Fjällraven Abisko Trail Fleece: first impressions 

Named for the Swedish National Park, the Abisko Trail Fleece is all about keeping you comfortable in changeable outdoor conditions.

The construction of this fleece jacket is savvy: the hood, shoulders, and chest are made from flat-knitted polyester fleece for warmth with a soft brushed inside that feels great against any bare skin, while the sides and underarms, lower torso, and forearms are made from a lighter grid-structured fleece with superior ventilation. The result is that when it's chilly, it keeps you warm for quite a while before you need an outer layer, but when you're hiking, you can dump heat easily.

The fabric has just enough stretch for the jacket to be really functional when you're hiking and climbing, without being so stretchy as to lose its integrity, and the slim fit looks great and leaves just enough room for layers.

A super snug hood stays put in the wind and fits under your helmet, and the thumb loops help you negotiate gloves without walking around with gaping holes in the cuffs of your jacket.

Pockets abound, with deep, zipped handwarming pockets that aren't much good with a backpack, and a spacious zipped chest pocket for your phone.

The face fabric is very tough and resistant to pulling and pilling, and for a synthetic fleece, it doesn't hold onto much odor.

There are lots of recycled fabrics on show here, and while we won't lie and say it's cheap, it's certainly a nice price for Fjallraven and for a fleece that you can wear from Himalayan peaks to backyard bonfires.

Fjällraven Abisko Trail Fleece: in the field

I got this fleece for trekking to Everest Base Camp this year. The journey entailed 11 days of walking over 80 miles, starting in T-shirt weather and getting increasingly cool as we ascended. We were lucky with the weather and didn't experience much rain, but started at 9,383ft above sea level, and the highest point of the journey for me was 18,519ft at Kala Patthar, so the nights were always frigid.

All of that meant that I had to be especially vigilant about layering, so my plan was to wear this over a merino wool short-sleeved top, then have both a down jacket and a waterproof jacket to layer over the top.

When I first put this fleece on, I nearly squealed with delight at how well it fitted me. I own a lot of fleeces, and very few are particularly flattering, seemingly designed for a cereal box. This one, however, actually looks nice on. I tested the women's small, which is my usual size, and it's quite slim fitting, but I can easily wear it over a light mid layer, and its fairly low profile doesn't make it difficult to layer over.

Some fleeces are of the deep pile variety and better for coffee walks by the river, while others are super technical and almost flimsy, but this one falls right in the middle and provides tons of technical prowess whilst also being quite useful for wearing around town. That also means it's really quite packable if you're traveling with it.

The first few days in the Himalayas were mostly warm and sunny enough not to need this when we were walking through the valley, but as soon as we got to our teahouse and stopped moving, I was really glad for the warmth that it provides. On our acclimatization days, where we climbed up quite steeply to higher elevations then came back down to help with altitude adaptation, I kept it on while I was moving and was really impressed by how well it breathes, wicks and dries. This is all down to the placement of panels of different types of polyester that lend both insulation and breathability.

Considering I wore this for 11 days and did a fair amount of sweating in it, it really didn't get too smelly (or maybe we were all so smelly I couldn't differentiate?) which is a welcome surprise, give that it's made from synthetic fabric.

The hood is also fantastic, soft on the inside and super snug when I'm all zipped up to keep the wind out of my ears, but it's not so tight that it pulls on the fabric of the shoulders. I didn't need a helmet on that expedition, but I've tested it out with my climbing helmet, and I can keep my hood up quite comfortably, which bodes well for winter mountaineering.

I don't love the way thumb holes look, even if I can appreciate their purpose, so I'm glad Fjällraven has gone with thumb loops on the inside of the cuffs, which made it easier to get my gloves on during one frigid alpine start.

The pockets are spacious, although the hand-warming pockets aren't really accessible when I'm wearing a backpack, and I kept my phone in my chest pocket most of the time. Speaking of wearing a backpack, the face fabric is really tough, and the shoulders don't show any signs of my straps rubbing.

If you forced me to gripe about this fleece, I suppose I could suggest a two-way zipper might enhance it, but in all honesty, it's my favorite fleece for hiking and I'm looking forward to many more adventures in it.

Never a brand to shy away from high quality and top-notch performance, Swedish outdoor outfitter Fjällräven has outdone itself with these hiking pants.

This design is intended to be truly versatile, and the brand has ensured that by using a blend of recycled polyester, cotton, polyamide and elastane that it calls G-1000 Lite Stretch. The result is a light and breathable fabric that's extremely tough, quick drying, and of course, stretchy. Basically, everything you could ask for in a pair of hiking pants.

They're not waterproof, although they're tailored so you can easily pull your rain pants on over the top of them, but they're treated with a PFAS-free DWR to hold off a light rain. What's more, the fabric on the front can be waxed for better weather resistance, while the back is all about ventilation for staying cool in hot weather.

If you are hiking in the summer wearing these pants, there are two outer thigh venting zips and the stretchy content means you can comfortably plop down on a rock for a picnic lunch. When the temperatures drop, they do block the wind quite well, and they are just roomy enough to layer over long johns, unless you have very muscly legs, in which case you may struggle with the tapered fit.

The back of the waistband is elasticated for added comfort and versatility, and they have a regular button and fly closure. There are also belt loops for those who need them.

As for pockets, you'll find two hand-warming pockets and two front of thigh pockets deep enough for most phones. These pockets have protective flaps, and one has a mesh pocket inside it, which is great for a credit card, while the other has a zipper for more security.

The trim fit looks pretty good on. With the level of stretch, we think it will work for most bodies, but if you have bulkier leg,s you may want to size up. The ankle cuffs have drawcords if you want to cinch them tighter in tick-prone terrain or to fit them over your hiking boots.

We've found these pants perfect for wearing all day and for many days in a row, and while they are on the pricey end, we see the value in the quality construction and expect them to last a long time.

Fjällräven Abisko Hybrid Trail Trousers: in the field 

For the past few years, my favorite pair of hiking pants has been my Fjällräven Keb Curved Trousers, which are both stylish and functional. When I received these for testing back in March of this year, however, they quickly became my go-to pants. I've worn them in late winter, spring, and summer on many of the UK's best trails and ended up bringing them as one of two pairs of pants on my 11-day trek to Everest Base Camp.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested my usual size – a US 4 – with a 32" (regular inseam). I've personally found Fjällräven's sizing to be a little all over the place. I always test this size, and while it's pretty perfect in the Keb Curved, in the Abisko Winter Stretch and Abisko Hike Trousers, it's too big.

Fortunately, these trousers are a perfect fit around my waist and hips, and while they might be a tad long in the leg, I think if you just order the right length, you'll have no issues in that department.

I feel I should admit that I have quite skinny legs for a hiker, and so the tapered fit works quite well for me and means I can haul my rain pants on in a hurry, and even get away with wearing these over thermal underwear. I do wonder if these would be so great on someone with big, muscular legs, but then again, they are quite stretchy and not exactly tight, so I still think they're worth a shot.

Feeling the fabric with my fingers, it's not the softest I've ever touched, but it's fine against my skin with no rubbing or chafing, even when I wear them all day. I do often struggle with the waistbands of pants giving me a stomach ache or digging in when I sit down (even with the Keb Curved if I'm honest), but the stretchy section at the back of the waistband mean these feel great whether I'm hiking or sitting and if I'm starving or have just eaten a giant meal.

Breathability and protection

The blend of synthetic and cotton fabric manages to be pretty breathable. I wore these for about the first five days of my Everest Base Camp trek and again for the descent, switching to a heavier, warmer pair for the days when we were up really high. We experienced quite warm and sunny weather while I was wearing these, but I never felt uncomfortable.

The venting zips are on the outside of the thighs rather than the inside, which I always find a bit strange, but I've used them a lot this hot summer and they're really effective.

For quite a lightweight pair of trousers, these are actually pretty rugged, so they're fine for wading through high scrub and overgrown trails with lots of blackberry bushes.

They also offer quite decent weather protection. I'd wear them for all but the most frigid winter days or high altitude conditions, and the DWR means a light rain beads up nicely. More importantly (for me, anyway), they dry in a flash when they do get sodden.

I haven't tried this out, but the front of the pants, which is the part that sees most of the rain, is compatible with Greenland Wax, so if you want to, you can make them nearly waterproof.

Durability and storage

Not only do they protect my legs well against thorny intrusions, but they seem to hold up well, still looking good as new after five months of lots of wear and washing. I tested the Lauren Green colorway, and they don't show any dirt at all.

One place where an otherwise great pair of pants sometimes lets me down is in the pockets (think shallow pockets in the wrong place) but these are winners, with two front of thigh pockets where I can easily drop my phone and have it protected by the flap, plus a hidden mesh pocket for stashing a car key or credit card. I don't tend to use the hand warming pockets, but they're deep enough to keep things safe if you do.

Depending on the context, the Swedish word Färden means ‘the journey’ or ‘traveling’, making it the perfect name for Fjällräven's family of durable and functional travel bags. There are six members in this family: two roller bags, a toiletry bag, a travel backpack and two duffel bags: an 80-liter version and this 50-liter version.

Durability and functionality are two qualities we’ve come to expect from Fjällräven but it’s the design quality and style of the gear that has elevated it to become one of the most desirable brands in the world, where outdoor apparel and casual daypacks are concerned anyway. Its Kanken daypacks are perennially popular, while we’ve yet to discover a sub-par piece of adventure kit with the Arctic fox logo attached to it.

So, I was stoked to test out the Färden Duffel to see how it measured up against the other leading haulers on the market today. The duffel was kindly supplied for test and review by the wonderful outdoor experts at Trekitt.

First impressions

Having tested Fjällräven’s excellent Kajka 55 backpack last year, this immediately sprung to mind as I inspected the Färden. The two bags share the same timeless aesthetic, where modern design meets buccaneering Indiana Jones vibes. It looks the part whether you're on safari, at the campground or staying in a fancy hotel.

It’s obviously hard-wearing but the design slants more towards travel elegance than belt-and-braces outdoor adventure. There are only two grab handles and they’re not particularly meaty; there are no gear loops for lashing equipment, and the shoulder straps are noticeably thinner than most. While something like the hard-as-nails Highlander Hauler Duffel says: ‘Go ahead, grab me, put your ice axes in me, throw me around…I don't care' – the Färden, although it’d hold its own in the adventure stakes, seems to be saying: 'I’m a little bit sophisticated for all that'.

And sophisticated it is. The shoulder straps ingeniously slot away into long, zippered compartments. When not in use the side compression straps can be used to flatten everything down for easy storage. The side pocket expands depending on your needs. And the whole thing is constructed from recycled materials entirely free of PFAS.

Design and materials

There are a few unique design features that I’ve not seen in other duffel bags, such as the side compression straps. As mentioned, you can use them to flatten the pack when it's empty, but they’re also great for compressing everything down if the pack isn’t completely full. They can then be released via a buckle if you feel like you don't need them.

The shoulder straps are ergonomically shaped for a comfortable backpack carry, and the way they taper in the middle means that they can be used as carry handles too, negating the need for separate handles. Clever. Even more neat is the way they can be stashed away into long zippered compartments when not needed. A snap link connects the straps to fabric loops on the pack. Once undone, all you have to do is feed the straps into the compartment and zip up. If your first sight was of the Färden in this transformed state and you didn’t know any better, you’d think the pack never had straps in the first place.

Fjällräven is a brand that takes pride in its sustainability efforts, using recycled materials where possible. The Färden makes use of super durable, recycled 500-denier polyamide for the main material and it feels extremely robust. As is usually the case with duffel bags, it’s water-resistant, rather than fully waterproof. So, it’ll cope with the occasional shower but don’t leave it outside during a Bangkok downpour.

Storage options

The storage options on the Färden are a little stripped back compared to some. There’s the large main compartment, which features a central, long, zippered opening rather than the usual U-shaped lid. Once inside, one of the side walls features two side-by-side mesh compartments opened using just the one zipper. I like that Fjällräven have divided this space into two, as it stops items sliding around too much inside. These are ideal for storing little items you want to have separate to the main bulk, such as a headlamp or pocket guidebook.

On the opposite side there’s a small exterior zippered pocket, which is handy for items you might want to keep handy, without having to access the main storage area. The Färden features an expandable side pocket – a design feature also seen on the Wandrd Carryall Duffel – that can be clipped out of the way using a button press when not needed. This allows you to keep larger items separate from the main compartment, such as a drybag full of laundry or wet hiking boots (in fact, Fjällräven calls it 'the boot compartment').

The Zip pulls (on both the main compartment and the boot compartment) feature rings for attaching a padlock, for peace of mind when travelling.

You can technically store items in the shoulder strap compartments too. I managed to slot a pair of folded trekking poles into them. However, there’s a couple of caveats here. Firstly, you can’t zip these up unless the shoulder straps are folded away inside and, secondly, items that aren’t as long as something like a trekking pole could easily get stuck in the bottom. It’s fair to say, I don’t think Fjällräven really envisaged these as storage options for anything other than the straps.

In the field

I’ve been using the Färden during late spring and early summer travels around Britain’s southwest, hauling kit on the way to hiking missions, using it as a car camping storage solution and even shouldering it to hike to a wild camping spot.

I was pleasantly surprised with how comfortable the backpack carry option was, given that the straps don’t look as chunky and cushioned as some. The key word here may be ergonomic. The straps are shaped like extended hourglasses, wide towards the top, thin in the middle and then wider again at the bottom. This helps to distribute the weight away from the shoulders, while the part of the pack that the back comes into contact with is nicely padded. I’d go as far as to say that this is the comfiest duffel I’ve tested when it comes to a backpack carry.

I also like the way the shoulder straps can be stowed away when not in use. However, the system, while undoubtedly fancy, isn’t as well designed as the simpler yet more effective stashing system on Cotopaxi’s peerless Allpa Duffel. On the Allpa, it’s dead easy to detach the straps and stash them in the Velcro side pockets.

Here, liberating the strap from the pack can be a bit of a chore, as the fabric loop it’s linked to is a little bit too thick in comparison to the dainty snap link. After opening the gate, the fabric tends to get caught in the groove that the gate sits in. It gets better with practice but it’s hardly intuitive. Likewise, feeding the strap into its long compartment is fairly straightforward, but not as easy as just popping it in a pocket. This is perhaps an example of where the pack is a little over-engineered – a little too sophisticated.

All in all, I very much like the Färden. It’s an elegantly designed duffel that’s perfect for travel but less so for expedition life. If you’re off to Hawaii, it’s the perfect pack. If you’re hauling an elephant’s weight in mountaineering gear to a remote basecamp, something more straightforward and with a bit more grit, like Patagonia’s Black Hole, is better suited.

Fjällräven Abisko Trekking Tight: first impressions 

Swedish brand Fjällräven is no stranger to designing rugged hiking pants, but we're used to seeing a more traditional design in styles like the Keb Curved. Technical hiking leggings, however, are having a moment and it turns out that even the Arctic Fox can't resist getting its stretch on.

The Abisko Trekking Tights are surprisingly technical. Yes, they consist of four-way stretch fabric in a body-hugging design but wait, there's more. These tights boast seriously rugged anti-abrasion panels on the seat and knees where you most often come into contact with rough rock. When we say rugged, they're actually quite unusual-feeling against the skin, though you soon get used to it.

There are also some surprisingly practical pockets including a thigh pocket that's big enough for a map or your phone and is covered to protect either and another zippered leg pocket big enough for your compass.

Don't expect thigh zips on these leggings like you're used to seeing on regular hiking pants, but as long as you're wearing them in cooler weather, don't expect to need them either. The dense weave on these leggings is thick enough to fend off a cool wind but they breathe really well. We wouldn't wear them in the height of summer, but they can handle sweat in other seasons and you'll stay comfortable.

There isn't much in the way of wet weather protection (though they do dry quite quickly) but the beauty of leggings is that they're easy to pull a pair of rain pants over. These leggings also come in a men's design with a fly.

They're really stretchy, but the sizing is a bit odd and they run large, but they might not be as comfortable as your favorite yoga pants if you size down, and we have to admit that the reinforced panels do make them feel a little strange. On the other hand, they're built to last and look great, even if they are expensive.

Fjällräven Abisko Trekking Tight: in the field 

I've been on a bit of a technical hiking leggings trek myself over the past few years, trying out various models from different brands to see if I can find the perfect fit. My favorite-ever hiking pants are the Fjällräven Keb Curved so when I was offered the chance to test out these tights, I was keen. I've been hiking in these all winter in the highlands of Scotland to get a feel for how they perform in cold and snowy weather.

Here's how they performed:

Size, fit and comfort

I usually go for a small but I was sent an XS to test in these as I'm advised that they run quite large. Depending on the brand I'm between an XS and an S but I generally prefer to size up for comfort. Even though these have plenty of four-way stretch, I think I'd have preferred to risk it and size up. They look great because they're so tight and I can wear them all day, but for comfort I'd rather just a little extra breathing room and they are tight enough that they leave marks on my legs.

The high waist is nice and there's a draw cord which I don't need because mine are so tight. I've found they never slip down which is hugely important for leggings. They're long enough for coverage without having inches of extra fabric around my ankles and mine feel like compression pants, but I'm guessing they won't if you wear your regular size.

The smaller size detracts from the comfort for me just a little, but as I said I can wear them all day – I just wouldn't wear them for yoga or lounging around it. The other aspect that reduces the comfort just a little is the abrasion-resistant panels around the seat and knees. The material is quite rough and while I wouldn't say it's exactly uncomfortable or scratchy, this feels a bit odd at first. Like wearing a diaper. But you do get used to it and soon forget all about that.

Temperature regulation and protection

Unlike some leggings I've tested, there are no breathable panels or zippered vents on these leggings, but so far I haven't missed them. In fact, the material is really excellent at breathability and wicking sweat, even when paired with rain pants over the top. I've been quite comfortable wearing these in cool and cold temperatures, even when I'm getting my heart rate up on a steep gradient.

They're thick enough to provide some warmth in winter and a decent amount of protection against thorny bushes while the aforementioned anti-abrasion panels are exactly where I need them for scrambles. I am reasonably confident these will be too warm for summer, but they're ideal for the rest of the year.

There's no rain protection, but they dry quite quickly and that's what rain pants are for anyway.

Storage, durability and value

One of the features that makes hiking leggings technical for me is excellent storage, and these leggings really shine on the pocket front. I love a thigh pocket for my phone and there's a right-hand pocket with a flap for added protection that's big enough for most maps plus a left-hand zippered one that's also big enough for a phone or compass.

Thanks to the tough panels where you might find yourself crawling on rock or sliding down a steep slope on your bum, these are quite tough, though anything with stretch will lose its shape eventually and these do have a surprisingly high Elastane content.

As for value, they're really expensive for a pair of leggings. For just a little more, you could get the Keb Curved trousers which are arguably more technical and they're more than twice the price of other hiking leggings I've tested that I think perform equally well. So, you'd need to really love the brand and really want an excellent pair of hiking leggings to invest. But will you look great in them? Probably.

Fjällräven Abisko Trekking Tight: the bottom line 

Fjällräven's Abisko Trekking Tights deliver on the brand's reputation for high quality. These hiking leggings are sleek, stylish and high-performing, though the fit might miss the mark for some. They are pricier than most, and you could find similar performance at nearly a third of the price in the Columbia Women's Cirque River II Hiking Leggings.

A controversial investigation by animal welfare charity PETA has accused the wool suppliers of Fjallraven, Helly Hansen and several other outdoor brands of animal cruelty.

Claiming to go undercover on 11 New Zealand farms, PETA investigators have released film showing workers beating and stomping on sheep, and neglecting serious injuries, among other unethical practices.

PETA claims these farms produce ZQ-certified wool used by top brands like Fjallraven and Helly Hansen, which is supposed to be ethically sourced.

PETA said the brands were using "sham certifications to pull the wool over the eyes of caring consumers".

“On these humane-certified farms, sheep wraith in terror and pain while shearers pin them down by stepping on their necks,” it said in a statement.

“They’re slammed onto hardwood floors. Farmers trained by ZQ on how to handle the animals hit them with whatever is available, often just with their fists.”

The New Zealand Merino Wool company claims to verify that its ZQ-certified wool is produced ethically, with animal welfare and care for the environment taken into consideration.

However, PETA is yet to provide evidence that the farms investigated are actually ZQ-certified, nor that they are supplying any of the brands it named.

Only one farm is named in the expose, Hunter Valley Station Farm in Otago. And according to the New Zealand Merino Wool Company, this farm is not, and never has been ZQ-certified. The farm has said it is investigating the allegations.

In a statement issued to Advnture, Fjallraven said it was taking PETA’s claims "very seriously".

“Fjallraven is currently working with its supplier, The New Zealand Merino Company, to investigate these claims and determine whether the agreed-upon standards set by the ZQ certification have been violated,” it said, before re-iterating that the sole named farm was not ZQ-certified.

“Our commitment to animal welfare and ethical sourcing is unwavering. The recent allegations are deeply concerning,” said Fjallraven International CEO Martin Axelhed.

“Ethical sourcing and animal welfare are the foundation of our practices, and we will not compromise on these values.”

The named brands aren't the only ones disputing PETA's claims. Federated Farmers, an advocacy group for New Zealand's farmers has slammed the investigation as a 'disgraceful hit-job'.

"In reality, what you’re seeing in that video is a montage showing some isolated examples of poor practice that most Kiwi farmers simply wouldn’t put up with in their shearing shed," Meat and Wool Chair Toby Williams told the Herald.

"New Zealand farmers have incredibly high animal welfare standards and we take the responsibility of caring for our animals very seriously," he added.

Alongside releasing its claims online, PETA has submitted its findings to the relevant authorities, and New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries has already begun an investigation.

Advnture contacted Helly Hansen yesterday for comment. We'll update this article with any response as we get it.

Fjällräven Expedition X-Lätt Vest: first impressions

Vests, or gilets if you prefer, are one of those categories of outdoor clothing you don’t realize you need until you start wearing one, and then you can’t believe how you ever lived without it. Even more so if your first gilet is as good as the Fjällräven Expedition X-Lätt Vest.

The best vests are perfect as an outer layer on milder, dry fall and winter days, when you can wear them over the top of a good base layer to keep your torso, neck and vital organs warm, while allowing your body to breathe and your arms to move freely whilst hill hiking or climbing. If you do get caught out in the rain, then it’s easy to pull a waterproof shell jacket over the top. And, as winter deepens and the mercury properly plummets, you can wear a gilet over the top of chunky fleece and/or beneath a thicker winter jacket.

The beauty of a vest is that it’s far less bulky to carry than a full puffer jacket or down coat, so you can pop it in a hiking backpack or daypack when you go out, just in case you need it.

Fjällräven Expedition X-Lätt Vest: design and materials

There’s a down-filled vest within Fjällräven’s Expedition range (which is a top-quality piece of apparel, and has a premium price tag to match), but the insulation used in the X-Lätt Vest that I’ve been testing is both synthetic and 100% recycled.

There are several benefits to this, beyond the (slightly) more accessible cost of the garment. It means the gilet is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and you don’t have all the ethical issues about how and where the down has been sourced. In addition, it means the fill won’t clump up or lose its thermal properties should the vest get damp, so it will keep you cozy and warm even on the soggiest days (which feather down, even with all the treatments it gets these days, still struggles to do).

And it’s more robust; of course, I’d still recommend treating all your gear with the care and respect it deserves, but these garments are intended for proper outdoor use, and you can subject a synthetic vest to more rough and tumble than a down gilet, without impacting its performance (there are no feathers to damage).

The X-Lätt Vest from Fjällräven isn’t especially thick (60g per square meter), but the fill is kept in place by multiple rows of finely stitched baffles, which give the garment a pretty classy design and look, as you might expect from the Swedish outdoor specialists.

The X-Lätt opens fully, and has a top-quality YKK zip. There are three pockets in this vest: a pair of hand pockets in the usual place, both zipped, and an interior, vertically orientated zip pocket on the left chest. It has a reasonably high neck and an extended back, which covers the top of your bum.

Fjällräven Expedition X-Lätt Vest: on the hills

I’ve been testing the Fjällräven Expedition X-Lätt over the last few months, as the end of fall has slipped by and winter proper has kicked in. When temperatures were still fairly mild, I really appreciated the additional cover this gilet gave me around my core, while still letting me hit the hills quite hard, but without overheating. Naturally, being sleeveless, there is ample ventilation around your armpits, and it’s amazing how big a difference this makes when you’re climbing steep slopes and scrambling up crags.

As the temperature has steadily dropped, I’ve been experimenting with various layering setups, wearing a variety of fleeces of different thicknesses beneath the vest, and a trying a several outer shell layers over the top. And therein lies the beauty of this top: it’s extremely versatile, and can be used in myriad different ways.

The other element I like about the X-Lätt Vest is how packable and portable it is. With the synthetic fill, you can scrunch it up and jam it into the pocket of a pack, without worrying about causing damage; and it’s super light, so you barely know you’re carrying it. But if conditions turn suddenly cold – as they so often do when you reach a peak or an exposed ridge line – it’s there to save the day and keep you warm.

The X-Lätt Vest is not as chunky or as warm has some other gilets out there, though, and there isn’t a huge amount of coverage around the upper neck and chin, areas that can feel a little exposed on very cold days.

Fjällräven Expedition Mid Winter Jacket: first impressions

It’s difficult to adequately emphasize just how chunky the Fjällräven Expedition Mid Winter Jacket feels when you first put it on. It’s like you’re being bear-hugged by the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

It’s so thick, and I felt so completely cocooned in its massive embrace, that I started imagining it wouldn’t just protect me from the cold, but could probably keep me safe from pretty much anything; like I could just curl up in a ball and roll down the mountainside, merrily bouncing off boulders on the way down like a human zorb.

I didn’t actually try doing this, and I’m not suggesting you do either, but I did put this impressive coat to the test in some sub-zero conditions, to see how it would compare to the best synthetic puffer jackets and down jackets on the market.

Fjällräven Expedition Mid Winter Jacket: design and materials

Fjällräven offer a range of puffer jackets in the Expedition range, from the brand’s original and iconic very high-end classic goose down full-fat version, which has been keeping explorers toasty and warm for 50 years, through to lighter, more packable versions of the jacket, as well as longer iterations and sleeveless vests/gilets.

The Expedition Mid-Winter jacket I’ve been testing is made with synthetic fill and, happily for all those who care about these things, Fjällräven have used recycled poly materials in both the shell and the fill of this jacket. The synthetic fill means the jacket retains its impressive loft – and therefore maintains its exceptional thermal qualities – even if it gets wet or damp (which down jackets – for all the improvements that have been made over the years – still struggle to do). The fluffy poly stuffing is also a lot more resilient and robust than goose or duck down (so you can stuff it into its carry bag and store it like that without worrying about damaging the fill – and you can even machine wash it at 40°C), plus there are no ethical issues in terms of animal welfare to consider and fret about.

There are three main packets: two hand pockets with zips and an interior chest pocket, also with a zip. Inside there are also two pouches, one on each side, in which you can stash maps, hats, gloves and other things. It comes with a pack bag / stuff sack, which is made from the same material as the jacket’s shell, so you can use it for repairs if necessary.

As you would expect from these Swedish specialists, the design and finish quality is excellent, and Fjällräven have used the best components in this jacket – it comes with chunky two-way YKK zips, for example, that will last for decades.

Fjällräven Expedition Mid Winter Jacket: on the trails

This is a serious winter jacket, for properly cold adventures, and I had booked a trip to the Baltic north to test it out in the kind of conditions it was designed to be used in. Nature intervened, however, and dumped a load of snow on the South West of England, so I couldn’t travel anywhere, but I got to check out the jacket’s capabilities on my local hills and trails, which worked out fine.

Given the extent of its puffiness, and the fact there’s no ventilation built into the design, my main worry was that I would quickly overheat while wearing this jacket, as soon as I started doing something other than standing still in the snow. In fact, this didn’t happen, and I was able to do some pretty stern hill hiking without sweating too much, which is testament to the Expedition Mid Winter’s breathability.

Essentially, though, this jacket is built to do one thing very well, and that’s to keep you very warm no matter how low temperatures go, and it does this brilliantly. Reaching exposed ridge lines and pausing on peaks, the minus-whatever temperatures and significant wind chill couldn’t touch me inside my massive protective layer.

The generous 650g fill is perfectly distributed across the jacket, and kept in place with baffles, so all your vitals are adequately covered, and the protection continues right up into the thick hood, so my ears and neck were as warm as the rest of me. The high chin shields a good percentage of your face as well, although it’s a little harder to cinch the hood in, so it can balloon a bit when you’re facing or hiking into a head wind.

As mentioned, the zips are suitably chunky and very durable, but somewhat surprisingly they don’t have pull cords on them, so the pockets can be a little tricky to open when you’re wearing hiking gloves, and this feels like a little oversight from the Nordic gnarly weather experts.

The obvious drawback to this jacket is that its chunkiness makes it quite heavy and very bulky to carry around and get into a hiking backpack, but no one is buying the Expedition Mid Winter for it svelte packability – you know what you’re getting with this coat, and it delivers in spades. It does come with a stuff sack, though, and when you’re winter camping this makes an excellent camping pillow. (I do wonder whether a proper compression sack might be a good idea, though, so you can get the size down a bit when traveling with the jacket.)

One thing to consider, is that, unlike a lot of puffers, it’s really not designed as a mid layer – you’re going to struggle to find a weatherproof shell layer that will comfortably fit over the top of this massive jacket. And while it has a degree of water repellency, it isn’t fully waterproof.

It does, however, continue to keep you warm, even when wet. And the extent of the thermal protection it offers means you don’t need to layer up underneath the Expedition Mid Winter Jacket – a decent base layer is all you really require.

Fjällräven Kajka 35 backpack: first impressions 

If Swedish brand Fjällräven is known for anything, it's for producing extremely high-quality, and expensive, gear. This hiking backpack is no exception. Built using a responsibly sourced birch (yes, meaning wooden) frame in place of aluminum, this backpack feels solid and luxurious the minute you pick it up, and for that reason, it's a little heavier than your average back too.

The main compartment is roomy enough for a light overnight backpacking trip, but thanks to the sleek design and compression straps, it's also totally functional for a day hike where you want to carry lots of layers and not worry about space.

Speaking of space, handy extra compartments abound with this pack. There are side pockets that are deep enough to securely hold your water bottle thanks to straps above them, zippered pockets on the hip belt that are big enough for your phone and a mesh pocket inside the main compartment. Then there's a roomy top lid with three zippered pockets that can be detached and used as a crossbody bag if you want to embrace some of that Skandi metro style when you get back to town.

One of the best features of this backpack, however, is the full front zipper which means you can lie it down on the ground and open it up like a duffel bag to find your gear – no more rummaging furiously on the trail.

One of the main ommissions of most backpacks is an integrated rain cover, but here you'll find yours neatly packed away inside a little pouch for those days when the weather won't play ball.

Thanks to ergonomic shoulder straps, a well-designed hip belt and plenty of foam padding, this backpack is a joy to wear mile after mile, even when it's loaded up. It's hydration bladder compatible and built using recycled polyamide so even though it's pricier and heavier than your average 35L pack, we can't help but sing its praises.

Fjällräven Kajka 35 backpack: in the field

"What lovely backpack is that you're wearing?" asked my friend Jack when we met for a hike in the Scottish Highlands recently, without even so much as a hello. I could understand why it was the first thing he noticed – after all, I was testing out the eye-catching UN blue.

That particular day, we went on a 16 km cross-country trek around Scottish lochs and over a low peak where we encountered at least three seasons, and I'd loaded this up for the first time with multiple layers as well as lunch and water for the day.

Since then, I've had it out on multiple day hikes as well as a weekend adventure to see if it's really as good as it looks.

Here’s how it performs:

Sizing, fit and comfort

This pack comes in two sizes: S/M and M/L, somewhat confusingly. Generally, Fjällräven says if you're under 5'6" tall you should choose the smaller of the two, and since I'm 5'4" there was no issue with sizing, but I can imagine if you fall right on that 5'6" line you might want to try on both. Whatever you choose, the back length can be adjusted, but I'm advised that the smaller version has narrower straps which makes it more comfortable if you're a narrower person.

In my experience, the pack sits perfectly, keeping the weight up high on my hips and off my shoulders, and if the lid pocket is loaded I can even lean my head back on it for an all-important standing-up nap.

I was a little unsure that this pack would really be comfortable because it's heavy and it has a wooden – yes wooden! – frame. My fears were quickly alleviated however when I pulled it on and discovered it's got foam padding in all the right places and thanks to the ergonomic design makes a heavy feel like nothing, even when I wear it all day.

Storage and fastenings

Personally, a 35L backpack is about the perfect size for most trips except of course for winter camping where you need more gear, and I'm always happy when I can get away with a pack of this size. The main compartment is big enough to hold my lightweight sleep system as well as a bit of extra clothing, and more than roomy enough for day hiking kit.

What really helps though is the astonishing number of handy extra pockets. The side pockets are big enough for my water bottle and trekking poles thanks to the straps above them, and the roomy lid can easily hold all those smaller pieces of gear like my headlamp and even my camping stove that I want to keep from rattling around. As for my phone and wallet, there are two spacious zipped pockets on the hip belt so everything is within easy reach.

Some backpacks in recent years have decided to get so futuristic with the fastenings that I've had to email the manufacturer to ask how they work, but this classic pack has embraced tradition (and practicality) with simple plastic buckles and toggles that are easy to use.

Durability, weather protection and other details

I have no questions at all that this is one tough, robust pack. The rugged Vinylon F fabric is undeniably hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant, so as pretty as this pack is, I don't bat an eye about battling through the brambles with it on my back. I honestly expect this to last for decades.

A light rain doesn't get through it, but for a heavy rain, it comes with its own rain cover and one of my biggest pet peeves is that more packs don't, so this is a huge bonus in my book.

That said, my absolute favorite feature of this bag is the full front zipper which means I can open the front like it's the top of a duffel bag. It means I can easily grab my waterproof jacket in a jiffy, even if I foolishly packed it at the bottom, and I love it.

Fjällräven Kajka 35: the bottom line

This is a beautiful backpack, there's no denying it, but that's hardly the point. It's tough, functional and comfortable and every detail has been carefully considered. It's big enough for short backpacking trips, but sleek enough to be a day pack.

That said, it comes at a hefty price and it is a little heavy for those wanting to move super fast and light through the mountains. If it's an ultralight design you're looking for, check out the 35L Patagonia Ascensionist which comes at half the price and half the weight.

Fjällräven, maker of some of our favorite daypacks and hiking pants, is opening a new UK store in Sheffield, giving you the chance to see and try gear yourself before you buy. The location in puts the new shop within easy reach of the rolling hills of the Peak District, in a city that many campers and hikers will use as a base.

The Charles Street shop, which opens its doors on March 22, will be Fjällräven's third store in the UK. It is a collaboration with outdoor clothing retailer The Sporting Lodge, and will give you the opportunity to ask for expert advice when choosing outdoor clothing and equipment.

Fjällräven has revamped its popular Abisko Friluft backpack just in time for hiking season, with a more ergonomic design, recycled materials, and a new size option.

The Abisko Friluft is one of Fjällräven's most popular large-capacity hiking backpacks, available in 35-liter and 45-liter versions, and the new version also comes in two sizes (S/M and M/L), so you can pick one that suits your body shape and size.

The company has updated the bag's shoulder straps and waist belt for a more comfortable fit during long expeditions, which is particularly important when carrying a heavily-laden pack, while keeping the original bag's mesh back panel. This allows air to circulate, helping avoid sweatiness as the temperature and humidity rise.

The revamped bag is now made using recycled 210B polyamide fabric for the body and recycled 500D polyamide for the base, and other recycled material for the lining to reduce reliance on virgin materials. To help it last longer, Fjällräven also offers a comprehensive care and repair guide so you can maintain your bag and other gear properly at home.

A large pocket on the front provides plenty of space to stash your waterproof jacket or windbreaker, or to keep muddy items separate from your clean gear and equipment. 

The new Fjällräven Abisko Friluft is available now, priced at $200/£225 for the 35-liter version, and $225/£250 for the 45-liter model. Prices are the same whether you pick S/M or M/L.

Fjällräven has revealed an updated version of its Kajka hiking backpack, with a lighter design and smaller carbon footprint.

The Kajka (a name taken from a Swedish word referring to carrying something) first launched in 2008 as a durable, large capacity aluminum-framed trekking backpack made with multi-day adventures in mind.

It included some unusual features, such as a main compartment that opened from the front so you could easily access your gear without rummaging through from the top, and a top lid that could be removed and attached to the chest strap. This could simply give you faster access to your phone and trail mix mid-hike, or be detached and worn as a cross-body or hip bag

It was well received and give years later, Fjällraven revamped the design with a new frame made from FSC-certified birch, which releases 90% less carbon during manufacturing and cut the bag's total carbon emissions by 10%.

Now the company has released the third iteration of the Kajka, making a further 18 changes. The wooden frame is now even lighter, and the shoulder straps are now more ergonomically designed for comfort during long treks. The hip belt is also more adjustable to suit different body types. There are new integrated side pockets too, with zips that open all the way around so you can access their contents from any angle.

Fjällraven says that the 2024 edition of the bag is also tougher and easier to repair, with a lining and reinforcements now made from recycled nylon.

The Kajka 2.0 comes in five sizes, and will be available to order from Fjällraven this spring.

Entries are now open for Fjällräven Polar, an epic 300km dog sledding expedition across the Scandinavian tundra, where temperatures can drop as low as -30°C. In April, 20 people from around the world will set out, each with their own dog sled team – and you could be among them.

Fjällräven Polar started in 1997 as a race inspired by Iditarod, the world's toughest dog sled competition, but in 2012 it was relaunched as a once-in-a-lifetime experience for ordinary people.

You will be accompanied by a group of experts, will be responsible for managing and feeding your six dogs, and learning essential survival skills in incredibly challenging conditions.

Fjällräven and Specialized first joined forces last summer to make a selection of equipment for expeditions on two wheels. The idea is that adventures don't have to happen in far-flung locales or involve weeks of planning, When you feel like taking a break, you can just throw some bags onto your bike and hit the trails.
