Trail, or Trail Outdoor Leisure, to give it its full, less-catchy title, is a relatively new entrant to the British camping scene, having been founded in 2017. Based on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in Southwest England, it crafts the full gamut of camping gear, from tents through to camping kitchens, as well as inflatable SUPs.

The brand highlights quality, affordability and industry knowledge as its selling points. A look at its products reveals some great-value options, as well as mid-range gear. If you’re a Brit looking to purchase decent camping kit without massive price tags, this brand appears to be a good choice.

I was new to Trail when I set out to test several of its products, including its Falcon Padded Camping Chair, which comes as part of a two-piece set, ideal for camping couples or trips with mates. I loaded the car, invited another two generations of my family along and headed for North Wales’ Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park to test it out.

First impressions

When I liberated the Falcon from its carry bag and opened it up, the first thing that struck me was the high backrest. A veritable throne! With its wide arm rests and padded back support, it was immediately inviting. First sit revealed a very comfortable chair indeed.

The curved apex of the backrest is more for show than support however, as it sits above the steel frame and simply folds over if any weight is applied to it. So, it’s not a chair you can rest your head back into, unless you want neck ache. Nevertheless, the height of the frame means that the upper back is well supported, making it a comfortable place to sit and read, enjoy a brew or simply take in the views.

The chair isn't particularly spectacular to look at. It has a standard camping chair design and aesthetic, like the folding-frame options that fly off the supermarket shelves in the lead up to Glastonbury festival. However, comparing it to a bargain bucket chair is a little unfair, as it’s solid quality and a closer inspection reveals strong components.

Features

As with many such camping chairs, the Falcon comprises a padded fabric seat that arcs up into a backrest, with twin arm rests and a folding frame beneath. The right arm rest has a can-sized cup holder for beers or a flask, which will suit festival goers and family campers down to a T – or a tea, as it may be. The holder is lightly insulated and made from a black fabric, so provides a little extra insulation for both cold and warm drinks. Hanging down from the right side of the seat is a large compartment for storing a book or magazine. A nice touch.

The main fabric is a hardwearing 600-denier polyester that’s treated with a water-resistant PVC coating. It’s not exactly soft against the skin but then I wouldn’t describe it as rough either. The interior padding is held in rectangular baffles and is subtle but effective. It’s obviously not as plush as your armchair at home but it’s cozier than most lightweight camping chairs.

It folds down courtesy of its durable tubular steel frame, which is powder-coated to shield against wear and rust. It’s scissor-style legs fold inwards, creating a relatively compact unit when packed down.

In storage, it stretches to 38.5in (98cm), making it quite long, perhaps due to its high backrest. It’ll fit lengthways in a car’s trunk or along the footwell in the back, but it’s perhaps still a little longer than I’d have liked. The chairs come with their own carry bags that have a rudimentary carry strap and drawstring closure.

On the campsite

I’ve been testing the Falcon throughout the summer, on a beach break to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and a car camping trip to Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park.

The headlines are that it’s a perfectly good, comfortable chair that’s about as fancy as you’d expect considering its price point. The original price of the Falcon 2-piece set was £99.99 but it’s currently available at £49.99 on Trail’s website. That’s just £25 per chair, making the set extremely good value. Sure, there are much lighter options on the market and there are also more luxurious options too, but these are markedly more expensive.

It's very easy to fold away when not in use and I was also able to adjust the height of the arm rests by sliding them up and down the side steel supports. The way the slider stays in place during use is a clever design touch, maintaining your desired height.

It took me a while to notice I had a handy side storage space for stashing items such as a magazine or book. As someone who likes to kick back and lose myself in a novel while on vacation, I found it a nice touch.

I can happily report that I made full use of the insulated cup holder too, while enjoying a craft beer or two with my father. This tended to be in the evening, when temps were beginning to drop, so I can’t totally put it down to the holder’s insulation that my brew remained relatively chilled as I set about draining cans sup by sup.

When the Nemo Stargaze camping chair first came out in 2018, it was more or less an overnight hit among campers who loved the first-ever swinging and reclining camping chair design. Who could blame them? We didn't think there was much to improve upon, but the New Hampshire brand has other ideas.

The Stargaze EVO-X has a 300lb (136kg) capacity and weighs 13lbs 12oz (6.2kg), so it's not as light as something like the Helinox Chair One, but it's also less minimalist.

Helinox Chair One (re): first impressions

When South Korean brand Helinox released the original Chair One in 2012, their approach to a lightweight and packable camping chair made from the same materials used in backpacking tents transformed the camping scene.

Since then, a lot of brands have taken a leaf out of Helinox’s book and launched similarly light and well-designed models, but fortunately for Helinox, the brand has maintained its reputation as the OG and Chair One remains a cult favorite. Rather than trying to stay ahead of the competition with more and more new models, for 2025, the brand has decided to go back to one of its original designs and give it a makeover.

The Helinox Chair One (re) looks similar to the original, but is engineered with a secondary tension line, which the brand is calling ‘ReTension Design’. Basically, it does a better job of distributing your weight around the frame to improve comfort (but it’s still got a tremendously high load capacity for such a small chair).

Helinox has also increased the height of the chair, which will come as a welcome upgrade to anyone who has sat down in the earlier version and discovered just how low to the ground they are. It’s now about 2.5in taller, and that does make a difference for stretching out at camp. It will still be tricky for some people to stand up out of, so it’s worth testing it out before you commit.

The revised edition is also 2.5in wider than before, which makes it more comfortable for more people, and despite the increase in size, Helinox says it's reduced the waste generated in the manufacturing process by 30%. It's also added a gear pocket for your headlamp or phone, and used a 300-denier recycled polyester (still bluesign-certified), which is 50 percent lighter than the fabric used in the original Chair One.

It is, of course, a little heavier than the original, but not enough to make a difference, and packs away into a handy carry case that can be attached to a backpack. It’s also quite a bit pricier for all the upgrades it’s received, and the feet will still sink into muddy ground (they do sell a separate ground sheet for that) but overall it’s a fantastic series of upgrades to a popular but not quite perfect chair.

Helinox Chair One (re): first impressions

The first time I tested out a Helinox chair was actually at an outdoor tradeshow a few years ago. The folks from Helinox had the Chair Zero out for testing, and despite being quite a small woman, I eyed it dubiously. 'No way my hips will fit in that,' I thought to myself. To my surprise, I did fit, and it was actually very comfortable.

Fast forward to this spring, and when I heard the Chair One, which is one of Helinox’s lightweight (but not ultralight) chairs, had been updated, I was eager to take it out on test. So myself, my partner and his 9-year-old set off on a short backpacking trip to the top of a nearby mountain so we could fight over the only seat for 24 hours, with a lovely view.

Here’s how it performed:

Weight and packability

When I received the Helinox Chair One (re), I couldn’t quite believe how small and light it is. It comes neatly packed inside a carrying case that has an easy-open U-shaped zip and attachment points on each end.

My partner and I split all the camping gear for three between the two of us, so I had one tent, two sleeping bags, a sleeping pad, my Jetboil Flash 1.0 and some food and clothes inside my Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor pack.

With all of that, there wasn’t easily room for the chair too, but that was no issue, thanks to various straps and attachment points on the carrying case, I quickly strapped it onto my backpack. At just over 2lb (1kg), it’s about the weight of a bag of sugar and I didn’t notice the added weight at all for our hike in.

Performance and comfort

Like its predecessor, this is a smartly designed piece of equipment. It comes in two pieces: the aluminium frame which clicks together just like tent poles do, and the polyester seat.

Without any instructions, it was really easy for me to see how to set up the frame, then attach the seat via four connection points (these are just pockets where the poles from the frame insert). The fourth connection takes a little wrestling, a bit like getting the fourth corner of a slightly-too-tight bed sheet on the mattress, but it’s nothing I couldn’t handle.

Set up takes mere seconds, then I plopped down and was instantly pleased to discover how comfortable it is. The added height and weight really do make a big difference, but I am only 5’4” tall, so for good measure I let my 6ft tall partner have a go and he was equally impressed. It’s designed so you can stretch out or sit upright and stay that way comfortably until your GPS watch buzzes you and tells you that you’ve been sitting for too long.

Durability and value

This is easily the sturdiest camping chair I’ve ever owned, and I can see it lasting me the rest of my camping days as the design sidesteps a lot of the common wear-and-tear spots in more budget-friendly chairs. As long as you don’t beat it up too much, the frame joints are designed not to break the way they do on cheaper chairs, and I even have faith that the polyester won’t easily fray at the connection sites.

As for value, it's quite a pricey chair, and more expensive than the original, but it’s nowhere near as expensive as something like the Nemo Stargaze. I think it’s a clear upgrade on the original, and if you want something extremely comfortable that you can take backpacking as well as car camping, I can’t imagine you’ll get more for your money elsewhere (though other brands are coming for this design).

Meet the reviewer

Sitpack Campster II: first impressions

Produced by a boutique Danish outdoor brand, the Sitpack Campster II is the second iteration of the Campster camping chair, which was initially released with three legs. Extensively revised after listening to feedback from the camping community (Sitpack say), the second coming of this cool camping chair has four legs, sits slightly lower to the ground than the original (enhancing the stability) and is much easier and more intuitive to assemble.

You can also buy various accessories to pimp the Campster II, including a groundsheet – which is intended to spread the load and prevent the feet of the chair sinking into sand (or other soft surfaces) – and a quilted seat warmer to keep your bum from going numb when cool breezes blow though the mostly mesh sides.

These feel like quite specific and substantial add-on elements that some people may be happy to fork out extra cash for if they feel they need them. But I must admit, if I were paying good money for a premium camping pew (and this is no cheap seat), I would expect the insulated bottle holder to come as part of the package – not least because, owing to the semi-bucket design of the chair, there are no arm-rests to host a cup-holder.

That small grumble aside, I liked the look and style of the Campster II from the moment I poured it out of its carry bag and first put it together. It’s great having a mid-sized chair that packs away into a small carry pack, and – even when assembled – doesn’t take up too much room in the living space of a family tent (for example), but which remains sturdy and comfortable enough to offer proper support. The build quality and materials also point to a piece of kit that will last significantly longer than cheapo chairs, so it shouldn’t end up as landfill after a few seasons.

In order to assess its performance next to the best camping chairs on the market, however, I took it away camping and to various other outdoor shindigs at the beach and in parks, fields and forests, to see how well it compares when it comes to parking my posterior.

Sitpack Campster II: design and materials

Available in two colors (black or a rather flamboyant orange) the Campster II is a one-piece chair, with the legs and frame attached to the fabric of the seat, so there’s no danger of losing a part when you’re rushing around packing up at the end of an alfresco adventure. 

The frame of the chair is made from aircraft aluminum, and it boasts powder-coated legs and anodized top tubes. It’s possible to replace the plastic “shoes” on the four feet with luminous versions, if you so desire (perhaps for easy identification in festival or other group scenarios). 

Once liberated from the carry pack, the legs splay into position nice and easily. The upper frame is formed by four telescopic poles, which can be pulled into position in seconds. The front poles have two sections, while the back pair are higher, and have three sections – each one pops into place with a click as the sprung button meets the corresponding hole. The final section of the back poles can be quite stiff to pull into place the first few times you assemble the chair, but this becomes easier with repeated use.

The main body of the chair is made from synthetic material, and the back panel and sides are mostly mesh, in order to allow airflow to reach your body on sticky hot days (thus avoiding sweaty derriere dramas). If you’re likely to be camping or sitting out in cold conditions, it’s worth investing in the aforementioned quilted seat warmer to keep breezes at bay – although that is a significant investment ($49 (US) / £40 (UK) / €47 (EU)).

As I’ve already bemoaned, there’s no cup holder – but there are a couple of large mesh pockets on this chair, one on either side, for stashing snacks, sunglasses, books, phone, tablet, whatever. There’s also an S-shaped carabiner that clips on to loops above either of the front legs, onto which you can use to hook a water bottle (if the handle has a hoop on it) or to attach the insulated bottle holder offered by Sitpack ($10 (US) / £9 (UK) / €10 (EU)).

While these extras are a little pricey (in my opinion), it’s worth noting that the bag the Campster comes with is robust and well designed, with sturdy material loops at either end, thick plastic hooks on either end of the carry strap, and a zip running the full length of the bag. Unlike the flaky sacks that come with cheap camping chairs, this one should last the distance.

Sitpack Campster II: on the trails

While it’s still too heavy to take full-on hiking or bikepacking adventures (unlike the Helinox Chair Zero, it’s not intended for use during lightweight activities), I really like the packed-down dimensions of the Sitpack Campster II, which is very easy to stash in a vehicle of any size when you’re going car camping, or to throw in the bottom of a canoe. 

About the size and weight of a 2L bottle of water, it’s small enough to keep in the boot of a car all the time, for those just-in-case moments when you pause to admire a view or have a brew and you need a pew. And it’s also light and compact enough to sling over your shoulder if you’re simply strolling to the beach or a picnic spot from a car park, even if you need to walk a fair distance to reach your destination.

It really is very quick and easy to assemble (once those top sections have become a bit looser), although you do need to make sure that all four telescopic poles are fully extended (with the relevant popper poking through the correct hole) because otherwise the seat material won’t be properly tensioned, and you could do yourself an injury by plonking your posterior down on the pointy pyramidical top of the base (you only ever do this once – I can attest to that).

The angle of the chair is nice and relaxed, but not so laidback that you can’t perform campsite tasks such as feeding the fire or boiling some water on a camping stove. The low center of gravity makes it stable, but it’s not difficult to get up out of the seat. It is, perhaps, a little on the low side for sitting and eating at some camping tables, but the Campster II feels like it’s intended more for relaxing in, rather than being part of an alfresco dining set. It’s absolutely perfect for enjoying a drink around the fire, or leaning back and staring at the stars.

And, once you’re finished with it, the Campster II is quick and uncomplicated to disassemble and pack away in the bag – just depress the pop-up buttons, slide the sections into once another and fold it away. Voila.

Ticket to the Moon Mini Moonchair: first impressions

The Ticket to the Moon Mini Moonchair is the child’s version of what is essentially a swinging camping chair that you can set up anywhere there’s a tree. This latest design from the popular camping hammock company gives you both a seat and a swing which keeps your little ones entertained for hours while you set up camp.

The Mini Moonchair arrives in an across-the-chest carry bag that kids as young as seven are happy to tote along on the trail. When you find the right tree, simply toss the suspension rope over the bow and tie a knot, then attach the chair using the carabiner provided. Your child can swing away all day and it’s all quick and easy enough to set up that it’s worth bringing along on a hike for lunch or even to the park. The Moonchair comes in loads of fun colors and is great for camping, backyard use and can even be hung inside your home, providing endless entertainment. Adult versions available for parents too.

Ticket to the Moon Mini Moonchair: in the field

I already own the Original Pro Hammock from Ticket to the Moon and love it, so I was keen on checking out the idea of a chair version for taking a load off on a long hike. I ended up receiving a mini version to test, and fortunately I do have a mini human at my disposal to put it through the ringer. Recently, we went on a wild swimming and camping expedition with another family and it was the perfect time to see how she likes it.

Here’s how it performed:  

Weight and packability 

Though it’s not as light as a typical camping hammock, the Mini Moonchair is much lighter and less wieldy than an actual camping chair. At seven years old, Edie was happy to cart the chair along the trail on her back, and when it was time to take it down, it’s super easy to just roll up and stuff back in the bag for next time.

The aluminum bars mean you can’t roll it up like a regular hammock, but they’re light and it’s easy to fit into a very packed car trunk or anywhere in the car really.

Ease of use 

I made sure to watch the instructional video before I left the house this time, as I failed to do that when setting the Original Pro and it definitely took me a little longer to figure it out. Basically, you just take the chair out of the bag, toss the suspension system over a study branch and tie a knot in it, then attach the chair via a carabiner that's provided. 

The adult version requires a bit of extra knot tying for security, but for little kids anyone can hang this chair and it’s easy to adjust the height and even the seat so it leans back a little. The whole set up really only takes a minute, and it’s just as easy to take down.

Fun factor 

Edie spent hours in the chair swinging away and spinning around. She absolutely loves it, so much that we’ve ended up hanging it for her in her bedroom at home. The only thing is that it only takes one kid at a time, so if you have multiples, you may need more chairs unless they’re very good at taking turns.

Durability and versatility 

Made using nylon webbing and aluminum, this will hold up well to boisterous play. While this can come along on any adventure, it doesn’t really double as a camping chair very easily. Your kid can hang out under a tree, but for overnight trips they’ll also need a second camping chair to sit in. In fact, it’s better just to think of this as a swing and not a chair at all.

Helinox Chair Two: first impressions

With little legs, a long back and primarily well-off owners, it’s tempting to call the Helinox Chair Two the corgi of the camping chairs world. But, expensive though it undeniably is (you might need a sit down when you first see the price tag), you absolutely get what you pay for with Helinox chairs: a brilliantly designed and very well put together piece of camping furniture that will do the job it’s made for with aplomb and last for many years. And so it is with the Chair Two.

This chair is the big brother of – you guessed it – the Helinox Chair One and Helinox Chair Zero (all the South Korean brand’s creative juices are used coming up with designs and colorways, rather than product names, it seems). Made with DAC’s proprietary aluminum alloy poles, all connected together by an umbilical cord, the 11-section frame of the Chair Two slots together in exactly the same way as the brand’s other chairs – which looks complicated initially, but becomes the work of seconds after you’ve done it a few times.

With a similar seat height (25cm), the main distinguishing feature of the Chair Two over the Chair One is the much higher back, in contrast to the more laid-back bucket-seat style of the One. This extended back makes the Chair Two much more supportive and upright, but also results in a slightly bigger and heavier product when packed away.

The weight difference between the Chair Two (1,240kg / 2lb 12oz) and the Chair One (960g / 2lb 2oz) is marginal, and if you enjoy kicking back and staring at the stars with your head and back well supported, the Two is for you. For gram-counting backpackers and bikepackers, however, the 510g Helinox Chair Zero is the smartest option.

For a range of other camping scenarios when you don’t need to hike or bike miles to your site, and for a whole load of other outdoor occasions, the Chair Two is one of the best camping chairs on the market.

Helinox Chair Two: in the field

Over the last 12 months, I’ve used the Helinox Chair Two on multiple camping trips and alfresco social occasions, from festivals, picnics in the park and days at the beach through to school sports days. 

It is a tiny bit too heavy and bulky for backpacking adventures, but that’s what the Chair Zero is for. The Chair Two is much more supportive and comfortable than its super-skinny sibling, and the long back really comes into its own when you’re kicking back in camp, staring up at the stars, gazing into the fire or chatting with friends.

With your bum about 25cm off the floor, this chair is the ideal height to sit in while operating a camping stove – although it can be a bit low if you’re intending to eat around a camping table.

Some people might find it a bit of an effort to get out of the Chair Two to grab a drink – which is something you might have to do fairly often, because there’s no bottle/can/cup holder built in to this design.

These are quite minor quibbles, though. The Chair Two has lots of other clever features, including an extremely well ventilated, mesh-based rear panel to stop your back getting sweaty. The chair’s carry bag can also be stuffed with a fleece (or similar) and used as a pillow, attached via corresponding Velcro strips specifically designed to accommodate this innovation.

The best camping chair overall

We weren’t sure we saw the point of two-person ‘loveseat’ camping chairs – until we tried Kelty’s Low model, definitely the best camping chair of its type. We’ve been testing the Low Loveseat out for over a year now, and it’s come along on every camping trip and been trotted out for every BBQ. There’s plenty of room for two people (you don’t need to be a couple to use it – as Kelty attest, there’s loads of space for ‘two people and the dog’) and it also supports solo sitters. The wide padded polyester fabric is super comfortable, dries quickly and doesn’t show dirt, and like the alloy steel frame, looks and feels like great long-lasting quality. 

Wide feet make the Loveseat sturdy and unsinkable on any surface – we’ve even used it on the beach with no issue. As the name hints, the Low Loveseat has short legs and sits close to the ground (34cm/13.5in), making it nigh-on impossible to get up from it without looking rather ungainly – not ideal if you have reduced mobility. There is a taller version available for a similar price, but what you gain in height you lose in stability. The Low Loveseat folds up in seconds and fits easily into its sturdy carry case. The best camping chairs for comfort

Most of the best camping chairs confine you to a single position, which is fine for a many scenarios (while eating for example) – but the Stargazer lets you lay back and relax when you want to gaze up at the sky and watch the stars appear. On test, we found the Stargaze Recliner to be a fine-tuned and well-engineered chair. The frame-and-pulley system allowed us to recline and swing in rhythm with our thoughts and surroundings. An integrated headrest removable pillow and padded arms and leg rests further invited us to lean back and sway with the wind. 

Set-up is a three-step process that takes less than one minute, and the aircraft-grade aluminium flexes while you swing. Feature rich and relatively light, the Stargazer is a portable and luxurious lounging throne for campers, hikers, sports enthusiasts, picnickers and garden dwellers. With handy pockets for a water bottle/beer, book, smartphone, snacks and much more, there’s little reason to get out of this in a hurry, it's one of the best camping chairs out there.

Why sit still when a rocking chair offers so much more pleasure? The MaxRelax Pod Rocker uses patented ‘Spring-Action Rocking Technology’ to supply a smooth, consistent rocking motion when you are sat outside staring up at the stars or into the campfire. 

On test, we found the soft, quilted fabric on the sling style seat adds another level of comfort to the rocker. For convenience, there’s the expected cup holder and the more unexpected smartphone pocket. The Pod Rocker doesn’t come with a stuff sack, but one strap for carrying and another to keep the folded legs organized makes transport trouble-free.

Helinox chairs are brilliantly designed and very well put together pieces of camping furniture that all do the job they’re made for with aplomb and last for many years. Assembly looks complicated initially, but it’s very simple after you’ve done it a few times. The Chair Two is made with DAC’s proprietary aluminium alloy poles, all connected by an umbilical cord, and we were able to slot the 11-section frame of this model together in seconds.

The main distinguishing feature of the Chair Two over Helinox’s other popular chairs (the Zero and the One) is the high back, which results in a much more supportive and upright seat, but also makes the overall product slightly heavier and larger to carry. The weight difference between the Chair Two (1,240kg / 2lb 12oz) and the Chair One (960g / 2lb 2oz) is marginal, and if you enjoy kicking back and staring at the stars with your head and back well supported, the Two is for you. (For gram-counting backpackers and bikepackers, the 510g Chair Zero is the smartest option.)

On test and with our tester's bum about 25cm off the floor, it was a bit of an effort getting out of the Chair Two to grab a drink – which is something you might have to do fairly often, because there’s no drink holder in this design. Keep your camping drinks and snacks on hand with Coleman’s comfy director-style chair – the handy side table means you don’t need to bring a separate folding camp table with you. We like the curved arms and wide supportive back panel of this model, which only weighs 3.5kg but can still take up to 113kg of weight. A smaller weight and size makes the Deck ideal for popping into motorhome storage space and car boots when you’re on the go. 

Top marks for easy transportation, too – the chair folds up in seconds, and two built-in straps mean you can carry the Deck chair without needing to stick it in an easy-to-misplace carry bag. The aluminium legs are connected, so you won’t sink into soft ground. The chair’s coated polyester material is easy to wipe clean but we’d still have preferred a darker colour to this light khaki, which does look dirty quickly. However, if you want to kick back and do your best Tarantino or Spielberg impression, this is the best camping chair for the job.

Ever heard of a papasan chair? Also known as a moon chair, these round cushioned designs are as comfy and inviting as they look. They translate well as folding camping chairs, and our top pick if you want to go for a portable moon is Outwell’s Kentucky Lake. Made with a steel frame, it will hold pretty much anyone’s weight, and we found the thick, padded circular cushion was lovely for lounging around in on test. We also like the adjustable and removable headrest, which makes the Kentucky Lake comfy for reading. 

There’s one downside here – the hefty weight and bulk of the chair, which means it’s only really suitable for larger car boots and longer camping or glamping holidays where you’re setting up in one spot. That said, the Kentucky Lake is also brilliant set up in the garden all summer long, and wouldn’t even look out of place in your sitting room. Yeti brings its reputation for bombproof coolers to the best camping chair market. The Trailhead is rugged, durable and – to be honest – a bit heavy. For that trade-off, comfort is king. On test, we found the crossover frame makes set-up and take-down effortless. Color-coded tensioners on the back and arms lock into place for stability. This chair doesn’t wobble or tilt one bit. 

Wide feet on the bottom of the legs keep you grounded, even on slightly unlevel terrain. Comfortable for hours of campfire debates, the fabric is UV rated to prevent fading over time. This is a camping throne best used when you don’t have to carry the chair very far, but once the Trailhead is set-up you won’t want to leave. Just sit back, relax and watch the sun set and the stars come out to play.

The best lightweight camping chairs

After a portable mini chair for lightweight adventures? Look no further than the Helinox Zero, possibly the best camping chair for backpacking. It may look and feel like your standard comfortable camping chair, but this clever design is lightweight and packs down small enough to fit in the side pocket of a backpack, or into a small daysack. It may be compact but on test it felt very strong and solid. It's made with ripstop polyester and aluminium poles, and can support up to 120kg. We found it to be surprisingly comfortable, even though it’s so low to the ground, and it hugged our tester's back nicely.

The Zero currently comes with a free removable padded seat warmer, which you can leave behind if space is at a premium but which definitely makes the minimalist nylon bucket seat comfier and warmer if you do use it. This chair has a three-digit price tag, but we’d argue it’s well worth it if you’re often exploring off the beaten track.

There is usually a trade-off in camp chair design, and saving weight often means some sacrifice in comfort. The Big Six has no truck with compromise – we found it was both comfy and light (although it’s a bit bulky to take backpacking). A tall back and wide seat cradle your body and, as a new feature for this chair, cup holders on each arm keep your favorite beverages close at hand – perfect for oft-forgotten left-handed drinkers (and those thirsty types who like to have two drinks on the go, or one for now and one lined up for later).

The Big Six boasts a patented hub-less frame construction, color-coded shock cord poles and a self-adjusting center pole creates a stable platform on uneven terrain. It packs small, with a stuff sack included. Durable fabrics and lightweight aircraft aluminium poles stand up to a busy season outside. Some of the vivid patterns used are inspired by the flora and fauna of Routt County, Colorado, home of Big Agnes Mountain. 

Also, this is one of the best camping chair purchases for giving back, as a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each these chairs goes to supporting the Continental Divide Trail Coalition and the Yampa River Fund.

This is a lightweight, comfortable and easily collapsible camp chair that we found was light enough to carry in a pack for some overnight adventures, although the packed size does mean it’s a little long for carting on big backpacking trips. However, add the Simmer chair to your gear list and you will be rewarded with a comfortable place to rest whatever kind of camping you enjoy. Compact, with a rugged powder-coated steel frame, the nylon mesh seat fabric kept us cool, no matter how hot the sun got on test. Deep pole pockets at each corner create a solid fit for the chair frame. 

For some older and/or taller users, the-close-to-the ground seat might be a bit challenging to get up out of. One of the smart features we really liked about the Simmer Chair is that the carry bag (which is, of course, included) can be attached to the legs of the chair for use as a zippered accessory pocket.

Bucket-style chairs are a great choice if you don’t want to feel weighed down by bulky camping kit, and are ideal for quick overnighters as well as day trips and festivals. Alpkit’s Vagabond is one of the lightest bucket chairs we tested at under 1kg, but despite looking dinky it takes campers of all shapes and sizes easily, and feels reassuringly solid.

It doesn’t fold up quite as small as some of the other bucket chairs we tested, such as the Helinox Zero, but it will still fit in a larger backpack. We liked the tough fabric and the mesh panels, which are great for keeping you cool in the dog days of summer.

The Vagabond doesn’t pop into shape instantly, but assembly is quick and easy. The only downside is that the slim feet do sink into soft muddy ground or sand, so it’s only really suitable for harder surfaces. The Vagabond’s low height is great if you’re cooking on a stove that’s perched on the floor, or you could make things easier with a table – Alpkit also makes an easy to assemble low Vagabond camping table to match its chair.

Remember when the ultimate in teenage bedroom furniture was an inflatable bubble chair? Get a slice of that ’90s nostalgia for your camping setup with Hi-Gear’s inflatable Pod chair. 

Ok, so it isn’t practical for more adventurous camping (or indeed, for camping anywhere but on grass and other forgiving surfaces) but it’s great fun, and we found it was surprisingly comfortable for lounging around on for children and adults alike. You’ll need a pump to inflate the Pod, which isn’t included, but on test we found that it holds its shape well once it was blown up. Plus, deflating the Pod and rolling it up into a slim tube makes it easy to pack away, and at 1.4kg it doesn’t add much weight to your camping set-up. 

The soft-flocked surface feels nice against bare skin, unlike the plastic chairs of yore, and the Pod will easily support anyone weighing up to 100kg, although you do end up very low to the ground. Great for festivals and perfect for free-ranging kids, who will love sitting on (and playing with) these squashy chairs.

The best cheap camping chair

In the market for a lightweight bucket chair but don’t want to splash too much cash? Decathlon, purveyors of affordable and functional camping kit, have come through yet again with this low folding camping chair, which at just 1kg is great for wild camping, weekend camping and bike packing.

This little chair packs down very small indeed – we even managed to squeeze the pack into a water bottle pocket – which is perfect for multi-day hikes or for popping in your pannier for a pit stop on longer cycle rides.

You’ll need to assemble the chair when you need it, which we found a hassle to figure out on our first attempt as no instructions are included, but it does only take a minute or two once you get the hang of it. Like with all the smaller chairs we tested, there’s some sinking if you’re on soft ground (a pity, as wider ski pole-style basket tips would help stop this).

The Low Chair doesn’t feel as strong and sturdy to sit in as some of its best camping chair peers (the Helinox Chair Zero, for example, which it otherwise resembles), but then again it does cost a fraction of the price, and it’s definitely comfy for stopping for a cuppa or stirring your evening meal.

What to look for when buying a camping chair

A camping chair has the be the most essential luxury item on anyone's camping checklist. Not only will the best camping chairs improve your average camping weekend, but they should last you for decades of trips, BBQs, garden parties and festivals too. Whether you're camping with kids or embarking on an epic thru hike, or just indulging in a bit of nature watching with your best binoculars, you'll be glad of the purchase.

An important purchase consideration is the way each chair designer creates a stable platform. Some of the best camping chairs are simple tripod designs, inspired by tent pole structures, while others are more complicated systems with clips and side braces to keep a heavier user stable. 

Finally, an often-overlooked decision point is seat height. In general, lighter weight models, ideal for backpacking adventures, put you closer to the ground (and for some users, this means getting up can be challenging).

Weight and size

Have a think about where and how you plan to use your new camping chair before you invest. If you’re going wild camping or usually only camp for a weekend at a time, small, lightweight models such as camping stools and bucket chairs that can fit into or strap onto your backpack, along with your one-person tent or bivvy, are your best bet. 

If your idea of a good camping holiday is full bells and whistles for two weeks, staying in a posh glamping tent or a plush campervan, you can afford to pick larger but heavier recliner chairs that are big on comfort. Don’t forget to consider how you’ll transport your new chairs – once folded, they need to fit easily into your car boot as well as in the storage space you’ll be keeping them in when you aren’t camping. 

Most brands list the weight and pack size of their chairs, so it’s easy to compare. If you want to carry a chair in your backpack for any reasonable distance, we recommend choosing a model weighing around 1kg.

Just like in Goldilocks, there’s a best camping chair out there designed to suit your preferences. There are also 2-person sofa-style seats, which are lovely for getting cosy around a campfire. When it comes to getting the very best camping chair, we do recommend spending as much as you can afford to on a quality design, as they’ll last you longer – some are so well-made and attractive that they work as patio furniture or even as spare indoor chairs, which makes more expensive models worth the investment if you can use them year-round. 

If you plan to use your chairs to eat around a table, make sure they sit at the right height. Many portable camping chairs tend to be low to the ground – if you’d find that a struggle to get in and out of, make sure you choose a model that’s as tall as the chairs you find comfortable at home.

Seat four around this simple-but-sturdy table from Coleman. The surface of the table has an innovative antimicrobial treatment to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. While it was hard to test how well this works in real life, this was definitely one of the easiest tables to wipe clean and one of the quickest drying of all the models we reviewed. 

The legs stand out, too – and not just in the obvious way. They’re reassuringly solid, yet lightweight, and have pivoting “Sand Feet” to prevent the table sinking into soft ground. These work really well, and keep this table feeling solid even on uneven ground. 

When no longer required, the legs fold neatly into the table top and there’s a handle for easy transportation and storage. So while the table doesn’t fold up small, it does fold pretty flat for popping in the bottom of the car boot or against a wall once you’re home.

Who says you can’t take a table wild camping? If you like to head into the wilds with your tent on trekking or bikepacking expeditions but still like a bit of luxury once you get to your camping spot, take Robens’ Adventure Small Table along with you for the ride. 

Folding up into a slim pack that resembles a set of tent poles, the Adventure Small Table is easily erected to form a small and simple (but sturdy) table with aluminum legs and a polyester surface. 

It works as a coffee table, for an impromptu game of cards or even as a small side table at night if you’re bringing a camping bed. The top of the table is fabric, rather than a solid material, so it is a bit more wobbly than a plastic or aluminum tabletop would be, but it still works well to hold glasses and plates.

Best camping tables for families

Decathlon’s Folding Camping Table looks quite small and unassuming at first glance, but open it up and this design transforms into a large table that comfortably seats six people around a 120cm-long tabletop. 

Four foldable camping stools are also included (the version with stools is not available in the US, where the table alone is available for $70), and come ready-stored inside the folded table. 

An aluminum frame and steel legs make this table sturdy enough to take 50kg of weight, and the laminated top is easy to keep clean. You can also adjust the legs of this table, which makes it perfect for children’s meals or for using as a low coffee table, and the stools work fine as dinner seating and will also suit littler campers (but are a bit small and flimsy to work as proper chairs for adults). 

We thought the Folding Table looked great on test, with a bright turquoise top featuring a geometric design and curved corners that are safer than sharp-edged corners. This table even looks smart enough to crack out at a barbece or a party if you’re in need of extra entertaining space.

If you want a sensible and easy-to-use table for two adults and two children, we’d recommend this rather smart Vango Orchard bench set. 

The 100cm-long tabletop offers plenty of room for sharing, it’s easy to wipe clean and is fully waterproof. The two included benches seat two people each, and are comfortable and reasonably solid as long as you set them up on flat ground. 

The benches also fold neatly inside the main table for easier storage when you break camp, and the whole shebang can be picked up by its carry handle. 

This is a table that also comes in very handy in the back yard – the extra surface space and seating is ideal for having big crowds over for barbecues. The table doesn’t fold in half, so it’s less suitable for storing in small spaces – pick this design if you’ve got a spacious garage and car..

Best camp kitchen tables

Keen camping chefs will find their lives made easier by this table, which doubles up as a portable kitchen counter, so you can prep all the fabulous meals you’re planning to cook alfresco. 

The lightweight Outwell Andros features a flat surface on which it’s easy to prepare ingredients (and to wipe clean when you’re done), plus a handy fabric cupboard for storing ingredients or cooking equipment. 

Four hooks on the side of the table let you have kitchen towels and implements handy, and the table is sturdy enough to pop a stovetop barbecue on if you fancy sizzling up some sausages. 

The top of the table will fit two people for supper once you’re done cooking (and the storage bag is removable) but we reckon this table is best used as a cooking-specific station if you’re making food for a big group. It also works well as a storage table for food and kit in a large family tent.

Best high-end camping tables

Zempire’s Kitpack is a table to suit all occasions – literally, as its height is adjustable from a low, coffee table-style 46cm to a dining-ready 65cm. This makes it the perfect quiver-of-one camping table if you don’t want to splash out on more than one product. 

When the legs are extended this table seats four, and the legs lock sturdily and feel solid even on bumpy ground. Bamboo is a great material to make a camping table out of, as it’s lightweight and naturally antibacterial. 

The Zempire Kitpack comes with its own carry bag for easy storage and transportation, and there’s an optional storage hammock you can buy separately to hang under the table, which makes this table work as a kitchen station for food prep or as a storage table to pop in a bigger family tent.

Even functional products like camping tables have their fancy versions – meet the Safari Folding Table by Barlow Tyrie. 

Inspired by safari-style dinner setups, this solid little table seats two comfortably and is made from beautiful quality teak wood. It’s small, light and portable enough to bring camping with you in the car, where it makes an attractive change from basic aluminum camping tables and feels far sturdier than most cheap tables thanks to its solid wooden legs. 

Back home, this good-looking design is perfect in a garden or even a kitchen, so while it’s expensive you do get more versatility for your buck. The wood will need more care than wipe-clean designs would, but the upside is that this table should look good for years to come, and has been designed so that it can be safely left out in the elements uncovered.

A smaller side table comes in handy for holding drinks when you’re sitting by the fire, for playing cards around, for setting breakfast out on or even for using as a bedside table in bigger tents.

Have a think about where and how you plan to use your new camping table before you invest in one. If you’re going backpack camping or usually only camp for a weekend at a time in a smaller or one-person tent, then small, lightweight models that fold down compactly and weigh under 1kg are your best bet. 

For full-on family camping adventures, big tables over 100cm in length will let you fit the whole crew around the table for a meal, while its weight and the storage space required to cart it around will be less important. 

Don’t forget to consider how you’ll transport your new table, though – once folded, it needs to fit easily into your car boot as well as in the storage space you’ll be keeping it in when you aren’t camping. Most brands list the weight and pack size of their tables, so it’s easy to compare. 

If you want to carry a table for any reasonable distance, we recommend choosing a model with a carry case or an in-built carry handle. 

Design

There are more kinds of camping tables to choose from than you might think. Do you want a dining table or a coffee table? One that includes chairs? Or even one with added storage? 

But the main design features to consider are: the number of people a table can sit; whether it will fit in your tent if you plan to use it inside; and how packable it is to suit your storage needs. 

Even the cheapest table will usually support up to 50kg of weight, but if you plan to use a table to crack out your double-burner camping stove and hold a hefty barbecue, for example, it’s a good idea to pick a sturdy, well-made model over a cheaper number. 

We do recommend spending as much as you can afford to on a quality design, as it’ll last you longer. And some camping tables are so well-made and attractive that they work as patio furniture or even as spare indoor tables. This makes more expensive models worth the investment if you can use them year-round. 

Features

The best camping tables are lightweight but sturdy, easy to fold down to stow away, and made with tough materials that can withstand the elements. Look for aluminum legs, which have a good weight-to-strength ratio, or sturdy steel. 

A wipe-clean, waterproof tabletop is essential. We’d also recommend picking tables with their own carry bags, as these are useful if you’re popping the table away in the garage for the winter and for carrying in and out of campsites or festivals with ease. 

Many camping tables come with a set of chairs, benches or stools included. These can be a good deal if you don’t already own camping chairs. If you do have chairs already, make sure you pick a table that’s the right height for your current chairs. 

GCI Outdoor Freeform Zero Gravity Lounger: first impressions 

Comfort is important after a long day of hiking, and this chair is particularly good if you’ve spent long hours exploring. GCI Outdoor has a range of chairs and rockers alongside all of their camping products, and the Freeform Zero Gravity Lounger may be one of the most notable for its comfort-focused technology. Two modes – freeform and zero gravity – are easily accessed with simple movement of the right side handle. 

‘Zero gravity’ means you can allow your entire body to recline into a weightless position, and if you want to stay upright you can do so and have your legs elevated or not. 

The Freeform Zero Gravity Lounger includes an adjustable headrest, which can be moved up and down the entirety of the chair back, and can be locked in position for as long as you like. The combination beverage and phone holder keeps essentials close even while you’re in full lounge mode.

We tested the GCI Outdoor Freeform Zero Gravity Lounger at 18 hours of Fruita – an overnight endurance mountain bike and camping event in May at Highland Lake State Park in the Colorado desert. My husband Bobby started his riding season strong with a team for the event, and he was happy to report that the GCI Outdoor Freeform Zero Gravity Lounger kept his legs in recovery mode whenever he wasn’t biking. 

When you really need to rest, the lounger’s zero gravity mode takes all pressure off of your muscles and joints. It’s comfortable enough to sleep in, and the pillow can be easily adjusted around your head for extra support. Moving between positions is really easy with the large side handle, and it’s nice to have a morning coffee or cold drink in the holder so you can be hands-free when you’re reclined.

This chair is larger and heavier to transport than more compact camping chairs, but the extra effort in getting it to camp is worth every ounce. Really there’s nothing like putting your legs up after a long day of outdoor activity, and the Freeform Zero Gravity Lounger delivers in the comfort that it offers. 

The mesh backrest is nice for warmer weather as it provides ventilation, and all the surface materials are generally easy to clean. Bobby was using it in segments during the team bike race, and while he did get the chair pretty dirty, sweat stains and grime came right off with a simple all-purpose cleaner and rag.

The value that your best camping chair adds to your adventures can barely be overestimated. Relaxing around the campfire at night in comfort with a tasty beverage in your cup holder and your favorite camping blanket on your lap is hands down the best way to recover from a day of exploring. Once you’ve experienced it you can never go back to shivering the night away on a cold, hard rock, no matter how much you love roughing it. 

When you get home from a car camping trip, happily exhausted, it’s so easy to just chuck all your gear in the garage until next time, but when next time rolls around it’s annoying and messy to have to load up a bunch of grimey gear into your car. Your camping chair is bound to pick up mud and sand if you’re having fun outdoors, never mind the odd spillage of beer and food, and giving it a regular clean makes it nicer to sit in and helps keep ants away from your campsite. How to clean camping chairs 

When you get back from your camping trip, set up your camping chair in your driveway or your garage – or even your bathtub if that’s what’s available – then go and grab the following:

• Your vacuum cleaner (hand vacuums work great here)
• A basin of hot water
• Dish soap
• A cleaning brush or old toothbrush
• A cleaning cloth or old rag

Next up, get to work with these easy steps to get your camping chair looking as good as new: 

1. Remove any caked dirt 

First, you’ll want to remove any clumps of dried mud or sand. If it’s well caked on, scrub at it with a brush first then use your vacuum cleaner to hoover it up. Make sure you get the underside of the seat, too. 

2. Scrub the chair 

Add a good squirt of dish soap to your basin of hot water and get scrubbing. If your chair is really filthy, dip the brush in the soapy water and use it to scrub the canvas of the seat and chair back. You can use a cloth on both the seat and frame if it just needs a general wipe down. 

3. Wipe it down 

Don’t leave your chair covered in soap. When you’ve finished scrubbing it, you can hose it down, or get yourself a basin of clean water and either dump it over the chair or just use a cloth and wipe the whole thing down. Most camping chairs are waterproof so there shouldn’t be any issue with soaking it. 

4. Let it dry 

To keep your camping chair in great condition and avoid rusting, don’t fold it away soaking wet. Let it sit and air dry for a couple of hours. 

5. Store it properly 

When it’s dry, fold up your camp chair properly and place it in its storage bag if it has one. Store your camping chair somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, such as in your garage, a closet or under your bed. If it’s the end of the camping season and you’re not going to be using it for a while, it is recommended to disassemble it first if possible to help prevent rusting.

Dometic Forte 180: first impressions

Initially this large director-style Dometic Forte 180 feels heavy and seems a bit bulky for a camping chair, but when you unfold it and put up the integrated table, all that heft starts to make sense.

Made with tough powder-coated steel and 1200D polyester, the Dometic Forte 180 instantly instils confidence. This is no flimsy, semi-disposable chair; it can hold a huge amount of weight and it is extremely robust.

At a little over 18lb, this is definitely not a lightweight camping chair, but it will easily last long enough for a lifetime of outdoor escapades, from camping trips to picnics and patio parties. And while the Dometic Forte 180 doesn’t come with a carry case, the whole setup does fold (nice and easily) into a fairly flat package that can usually be accommodated and transported in the boot of a large car or standard camping van.

I’ve been testing the Forte 180 chair in a range of outdoor settings, from campsites to beach visits, picnics in the park and garden sleepouts. It’s undeniably large and demands a bit of space, but for car and van campers with good carry capacity, this chair folds flat and can be transported pretty hassle free. And here’s a hint: pack it first, so that it lies flat with other gear stored on top.

There’s no carry bag, which is a shame, as it would provide protection from scratches during transportation and help people cart the chair over short distances (to the tent pitch or beach, for example). However, once you reach your camping or picnic spot, it opens extremely easily, supplying a super-strong seat for wining, dining, watching the sun set over the sea or relaxing around the campfire. 

If you’re a parent or grandparent who usually ends up with a little passenger every time you sit down, this chair will easily support the extra weight – it can comfortably handle 180kg (which us where the numerical part of the name comes from).

It also boasts an integrated side table on the right-hand side, which pops up very simply and makes for the ideal perch for a cup of coffee or a glass of something cool and refreshing. Lefties (like me) have to improvise, but we’re used to that.

The seat height is relatively high, making it easy to get in and out of, even for those with limited mobility. The positioning is very upright, which is excellent for posture and performing practical seated tasks, but won’t suit slouchers more inclined to recline. The arms are padded for comfort, and there’s extra cushioning on the back, although it’s not high enough to have a headrest.

The feet are two parallel bars (part of the integral structure) that extend for the full depth of the chair and make it fantastically stable on even ground and some other terrain (sand and soft turf for example), but can be problematic on rough or ridged ground, where rocks or roots can make it wobble if you’re not careful.

Mountain Warehouse Bucket Camping Chair: first impressions

When you first pull the the Mountain Warehouse Bucket Camping Chair out of the carry bag that it comes with you could easily be forgiven for thinking that it’s a child’s camping chair, and that’s even when you’ve unfolded it.

It really does appear diminutive. But looks can be deceiving and this bucket seat can support a good amount of weight (110kg / 242lb), which is quite a lot of camper.

Nicely designed and made from durable steel and polyester, this seemingly simple chair is surprisingly robust and feels as though it will last for a reasonable length of time, making it a good deal for the modest price tag. But can it compete with the chairs in our Best Camping Chair buying guide? We put it to the test…

Mountain Warehouse Bucket Camping Chair: on the trail

Sometimes, a compact size and simplicity are massive virtues, and that’s certainly the case with this bucket chair from Mountain Warehouse. When you’re camping or hanging out at an outdoor gathering and you’re looking for somewhere to park your posterior, all you really need is a bit of comfort, and this chair totally delivers that. 

The bucket design cradles your backside nicely and makes you feel relaxed, whether you’re reading, talking to friends around the fire, scoffing something you’ve just prepared on your camping stove or just indulging in a bit of nature watching with your best binoculars. It’s a small chair, but with a low center of gravity it feels safe and secure, although people with limited mobility might struggle to get out of it easily. 

Being a bucket design, there are no arm rests and therefore it also lacks drinks holders, but being a lefty in a righthander’s world, I’m well used to holding my brew or placing it on a table or tree stump – others might miss these features more than me.

I have been testing the Mountain Warehouse Bucket Camping Chair in fields, hillsides, campsites and beaches, and the feet and smart frame design make it stable on almost all terrain types. It comes with a carry bag, is light enough to carry over short distances (for example to the beach or parties in the park) and is so compact that it’s ideal for keeping in the car, ready for impromptu picnics.

For car camping, the lure of being able to load up all your home comforts is hard to resist, but do you ever stop and wonder how much is too much? Of course, you want to bring your roomiest tent, plushest sleeping pad and comfiest camping chair, but do you need a camping table, too? After all, you’ve probably noticed that most developed campgrounds have at least one picnic table per campsite, so what’s the point in bringing your own?

While it’s true that you’ll usually have a picnic table provided if you’re in a developed campground, we think bringing your own camping table is a great idea, even if you're not heading into the backcountry. Not all campgrounds provide picnic tables and even if they do, they may not have enough and other groups could be using them when you want to eat. If you’re camping with a group, a single picnic table may not provide enough seating for everyone (they’re typically only good for 6 - 8 people) so you might need a backup.

There are other advantages of a camping table over a picnic table to consider, too. Hard wooden benches aren’t the comfiest for sitting on for long periods, but with a camping table, you can gather round on your camping chairs when it’s time to take a load off.

Additionally, your folding camping table is movable, which means you can set it up in the shade or under a waterproof shelter like a tarp, while picnic tables are heavy and practically impossible to move (your camp host may not be too keen on your moving their tables, either). 

Finally, having the extra surface area available can be really useful for lots of reasons, while leaving your dining table free for socializing and eating. Here are some common uses for a camping table:

• Camp kitchen setup, food prep and serving meals
• Playing games
• Fixing camping gear

How to choose a camping table

The best camping tables come in all shapes, sizes and materials, so it can be hard to know where to start, but the following features are helpful to consider when making your purchase:

Weight

If you’re going to be moving the table around by yourself, make sure it’s light enough that you can safely lift it. You can offset a heavier camping table by making sure you get one with convenient carrying handles or a carrying bag like the Zempire Kitpack. If you’re going to be walking a little distance with it, you might look for one that you can carry on your back.

Packability

Your camping table should fold away so that it can easily slide under, on top of, or in between the camping bins in your car, but packability also means hinges that fold and release easily without too much wrestling.

Stability

Though a lighter table might be easier to load and unload, you want to make sure you don’t sacrifice too much stability, particularly if you’re going to be eating or preparing food on your table, or camping in the wind.

Height 

If you’re going to be sitting at your camping table, either to eat or play cards, make sure it is adjustable, like the Decathlon Folding Camping Table, so that you can make it compatible with the height of your camping chairs. If you only intend to work at it, it needs to be tall enough that you don’t have to stoop over when you’re standing, or you could hurt your back.

Size

The size of camping table you choose really depends on what you plan to do on it. If you plan to eat at yours, make sure it accommodates the number of chairs you’ll need. If you’re not sure, look into getting an extendable camping table that can adjust according to your needs.

The Barlow Safari Table is small, light and portable enough to bring camping with you in the car, where it makes an attractive change from basic aluminum camping tables and feels far sturdier than most cheap tables thanks to its solid wooden legs. 

Once folded, this table is small enough to fit into any car and is easy to store in a shed. And back at home, this good-looking design is perfect in a garden or even a kitchen, so while it’s expensive you do get more versatility for your buck. 

The wood will need more care than wipe-clean designs would, and is best cleaned regularly with a teak-specific cleaner and restained when it begins to lose color. 

The upside is that this table should look good for years to come, and has been designed so that it can be safely left uncovered out in the elements without needing to be covered up to protect it from winter conditions (we wouldn’t advise using a double-burner camping stove on it, though). Barlow also makes matching director’s chairs, which work very nicely with this table for lazy days outdoors.

The lightweight Outwell Andros Kitchen Table features a flat surface that’s easy to prepare ingredients on (and to wipe clean when you’re done), plus a handy fabric cupboard where you can store ingredients or cooking equipment.

Keen camping chefs will find their lives made easier by this table, which doubles up as a portable kitchen counter, so you can prep all the fabulous camping meals you’re planning to cook alfresco.

Four hooks on the side of the table enable you to keep kitchen towels and implements handy, and the table is sturdy enough to pop a double-burner camping stove on if you fancy sizzling up some sausages. It does only take up to 30kg of weight, though, so check your stove’s weight first. 

It’s a pity the table doesn’t have an in-built wind break, for keeping your camping stove safe and lit in bad weather, but you could always buy one separately.

Unlike some cooking-specific camping tables, the top of the table will fit two people for supper once you’re done cooking (and the storage bag is removable). But we reckon this table is still best used as a cooking-specific station if you’re making food for a big group and already own a big family table to eat around. It also works well as a storage table for stashing food and kit in the corner of a large family tent. 

Vango Granite Table: first impressions

Don’t dismiss the Vango Granite Table until you’ve tried it. A camping coffee table is a piece of outdoors kit you may no think you need – until you get hold of one and realize quite how useful they can be. 

A smaller side table comes in handy for holding drinks when you’re sitting by the fire, for playing cards around, for setting your camping breakfast out on and even for using as a bedside table in larger family tents.

Vango Granite Table: on the trails

Our pick of the best mini-tables for camping is Vango’s solid little Granite table. It’s not really granite, of course – that’d be a tad heavy for camping requirements. The name refers to the granite-effect covering on the top of the table, which is easy to wipe clean and dries quickly. 

Squat little aluminum legs unfold and lock in position creating a very solid surface that’s surprisingly hard to tip over, making this a good choice for uneven ground, or for kids to play games on. 

When not in use, the legs fold in neatly, making this table small enough to fit in smaller cars, to store in a shed or even to pop in a camper van cupboard. This design does only hold 30kg though, so don’t overload it (or be tempted to sit on it!).

A taller, folding version is also available. It’s a pity there’s no storage bag for this table, but on test it’s proved waterproof so far, so can be stored without a cover outdoors.

Zempire Kitpack Table: first impressions

Quite literally, the Zempire Kitpack Table is a table for all occasions – its height is adjustable from a low, coffee table-style 46cm to a dining-ready 65cm. This makes it the perfect quiver-of-one camping table if you don’t want to splash out on more than one design.

Zempire Kitpack Table: on the trails

When the legs are extended this table seats four, and the legs lock sturdily and feel solid even on uneven ground, and they are also easy to slide and lock at different heights. 

Bamboo clothing may be all the rage right now, but it also a great material for camping tables, as it’s lightweight and naturally antibacterial. That said, it’s a pity the top of this table is slatted rather than smooth, as this makes it a bit harder to wipe clean and keep sterilized if you’re using it for preparing food for your camping meals. 

The Zempire Kitpack comes with its own carry bag for easy storage and transportation, and there’s an optional storage hammock you can buy separately to hang under the table, which makes this table work as a kitchen station for food preparation or as a storage table to pop in a bigger family tent. The Kitpack even has a hidden bottle opener on the underside of the table, which gets it instant top marks from us.

Decathlon Folding Camping Table: first impressions

The Decathlon Folding Camping Table looks quite small and unassuming at first glance, but when you open it up this design transforms into a large table comfortably seating six people around a 120cm-long tabletop. Four foldable camping stools are also included, and come ready-stored inside the folded table. 

An aluminum frame and steel legs make this table sturdy enough to take 50kg of weight (not including the people sat around it…)

You can also adjust the legs of this table, which makes it perfect for children’s meals or for using as a low coffee table. And the stools work fine as dinner seating and will also suit littler campers (but are a bit small and flimsy to work as proper chairs for adults).

Decathlon Folding Camping Table: on the trails

The Folding Table looked great and performed really well on test. I very much liked the bright turquoise top, with its geometric design and curved corners, which are much safer than sharp-edged corners if you have little ones running around the campsite (which isn’t one of our 10 Camping Safety Tips, but perhaps should be).

This table even looks smart enough to crack out at a barbecue or a party if you’re in need of extra entertaining space, and the laminated tabletop is easy to keep clean.

I was impressed by how easy it was to transport this table, despite its large size once unfolded. The packed-down table is compact and reasonably lightweight, has a sturdy handle, stands up on its own for easy storage and will fit into most car boots and uncluttered camper vans. What more could you ask for – especially at this price point?

Vango Orchard Bench Set: first impressions

The Vango Orchard Bench Set takes a different approach to camp seating. When you’re heading off with a family tent and your tribe of four, you want a sensible and easy-to-use table for two adults and two children – and that’s exactly what you get with the rather smart Vango Orchard.

It’s a camping table that also comes in very handy in the back garden when you aren’t camping – the extra surface space and seating is ideal for having big crowds over for barbecues. 

The table doesn’t fold in half, so it’s less suitable for storing in small spaces, and it’s heavier than most designs in our best camping tables buying guide at almost 10kg, too. Pick this design if you’ve got a spacious garage and car boot.

Vango Orchard Bench Set: on the trails

The 100cm-long tabletop has plenty of room for sharing the best camping meals, is easy to wipe clean and is fully waterproof. On test I found that rain beaded off it and the table was a cinch to keep clean. 

The two included benches seat two people each, and are comfortable and reasonably solid as long as you set them up on flat ground. The legs of the table and bench are both on the slim side, so I’d suggest avoiding using them on sand or soft ground, where they can sink in. 

The benches also fold neatly inside the main table for easier storage when you break camp, and the whole shebang can be picked up by its carry handle.

Coleman Square Camp Table: first impressions

You can seat four friends or family around this simple-but-sturdy Coleman Square Camp Table, which folds flat when not in use, making it relatively easy to carry around, pack in the car and store (so long as you’re a well-organized packer). 

Although it looks fairly basic, there are a few innovative features on this table, including an antimicrobial treatment on the top surface to inhibit the growth of mould and mildew developing.

Coleman Square Camp Table: on the trails

While it was hard to scientifically test how well the antimicrobial treatment on the tabletop works in real life, this was definitely one of the easiest tables to wipe and the quickest to dry of all the models we reviewed.

The legs stand out, too, and not just in the obvious way. They are solid and sturdy, yet lightweight, and have pivoting “Sand Feet” to prevent sinking into soft ground. This feature works really well, ensuring the table feels solid even when it is out up on uneven ground. 

When testing out the Square Camp table we also rated using it for cooking on, as its sturdiness and 70cm height make it ideal for popping a large and heavy camping stove on for easy food preparation.  

When no longer required, the legs fold neatly into the tabletop and there’s a handle for easy transportation and storage. So while the table doesn’t fold up small, it does fold pretty flat for popping in your car boot or camper van, or against a wall once you’re home. 

We also like the grid-patterned top of the table, which is inspired by picnic blankets but can be used for a quick game of chess or checkers. A few online reviews noted that the table didn’t stand up well to heavy rain – we found ours was absolutely fine after a shower, but would recommend storing it in a dry place and drying it after rain, in case this is a long-term issue.

Robens Adventure Small Table: first impressions

Who says you can’t take the best camping tables wild camping? You can with the Robens Adventure Small Table.

If you are someone who likes to head into the wilds with your tent – on lightweight backpacking, bikepacking or canoe camping expeditions – but you still like a bit of luxury once you get to your camping spot – pack Robens’ Small Adventure table along with you for the ride.

Folding up into a slim pack that resembles a set of tent poles, the Small Adventure Table from Robens is easily erected (once you get the knack of popping the poles together) to form a small and simple-but-sturdy table with aluminum legs and a polyester surface that works as a coffee table, for an impromptu game of cards or even as a small side table at night if you’re bringing a camping bed. 

The top of the table is fabric, not a solid material, so unsurprisingly we found it to be a bit more wobbly than a plastic or aluminum tabletop would be. But it still works well to hold glasses, plates, etc when on flat ground. 

The little carry bag keeps everything neat and tidy when it’s back in your hiking backpack, and is also easy to strap to the side of a smaller rucksack or to a bike pannier.

The stuff sack and main material of the table aren’t waterproof, but they do dry quickly if you encounter rain. At this price point, we reckon this is a handy little design to own for any kind of camping adventure. A larger version is also available.

A silicone base pad gives the Horizon good grip on smooth and even sloping surfaces, and the power-coated stainless steel body resists drops and knocks. The tumbler is also available in 300 (10 fl oz), 350 (12 fl oz), 600 (20 fl oz) and 850ml (30 fl oz) sizes – or, for those who prefer a more compact shape with a strong and comfortable handle, the mug version (350ml/12 fl oz) has the same insulation properties and lid. Though predictably good at keeping drinks piping hot for hours, and cooled for even longer, the tumbler also has potential as a ‘hay box’ cooker.

Nite Ize Inova T7R Powerswitch Flashlight

The blades, scissors, file and pliers are all full-size implements and it has exceptional, best-in-class ergonomics for big and small tasks. Powertraveller Falcon 21 Solar Charger

Ever wish your loved one could check in from camp, but their phone is dead? Get them a solar charger and they can keep their phone, camera and other gadgets juiced up and ready to go. With the Powertraveller Falcon 21 Solar Charger, in bright, sunny conditions there’s the opportunity to recharge two devices simultaneously from the one via the 5V USB port and the other via a 20V DC connector, designed for laptops (up to 40W). 

The charger’s light weight for a 21W panel makes it an attractive choice for backpacking where every gram counts, and it’s easy to hook on to a rucksack or tent thanks to metal eyelets and carabiners (included in the box). The three solar panels fold up to a neat size, too, when not in use, and their IPX4 rating means they’ll withstand water splashes and dust.

SOTO Windmaster Camping Stove

For backpacking adventurers, this is one of the best camping stoves out there. Make sure the camper or backpacker in your life ends the day with a hot, tasty meal. As a classic screw-in type stove, the SOTO Windmaster has all the traditional advantages of a conventional canister-top design, namely, quick and easy set-up plus minimal weight and pack size. This makes it a good choice for extended backpacking trips or fast and light missions. However, as its name suggests, the Windmaster also offers superior performance in breezy and gusty conditions compared to most of its screw-in rivals. 

The secret is its effective engineering. The concave burner head has a small but well-designed protective lip, while the low-profile pot support places the pot very close to the flame. Together, these features combine to offer excellent wind-resistance. 

Coleman Deck Chair

You don't want your outdoorsy friends to be sitting on the wet ground, so why not get them the best camping chair? Keep your camping drinks and snacks on hand with Coleman’s comfy director-style chair – the handy side table means you don’t need to bring a separate folding camp table with you. We like the curved arms and wide supportive back panel of this model, which only weighs 3.5kg but can still take up to 113kg of weight. A smaller weight and size makes the Deck ideal for popping into motorhome storage space and car boots when you’re on the go. 

Top marks for easy transportation, too – the chair folds up in seconds, and two built-in straps mean you can carry the Deck chair without needing to stick it in an easy-to-misplace carry bag. The aluminium legs are connected, so you won’t sink into soft ground.

Sea to Summit Ultralight hammock

We can't think of a better way to support your camping friends than with one of the best hammocks for sleeping under the stars and swinging in the breeze. Clever design and high-tech materials have been used to create a fully functioning hammock that compresses down to a grapefruit-sized bundle, so it can be slipped into a pack side pocket. The suspension straps (an add-on buy; you can also use correct strength ropes) are quick to deploy while the slide buckles allow for precise alterations to get the centering and the height right. Sea to Summit advises against sleeping more than 18 inches above the ground, but that’s about the right height for comfortable and practical use anyway. 

Despite its tiny packed size the Ultralight has the necessary length and breadth for sleeping on the diagonal comfortably.

PrincetonTec Helix Backcountry Lantern

There's something both symbolic and practical about a camping lantern as a gift, and the PrincetonTec’s Helix Backcountry lantern is sure to please the camper in your life. There’s a lot to love about this little lantern – it may only weigh 155g and pack down to the size of a coffee cup, but it’s a very useful light source. Dim the light from a bright 150 lumens down to a more ambient 30 lumens, or switch to the red light mode when you want to locate something without blowing your nightvision, or if you’re flying under the radar on wild camping trips. 

We love the concertina-style lamp, which is easy to erect or fold down on the fly. The lantern has sturdy tripod-style legs for use on the floor, or can be turned upside down and hung from a branch or a tent loop – it’s also water-resistant if you encounter stormy weather. This lamp is USB chargeable.

Thermarest Compressible camping pillow

Make sure your camping friend gets a good night's sleep in the wild with Thermarest’s Compressible camping pillow. This is one of the best camping pillows out there and is packed with comfortable foam but still manages to compress down to the size of a water bottle and weighs a middling-to-light 260g. 

Thermarest also recommend this pillow for flying – it’s perfect for long haul journeys, especially if you hate inflatable neck pillows, and this versatility makes the pillow’s more expensive price point more palatable. This was the only pillow we tested with patterned designs available, which are great for kids or for cheering up your campervan, bell tent or even your sofa. The foam stuffing is also fully recycled, and four sizes of the pillow are available (we tested the medium, but you can also choose small, large and extra large).

Yeti Tundra 35 cooler

Whether they'll admit it or not, all any camper wants is a Yeti cooler, one of the best camping coolers out there. The Yeti Tundra has long been considered the gold standard in hard-sided camping coolers. And with good reason. More than any other cooler out there, the Tundra is equipped to keep your food and drinks cool on multi-day trips, all while standing up to the rough treatment of life on the road and at camp.

The Yeti is made with three-inch-thick walls of polyurethane foam insulation and uses heavy-duty rubber latches and freezer-quality gaskets to ensure your food and drinks are kept cool for up to six days. The exterior is filled with handy features too. The most impressive and useful of these are a duo of anchor points that let you strap the cooler down to your truck, boat or gear trailer, military grade rope handles, non-slip feet, and interlocking hinges that ensure an ultra-tight seal.

Night Cat Backpacking Tent

One of the best pop-up tents available. Set-up in a minute or less, the Night Cat is a sturdy, stable, single-layer shelter that is light and easy enough to take out on the trails, and big enough (just) to take two people. It is primarily designed for solo backpackers, however, and the floor plan is roomy enough for a single air mattress. Fiberglass poles deliver strength, durability and stand-up to windy breezes, but remain light to carry. Waterproof fabrics and waterproof tape on all seams keeps the water out and comfort in. Small storage bags keep poles, stakes and guy lines untangled and organized.

If you’re not backpacking, the Nightcat can still come in very handy at festivals and garden sleepovers. An inexpensive model, the Night Cat could be the perfect den away from home for recalcitrant teenagers who no longer want to share a shelter with their parents of their siblings.

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite

The NeoAir UberLite is one of the most recent additions to Therm-a-Rest's range and claims to be the lightest insulated air mat available, anywhere. In terms of weight and pack size, it is both remarkably light and impressively compact. It rolls away to about the size of a beer can and tips the scales at a mere 250g. Those figures have been achieved through a combination of clever design, the use of lightweight 15-denier fabrics and a determination to save weight wherever possible, which has meant eliminating the internal reflective layer found in other NeoAir models. Simply one of the best sleeping pads out there.

Every camper needs a chair to sit in. The ground is just not comfortable or warm enough. But for the ultimate relaxing seat, upgrade to a camping rocking chair. You can now take a rocking chair wherever you go thanks to a range of camping chairs that are easy to fold up, put in the car, and carry to your camp. We go camping to relax but there’s not much chance of that if you don’t have a good chair to sit in and enjoy the great outdoors. The best camping chairs pack up compactly enough to be carried and fit in the car along with all your other kit. They need to be strong to hold you without fear of collapse and to offer plenty of support to backs sore from hiking.

Good camping chairs should provide years of happy sitting for you and your family and be a welcome sight when you unfold them after pitching your tent and need a well-deserved rest. 

Bottom line

The best camping chairs are ones that rise right to the top of your packing checklist. When they fold up compactly but are comfortable to sit in and durable enough to depend on, you can’t imagine camping without them. They also make all sorts of events so much more pleasurable from watching sport to going on picnics. Our favorite camping chair is the Coleman Broadband Mesh Quad Camping Chair. It offers the best balance of comfort to strength at a reasonable price and will hold your drink too.

If you have had problems with portable chairs that don’t survive many seasons or feel built to last, the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair is worth a look. It’s super sturdy and dependable and will be a staple of your camping set-up for years to come.

Popular camping brand Vango has begun putting landfill-destined rubbish to a very novel use – they have designed and produced a whole range of tents, sleeping bags, camping furniture (including camping chairs) and backpacks made entirely from recycled single-use plastic.

The just-released Earth Collection is all made from newly developed Sentinel Eco fabric – a revolutionary material created 100% from rescued PET single-use plastics, widely used in water bottles.

The process sees the plastic made into pellets and then spun into a thread. This thread is then woven into a fabric, which Vango have turned into tents, sleeping bags, camping chairs and backpacks. Genius. 

And, whereas clothing such as fleece jackets made from recycled plastic remain problematic – because they shed microfibres into the ecosystem every time they are washed – this isn't an issue with furniture, tents and packs, because they're washed far more rarely, and not in the same way. 

The 2021 Earth Collection features both AirBeam and poled tents, ranging from the Osiris 500, a 5-person poled tent, to the palatial Vango Joro Air 600XL, which has a large living space as well as a queen-sized, 'Nightfall' main bedroom inner tent.

Though recycled, Sentinel Eco Fabric remains high-performing. The 70D  weather-resistant fabric flysheets have a hydrostatic head rating of 3000mm, which means they a highly waterproof, while the inners feature fully taped seams, so you have no fear of groundwater finding its way in. 

Beyond tents, the collection includes two ranges of sleeping bag, the Evolve and the Era (which is available as a double), plus several chairs – such as the Osiris arm chair and the Joro bucket-style chair – and the Mica backpack, available in 20L and 25L sizes.

In total, it is forecast that some 300,000 discarded plastic bottles will be retrieved and repurposed in the first year of the collaboration between one of Britain’s leading camping and outdoor equipment brands and Europe’s largest conservation charity.

The sleeping bags in the National Trust collection feature a 100% recycled filling made from used plastic bottles that are reprocessed and turned into a polyester fill. Both the tents and sleeping bags are adorned with an iconic oak-leaf print, synonymous with the National Trust’s logo.

“We are delighted to have collaborated with Vango on this eco-friendly collection,“ said Clare Brown, head of brand licensing and retailer development for the National Trust. “We know that the more connected people feel with nature the more likely they are to care for it. Camping is probably the closest anyone can get to nature, therefore this collaboration was an obvious one for us.

“Alongside offering supporters the chance to buy these tents for their own adventures, we are also setting up pre-pitch camping options in some of our National Trust tent campsites. These include Wasdale in the Lake District, Dolaucothi in Wales – the location of the only gold mine in the Trust’s care – and Highertown Farm in Cornwall.”

While we go camping to spend time away from home comforts and reconnect with nature in the great outdoors, having a table makes the whole experience much more of a pleasure. No one likes trying to eat on the floor, balancing a metal plate on their lap. Sitting around a table to eat, drink and play games will bring your whole party together and make for a more successful trip. 

A good camping table needs to fold up and be portable, of course. While it’s never going to be as solid as your dining table at home, it’s only worth taking if it’s stable and easy to put up and fold away. Here are some of our favorites. 

Bottom line

Sometimes when you are camping or at an event outdoors, you just need a table. It could be to cook and prepare food on or make a cup of coffee without the cups falling over on uneven ground. When that moment comes, you’ll be glad you packed a camping table like one of these. We would most like to see the ALPS Mountaineering Camp Table in the back of our car on a camping trip. It’s light but stable and the aluminum top means you use it as a stage to cook on. 

For an even more lightweight approach when you just need a surface off the ground, the Trekology Portable Camping Side Table packs so compactly you won’t notice it until you use it to make a hot drink or to play cards on. It provides just enough table to be really useful.

The folding chair is a camping essential for anyone who doesn’t want to sit on the ground. Not just camping either, whether you’re on the beach, watching an event or catching some sun in the park, you need a seat you can carry anywhere. 

One thing that can make a portable chair even more useful is an umbrella. With proper shade from the sun, you can sit in comfort without the worry of sunburn. The best umbrella chairs have canopies that are adjustable so you can create shade wherever the sun is. They also need to be easy to fold up and relatively lightweight to carry. Here are the umbrella chairs we would recommend.

Bottom line

The only thing better than a comfortable camping chair is a comfortable camping chair with an umbrella. Being able to shade yourself from the sun makes them a very pleasant place to relax outdoors when camping, spectating or picnicking. When you want the lightest, most compact and easy to carry seat available, you need a camping stool. These ingenious, usually three-legged gadgets can be transported anywhere you go, being lightweight enough even for the most weight-conscious hiker. Unfolding in seconds, they are an instant seat that’s surprisingly comfortable, even for extended periods when fishing or hunting. 

You need your camping stool to be strong enough to hold an adult’s weight year after year so a well-made, high-quality frame topped with durable fabric is important. They need to be light and fold up compactly enough to tuck in a backpack or add to your mound of camping gear. Once tried, you won’t want to venture far in the outdoors without one of these always available seats. Here are the camping stools we’d recommend.

Bottom line

Being able to carry your own seat with you when camping, hiking or fishing cannot be underestimated. The ground can be cold and wet or hard and dry but it’s rarely very comfortable. Unfold one of the best camping stools though, and you have an instant place to rest your legs, whether it’s by the campfire, on the riverbank or at top of a mountain. The camping stool we would recommend for most people is the TravelChair Slacker Chair. This three-legged stool is strong, comfortable and lightweight. Folded up you will hardly notice it in your backpack and you’ll never regret having somewhere to sit when taking a break or relaxing later on. 

If you want to have no concerns about how much weight your stool can take, the Walkstool Comfort Camping Stool regularly gets advertised holding up a family car, with one stool under each wheel. It’s a quality piece of kit. 

First impressions

The Alpkit Vagabond is one of the lightest bucket chairs we tested – weighing in at just under 1kg – but despite looking small at first glance, it can accommodate campers of all shapes and sizes easily, and feels reassuringly solid to sit in. Bucket-style chairs are a great choice if you don’t want to feel weighed down by bulky camping kit, and they are ideal for quick overnight escapades as well as day trips into the great outdoors, and al fresco festivals.

The Vagabond doesn’t fold up quite as small as some of the other bucket chairs we tested (such as the Helinox Zero, which fits in a water bottle pocket) but it will still fit in a larger backpack – and it is far more affordable than the pricier chairs in this category. We really liked the tough seat fabric and the mesh panels, which are great for keeping your back cool in the dog days of summer. The Alpkit Vagabond doesn’t pop into shape instantly but assembly is quick and easy.

In the field

We tested the chair out on a weekend car camping trip and were impressed with how strong it proved, holding even the tallest and heaviest campers we could find in comfort. The only downside is that the slim feet do sink into soft muddy ground or sand, so the Alpkit Vagabond is only really suitable for harder surfaces. The low seat height is great if you are cooking on a stove that’s perched on the floor, or you could make things easier with a table – Alpkit also make an easy to assemble low Vagabond camping table to match their chair, and the combination of the two is a great way to fit a entire picnic setup in the back of your car while taking up minimal space.

First impressions

We’ll start with the obvious attribute:  the Coleman Deck Chair with folding table comes, as it's name suggests, complete with a side table, which means you don’t need to bring a separate folding camp table with you on your camping holidays, which is extremely handy and frees up useful space in your vehicle.

It weighs in at just under 3.5kg/8lb, and we gave the Coleman Deck Chair top marks on test for easy transportation – the chair unfolds and folds up in seconds, fits in the bottom of a car boot/trunk without taking up much room at all, and two integrated straps mean you can carry the Deck chair without needing to stick it in a separate easy-to-misplace carry bag.

In the field

Unlike other chairs with built-in tables that we have tested over the years, the surface on the Coleman Deck Chair is actually big enough to hold plenty of drinks and snacks, and it locks securely into place so it doesn’t wobble if you get up or move the chair around. We like the curved arms and wide supportive back panel of this chair too. The aluminium legs are connected at the bottom, so you won’t sink into soft ground – making it ideal for taking to the beach. If you like a chair to support your upper back and neck you might not get on with this low-slung design, however. The Coleman Deck Chair isn’t really comfy enough to lounge in for hours at a time, and is better suited to evening drinks rather than all-day relaxing. The chair’s coated polyester material is easy to wipe clean but we’d still have preferred a darker color to this light khaki, which does look dirty quickly.

First impressions

The Eurohike Peak Folding Chair may be the most basic chair we have tested recently, but for the most part it does the job – it has a tall back rest, and it will take up to 90kg/198lb in weight with no issues. The frame doesn’t feel quite as solid as some of the more expensive chairs we tested out, but it will still stay put nonetheless, and wide rubber-bottomed legs help mitigate too much sinking into soft ground (which is actually better than can be said of some pricier chairs).

If you do weigh over 90kg/198lb, or regularly find yourself with a child (or partner) on your lap, we’d definitely recommend picking something better quality and more robust – the Peak does feel flimsy in construction, the seat is quite narrow, and wouldn’t suit anyone with large legs. At this pocket-friendly price the Eurohike Peak Folding Chair doesn’t need to boast of many extra design features but there’s still a cup holder in one arm that will hold your beer, plus a carry case for easy transportation.

In the field

We have been busy testing the Peak on weekend camping trips in Cornwall and always found it reliable and reasonably comfortable, although we aren’t sure it’d last more than a few years of regular use. Nevertheless, this is a great all-rounder of a camping chair, and ideal if you’re buying chairs for casual camping trips for a family of four, and don’t want to break the bank. It would also work well if you want a chair for the garden or for festivals that you can use and abuse without worrying about it. The Eurohike Peak Folding Chair is available in multiple colourways, in case you like your camping kit to be matchy-matchy.

First impressions

The Hi-Gear Inflatable Pod Chair may only be suitable for car-based trips, as opposed to wilderness forays, but it’s good fun to lounge around on in the garden, at the beach or around the campsite, and very well-priced. Some of you may remember when the ultimate in teenage bedroom furniture was an inflatable bubble chair – well, with Hi-Gear’s inflatable Pod chair you can add a slice of that ’90s nostalgia to your camping setup.

Okay, so it isn’t particularly practical for more adventurous camping (or indeed, for camping anywhere but on grass, sand and other forgiving surfaces) but it is great fun, and extremely comfortable for lounging around on, for children and adults alike. You’ll need a pump to use the Pod, obviously, and this isn’t included, but once inflated it holds its shape well.

In the field

We tested the chair out on a camping weekend in Devon and used it inside a glamping tent and outside on grass with no issues. As with all inflatable items, long-term durability will probably be an issue, and we do think the plastic Hi-Gear Inflatable Pod Chair might not last more than a few summers of regular use, unlike tougher steel or aluminium chairs. That said, for the price this is a fuss-free and fun chair, and we were surprised at how comfy it is to lean back on, even when you are reading. On the plus side, deflating the Pod and rolling it up into a slim tube makes it easy to pack away and store, and at 1.4kg it doesn’t add much weight to your camping set-up. The soft flocked surface feels nice against bare skin, unlike the sticky plastic chairs of yore, and the Pod will easily support anyone weighing up to 100kg – although you do end up very close to the ground, which won’t suit people who find it hard to get in and out of low-rider chairs.

First impressions

The Mountain Warehouse Soft Padded Folding Armchair is a simple, soft, padded, deckchair-style outdoor pew – clue in the name – and there are no hidden bells and whistles. But, for the very reasonable price, what more do you really need? The larger size and middling weight of Mountain Warehouse’s offering makes it best suited for longer car-camping holidays, or for popping in larger camper vans.

The surprisingly tough steel frame feels like it will take years of use, so this chair could potentially accompany you on many al fresco outings for years to come, and of course, it can be used at home in the garden too, and on picnics and trips to the beach.

In the field

Whether you’re heading off for a week’s camping holiday, or simply getting out for a bit of fresh air, once you arrive at your destination, the Mountain Warehouse Soft Padded Folding Armchair unfolds in seconds, so you can instantly pour a drink or grab a book and get comfortable – no messing about. Like most deckchair-style camping chairs, this design sits quite low to the ground, so anyone with dodgy knees might want to pick something with a higher seat. A head rest would have made a good addition, but we liked that the longer back rest gives great support to the tall and the short alike, and the Armchair is so comfy you can easily nap in it, which isn’t true of many of the other camping chairs we reviewed. We enjoyed using the Mountain Warehouse Soft Padded Folding Armchair on test, and our only real issue is that if the chair material, which is padded with thick sponge, gets wet it takes a lot longer to dry than more premium models, and could smell mouldy if it isn’t aired and stored properly. It’s also a pity there are no armrests. It is, however, great for sunbathing in the garden as well as at camp, and the smart khaki and orange colourways are easier on the eye than most garish camping chairs – we recommend picking the khaki, which doesn’t show up dirt.

First impressions

There’s plenty of room for two people on the Kelty Low Loveseat (and you really don’t need to be a couple to use it, as Kelty say, there’s room on these seats for "two people and the dog") and it also supports a solo sitter without any pronounced risk of tipping over (if it’s put up properly on a flat surface, of course).

The wide, padded polyester fabric is comfortable, dries quickly and doesn’t show dirt, and like the alloy steel frame, looks and feels like great long-lasting quality. The Low Loveseat folds up concertina-style in seconds and fits easily into its sturdy carry case, which clips together around the seat and comes with a padded shoulder strap. If you’d rather go for a single chair version, try the Kelty Lowdown ($55/£49.50). But whether you go for a single or a double whammy, this is a camping chair you’ll enjoy using for many summers to come.

We weren’t sure we saw the point of two-person ‘loveseat’ camping chairs – until we tried Kelty’s Low model. We’ve been testing the Kelty Low Loveseat out for over a year now, and it’s come along on every camping trip and been trotted out for every barbecue. Wide feet make the Loveseat sturdy and unsinkable on any surface – we’ve even used it on the beach with no issues. We also like the wide flat armrests, both of which include mesh cup holders (finally, a seat that caters for left-handed drinkers). As the name hints, the Kelty Low Loveseat is low to the ground, making it nigh-on impossible to get up from it without looking rather ungainly – not ideal if you have reduced mobility. (There is a taller version available for a similar price, but what you gain in height you might lose in stability.) Once you’re in it, though, it’s a chair you’ll be happy to lounge in all day long.

So, we’re all agreed, the Outwell Kentucky Lake is a sumptuously comfortable chair in which to park your derrière. But there is a price to pay for such outdoor decadence, and in this case it’s the hefty weight and bulk of Kentucky Lake, which means it’s only really suitable for larger car boots and longer camping or glamping holidays where you’re setting up in one spot and staying put for some time. That said, we tested the Outwell Kentucky Lake on many multiday camping and glamping trips, and it was always well worth the effort, providing sofa-style comfort even in the wild, which definitely can’t be said for your average folding camping chair. The Kentucky Lake is also brilliant for kicking back in when you’re lazing about in the garden during the summer, and it wouldn’t even look out of place in your front room, which all makes the price tag seem much more palatable. This style statement is guaranteed to get you questions and complements anywhere you set up camp.

Lightweight (under 4kg), it folds down small and flat for easy storage and transportation, and comes complete with an integrated carry handle and strap that clips the seat and frame together to square everything away. It’s easy to stick these slim chairs in back of your car, to store them in small campervans or to pop them in a shed over winter. The chair itself is made with a tough grey polyester canvas that looks good even with plenty of use, plus a strong black aluminium frame.

Decathlon, perennial purveyors of affordable and functional camping kit, have come through yet again with the Quechua Low Folding Camping Chair, which weighing in at just 1kg is light enough to work for wild-camping escapades, weekend-long camping adventures and backpacking and bikepacking quests.

It’s also handy to have on-hand for all-day sports such as fishing or climbing where you might fancy a breather or want to get comfy for a lunch break. If you’re in the market for a lightweight bucket chair but don’t want to splash too much cash, this is a very good option.

This little chair packs down very small indeed – we even managed to squeeze the pack into a large mesh water-bottle pocket on our backpack – which makes it perfect for multi-day hikes, backpacking and for popping in your pannier for a pit stop on longer cycle rides. You’ll need to assemble the chair when you want to use it – which we found a real faff to figure out on our first attempt as no instructions are included – but it does only take a minute or two once you get the hang of things. Like with all the smaller chairs we tested, there’s some sinking if you’re on soft ground due to the slim chair legs (a pity, as wider ski pole-style basket tips would stop this problem). The Quechua Low Folding Chair doesn’t feel as strong and sturdy to sit in as the Helinox Chair Zero, which it otherwise resembles, and you might feel slightly like you’re liable to tip over, but then again it does cost a fraction of the price, and it’s definitely comfy enough if you’re stopping for a cuppa or stirring your evening meal.
