In the market for some tough new hiking boots to help you take on soggy fall trails? Take a look at the latest pair from outdoors brand Danner, featuring grippy Vibram outsoles and waterproof Gore-Tex exteriors to protect your feet from the rain.

The new N54 hiking boots are Danner's answer to damp fall and early winter conditions, designed to keep you dry and comfortable over mile after mile of tricky trails.

Design

The chunky new Vibram outsoles boast Traction Lug and Megagrip technology, designed to dig into tricky terrain and improve stability as you move. The Gore-Tex uppers were also built for trying conditions, and aim to protect your feet from rainfall without holding on to water or weighing you down.

Inside the shoes, large EVA foam midsoles are designed to absorb blows as you walk, while a TPU rock plate provides added stability.

Price

All this protection doesn't come cheap, and the N54 hiking boots will set you back a whopping $250 on the Danner website (they're not yet available in the UK). Danner footwear is usually a little pricier than its competitors, but these boots go beyond the norm.

Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX: first impressions 

This generation of the Salomon X Ultra is designed to be both agile and technical for those who want to move fast and confidently on tricky trails. This lightweight hiking boot is actually a little heavier than the previous edition, but it's also more durable, thanks to upgrades like Matryx uppers in place of leather and synthetic, and improved overlays that will protect your toes from just about anything.

The Contragrip outsole has extremely aggressive lugs that have held up on rocky, slick, and muddy surfaces this summer, and look built for winter conditions too. A chunky foam midsole is designed for a plush ride over longer distances, while the "Advanced Chassis," a molded insert embedded in the outsole, increases lateral stability on uneven terrain without losing flexibility.

The waterproof membrane will keep your feet dry if you meet with heavy rain, wet grass, or multiple river crossings, but in milder conditions, it might also mean sweaty feet. Water protection is aided by the mid-height cuff, which is just high enough to keep water out in a shallow stream and protect your ankle bone.

The cuff and tongue are unusually plush, and that, combined with a lack of eyelets, makes it a little difficult to get a lockdown fit here. They also run a little small and narrow, so if you buy your normal size, you might find that what you gain in lightweight technical creds, you lose in comfort.

It's a shame because with just a few small fixes, these could be a really great pair of capable hiking boots for those who want to roam far and fast.

Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX: in the field 

This is only my second time testing out Salomon hiking boots, having tried the Elixir Mid Gore-Tex a couple of years ago and finding them an odd mix between overly stacked and unnecessarily technical.

I first tested these out during a hiking and camping trip in the Yorkshire Dales earlier this summer, and have since followed up on a couple of trails here in Scotland.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I always test a UK 4 which is usually a US 6, and that typically gives my feet room to swell (or wear thick socks), but I ran into a hitch with these shoes. Salomon's sizing comparison is slightly off, so the UK 4 turned out to be only a US 5.5. And that half size makes quite a difference, as it turns out.

As excited as I was to get them on, when I saw how robust and technical they looked, I was a little worried that they'd be too tight to test. I think they run a little small and a little narrow. With thick socks on, my toes come all the way up to the end with no room to wiggle, but since it was summer, I wore my thinnest socks, and though they were tighter than I'd like, I was able to hike in them without blisters.

The lack of blisters didn't mean that I experienced out-of-the-box comfort, however. In fact, I found I experienced quite a bit of rubbing and toe bashing during my first hike, and actually couldn't wait to get out of them when I got back to the car. I had brought a backup pair of boots for that first trip and ended up wearing them the next day to give my feet a chance to recover, then tried these again on day three, and they were slightly better once broken in.

That said, I think a few things are contributing to the comfort issue for me. There's the odd sizing and narrow fit, which doesn't give my toes room to splay, and the cuff and tongue are just about the plushest I've ever seen. That, combined with just two eyelets, makes it nearly impossible for me to get a good lockdown fit, and the fact is that my toes take a beating when I descend. I think sizing up would help, but I'm not sure how to get around the lacing problem.

Breathability and protection

Another area where comfort leaves something to be desired is that I don't find these to be the most breathable of shoes in the summer months. I've had them out in wet weather, but it's always been mild, and I notice my feet are sweatier than in other lightweight waterproof boots I own, such as my Lowa Renegade EVO GTX or Helly Hansen Switchback Trail HT.

The flip side of that is that they are fully waterproof, which I tested out by standing in a couple of small streams for a minute or two.

The uppers offer loads of good protection too, from the ultra durable Matryx uppers to the robust reinforcements around the toes. The cuff isn't super high, but it's just high enough to keep my ankle bones protected and means I can splash through flooded trails without breaking stride.

Grip and stability

I'm a little sceptical of a boot that doesn't use a Vibram sole, but I have to admit that these Contragrip soles are a really good match for British conditions, which tend to involve muddy slopes, boggy crossings, and slippery rock and slate. The lugs seem able to bite into just about anything, and I did find some confidence in that.

Salomon has gone all in on stability with these boots, using the advanced chassis to provide lateral support in the footbed and what it calls 'mobile wings' in the design of the upper to help hold your foot in place. This is all integrated without losing flex, and the idea is that you can move quickly when the going gets tough.

I tend to notice the lack of stability more in running shoes than I do in hiking boots, but I will say that these boots do respond well to uneven terrain. They'd do an even better job if I could get a more secure fit, however, and I couldn't help wondering if the reason my foot wasn't sliding around was that there wasn't any extra room for it to do so.

First impressions

If you read my review of Vivobarefoot's Tracker Forest ESC hiking boots you'll know that I'm a fairly recent convert to the brand, having never worn barefoot shoes or boots until a year ago.

I'd always thought of barefoot afficionados as being in something of a cult, but, as you'll also know if you read that review, I'm now a full convert. Yep, I drank the Kool Aid.

So I jumped at the chance to test the brand's new fast hiker, the Primus Trail Flow Mid - a taller iteration of its classic Primus Trail Flow hiking shoe and pretty much the opposite of the Tracker Forest ESC. Here's how it performed:

Fit

Since I was lured into the barefoot movement I have slowly converted all my active shoes to barefoot versions, but I lacked a boot for summer hikes, so I was excited by the prospect of the much lighter Primus Trail Flow Mid filling the gap.

I usually take an EU 42 / UK 8.5 in Vivobarefoot styles, and these fitted as I expected, with a thumb’s width of space at the end of the toes to allow room for movement and grip. However, I struggled to get a precise fit around the heel and ankle with the fast lacing system. My go-to hiking socks are some pretty plush Bridgedales and I also have wide feet, but I still had to cinch the boots tight enough to leave a long length of spare cord beyond the toggle fastener.

The laces come with a small clip to allow you to attach any spare cord to the lacing at the front of the foot, and stop it flapping around, but my spare cord was longer than the last lacing point, so instead I tucked it under the front lacing.

I do appreciate these kinds of lacing systems are a weight-saver and make it quicker to slip in and out of your boots, but it does mean I can only really wear these hikers with thick socks, while my Tracker Forest ESCs can be pulled tighter and therefore worn with thinner socks in warmer weather.

All that said, with the right socks, these boots were very comfortable to wear, even if the heel didn't feel as locked in as I'd have ideally have liked.

On the trails

If you're new to barefoot shoes then here's a quick primer: they have zero drop, which means there's no height difference between the heel and the ball of the foot and toe.

So that's the first thing you'll need to get used to. But, along with a generous toe box and lots of flex - both design features to let your feet actually move as intended – barefoot shoes also usually have far less cushioning than standard shoes.

This combination of factors is why it takes a while to get used to wearing them (Vivobarefoot recommend about six weeks of daily wear), and it's also why I wouldn't suggest the Primus Trail Flow Mid as a first pair of barefoot hoofs.

These specific boots have a 1.8mm sole base and no insole, which means you can feel everything on the trail. It doesn't mean your feet aren't protected, far from it, and I'll talk more about that in a bit. But if you're used to fairly stiff boots then suddenly being able to feel each tiny pebble you tread on may just be too much.

Happily, a year into being a barefoot bore, this level of sensation doesn't faze me at all. In fact, I welcome it. I have a lengthy history of knee problems that started in my 20s, and consequently my left knee doesn't flex past about 90 degrees. This can make me a little clumsy and also make descents in stiff boots challenging. I avoided barefoot shoes for years because I was worried that the lack of cushioning would be too tough on my poor knee. But the flex and trail feel provided by barefoot designs - and these ones are particularly thin and supple - actually keep me far steadier on my feet.

I tried them on some pebbly descents in the Lake District and found I was even more confident wearing them than in the Tracker Forest ESCs, probably due to the greater trail feel and flexibility. I actually felt nimble at times, which isn't something I ever hope for due to my various injuries.

Waterproofing and protection

Vivobarefoot describes the Primus Trail Flow Mid as water repellent, but to me that feels like a stretch. Yes, the woven fabric on the lower foot is impressively water resistant, and I walked through multiple shallow streams in them without an issue.

However, as soon as I tackled something deeper, water quickly seeped in through the knit collar, which starts fairly low down and didn't feel water resistant at all. This left me with sodden socks, and no way for the water to drain out. I haven't particularly minded this over the summer and early autumn, but it's why I will be sticking to dry days to wear these boots whenever possible.

They do dry out quickly, but the lack of insulation underfoot and on the upper means they're more suited to three-season hiking. I can see them being very popular with California-based hikers, who are blessed with balmy weather and fast, dry trails year round, and who are probably the only consumers who can buy the cream Peyote version without it being ruined in five minutes flat.

So, this isn't a boot for the worst conditions, but it's still reasonably protective, with a welcome toe bumper right where you need it, and a rubber rand that wraps around the foot. The woven part of the upper has multiple tough layers of fabric that should see off anything pointy or sharp, but the knit collar means there is still some vulnerability around the upper ankle.

Weight

If all this sounds like one gripe too many, then I want to clarify that I actually love these boots. They're not perfect, but for someone who struggles not to trip even walking down stairs sometimes, they left me feeling light on my feet and more capable of technical trails and scrambling than I'm used to.

I also adore how featherweight they are. I passed one to my partner, a seasoned hiker, and he looked incredulous, saying "There's nothing there!" They really are barely there in all the best ways, with my pair (a US women's size 10.5) tipping the scales at just 8.7oz (246g) per boot.

Grip

The Primus Trail Flow Mid also have a decent amount of grip. It's clear they're designed for drier conditions than we are usually greeted with in the UK, but the 3.8mm multi-directional lugs did a good job of keeping me upright, and the braking lugs at the back of the outsole caught me when I did occasionally slip on wet rocks while traversing streams.

Environmental impact

Vivobarefoot is among the many outdoor brands that have read the room, and taken a hard look at their manufacturing processes to make them more sustainable. These boots are advertised as vegan, with the proviso that it's not been possible to establish that the smaller components used in their creation (including glues and dyes) meet vegan best practices. The fact that the brand states this clearly rather than greenwashing is welcome, as is its scheme that allows you to recycle any old worn out pair and get a voucher for 20% off the cost of a new pair.

Due to their limited waterproofing and insulation, the Primus Trail Flow Mid aren't going to become my go-to winter boot. Honestly, I'm gagging to get my Tracker Forest ESCs back on now that the colder months are on their way.

However, for milder days, and for anyone who lives in a drier climate, they're a great option. If you've not worn barefoot shoes or boots before I would strongly recommend trying a pair with thicker soles first. But if you're already in the cult, you won't be disappointed.

Lowa celebrated its 100^th birthday in 2023, marking a century of crafting quality footwear. During that time, the Bavarian brand has forged a solid reputation among hikers and mountaineers for its capable shoes and boots, the creation of which remains its core competency.

The brand’s fleet of hiking footwear is world-renowned. Its best-selling Renegade shoes and boots, launched in 1997, are a familiar sight on the trails. Our very own Julia Clarke wore the Renegade Evo GTX Mid on her adventure to Everest Base Camp and returned with suitably glowing reports.

The Renegade’s younger cousins are the members of the Innovo family, which boast chunky, grippy outsoles, suede uppers and a supportive and protective design. Iterations of the Innovo are available with or without Gore-Tex and as a hiking boot or lower cut shoe.

I was delighted to test out the low-cut Gore-Tex version in the hills of South Wales’ Bannau Brychieniog and on the trails of Southwest England. Unfortunately we can’t all go to Everest every time we test a pair of hiking shoes.

First impressions

The Innovo looks every inch the classic hiking shoe. With its suede upper, speckled laces, protective rand at the toes and breathable gills on the outer side of the foot, it suggests capability from the off. Its hefty appearance hints at comfort and support – of a shoe that’s at home on technical terrain in the mountains. It doesn’t look or feel like a shoe you’d want to run in necessarily, nor does it have the sneaker-like aesthetic of lightweight hikers and its wide curves are at odds with the more streamlined profile of an approach shoe. No, this is no Jack-of-all-trades; this is a hiking shoe.

I slipped my foot in and immediately liked what I felt. It’s nicely cushioned, reassuringly rigid but also flexible enough to maintain its initial comfort when on the move. In terms of fit, it holds the midfoot firmly and the heel sits nicely in its rear throne. Wiggle room for the toes isn’t as pronounced as something like Keen’s NXIS Evo Mid but there’s still more than enough for my feet to feel happy for mile after mile.

Weighing 1lb 1oz (490g) per shoe, it’s at the heavier end of the hiking shoe spectrum and I soon appreciated that the Innovo has more in common with a hiking boot than a trail running shoe. The sole is chunky, grippy and rigid. Not as rigid as a pair of winter hiking boots, but less yielding than many 'fast and light' options.

Quality design

The Innovo’s upper is made from a blend of suede and synthetic fabrics. Suede is a more pliable, softer leather than the high grain nubuck seen in Lowa’s Renegade shoes. This has the advantage of comfort, though it tends to be less durable than nubuck. However, we’re still talking about quality leather here and Lowa’s shoes are renowned for being hard-wearing, so I have few concerns on this front.

Working its magic beneath the suede is the Gore-Tex lining, providing breathability while keeping water out. The inner side of the upper is pure suede, providing protection against abrasion. Meanwhile, the outer side contains an array of four breathable mesh panels that put me in mind of Merrell’s classic Moab series.

The fairly standard lacing system makes use of webbed eyelets to keep both pressure on the foot and weight to a minimum, as well as a pair of punched eyelets towards the toes. Both tongue and collar are nicely padded, while there’s a fabric loop for easy hanging or for attachment to a carabiner.

A chunky, proprietary sole

The Lo version of the Innovo features the same aggressive sole as its bigger boot brother, as well as boasting Lowa’s proprietary rubber compound rather than the Vibram often seen in premium hiking footwear. As mentioned, it’s more rigid than most – an important quality when taking on technical terrain. However, there’s still flex towards the toes, which works with the foot’s natural rolling properties when striding along.

The sole features 67 deep lugs of differing shapes and sizes, with most being medium-sized, flat-topped and not particularly directional. This all points to a design intended to hold soft terrain rather than fly along at speed, while the flat surface of the lugs suggests decent grip on rock. Unlike an approach shoe, there’s no flatter region at the toes for precision when edging or smearing, though the two lugs beneath the heel are larger than the rest, design for effective braking in descent.

The midsole is forged from a dynamic polyurethane that maintains its shape even after being compressed “thousands of times”, according to Lowa. This should enable years of happy exploring, though unlike the Lowa Cevedale Pro GTX Mid, the Innovo doesn’t boast a resoleable design, which is a shame.

Hidden within the shoe is Lowa’s polyurethane Monowrap support frame. This is what I have to thank for the way the shoe embraces and holds the foot, providing the support and stability to take on rough terrain without issue. More on this in a mo…

In the field

I’ve been testing the Innovos through late winter, spring and summer on hiking trips to the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park and on walks in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Southwest England.

The way the Innovo cradles the foot is a real strength. I can think of few other pieces of hiking footwear I’ve worn that have given such an impression of support and protection alongside comfort and flexibility. The cushioning provided by the PU midsole provides a nice amount of propulsion, while the frame really does hold the foot in place beautifully. This all adds to make the Innovo a superb option for long days on the trail or multi-day trekking adventures, especially in drier climes such as those in the Alps.

Its low cut means that boggy terrain is its enemy, as water can get in over the top unless it’s carefully paired with gaiters. This was a bit of an issue when crossing a soggy bwlch (the Welsh word for a depression between two peaks), a common occurrence when hiking in the Bannau Brycheiniog. However, the Innovos kept my feet nicely dry most of the time. Nevertheless, I’d probably opt for the boot version if I was looking to take on some of Britain’s wetter long-distance trails.

I was very impressed with the grippiness of the outsole, which provided ample hold on both wet and dry terrain, rock and the sloppier stuff. The array of deep lugs hold admirably on soft ground, the heel brake provides confidence when descending earthen slopes. Meanwhile, the amount of sticky rubber in contact with rock when negotiating scrambling terrain also provides solid traction. I’d have no qualms wearing these on more technical multi-day hikes, such as the Dolomites’ Alta Vias or Corsica’s GR20. They’re not as tailored to the kind of ground where scrambling becomes climbing as dedicated approach shoes, but for the kind of scrambling terrain found on hikes, they’re great.

Their design and weight mean that the Innovo is much more at home on the trails than the streets, so they’re not the kind of hiking shoes you might wear for the everyday. There’s no doubt that they’re less versatile than many lighter shoes, such as the Aku Omnia V-light GTX. At $225 (£170 in the UK), they’re not the cheapest hikers on the market either. So, bear all of this in mind should you decide to make a purchase.

Nevertheless, they’re a sound investment if you’re an avid hiker in the market for a capable shoe for technical hiking missions.

First impressions

Lowa are alpine footwear specialists with a long and illustrious heritage forged in the high hills of Europe. Famous for producing some of the best hiking boots on the market, the brand, now based in Italy but founded in Germany in 1923, recently celebrated its 100th birthday. The majority of Lowa’s top-end boots are still made in Europe, something that’s incredibly rare in an age of budget-cutting, off-shoring and mass production.

The benefit of this is the attention to detail, from design through to packaging, and a level of quality control that ensures each pair of hiking boots are pretty much perfect when they come out the box. All this is immediately evident in the Innovo, even though these are one of the more laid-back boots in the brand’s mountain-ready footlocker.

Of course, someone has to pay for such a process, so steeped in precision and prestige, and that someone is… you. Lowa don’t make cheap hiking boots, but if you’re looking for top-quality, comfortable outdoor footwear that’s going to last a decade or more, and perform precisely how is has promised to, then it’s worth the investment.

The Innovos are not as lightweight as many other brands’ offerings in the fast and breezy boot category, but they instantly feel more protective and capable than most, while being at least as comfortable straight out the box. And if you’re going to bother putting boots on – as opposed to simply hitting the trails in a pair of good hiking shoes – then you may as well get the benefit that the more extensive form of footwear offers: namely stability, support and security.

The Innovos looked great and felt good on my feet right from the outset, and I was looking forward to trail testing them.

Design & Materials

The Innovos have a chassis made from a mixture of soft suede and breathable synthetic material, backed by an Gore-Tex ePE waterproof breathable membrane. The boot is a Mid cut, as the name specifies, but some supposedly ‘Mid’ height boots have a collar that barely covers your ankle – not the Innovos. These bad boys extend well up and over the ankle, reaching to just below the bottom of your calf muscle, suppling proper levels of support to the lower leg.

They have a fully integrated tongue, and the lace system features three speed hooks that extent right up the collar. The combined result of this is that the boot offers a high level of waterproof protection up to and beyond the bottom of your hiking trousers or rain pants.

The Innovos are mid-width, and there is plenty of room in the toe box. Around the heel, Lowa's designers have added a lightweight 'monowrap support frame', which works as a 3D cradle to supply support to that crucial area. Extending right around the boot, this also operates as a rand, supplying protection for the side of the foot from shark sticks and stones. In addition, there’s a small toe cap to shield the wearer from toe stubs and bumps.

The considerable cushioning in the midsole comes thanks to DynaPU+, a kind of foam that supplies some degree of rebound with each foot placement. The suspension is enhanced by several extra layers of PU-foam padding. The boot is fairly flexible, and has been designed to roll with the foot during each stride.

The rubber outsole, made in house by Lowa from optimised rubber compound (rather than being brought in from a third party like Vibram), bristles with 5mm lugs, angled to provide grip and traction at the front, and braking control at the back. The chunky outsole is slightly higher at the rear too, but overall the bottom profile of the boot has a rocker shape (promoting a rolling cadence).

On the trails

Over the last four months I have been wearing the Innovo Mid GTX boots while hiking trails and scaling peaks in the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland, and also during slightly more mundane walking outings on my doorstep, taking the dog for strolls along my local stretch of the South West Coast Path. And herein lies the beauty of these boots: they’re basically good for everything from easy ambles through to more challenging escapades to the summit of (modest) mountain ranges.

Don’t get me wrong, you shouldn’t attempt to wear them to the top of technical peaks in the middle of winter – they’re not designed for that sort of high-end caper – but for the kind of hill hiking and coast-and-countryside walks the vast majority of us do most times we head out of the door, they’re absolutely perfect. And beyond day walks, they’re also ideal for overnight or multiday backpacking escapades, and hut hiking.

A swathe of lightweight boots have been released in recent years, by brands like Inov8 and Salomon, which are a bit like trail running shoes with a mid-height collar and are perfect for fastpacking. The Innovos are much more substantial than these, offering considerably more support and protection, and therefore they’re a bit heavier.

These boots are definitely designed for hiking, rather than trotting, but they’re still more nimble than a traditional hiking boot. The collar is exactly the right height to supply support when you are carrying a pack on a multiday adventure, or tackling technical low alpine terrain, and the cradle on the heel provides extra confidence too.

Ireland experienced a rare heatwave while I was in the Wicklow Mountains, so I was able to test the claims of breathability that Lowa make about the Innovo, and I can confirm that the combination of suede and a lighter, thinner synthetic in the chassis does make these boots reasonable cool to hike in. Gore-Tex membranes only really work (in terms of moisture control) when humidity is low, and that wasn’t the case in Wicklow in June, so there was a limit to how much my feet could breathe, but they would work better in the European Alps and other areas where the alpine air is drier.

Inevitably, I encountered plenty of jacket-drenching wet weather and boggy ground in the Irish Highlands too, especially on the top of Lugnaquilla, the highest peak in the Wicklow Mountains, which was entirely enveloped in cloud the entire time I was up there, ruining my chance to enjoy the apparently cracking views over Dublin Bay, but giving me a ample chance to test the waterproofing on these boots, which is very good. There were several stream crossings on the approach to this and other peaks, and I can attest that the integrated tongue and proper mid-height cut of the collar on the Innovo means you can wade through ankle-deep water without getting wet socks.

The outsole proved very grippy on rocky terrain, even in the wet, but I did find that the closely arranged lugs accumulated mud when I was hiking through boggy parts of the routes I was tackling.

Overall, however, the Innovo GTX Mids from Lowa are versatile, comfortable and highly capable boots, with excellent ankle and heel support, and top levels of lower foot and toe protection. They’re as breathable as you can reasonably expect any Gore-Tex membrane-lined boot to be, and the waterproofing is very good.

Barefoot hiking is a rapidly growing phenomenon in the outdoor world, as trekkers ditch the traditional rock plates and chunky outsoles of conventional hiking boots and shoes in favor of footwear that allows them to feel the ground beneath their feet as they move.

If you're keen to connect with nature and feel every inch of the trails, then you might want to check out the two latest models from barefoot specialist Vivobarefoot.

The new Primus Trail Flow Mid and Desert ESC hiking boots both feature minimalist outsoles built to allow your feet to flex, something that the brand says will actually make them stronger over time.

The Primus Trail Flow Mid

The Primus Trail Flow Mid boots are a super-minimalist pair, designed for fast, dynamic movement on the trails.

Their ultra-lightweight uppers are made from a water-resistant combination of recycled polyester and spandex. There's no insole to maximize the barefoot feeling, and the Trail Flow outsole aims to keep you close to the ground without compromising grip.

All in all, they weigh just 0.5oz (229g) (women's size 7.5) per boot, which puts them in the super-lightweight category, comparable to previous Vivobarefoot models like the Magna Lite SG.

Although the main materials in this pair are vegan, Vivobarefoot hasn't been able to confirm the status of smaller components like the adhesives and dyes used in production. The Vivobarefoot website reads: "Whilst we believe the shoes are vegan, we’re not yet able to guarantee it and want to be fully transparent."

At $220 (£170), these Vivobarefoot boots are a touch pricier than some other models on the market, but not outrageously expensive.

The Desert ESC

The Desert ESC hiking boots are a limited edition barefoot pair built to thrive in the blistering heat of the world's toughest desert environments.

They're made from tough, naturally moisture-wicking camel leather, designed to protect your feet from animals and debris on the trail without sacrificing breathability. The ESC Michelin outsole is also tough and features an aggressive lug formation to keep you from slipping while maintaining a barefoot feel.

The Desert ESC hiking boots weigh in at 1.2lb (551g) (men's size 9), which is pretty light considering the heft of other high-performance expedition boots.

This pair's price tag of $295 (£240) is also on the expensive side, although it's not too dissimilar to other desert models like the Quest 4D Gore-Tex Forces 2 boots from Salomon, which retail for $260 (£200).

Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid hiking boots: first impressions 

When you've been handcrafting hiking boots for over a century, like Lowa has, you know when you're onto a good thing, and that's why the German brand has revisited its highly acclaimed Renegade.

Designers of the Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid have added innovative technology to improve the fit, comfort and performance of the boot, and I think it excels on all counts. To be fair, we already loved its predecessor when we tested it back in 2022, with our expert reviewer calling it a 'modern classic' and concluding that it was sturdy, well-built and comfortable. With the recent upgrades, I'd say the Evo is as close to perfect as a boot can be for everything except technical winter hill hiking.

I tested this boot in the Highlands of Scotland and the hills of the Himalayas, from late winter to early summer, and found it to be comfortable both straight out of the box, and months later, even when I wore it for hours at a time and many days in a row. The dual-layer Dyna PU midsole is by no means the softest and plushest I've ever hiked in – in fact, you get quite good trail feel – but it's flexible and protective, and I've never experienced anything close to foot fatigue in these boots, even after seven hours of walking.

The comfort factor is also aided by customizable lacing zones and what Lowa calls its Monowrap support frame, which the brand says provides a three-dimensional cradle to guide and protect your foot over uneven surfaces. A higher than usual ankle cuff is more supportive than many boots I've tested, but remains very comfortable.

Speaking of uneven surfaces, for traction, the EVO boasts an exclusive Vibram outsole designed specifically for this model called Rene TRAC, and I've had no issues with grip whether I've been climbing over frosty rocks during alpine starts or romping across boggy British hills.

The Nubuck leather upper looks good even after more than 200 miles of walking, thanks in part to fewer seams in the construction, which the brand says cuts down on potential failure points. The upper manages to be breathable in warm weather, despite a Gore-Tex lining that kept my feet dry while wading through shallow streams.

It's not the lightest boot I've tested, and that's mostly down to it being a leather boot rather than synthetic, but it's by no means heavy either, and of course the trade off is a more durable construction. It also isn't a winter hiking boot, and in the coldest of weather, I did notice the lack of insulation. But it doesn't claim to be engineered for snow, we're just letting you know in case you need something for frigid temperatures.

It's also on the pricey end, but again, I'd expect to pay more for a higher quality boot that should last years.

In conclusion, this model is a big step forward from an already-great hiking boot and I've loved every step I've taken in it.

Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid hiking boots: in the field 

When I was offered the chance to trek over 11 days to Everest Base Camp, I knew I'd need a solid pair of hiking boots. I wanted something with more flex than my Hanwag Makra Trek boots for the long days, but suspected I'd need something sturdier than my super comfortable Columbia Konos TRS Mid.

I was already testing these boots, which I received from Lowa UK, and after wearing them on a two-day training hike in the Scottish Highlands, where I did nearly 20 miles (30km) in them without sore feet, I realized they were going to be perfect for my trek.

Between training for Base Camp in Scotland and the trek itself, I put over 200 miles (322km) in these boots from late winter through early summer to give them every chance to show me what they're capable of, and recently wore them again on a five-day thru-hike in the Lake District National Park. Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested these boots in a UK 4 (US 6), which is what I usually choose. It's a half size up to give my feet room to swell, and I'd say these boots fit true to size. I've worn them with fairly thick hiking socks and still had enough room for my toes, though I suspect I could have gotten away with going up a full size. Lowa also offer both wide and narrow options in select colorways so you can customize the fit.

When they arrived, I was worried that the toe box looked too narrow, but this hasn't been an issue at all. My higher arches often mean I suffer pain on the tops of my feet, but I've had no problems at all in these boots, and that may be down to the two independently adjustable lacing zones (one on the forefoot and one on the upper) that allow me to tailor the fit.

Though these boots don't have the plush, bouncy midsole of something like the Hoka Kaha 3s or my Columbia Konos, I'm able to wear them for at least six hours a day and over multiple consecutive days without ever experiencing any rubbing, blisters, or even foot fatigue. In fact, I don't recall once having that feeling of just wanting to tear my boots off at the end of the day, which is saying something. I put this down to the supportive fit, protection and just the right amount of flex in the sole.

Breathability and protection

These boots are waterproof, so I was a little worried about breathability, especially as we mostly experienced shorts weather on the trek to Everest Base Camp. I needn't have worried, however, as I never experienced overly sweaty feet (beyond what you'd expect while hiking in warm weather) and that remained true whether I was wearing wool or synthetic socks. Based on their performance in Nepal, I'm planning to continue hiking through the summer in the Renegade EVO GTX Mids.

Fortunately we didn't get much rain in the Himalayas, but I've put the Gore-Tex lining through its paces over the past few months here in Scotland, making a point to stand in a few streams as much to wash my boots as to test the membrane and I can say with confidence that it's watertight.

The clever sole manages to have a little flex and give a nice amount of trail feel, but still proves protective when I'm walking over rockier terrain, and of course the upper has added reinforcements around the toes.

I'm not someone that needs all my walking footwear to have ankle protection, but I'd say the higher ankle cuff gives good protection and stability while still being really comfortable.

The only time I noticed a chink in the armor was when I got up at 3am to hike Kala Patthar, which is even higher in elevation than Base Camp. It was a cloudless night and absolutely frigid out, and I did have some nippy toes by the time I reached the top. It was a short hike and wasn't a real issue, but just to underscore the point: these aren't winter boots.

Grip and stability

The yellow Vibram stamp on the outsole was a good indication to me that these were going to keep me on my feet come rain, mud or frost, and the Italian brand hasn't let me down. Whether I've been on slick, boggy terrain or steep, crumbly slopes, I've yet to slip in them. I can't say how much traction you'll get in snow and ice, but on the Khumbu glacier and over frosty rocks at Kala Patthar I had no issues with grip.

As for stability, I can't say I was aware of the frame that's been engineered to guide my foot until I read up on the specs, but I can say that I've been able to walk confidently across all types of terrain, from lumpy bogs to alpine tundra without a rolled ankle (although I do hike with trekking poles).

Value

There's no getting away from the fact that these aren't the cheapest boots on the market, but they're also far from the most expensive. Certainly, the price tag does exclude some customers, but you're getting a high-quality, long-lasting boot for the price.

That means Nubuck leather, a Vibram outsole, made in Europe and without any intentionally added PFAS, all of which I'd be happy to pay extra for, and I'm pleased to see that the sole has some recycled components to it.

I don't love everything about these boots. The toe box is on the narrow side and they have quite a high drop, which won't make them to everyone's taste, but I definitely think they're worth checking out if you're looking for something comfortable, lightweight and waterproof for straightforward trails.

Everest is growing, they say, and so is the mountain of gear in my living room as I prepare to trek to Everest Base Camp. Now, the trip is nearly here, and it’s time to make the final decisions about what’s coming with me when I board the flight to Kathmandu.

When I arrive, I’ll have two nights to recover from the flight and explore by day in 80°F (26°C) weather before I’ll pack everything I need for the trek into a duffel bag and board another flight to Lukla, where it will be significantly cooler – in the 50s (low teens in celsius) – and perhaps drizzly, and I’ll begin the 11-day trek.

If all goes well, I’ll arrive at Base Camp eight days later, where it will be below freezing during the day and sub-zero at night. So, do I just pack every piece of kit I own? Since I'm only allowed 33lb (15kg) for my flight to Lukla, that's a definite no.

The trek will be the longest and highest altitude adventure of my life, and I want to get it right. Luckily for me, the company I’m going with, a Welsh outfit called EverTrek, has furnished me with an elaborate kit list.

In examining it, you could walk away with the idea that you need a lot of gear for the 80-mile trek, but EverTrek Director of Supplier Relations Dave Carpenter warns me this isn’t totally true.

Keep it light

“When it comes to kit, the biggest piece of advice is to pack light,” says Carpenter.

Instead of worrying about bringing two fleeces or three jackets, he advises me to “keep it streamlined.”

“The truth is, you don’t need much. Life in the mountains is simpler, and your kit should reflect that. Focus on staying warm, cool, and dry and leave the extras behind.”

Warm and cool? Yep, I’m going to need layers. I’ve been whittling down my mountain, and here’s where I’ve landed for my clothing:

• Fjällräven Abisko Hybrid Trail Shorts: early on in the trek, it might be warm enough for shorts, and these proved stretchy and comfortable during a mountain hike last week, and like everything from the Scandi brand they’re pretty rugged.
• Patagonia Terravia Peak Pants: as we go higher and the weather cools, I’ll need good leg protection and I don’t know about you, but I prefer to have options for my lower body, adding thermal underwear and rain pants if I’m cold rather than risking overheating with fleece-lined pants. But knowing that I’ll also want something robust, I’ve opted for the new Patagonia Terravia Peak Pants, which are built specifically for multiday trips.
• Fjällräven Abisko Trail Fleece: I’m packing a couple of T-shirts and long sleeved base layers, mostly made from Merino wool, but one of the most important pieces of kit on a trek like this is a mid layer, which provides valuable insulation in cold temperatures, and can double as a light jacket when it’s mild. This jacket combines two different fleece fabrics to add warmth where I need it, but keeps weight and packing volume down, which ensures it wins out over my beloved Houdini Power Houdi. And not that I'll be thinking about this at 17,000ft, but it looks awesome, tailored to fit my body and not a cereal box, for once.
• Fjällräven Expeditions Pack Down Anorak: I’ve got my light and packable Rab Microlight Alpine jacket for when it gets cooler, but after hearing about the -10°F (-23°C) lows at Base Camp, I realized I need something built for polar conditions. This awesome anorak comes down lower than my bum and has a brilliant hood to shelter me against the wind. Despite how luxurious it feels on, it packs down small and even stuffs inside the kangaroo pocket to make a camping pillow, in the unlikely event my Big Agnes Rapide SL pillow isn’t enough.
• Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Stormhood: Living in Scotland has taught me just how important a weatherproof layer is, and it can be a constant balancing act to find a jacket that’s really durable but still quite light and packable. The Arc'teryx Beta AR Stormhood holds a lot of promise, using Gore-Tex Pro for rugged protection, plus a StormHood that adjusts to move with your head and maximize peripheral vision, and an embedded RECCO reflector for emergency situations.
• Rab Firewall Waterproof Pants: We’re likely to meet with some rain in lower altitudes and as we get higher, a cold wind can rear its head at any time, so for rugged leg protection which provides all the weather protection I’m likely to need, I went with these awesome lightweight pants. Thanks to the 3-layer Pertex Shield fabric, they’ll breathe when we’re climbing and are a bit of a workhorse in terms of durability.

Obviously, there’s more to add, but I consider the above to be the bulk of my layers, and together it all weighs around 2kg, leaving me plenty of wiggle room.

One exception

I’ve been focused on light layers, but one notable exception to my lighter-is-better approach is my sleeping bag. When my friend and fellow Advnture writer Jack McKeown warned me about how cold it can get at night, I hauled out my Big Agnes Torchlight EXP 0 sleeping bag.

It’s not my lightest or most packable bag, but with Sherpas (blessedly) carrying our gear, leaving me just to carry my daytime essentials in my Osprey Tempest 33 pack, I decided it was the best option. This toasty bag, from a Colorado brand I’ve known and trusted for years, can be expanded with an added zip, which means more options for sleeping positions and something I think is vital when I’m going to be using it for 11 nights straight.

Boots on the ground

The piece of kit I’ve spent the most time agonizing over is, of course, my hiking boots. As an outdoors journalist, I’ve got a pile to choose from, but unlike my hiking shorts, this is a choice that could easily make or break my entire trek. Blisters on a day hike are already insufferable, but on an 11-day trek? No thanks.

I want something protective but not too heavy, waterproof, and with enough cushion for long days. Needless to say, I’ve been doing a lot of hiking to prepare my body for the journey, and that’s given me time to test out different boots. I’ve finally settled on the Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid, which I’ve now put about 100 miles in. This is the newly updated version of the light, synthetic bestseller from the German brand.

They’re actually not the cushiest boots I own, and even provide a little trail feedback, but I’ve been able to put in back-to-back long days in them several times this spring without foot fatigue. Add to that the fact that they have a roomy toe box, and I might even get through the hike without losing too many toenails, plus with a mid-height cuff, they offer good protection.

Also on my feet, I’m taking the advice of my sister-in-law, who has historically suffered from bad blisters on long walks and I’m armed with several pairs of Injinji toe socks to cut down on rubbing (I’ll bring plenty of vaseline for that too). I’ll start in the lighter Injinji Liner Crew socks and work my way up to the Injinji Outdoor Midweight Crew Wool when it gets cooler. Thanks to the wool content, I won’t have to worry about smelly feet.

Here comes the sun

The thought of being cold is the one that keeps me up at night, and I’ve been hyper-focused on staying warm, but having lived in the Rockies for many years, I’m also preparing myself for how intense the sun can be. Long sleeves and sunscreen are of course a crucial start, but I also want to protect my skin from sunburn and my body from additional dehydration with a hat and sunglasses.

Last year I received the Columbia Bora Bora II Booney sun hat for a trip to the Swiss Alps, but it was a little too safari for my liking, so I put it aside in favor of a ball cap. Now that I’m seeking to really maximize sun protection, however, I’m appreciating the merits of a brim that goes all the way round, plus it has a chin strap so I don’t have to run back down to Lukla chasing it on a breezy day.

Since I’m now resigned to looking decidedly uncool in this hat, I’m just going to complete the look with the new SunGod FORTY2s sunglasses, which are actually trail running shades but I like that they provide all-day comfort, lots of crucial eye protection and a fair amount of coverage.

A secret weapon?

I’ve spoken to a few friends and colleagues about gathering kit for my trek, and each one has a “secret weapon.” For Carpenter, it’s a knee brace – like me, he’s been the recipient of a new ACL, but I find my awesome Leki Skytera FX Carbon SL trekking poles provide me with all the support I need.

Mountaineer Tracee Metcalfe, who recently became the first American woman to summit all 14 of the 8,000m peaks in the world, had a secret weapon idea that sounds like it could improve the quality of my experience:

“I would recommend hiking with a buff around your neck as much as you can, as it helps protect your throat and lungs from all the dust on the trail.”

When I speak to Jon Kedrowski, who’s been leading treks to Base Camp for years, he echoes this sentiment, explaining that the yaks along the trail are what can make the “dust” quite harmful.

“That livestock is pooing all over the trail, and that dust gets kicked up, and then you’re breathing that dust in and you’re breathing in feces, basically.”

Eager to protect my nasal passages and lungs from it all, my Buff Thermonet Multifunctional Neckwear is likely to be a permanent fixture around my neck.

A line to the outside world

I won’t lie, I’m looking forward to a bit of a digital detox on the trek, as signal is said to be spotty, but being away from my family for so long in a remote area, I do want to be contactable – and be able to get a message out if I need to. So I have a Garmin inReach device for this trek, which is a satellite communicator that allows me to send and receive messages.

Hopefully, I’ll just use this to keep in touch and won’t have any emergencies that can't be solved with Imodium, but I have some peace of mind knowing that it’s safely in my pack.

We rated the trainer-style versions of the Konos TRS Outdrys so were looking forward to putting these mid-height versions to the test. They are a little higher cut offering even greater protection and stability than the shoe-style hikers.

The sizing is a little small, so ordering a little larger than usual gave our tester Julia Clarke a good fit with room for feet to swell. The toe boxes of Columbia shoes aren't the widest, but sizing up will help with this too. And a secure lacing system along with ‘Navic Fit’ technology makes sure your feet don’t move around. The branded tech is called so because it hugs the ‘navicular’ bone across the midfoot giving you a snug fit without cramping.

The real key to comfort though is the incredibly plush midsole, which can keep you moving for miles without foot fatigue. You won't need to break them in – Julia wore them for two days straight from the box hiking rocky Val d'Anniviers in the Swiss Alps. There's enough flexibility in the uppers, even with the reinforcements that offer trail protection.

The weather was good so she took to springs and streams to test the waterproofing, which excelled even in deeper pools. The waterproof membrane that's bonded to the upper didn't breach, even under high-pressure water.

While you might not want to choose these hikers for hot-weather stomps, they do offer enough breathability to feel comfy on warm days.

As well as giving brilliant grip, the sole is incredibly flexible, so don't be put off if you want a responsive ride. There's plenty of stability to keep you surefooted on steep alpine descents, muddy slopes and wet rocks.

It's hard to find fault with this mid-cut hiking shoe, especially considering the fair price point. As with the trainer versions, it would be good to see recycled content in the materials list. Perhaps in a future version?

The best cheap hiking boots for day hikes

The first version of this popular mid-cut hiking boot was released back in 2007 and combined the stability and protection of a boot with the light and comfortable feel of a shoe. We were keen to see what updates the third generation featured.

The accommodating fit, wide toebox and plush padded ankle collar are still very much present, but there are a few upgrades: the uppers now have smaller mesh panels and more robust pigskin suede leather for better durability, backed with a waterproof Gore-Tex liner. The Moab more sustainable too – the mesh paneling, webbing and laces are now made from recycled materials.

There's a bit more arch support in the midsole than most mid boots, which gives enhanced stability and comfort. The outsole also has chunky 5mm lugs for great traction. It’s a well-built package.

On the trails our tester Matthew Jones found the Moabs coped well in almost all weathers. The Gore-Tex liner kept feet dry and mostly comfortable. The bellows tongue was a boon when negotiating puddles and boggy ground.

Breathability was good and only the warmest weather made them feel a little too hot. But it's not something to complain about as it's a common drawback of almost all Gore-Tex boots, especially those that are mostly made of leather, like the Moabs.

The boots are slightly heavier than many mid-cuts on the market, but still a solid all-rounder – ideal for day hiking.

The best cheap hiking boots for thru hiking

The Berghaus Expeditor Trek 2 truly is a boot for all seasons. And when you compare its features to a more expensive model, it really does have a great price point

As Berghaus states, it is a 'sturdy but light' boot that is designed to 'keep feet happy all day long'. A combination of suede, mesh and a waterproof membrane means this boot is both weatherproof and reasonably lightweight at 415g per boot.

Cushioned soles mean the hikers are comfortable from the off, and will allow you to keep walking all day long. It's down to the EVA midsoles, which are great shock absorbers, and the OrthoLite footbed, which is made of open-cell foam to enhance comfort and breathability. The Opti-Stud soles (Opti-Stud being Berhaus' patented lug technology) feature a mix of large and small studs, designed for enhanced grip on all terrain – and it certainly delivers, even on wet rock.

Our tester Sian Lewis didn't find fault with this boot, apart from the light grey colorway, which can stain easily and isn't the best choice if you like to start your mountain missions looking pristine.

For the fair price, you really can't go wrong with this versatile hiker.

The best cheap hiking boots for winter

You can tell instantly from the timeless look that Peter Storm has great heritage. The Snowdon model – named after the highest mountain in England and Wales (also known as Yr Wyddfa in Welsh) – is now in its second generation.

We're including it in this budget round-up because you'll be hard-pressed to find a timeless, leather hiker that has such a great price tag. And you can often find this boot retailing for much less than the official list price online.

But can the Snowdon IIs cut it on the trails? These durable boots are warm and waterproof. There's a sturdy toecap for protection on rocky ground and they are grippy enough to make you feel secure on wet mountain trails.

You do pay a price when it comes to weight and breathability. Our expert tester Sian Lewis found they looked and felt a little heavy, especially after a long day out. Plus, they feel clunkier than other models on test here.

However, if you're after a winter boot with a tough outsole and won't give out after miles in the mud, the Snowdon IIs are a great choice.

When it comes to first impressions we're big fans of the classic design of these handsome leather hikers. They are buttery soft and look great work with jeans as well as hiking trousers – a great boot to pack for a walking holiday where you’ll need something for daytime adventures as well as post walk tavern trips.

On the trail the Pilgrim IIs are waterproof enough to handle wet weather hikes, but you will need something with greater waterproofing for deluge days. The flipside is that they are nice and breathable.

When it comes to weight, our tester Sian Lewis found they were not the lightest on test, but for the money they are perfectly adequate for a full day hiking.

Without reinforced toes or top-quality traction, you'll want to keep these for valley path walks and countryside ambles rather than bushwhacking up mountain sides.

The most durable cheap hiking boots

For those outside the UK, the Duke of Edinburgh Award is a program that helps young people become fitter and healthier, develop new skills, help the community or environment and plan, training for and complete an expedition. On the affordable expedition kit list are these lightweight hikers, designed to offer all the comfort and protection you could need.

They are a classic leather hiker that is comfy straight out of the box and doesn’t need any breaking in. There's great cushioning in the midsole and feature a breathable membrane.

When it comes to foot and leg fatigue, our tester Sian Lewis found the breathability and cushioning helped to counteract the weight, which is heavier than others on test.

The rubber outsole gives great grip and if you hunt around you can find them at an even better price than their already reasonable list price.

We reckon they are a solid buy, whether you're planning your first expedition or are a seasoned hiker.

The best cheap hiking boots for summer

When it comes to price, you can't get much lower than Decathlon's MH100 mountain walking boots. Although, if you're looking for waterproof hikers you're going to feel cheated as, despite what the name suggests, these boots don't offer much protection against wet weather. A light sprinkle, perhaps, but little more than that.

Look over that for the minute and, as with much of Decathlon's offerings, you're still getting a great outdoor product for a very cheap price.

The tactile, fabric boots are impressively light – great for fair-weather adventurers and those who want a pair for overseas missions that won't weigh down luggage. The high top offers cushioned ankle protection, although our expert tester Sian Lewis would have preferred a narrower cut to match the support other mid-cut boots on the market offer.

If you're intending to carry a heavy pack, opt for something sturdier, but if you love to travel fast and light, or need something for more casual dog walks, the MH100s will serve you well.

The best lightweight cheap hiking boots

Despite the higher list price, this boot can often be found online for a lot less. And when it can, it's a real steal.

First impressions reveal that it's a solid and supportive piece of gear with a comprehensive lacing system. And it's not heavy. The fabric upper and carbon sole make this one of the lighter boots on test here – great if you prefer to feel light on the trails or enjoy easy day ambles.

In the field, our expert tester Sian Lewis found the Ravens to be waterproof enough to put up with rainy and wet conditions – the water beaded right off the outer fabric. The boot still has reasonable breathability, making it a good choice for the changeable shoulder seasons.

On the downside, the sole doesn't feature deep lugs, so you'll want to wear them on well established trails. And the lightweight uppers won't keep your feet insulated in bitter winter conditions. There is a solid toe box though, for extra protection.

Overall, a great pick for less-challenging paths.

How to choose the best cheap hiking boots

Bagging a pair of cheap hiking boots in store or online can make you feel a million dollars, but if you get them on the trail and find out they're not fit for purpose, you'll feel duped.

Where possible, it's good to try on walking boots before you buy. Or buy from brands with fair returns or exchange policies. Wear them around the house as much as possible to check the fit before you take them on the hills.

When you're browsing, consider some of the following factors and features, to help narrow your hunt.

Price point

You probably have a budget in mind and will be browsing in the stores and websites of brands at the lower end of the market. However, remember that at the end of a season, or as a new iteration of a boot is released, brands can slash prices of previous models. You can also find links to third-party retailers on our site that carry stock at reduced prices. And we always let you know when the biggest retails are holding special seasonal sales, such as Black Friday, with impressive reductions – keep an eye on our newsletter. Be savvy and you might pick up a bargain.

Budget hiking boots often won't feature branded technology – Gore-Tex waterproofing, for example – which is one of the reasons why outdoor gear is so expensive. However, the best cheap hiking boots in our guide still have great functionality, and if they fall down in an area of performance, we've flagged it so you're aware before you buy.

Material

The uppers of the best cheap hiking boots are made of either natural leather or a manmade fabric upper. There are advantages and disadvantages to each material and the one you choose will depend on what type of adventures you'll be using your boots for. More recently manufacturers are understanding consumers' desire for vegan products and are responding by labelling when boots are free from animal products.

Leather tends to be warmer and is naturally water-resistant, but can be heavier and less breathable than fabric. Leather boots often require more maintenance and more breaking-in than fabric boots – while the latter offer more trainer-like comfort. As a general rule, we recommend warm leather boots for winter use, and more breathable fabric boots for summer use – it’s a good idea to own a pair of each.

Grip

Hiking boot outsoles are usually made from rubber or thermoplastic rubber and are designed to be durable and give great grip and traction. Lugs, which are the raised textures on the sole surrounded by grooves, give you braking and control when hiking in wet and boggy conditions. Generally, the deeper the lugs, the more grip. The make up of the tread pattern contributes to the effectiveness of the sole, and some designs are better than others at shedding mud and grit.

When it comes to compounds, softer ones tend to provide more grip, but harder ones typically wear better.

Waterproofing

Are you looking for a workhorse of a boot that will keep you hiking through all seasons and in all conditions? Then, unless you live in a warm clime, good waterproofing will be at the top of your must-have list.

A boot that features a waterproof membrane should keep your feet dry while also allowing them to breath. You might be lucky and find a low-priced Gore-Tex boot, but most budget models use cheaper own-brand membranes, some of which are excellent. Refer to our reviews rather than relying on brand marketing material though.

A boot that fits well and laces up snugly around your ankle will also help keep out splashes from puddles. And the higher the cuff, the deeper the streams you can wade through (just check that the waterproofing runs up to the top of the cuff).

Cut and fit

Whether you're shopping at the higher end of the market or looking for a steal, the cut and fit of a hiking boot is important to get right. Some brands, such as Saloman, tend to have a narrower fit, while others, such as Keen, cater for wider feet.

Do you prefer a narrow toe box that helps keep your feet in position and are more adept for scrambling and climbing? Or do you like space for your toes to relax and splay as you walk and give room for warm feet to swell without pain?

When you lace up the boots does the cuff come up high enough to give you stability and protection, without rubbing on your ankle bone? Is there enough cushioning to keep things comfy?

Is the midsole cushioned and supported enough to suit your arches? Getting this right will help relieve foot fatigue on the trails.

FAQs

What's the difference between cheap and expensive hiking boots?

There are myriad factors that come into play when brands price up a hiking boot, including materials, construction and extra features. The brands' overheads also play a part. These can include place of manufacture, sustainability, staffing and how much research and development the brand conducts.

Very generally, more expensive boots feature higher-quality, more durable materials such as better-grade leather or breathable synthetic materials. Laces may be non-slip and soles may be tougher and last longer. More time may have gone into the design and there may be more releases in market-led shapes and colour ways.

More expensive boots may feature branded technology, such as Vibram, which owns patented types of rubber outsoles. They are also often designed with a particular type of trekking in mind, for example, in winter weather or at high altitude.

However, as manufacturing technology advances and the outdoor market grows, many high-performance materials are available at a lower price. And with consumers demanding more cutting-edge kit, you can find early models of boots, which can still be great performers, at reduced prices.

When should I replace my old hiking boots?

It's usually easy to tell when you need a new pair of boots. Out on the hills you may find water breaching more easily than it used to, you may notice the grip isn't enough any more and you may feel the boots sagging and less supportive around your ankles.

Are you getting more pain in your legs, or in your feet? This can happen when the insoles give way. Visually, you can see if the lugs are wearing down in places, or if there are tears or splits in the uppers – this all means they aren't protecting you and preventing you from injury as they should.

Even if your old boots haven't worn out, you may still need to invest in another pair if you are planning on a specific type of expedition. This could be a summer hiking holiday where the weather will be scorching and you need boots that are as lightweight and as breathable as possible. Or, are you endeavoring on a multi-day high-altitude mission where you could encounter anything from snow to torrential rain? If so, you'll need a sturdy boot with great traction and reliable waterproofing.

Are hiking boots overkill?

Hiking boots do a brilliant job of providing support and stability on the trails, helping ease leg fatigue. They are ideal for rugged terrain, longer hikes and bad weather. They'll also give support when you're carrying a heavy pack and protect your ankles from trail hazards.

Hiking boots have come a long way in the past couple of decades, and many are light and breathable while still offering great protection. The height of the cuff can vary dramatically from boot to boot, so if you'd prefer less ankle support for shorter, warmer hikes, choose a lower-cut boot .

The Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX hiking boot has landed, with a few significant upgrades over its predecessor. The X Ultra line is all about blurring the line between a cushioned, agile trail running shoe and a more rugged hiking boot, and with the 5, the brand has focused on refining a few details that let the previous model down.

Most significantly, the upper is now engineered from bulletproof Matryx, which we've seen in shoes like the Merrell Long Sky 2. It's known to be ultra durable and should fix the issues some hikers were having with the upper in the previous model wearing out. Once again, that's combined with a Gore-Tex membrane to help keep water out for those flooded spring trails.

The outsole has also been reimagined to better cope with more technical terrain, sporting deeper (and more durable) angular lugs in the All-Terrain Contagrip rubber compound to better bite into snow, mud, you name it.

So it's certainly burlier, but how does it hold up in the comfort department?

A plusher tongue and collar are said to improve your long-distance walking experience for starters. While it's the same Chassis system as the previous model that consists of lateral inserts on each side of the shoe to cradle your foot and avoid ankle injuries, the brand says it's made changes to the overall design, including the lacing system, for a "virtually customized fit" that helps stabilize your foot without restricting its movement.

A molded, breathable OrthoLite sockliner adds extra comfort and it looks to be more flexible than the most rugged boots and cut down on foot fatigue over long distances.

The Italian – but German-speaking – region of South Tyrol is a magnificent alpine arena that plays host to a range of staggering mountain ranges, including large parts of the world-famous Dolomites. The region produced arguably the world’s greatest ever mountaineer, the legendary Reinhold Messner, and is home to leading European mountain brand Salewa. Its spectacular highest mountain, the Ortler, is known in German as König Ortler. König is the German word for King.

Founded in Munich in 1935, these days Salewa is based in Bolzano, South Tyrol’s capital. Take a peek at its mountaineering clothing and equipment and you’ll see many pieces that are named in homage to the Ortler, or Ortles in Italian. From mountaineering boots and robust waterproof jackets to down jackets and technical backpacks like the Ortles Wall 38L, the Ortles range has just about everything an alpinist needs to tackle the big mountains with confidence.

There are three members of the Ortles boot family: the Light, the Edge and the Ascent. The Ortles Light, as its name suggests, is the lightest option, designed for fast alpine missions. The Edge is only slightly heavier, offering rugged versatility – a solid all-rounder. The Ascent swaps the synthetic uppers of the Light and Edge for a robust suede upper and features Vibram, rather than the Pomoca, in the rubber outsole. It’s the heaviest, most expensive and most technical of the trio.

I was stoked to test the all-rounder, the Ortles Edge Mid Gore-Tex mountaineering boot, through the winter season. It would be interesting seeing how well it took to the unique challenges of the UK’s winter mountains.

First Impressions

My first impression of the Ortles Edge was its contemporary aesthetic. The use of nylon instead of leather, the elasticated heel gaiter and the angular, flexible lace hooks all create a sense of modern, cutting-edge design. It does away with the traditional looks seen in many Italian boots, such as the Zamberlan Baltoro 1000 GTX or the Aku Tengu GTX, to achieve something that looks fresh, without the racecar showiness of something like Scarpa’s Ribelle Lite HD.

So, we’re dealing with smart and modern mountaineering boot here. First wear revealed a less rigid fit than most, even compared to a classic like La Sportiva’s Trango Tower GTX. For a mountaineering boot, the comfort here is exceptional. When I wiggled my feet around, it was only at the toe where I was reminded of the fact that I was wearing robust beasts designed for wedging into cracks or kicking steps into frozen terrain. They feel softer than much of the competition, perhaps due to their use of synthetic materials.

I was immediately taken with the elasticated nylon heel gaiter and the amount of padding around the ankle. It not only makes taking them on and off easier, I suspected straight away that it would equal greater comfort in this high wear area in the long run. There are a few places that mountaineering boots can rub during a long, challenging day out and the top of the Achilles is a prime candidate – a boot’s Achilles heel, if you will. I was intrigued to see if the Ortles Edge’s elasticated heel would solve this issue.

Meet the reviewer

Features

As mentioned, the Ortles Edge makes use of hard-wearing nylon in the upper, provided by Swiss outdoor textile manufacturer Schoeller. This is complemented by a TPU rand around the front of the foot and reinforcement at the heel. These protective features are essential in a winter boot, protecting the foot from the rigors associated with mountaineering.

As usual with Salewa’s mountain footwear, the boot features the brand’s 3F system, a web of Kevlar cables that sit between the outer and the waterproof membrane to enhance the overall performance, stability and durability of the upper. As advertised in the boot’s name, Gore-Tex provide the 'Performance Comfort' breathable, waterproof membrane.

Like the excellent Salewa Pedroc Powertex hiking shoes that I reviewed last year, the Ortles Edge deploys Pomoca rubber in the outsole. Pomoca is a Swiss manufacturer of ski touring skins and rubber soles and is part of the wider Oberalp Group, which also includes Salewa and Dynafit, among others. The design of the Alpine Dynamic outsole is fairly standard for this kind of boot, with approach shoe style flat climbing zones at the toes and heel and spaced lugs in between for traction on mixed terrain. This pattern makes them grippy on rocky, scrambling terrain, while the heel welt makes them compatible with C2, step-in crampons.

There’s noticeably more flex in the forefoot region of the outsole than in many mountaineering boots, which would be a concern on the sort of highly technical ground where a properly rigid sole is a must. These aren’t for ice climbing or truly challenging alpinism but they're great for classic mountaineering and winter walking.

Cushioning comes courtesy of a dual-density EVA midsole, providing comfort on those long walk ins. Better still, there’s customization in the form of the Multi Fit Footbed Plus system, allowing the wearer to narrow the fit by inserting an additional insole. Salewa’s standard lasts tend to be broad compared to most, so having the option to narrow the fit is a welcome one.

The ankle region has a notable amount of padding and the height of the tongue can be adjusted using a Velcro fastening. This allows the wearer to find the ideal fit and hopefully comfort in what is usually a high wear region. As mentioned, there’s an elasticated heel cuff, which Salewa calls the Ankle Protector System (APS). It’s intended to provide extra lateral support for the ankle during descents and I was intrigued to see the difference it would make.

A word on the lacing system, which features adaptive eyelets that sit on little hinges and are free to move with the wearer, helping to support the foot’s natural movement. The third eyelets up from the toe feature a locking mechanism that holds the fit of the lower laces in place and can be loosened via a little lever. It’s a handy design feature when it comes to finding either a tight fit for precision when climbing or a more relaxed fit when covering the long miles. This kind of attention to detail is one of the features that elevates the Ortles Edge above much of the competition.

In the mountains

I've been wearing the Ortles Edge throughout the winter season on adventures in Scotland's Cairngorms National Park, England's Lake District National Park and Wales' Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park.

The obvious headline here is that, for a mountaineering boot, these are very comfortable on the trails, much more so than classics like the La Sportiva Trango Tower or the Scarpa Manta Tech. The flexibility in the sole and the ankle, coupled with their relatively low weight (per boot 110g less than the Trangos and 245g less than the Mantas), means that they feel nimble on long approaches and during hiking or scrambling days. Some mountaineering boots I wouldn't consider unless I was heading into wintry terrain – not so with the Ortles Edges.

All of this, of course, comes with a catch. The Ortles Edge's more flexible sole means that it is less suited to steeper, more technical winter climbing beyond the lower grades. If that kinda thing is your bag, you'll be better served by something like Scarpa's Manta Techs.

Nevertheless, for the sort of easy mountaineering and winter walking I enjoy, coupled with long walk ins, the Ortles Edges were ideal. Their sole grips scrambling terrain with aplomb and, once above the snow line, they provided all the ruggedness required to kick steps. I'm looking forward to letting them loose in the Alps, where I'd imagine they'd really come into their own. I coupled them up nicely with the Grivel Air Tech New-Matic EVO Crampons, forming a lightweight C2 crampons and B2 boot partnership that was well suited to low grade mountaineering, where speed takes precedence over technical difficulty.

I endured some fairly cold outings up in Scotland and was half expecting the Ortles Edges to be a let down when it came to insulation, based on their alpine, rather than Scottish winter, credentials. However, I found them to be perfectly toasty. While some of my mountaineering buddies were complaining of cold feet, I was totally fine and my feet were nicely dry. Nevertheless, they're not as insulated as some winter boots and I admittedly haven't tested them in really frigid temps yet.

As for blisters and the like, even after long, committing walk ins, I found my feet were relatively unscathed, even during initial wears. This certainly isn't a boot that needs a whole season to break in.

All in all, an impressively lightweight mountaineering boot that's ideal for the faster, less committing and less technical winter and alpine objectives.

The Speedgoat 5 trail running shoes are well-loved for their performance in fast-paced adventures, and the Mid version takes all the same assets and adds ankle support for hikers as well as trail runners.

That means you can take advantage of that cushioned midsole (31 mm in the heel, 27 mm in the forefoot) and rocker profile to help propel you along the trail, plus a heel-cradling bolster for stability and fortified toe cap.

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots: first impressions 

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots are lightweight mountaineering boots that are capable of providing protection for winter hiking, alpine climbing and glacier trekking.

These winter hiking boots may not be as heavy or rugged-looking as some, but the stiff sole and Vibram technology makes for reliable footing whether you're edging along a rocky scramble or kicking into snow. If the snow gets deep enough that you need additional traction, they're compatible with a C2 crampon thanks to a heel bail.

For warmth, we've found these boots to be mostly adequate for winter conditions, but not the warmest winter boots out there. For that reason, we think they're great for high alpine trekking in milder conditions, and your feet are protected from wet and damp thanks to a breathable waterproof Futurelight membrane. There's also plenty of protection for your feet and toes thanks to a well-reinforced upper.

The fit and toe box will undoubtedly be too narrow for some and the lacing system doesn't necessarily get as secure a fit as we'd like, but the Lycra collar helps keep debris out and we've been impressed by the out-of-the-box comfort and versatility of these light but technical boots.

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots: in the field

I got these boots for a glacier trek on the Glacier du Géant in the Alps last year where it was snowy enough that I ended up wearing them with snowshoes. This year, I've been wearing them to summit some winter Munros – those are Scotland's highest peaks – in winter conditions where I've got to test out their winter and crampon capability.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort 

I always go up a half size in hiking boots, and though I was worried about the narrow toe box with these, the UK 4 fit my 3.5 feet perfectly. They look really narrow, but it's not an issue for my feet and I find that once I've got my hiking socks on and they're laced up, they have a secure fit. That said, the lacing system around the ankles doesn't quite deliver the lockdown fit I'd expect and I quite often discover my laces have come undone on the trail, but obviously laces are replaceable.

The first time I wore these was to trek across the Glacier du Géant in the Alps. Ordinarily, I'd want to break boots in for that type of excursion, but it was a whirlwind press trip and the boots were waiting for me at my hotel when I arrived. Luckily, they were and still are totally comfortable on first wear with no rubbing anywhere.

Protection and breathability

These boots are very light, but there's nothing watered down about them. The soles are super stiff so they've been great for taking on rocky sections of Munro summits, and the narrower fit makes it easier to wedge my toe into small spaces in the rock. Because the upper needs to withstand a crampon it's got plenty of reinforcements for my toes.

In Scottish winters, protection against moisture is probably the most important feature and I've found the Futurelight bootie to be ample even when I've spent a full day wading around in the snow.

They're definitely not the warmest winter boots on the market and on a recent winter trek my toes were the only thing that got a bit nippy, though keeping moving was enough to not let that ruin my day. I haven't had any issues with breathability, but I've only worn these in cold conditions and I don't have the sweatiest feet, however I have had good experiences with Futurelight's breathability in other products.

Grip and stability

Even though I've tended to wear these boots with traction devices, I spent plenty of time wearing them in the snow without crampons recently up in Glencoe and traction just wasn't an issue. The Vibram soles do what they always do and I'd trust these in most conditions.

A stiff sole doesn't make for the most intuitive gait, but it's necessary for winter and crampons. I haven't had issues with foot fatigue or stability in these boots, but again, I've mostly been climbing in snow, not just trekking along a steady trail.

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots: the bottom line

I'm impressed enough by the comfort and technical capabilities of these boots that I'm thinking of bringing them along for a Himalayan trek later this year. I love that they're light and comfortable but still deliver a lot of protection in winter conditions. Their light weight also makes them a good choice for adventure travel. If you're looking for something a little warmer that fits a broader foot, the Scarpa Manta Tech GTX come at a similar price point.

Danner Jag II hiking boots: first impressions

The original Danner Jag first hit the trail in the 1980s and the last 40 years have given the Oregon-based brand plenty of time to think about how they want to improve it. Enter the Jag II, which harnesses modern technology to give you lightweight comfort for long days on the trails.

By combining the shank, lasting board, and midsole into a one-piece, the brand says it was able to shave some significant grams off the weight of the boot without sacrificing support, and that means you can wear these all day without suffering from foot fatigue.

We found these retro-styled hiking boots needed no breaking in whatsoever and we’ve been able to walk in them for hours with no rubbing thanks to the dual-density PU midsole and better-supported heel. We’ve waded through shallow streams and bogs in them with dry feet thanks to the waterproof membrane.

Like most, if not all, Danner boots, they’re great-looking and recraftable, so you can keep wearing them for years to come. Danner says this model has a roomier toe box than previous models, but we feel it could be a little roomier still.

Instead of going with a Vibram outsole, the brand has used its own Danner Waffle technology which we found was no match for steep, muddy trails, but the boot is built for light trails and on those, we have no complaints. It’s not the cheapest pair of hiking boots we’ve ever worn, but compared to many Danner models, it comes at a decent price, too.

Danner Jag II hiking boots: on the trails

I’ve been testing these boots out for a couple of months on the trails of Scotland as well as in the Lake District National Park as the weather has gone from mild and dry to cold and wet.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I went with my usual size – that’s a US 6, which gives me an extra half size to allow my feet room to swell on the trail – and I’d say these fit true to size.

The fit has a really nice cradling effect around my heel and midfoot which makes them feel really secure, and all I really need to do is tie the laces nice and tight around my ankle for a great fit. I wouldn’t say my toes are cramped in them by any means, but I’d like a little more room around the toe box, even though Danner says this has been improved. Or maybe I just need to go up a full size?

As for comfort, unlike the Danner Mountain Pass which were my first boots from the brand and required a bit of breaking in, these were comfortable out of the box and stayed that way for many miles on the trail, thanks to the lighter weight and well-cushioned midsoles.

Protection and breathability

These aren’t your most rugged hiking boots, but they offer a good amount of protection in the places I want it most, like my toes and ankles, and I’ve made sure to wade through a few shallow streams and boggy areas to test out the waterproof membrane, which works a charm and has kept me feet dry despite a really wet few months here.

Waterproof boots do usually mean sweaty feet, but since I’ve been testing these in autumn and winter, I have to admit that hasn’t been a problem. Even in milder weather, my feet haven’t been sweaty but obviously I would choose them for a hot, dry hike anyway.

Traction and stability

Danner sometimes uses Vibram soles (as in the Mountain Pass) and sometimes uses its own technology. In these boots, the brand has gone with a proprietary outsole known as Danner Waffle and even though the lugs aren’t terrifically deep, for my first few hikes, I was pretty pleased with the grip. However, I recently wore them for a very steep climb in particularly muddy conditions and found that on the downhill, they weren’t quite up to scratch.

I want to qualify this by saying that very few outsoles are really a match for this particular hike when it's been raining, but I did slip twice and twisted my knee a little which didn’t leave me with any lasting damage but definitely means I’m saving these for gentler hikes, which in fairness is what they’re designed for.

Thanks to the cradling effect of the design, not too much drop and little flex in the sole, I get nice smooth ride in these boots, even when I’m picking my way from tussock to tussock in a bog. That said, there’s not much in the way of trail feel.

Danner Jag II hiking boots: the bottom line

If you want a pair of hiking boots for everyday trails that are light, comfortable and good-looking, there’s a lot to like about these high-quality boots that you can wear around town as well as on a hike. They’re more suited for hiking than the FP Movement Jag Quilt and cheaper than the Mountain Pass. That said, we did find wet rocks and steep, muddy slopes a bit much even for these shoes and skidded a few times, but then again, it's easier to catch yourself in barefoot shoes.

It's fair to say that at $250, you're likely to think twice about buying these, especially if you've never tried barefoot shoes before, but we think you'll have a hard time finding another pair that performs as well as these, especially if you're venturing out in wet and cold conditions.

Vivobarefoot Tracker Textile AT hiking boots: in the field 

I'm not exactly a barefoot shoe veteran, but last year I wore a pair of the Vivobarefoot Magna Lite SG hiking boots every day for six weeks and really discovered some amazing benefits. Those boots, however, are purely for summer hiking, so I was keen to try a pair of the Trackers, which are better built for cold and wet conditions.

These boots showed up a couple of months ago and I took them on a family holiday to break them in (though none is required) over a week of gentle walks in the countryside and since then, I've tested them out on frozen bogs in the Lake District and up some smaller hills and peaks in Scotland.

Here's how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a US 6 (UK 4) which is a half size up from my normal size the size I usually choose in hiking and running shoes to give my feet room to swell. Of course, the nature of barefoot shoes is that they have a wide toe box and a roomy fit, so I probably didn't have to size up, but while these definitely feel spacious, I haven't had any issue with them being too loose. A good tight knot around the ankle keeps them in place and leaves my feet with plenty of room to swell.

Like the Magna Lites, I'm mostly impressed by how comfortable these are, however on a recent short and steep hike, I did notice that I had a little rubbing around my heels. This hasn't been an issue previously on flatter walks and it wasn't bad enough to make me not wear them, but something I'll definitely be conscious of.

Protection and breathability

I don't think of barefoot shoes as offering a ton of protection, but these are a bit of an exception. The upper, while light and flexible, still manages to provide my feet with a bit of cushioning against rough trails. They might not be as warm as a pair of winter boots, but the thermal insert definitely has made a difference during what has turned out to be a record-cold November here, and I think it's great that you can remove it in the summer.

To test the waterproof membrane, I stood in a shallow river on my first day out in these and not a drop got in, so I've been happily wading through bogs and wet grass in them.

As for what's underfoot, I'm once again impressed by how I can get a really intimate experience of the trail and no actual discomfort when I'm walking over stony paths.

I've mostly been wearing these boots in cool or cold weather, so I can't say for certain that they're going to be ultra-breathable in the hottest conditions, but so far I've not struggled with sweaty feet.

Traction and stability

The AT in these boots stands for "All Terrain" and for my first month of wearing these, I was really impressed with the traction as I didn't slip once over muddy trails or frozen bog. The outsoles have really deep lugs which have the added bonus of creating a little space between my feet and the trails. More recently, however, I discovered that the outsoles have their limit, and that limit seems to be slick rock and very steep, muddy trails. I did skid three or four times on a recent hike under those conditions.

Like a lot of the best hiking gear, I can imagine happily wearing these on just about any Rocky Mountain hike, but here in the UK, I might need a different pair of boots for slick days.

That said, the beauty (for me) of barefoot shoes is that I'm just overall more stable and balanced on the trails, so a slip here or there isn't as difficult to rebound from as when I'm wearing sturdy boots with stiff soles. These soles are extremely flexible which means I can walk really effortlessly across all types of challenging terrain, so long as it's not too slippery.

Vivobarefoot Tracker Textile AT hiking boots: the bottom line

The Tracker AT might not really be for all terrain, but it definitely holds up against the best of them. If you're seeking the performance of a flexible barefoot shoe but want a bit more protection than your average style, you'll love this boot, although be warned the grip isn't failsafe on the slickest surfaces. It has great eco creds, but a big price tag. That said, we think you get more for your money than the similarly priced Magna Lite SG.
