Primus Micron III: first impressions

My first experience with a camping stove was an old army surplus Trangia stove. It was battered and weighty and I can still remember my frustration as the phrase “a watched pot never boils” rattled around my head while the water for my coffee slowly transitioned from lukewarm to somewhere close to boiling without ever seeming capable for getting there.

Since then there have been incredible advancements to camping stove technology, whether you require something complex or simple. I tested the Primus Micron III over the summer, mainly using it for boiling water for dried hiking meals and much-needed morning coffee.

The Micron III has a simple design that directly screws on top of a standard threaded gas canister. The three pot supports fold diagonally to ensure an ergonomic profile, and all lock into place with a satisfying click.

This model has no built in ignition or regulator. However Primus does have a version with an external matchstick style igniter at the cost of a little extra weight.

There is no gas regulator on either model however, so anyone planning to use this in very cold conditions should take note that this could affect the performance.

Weight and packability

The most notable feature of this stove is undoubtedly its weight (or lack of it) - coming in at 2.11oz (60g) with the included nylon bag and 2.01oz (57g) without if you are seriously counting grams.

Primus has used aluminium throughout the construction to keep the weight down. The dimensions of the stove are tiny too. At 2.44 x 1.61in (62 x 41mm) it fits snuggly in the palm of your hand. I kept the stove within my pot and gas system, but can see how easy it would be to lose such a small part of your gear if not kept somewhere safe.

Folded out for use, the stove sits at 3.14in (80mm) high with a 3.74in (95mm) wide base for your pot. Given the quite minimal dimensions of the stove when in use, it is more suited for wild camping where boiling water for dehydrated meals is the top priority, than using with heavy pans.

Cooking speed and functionality

The stove works as most do. You thread it on to the canister, turn the pleasantly grippy and oversized valve handle and ignite the gas. It took quite a few turns to get the flame to full power but the flame is highly directional and puts out 2600w of power with the valve fully open.

The flame is designed to be wind resistant, but I found that, as the stove stands so tall off the canister, that it can be quite susceptible to wind if there are strong gusts blowing. The stove sits at 5.5in (140mm) tall when attached to a standard 3.5oz (100g) canister, and I found this affected its stability. The flip side to this height is increased functionality when using a pan if you want to heat food directly rather than just boil water.

Primus claims that the stove can boil 500ml of water in 2 mins 30 secs. In sheltered conditions I was able to get the water boiling in 2 mins 27 secs. When using it in the porch of my tent however, with a whipping wind coming under, this stretched to between 2 mins and 50 secs to 3 mins and 15 secs. By comparison, my Jetboil took 2 mins 38 secs in sheltered conditions and 3 mins 37 secs when it was windy.

Primus recommends that you use its Essential Trek pots with this stove, as they have a slimmer profile and therefore in theory will boil quicker. The pot I was using was slightly wider than an Essential Trek pot, so it’s good to know there’s potential for the process to be sped up further. Overall, I found the power of the stove to pack quite a punch, even with slightly increased boil times due to the wind.

Jetboil Genesis Basecamp System Isobutane: first impressions 

Jetboil took its award-winning Genesis Basecamp System and made it compatible with standard isobutane fuel canisters. This ingenious double-burner stove combines lightweight portability with ferocious power to give you a complete kitchen when you're car camping.

The Basecamp System comes neatly packed inside a carrying bag with a handle, and the savvy stove folds in half and easily locks shut for stowing and transportation. When you're ready to cook, unfold it and screw on your fuel regulator – the gas canister can fuel both rings at once.

To ignite the rings, turn the knob and flick an ignition switch. The burners will roar to life and you can juggle a 5l FluxPot to cook pasta, rice, potatoes or soup as well as a ceramic-coated nonstick fry pan for eggs, veggies, burgers or whatever camping meal you fancy on the day.

Water will boil in under three minutes and your frying pan will heat up lightning quick, but you can turn the burners down and manage heat flow quite well. The included wind screen isn't the best we've tried, but you'd need to be cooking in a gale for wind to pose any real threat to the flame.

When you're finished cooking, the materials barely retain any heat so you can pack them up instantly and get on your way if you're in a rush.

Neat, efficient, light and easy to use, this camping stove is an absolute dream for any car camper and the only thing that will make you think twice is the high price.

JetBoil Genesis Basecamp System Isobutane: in the field 

I've been adventuring with my Jetboil Flash 1.0 for a while now, which is great for quickly making a backpacking meal or hot chocolate, but if I'm car camping with my partner and family, it's always been our trusty Trangia that feeds us.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Trangia for reasons I've written about here, but when I heard that Jetboil had updated its double-burner Basecamp System, I jumped at the chance to give it a shot.

I first tested this out in the backyard so I wouldn't find myself struggling with it in the wild with hungry children glaring at me, and the pictures I've shared here are from that experiment. However, we've since had it out on every car camping trip this summer.

Design and features

My only other experience with a double-burner stove is the Vango Combi IR Grill Compact, which folds up like a suitcase, but this one has quite a genius design.

The neat, circular stove folds in half to stack the two burners for transport and storage. There's a handle on both sides that clips away and means you can easily pull it out no matter which way it was facing when you packed it. Simply unclip the rubber leashes that secure it and unfold it, and you have two circular burners side by side.

The fuel connector screws into the stove and into any isobutane canister, and there's a knob on each burner to control the gas flow, with two ignition levers to light them.

The stove comes with a 5l FluxPot and 10in (25cm) ceramic-coated nonstick fry pan, both of which are lightweight and have handles that remain cool when you're cooking and fold away. The 5l pot has a lid to help boil water faster, and there's a windscreen included.

Weight and packability

The whole package is designed to easily pack inside the 5l pot, and it comes with a cylindrical carry bag with handles that makes it super-easy to carry from car to campsite. There's even a little extra room for other kitchen utensils (I keep a spatula, sporks, and chopping board in there now).

Compared to a lot of other portable double-burner stoves, it's really quite light and a lot more packable, easily stashing into the very small trunk of our tiny car or behind the front seats.

Ease of use and performance

In my initial field test, I wanted to see how far I could get without reading the instruction manual, and in fact, it's all pretty intuitive.

I unfolded the stove and connected the fuel. I only needed to check the manual to find the ignition, which is a small red lever that I had to flick once for fire. The burners roared to life ferociously, and I set about bringing one liter of water to a boil and frying an egg.

Because I was only boiling one liter of water, it was bubbling in about two minutes, while my egg started to bubble away before I realized I needed to turn the heat way down underneath it. Suffice to say, it all happens in a Jetboil flash.

Because I was just giving the stove a quick test, I packed it all up almost immediately and was pleased to find the equipment wasn't super hot and I didn't have to hang around waiting for it to cool.

Over time we've figured out how to cook food at a lower setting. Now, our eggs don't have bubbles in them and this summer we've successfully made pasta, sausages and mash, and several nice cooked breakfasts.

We've managed to nail the simmer function, but if you want to cook things on a really low heat, you might struggle, but that's not a priority for me at camp because the aim of the game is always food, fast. The only drawback, compared to my Vango stove, is that you can't make toast.

Unusually for Scotland, we've not had to contend with much wind recently, which is good because the Basecamp System's wind screen isn't the best. It's a plastic sheet that site near the stove, but it's a little flimsy and unwieldy. That said, I think it would take a serious wind to affect the burners, and in that instance, I'd think about setting up elsewhere. Since this stove is designed for car campers, you could obviously use your car as a wind screen.

Durability and value

This stove is built of tough stuff and doesn't creak unnervingly like my Vango, which makes it seem cheap in comparison. The pans are equally sturdy and well designed.

The Jetboil Genesis Basecamp System Isobutane is a top-of-the-line double burner and in comparison to the competition, it truly excels in packability and weight, ease of use and quick boiling performance. You won't be surprised to hear that it's easily the priciest we've tested, but you certainly get what you pay for, and if you love car camping, there's no reason why this spend won't make you very happy.

Leatherman has launched a voluntary recall of two of its popular multi-tool models due to a design flaw that may pose a risk of injury to users.

According to an alert by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Portland-based multi-tool pioneer has issued a recall of the models after discovering the flaw, which Leatherman says only affects “a small portion of units.” According to the official recall, the tip of the knife blade in some units may not fold fully into the handle, which may result in a “laceration hazard.”

Approximately 17,000 of these products have been sold in the United States at REI, hardware, cutlery and other stores and online at Leatherman and Amazon between July 2024 and March 2025. There have been no reports of injuries from the flaw.

This recall involves the Leatherman Charge Plus and Charge Plus TTi multi-tools. The Charge Plus multi-tools come in both black and stainless steel colors with a black MOLLE or black nylon sheath. The Charge Plus TTi multi-tools are stainless steel and have a black nylon sheath. Both have the brand name “Leatherman” etched on them.

If you believe you own either of these products, you should immediately stop using it and visit Leatherman’s recall page to determine if your multi-tool requires recall. If your item is affected, you will not be required to show proof of purchase and will receive a pre-paid shipping label to return it to Leatherman to be repaired free of charge.

All five models are built with MagnaCut steel, which was developed specifically for EDC blades and is known for its durability, corrosion-resistance and edge-retention. Machined G10 handles are made using fiberglass soaked in resin, which the brand says is both durable and provides better grip, while "jimping" – a process that cuts ridges – on the knifepoint spine also improves grip and handline control. Radius edges also help with a comfortable grip and give the knives an impressively clean look.

The lightest models in the range weigh less than four ounces (104g), or about the same as a deck of cards, and all models are fitted with a deep carry pocket clip that's adjustable for right or left-hand pockets.

"You happen to be on the same trail as me? I knew you were coming, and now we're here together. So, why don't I make you a tasty treat?" It's a simple sentiment from Canadian chef, restaurateur and star of The Bear Matty Matheson, who's teamed up with pizza oven brand Gozney to release the portable Tread in limited-edition orange.

Supposedly great pals with Gozney head Tom Gozney, Matheson said the idea came from just "two great minds mashed into one great thing." He hopes it will bring "the good times of high-temperature cooking to places you never thought possible".

The limited-edition oven has the same portable, durable and lightweight features found in the original Gozney Tread oven, which launched in early 2025. However, the bright orange finish helps to invoke a hint of Matty's personality.

Despite the name, camping coolers didn’t actually used to be cool – until the Yeti brand came along and turned the industry on its head with its sought-after cool boxes that are now the envy of every camper.

In the 19 years since Yeti was founded in 2006, it has easily surpassed its competitors in the field, and while we’re sure that branding played a big role in its success, we also can’t deny that the Yeti coolers we’ve tested are seriously tough, verging on bulletproof.

It’s no surprise that Yeti coolers are exceptionally high performing – the brand was born out of a need for serious protection against the blazing hot sun. Brothers Roy and Ryan Seiders are keen fishermen from Texas who needed something to protect their catch from the scorching heat.

Much like Tim Leatherman designed his own multi-tool to deal with gear issues in the field and John Burroughs engineered the first Therm-a-Rest camping mat to get a better night’s sleep in the mountains, the Seiders brothers took things into their own hands and came up with the now-legendary Tundra cooler.

The Tundra used what's called Rotomolded construction – a method that creates a seamless piece of plastic, eliminating weak points where heat could penetrate. In addition to three inches of insulation, the result was a seriously rugged and high-performing cooler.

Less than two decades later, Yeti now makes coolers of all sizes, from soft backpack-style to behemoth wheeled ice chambers. When you’re loading up the car for a night or two at camp and you want to keep all your food plus a few brews ice cold, Yeti recommends the cooler that started the whole story. Jetboil Flash 1.0: first impressions 

If you like to get the camping stove going so you can boil water while you pitch your tent and inflate your sleeping pad, the Jetboil is not for you. This camping stove cook system gets water boiling so fast you'll barely have time to find the tea bags, but that's old news.

The new and much-improved Jetboil 1.0 has taken all the things that made its Jetboil Flash predecessor great – blistering boil time of under two minutes, fuel efficiency and ease-of-use – and simply made it all better. We've no doubt the complaints department at Jetboil's parent company Johnson Outdoors got tired of people writing in to say the ignition switch at had failed or they'd burnt their fingers trying to detach the pot, so they did something about it.

The biggest upgrade on the Jetboil 1.0 is the turn-and-click ignition, which works just like your stove at home. Just attach the pot to the stove, turn the switch to the left, and when it clicks, the stove comes roaring to life. You can turn the heat down by turning the dial clockwise.

Other upgrades are what the brand calls the new grip zone – essentially a silicone grip at the base of the stove that makes it easy to handle safely when hot. We love that it's bright orange so you always know exactly where to place your hands.

Finally, the improved pot-to-burner connection means you can just place the stove on the ground (or the stabilizing feet) light it, then easily place the pot on top and turn it once to click it into place. You're never in any doubt that you've set it up correctly.

Like the original, the whole package is quite large, but it makes up for its bulk with a light weight, and it all packs neatly inside itself. It's still got the heat indicator on the sleeve that changes color to let you know your water is boiling, it's still extremely fuel efficient and it's still the same price. So is it worth the hefty price tag? Absolutely. Read on to find out why.

JetBoil Flash 1.0: in the field 

The Jetboil has been the gold standard for camping stoves for a while, and pretty much the only complaint it ever got was that the ignition switch would fail. This just meant that people had to use a lighter, which isn't the end of the world since you should really carry one on any camping trip, but for the price of this piece of gear, you do want it to work properly, for a long time.

So when Jetboil reached out to say that they'd finally fixed this flaw, I jumped at the chance to take this up a mountain and use it to cook up noodles, coffee and hot chocolate on a recent backpacking adventure.

Here’s how it performed:

Design and features

The design of the 1.0 is in most ways similar to the original Jetboil, but in case you’ve never seen it, it’s a burner that more or less fits in the palm of your hand that screws into a gas canister. It comes with optional fold-out plastic legs that clip into the canister, and then a one-liter pot sits on top and clicks into place. It’s important to note that you’ll buy the stove and pot as an integrated system, and the stove won’t work with just any pot.

What makes Jetboil a masterpiece in engineering is the “FluxRing” on the bottom of the pot, which acts as a conducting collar that concentrates nearly all of the heat produced by the burner upwards, allowing very little to escape out of the sides. As well as cutting down on the time for the water to boil, this heat-harnessing collar is also excellent for keeping fuel consumption to a minimum. That means your water boils faster, and you spend less money on fuel. It’s genius.

So, focusing on what’s new, this 1.0 has a click and turn ignition switch, and all that’s required is a simple turn to the left to fire it up. From there, you can turn the ignition switch back towards 12 o’clock to reduce the power if you want to. The new pot-to-burner connection has an added dimple and means you can just sit the pot on top of the (lit) stove with one hand, hold the (also new) orange grip zone on the stove with the other hand and easily click the two together.

The pot still has the sleeve with handle, which is a little bigger than the original, that makes it easy and safe to handle when hot, a lid to keep the contents hot for longer, and the heat indicator that turns orange when water is boiling.

It comes with a measuring cup, which you can certainly leave at home, but may be useful for preparing meals and helps protect the bottom of the pot in transit, which is important because that’s where that magic collar is.

Weight and packability

The Jetboil isn’t the lightest or most packable stove on the market, especially when I compare it to something like my tiny Alpkit Kraku, but for the size, it’s surprisingly light. The whole kit packs inside the pot, so the entire cylindrical package actually ends up being about the size of a one-liter Nalgene, making it not crazy at all to bring this backpacking.

I easily fit it inside my Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor backpack along with my tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag, but it could also be secured to the outside of your pack or might fit in a side pocket if you were short on space. Also, you can pack things inside it to make up for the size.

Ease of use and performance

The Jetboil 1.0 comes with an easy-to-follow instruction guide, and I was wise enough to bring it along for my first backpacking trip, but honestly, I don’t think I really needed it.

It’s simple enough to thread the stove into the gas canister if you’ve ever had a backpacking stove, and I stabilized it on its feet, even though on flat ground and without wind, it probably wasn’t necessary.

Then I turned the ignition switch, and at about seven o’clock, it clicked and the stove roared to life, pretty much like a jet engine. To my delight, 90 seconds later the water was bubbling away. I’d only caution that you make sure you’ve tied your hair back before you light it.

The Jetboil 1.0 is tall, and I’ve not had to test it out in especially windy conditions, but while it doesn’t look aerodynamic, it does behave in a very stable fashion. As long as you find a good, clear and flat area and stay close by, I can’t see why you’d have any issues with stability.

Like any camping stove, the Jetboil 1.0 has one job, and that’s to boil water, and it does it better and faster than any other stove on the market.

Durability and value

One thing I really like about the Jetboil is its excellent build, and compared to my Kraku it’s definitely much more robust. Obviously, the problem with the original model was the ignition switch breaking, and I haven’t had it long enough to say that’s been solved, but the company seems confident, and I hope they’re right because if so, it’s very difficult to gripe about this stove.

Is it pricey? Undoubtedly. Can you find better? Not on this planet.

Yeti fans usually have nothing but praise to sing for the Austin-based cooler brand, but there is one small detail that many think is lacking on the popular Roadie 24 cooler – the lack of a drain plug.

The 24 was the smallest cooler in the portable Roadie lineup until the awesome Roadie 15 came along last year and stole that thunder. A few years ago, Yeti eliminated the drain plug from the 24 – a feature that remained present on the larger Roadie 48 and Roadie 60 – saying that it helped with ice retention.

The assumption was that the cooler, which with a 33-can capacity is designed for day trips and not long weekends, is small enough that you can just tip excess water out of it as the ice melts. Not all campers agree, however.

"My biggest complaint is the lack of a drain plug which makes it difficult to drain the water out from melted ice while the cooler still have items in it," writes one (slightly) unhappy camper of the cooler, which is tall enough to fit a bottle of wine upright and weighs over 13lbs. Another notes that as an elderly person, it's not a practical design.

Don't get us wrong, the Roadie 24 has proved very popular, with an excellent 4.6-star rating among Yeti customers, but it seems as though the brand couldn't help but notice that the only reviews that knock a star off note the lack of a drain plug.

Making matters worse, when the smaller Roadie 15 came along with a BestDam drain plug, Reddit fans were up in arms.

"Logic Yeti, where is it?" writes one Yeti fan, while another shared a screenshot of a message from the brand saying there were no plans to change the design.

Well, that was eight months ago, and now it seems Yeti has relented. The Roadie 24 is available now to Yeti members, and it also boasts the addition of the same uber comfortable DoubleDuty Strap that makes the 15 so easy to haul.

Eating hot oatmeal out of your Yeti Rambler Mug at camp isn't exactly the worst thing in the world, but let's face it, scraping the last few bites out of the corners with your spork isn't the easiest, nor is the temporary lack of a cup for your coffee. That's why the camping brand has launched its latest solution to enjoying and transporting food at camp – nesting, insulated bowls.

Yeti's Rambler Insulated Bowl set is a three-piece affair that consists of different-sized bowls that nest one inside of the other when empty, and stack with the lids on when they're full.

Made using the same stainless steel double-wall vacuum insulation we've come to know and depend upon in Yeti products like the Rambler Water Bottle, the bowls are designed to help keep hot food hot and cold food cold. The robust construction also means you don't have to worry about rust and can toss them in the dishwasher when you get home without having to worry about them degrading.

Each bowl comes with a sturdy, clear plastic press-down lid that lets you see what's inside and keeps the internal temperature in check – though the brand does warn that once the lid is off, the wide opening means your hot food will cool quicker than your coffee in the Rambler 10oz Tumbler, so don't delay in chowing down. We can't say without testing them first that they're totally leakproof, but they'll certainly reduce spillages and cleanup at camp.

The smallest bowl is 1qt (30oz), which in more relatable terms means it holds four cups of food and is perfect for eating your mac n cheese directly out of. The next size up has the double the capacity and is great for a side serving or rice or pasta, and the biggest bowl is a whopping 4.5qts (18 cups) and could be used for marinating meat or mixing up a salad to share, if that's your thing.

You can purchase the bowls individually or as a set since they nest neatly inside each other for transport and storage when you remove the lids. Best of all, the brand lets you mix and match your color scheme, so at checkout you can choose a different color for each bowl. The new Coleman Pro line of hard and soft-sided coolers is the first from the legacy brand that appears to be a truly tough coolbox that will keep your food and drinks cold for days, not hours. Like its Yeti rival, it boasts heavy-duty latches (made of steel), non-slip feet for when it's riding around in the back of the truck or on deck, and an easy drain system. It even comes in an attractive Blue Sky colorway that we can't help noticing looks nearly identical to Yeti's Big Sky Blue.

At 19lbs (8.6kg), it's not light, but it's 5lbs lighter than the Tundra. The other main difference we can see is the price. While the Coleman Pro certainly isn't as cheap as your standard Coleman Classic Series cooler, at $199.99 it's much more affordable than the premium-priced Tundra to the tune of $125.

If you're looking for something even bigger for long weekends in the backcountry, the Coleman Pro 55 claims it keeps ice in check for up to five days. Also in the Pro lineup is a 25qt hard cooler with carry strap that the brand says keeps ice up to three days and holds 36 cans that looks like a more affordable – and spacious – answer to the Yeti Roadie 15.

If you're seeking something more toteable like Yeti's Hopper Flip 12, which comes with an eye-watering $250 price tag, there's the Coleman Pro 16-Can Premium Soft Cooler Lunchbox that's just $59.99.

Whether the new line is a worthy opponent to Yeti's bulletproof boxes, we won't know until we get our hands on one, but it's clear the Chicago brand is wading in on premium cooler territory, and you're about to have even more options for keeping food and drinks properly cold at camp.

Yeti Roadie 15 Hard Cooler: first impressions 

Just because you're looking for a small cooler doesn't necessarily mean you're looking for something light and cheap, and the Yeti Roadie 15 is as bulletproof as any of its designs, but compact. Built for days at the beach and short camping trips (without the family), this camping cooler really checks off nearly every box.

Yeti's claim is that it holds 22 cans (only) or 16lbs of ice, but since you're likely to want both of those things, realistically you're probably looking at about 15 or 16 cans plus ice. You can lie wine bottles down and fit three in easily, and if it's food you want to keep cold, there's plenty of space in this sensibly-dimensioned cooler.

In our lab tests, we found the Permafrost insulation kept things reasonably icy for about 48 hours, but obviously timing varies depending on how and where you're using it. Of course, it also keeps hot food hot, and it's easy to drain when the ice starts melting thanks to the Bestdam drain plug.

A cooler of this size typically has carry handles, and while this one does have what Yeti calls "Liftgrip" handles – meaning indentations where you can slide your fingers – what's unusual and frankly genius is that it comes with a very robust and comfortable carrying strap. The cooler is just small enough that you can comfortably cart it over one shoulder as long as you're not going too far, and you'll have your hands free.

This cooler latches shut and keeps the heat out, and the mechanisms are easy to operate single-handedly if you're juggling a cold drink at the same time. They're not bear-proof, but Yeti does sell a tie-down kit and a security cable lock separately. The brand also warns that this cooler isn't leakproof, which means if it ends up upside down there may be spillage.

However, if you're planning on loading this up in the back of your truck or onto a boat, rubber grips at the bottom prevent it from sliding away, and if you're just packing it in the back of a car, it fits neatly into any trunk and between seats, plus it makes a fairly comfortable seat itself. When you get home, it's easy enough to clean with a wipe of soapy water.

It's heavier than your average small cooler but built to be bulletproof and look, you don't need us to tell you it's expensive. But if you want a really classy, high performing smaller cooler? This is it.

Yeti Roadie 15 Hard Cooler: in the field 

I got this cooler just as the warm weather dissipated last year, but thanks to some fun family trips I've still been able to get some use out of it for picnics and outdoor gatherings over the past six months.

Here’s how it performed:

Construction and design

Yeti is the gold standard when it comes to camping coolers and like any other from the Austin brand, this one is built to basically withstand everything but a bullet (I haven't tried shooting it, it's far too nice for that).

The construction is what Yeti calls Rocksolid and that's exactly how it feels. Yes, it's heavier than similarly-sized coolers from other brands, but if you've ever owned a cheaper cooler, you'll feel the difference in the overall build. One of the first things to go with cheaper coolers is, of course, the hinges and locking mechanisms, and while I've only had this for months and not years, I have great confidence in both the interlocking two-pin hinge design and the Quicklatch closures. Even the carry strap is super robust.

As for design, it's pretty perfect. It's the smallest hard cooler Yeti makes, so it's really intended for days out or maybe an overnight car camping trip if there's just one or two of you. I've found it holds enough food for a night away, plus a few drinks, or enough drinks for a party, and the interior space can sensibly fit wine b0ttles lying down, stacked cans or tupperwares of food.

I'm able to open and latch it with one hand without any struggling (which of course means a bear could too, but I don't live in bear country anymore) and it's easy to grab with both hands when I'm hauling it out of the trunk.

Insulation and performance

probablyIf you're investing a lot of money in a Yeti cooler, you probbaly have one question and one question only: how long does it keep food cold? Or hot for that matter?

Sensibly, Yeti doesn't specify this on its website, which makes sense, since how long it will keep ice frozen all depends on what's inside it, how hot it is outside and how frequently you open it. To try and help you with this question, I did an unofficial lab test where I filled it with six bottles of water and two bags of ice. I kept it indoors at room temperature and checked it every few hours. The ice lasted about 48 hours under these conditions. Needless to say, if it were outside on a hot summer camping trip, I might expect that time to be cut down substantially, but I still think you can rely on 24 hours of cold food from it, and since it's a small cooler, I think that's more than adequate.

As for keeping food hot, I haven't tried that yet, but one of these days I'll chuck a roast beef in there as an experiment and let you know.

Portability

Since Yetis are a little heavier, I was a bit worried about carting this thing around, and while it's not exactly built for a long trek, I must say I'm enormously impressed by how well the paddedcarry strap works. It really is as comfortable as Yeti claims and for me, makes it easier to haul it up and down stairs and across the park.

There are also two grip handles, which are basically indents for your fingers (which means they'll never break off) that make it easy to lift in and out of the car.

Speaking of the car, the dimensions of this cooler make it really packable. I drive a small Toyota Yaris but on a family vacation to the Galloway Forest where we wanted to bring some groceries, it easily fit in the trunk along with suitcases and other bags. It's also small enough to slide in between seats.

Value

It's a Yeti. So yes, it's expensive. Do you need to pay $200 for a small cooler? of course not. But if you want one that will last a lifetime, or you just love the brand, you'll find this to deliver on all its promises.

Yeti Roadie 15 hard cooler: the bottom line 

The Yeti Roadie 15 takes everything that makes Yeti coolers great and delivers it in a smaller package, which is ideal for day trips, picnics and road trips. If you don't already know about it, the Jetboil Flash famously takes seconds to set up and brings water to a boil in around 90 seconds, which means you can get that camping meal or hot cup of coffee on the go without delay. Most importantly, the 1.0L features a reengineered ignition system. Leading camping cooler brand Igloo has launched a massive recall of its coolers due to a design flaw that might result in serious finger injury.

According to an alert by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Texas brand has recalled over a million coolers after discovering the flaw. The recalled coolers have a tow handle that can pinch the user's fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazards.

Approximately 1,060,000 of these coolers have been sold in the United States between January 2019 and January 2025. An additional 47,000 were sold in Canada and another 23,000 in Mexico. There have been 12 reports of fingertip injuries, including fingertip amputations, bone fractures, and lacerations.

This recall involves Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers manufactured prior to January 2024. If you own one of these coolers, you can check the bottom where the manufacturing date will be imprinted in a circular pattern with an arrow pointing to the month of manufacture and the last two digits of the year imprinted inside the circle.

The recalled coolers have a tow handle and the word “IGLOO” is printed on the side. The coolers were sold in multiple color combinations, and the model number is located on labels affixed to the bottom of the cooler. You can check a full list of recalled models at the USCPSC website.

Fancy cooking up a delicious stone-baked pizza on your next backcountry camp? Well now you can, as long as you don't mind more than a little extra weight.

The Gozney Tread pizza oven, available from March 11, is designed for outdoor use, featuring integrated carry handles and a gas-powered fuelling system. However, clocking in at 29.8lb / 13.5kg, it's probably not going to be part of your ultralight kit.

The Tread is significantly lighter than Gozney's other ovens, which weigh upwards of 52lb / 24kg, and 10lb lighter than the Ooni Kari 12 portable pizza oven (40.5lb / 18.4kg). So its claim to be the most portable pizza oven on the market is a fair one.

But isn't really in the same bracket as standard lightweight camping stoves, which usually tip the scales between 3.5oz / 100g and 10lb / 4.5kg.

If you want to take the Tread to the back of beyond you may also want to add on the optional Venture stand, which was built for uneven outdoor terrain, featuring four grippy and easily adjustable stand legs. Outdoor retailer REI has announced plans to expand its propane cylinder exchange program after testing it in several stores in California. The move comes after California banned single-use canisters for camping.

The company has been testing the program for the past year and a half at four of its Bay Area stores – San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Sunnyvale and Dublin – and now intends to launch it in some 50 stores nationwide, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Under the program, you can purchase a refillable propane canister for your camping stove for $22 which comes full. When it's empty, you can take it back and exchange it for another full one for just $10, much like you do at the grocery store for your barbeque grill.

In September, the state announced a ban on disposable propane cylinders under new measures designed to protect the local environment. Approximately, 40 - 60 million small single-use propane cylinders are sold in the US each year for use with grills and portable stoves, but they have been linked to wildfires, and are said to create a huge amount of waste for the state.

The law isn't set to go into effect until January 2028, and REI says it will continue the sale of single-use cylinders until then, but the new program is intended to start to change consumer behavior.

The retailer hasn't yet announced which locations will be adopting the program next, but given that only 31 of its 190 stores are in California, it's clear that it will be available to campers in other states.

Many retailers including Walmart and Home Depot will refill 1 lb canisters for barbeque grills, but the REI program applies to smaller canisters used for backpacking stoves. If you're nowhere near an REI, it's always worth walking into your local outdoor store to ask if they can help you.

Propane stoves like the Jetboil Flash are certainly convenient for backpacking, but for car camping and backyard fun you can always go propane-free with the likes of the Petromax stainless steel Fire Kettle or a Solo Stove Lite.

Forty-year-old Max Armstrong was camping with friends last month when he gave himself a small burn while removing a hot pan from the campfire.

He didn't think much of it, but within a month he was undergoing a double below-knee amputation.

“I just was transferring the skillet from the campfire to the table and burnt a portion of my thumb in the process,” he told People. "It was a little burn. I didn't think anything of it at the time."

Within two days he noticed a swelling in one of his ankles, but dismissed it as being caused by a minor twist getting out of his campervan.

But the burn didn't heal, and he developed other symptoms – feverishness and the color of his foot changed.

In hospital, the doctors confirmed his condition as sepsis, revealing that Strep A bacteria (passed from person to person) had got into the burn before he had cleaned and bandaged it.

The had little choice but to induce him into a life-saving coma while they treated him.

"Physicians were not hopeful that Max would make it, but after six days he pulled through and was disconnected from his ventilator," his GoFundMe page reveals.

Unfortunately for Max the tissue in his feet began to die. The condition, known as necrosis, then started to spread up his legs.

On December 23 last year he underwent surgery to remove both legs from below the knees, which was successful in halting the spread of necrosis.

Max is a seasoned hiker, having previously spent 151 days walking from Mexico to Canada. Although now he needs modifications to his home and car to go about his day-to-day business, it hasn't stopped him dreaming of his next adventure out on the trails.

“There's no question in my mind that I will be hiking in the mountains by this time next year,” he told People. "Until then, I dream most about just hiking around my house with my dogs – just going on a long walk.

How to treat a burn in the wild

Making campfires and cooking are hazardous activities that can result in serious burns.

Burns can look like red or peeling skin, blisters, swelling, white or charred skin.

If you're unlucky enough to get burnt by hot cooking equipment or flames, or scalded by boiling liquids, be sure to address the burn immediately.

Some serious burns cause damage to tissue and nerves, so take action even if you're not in pain.

• Cool minor burns with clean cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes if possible.
•  If you don't have access to streaming water, hopefully you have burn gel or dressings in your first aid kit.

Petromax Stove Cup: first impressions

A German brand that has been making both innovative and traditional camping kit for over a century, Petromax equipment is typically classy and functional, so I was looking forward to testing out the Petromax Stove Cup.

This is a multipurpose product, in that it can be used like a standard camping mug (albeit a bloody big one, but no complaints from me in that department) or as a flame-fired kettle for boiling water.

Really, though, it’s both of those things and more – it’s a fully fledged camping stove, and it can be used for heating or cooking food from scratch, using easily sourced natural fuel.

Petromax Stove Cup: design and materials

The primary product here is the generously proportioned 750ml mug, made from stainless steel, with a smart brushed finish. The Stove Cup has measurements (in milliliters and fluid ounces) down the side, and a split handle, also made from metal, which splays and sits snug to the side of the mug during storage and when you’re carrying it in your hiking backpack. There is a stainless steel lid (with a wonderfully Teutonic-looking insignia engraved on top), the main purpose of which is to speed up boiling and cooking times when the system is being used as a stove, and to keep the contents warm once they’ve been heated.

The product comes with a steel stove section, sized so it can be tucked away inside the massive mug during storage and transportation. It’s a simple biomass-burning stove, designed to funnel heat towards the bottom of the mug, which sits neatly on top of this hob unit.

The two-part system comes with a neat carry sack which keeps everything contained, and protects the rest of your camping kit from getting soot and fire odors all over it.

Petromax Stove Cup: on the trails

I’ve been using the Petromax Stove Cup while camping, hiking and road tripping for the last few months. Sometimes I simply use the cup as a big tea mug, perfect for a large brew first thing in the morning, having boiled the water via some other quick-and-easy method. However, if you have the time and inclination (which I usually do while camping, when other distractions have been left behind) using the stove is a fun and satisfying way to brew-up or even to cook a meal.

The beauty of this system is that you are almost always surrounded by the fuel required to get it cranking: leaves and dry grass for tinder, then twigs, bits of bark, small sticks, pine cones and so on. Unlike with gas stoves, it’s virtually impossible to run out of fuel. The process is easy: you simply set a small fire and contain it in the hob unit, which funnels the heat towards the bottom of the cup. There are various vents in the stove, for optimum airflow (a prerequisite of a good cooking fire) and there’s a wider hole for adding fuel.

The stove takes a little while to get going properly – as all biomass-burning hobs do – and you do, of course, need to keep feeding the flames, which burn through fuel at a surprisingly fast rate once the system is properly raring. Boil times and heat output obviously vary according to a range of factors, and this style of stove can never compete with a gas-fuelled product when it comes to getting a brew made quickly, but it’s a far more immersive experience.

Realistically, you’re looking at between 10 and 15 minutes to boil around 500ml of water from cold, but that’s once the stove has already got a base of embers. A tin of soup can be well heated within 7 or 8 minutes.

When it comes to cooking on the Stove Cup, the food (and even hot drinks made with water boiled above the flames) tends to take on a smokey taste and aroma, which I actually really enjoy (it’s pleasant, and it makes me feel like I’m properly camping).

It’s quite a large setup to pack and carry around in a hiking backpack, but it’s extremely light (no need to lug heavy liquid propane gas canisters around), and there’s plenty of space inside to stash other items – such as teabags and coffee (it’s best to stick to cooking and food items rather than clothes when you’re maximizing this storage space, unless you enjoy smelling like a bonfire).

The downsides to this system are quite self-evident: although you’re typically surrounded by natural fuel, it can be wet and soggy and almost impossible to get lit. The answer to this is to use the Petromax Stove Cup when conditions are dry, but we can all get caught out by the weather sometimes. If you’re completely reliant on this system for hot sustenance, you’re either going to have to ride your luck, or carry some firelighters and collect dry fuel when you see it.

The other slight annoyance is that, once it has been used as a stove, both the hob element and the bottom of the mug will be mucky and sooty. This is where the carry bag comes in super handy, but I have been very impressed how easy the mug is to clean, inside and out (the quality of the stainless steel seems excellent).

You need to be careful not to burn your lips if you’re drinking directly from the main mug if you’ve just been using it to heat up a drink, but the metal cools down relatively quickly.

Caution is also required when disposing of the hot embers left over after you’ve finished brewing up or cooking. Always ensure you deal with them responsibly, and factor in the possibility that you might not be able to use this stove at all in some places and in certain conditions (in times of extreme heat and wind). It should go without saying (but I’ll write it regardless) that you should never use this open-flame cooking system too close to your tent, and it’s absolutely not a stove for cooking in a vestibule.

A couple of years ago, I was given the arduous task of testing camping coffee makers for Advnture. Off I went into the wild with my favorite espresso grind and camping mug and when I emerged, the AeroPress was the clear winner.
