage right now.

These robotic devices usually strap onto your thighs and waist, to provide an extra boost and ease the burden on your legs. After years of development, several brands are launching their own exoskeletons to help people who otherwise couldn't get outdoors.

Earlier this month, trekkers in China got involved, strapping on exoskeleton braces to hike one of the nation's toughest hiking routes during a week long trial of an AI-powered exoskeleton developed by Kenqing Technology and the Taishan Cultural Tourism Group.

Mount Tai, in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong, has a notorious reputation. Hikers have to scale more than 7,000 steps at a steep incline to reach the 5,069ft / 1,545m summit. Unprepared tourists have been known to pass out or even clamber down on all fours.

There were 10 exoskeleton units available during the trial, and hikers could hire them for as little as 60 to 80 yuan ($8 to $11). Half of the people who opted to use them were reported to be 'elderly'.

“It really works,” 68-year-old hiker Li Chengde, told state-run Xinhua News Agency after climbing Mount Tai.

"It felt like someone was pulling me uphill."

Others weren't so impressed. CNN spoke to hikers who complained that the devices lacked sufficient power, and were "inconvenient", especially when making a bathroom stop.

Following their trial on Mount Tai, the devices are expected to hit the Chinese market next month.

An exoskeleton is a bit like an e-bike for walking, helping to reduce strain and make the outdoors more accessible, and Hypershell's long-hyped exoskeleton series is finally here. In comparison, the Hypershell X series starts at $799, which will still make it the most expensive piece of hiking equipment you own, but it's still hardly more than the Arc'teryx Alpha Jacket.

The move comes after the popularity of the label's Grotto Torque beanie – which featured an all over print of its abstract Arc’teryx bird logo. “Oh God,” I groaned to myself as I opened the news story about a new pair of exoskeleton hiking pants designed to “power” people uphill. We’ve already got folk using helium balloons to carry their backpacks uphill – do we really need external muscles too? What’s next, escalators up the mountain?

On second look, however, I realized that this particular product was a collaboration between a mobility technology company named Skip and the renowned outdoor brand Arc’teryx. I’ve spent a fair amount of time with Arc’teryx in recent years, at their Alpine Academy in Chamonix and more recently their Climb Academy in the Lake District, and I’m pretty sure they’re not in the business of helping people slack off when they’re in the mountains. Gear I've tested, like their Beta Jacket, is generally extremely high quality – albeit expensive – and technical. It’s designed for serious explorers, even if you just want to wear it around town.

After a breathless CNN article titled “Are these exoskeleton pants the hiking clothing of the future?” I decided to approach Arc’teryx myself to find out what these futuristic hiking pants are – and who they’re actually meant for.

A pair of hiking pants that have carbon fiber wearable technology integrated into the outer shell that, according to the two brands, gives you a boost on the uphill by relieving up to 40 percent of your effort. In addition, they reportedly make you feel up to 30 lbs lighter – you know, how you feel when you get to the end of a long day on the trail and drop your heavy backpack on the ground.

On the downhill, they’re designed to support your knees. To the naked eye, it basically just looks like you’re wearing two leg braces over your regular hiking pants.

“Through this support, users will be able to go further, for longer, with reduced fatigue or discomfort," says Stuart.

The technology consists of a motorized wheel next to your outer knee that spins or turns as you move, triggering the boost when needed. To keep it working, a power pack sits at the belt line just at your lower back, which fuels these pants for up to three hours at a time.

I should note here that this isn’t the only exoskeleton technology to be making headlines – we’ve already reported on two other exoskeleton launches so far this year (one from Hypershell, one from Dnsys). What’s different about these is that the technology is integrated into a pair of hiking pants.

Who can benefit from this innovation?

So are exoskeleton pants like these really just to make hiking easier? While there’s nothing to stop a healthy person from using a pair to hike their next 14er, assuming you have a lot of money and don’t want to use your leg muscles, they’re really intended for people with mobility issues who want to get – or stay – active outdoors.

“Skip’s co-founders watched members of their family experience mobility challenges, and saw the direct link between their ability to move the way they wanted on a given day and literally every other aspect of their life – mental health, motivation, social connection,” explains Stuart.

“MO/GO is designed for anyone who suffers from mobility challenges which limit their ability to move in the mountains.”

This could be due to aging, fatigue or injury, and Stuart adds that he thinks the innovation is “an exciting step forward in creating more equitable access to the mountains.”

Personally, I can easily get my head around this as I spent a couple of years unable to hike or even walk properly after a knee surgery gone wrong. I also have parents in their late 60s and early 70s who recently got e-bikes and are suddenly rediscovering mountainous regions of Spain they haven’t seen in years. It’s brought them a whole new level of joy which I can only hope is as good for their health as the actual cycling.

Preliminary tests seem to be positive, too. Jason Ahn has a knee injury and was invited to try the MO/GOs out after being unable to hike for the past five years.

“After wearing these pants, it’s very life-changing actually. I don’t feel any pain in my knees, I don’t feel anything, my knees are good,” he says.

“To have something like this and just know that you can return to doing what you love is pretty powerful,” agrees another tester, Connor Hendry, while Trish Cizek says it has given her “the confidence to participate in more challenging hikes.”

Though it's early for this technology, studies have already been performed on how they improve user walking and running economy, and there's a wealth of scientific data that backs up any effort to get more people moving outdoors, known as green exercise.

How can you access this technology?

Based on testimonials, the MO/GO is a persuasive prospect when it comes to getting people with mobility issues up mountains – as long as you don’t want to hike for more than three hours anyway. But in addition to the time limit, there is another major drawback, and that is the price.

The MO/GO, which is currently available for pre-order only, is priced at $4,500, and while that will certainly make your eyes water if you’re just an avid hiker looking for new gear, it’s important to remember that this isn’t just hiking gear. It’s medical technology and perhaps could make the outdoors just a little more equitable.

Last year, when I was heading up a Scottish Munro on a rainy day, my bus driver forgot to stop at my stop and I ended up tackling the mountain from the other side, where there was no trail.

Arc'teryx is continuing its foray into the world of hiking footwear this fall with the launch of the Kopec GTX shoe built for fast and light adventures.

The Canadian climbing brand has long been known for its high-end apparel like the Beta LT Jacket and Gamma Pants, but its expansion into footwear is a newer adventure. We've enjoyed getting to know both the Aerios Aura shoe, which is a breathable hiker for warmer weather, and the Vertex Alpine GTX approach shoe for scrambling.

With colder weather and winter conditions on the horizon, we're going to need more protection than either of these styles can offer and the Kopec GTX promises to deliver exactly.

The Kopec shoe comes in two different cuts – a low trainer-style for more casual adventures and a mid-cut boot that offers some ankle protection. If you're hitting muddy trails and rocky terrain this fall, the Vibram Megagrip outsole and custom 4 mm lug pattern deliver a secure grip while for long days, there's 25 mm of cushioning under the heel with a dual-density midsole.

Made from CORDURA mesh, the upper is both durable and lightweight, while the all-important wide toe box gives you room to splay and pair these shoes with thicker hiking socks if you need to. With plenty of wet weather on the way, a PFAS-free Gore-Tex membrane keeps water out and lets you adventure in comfort with a lighter footprint.

Canadian climbing brand Arc'teryx turned a few heads this bring when they dropped the Kragg shoe, a slip-on that rather resembled a water shoe but was grippy and supportive enough to handle short approaches and comfortable enough to double as a recovery shoe. The heel even collapsed to transform the shoe into a slide, but of course, that was never going to work for cold weather.

“I didn’t have opportunities like this growing up, it just wasn’t tradition for us,” muses Haroon Mota, as we climb up a steep, rocky trail in the Lake District one Friday morning. For the moment, the sun is out, revealing the lush Great Langdale Valley spread out below us with rugged peaks hugging the edges of glittering lakes.

Soft-spoken and thoughtful, Mota is the founder of Muslim Hikers. We’re here to attend the Arc’teryx Climb Academy but while we’re both keen hikers and runners, it’s taken a certain amount of kismet for the two of us to end up on this trail together. After all, I’m white and most people on the trail look like me; Mota is a British Asian Muslim and for a long time, hiking was quite a lonely experience for him.

“Ethnic minority communities usually have a lack of awareness and confidence in outdoors spaces, and that’s primarily because they don’t have the outdoors embedded in their cultural lifestyle norms,” he explains.

Interestingly, we both received our initiation to hiking through the same channel – hiking trips organized during a time when there was more government funding available for getting high school kids outdoors in Europe. While I traveled he short distance to the Scottish Highlands from my school in Glasgow to ignite my love of the mountains, Mota grew up in Coventry, a city in the Midlands of England near Birmingham known for its diverse population, but not for abundant access to the hills. 

Aged 15, however, he went on a school trip to Snowdonia in North Wales and, like myself, got bitten by the hiking bug.

“If I didn’t go on that school trip, I don’t think I’d be here right now,” he admits. 

To cut a long story short, Mota took to the trails and never looked back. He graduated from Coventry University with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science in 2008. Four years later, he started running marathons. This year he completed the World Marathon Majors and ran his 10th London Marathon. Personally, the outdoors offers him a place for retreat and introspection.

“One of the things I appreciate the most about the outdoors is the mental space to process emotions, thoughts, feelings.”

However, he quickly learned to use the outdoors as a tool for good, becoming an avid charity hiker. He channeled his education and passion into a fundraising career leading challenge events for humanitarian charities that involved him in treks to Mount Everest and Kilimanjaro. In 2021, he received the Spirit of the London Marathon Award for his fundraising efforts at the event. Then the pandemic hit and events stalled.

In the fall of 2020, however, he was approached by Arc’teryx to become an ambassador for the brand, known for its high-end climbing and hiking gear. At that point, he admits now, he’d been hiking for 15 years and hadn’t heard of them, but when he saw their reach, he thought they might be able to help him in his quest to get more people like him outdoors.

“We know there's a distinct lack of representation in the outdoors but also in media,” says Mota.

“When I joined as an ambassador, I thought, ‘What’s the one thing I’m passionate about? Getting people outside. How can they help me? What can I do more of?’”

What Mota realized was that, despite having hiked all over the world, he was still lacking a sense of community. So he started the Muslim Hikers page on Instagram initially to create online community, normalize the outdoors and encourage people to free themselves from isolation. 

“Becoming an ambassador was an incredibly empowering experience for me. It made me feel like I could – I should – do more.”

Today, Muslim Hikers is the largest outdoor community for Muslims in the world, managed under an umbrella community interest company that also oversees Muslim Runners and Muslim Cyclists. The page has 46,000 followers and runs two or three hiking events each month in the UK designed to instill safety and confidence in the outdoors, open to anyone but targeting people who wouldn’t usually get outside. Every event sells out, drawing 150 people from all over the country, while Mota says he’s seen people travel from as far away as Europe and the US to join Muslim Hiker for a day hike, with many sharing stories of the group helping them to manage anxiety and depression.

“There’s a lot of power in community, and that’s what we’re seeing. People don’t just want to get outside, they want to connect with others,” says Mota.

Haroon Mota’s 4 tips for getting outside

It’s no secret that many minority populations face obstacles to getting outdoors, from not owning hiking boots or a waterproof jacket to not knowing where to go. However, the biggest barrier is within ourselves, according to Mota, who has the following advice for anyone seeking to spend more time in nature.

1. Be prepared to get out of your comfort zone

The key to taking the plunge in the first place, says Mota, lies in being willing to be a bit uncomfortable. That’s good advice for an activity where you’re bound to get sore feet and encounter less-than-ideal conditions. 

“The outdoors is for everybody,” says Mota.

This doesn’t have to mean walking 20 miles with blisters, but it does mean exposing yourself to experiences and surroundings that are unfamiliar. Begin with a short drive into the countryside to see some unknown territory, suggests Mota, then work your way up to some Type 2 fun. 

2. Join a hiking group

The truth is, not all of us feel thrilled at the idea of hiking with hundreds of people, but Mota says starting with a group – even if it’s not Muslim Hikers – is a great place to hone your skills before branching out alone.

“You can build your confidence in a group and that will give you independence and empowerment to go and do it alone.”

Use social media to search for groups in your geographical area, or that share similar values, and take the opportunity to ask questions and learn from other hikers.

3. Arm yourself with knowledge

If you didn’t grow up with mountaineers for parents, the chances are you’ll have lots of questions on what kit you need and how to use it, but the answers to those questions are no longer a safely guarded secret. In fact, you can usually find the answers to your hiking questions for free, online. 

“If you’ve got a burning question, the likelihood is that someone’s already asked it.”

4. Don’t assume you have to climb a mountain

Finally, Mota advises, even though Snowdonia remains one of his favorite hiking spots, don’t think that getting outside has to mean a gruelling climb to the rugged summit of a rocky peak. 

“You don’t necessarily have to climb a hill to get into the countryside.”

He recommends using hiking apps like AllTrails, Komoot and Strava to find trails near you – you might be surprised to discover that many are a lot closer, and more accessible than you think.

Encountering obstacles to getting into a sport like rock climbing isn’t exactly unusual. You're not likely to have the right gear, you don’t know where to go and when you do get out there, you don’t know what you’re doing. Just to add insult to injury, none of your friends are climbers. Oh, and then there’s that little detail of weather – rain and rock climbing don’t exactly go hand in hand.

I was one of the lucky ones, growing up in the 1990s when outward bounds trips for high schoolers were still publicly funded, and I had my first taste of getting on belay as a young teenager in the mountains of Scotland. I kept it up at a local indoor climbing wall for a few months, then went off to university and it would be over a decade till I squeezed my feet into a pair of climbing shoes again.

When I moved to Colorado in my late 20s, my friends spent their summers at the crag, so I quickly got myself a harness, helmet and shoes and spent the next ten years making up for lost time by multi-pitch climbing around Colorado and Utah.

I was fortunate to have friends who were pretty good climbers show me the ropes, literally, but needless to say I picked up some bad habits along the way, as we usually do when we learn from friends. Add to that the fact that, since moving back to Scotland, I’ve failed to find a climbing community, largely due to my own lack of trying, and I’m getting a little rusty. 

So when I was offered the chance to attend this year’s Arc’teryx Climb Academy, I jumped. This edition of the outdoor brand’s Academy series takes place in the Lake District, which if you don’t already know is England’s largest National Park. It’s known for its glaciated lakes and rugged peaks, so it would be appealing on its own, but last year I went to the Alpine Academy in Chamonix and it was one of my best outdoor experiences yet, so my hopes were high that this would be another winner.

It may not be totally clear by the name – in fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the event is for elite climbers – but the Arc’teryx Climb Academy is really about dissolving those barriers many of us experience in getting out on the rock in the first place. Specifically, it’s a place where you have access to gear, learn new skills and meet like-minded people. 

I arrive at the festival a day early while things are still getting set up and discover my lodgings for the weekend, the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, in a historic 1830s farmhouse. Next door is the Sticklebarn, an iconic pub and events space where the festival base camp is setting up on the patio and campers are beginning to pitch their tents. Beyond that, as far as the eye can see stretches the bucolic Great Langdale valley, a broad, glacial valley with exceptional views of the surrounding peaks and a popular setting for hikers and climbers.

In the morning, I set off on my first clinic, a hike taking in waterfalls and scrambling that starts and ends from base camp and in which we’ll be learning some basic map reading and navigation skills. I’m amongst an eclectic group of enthusiastic hikers and climbers, many of whom have come from urban areas and are keen to gain more mountain skills.

It’s not long before I discover that the man walking next to me is Haroon Mota, Arc'teryx ambassador and founder of the famed Muslim hikers group and we fall behind the group for a while as we chat about his mission to get more people of color outdoors using the tools of safety, confidence and community.

“There’s a lot of power in community, and that’s what we’re seeing. People don’t just want to get outside, they want to connect with others,” says Mota, a marathon runner and mountaineer who now organizes some of the largest hiking events in the UK.

Our hike ends at Stickle Tarn, a picturesque dammed lake where we strip off, pull on our water shoes, and cold water swim coach Gilly McArthur guides us in an extremely icy dip. McArthur, who’s preparing to start clinical research on the benefits of cold water immersion with the NHS, explains that just six cold water sessions in close proximity effectively blunt the effect of the cold and make it more tolerable. 

Together we sink in up to our shoulders, breathing deeply to regulate our nervous systems against the chill, then it’s time to sprint out, dry off and head back to base camp to warm up.

The next day, the festival is in full swing when I walk over to base camp after breakfast and excited climbers are milling around, grabbing granola bars, fruit and sandwiches from the lunch table and meeting their guides for the day. I’m signed up for roped scrambling but have managed to forget my helmet and harness. Like I said, I’m rusty. No worries, though, I just make a beeline for the free gear library where I rent brand new gear from Arc’teryx for the day.

This clinic involves a 10-minute drive and our group of six piles into our guide’s van where I chat with fellow attendees. Among them, a PhD candidate from Liverpoool who goes caving on her weekends and drove over just for this clinic and a new rock climber who’s recently moved to the Lake District and is hoping to gain skills and meet other people to climb with.

We hike to the ridgeline near Holme Fell which we’re going to spend the next couple of hours scrambling up using ropes, which is a new technique for me. We get our harnesses on and start with a quick refresher on tying a figure-eight knot. Then we’re paired up, roped together and start learning how to stay close, lead each other and use natural anchors like rocks and trees to secure our partners.

“Scrambling’s pretty serious whether you’re doing an alpine rocky ridge or scrambling here in the lakes so today we’ll think about looking after ourselves and introduce the use of ropes to help safeguard us over this kind of ground and maybe give us a bit more confidence,” explains Adrian Nelhams.

He’s our guide for the day and also the Director of the International School of Mountaineering – the event abounds with pros and elites, it’s just that they’re here in the fray with the rest of us mere mortals, getting stuck in and showing us the essentials.

The Academy isn’t just skills clinics – there are film screenings and diverting lectures, too. That evening I listen to Dr Natalie Brown, an athlete and researcher at Swansea University, discuss how to stay active through your menstrual cycle. In the morning, I rise a little early for a sunrise yoga class guided by a local teacher and stretch out my tired muscles. Then it’s time for one more clinic: outdoor bouldering, another activity I’m brand new to.

Our small group carries the crash pads for the five-minute walk over to the rock formations we’ll be practicing on and I get to know some new people, including students from China who were keen climbers back home but don’t see so much time on the rock while they’re living in London. 

Our guide shows us each problem, then has each of us try it several times before progressing to the next, more difficult one. Up above us, another group refines their trad climbing skills on a cliff side. The mood is high even though the weather isn’t exactly playing ball. A steady rain slowly soaks the granite and we huddle under a shelf beneath turns.

Arc’teryx might be able to remove a lot of the blocks to climbing with its Academy series, even if you can't afford their gear. Between public transport and carpooling, most people can get here and camping makes it an affordable trip to a location that’s otherwise pricey. 

Once you’re here, you’ll find access to gear and clinics suited to whatever level you’re at. But there’s only so much you can do about the weather. At least I’ve got my new Arc’teryx Beta LT jacket to keep me dry, I think, right before I bail and head to the pub.

Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket: first impressions

Arc'teryx has updated its hugely popular Beta LTE (lightweight) jacket for 2024, addressing our main concern with the previous model: sustainability. The new version uses the next-gen Gore-Tex ePE membrane. The new membrane is thinner and lighter than ePTFE, and free of PFCs that have have been identified as potentially hazardous the environment.

In all other respects, the new Beta LTE is very similar to the version we tested in July 2023 (and which earned a full five stars from our reviewer Julia Clarke). It has the same slim fit that makes it comfortable to wear under a backpack and eliminates bulk, and is smooth enough to slip easily over a base or mid-layer

It's long in both the sleeves and body, providing good coverage even for taller wearers, and the hemline dips at the back for added coverage. Unlike Julia I didn't find it long enough to sit on, but it's still a nice touch that prevents your backside getting wet when water runs off your backpack's rain cover. Toggles on the bottom hem allow you to tighten it to fit.

The sleeves can be tightened at the wrist using slim Velcro straps to keep out drafts and provide a snug fit around your hiking gloves.

There are two hand pockets fitted with waterproof YKK coil zippers, and one internal chest pocket that's just the right size for a phone, credit cards, and keys. Under the arms you'll find extra long pit vents with double-pull zippers, so you can adjust the ventilation to your exact preference. The Beta LT also has a built-in RECCO reflector to help rescuers find you if you're unlucky enough to be trapped in an avalanche.

There's a roomy hood that's easily large enough to fit over a hat or climbing helmet, and which cam be tightened using a toggle at the back that's simple to grab and use even with wet or cold hands. The hood can be adjusted around your face using an elasticated drawstring at the neck, and its stiffened rain peak keeps water well out of your eyes, even during downpours.

There's no avoiding the fact that this jacket is expensive, priced at $450/£400, but that's $50/£50 less than the previous iteration. It's also worth remembering that Arc'teryx offers a good warranty, and will repair or replace apparel that becomes damaged "for the practical product lifespan". Its versatility also helps justify the price tag; despite being a seriously technical jacket, the Beta LT's branding and design are understated, and you could easily make it your everyday outwear for wearing around town. 

Arc'teryx Beta LT Jacket: on the trails

The balance between weather-resistance and breathability is a difficult one to strike, and one that the previous edition of the Beta LTE achieved with ease. Thankfully the jacket's performance doesn't appear to have suffered for the change in material, and the 2024 version is equally good at keeping you dry and comfortable, despite the switch to a greener Gore-Tex.

The jacket's three layers are bonded together, with taped seams and welded zips that create an excellent barrier against rain and wind. I tested the Beta LTE during an exceptionally wet British spring, and water basically sheets off. I noticed little, if any wetting out at all.

The Beta LTE's updated three-layer is extremely thin, and the whole jacket packs down small enough to stuff into a backpack pocket (even if doing so with a garment costing $450 feels wrong on some level). I found the material a little on the noisy side when doing so, but the outside is as soft to the touch as ever, with a premium feel.

The slim fit means there's no unnecessary bulk, which is particularly helpful in windy conditions and when shrugging your backpack on and off, and the cut doesn't restrict freedom of movement. It's an ideal jacket for hikes that involve scrambling, and although thin, the fabric resisted scuffs and tears on rocks. I was concerned that it might prove delicate, but that definitely wasn't the case.

I also appreciated the fact that Arc'teryx hasn't skimped on length to cut down on weight. I'm 5'10" and sometimes find women's waterproof jackets too short in the sleeves, but the Beta LT was excellent, providing full coverage even without gloves. Nor did it ride up at the back when worn with a pack.

Overall, the new Beta LT is hard to fault, and if you're looking for a lightweight layer to protect you in even heavy downpours, it comes highly recommended – provided your wallet can take the hit.

Arc’teryx Vertex Alpine GTX: first impressions

My initial reaction when unboxing my Arc’teryx Vertex Alpine GTX approach shoes was to reach for my best sunglasses, because the ‘Euphoria & Graphite’ color scheme of my test pair is bright enough to sear the surface of your retinas. It also made me wince a little bit, since I knew was going to feel a tad self-conscious hitting the trails and crags in these loud loafers.

However, I should stress that these approach shoes from Arc’teryx are available in several other, far less attention-seeking colorways, and, as is always the case with this classy Canadian brand, the overall design and look is super stylish and sleek.

When it came to taking them on their maiden outing, it took some pulling to get these shoes on my feet, thanks to the tight-fitting integrated sock inner. This isn’t a criticism, per se, because – as I describe in more detail below – this design serves several excellent purposes, but it is something to be aware of. If you like a shoe that’s quick and easy to get on, look elsewhere. 

But, if you’re seeking an approach shoe that protects your feet and toes perfectly from the elements and tough technical terrain, and offers a good balance between performance-related rigidity and comfort, then read on, because I have been trail and crag-testing the Vertex Alpine GTXs to see how they perform in comparison to the best approach shoes currently on the market. 

Arc’teryx Vertex Alpine GTX: design and construction

The Arc’teryx Vertex Alpine GTX features a Cortura chassis constructed from recycled PET bottles, reinforced with TPU overlays, which form a rand that goes almost completely around each shoe, to protect the wearer’s foot from sharp rocks and other hazards. There’s a small toecap too, and the heel is cushioned by a midsole buffer that extends slightly beyond the natural range of the foot.

One of the defining features of this shoe is the integrated, stretchy sock inner, which replaces a traditional tongue but also extends right around the top of the heel to hug the whole foot, just below the ankle. There’s a fabric pull hook on the top of the heel (which is very much required when squeezing your foot into this shoe) and small pocket to tuck the tied laces into, positioned on top of the sock.

The whole upper is lined with a Gore-Tex membrane, to provide breathable waterproof protection from the soggy elements, such as rain, sleet and snow.

The midsole is made from a durable combination of EVA and polyolefin, and embedded within this material mix is a TPU shank that provides a good degree of stiffness across the length of the shoe (and acts as a rockplate too). There’s an 8mm drop on the Vertex Alpine GTX, which has a stack height of 18mm at the heel and 10mm at the toe.

Arc’teryx have worked with Vibram on this approach shoe, and the XS Flash 2 outsole is armed with strategically positioned 4mm lugs, designed to supply both traction and control when required on technical terrain.

Arc’teryx Vertex Alpine GTX: in the hills

I have been putting my Arc’teryx Vertex Alpine GTX approach shoes through their paces on technical hillside trails and crags in a mixture of conditions over the last month.

This is a new product for Arc’teryx, but as a brand built on a solid climbing heritage their design department obviously fully understands what’s required in an approach shoe, and where exactly it’s important to diverge from the features offered by a hiking shoe or, indeed a trail running shoe. (Interestingly, the marketing blurb references the Vertex Alpine GTX sharing some DNA with trail running shoes, but I certainly wouldn’t go out running in them, precisely because they are well-designed for approach requirements, which makes them far too heavy and stiff for running.)

To start with these attributes, there is a very reassuring degree of rigidity across the length of these shoes, which makes them perfect for tackling scrambling routes and edging around rocks during peak ascents or while engaged in technical approach adventures. 

The midsole is supportive and robust, and it provides the right amount of cushioning to keep long approach hikes comfortable without being spongy and energy sapping, or negating the stiffness in the shank.

The heel bumper and toecap are also good, even though the latter is perhaps a little on the small size. You can still definitely kick and stomp snow steps without damaging your pinkies.

The outsole is very grippy on a range of rock types and other surfaces, and across various conditions, including in the wet. The lugs aren’t overly aggressive, and because they’re not intended for use on soft muddy surfaces, they don’t need to be. Instead the chevrons are shaped and positioned to provide grip and traction on rocks and rubble on the way up, and confidence and control during descents. I did find that the sole pattern collected some mud when I got lower down, but again, that’s because the focus is firmly on providing performance up above the treeline, where conditions are less gloopy.

Up on top, the Gore-Tex membrane incorporated in the chassis does its job exactly as you would expect it to, keeping rain, snow and sleet on the outside so you can tackle technical terrain with dry socks and warm feet. It is breathable, so far as any waterproof footwear is, but the integrated sock does mean these shoes run quite warm, and can get pretty sweaty in hot weather. I really like the lace pocket on top of the sock, which keeps things nice and clean, with no loose ends flapping around, and reduces the likelihood you’ll need to pause to retie laces.

The integrated knit sock itself is a love-it-or-hate-it feature. On the one hand (sorry, foot) it is fantastic for preventing the ingress of grit, scree, pebbles, ice and everything else that will irritate you terribly if it gets into the shoe. And it helps with thermal protection, as well as improving the waterproof performance of the Vertex Alpine GTX. Plus it provides a tangible degree of support and confidence, enhancing the hold and reducing foot movement within the shoe.

However, precisely because it is so good at gripping your foot once it’s in the shoe, this sock makes it annoyingly awkward, time-consuming and energy-sapping to get the Vertex Alpine GTX on in the first place. Without the pull hoop at the back it would be virtually impossible, and I do wonder whether the pressure that needs to be exerted on this feature could potentially lead to damage or failure over time (although, I should add that the build quality seems really solid, and there’s no indication of wear and tear at the moment). I suspect that the knit will become slightly more forgiving over time too, getting a little bit looser with repeat usage.

As mentioned, the sock also makes these shoes quite warm to wear – which is great in alpine environments for most of the year, but can lead to sweatiness in summer and at lower altitudes.

I did find the whole fit a bit tight – not just in terms of the sock inner, which of course is designed to be close-fitting, but also in the chassis itself, especially across the top of the foot and in the toe box. If you have wide feet, and especially if you suffer with bunions, then you will struggle with these shoes.

• Rock climbing for beginners: the big questions answered

The Arc’teryx Alpine Academy returns to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc this July for the 13th edition of the mountaineering festival aimed at educating people in the outdoors. With more than 80 clinics to choose from over four days, the Alpine Academy is an opportunity for you to begin or develop your alpine skills, from trail running to climbing, and learn from some of the world’s best athletes.

This year's event, which Arc'teryx describes as "a space for alpine enthusiasts of all levels to advance their mountain skills," takes place from Thursday, July 4 through Sunday, July 7. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, on Wednesday, March 27 at 5 p.m. CET.

Chamonix is a French resort area at the base of Mont Blanc near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy. It is renowned for its skiing, trail running and mountaineering opportunities. • Arc’teryx launches new adventure shoes that “sit at the intersection of climbing and running

Arc'teryx has opened the doors to a new store in London's Covent Garden, complete with an on-site service center where experts will wash and repair your Arc'teryx gear free of charge. The new store is the largest in Europe, and is a relocation from the previous location at 49 Long Acre. 

Arc'teryx has two other stores in London, in Piccadilly and Battersea Power Station, but occupying 733 square metres, the new Covent Garden branch is by far the biggest, with a rainbow of technical gear downstairs, including a huge selection of jackets.

Head upstairs (past an impressive display of real plants) and you'll find backpacks, accessories and the new line of Arc'teryx shoes. There's also a concession dedicated to the Veilance range of technical gear made for city living.

Take a left and you'll arrive at the ReBIRD service center, where you can bring your gear to be refreshed and repaired so it lasts as long as possible. The center only handles Arc'teryx gear, but you don't need to have a receipt from when you bought it. The in-store experts can even determine whether your jacket is genuine or not if you bought it from a third-party retailer (fakes are surprisingly common).

Gore-Tex needs washing regularly to keep its waterproof properties, and down jackets benefit from regular cleaning to keep them fluffy and insulating, but not everyone has the facilities to do it themselves at home and the washers at launderettes often have a buildup of detergent and fabric conditioner that you don't want on your gear. The ReBIRD workshop has an industrial-sized washer and dryer specifically for washing technical gear. Just bring your items in, and the team will take care of the rest.

A labelled and color-coded jacket on a mannequin shows all the repairs that can be carried out, from replacing zippers through to replacing entire panels. It's impressive (and the multicolored demo jacket looks so cool, several people have apparently asked if they can buy it).

Some repairs take longer than others, but the team can fix minor holes and tears in a matter of minutes with small patches that will form a perfect seal to restore the fabric's integrity.

At the launch event, we saw how owners are invited to choose a color for their patch (one that blends in with the fabric, or a contrasting shade to highlight the repair), then choose how it's positioned. When they're happy, a team member will use a heavy heated press to seal it in place, then finish it with a cool press. The mend is seamless, and the jacket is ready to wear again right away.

Zippers and cords can be repaired at the service center too, and your gear can be sent off for more complex fixes like replacement of zippers and panels. There's a small charge for off-site repairs, but the team will be able to advise on prices.

Since 2015, Arc’teryx has partnered with Salomon developing its footwear but has decided to go it alone for a revolutionary new range of shoes – an approach shoe, a running shoe and a recovery shoe – for spring 2024 that have been designed entirely in-house.

The three shoes in the range boasts a striking new design ethos which brand says, “sits at the intersection of climbing and running”.

Arc’teryx hasn’t cut ties with Salomon completely; they are still sister sister brands under Amer Spoerts. But more Arc’teryx-only shoes are in the pipeline.

“We were kind of drafting off of what Salomon had done in the past and iterating on it,” Arc’teryx chief creative officer Katie Becker tell Footwear News. “This new focus is having a team of experts that actually is building footwear. We’re approaching it differently… It feels like there’s room for both of us. We use the mountains very differently.”

So Arc’teryx has expanded its footwear team from four to 12 people, led by industry veteran Ovidio Garcia, who joined the company in 2021 after over 15 years at Nike.

And Garcia has a vision for where he wants to take Arc’teryx shoes:

“We started approaching footwear for somebody using the entire mountain. They don’t want to change shoes. We have shoes you can do everything in. It is a new space and we’re super excited about that.

“We created the reset of our line directly from the insights of our athletes. The way they move when they travel through mountain terrain is quite different from most people. When you talk to an athlete that plays in the mountain space, they hybridize a lot of the activities.”

So what about the actual shoes?

The new Arc’teryx spring range features three new shoes including the Vertex Alpine GTX, which Arc’teryx described as a “complete rethinking of the approach shoe.”

It combines the lightweight agility of trail running shoes with the durability and grip required for approaches on steep, technical terrain. It features sticky Vibram XS Flash 2 outsoles, tough Cordura uppers with recycled PET and TPU shanks and toe caps for protection. 

The Arc’teryx Vertex Alpine will retail for $220 with a Gore-Tex version at $250, respectively.

The  Arc’teryx Sylan GTX is a race-oriented mountain running shoe designed with speed in mind. It features a rocker geometry, which the brand says drives propulsion on steeps and flats. An aggressive 6 mm lug pattern on the Vibram Megagrip outsoles “gives it bite.” 

The Arc’teryx Sylan will retail for $200 with a GTX iteration at $230.

The Arc’teryx Kragg may look like a fancy version of Vans slip-on, but Arc’teryx described them as pull-on approach shoes for before, during and after the climb”. They’re made with stretchy Spacermesh uppers for comfort and durability, along with collapsible heels which means they can be worn as slippers. 

They also feature sock liners made with a 50% bio-based poured PU compound with an open-cell foam top layer containing 25% bio-based content, removable Insite Contoura foam insoles cushions and durable Vibram Megagrip outsoles.

The Arc’teryx Kragg will retail for $160.

All of the shoes will go on sale in March, and Arc’teryx claim they have more new shoes to launch in each season on 2024 and into 2025.

Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody: first impressions

Canadian climbing and outdoor brand Arc’teryx are known for their top-quality adventure apparel… and the high-end price tag that you invariably see attached to anything carrying their distinctive logo. There is something undeniably appealing about Arc’teryx clothing, though – perhaps the tidy cut, the sensational color options, or the subtle design flourishes – that makes everything that features the fossilized Archaeopteryx seem absolutely ace.

However, gear can be all kinds of handsome only to fail completely when it meets truly adverse conditions. Can the Gamma Lightweight Hoody live up to the lofty expectations I have of it (partly based on its sky high price), or will it prove to be a third-rate failure? (And why exactly do you need a windbreaker jacket for hiking?) I’ve been putting a sample through its paces to find out. 

Note: I’ve been testing the original version of this jacket, which is still very much available, but there is an updated iteration too. Made from a different material – Wee Burly Double Weave (56% nylon, 34% polyester, 10% elastane) – the revised Gamma is considerably heaver (545g / 1lb 3.2 oz) and even more expensive (£250 /$300), but it is available in an eclectic range of tasteful colors including Blue Tetra, Edziza (an orangey yellow) and Heritage (dark red)… although not for women, so far as I can tell.

Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody: materials and design

Exceptionally light, the original Gamma Hoody is made with Fortius 1.0, a windproof softshell material made from hardwearing nylon (86%) and dynamic elastane (14%), with the generous proportion of the latter providing a high degree of stretch. A big plus point is that 43% of the material content used is recycled.

While the jacket is not waterproof, and doesn’t claim to be, it has been treated with a durable water repellent, FC0-DWR, and does repel light rain and moisture, which beads up on the surface and rolls right off without soaking in. This won’t keep heavier downpours from giving you a drenching, however, so you will need to don a proper waterproof shell jacket when the weather gets really wet.

The Gamma has an adjustable hem and features a full-length zip that extends to protect your neck and lower face, and ends with a chin-protecting zip garage. The ‘stormhood’ has a good peak, completing the decent all-round head cover. This jacket has two hand pockets, both of which zip shut so you can securely stash some cash, a credit card or a car key in them. 

Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody: on the trails and at the crag

I’ve been testing the Gamma Lightweight Hoody from Arc’teryx on trails, hillsides and crags for the last year, wearing the top in all kinds of conditions and temperatures, while enjoying a wide variety of outdoor shenanigans around the UK.

With four-way movement in the material (and plenty of it), the dynamic Gamma is a great, lightweight and breezeproof top for hiking, scrambling and climbing in. With unrestricted levels of movement, you can easily stretch for holds while wearing this top. The hood is helmet friendly too. 

It’s a good wind-defying outerlayer during the warmer months, whether you’re out walking trails or belaying a mate at the crag, but once temperatures start to drop, this wafer-thin top doesn’t supply much thermal protection, so you will need to think about additional layers. One omission from an otherwise excellent design becomes apparent when you go to pull on a layer over the top of the Gamma: it lacks thumb hoops.

The sleeves are skinny fit, though, and the sharp-cut cuffs are elasticated so there’s no excess material flapping around, which I like. The bottom hem can also be drawn in to keep breezes out, and a couple of tiny toggles then maintain the tightness. The hood has a single adjustment point (located on the back of your head), which is very easy to use with one hand, and I found the peak on the front of the lid effective at stopping the elements from smashing into my face when conditions were feisty.

There are only two pockets on this top, but because its primary role is as a lightweight, wind-blocking softshell, I don’t see this as a problem. There’s no point having a featherlight garment if you’re going to subsequently weigh it down by storing loads of things stuffed in the pockets.

Given that it is so ideal for climbing, I did think the pockets could perhaps have been positioned higher and angled in a more harness-friendly way.

On a sunny afternoon in lively Chamonix village, the folks at the ReBIRD stall are busily working behind their sewing machines, mending Gore-Tex gear that’s been well-loved in the mountains. A man named Mathieu, from Lyons, presents a waterproof jacket that’s seen better days – the zipper is broken and there’s a slash across the chest that he says is from the edges of his skis, or maybe his ice axe, he can’t remember. He hands the jacket over to a gear pro who will revive it so it can go back in his closet for more adventures, then disappears into the throng to watch the bouldering comp.

Refreshing gear that might otherwise end up in the landfill is at the heart of what ReBIRD, Arc’teryx’s circularity program, has been doing since 2021. Like several leading outdoor brands seeking to offset the impact of their manufacturing on the environment, Arc’teryx launched the program to help extend the life of its gear. Hikers and mountaineers tend to put their gear under a lot more duress than street clothing, and as a result, research shows that nature sport participants have the highest carbon emission levels.

To help curb the collateral damage of manufacturing, ReBIRD takes back salvageable used gear online, cleans and mends it and sells it on at a discounted price. Consumers can easily find all the information they need to look after their gear on their ReCARE hub – from step-by-step re-waterproofing guides, to understanding how to wash down products. They also moonlight at the Arc’teryx Academy, a series of mountaineering events such as the one at Chamonix, where they’ll offer on-site services for free.

Their work is one part of a larger puzzle that really involves you, the consumer, helping to solve the problem of enjoying the outdoors without accidentally destroying it. Here’s Showers’ advice on what we can do to ensure our best gear, from rain pants to down jackets, stays out of the landfill, and it all begins at the point of purchase.

1. Consider used gear

Buying a new fleece or ski jacket is always cause for excitement, but just because you need a piece of gear doesn’t mean you actually have to get it fresh off the production line, says Showers.

“When considering any new purchase, the first question to ask would be – do I need to buy new? Can I fix up an existing item? Can I buy second-hand? Good gear, well-cared for, can last much longer than a single user, so it’s always worth seeking out used gear.”

2. Quality over quantity

If you do need to buy new gear, then Showers advises you invest in well-made and durable gear rather than skipping on quality for a more budget-friendly option, which turns out to be a false economy.

“It’s better to buy once, and buy well, than to seek out short-term options which need replacing every season.”

Spending more money up front might seem daunting, but in the long run, so long as you choose your gear well, you’ll actually save money, which is good news for your wallet and the planet.

3. Love your gear

Obviously you love your best gear, but you want to love it with your actions and not just your heart. Once you’ve bought that new jacket, make a commitment to taking really great care of it.

“We know that the bulk of the climate impact in the life of a jacket comes during manufacturing and end-of-life periods, so the longer we can keep gear in play, the better.”

You might assume that this involves arduous tasks such as darning your hiking socks and replacing zippers yourself, and sometimes that's the case, but oftentimes, it’s much simpler than that – keeping your gear clean, for example.

“Sweat and oils from your skin can degrade the fabric and cause it to delaminate, so don’t be afraid to wash it. Lots of people are scared of washing technical gear, but it’s a simple process.”

Showers recommends using technical wash like Nikwax, or unscented detergent to clean your gear after every few uses. The same goes for cleaning your hiking boots after each walk, and knowing when and how to wash a sleeping bag and other camping gear.

“Keeping up this simple routine will have a huge impact on the lifespan of your clothes,” promises Showers.

4. Learn to re-proof

Of all the perfectly good gear that ends up in the landfill, waterproof clothing is probably top of the list. Showers explains that waterproof jackets and rain pants are coated with a waterproofing product called DWR, which causes water to bead off rather than pooling on the surface. Over time, DWR starts to wear out, and the water stops beading off, which misleads a lot of consumers into thinking it's time to replace their clothes, but Shower has great news for those of us who live in rainy climates.

“Lots of people assume this means that the products are no longer waterproof, but the membrane is still totally intact! To restore that satisfying beading effect, just wash your jacket, reapply DWR and throw it in the dryer or use a hairdryer to activate. Your jacket will be back to its beady, crunchy best – just like new.”

5. Recycle

Though the goal is to keep your gear going for years, or even decades, at some point it may have completed its journey and have one too many rips from good adventures. To be sure, Showers recommends taking it into the store and having the professionals determine whether you’re looking at small issues or functional end-of-life problems.

If it has indeed reached the end of its life, you can recycle some outdoor gear, though it’s sadly not as easy as dropping your plastic milk bottles and aluminum cans off at the recycling center.

Arc’teryx will take select items and reward you with an in-store credit, then refurbish your gear and sell it on at a reduced price. Garmin's Product Recycling Program will take back old GPS watches. Nike has a takeback program for well-worn running shoes. Searching for what you want to recycle and the name of your town will most likely reveal local gear stores that can help. With a few keystrokes and a little effort, you can keep your gear out of the landfill, and help the planet you love exploring.

Arc'teryx Essent High Rise Legging: first impressions

Sometimes leggings are just leggings, and other times they’re a surprisingly versatile piece of kit. In the Essent High Rise, we think we’ve found a pair of leggings built for lots of mountain adventures. We’ve been trail running, hiking and rock climbing in these stretchy-but-tough leggings and we’ve enjoyed serious freedom of movement, protection and breathable comfort on hot days.

With a high rise design, these leggings are comfortable, and for the most part, they stay put even when you’re running, without being too tight. Two deep thigh pockets work with your climbing harness and are big enough to stash your phone when you’re hiking and running. Theyr’e reasonably breathable for hot weather hikes and runs, but we’ve tested them out in plenty of rain storms and are happy to see that they dry quickly. The abrasion resistant material holds up well against the rock, so even though these are on the pricey end for running leggings, we think they’re good quality and therefore good value.

Arc'teryx Essent High Rise Legging: in the field

Most of my Arc’teryx gear is a little more mountaineering-focused, such as the impenetrable Beta Waterproof Jacket, so I was curious about how their reputation for mountain-ready, high performance gear would translate into a pair of leggings, which are arguably more of an everyday item. 

Though I tend to prefer regular hiking pants on the trail, as a yoga teacher and runner, I do wear leggings a lot. Since receiving the Essents, I’ve worn them for a lot of sweaty runs, one warm weather stretch of the West Highland Way, several bouldering sessions and a fair bit of yoga. In short, I’ve probably stretched them to their limits.

Here’s how they performed:  

Sizing and fit 

I tested a UK size 8, which is my regular size, and I’d say these fit true to size. I tested the 28” length and there’s a tiny amount of extra fabric at the bottom, and a tiny amount of wrinkling around my bum, but not so much that I’d say these run especially large. I might just be on the smaller side of my size and prefer a looser fit. I do occasionally have to give them a tug on a run, but I wouldn’t want them any tighter as that wouldn’t be comfortable and the seams already leave marks on my legs which makes me think they’re tight enough. 

They pretty much fit like any spray-on pair of leggings and you might want to try on a couple of sizes depending on whether you like them super figure hugging, or with a little room to breathe.

Comfort and stretch

I find some leggings are so tight around my middle that I get indigestion if I eat while wearing them, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s too tight. I do know that a lot of people feel differently, however with that in mind, I find these comfortable enough to wear all day, even when that involves riding my bike, climbing, running and working on my laptop. I like the high waist that doesn’t cut in anywhere. The fabric is silky against my skin with no chafing anywhere.

As for stretch, well these leggings are nearly a third elastane, so I have absolutely no problems scrambling over boulders on the West Highland Way, working on my heel hook at the bouldering gym or doing the splits on my yoga mat. No problems there.

Breathability and temperature control 

We’re not having the hottest summer on record here, but I have been wearing these in mostly warm and humid conditions and I’ve been happy with their breathability, even when I’m on a long trail and I've never felt clammy or overheated. They're not super thin, so I think I'll be happily running all winter in them too.

Storage

For functional leggings for running, I absolutely need pockets to carry my phone, especially in warm weather when I’m not wearing a running jacket, so I was pleased that this pair has two deep thigh pockets. I can run with my phone in either pocket and not have my leggings being tugged down.

Durability 

I haven’t been testing these for too long, so I can’t say what condition they’ll be in after heavy use for a year, and I am curious because the more elastane content leggings have, the more they tend to lose their stretch as time goes on. That said, because I’ve been climbing and scrambling in these several times, I can definitely say that the abrasion-resistant material is pretty robust. In fact, they still look as good as new.

Arc'teryx Beta Lightweight Jacket: first impressions

When it comes to weather extremes, you usually have to choose between light weight jacket and high performance, but in the Beta Lightweight, Arc’teryx have achieved a waterproof jacket that delivers both. Using the full protection of Gore-Tex in a light, breathable shell jacket, you can be as comfortable wearing this at high altitude on a glacier trek as you can on a soggy, lowland hike. Technically speaking, this is a hardshell jacket, offering full wind and water protection in what the brand calls an environmental shelter, but the fabric is as light, breathable and pliable as your favorite softshell, making this jacket extremely versatile.

This jacket comes a little lower at the back, giving you great coverage when you want to sit down in the wet grass for a break, and the right size leaves plenty of room for layering. In addition to the breathable 40D Gore-Tex fabric, the Beta Lightweight sports pit zips for when you start to get steamy in rainforest conditions, though we’ve yet to need them this summer. Two zipped hand pockets plus one small inner pocket provide about as much storage as you’d want or expect from a jacket like this, while an adjustable hem, cuffs and hood help you seal out a cold wind on a blustery day. The peaked hood offers great coverage and cinches tight when the wind kicks up. 

As we all know, there are environmental issues when it comes to Gore-Tex, but Arc’teryx is a leader in finding solutions, such as their ReBird program which helps to repair and recycle their garments. The price of this jacket is certainly eye watering, and there’s no doubt that it will make many think twice, but we’re confident in the performance of this high quality jacket and think you’ll be pleased with it in all seasons.

Arc'teryx Beta Lightweight Jacket: in the field

I already own a couple of really lightweight waterproof jackets that are great for hiking, so I certainly wasn’t actively seeking a new one, nor did I think one could come along that would outperform the others. That said, I’ve been wearing the Beta Lightweight jacket now on rainy Scottish Munros, high up on an alpine glacier in the Alps and even for bike rides around the city and it’s been hard to take it off.

Here’s how it performed:  

Sizing and fit 

I’m a small and tested a small and I’d say that it fits true to size. It does have a naturally slightly baggy fit and comes down lower at the back to cover my bum. I wouldn’t recommend sizing down even if you like a more streamlined look, however, as I’m finding that I have plenty of room to layer this over a fleece if I need to. 

Weather protection and breathability

When it comes to weather protection, I’ve so far tested this out against a harsh cold wind high up in the Alps, in rainforest-like conditions on lower summer trails in Chamonix and on a very wet and windy Munro in Scotland. It absolutely seals out the wind and rain, especially when you fasten the cuffs and cinch the hood properly. The peaked hood does a good job of protecting my face from a driving rain too.

It’s not an insulated jacket, but worn over a very light fleece pullover and a merino wool T-shirt, I was more than warm enough on a cold glacier. That said, I’ve found that it’s surprisingly breathable too, even when I’ve been hiking up a near-vertical slope in humid conditions. In fact, I’ve yet to need the pit zips. Full marks for both weather protection and breathability.

Comfort and flex

There aren’t any annoying scratchy details anywhere on this jacket and it has enough give that I can move around, take my backpack on and off, reach for my ice axe and raise my arms over my head while wearing it.

Weight and packability

I only have one jacket that is lighter than this one, and the difference between the two is just 30 grams. For the weight, you won’t find a higher performing jacket than this and it packs down well to about the size of a water bottle, even with the stiffer peaked hood.

Features and versatility 

The main features are three zipped pockets, including two hand warming pockets which are big enough for my phone and one inner pocket which is really only big enough for keys or credit cards but still handy.

In addition, this jacket comes equipped with a RECCO reflector, in case you get into difficulties in the backcountry.

As for versatility, this can definitely be worn for everything from wet summer hiking to high alpine snow sports if you just wanted lightweight protection, though I’d stop short at wearing it for trail running as it’s a little too loose. I’ve also been pulling it on as my go-to jacket for riding my bike around the city, and I’d trust it for traveling too.

Arc'teryx Gamma Pant: first impressions

Arc’teryx has set the bar pretty high when it comes to outerwear performance so when a new item comes along we expect it to be a cut above the rest and once again, we weren’t disappointed with these hiking pants. As softshell trousers, the Gamma pants are light, stretchy and breathable enough to sweat away in on a hot summer’s hike, and tough enough to stand up against any scrambling routes. With water and wind resistance, they have enough weather protection for shoulder season hikes and with enough room to haul them on over thermal underwear, you can pair them with rain pants and wear them in winter too.

A comfortable, adjustable waistband is designed to ride under your harness without chafing if you wear these mountaineering or climbing, and though the new model doesn’t have adjustable cuffs, they’re tapered to avoid catching on your boots as you walk. For stashing your phone and gloves, you’ve got two zipped hip pockets plus a thigh pocket, though for those who like to carry a map or giant phone, the thigh pocket may be too small. For breathable, quick drying comfort with tons of stretch, it's hard to beat these pants, and though they’re more costly than some, we think they’re well-priced compared to similar pants.

Arc'teryx Gamma Pant: in the field 

I first wore these pants during the Arc’teryx Alpine Academy in Chamonix, where the weather was surprisingly tropical. Since returning to Scotland, I’ve put them through their paces against cooler temperatures, wind and rain. In a lot of ways, they remind me of my Black Diamond Alpine Softshell Pants, but for one difference: they’re better.

Here’s how they performed:  

Sizing and fit 

I always wear a US 4 and that’s what I tested and I’d say these were a good fit. They’re designed to be fitted, and mine definitely have a little more room than some other people who were also testing them out at the Alpine Academy. I would say that those people who wore them with a snugger fit definitely looked nicer than I do in mine, but I like the little bit of extra room. It’s more comfortable to sit down in, and it means I can pull these on over thermal leggings in colder weather.

Comfort and flex

The best way I can describe the comfort of these pants is that they have a ‘barely there’ feel. The fabric is quite soft, they’re light and don’t cut in anywhere, so I can wear them all day long without thinking about them. Ideal, really. The waistband is designed to work well with a harness, which is ideal for mountaineering and climbing.

They’re also super stretchy, and I’ve been wearing them for bouldering lately and having no problems whatsoever moving in them.

Breathability and weather protection

These pants don’t have any thigh vents, but even in nearly tropical conditions I haven’t needed them because the fabric is so breathable. They’re great for warmer weather where you want a little leg protection. 

They are water resistant, which proved absolutely no match for a rainy Scottish hike recently where I wore them with rain pants on top, but for a light rain they hold out and dry quickly.

Features and durability 

I like how easy the waistband is to adjust – just pull a tab to tighten. The pockets are great, including two zipped hip pockets and a thigh pocket that’s big enough for my phone, though not quite big enough for a map. The ankle cuffs aren’t adjustable, though they have two small holes and I’ve absolutely no idea what they are for.

So far, I’ve worn them for scrambling and bouldering and they look as good as new. Given Arc’teryx’s commitment to quality, I expect these to last for a lot of adventures to come.

A cold wind whips at us as we step out onto the viewing platform at Pointe Helbronner on the Mont Blanc Massif. Just moments ago, we were snug in the warmth of the gondola and I’m dressed for the summer day that it is, in a light fleece over a wool T–shirt. Now, we’re fumbling to pull on waterproof jackets, hats and gloves. 

There are errors. A couple from Lithuania has forgotten to bring gloves, so we scramble to find extra pairs and fortunately, two of us read the instructions to bring both a light and a warm pair. An Israeli woman left her sunglasses at the hotel and with the glare up here, to go out on the glacier without them would be dangerous. One of our guides, Alain from France, produces an extra set from his backpack.

Once the warm clothing is donned, we begin grappling with harnesses and crampons, a first for many of us. Alain tells us that the typical way to attach an ice axe to a backpack can be dangerous for other climbers in tight spaces (like gondola cabins where they can get poked in the eye) and difficult to reach if you fall into a crevasse and instructs us to instead carry it in hand while hiking, or slide it in between your body and your pack if you’re carrying trekking poles.

I’ve been rock climbing for years so the harness is no problem, but my rented crampons, hastily grabbed at 7 a.m., turn out to be too big and once we start walking, it’s clear my hiking boots are going to slide right out of them. It takes another guide, Walter, to get down on his knees and pull them as tight as they’ll go before we can continue.

Once they’re secured, we can finally begin our glacier trek in earnest. We’re here for the 12th Arc’teryx Alpine Academy in Chamonix, which offers 80 mountaineering clinics over four days ranging from beginner-level mountain trail running and bouldering all the way up to portaledging and ice climbing. I was signed up for Level 1 Mountaineering yesterday, where I’d hoped to get detailed training on things like using crampons and crevasse safety, but for the first time in 12 years, rain and lightning forced the cancellation of most of the day’s clinics. Instead, we had a delightful but low tech hike to Montenvers followed by a mountain train ride down and as a result, I’m here preparing to hike across the Glacier du Geant to the Col d’Entreves without any real mountaineering experience.

Luckily, today’s glacier trek is billed as beginner-friendly, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy and there’s still a steep learning curve for our group of eight (two got turned away because they showed up in trail running shoes and no crampons). We’re roped together in groups of five, each with a guide at the front, and we have to learn quickly how to walk in deep snow, wearing crampons and leaving the perfect amount of slack between each member of the party. Too much is dangerous if anyone falls into a crevasse, prompting a Tom and Jerry-esque sling shot of the person behind, while not enough means the person in front ends up pulling the climbers behind).

Everyone in the group is super fit and has lots of mountain experience, but still, the experience proves challenging. We’ve been boosted up 8,000 feet from Chamonix in under an hour, thanks to the Sky Way gondola, and walking on soft snow is always arduous. We’ve been instructed to walk uphill with our feet wider than usual and toes turned out like Charlie Chaplin, in part to avoid catching our crampon teeth in our pant legs, but the trail is narrow and this proves impossible.

The fact that we’re surrounded by breathtaking peaks – Mont Blanc du Tacul, Mont Maudit, Mont Blanc, Aiguille d'Entreves and the Tour Ronde, just to name drop a few – doesn’t help. Several times, I’m so busy gaping at the snow-shrouded scenery, glittering in the intense sunlight, that I trip and stumble a few steps.

Thanks to our experienced guides, however, we soon get into a decent rhythm and it’s because of the guides’ expertise and guidance that we’re able to both learn some mountaineering skills and really enjoy ourselves on an adventure that could otherwise be stressful for novices. 

The whole journey takes not much than three hours, and in that time we learn how to spot potential crevasses and get a quick guide to what to do if any member of our team falls into one (fortunately, we don’t have to put this knowledge to the test). We also learn a little about how crevasses form, why the glacier looks brown in some areas (dust from the Sahara) and pink in others (an algae that lives up here).

It’s this educational component that has me enthusiastically urging our shuttle driver back to Geneva the following day to take part in the Academy next year. He’s lived in Chamonix for two years and has been unable to afford any guided excursions.

Mountaineering is, in every aspect, an exclusive activity. It requires skill, gear and knowledge that can only be gained with money, whether it be your own or someone else’s. During our hike, Alain regales us with tales of taking clients up Mont Blanc. Most of them are surgeons and lawyers who think nothing of dropping thousands for the privilege of his expertise (or of forcing him to continue after his calf was pierced by a crampon tooth, but that’s a story for another day). I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into with this event, but by day two I’m wholly convinced that it makes mountaineering at least a little more accessible to a lot more people.

Unless you’re already an experienced mountaineer, you need a guide to get you up into high alpine zones (and in fact, in certain locations you’re only allowed up there with a guide, for safety reasons). If you’re anything like me, you didn’t grow up with friends or family who knew the mountains, and without expert guidance, the mountains might be calling, but you aren’t going. 

Going up to Col d’Entreves with a guide normally costs €400, and that doesn’t include your gear rentals (€15) or your Sky Way ticket (another €48). Clinics at the Academy, on the other hand, which are led by the same team of expert guides, start at €65 and include your shuttle to Courmayeur and your Sky Way ticket.

 Just looking at that list, you can see how much money you’d potentially save, and be able to test out gear before you commit to it – I loved my Arc’teryx Beta Jacket and Gamma Hiking Pants but might not have forked out for them without trying them first. 

Obviously, you still have the expense of getting to Chamonix (easiest route is to fly to Geneva then take a mountain shuttle starting at €20) and hotel rooms (starting at around €180 per night in July), but all in you you could reasonably attend three days of clinics for under a grand, especially if you’re sharing a room, and come away with a lot of new skills and confidence.

There are also free events every day, such as trail runs, bouldering comps, yoga classes, concerts and film screenings, meaning if you can only afford one or two clinics, you can still gain knowledge, hang out and soak up the festival vibe.

Furthermore, if you have old gear that’s in need of some TLC, bring it along. In the Alpine Village are hardworking folks sitting behind sewing machines ready to fix that tear or replace the zipper on your favorite hardshell jacket or pair of hiking pants, for free, as part of Arc’teryx’s ReBird program. The cost of admission could save you hundreds on having to buy new gear.

Finally, the Arc’teryx Alpine Academy is great fun. There’s live music, VR headsets so you can experience backcountry skiing, big wall climbing or heliskiing without leaving the village, a bouldering wall, food vendors and of course, plenty of cold beer on tap. The Arc'teryx Rho Hybrid Half Zip base layer (available to buy direct from Arc'teryx) could be a sample illustration in the Outdoor 101 text book for the ideal base layer. Outdoor 101 teaches that the key to staying dry and comfortable in the great outdoors, especially in cold weather, is good layering – and that starts with a reliable base layer. Basically, you’re looking for great next-to-skin comfort, a decent level of insulation and good moisture-wicking performance. A fairly close fit is also important if you really want to maximize the benefits of your base layer. Lastly, good all-round coverage will help to keep your neck, wrists and lower back warm, even during dynamic activity – whether you’re skiing, hiking or climbing.

Sounds simple, but finding a base layer that nails all those requirements isn’t always so easy. Traditionally, your choices have been to go with either a synthetic fabric – typically polyester or polypropylene – or a natural fiber, usually wool. Wool is known for its ability to move moisture and regulate temperature, as well as its natural anti-bacterial properties that help to ward off body odor. Unfortunately, some find it itchy. Softer and finer wools like Merino help in this regard, but they need lots of care and even then, are prone to abrasion. Synthetics, on the other hand, wick even faster than wool, feel soft and smooth against the skin, yet offer good durability too. Their major downside is their tendency to smell, especially after prolonged use.

With the Rho Hybrid, Arc’teryx have attempted to give you the best of both worlds by using a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. The main fabric is their Phasic AR II, a midweight polyester that has been treated with silver ions to neutralize body odor. But there are also zoned panels under the arms made from a blend of natural Merino wool and hard-wearing nylon. Together, you should get great wicking performance, comfort and warmth, without any unpleasant bodily odor.

This is an intelligently designed base layer that also happens to have one of the best fits of any long-sleeved technical tee I’ve tested. It has plenty of length in the arms and torso (even for a six foot plus hiker), plus a standup collar that does a great job of preventing chills from creeping down your neck. The cut is trim enough to feel cosy without being skin-tight, unlike a lot of other compression-style winter layers out there. The deep neck zip is a great way to dump a little extra heat if you’re working hard uphill too. 

The fabric is soft and comfortable, with very thin, flatlock seams to avoid irritation. The merrow stitching also resists snags a lot better than conventional flatlock stitching, which is a plus for durability. Another bonus is that the fabric is sleek without being shiny, so it slides easily under a mid layer fleece or puffy.

In terms of performance, the hybrid design does its job really well. I’ve worn this layer for multiple days straight, even sleeping in it whilst wild camping in the mountains of North Wales, and it’s stayed surprisingly fresh. It wicks superbly, and the wool underarm panels generally stop things from getting too damp or sticky.

It’s a mid-range layer in terms of overall warmth, which offers plenty of versatility for variable temperatures and conditions. I tend to run hot, rarely wearing heavyweight base layers even in winter, so this is great for use through fall, winter and spring – though it’s a little too warm for summer wear (but then, most people would switch to a lighter, short-sleeved technical tee in those months anyway).

The only minor niggle I have is that the sleeves lack thumb loops. This is a matter of personal preference, but for winter use I generally like to ensure my sleeves are pulled in under gloves and jacket cuffs. On the other hand, the sleeves of the Rho are fairly long and not at all baggy, so it’s not a major issue.

As with all Arc’teryx kit, the price is pretty high. But a base layer is such an important element of your outdoor clothing system that I’d suggest it’s money well spent – in fact, it’s probably worth saving £50 on the price of your waterproof jacket or mid layer and putting it towards a good base layer, like this one. Think about it this way: much of the time, that expensive down jacket or Gore-Tex shell will be stuffed away in your pack. But when was the last time you headed out without a tee? 

All in all, this has quickly become a favorite bit of kit, and it is the top I now tend to pull on whenever I head out on a hike in the hills. It’s a little too soon to judge durability, but so far it shows no signs of wear, and has been through the laundry a few times without losing its shape or showing any pilling.

Arc’Teryx Academy’s Climb Lake District event is returning to Langdale, Cumbria this spring, after a successful launch in 2021, to support climbers and mountaineers in mastering the necessary skills to enjoy the mountains and crags safely. 

Arc’Teryx is teaming up with experts from the International School of Mountaineering for the three-day event, taking place April 29 - May 1 2022, which aims at giving climbers the education and training required to take their outdoor adventuring to the next level confidently and safely with climbing clinics on trad climbing, scrambling and bouldering as well as  mountain safety and rescue skills. The half-day, small-group clinics cover all abilities, from beginner’s bouldering to learning how to lead climb and there are women’s specific clinics on offer too. 

The weekend doesn’t just stop at climbing, however. Also on the schedule is an overnight wild camping trip where you can learn all about primitive camping in the hills around Langdale, and a wild swimming clinic designed to teach you the benefits of cold water immersion as well as approaching wild swimming safely. You can also carry out some conservation work with The Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s and learn about the importance of Cumbria’s peatlands in the fight against climate change.
