SunGod Miras: first impressions 

Unlike some other styles from SunGod, which are built for specific activities, these sunglasses are intended for everyday use. But as we've come to expected from the the Verbier-based brand, they're built for a certain degree of performance and actually make a decent pair of hiking sunglasses.

What sets the Miras apart from other styles is that they're built for people with small faces. Other than that, they're made from the same materials as the SunGod Tempests (except these frames are made using 100% recycled plastic, which is a huge upgrade for us) but have less performance-specific details.

The most noteworthy aspect of these shades when you put them in just how light they are. At a mere 20 grams, you can easily forget they're on your face and on a long hike, that's no bad thing. The frames are flexible and screw-free, so even though they feel a little flimsy, they can hold up to a little bit of pressure and a few drops. That said, what would really help is a hard case in place of the pouch that's included.

These sunglasses are 100% customizable, so you can pick between standard, polarized or SunGod's 8KO polarized lenses in a variety of colors and choose your preferred frame color while you're at it.

These shades are straightforward, comfortable and stylish for small faces, and a decent price for SunGods too. They're a good choice for travel or easy day hikes where you don't need anything too technical, like wraparound shades, as long as you don't try to pick up the pace  –  then they'll definitely slide down your nose.

SunGod Miras: in the field

It's always a bit of a risk agreeing to test sunglasses when you live in Scotland. Will I actually get any sun this summer? Answer: no, but fortunately I travel a lot, so I've been testing these in the Grape frame/Gold lens customization during several trips to the Alps this summer.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, comfort and staying power

I don't necessarily think of myself as having a small face, but photos taken with friends suggest otherwise and these glasses confirm it. They're just about perfect on me. I love the oversized sunglasses look for the city, but not for hiking so these make a better choice, and if you have an even smaller face than me then I think you'll be really happy with the sizing.

They are extremely comfortable to wear all day, and that includes when I was out in hot, sunny weather following the UTMB runners around the 106-mile course in Chamonix as well as several long hikes in the Swiss Alps. Basically, I don't even notice I'm wearing them and there's no pinching or pressure on my nose or ears.

Sometimes, that can mean that shades will slide down but these stay in place well for hiking, even with sunscreen on my face. That said, staying power has a lot to do with nose shape so I can't promise the same for you. As a test, I did try trail running with them in Chamonix and that did not work out at all, but they're not designed for running.

The only slightly funny thing that's worth noting is that they're so small that when I wore them with a trucker-style cap, if I pushed them up on my head they actually popped off, so you'll need to wear a lighter cap with these.

Visibility, cleaning and maintenance

As long as I've given these a good wipe with the pouch included, the lenses are super clear and I'm doing my best to not smudge or scratch them. 

I went with polarized lenses and they're great in really bright, high-glare situations, such as next to a lake, and a little dark in low-light situations such as the type we get here in Scotland, so I'll probably be saving these for my travels. Remember that the lenses are totally customizable so you can choose whatever you need. The frame is noticeable around the edges, but it's not huge so it doesn't block peripheral vision.

I own the SunGod Tempests, which I really love, but I find it quite hard to get those lenses completely clean, while these are better in that regard. I love having the cleaning pouch, but I'd also love a plastic case (my Tempests have recently lost a leg due to lack of hard case).

Durability and style

These sunglasses do feel a bit flimsy and while mine popped off the top of my head a few times and landed on the ground without so much of a scratch, I'm aware that I'll need to get a hard case soon before they come to grief. The flexible frames really do help with durability, and it's unlikely they'd break by being dropped but they need a bit more protection when they're inside my backpack.

I must say even though I'm usually a fan of an oversized frame, I do really like the slightly retro vibe of these sunnies, and am happy to keep them on when I get off the trail and back into town.

SunGod Miras: the bottom line

If you've been looking for a pair of SunGods that are suitable for hiking but not ultra-technical and come at a decent price, these are a great choice, though of course you also need a smaller face to wear them. They're featherlight, comfortable and protect your eyes and are made with lots of recycled content so you can feel happier about your choice. Buff 5-Panel Air Cap: first impressions

This lightweight running and hiking hat immediately reminded me of cycling caps, which are tight fitting and deliberately designed with small peaks to prevent them being blown off the wearer’s head by the wind while people are pedalling. I’m guessing Buff’s starting concept was broadly the same for this 5-Panel Air Cap, which can be pulled tight with a bungee and toggle at the back, and features a conspicuously small peak – a design with pros and cons, as we’ll see below. 

The other feature that immediately grabs the eye is the mesh material used across the head – the airy element referenced in the name – which also scores both negative and positive points.

Buff 5-Panel Air Cap: design and construction

Although minimalist and extremely lightweight, this is a well-made cap, with four panels of synthetic mesh securely stitched together to cover the head, a small but reliably rigid and relatively wide peak (which I assume counts as the fifth panel), an integrated sweatband and a smart cord-and-toggle fastening system at the back.

This cap has a unisex, one-size-fits-all design (which works thanks to the lace-style fastening system). About a third of the total material used is recycled.

I’ve been putting the 5-Panel Air Cap to the test, to see how it compares to the best running hats on the market.

Buff 5-Panel Air Cap: on the trails

I have been testing the 5-Panel Air Cap from Buff while running and rambling around the exposed coastal paths, beaches and hilltops of Dorset and Devon in southern England, in increasingly bright and sunny conditions, and with temperatures steadily rising.

For some people, even the best running sunglasses are uncomfortable or annoying to wear (and carry), and for them a cap is an obvious way to help keep the sun out of their eyes while they’re on the trail, track or road. A cap can also protect your eyes and the skin on your nose and upper face from the harmful effect of UV exposure. This protection is all dependent on the shading provided by the peak of the cap, however, and on Buff’s 5-Panel Air Cap, this is quite limited because the visor is notably small.

On the upside, I have been able to run in very windy conditions without worrying about losing this cap over the side of the vertiginous cliffs that line the South West Coast Path where I do most of my training. The bungee chord lace system at the back of the cap, which is tightened by a tiny toggle, allows me to get this cap securely positioned on my head, and the small visor doesn’t catch the wind.

The mesh used in the main body of the cap lets my head breathe beautifully as I run. When I work up a sweat the in-built absorbent band that runs around the inside of the hat soaks it up, and prevents perspiration from running painfully into my eyes.

I’m lucky in that I don’t have to worry about this (yet), but bald blokes should definitely be very careful about getting sunburned (or ending up with a very interesting tan pattern) on their heads, as this mesh offers little-to-no protection from solar rays. (This does rather make you wonder what it’s there for, but personally – from a style perspective – I think I’m far more likely to wear a cap over a visor or a headband, and I think I’m not alone in this preference.) Suffice to say, if this applies to you, be sure to apply sun screen to your head. Alternatively, you could wear a traditional Buff or similar underneath, but that would largely negate the breathable benefits of the cap.

The price tag does seem steep for a (mostly mesh) cap, I have to say, but this is a well-made piece of kit, and should last a long time. It’s also extremely lightweight, which is ultra useful. Conditions change a lot when you’re running and hiking, especially over longer distances, and this cap is very easy to stash in a daypack or hydration vest, to be pulled out or put away as required.

Smartwool Active Ultralite Headband: first impressions 

This running headband is designed to handle sweat and wayward hair on warm runs when you're not planning on wearing a hat to keep the sun off – think early morning and evening. Made using a blend of merino wool and lyocell, it's built to wick sweat away from your brow but will also add a little warmth if you pull it over your ears on a chilly day.

This headband only comes in one size, but it's designed with a stretch band that wraps around the base of your skull that makes it versatile across different head sizes and, because that section is narrower, makes it easy to wear with a ponytail.

We've tested this out on the trails of Scotland and Gran Canaria, and been impressed by how well it stays put, without being tight. You can wear it pulled back a bit to keep your hair out of the way, or pull it down over your forehead for sweat management without worrying about it itching.

The logo doubles as a reflective detail if you're wearing it for road running, and the wool blend means it's excellent at odor control. It's perhaps on the pricey end for a headband, and it is meant to be washed cold so you can't just chuck it in with any old wash, but it does its job well and is an excellent choice for lovers of merino.

Smartwool Active Ultralite Headband: in the field

Over the past three years, I've gradually lost all of my running headbands. I go out for a run wearing one, not so much to handle sweat but to keep my crazy hair from looking too mad, and when I get home it's no longer on my head. This headband arrived just in the nick of time and I've been wearing it on local trails here in Scotland as well as for some running during a recent hiking trip to Gran Canaria.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit

This headband only comes in one size, and I'm not aware of having a particularly large or small head, but it seems to fit me well, as in comfortable and snug but not too tight. I tried it on my boyfriend's head and it seems to fit him well too. I think the stretchy band that goes at the back helps make it pretty versatile. I've mostly been wearing it further back to handle my hair, but I can also pull it over my ears.

Comfort, temperature regulation and breathability

This headband is made using wool, but it's not the itchy kind and I don't end up having to scratch my head once I get sweaty. It's soft against my skin and wool does a nice job of managing sweat. That said, it also has insulating properties, so if I wear it out in the early morning before it's warmed up, I can pull it over my ears for warmth. It's also low profile, so it can add warmth without bulk under a running hat on winter days.

Odor control, durability and care

If you don't know, merino wool doesn't get stinky with sweat and that's obviously great for items like headbands. I haven't washed it yet and it still smells fine. Not minty fresh, but fine. 

The care instructions are to wash it cold with similar colors, and fortunately I tend to do all my clothes at 30 degrees so that's not an issue, but I can see it being a problem for anyone who uses a hot wash. Merino wool doesn't have the lasting power of synthetic materials, so I can see it degrading quicker if you wash it every time on hot, but since it doesn't get stinky easily, there's really no reason to do that.

This headband is comfortable, soaks up sweat and can even add a little warmth. With a low-profile, stay-put design, it's a handy accessory for anyone looking to keep hair out of the way or sweat out of their eyes. Buff Merino Active Beanie: first impressions 

Buff was born in Barcelona, a place where you don’t often go searching for a beanie, but founder Joan Rojas created their iconic tubular neckwear to keep himself warm on chilly motorcycle runs, it became a smash hit and now the brand has built a reputation as a leader for headgear. This beanie hat is the latest in their line of gear designed for those who keep hiking and running through all weather.

Because it’s designed for the active person, this hat strikes a great balance between cozy warmth and moisture management and it’s all thanks to the magic of merino wool. A medium weight and snug, stay-put fit means that it blocks a cold wind and keeps your head warm without being too tight or itchy. If it’s cold enough to need a hat for a winter trail run, once you break a sweat it does a great job of wicking moisture off your forehead, so you won’t find yourself needing to take it off after a few miles.

A laidback look means you’ll be happy wearing this around town as well as on a hill or on belay, and it’s versatile enough for cool to cold weather hikes as well as cold runs, making this a contender for your favorite hat. It comes at a premium price, owing to the ethically sourced merino no doubt, so you’d have to love it to buy it, and it’s hand wash only so a little higher maintenance than your regular hat, but bear in mind that you might wear it year-round and won’t get stinky with use.

Sizing and fit

This hat comes in one size, and on my head it feels right, but snug. As far as I’m aware I don’t have either a big or a small head, and since this isn’t the stretchiest fabric, I do wonder if it would be suitable for someone with a large head. For me, though, it’s comfortably snug so it stays put when it’s really windy at the summit, but it doesn’t get uncomfortable or leave me with weird marks on my forehead. 

I really like the fit. It’s not quite slouchy with loads of extra fabric, but it’s also not a total skullcap, and the turn up is wide enough to look great.

Comfort and temperature regulation 

Despite the wool content, this hat doesn’t get itchy, even when I get sweaty. It feels quite smooth against my skin, though like I said, it could be too tight if you have a larger head.

The blend of merino and synthetic materials seems to be perfect for temperature management, keeping me nice and warm recently when I was up a Munro in a biting wind, but when I wore it out on a chilly run I didn’t feel the need to take it off. That said, for cold trail runs I rarely wear a hat,preferring instead my Buff headband, but if you need something for really icy runs, this does perform under sweaty conditions.

Odor control and durability 

Synthetic materials can get smelly with use, but merino wool doesn’t and this one seems to have captured more of the merino properties when it comes to odor-control and mine still smells fresh. That’s good news, since it’s hand wash only and I’ll admit that means I’ll be less likely to wash it frequently.

It’s also good news because less washing should extend the lifespan of this hat, though that’s not something I am worried about. The knit isn’t prone to rubbing, pilling or pulling and without elastane, I’m not concerned about it losing its shape. I think this is one of those hats that will look as good as new until I inevitably, sadly, lose it. But I like it enough that I might sew my name and number into the lining…

Buff Merino Active Beanie: the bottom line 

If you expect a lot from your beanie hats – must perform well under aerobic duress in cold conditions, but also look good enough to wear to the bar afterwards – there’s a lot to like about this stylish, but surprisingly technical hat. That said, it comes at a fairly high price and if you’re prone to losing hats, you might want to spend a little less and can find similar performance and style for less spend in the Helly Hansen Wool Beanie.

Buff CrossKnit Headband: first impressions

When you don't want to slow down just because it's cold out, chances are your beanie will get too hot and you need a running headband to keep your ears warm, your forehead cool and hold your hair back. This knitted headband from Buff strikes a great balance between the sweaty demands of highly aerobic activity and cold weather. 

Made from knitted acrylic, it easily draws sweat of your forehead when you pick up the pace and breathes well once you start to sweat. It adds some insulation for cold days but is light enough to wear under a ski helmet as an added layer of protection or as a more breathable replacement for your hat on mild and cool hikes.

This stretchy headband isn't too tight which makes it easy to wear without getting a headache, but even though it isn't tight, it doesn't show signs of falling off and ending up in that big graveyard of lost headbands and gloves. It only comes in one size, but seems stretchy enough to fit most heads. The material is soft and doesn't itch, even when you start to feel warm.

It doesn't have a ponytail hole for those of you who like a low pony when you run, but we love the way it looks and think you'll be happy wearing it around town as well as on your runs. It's a little pricier than some headbands, but with its temperature regulating properties we think it's quite versatile for winter, spring and fall activities, plus it has high vis details for night running. It's hand wash only, and we're a little disappointed not to be able to just chuck it in the laundry, but so far it hasn't been stinky enough to need to.

Buff CrossKnit Headband: in the field

I love a headband for running, not so much because I get sweaty but more because my hair makes me look like an absolute maniac when I start galloping. I also often wear them for winter hikes instead of a hat and under my ski helmet. 

However, I have a problem: I can't stop losing them. I've come to accept that this is down to the shape of my head. As I run, they slowly slip back and fall off, then when I get home I look like Crusty the Clown and I'm $20 short. Last winter, I lost my beloved Smartwool headband and I've been upset about it ever since, so, I was extremely excited to receive this headband a month ago and get it out on the winter trails.

Here’s how it performs:  

Fit and comfort

This headband comes in one size and it seems to work alright for me. It's not tight, so I don't get a headache or weird red lines on my forehead after wearing it. In fact, I barely notice it on, but it also doesn't seem to slip off (I haven't lost it yet anyway) so I think it's ideal for my adventures. It doesn't seem to move around when I move, which reduces my chances of losing it.

It's really comfortable too, not only because it's not too tight but the material is soft and not at all scratchy. 

Temperature regulation

In a headband like this, I want some warmth for cold days but I don't want it to be so hot that I can't run with it, and this one seems to strike the perfect balance there. I've been wearing it on cold runs quite happily, and it's warm enough that I can wear it instead of a hat on hikes too. I'm not the sweatiest person in the world, but in my experiences it wicks sweat well and seems to dry really quickly too.

Durability and value

Though it looks and feels like wool, this is made from synthetic fabric so it's more durable, but if you want to keep it in good condition, don't do what I do and just shove it in your backpack or the fibers will get pulled. It is hand wash only which does add some maintenance, but I'm assuming that will keep it lasting longer and I haven't had to wash it yet despite multiple uses.

I think this is pretty good value. It's definitely pricier than some headbands I've tested but it's not just a circle of nylon to wrangle your hair. It helps to regulate temperature on the go and it's reasonably versatile too  – I can see myself wearing this in all seasons in Scotland.

If you're seeking a warm (but not too warm) headband that wicks sweat for cold weather aerobic activities like running, hiking and skiing, this lightweight, breathable piece of head gear is comfortable and looks great on. Helly Hansen Wool Beanie: first impressions 

A good beanie hat is crucial for anyone who wants to get outdoors year-round, but we all know that for such a simple piece of gear, it can be hard to find the perfect one. With this hat, Helly Hansen has gone all in on a simple design that works on a lot of heads. A simple fold up style adds warmth without bulk and a relatively snug fit means no extra fabric forming a meringue on the top of your head.

The key ingredient of this beanie is merino wool, which is warm and breathable, wicking moisture when you’re clambering up a steep slope so you don’t have to take it off on a cold day. It has all the benefits of wool without being itchy against your forehead, even when you get warm. It’s relatively light and low profile without being too thin and stays put in high winds without being too tight.

We’ve been testing this out in the mountains all winter and rarely get too warm in it, plus we love that its classic style and lack of giant logo which means we can wear it around town too. Merino wool doesn’t come cheap, so in terms of beanie hats it’s on the pricey side, and requires special laundry detergent, but so long as you don’t lose it, we think you’ll be happy with your purchase if you love merino. 

Helly Hansen Wool Beanie: in the field 

I’m a person that wears a beanie year-round, up a hill, in the house, on cool summer days as well as in winter, so I am always looking for that perfect hat and I have to admit, it’s a challenge. Some are too bulky and itchy, others have loads of extra material that sticks up making me look like a garden gnome, and my all-time favorite slouchy beanie blows away in the wind. I’ve been wearing this hat exclusively for three months now on hikes and around town.

Here’s how it performs:  

Sizing and fit 

This hat comes in one standard size and it’s perfect for me – snug enough to stay put but not too tight – and also on my boyfriend. I can imagine there are some exceptionally dimensioned craniums out there that this wouldn’t work for, but in general I think it’s a good fit for the majority of heads.

It’s got a snug fit – not slouchy, but also not skullcap-style and when I pull it all the way down it comes to the very top of my eyebrows which is nice if there’s a biting wind at a summit, but I usually push it back a little for comfort. It’s also not so bulky that I can’t easily pull up my hood when I’m wearing it.

It’s really flattering on, too, which means I’ve taken to wearing it around town as well as on a hike.

Comfort 

Speaking of comfort, this beanie is 100 percent merino wool. For me, that means it’s pretty comfortable against my skin and doesn’t itch. That said, if you’re sensitive to wool, and even merino, obviously this might itch and you’ll probably prefer a hat made from acrylic or fleece. It’s not as soft and comfortable as those fabrics, but I am able to wear it for hours on end without having to take it off and stuff it in my backpack because my forehead itches. 

Temperature regulation 

I think temperature regulation is where this hat excels for me. It’s definitely cozy on a really cold day, and we’ve had a lot of them this winter. That said, it’s not too thick and I don’t get too hot in it when I get sweaty on a cold hike. It’s got good breathability on those days and wicks sweat nicely. 

Odor control and durability 

Being made from merino wool, I’ve been wearing this non-stop for three months without washing it and it smells fine, which is good because I can’t be bothered washing it separately using wool detergent. In terms of durability, I wouldn’t say that it looks brand new anymore. It looks like a hat I’ve been wearing and carrying in my pack for a few months, but there’s no annoying loose yarn or pilling going on. 

Helly Hansen Wool Beanie: the bottom line 

If you are willing to part with a little extra cash for a classic-looking hat that harnesses the magical powers of merino wool then this is the hat for you. If wool doesn’t work for you but you need something really toasty for cool days, you can save a little money with the Helly Hansen Logo Cuff Beanie made from acrylic.

Columbia Lost Lager II Beanie: first impressions

Congratulations to Columbia for the most intriguing name for a hat I’ve ever encountered – Columbia Lost Lager II is a moniker we assume came about during a Friday afternoon ‘ideas’ session in the local watering hole, after someone misplaced their drink for the second time. 

I’d be tempted to buy this beanie based on the name alone, but it also has some pretty decent attributes that make it a useful head warmer during outdoor pursuits ranging from winter hill hiking and trekking to various snow sports (although it’s better suited for après ski / boarding wear than when you’re actually on the slopes, for reasons I’ll go into below). 

Pleasingly made from 100% recycled polyester, the Lost Lager II Beanie is available in a veritable rainbow of attractive colors – although, for some reason, the options do vary according to what side of the Atlantic you are on, with the US site offering a larger range, while UK customers have a slightly more limited selection of pastel hues. 

To find out how it measures up to the best cold weather head gear and hiking hats on the market, I pulled it over my ears and went adventuring.

Columbia Lost Lager II Beanie: in the hills

I’ve been wearing the Columbia Lost Lager II Beanie while hiking in the French Alps during the past fall, and walking around the hills, tors and trails of South West England in the midst of winter, and it’s been keeping my head and ears wonderfully warm.

This large beanie comes in one size only, and the fit is relaxed, as befits the laid-back après snow sport style Columbia are aiming for; it’s far too chunky to be worn under a helmet, so is definitely designed for wear once you’ve finished on the slopes. 

Beyond winter sport resorts, it can also be worn while hiking in the hills and winter trekking – but it’s a relatively heavy hat to carry around when you’re not using it. With a reasonably modest-sized brand logo on the front, the Lost Lager II beanie comes down over your ears, and can be rolled down to cover your entire head and face if you so wish (so long as you don’t mind behind apprehended as a potential bank robber). 

Admirably it’s made entirely from recycled synthetic material (rescued polyester), which is both good for the planet, and also means it retains its considerable thermal properties even if you get it wet. The Lost Lager II Beanie doesn’t have an inner lining, and won’t keep your noggin dry, but will keep it extremely warm.

Sungod Tokas: first impressions

SunGod is best known for its sports sunglasses, including models designed specifically for cycling and running, but the Tokas (available direct from SunGod) are a new design made for in between your outdoor adventures. That said, they're still super resilient, and can easily handle some hiking and running as well.

At first glance, the square-framed Tokas look similar to the SunGod Tempests, but comparing the two the Tokas are noticeably lighter (just 25g) with a slimmer frame design. That's impressive considering the Tempests certainly aren't heavy.

The Tokas' frame is made from 100% recycled memory polymer, which will spring back into shape without snapping if bent – and they don't bend easily.

As with all SunGod shades, you can take your pick from various frame and lens colors, and pick either standard polycarbonate or tougher, clearer 8KO nylon for the lens material.

You can upgrade to polarized lenses for an extra fee (see our guide to polarized vs non-polarized sunglasses for a rundown of the differences). My review pair have polycarbonate lenses with polarization. All lenses feature triple-layer scratch-resistance and 100% UV protection.

SunGod also offers prescription lenses for prescriptions ranging from +8.00 to –7.00. These are available in standard and thin options (people with strong prescriptions are encouraged to opt for the thinner option), and with or without polarization

A hard case is available as an optional extra, which is a little surprising at this price point but the Tokas are supplied with a soft pouch to protect against scuffs and scratches and it reduces waste if you already have a case that you're happy with from a previous pair of shades and don't need a replacement.

Sungod Tokas: on the trails

The Tokas are so comfortable and versatile, I ended up wearing them for pretty much everything this summer.

Although designed mainly as lifestyle shades, I found the Tokas great for hiking and occasional running too. They don't provide the same wrap-around protection as the SunGod Ultras for long races and training sessions, but if you're looking for a single pair of sunglasses for the streets, the trails and everything in between, the Tokas are a good middle ground – light and secure, but not overtly sporty.

The Tokas are unisex sunglasses designed for wearers with medium or large heads, and I'd agree with that assessment; I have a relatively large head, and they fit well, providing good coverage from brow to cheekbone.

Despite their light weight, they don't look at all 'cheap' and feel super secure even during runs. Their ear pieces and nose bridge are well shaped to keep them firmly in place without any uncomfortable pressure points, even when things get warm and sweaty. The screwless hinges are tough too, folding with a pleasing click.

Visibility is excellent, even with the standard polycarbonate lenses, with great clarity. The polarizing coating really cuts down on glare, and will come in particularly handy if you're spending any time near water, whether that's fishing, boating, or paddleboarding.

People with smaller or narrower heads might be better served by the SunGod Classics, which are medium rather than medium/large, but for anyone else the Tokas are an excellent option that'll avoid the need to carry multiple pairs of shades on vacation or multi-day adventures.

Sealskinz Salle Cap: first impressions

The Sealskinz Salle Cap (available direct from Sealskinz) is part of the company's first full range of waterproof clothing, which launched in July 2023. As you'd expect from Sealskinz, the cap is waterproof, designed to keep your head dry when you don't want to wear (or don't have to hand) a full waterproof jacket.

There are men's and women's versions listed online, but they're actually the same size, so you can pick whichever you prefer. The women's options include a wide range of attractive pastel colors (including mint, shown here), while the men's range includes brighter shades and camo options.

All Salle hats are constructed from a three-layer fabric, with a waterproof membrane in between the robust outer and inner breathable mesh layers. They have a particularly long bill, which helps keep water and sun out of your eyes, and a generous fit that can be adjusted at the back using a side-release buckle.

The Salle Cap's most interesting feature, however, is its folding brim, which allows it to pack down small enough to stuff into a jacket pocket, or the side pocket of your hiking backpack.

Sealskinz Salle Cap: on the trails

I used the Sealskinz Salle Cap for both hiking and running during the particularly wet August of 2023, and was thoroughly impressed by its performance. 

The Salle Cap isn't marketed for running, but I usually wear a baseball hat when I need to train in the rain (waterproof running jackets have an unpleasant sous-vide effect once you're warmed up), so I was keen to see how it would perform.

The folding design is excellent. The bill is very sturdy, with a flexible hinge down the center that locks open when the hat is unfolded. It's is nice and roomy but easily adjustable thanks to the rear clip, which keeps it firmly in place even when the wind picks up. No worries about chasing it down the street during a sudden gust.

The outer brushed nylon layer did eventually wet out during an exceptionally heavy downpour, meaning water stopped beading, but it never penetrated the middle waterproof membrane and my hair remained dry underneath. I really appreciated the long brim, which did an excellent job of keeping water out of my eyes (particularly important for me as a contact lens wearer). Despite the three-layer waterproofing I never found the hat too hot. either. 

After the run, the brushed nylon had some water marks, but as instructed by Sealskinz I threw it in the washing machine at 30C, and it came out looking good as new. Doing this won't compromise the waterproof membrane, and makes life a lot easier than having to use wash-in waterproofing each time the hat needs cleaning. I was also pleased to see that the brim didn't get bent at all during the washing process.

All in all, I've found it nearly impossible to fault the Sealskinz Salle Cap. The only potential issue is that the single size might be too large for hikers and runners with small heads; I'm 5'10" with a head to match and found it perfect, but a smaller person might find it too deep.

Now that I've finished testing the review sample, I'll be investing in my own to keep tucked into the side pocket of my backpack. The only decision is which color.

Arc’teryx Paltz Cap: first impressions 

At first glance, this cap appears like just another hiking hat or running hat, but once we got it out on the trail, we discovered a lot to like about it. The softshell fabric repels wind and moisture well, yet is really comfortable thanks to its breathability, stretch, and a moisture-wicking panel that sits against your forehead. An adjustment at the back allows you to cinch it tighter on a breezy day, and it manages to stay put in most conditions without giving you a headache or leaving a red mark.

The peak is long enough to keep the sun off your face on bright days, but not long enough to get caught and carried away easily by a big gust of wind, while if you’re wearing this in rainy conditions it improves your visibility and it dries quickly afterwards. Unlike a lot of peaked hats, it folds up nicely when you’re traveling or want to shove it in your backpack. Here’s the caveat though – this is a seriously pricey running hat, you need to make sure you love it as much as we do before you buy it. And don’t lose it, whatever you do.

Arc’teryx Paltz Cap: first impressions 

I got this hat to test out at the Arc’teryx Alpine Academy and I did so dutifully, but without thinking I’d have much to say about it. It's just a hat, right? I’ve since worn it for alpine hiking, Scottish hiking and trail running.

Here’s how it performed:  

Sizing and fit 

This hat comes in two sizes, and I tested the smaller size which fits great, mostly thanks to an adjustable pull tab at the back which cinches it tight. It’s not your modern day big boxy trucker hat, but has a lower profile that comes down low enough to secure your ponytail, and a flattish but not-too-big brim.

Comfort and breathability

This hat is really comfortable, thanks to it not being too tight and a sweat-wicking band that sits against my forehead. I can wear this on a six hour hike and have no headache or red mark on my forehead afterwards. I’ve mostly been wearing it for damp and rainy conditions, but never noticed myself overheating in it, even when I’m on a longer trail run.

Weather protection

When I lived in Colorado, I wouldn’t venture out on a hike without a cap to keep the ferocious sunlight off my skin, but I must admit that with the lack of intense sunlight here in Scotland, I’ve sometimes left my hat at home and just used sunscreen. What this hat has taught me, however, is that running and hiking hats can also be a great defense against the rain.

I wore it on a hike that started out sunny, then turned to very rainy, and I was really pleased with how much protection I got from this, plus it dries quickly afterwards. I think part of its success lies in the brim, which is neither too wide nor too stiff. This means that I get the shade I need, but the wind doesn’t whisk it off my head. Actually, it has blown off my head precisely once, at the top of a Munro, but if you know Scottish weather you’ll know that’s pretty impressive.

Weight and packability

This hat is really light but I'd say most such hats are lightweight. What I like about it though is its packability. It folds or rolls up nicely in my backpack which can be an issue with a lot of peaked caps. This makes it a good choice for travel as well as hiking and running.

Value

This is definitely a super pricey piece of gear and even though I'm all for gear being built to last and paying more to ensure that, I can't honestly say I'd willingly fork out $70 for a hiking hat. Mostly, I'd be terrified that it gets blown away on a summit or dropped on the trail, which would turn a common hiking incident into a very expensive day, indeed. 

One thing I'd say in defense of the price tag is that you can wear it for both hiking and running, so it does serve multiple purposes, but you could probably say the same for lots of hats. If you love Arc'teryx, I can see why you'd want to get your hands on this hat and you'll really like it, but take good care of it whatever you do.

SunGod Velans: first impressions

A more technical pair of shades than the SunGod Sierras, the SunGod Velans (available direct from SunGod) are designed for a slightly wider face shape, and they provide protection from the side. More performance orientated than fashion focussed, they are among the best sunglasses for hiking and mountain activities. 

The Velans have 8KO spherical lenses in plastic, flexible frames. The frames come with a lifetime adventureproof guarantee, so any breakages to them will be replaced free of charge. You can also choose from just top frames, full frames or a system that lets you swap between both.

There’s a wide range of lens choices available with a full spectrum of visible light transmissions (VLT) ratings, so you can customize these sunglasses to suit your needs. The price is very much dictated by the lens and style you end up choosing, so different prices for ostensibly the same model are possible. While the weight of the glasses is low, the price tag is fairly heavy.

SunGod Velans: on the trails

I tested these sunglasses with category 3 polarized lenses, but other lenses are available in category 2, 3 or photochromic in a variety of tints. Other colors are also available – in fact, this product can be customized to pretty much whichever color you like, making a pair of sunglasses that are very much your own.

On test I found that the wraparound style of the SunGod Velans provided great visibility and excellent protection from glare, especially in snow and ice. That said, the sizing is quite large and may overwhelm narrower faces. 

Being able to customize to your exact tastes is always a nice touch, as is the frame guarantee. I’ve had these sunglasses for over a year and they haven’t broken under regular use, although one arm has become a bit wobblier than the other. It would be nice to have a case included, however, and that addition might save SunGod money on their guarantee.

Ive worn these sunglasses up alpine peaks and down country lanes. If you choose your lenses wisely (I was wearing Cat 3 lenses, at the very lowest end of its VLT range) they can cover you for summer snow as well as countryside hikes.

Scott Vector Sunglasses: first impressions

Among the best sunglasses for hiking and mountain adventures, Scott's Vector sunglasses are a comfortable, close-fitting pair of shades, with Fusion frames and no-slip soft nose pads. The frame has some flex in it but feels very sturdy and has rubber-coated tips at the end of the arms to help keep the sunglasses in place. 

The lenses are large for this style of sunglasses, but they don’t have quite as much height as a lens in, say a classic round frame. The Vectors are available with a range of lens options, all with the Scott Precision Optics quality label. 

The Red Chrome lenses are category 3, and have a VLT (visible light transmission) rating of 10%, which makes them a little on the dark side for some activities, such as driving on cloudy days. 

There are narrow slits at the top and side of each lens to help improve airflow and stop the glasses from steaming up. They have 100% UV protection, but they are not polarized. 

Scott Vector Sunglasses: on the trails

These sunglasses came with me on my Winter Mountain Leader Training in the Cairngorms. Unsurprisingly, it was not particularly sunny in the Highlands of Scotland in January, but it was still quite bright, and the course required us to spend a lot of time looking at blank snow slopes close up. 

These sunglasses provided just the protection I needed from the midday light passing through the clouds and reflecting off the snow. No need to squint, a good snug fit and very good clarity. 

The demisting vents really helped too when I was wearing them underneath helmet straps, in situations where taking them off and on again to clear my vision would have been an absolute faff.

Bollé Adventurer sunglasses: first impressions

These premium-priced Bollé Adventurer sunnies are, as the name suggests, designed specifically for adventure pursuits. High performers, they are among the best sunglasses around for hill-hiking and mountaineering, but can be a tad dark for driving and low-level wear in anything but the brightest conditions.

Designed with the frame shape of classic glacier sunglasses, they come with either photochromic Phantom lenses or Solace4, Bollé’s new mineral glass lens designed specifically for the mountains (Category 4). There are three choices of color for the mineral lens frames (black, white or dark green) but only black for photochromic version. The lenses have great optic clarity and anti-fog features, as well as supplying 100% UV protection. 

The frames of these sunglasses incorporate built-in side shields and a bridge piece. Unlike other available models on the market, these side shields do not fold down or come off. 

The Thermogrip nosepieces are adjustable to fit the shape of your face, however, and they are hydrophilic, which in theory makes them grippier in wet and sweaty conditions. Thermogrip is also used on the tips for a more comfortable fit. 

A cord leash is provided, with holes in the frame, at the end of the arms, to attach it to, and they come with a handy protective case and a microfiber pouch.

Bollé Adventurer sunglasses: on the trails

These Bollé Adventurers came up north with me to England’s Lake District and the Cairngorms in Scotland and quickly proved themselves ideal sunglasses for hiking.

They are a lightweight pair of glasses, but still feel sturdily built. Having side shields that don't need to be folded was a good for use in the mountains, and I found the side coverage around the eyes to be decent.

The lenses are large and provide good visibility. Having photochromic lenses allows you to use one pair of sunglasses for all situations. Not being able to remove the side shields does mean you can’t convert to a more “normal” look for post-adventure social wear, but they are fantastic as an all-round pair of mountain sunglasses. Just make sure you know how to clean sunglasses the right way so you don’t damage them.

Like several other models I've tested from different brands, the Bollé Adventurers left a gap around the bridge of my nose, allowing light through. However, as someone with a small face, this was the best fit I'd had in the classic glacier glasses style. I also really appreciated the coloration in the lenses; the rosy tint made everything look better – especially in snowy conditions.

BLOC Eyewear Pilot Sunglasses: first impressions

The versatility and general functionality of the BLOC Eyewear Pilot Sunglasses earned them a spot in our roundup of the best sunglasses for hiking and mountaineering, but they do have their limitations.

Found at a fairly pocket-friendly price – comparatively speaking – these sunnies are metal-framed, aviator-style glasses, about the size of a pair of average reading spectacles. This is a less sporty look, which suits social wear as well as active use on trails and hillsides.

Available in category two and category three versions, and in a wide range of colors, the BLOC Pilots can be worn on sea-level walks, hill hiking adventures and in the peaks up to a point, but they are not suitable for high-altitude mountaineering. 

There is no case included, but they do come with a cloth pouch that offers some protection from accidental scratching.

BLOC Eyewear Pilot Sunglasses: on the trails

I trialled a category three version of the BLOC Eyewear Pilot Sunglasses over several weeks of walking and winter mountaineering on the west coast of Scotland. On test I found they felt lightweight and minimalist on my face, and the metal frames are very smooth, making it easy to get them on and off.

Although the frame materials do not seem to have much give in them at all, the nose pads are adjustable, allowing some flexibility in fit, and are also hypoallergenic. Having a small point of contact helps to reduce sweat, and I could feel plenty of airflow getting to my face as I hiked and scrambled, which meant the glasses didn’t steam up.

The impact-resistant XTR Karbon8 optical class one lenses provide good clarity and protection, and I found them to be pretty effective at blocking glare, but, because of their style, they are quite small and there is no side coverage to block out excessive light in very bright situations (learn more about why you need to protect your eyes on the trails in our sunglasses for hiking feature).

The only quirk is that at certain angles of light, other people can sometimes see your eyes through the lens – or, weirder for them, one of your eyes is visible, while the other remains hidden behind the reflective surface.

The three-star rating is due to durability. Within a few months, one of the arms had broken off at the hinge. Although the metal itself is durable, the hinges are a weak point – only minor squishing in a rucksack caused the arm to snap off at its join to the lens frame, just next to the hinge.

SunGod Sierras: first impressions

Specifically designed for the needs of the modern adventurer, SunGod's Sierras sunglasses are among the best sunglasses available for hikers and peak scramblers, although there’s no protection for your eyes at the sides.

Sierras sunglasses with less-expensive 4KO non-polarized lenses start at £70, with the 8KO polarized lenses being the premium, pricier offering. The 8KO lenses have fantastic clarity and depth of color. (For more information see: polarized vs non-polarized sunglasses: which do you need?)

The frames are very flexible and light. Pop-Lock hinges mean there are no screws to come loose. (Note: the adventureproof guarantee that SunGod are famous for only covers the frames.) The Sierras frames are good for small to medium size faces, so if you have a wider face you may want to consider the SunGod Velans instead. 

SunGod Sierras sunglasses: on the trails

The SunGod Sierras are a great all-rounder pair of sunglasses for someone with an active lifestyle, and I’ve been wearing them for pretty much everything, from climbing mountains to popping to the shops. 

They are a good, comfortable fit for a small face and the unobtrusive style doesn't look out of place when you’re off the trail. 

Although it is really excellent to be able to essentially build your own pair of sunglasses, they do feel a little on the expensive side for what you get. And at over £100, it would be nice to have a case included – even with the lifetime guarantee to protect them.

Oakley Clifden sunglasses: first impressions

Classic-style sunglasses, designed and made with mountaineering firmly in mind, Oakley Clifden sunnies are among the best sunglasses for high-level hiking and peak climbing. 

These are the only frame style in Oakley’s range that have the removable side shields required for high-altitude protection. That said, the Prizm Deep Water lenses are a Category 3 – although other lower VLT lenses are available, including Category 4, which is more suitable for high alpine adventures (although not recommended for driving).

The frame and lenses are lightweight, with some flex in the frame itself. The side shields are easy to take on and off and the wide bridge effectively reduces light access to the eyes.

The rubber-like material of the shields and nose pads help to make a secure but comfortable fit around the face. But you can’t help but have a little giggle that they’ve called this patented material Unobtainium, a nod to the Avatar movies. 

These sunglasses are available in a range of six color and lens combinations, with lenses designed to enhance the color, contrast and detail of whatever you’re looking at. 

The hard case and woven metal cord (with closed attachment points at the end of each arm) are great touches. Plus the possibility of a prescription lens will be very welcome for many users. 

Oakley Clifden sunglasses: on the trails

On test I found the Oakley Clifden sunnies to be a great-feeling pair of sunglasses – extremely comfortable, with good-sized lenses for top levels of visibility. 

The side shields are comprehensive and reliably protective in bright and glare-filled conditions, such as on mountainsides, but they are also removable, so you can take them out in situations where they feel like an overkill feature.

The frame is flexible but strong, too, although I'm a little surprised they are quite so expensive (you certainly pay for the Oakley name as well as the excellent performance levels).

However, in a similar way to the Vuarnet ICE Round sunglasses, I do find small spots of sunlight sneaking through at the bridge, around my nose. The Oakleys are closer to a good fit for me, but while I’m working on the assumption that this gap is occurring because of my face shape – and not because the glasses have a high bridge – it’s worth bearing in mind if you too have a smaller face.

Vuarnet ICE Round sunglasses: first impressions

From the moment you open the box, these Vuarnet ICE Round sunnies feel like a premium product, and they certainly rank among the very best sunglasses out there for high-level hiking and mountaineering.

Like a classic watch, these sunglasses are clearly designed to last a long time and to be used year upon year as the only pair of sunglasses you’ll ever need in the snow or at altitude. (Obviously you wouldn’t go for a Cat 4 lens for everyday use, as they're too dark – our comprehensive guide to VLT levels explains the different VLT categories.)

The frames are made of high-strength bio nylon with adjustable sleeves that can be bent into place to fit your head. The sun protection is excellent: there are removable side shields that are easy to slide in and out. The bridge has an insert piece that can be taken out too, allowing the Vuarnet ICE Round sunglasses to be converted into a more everyday look for off the mountains.

The lenses are a natural mineral lens that provide the sharpest vision possible in extreme light conditions. They feel like a very strong material compared to other sunglasses I’ve tested. There is a choice of 11 color and lens combinations, including both Cat 3 and Cat 4 options. My test pair are Matt Black Eclipse.

They come in a stylish white leather protective case with attachment loop, which includes a microfiber cleaning cloth, and there’s a two-year warranty, too. 

Vuarnet ICE Round sunglasses: on the trails

These sunglasses feel expensive. They are noticeably heavier than any other pair I've tried, and the weight is all in the lenses. You know they mean serious business as soon as you put them on your face, and they can certainly perform at the highest level at the pointy end of mountain terrain. 

The Vuarnet ICE Round sunglasses are marketed as being sized medium. As someone with a smaller face, I found that the bendable area on the arms meant that they didn’t fall off when I leaned forwards – but only just.

On test I found that a tiny spot of daylight did sneak in through the frame, in the T-shaped indent at the top of the nose (and if you don’t know why this is a bad thing, read our feature on sunglasses for hiking: why you need to protect your eyes on the trails). Again, the pair I tested are designed for a medium fit.

Despite this slight annoyance, overall I was very impressed with the clarity and quality of these sunglasses, especially the mineral glass lenses.

It's easy to think that you don't need a pair of the best sunglasses for your hiking adventures during the colder months. However, while the levels of UV are lower in winter and early spring due to the tilt of the Earth, your eyes are still vulnerable, making decent shades essential.

On top of this, if you're someone who ventures above the snow line, the best sunglasses are absolutely vital. This is because pristine snow reflects UV light, virtually doubling the intensity that reaches your eyes. As UV rays can damage your eyelid, cornea, lens and retina and it's not damage that will ever heal, protecting your eyes is clearly important.

Besides, let's not forget, sunglasses also look cool! This guide features a mix of both Category 3 and Category 4 lenses. Cat 3 lenses have you covered for most of the places you'd venture in your hiking boots, while Cat 4 lenses – which aren't suitable for driving – are for extreme environments, such as desserts or high altitude.

We've tested these 10 excellent pairs on coastal trails and mountain ridges to bring you this expert guide. We rate the Scott Vector Sunglasses as the finest pair for their strong flexible frame and secure fit.

The best sunglasses overall

Our expert tester Emily rated the Scott Vectors as the top pair of shades in our roundup, thanks to their supreme comfort. Meanwhile, the Fusion frame and no-slip soft nose pads give them a really secure, close fit. While the frame has at least some flex, Emily commented that it "feels very sturdy and has rubber-coated tips at the end of the arms to help keep the sunglasses in place". 

For the style, the lenses are admittedly large yet, compared to a traditional round frame, they're not as high. There are a range of lens options available and all come with the Scott Precision Optics quality label. The Cat 3, Red Chrome lenses Emily tested receive plenty of airflow, thanks to the narrow slits at the top and side of each lens. This stops them from fogging up during periods of exertion. As you'd expect, they boast full UV protection but it's worth bearing in mind that they're not polarized.

The best sunglasses for lightweight performance

Versatility is the order of the day when it comes to the SunGod Tempests. Our expert tester Julia reckons they're a great shout for the trails but also states that "they won’t look out of place worn at a sunny sidewalk cafe or at the beach either".

They boast a lightweight, comfortable fit that stays in places, negating the need to push them back up every 10 minutes on the trail. This is aided by a grippy nose pad. These design features are crucial for hiking shades, as it stops them falling off during sections of scrambling. On days when the sun is bright and brilliant, the 8KO lenses provide full protection.

Not only this, the Tempests are reasonably price, have resistance to scratches and they didn't fog up no matter how strenuous our activities. The frames are soft and flexible, while being made from recycled content that doesn't break easily. They come with a soft, microfiber pouch to carry and clean them. The lifetime warranty means you can expect to wear them for many years and you can also customize the lens and frames to suit your vibe.

The best sunglasses for customization

Intended for the modern adventurer and boasting a shape and style that suits the office, the commute and the beer garden, as well as mountain trails, the SunGod Sierras are great all-rounders. As we've come to expect from SunGod, there's plenty of customization options when it comes to frame color, lens type and polarization.

Our tester Emily found that the frames were "very flexible and light" during the test, while Pop-Lock hinges mean no screws waiting to come loose. There's the premium offering of the 8KO lenses, which give excellent clarity and color depth, while the 4KO non-polarized lenses come in a little cheaper.

The best sunglasses for mountaineering

Designed with mountaineering in mind, Oakley's Clifden sunglasses sport peformance alongside a classic style. Their mountaineering intent is underlined by the fact that these are the only frames in Oakley's arsenal that boast removable side shields, the sort needed for protection at altitude.

Our expert reviewer Emily tested the Prizm Deep Water Cat 3 lenses, though lower VLT lenses are also available, which take the Clifdens into the realms of Cat 4. The overal package is lightweight, with flexibility in the frames.

Emily reported that she "found that the rubber-like material of the shields and nose pads help to make a secure but comfortable fit around the face". It's quite funny that Oakley have named this material Unobtainium, just like in the Avatar film series. There are half a dozen color and lens configurations available, with various contrasts and detail levels available. For those who value prescription lenses, these are also on offer.

The best sunglasses for clarity

The Velans are designed for a wider face shape than SunGod's Sierras and boasts spherical 8KO flexible lenses with the brand's lifetime guarantee, which excludes theft, loss or scratches but breakages will be replaced free of charge.

The clue is in the name. The Bollé Adventurer sunglasses are intended for adventurous souls. They take inspiration, in terms of shape, from classic glacier glasses and come with a choice of photochromic Phantom lenses or Solace4, Bollé’s new mineral glass lens intended specifically for the mountains (Category 4). 

On test, our reviewer Emily found that "these lenses had great optic clarity and anti-fog", while they also boast 100% UV protection, as we'd expect. Unlike many of the mountaineering glasses in this guide, the side shields don't fold down and they can't be removed. There's adjustability in the Thermogrip nose pieces, which means you can tailor the fit to the shape of your face. Thermogrip is also used on the tips for that comfortable, secure fit.

The best sunglasses for versatility

With multiple lens and frame color options, Tifosi’s Swick sunglasses manage to be "both super stylish and completely unpretentious looking" according to our expert tester Pat. They manage to do this while also being hugely functional for use on the trails. On test, Pat found that they were perfectly comfortable, while the flexible and robust nylon Grilamid TR-90 Frame kept them very much in place no matter what activities he got up to. Whether hiking, biking or running, they were enjoyable to wear.

The grip the nose pads supply increases the more the wearer sweats, thanks to their hydrophilic qualities. Meanwhile, to reduce bounce, there's glide coating on the arms. The lenses are polycarbonate, scratch-resistant and shatterproof, with a Cat 3 rating. This makes them suitable for exploring from sea level up to low alpine regions. The best budget Cat 4 sunglasses

Sometimes you don’t want to jump in at the deep end and buy an expensive or high-tech piece of kit. Maybe you’re just testing the water in an activity or can’t justify the high cost, even if the product might last you a lifetime. If that’s you, the very reasonably priced Quechua range of sunglasses may well be what you’re looking for. What’s better is that budget doesn’t necessarily mean cheap and nasty – we found that these sunglasses performed very well on test. 

The Quechua have all the basic features covered. We thought the wraparound frame is a close fit and, although the lenses are quite small, our vision wasn't impeded. The polycarbonate lenses block 100% UV light and are polarized. Although they are very shock resistant, they are also quite prone to scratches. This model is rated Category 4, with very dark lenses designed for exceptionally strong sunlight (high mountains), absorbing between 92% and 97% of visible light. If you’re not adventuring at this level and want a less dark lens, Decathlon’s Quechua range also has sunnies with Category 3 dark lenses designed for strong sunlight (sea and mountains), which absorb between 82% and 92% of visible light.

The frame is made of a bio-sourced polymer and is quite stiff, which could become uncomfortable with all-day use at the end of the arms and on the nose pads. Having an elasticated leash is a great addition, which is easy to take on and off as you wish. The sunglasses also have a two-year guarantee.

The best budget sunglasses for style

Metal-framed and in the aviator style, BLOC's Pilot shades are around the size of a pair of reading glasses and come at a decent price. They're undoubtedly less sporty looking than most on offer, so they make for a versatile pair that can be worn in the mountains and in the city. Lightweight and minimal, the frame doesn't have as much give as others in this guide. The hypoallergenic nose pads are adjustable, allowing for flexibility in terms of fit. This small point of contact helped to reduce sweat and our tester Emily found that there was plenty of air flow. 

This pair of BLOC Pilots are in Category 3, but other lenses available if you’d prefer Category 2. There is no case, but they do come with a cloth pouch that offers some protection from accidental scratching. Emily goes on to say that "the lenses are effective but quite small due to the style and there is no side coverage to block out excessive light". So, they're not really suited to the high mountains.

How to choose the best sunglasses

There are myriad lens options out there, so here are some important questions to ask yourself that will help you choose the best sunglasses for your adventure. 

What are sunglasses category ratings?

The most important factor when it comes to outdoor sunglasses is the type of lens they use, and specifically, how much visible light they let through. 

The amount of visible light transmission (VLT) is split into four bands: the imaginatively named Category 1, Category 2, Category 3 and Category 4. These are sometimes abbreviated to just Cat to be less of a mouthful. 

• Cat 1 sunglasses let in 46%-79% VLT so aren’t really that effective. You could wear them when it’s already overcast or just to look good. 

• Cat 2 sunglasses let in 18%-45% VLT and are good for normal sunny days, without snow or altitude being added to the mix. 

• Cat 3 sunglasses have 8%-17% VLT, so are ideal for use in the mountains – these are typically described as being good for sunny days at altitude without snow, or on overcast days at altitude with snow (you may still find them too dark at sea level on a standard day). 

• Cat 4 have 3%-8% VLT, which is exactly what you need when adventuring at high altitude or when exploring in the mountains at altitude where it is both sunny and snow-covered. Note: Cat 4 sunglasses are so dark that in some countries – including the UK – it’s illegal to wear them while driving. 

How should hiking sunglasses fit?

People often ignore this question when buying “normal life” sunglasses, just shopping by price or look, but it’s actually a rather important factor when you’re engaged in outdoor activities. 

You need a pair of sunglasses that fit your face size so that you don’t get loads of extra light coming in around the edges. Or even just be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time or fall off easily. You’re probably going to be wearing these for eight hours a day, so make sure they’re a good fit. 

Most brands allow you to shop by face size, although some you have to guess a bit whether you’re small, medium or large. 

What extra features should I look for in hiking sunglasses?

There are a host of extra little features available in hiking and mountaineering sunglasses. Some will be really key for you, and others won’t matter to you at all. It’s very personal. 

For example, do the glasses come with a case to protect them, or a guarantee for when you sit on them? Do they have removable guards for extra light reduction at higher altitudes? Is the glass durable and scratch resistant? Can you attach a cord to keep them in place or maybe it even comes with a cord? 

Think about your ideal and regular uses for these sunglasses and try to find some special features that will make your life easier and turn these into your favorite sunglasses.

What to do with your old sunglasses

If your sunglasses aren't in good enough condition to donate or sell, you can send them to Bird for recycling, and receive a voucher for 20% off a new pair. Many high street opticians also accept glasses and sunglasses for recycling, so look out for a drop-off point or ask at the counter whether there's a program in place.

If the lenses are scratched, you may be able to have them replaced without buying entirely new sunglasses. Again, your local optician will be able to say whether it's possible for your particular frames.

The 8KO lenses deliver full protection on brilliant days and perfect clarity of vision, even if you’re hiking near water or on snow, plus the frames offer good coverage from above your eyebrows to mid-cheekbone. 

Priced reasonably compared to similar hiking sunglasses, these sunglasses boast resistance to scratching as well as oil and water, and they don’t seem to fog up no matter how sweaty you get. Soft, flexible frames with screwless hinges are made from recycled materials and won’t easily break if you accidentally squash them into your backpack or drop them on a rocky trail. SunGod Tempests sunglasses: in the field

I can’t say that there’s been an abundance of bluebird days in Scotland lately to test out these sunglasses properly, so I recently packed them up and took them to Spain, where I never saw a cloud in the sky all week. This is my second pair of SunGod sunglasses and in terms of comfort and performance, I’m as impressed as ever.

Here’s how they performed:

Comfort

Being in non-stop sunshine, I basically wore these all day whether I was hiking or lounging at the beach and I didn't once recall removing them to give the bridge of my nose or my ears a breather. They feel great and are super lightweight so I barely notice them on my face.

Staying power

These sunglasses aren’t at all tight on my head, but the grippy nose pads and flexible arms mean that whether I was gazing up at the sky or had my head down rummaging through my backpack for water, they never slid off and met the same fate as many sunglasses before them. For running, however, they did slide down a bit when I have sunscreen on my face.

Visibility

I wore these on a hike up a mountain that rises straight out of the ocean so there was some serious glare going on and my vision wasn’t affected at all. I don’t understand the inner workings of SunGod’s 8KO lens technology, but it offers pristine vision, and they never seem to fog up when I get sweaty. The slightly larger frame size offers good visibility too. 

Cleaning and maintenance

The only thing I don't love is that it is a little harder to totally clean the lenses of sunscreen smudge, even using the pouch. It didn’t make much difference to my vision, fortunately, but they do look a little more smudged than I’d like after a week of wear. 

Durability

Rather than being made using stiff plastic, these sunglasses are made using a nylon that’s actually quite soft and pliable. Not only does this help them fit comfortably on your face, it means they feel less brittle and stand up better to being dropped. I was recently wearing them on a super windy day up Ben Arthur in the Arrochar Alps when they were blown clean off my head and under a rock. I thought the hinge had broken but in fact the leg had just come out slightly and I was able to easily pop it back in.

Style

Unlike the last pair of SunGods I tested, I absolutely love the way these sunglasses look. The bigger frame is flattering, and I chose the navy frames with gold lenses which gives mine a classic look, while the plastic frames don’t look cheap at all. These are definitely my go-to sunglasses for everyday wear as well as hiking now.

Helly Hansen Logo Cuff Beanie review: first impressions 

This chunky knit hiking hat comes in a classic style and is designed to deliver serious warmth on chilly adventures, whether you’re on a hike or tooling around the neighborhood. It offers plenty of room to cover your ears and even a high bun hairdo, is snug enough to stay on in the wind and comes in three different colors.

Coming in only one size, this hat might feel too snug for larger heads, and it’s too warm for high intensity adventures like trail running and cross country skiing. It’s not a super technical, lightweight or thin hat, but it’s good quality, will keep your noggin warm and looks pretty good.

Helly Hansen Logo Cuff Beanie review: in the field

I’ve been testing out this beanie for a couple of months in Switzerland and the hills of Scotland to see how it fares against a cold winter, and I’ve had plenty of challenging, frigid days to put it through its paces.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit 

This beanie comes in only one size, and it’s snug on my normal-sized head. I sense it could be too tight for those of you with a larger head, and comfort-wise, I’d like it to be slightly less tight. However, my favorite beanie has an annoying tendency to blow off on windy days, which we have a lot of in Scotland, so I really appreciate the stay-put fit of this hat and I tend to choose it when there’s a gale blowing. It’s quite long, so it easily covers my forehead and ears with loads of room for a high ponytail. 

Comfort and temperature regulation 

These are really pretty comfortable. The material is nice and silky with enough stretch to move with my swing, they have flat lock seams so no chafing on a 10 km run, and the stay-put grips means they don’t slide down and annoy me.

I was a bit afraid I’d be too chilly in these, but the material is quite sturdy so it does a good job of sheltering my arms from Scotland’s howling gales. I’ve seen ones which look more breathable and I think might be more practical in warmer weather, since nylon isn’t the most breathable fabric, but I found these to be perfect for running in 8°C (46°F) temps. They keep the chill and even a light rain off and dry quickly when wet. Of course, on a colder, bright day, they provide UV protection too.

Comfort and style

The knit of this hat is perfectly comfortable and non-itchy on my skin, so that’s a huge plus, but it being a bit tighter means I tend to want to push it up off my forehead. It’s quite a good looking urban-friendly hat, especially in the honeycomb color, but I must admit I prefer a slouchy style and this one sticks up quite a bit.  

Warmth and breathability

This isn’t a breathable hat meant for running, it’s designed to retain heat and it does that really well. That means it’s helped me stave off a headache when I’m hiking in really cold weather and walking around Verbier on -10C nights, but it’s too warm for running and cross country skiing.

Weight and packability

I wouldn’t call this hat heavy, but it’s a chunky affair and too bulky to easily shove in a pocket or wear under a helmet.

Balaclava vs neck gaiter: one's the full-coverage option for seriously cold days, the other's a more versatile tube that's handy for various functions all year round. So, how to choose?

As the cold weather wears on, you end up covering more and more of your body each time you step outside. At first, it’s a running jacket for your morning jog. Soon, you wouldn't consider hiking without a beanie hat and hiking gloves. Before you know it, you’re wearing a base layer and thermal underwear beneath your outerwear and discovering the joys of windproof ski pants even when you're not actually skiing. 

Eventually, the only skin that’s left exposed to the cold air is your face and, with frostbite being the last thing you want to content with this winter, you find yourself at the local gear shop holding a balaclava in one hand and a neck gaiter in the other, wondering which to choose.

Warmth and protection

If you’re not seeking warmth, we’re not really sure why you’d be considering a balaclava or a neck gaiter in the first place and both options will definitely help keep you toasty. How warm they are of course depends in part on the fabric they’re made from – either one can be found in merino wool which is naturally insulating, while one made from cotton may not be so warm. But overall, the better coverage of a balaclava gives it a definite edge of a neck gaiter in the warmth department. The right balaclava will cover your head, neck, ears and the majority of your face, and have a snug fit to trap body heat, whereas a neck gaiter is a bit looser, but great for keeping the drafts out of your neck area. You can pull a neck gaiter up to cover the bottom half of your face, and there’s even a way to wear them like a balaclava, but doing so won't keep out quite as much cold air.

For the same reasons as it provides better warmth, a balaclava also provides better overall protection from windchill and frostbite (especially if worn with ski goggles) and does a great job of protecting your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays on those bitterly cold, bright winter days. With a neck gaiter, the chances are that a bit more of your skin will be left exposed unless you get really creative.

Weight and packability

• There's very little between performance balaclavas and a neck gaiters in terms of packability and weight

If you’re unfamiliar with these two garments, discovering that a balaclava provides more coverage and warmth may lead you to think it’s heavier and bulkier. It’s not. Assuming you’re comparing a balaclava and neck gaiter that are meant for winter sports, and not one of those thick snood-like fashion balaclavas, both will be made using thin, lightweight material and will easily stash in the pocket of your ski jacket.

Versatility

• A neck gaiter is more versatile than a balaclava
• It can function as a hairband, sweatband, wristband, face mask etc.

While a balaclava’s design means it traps warmth and seals out drafts better, it also makes it less versatile overall. Certainly, a balaclava with a bigger opening means you can pull it down to free your nose and mouth, or up for more coverage, but besides that and the ability to rob a bank without being recognized, it doesn't offer you many other options. 

A neck gaiter, on the other hand, is basically a tube of material which means it has tons more uses than just an alternative to a balaclava or a scarf, and can be useful in both summer and winter. It can be a hairband, sweatband, wristband and face mask for the next pandemic, too (a balaclava would be overkill unless you plan on quarantining in Siberia). Curious? Breathability

• The materials that a gaiter or balaclava are made from impact their breathability
• Merino, nylon or polyester are ideal, as they all pull moisture away and dry quickly
• A neck gaiter can be pulled right down, making it the most breathable option

Like warmth, breathability will be influenced by the fabric your balaclava or neck gaiter is made from, and it’s safe to say that for either option, you’ll want to find one that’s made from a material that is both breathable and moisture wicking. You can tell a breathable fabric because you can see the light through it when you hold it up, but cotton and bamboo are both breathable and hold onto moisture, which isn’t great if you’re breathing heavily inside your mask. Go for merino wool, nylon or polyester which all pull moisture away from your skin and dry quickly.

All of that said, because a neck gaiter isn’t so tight and can be pulled down more easily, it’s probably easier to breathe (or at least, it feels that way) when wearing one than a balaclava which potentially covers your mouth and nose and can feel like it’s suffocating you if you’re already sensitive in that department.

Goggle fog

• Make sure you leave your balaclava or neck gaiter untucked from your goggles to stop them from fogging up

If you’re going to be skiing and snowboarding, you’re going to be wearing your neck gaiter or balaclava with a pair of ski goggles to protect your eyes. If worn incorrectly, this can mean you end up with foggy ski goggles, which is both annoying and dangerous, but it’s possible to avoid this. Tucking either your balaclava or neck gaiter into the bottom of your ski goggles can funnel your breath up inside your goggles, so with both options, either leave it untucked or just barely seal it in under the very bottom part of the foam. Price

• There's not much difference in price, though you can probably get a cheap neck gaiter for less than a balaclava

A quick look at REI’s selection of balaclavas revealed them to be priced between about $26 and $65, while their selection of neck gaiters will set you back between $19.95 and $65. So on the lowest end, you can find a neck gaiter for a bit cheaper than a balaclava, they’re definitely in a similar ballpark pricewise.

Comparison table

The verdict

This one comes down to a mix of personal preference, what you plan to do in it and what kind of temperatures you’re expecting. For seriously cold weather, you’ll appreciate the full protection of a balaclava, but only if you can stand having something covering your nose and mouth. If you’re not looking at any extreme cold and want something versatile, a neck gaiter is the way to go.

Best hiking hats 2026

The best eco option

Weighing just 50g, and woven with Páramo’s ingenious Parameta G fabric, this dual-layer beanie is a perfect pal on outdoor adventures no matter where you’re going, or when. Our expert tester Pat says that "the design of the material means it can keep you cosy when it’s cold, or allow cool air to flow to your scalp when it’s warmer." How does it manage this? We hear you ask. Well, when worn under an outer shell, the fleecy grid pattern holds air between the squares and warms it, but if you wear it as a stand-alone hat, fresh air can permeate the fabric. 

Pat reckons the latter part of this system works better in the brand’s brilliant base layers than it does in this hat, which features a lovely fleecy inner, perfect for keeping your head hot, but not so good at letting the cooler air in – which is fine by us, because the main job of a beanie, so far as we’re concerned, is to keep your loaf warm. It's also wonderfully comfortable and stretchy, wicking moisture away well too. Despite its low profile, it provides plenty of warmth and slots under a helmet for cycling or mountaineering.

The best lightweight beanie

The eponymous logo on this hat carries a certain amount of cachet among outdoorsy types, so you’ll immediately fit in when you stroll into a climbers’ café or walkers’ pub. It comes in loads of colors, so there’ll be a hue to match your favorite waterproof jacket or puffer. Our expert tester Matt reckons that "as a warm hat for winter and springtime hiking, climbing or even a good old-fashioned snowball fight, we found it does the job with aplomb".

It’s made of a lightweight single-knit fabric that provides moderate warmth without causing your head to overheat. Unlike cheaper imitations, it also has a fleecy internal headband to keep ears toasty, minimize irritation and generally add to the performance. "The fit is nice and close" according to Matt and, as you'd expect from Rab, it'll go under a climbing or biking helmet too. Unlike some other more technical beanies, this one isn’t waterproof, though it is quick-drying, being made from acrylic. The downside of that is relatively poor eco credentials compared to natural wool or recycled synthetic fibres.

The best apres ski beanie

The intriguing-named Lost Lager II (where did you leave that second beer?) beanie from Columbia comes in one size only, and the fit is relaxed, as befits the laid-back après snow sport style Columbia are aiming for. This means that it’s far too large to be worn under a helmet, so it's not one for mountaineers or climbers. Beyond winter sport resorts, it can also be worn while hiking in the hills and winter trekking – but our expert tester Pat admits that it's a relatively heavy hat to carry around when you’re not using it. 

With a reasonably modest-sized brand logo on the front, the Lost Lager II beanie comes down over your ears, and can be rolled down to cover your entire head if you so wish. Admirably, it's woven entirely from recycled materials (rescued polyester), which is both good for the planet, and also means it retains its decent thermal properties even if you soaked it in a stream. Pat went on to point out that "it doesn’t have an inner lining, and won’t keep your noggin dry, but it is extremely warm".

The best neck gaiter

Pioneers of a design that has often been imitated, this brand claim to be the makers of the original tubular scarves now known by many people as simply ‘buffs’. As a piece of mega multifunctional outdoor apparel, buffs are beloved by hikers, campers, runners, climbers, cyclists, skiers, paddlers and adventurers of all descriptions. 

The scarves, which come in myriad colors and designs, can be worn in 12 different ways about your head, neck and face, offering protection from the sun, sand and dust, catching sweat before it gets in your eyes, keeping your hair out of your face, and even reducing the spread of germs (although they are not as effective in this regard as a proper face mask). They’re easy to carry (we'd often carry them on our wrist, around our neck, or in a pocket or bag), and weigh very little. They are seamless and we found them to be very comfortable indeed. Plus, these days they’re made with Repreve – a synthetic material spun from recycled plastic bottles.

The best for summer adventures

Arguably the ultimate piece of outdoor headwear, these Canadian-made hard-as-nails hats float (in case you/it falls in water), tie on (so it can be worn in gusty and windy conditions), repel rain, wick moisture and shield your head and face from bright sunlight and UV rays. They are also ventilated with grommets, which meant we didn’t get too sweaty beneath that broad brim, and even have a secret pocket. Made from natural materials, making them sustainable, these hats are sized specifically for the wearer. 

Tilley hemp hats don’t shrink, but they do fade over time, creating a well-used personalised look you can be proud of. The most stylish hat

Being outside in the sunshine is one of the joys of summer. But sunburned neck, ears, and shoulders aren’t any fun. This big-circumference sun had provides the most protection possible with its sheer surface area, unless you’re willing to don a full sombrero. 

Worn traditionally by Hawaiian lifeguards, it’s as good for beach walks as for backyard barbecues, day hikes in hot sun, and pulling weeds from the garden. Dakine added aloha to the classic straw lifeguard hat with a fun polyester print on the underside. The hat comes in two sizes, and it’s built to stay put once it’s on your head. We found that the integrated, elastic headband isn’t binding, while its cinch chin strap prevented it from blowing away, even when a gust picked up. It wasn’t compatible with a full backpacking pack, but we have been wearing it for most other activities all summer long.

The best budget summer hat

If functionality is more of a concern than frills, the Forclaz Anti-UV Trekking Hat merits its place somewhere near the top of your shortlist.

The fairly classy looking sunhat has a basic design and lacks a few of the bells and whistles found on pricier models – which we’d ideally like for hiking in the scorching heat – but covers its bottom line very well given the modest RRP. It’s made with quick-drying, moisture-wicking and tear-resistant polyamide fabric. We found we could scrunch it down into a tiny bundle without it losing its shape. It has a UPF 50+ rating, and its 15% spandex content ensures a snug but comfortable fit. While more extensive mesh ventilation panels, Legionnaire-style neck coverage, and a Velcro/popper or two to pin back the brim when needed be would’ve been appreciated, the price tag will make all of these shortcomings entirely forgivable for the less demanding or fussy buyer.

The best waterproof cap

Weighing in at just 150g, this is a classic cap with a difference. It's made with high-performing Gore-Tex, which means it is solidly wind and waterproof, but also light and breathable. We found it to be easily adjustable at the back, so although only available in one size, we were able to fit it securely enough to be worn on gusty days. The peak provides protection from the glare of the sun and will help avoid sunburn on the nose and cheeks. If you’re hiking away from the sun, flip it round (we’re pretty sure you don’t need detailed instructions). 

We found it was low profile enough to be worn under hoods, helmets and warmer headwear if required. This lid is listed as a men’s cap, but there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t be viewed as a unisex hat (although, note that there is no gap at the back to pull long hair through when worn in a ponytail). Gore also offer a lightweight mesh cap, which is more breathable, does have a ponytail gap at the rear and is cheaper ($30/£30), but is not waterproof.

The best folding cap

The Sealskinz Salle cap is supremely practical, and a great hat to stick in your backpack in any weather. The waterproof membrane means water won't soak through to your hair, while the extra long brim keeps it well away from your eyes. The membrane doesn't need any special care, either; as Sealskinz recommends. Our run leader expert Cat said: "I threw the Salle Cap in the washing machine with non-biological detergent, and it came out good as new".

Cat reckons another of the Salle Cap's best features is its foldable brim, which allows you to tuck it into the side pocket of your daypack in case the weather turns. Although it's not the lightest running cap we've ever tested, and you may prefer something less weighty for the height of summer, the Salle Cap is an excellent option for the shoulder seasons when you can't be sure what the weather will bring.

How to choose the best hiking hat

There are so many different reasons why you should pack a hat when you're off on an adventure. With myriad headwear designs on the market, the hat you opt for will depend on where you're hiking and the season. One thing is for sure, a hat is an absolute hiking essential, and here's why:

When the sun comes out in the northern hemisphere, it's important to remember the dangers posed by its glare. This is where a sun hat or cap really comes into its own. However, if you're heading into environment where a deluge is commonplace even in summer, a sun hat won't cut it, as it won't fit nicely under your waterproof hood. Of course, you can take it off, but it's also a bit of an awkward shape for your daypack. A cap has the advantage here, especially one that boasts waterproof qualities such as the Gore-Tex cap.

During winter, if you’re after something warm, versatile and practical, which will work for hiking and cold-weather camping – as well as other outdoor adventures in later winter and early spring, there are some superb beanie hats out there.

What winter hiking hat designs are there?

Beanies

Perhaps the simplest style of hat available, beanie’s close-fitting design makes them warm. They also stay put on your head (won’t blow away), they’re often reasonably breathable, tend to be more affordable and have a low profile, so they fit beneath hoods and helmets.

Bobble hats

Ever wondered what the bobble on a bobble hat is for? The theory is that they once graced the heads of sailors, and offered a little more protection when they were working in dark, tight spaces (presumably as an early warning system for when the wearer was about to bump their head). Whether or not you go for a bobble in the 21st century is totally up to you, but it is essentially a beanie with ball on top.

Skull caps

Another beanie sub species, these thin, tight fitting fleece-style hats are great for keeping your ears warm and your hair out of your face for winter sports. They are light and breathable enough to stop you overheating, hence why they are often popular with skiers and winter runners.

Ushanka

These traditional Russian hats with a fur lining have evolved into modern ‘trapper’ hats, which usually have a faux fur lining and ear flaps that can be clipped together either under the chin or on top of the head. They’re ideal for really cold or windy conditions, giving you the most coverage and protecting your ears and face from snow and icy winds. In warmer conditions you’re likely to find them too hot and heavy.

What summer hiking hat designs are there?

Sun hat

A sun hat is the ultimate option for head and neck protection when it comes to the sun’s damaging UV rays. The larger the brim, the greater the protection. However, in windy conditions the brim can act like a sail and take off, rendering you hat-less. Many feature a neck strap, so that the odds of losing the hat altogether are minimised. Sun hats are also not the most packable option.

Cap

A classic baseball cap is the go-to for hikers who enjoy going fast and light, preferring a more minimalist approach than that offered by a sun hat. A cap has the advantage that it can be worn under a hood or a helmet, while it also packs down small into a backpack. The brim can be swivelled depending on which direction the sun is coming from.

What materials are hiking hats made from?

The best hiking hats for winter conditions are available in a range of synthetic and natural materials, but some stand out for the warmth and comfort they offer. Top of the naturally derived pack is merino wool, which traps heat brilliantly and is also moisture-wicking and odour-resistant. Merino's qualities have also made it the go-to material for hiking base layers. It retains some heat-giving properties even when wet, and doesn’t itch in the way normal wool can, making it perfect for wearing next to the face.

We also rate hats made or lined with fleece. Polyester fleece is very soft and comfortable, is quick to dry, and is warm without adding weight and bulk, making it ideal for thinner hats and headbands designed for sport. Thicker winter hats designed for snow and icy conditions often have a soft lining of fleece or faux fur combined with a tougher outer layer – look for a waterproof or water-resistant canvas. Fur has always been a popular choice as headgear in the coldest climates due to its unsurpassed warmth and the fact that it doesn’t freeze or frost up at sub-zero temperatures – but these days, faux fur does the job just as well.

The best hiking hats for summer can be made from all manner of materials, from natural fabrics to synthetic creations. Tilley's TH5 is a great example of natural materials being put to good use. It repels rain, wicks moisture and protects you from the sun.

What color should my hiking hat be?

The best winter hats can come in bold bright colors or more subtle hues. Hunters (or people who play out where hunters also hunt) often wear neon orange hats, and for good reason – bright orange or red hats can make you easier to spot in the mountains (or on quiet country lanes), or when you’re out walking, running or cycling in low light. If you want a hat to wear in the city or for the winter commute as well as in the great outdoors, you may want to pick a more neutral color.

Patagonia Powder Town headband: first impressions 

Patagonia’s Powder Town headband looks like the stuff of classic ski movies but performs alongside the best of today’s headbands combining both warmth and breathability. This warm, cosy headband is thick without being bulky and wide enough to give protection from both wind and snow.

Though it’s built for warmth, the fleece lining means it wicks away sweat if you’re on a cold winter run, ski touring or snowshoeing and it’s soft against your skin. The snug fit keeps the breeze at bay and it makes a worthy replacement for a beanie where you want warmth without overheating. The 4” band is the same width all the way round and doesn’t have a ponytail hole, but works well with all hairstyles and stays in place when you’re gliding through the snow.

It definitely comes at a premium price, but you’re not only paying for a seriously durable piece of kit, it’s made using 100% recycled polyester and Fair Trade sewn, so you can feel really good about this purchase. Pick from three classic designs that will make you the envy of the slopes and keep you warm on cold days.

Patagonia Powder Town headband: on the trails 

Patagonia’s Powder Town headband is a snug and cosy winter warmer featuring a fun throwback look, but while you’d fit right in wearing it in a classic ski movie, it performs far better than anything we wore in the 1980s. 

This thick headband provides heaps of warmth on cold days and is as wide as headbands get so it offers loads of protection against the wind and sun. While it doesn’t fit easily under my ski helmet, it’s not bulky and I love that it has a fleecy lining which feels soft and provides breathability. It is comfortable and snug on my head without being tight or scratchy anywhere. 

This headband is really the perfect alternative to a beanie on a cold day when I know I’m going to be working up a sweat. The only downside is that if you sweat in it a lot, it will need washed more frequently than bands made from natural materials. It doesn’t have a ponytail hole but I’ve found I can tuck a low ponytail in no problem and even wear it with my hair down. This is definitely my first choice for ski touring and winter hikes, and even works for trail running on frigid days.

I love Patagonia’s commitment to sustainability and was thrilled to see this headband is made from 100% recycled polyester. It is definitely priced on the high end for headbands, but it’s eco-friendly, well-built and I’ll wear it all winter long. It also makes a great gift for outdoors lovers and skiers in your life.

Many people will think of sunglasses as a fashion product and something extra to wear in the summer only, but eye specialists recommend we make sure we have sunglasses to hand all year round and especially when spending time in the hills and mountains. 

In fact, sunglasses for hiking are recommended as an essential piece of kit and there are many different types of sunglasses to choose from. 

Farah Topia is an optometrist and clinical adviser for the Association of Optometrists. She  says: “Just as ultra violet (UV) light causes damage and premature ageing in the skin, so UV can negatively affect the eyes.”

Sharon Copeland, an optician at Feel Good Contacts, gives greater clarity about the danger of UV rays. She explains that there are three types of UV rays that the sun emits: UVA, UVB and UVC.

She says: “UVC rays are the most damaging but are absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere before they reach us and are not a direct threat, while UVA and UVB rays can have serious long and short-term effects on the eyes and our vision.”

It's not just in summer that there is a danger form UV rays. Topia says: “In the summer, when it is bright and sunny, people are much more likely to think about wearing sunglasses but we should also be thinking about wearing them during the winter, especially for activities like hiking and skiing.”

UV dangers and risk to eye health

Copeland lists some of the potential health risks caused by exposited to UV rays.

Macular degeneration (AMD): UV rays can contribute to the onset of macular degeneration, a condition where the retina becomes damaged, resulting in central vision loss. This gradual loss of sight often happens as we get older, however increased exposure to UV light can speed up the process.

Cataracts: These are clouds that form on your eye’s lens, obscuring vision and your ability to focus on objects. Studies have shown that exposure to UVB rays increases the risk of cataracts forming, which require surgery to remove.

Pterygium: This is a benign growth that forms on the conjunctiva of your eye as a result of UV light.

Photokeratitis: Typically caused by UVB light reflecting off snow, photokeratitis is caused by high short-term exposure to the rays. Essentially, the eye becomes sunburnt from this light, causing blurry vision or temporary sight loss.

Cancer: Another potential risk is cancer of the eye, eyelids and surrounding skin.

What to look for in sunglasses for hiking 

Fortunately, there are a few precautions you can take to limit your eyes’ exposure to UV rays and keep them safe from harm. There are plenty of factor to consider whether you are looking for the best hiking sunglasses, or the best sunglasses for trail running.

Maya Tailor, a dispensing optician at Whitby & Co. Opticians, states the first and most important factor when purchasing sunglasses for outdoor sports, including hiking, is how well they will protect your eyes from UV radiation. 

She says: “Ideally you want sunglasses with a UV400 protection, which will filter out up to 99% of UVA and UVB rays. You can tell whether sunglasses offer UV protection by checking the frame or labelling for a CE or UV400 mark, which confirms they conform with the EU standards.” 

UV400 refers to UV rays at the top end of the UV spectrum and up to a 400-nanometer wavelength. Sunglasses with this level of protection block an even wider spectrum than the CE and British Standard models, which many eye specialists advise as the ultimate protection for your eyes.

Copeland adds other things to consider when purchasing sunglasses for hiking. She says: “Sunglasses with darker lenses offer the most protection, while wrap around frames and those that sit close to the face offer a fuller coverage of your eyes from angles around the lenses. 

“For extra protection, consider a pair of polarised sunglasses which protect against glare and halos from reflected rays if you are near water or snow. This can also be extra useful when driving.” 

Oculoplastic surgeon Dr Elizabeth Hawkes adds that size is important, too. She explains:  “I would suggest choosing oversized sunglasses because these have a larger surface area of protection, which not only protects the eye itself but also the eyelid skin which, due to the structural complexity and function of the eyelids, is one of the most delicate areas of the face. 

“Oversized glasses are also beneficial for protecting the skin that surrounds the eye area in order to prevent sun damage, which can cause premature ageing and ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes, as well as poses the risk of causing skin cancer.”

Experts also advise that if you wear clear everyday prescription eyewear, both glasses and contact lenses, you should consider requesting the addition of UV filters. 

Sunglass lenses for hikers

It can be confusing when choosing the right lenses for your sunglasses. These days there are an array of colours, tints and effects.

Dr Susan Sarangapani, consultant eye surgeon at the OCL Vision clinic,  says: “The key thing to remember here is that a darker tint doesn’t necessarily equal better UV protection. Dark tints work best in very sunny conditions, but on cloudier days they can make it hard to see.”

As well as the UV400 rating, which tells you that the lenses are effective at blocking harmful UV rays, there are categories of tint. So, for example, for sunny conditions and especially when hiking, you should consider a category 3 lens.

The category number equates to a percentage of the VLT (Visible Light Transmission) and how much light the lens lets through. The higher the VLT the lighter the lens, conversely the lower the VLT the darker the tint will be, blocking more light coming through to the eye

Category 0 (VLT 80-100%): a clear or very light tint lens – mainly used for impact protection. Many safety eyewear glasses have a clear lens.

Category 1 (VLT 43-80%): typically a yellow or pale / light tint. This lens is not ideal for sunny conditions but fine in overcast conditions.

Category 2 (18-43%): typically  orange, rose blue and red lenses. These are fine for partially sunny conditions and offer a good amount of protection against sun glare.

Category 3 (8-18%): for strong sunlight and the most common category because almost all brown and grey, or smoke lenses, are Category 3. 

Category 4 (3-8%): these typically have a very dark grey or brown lens and they are great in the mountains or desert where the sun is intense and there are high glare conditions. 

Dr Hawkes, who is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, adds: "’What you’re looking for in sunglasses lenses depends very much on what you’ll be using them for. Tinted lenses are good for certain sports, because they reduce the light intensity and cut the glare, which helps to reduce eyestrain."

It's also important to remember that if you are hiking at higher altitude, near water or snow, the sun's glare and intensity will be greater so you might benefit from a darker tint. 

Another consideration is whether or not the lenses are polarized. Polarized lenses reduce the glare from horizontal surfaces such as water, the road and snow. 

Dr Hawkes says: "Polarized lenses are usually more expensive but are ideal if you’re doing lots of driving or spending time by water.”

Some brands have their own lens technology. For example, Oakley adds PRIZM lenses to some of their sports sunglasses. PRIZM lenses are said to "fine tune vision for specific environments". PRIZM lenses emphasise colors where the eye is most sensitive to detail, which in turn has the potential to enhance performance, safety and your overall experience of chatty you can see around you.

In addition, you'll see many people wearing mirrored lenses. Glare is the primary reason why people choose sunglasses with mirrored lenses so if you are driving or participating in an outdoor sport in sunny conditions, a mirrored lens could be a good choice.

Mirrored sunglasses are also very fashionable just now and they allow you to hide your eyes behind the lenses, if this is something you wish to do. 

However, there are some disadvantages of mirrored sunglass lenses such as the need to take greater care of them to prevent scratches in the coating and also they usually cost a bit more than standard tinted lenses.

What about lens coatings?

When buying high quality sunglasses for hiking, including prescription sunglasses, you might be asked if you want extra coatings. This will add to the coast of your sunglasses but it could be a useful addition if you are rough with your specs, although there appears to be questions about the effectiveness of some coatings.

Dr Susan Sarangapani, consultant eye surgeon at the OCL Vision clinic, says: “If lenses get scratched, they can lose some of their protective qualities – especially their ability to block UV rays. If this happens, you should replace them to ensure they offer adequate UV protection.

“The jury is still out on how effective scratch resistant coatings are. The best way to prevent scratching is to keep your sunglasses in a case or soft pouch when you’re not wearing them. Don’t just leave them rattling around the bottom of your bag.”

Choosing the best frame for sunglasses for hiking

There is a wide range of different frames and colours of frame for sunglasses. If you are hiking you need to make sure the frames and lenses feel comfortable. A good fit is important so that you are happy to wear them for long periods.

If your sunglasses rub your ears or nose or constantly fall down your face, you will be less likely to stick with them.

A popular choice of sunglasses for hikers is a wrap-around frame, which offer a neat fit on the face and protection from the wind as well as the sun. Aside from wraparound styles, the modern look for sunglasses is for larger lenses and this is beneficial because they cover more of the face and eyes. 

Polycarbonate lenses are a good choice, too, because they are lightweight and impact-resistant.

Also look for wide arms at the side of sunglasses to offer more protection from the sun from the sides, as well as rubber or silicone-tipped arms and comfort nose pieces so that the sunglasses stay on your face.

Hinges that open out the way, as well as in the way, are likely to be more long lasting especially if you are in the habit of taking your specs on and off a lot.

Lastly, if you are hiking in more extreme conditions, you choose sunglasses that have side and nose bridge protectors. 

Our verdict on sunglasses for hiking

It's clear that the eye experts recommend that when hiking it is important to have protection from harmful UV rays, even in the less sunny months, and the best solution is a comfortable and high quality pair of sunglasses. Adding a wide-brimmed hat or peaked cap will also give greater protection to vulnerable eyes and the skin around the eyes.

Madison Isoler Mesh Headband review: first impressions 

British brand Madison is a cycling apparel company, but their Isoler Mesh headband can easily cross over into your running kit. This is a pretty simple, but effective, piece of kit that’s geared more towards warm weather.

Made from polyester, this headband is good at wicking away sweat and the mesh panel at the nape of your neck adds breathability. It boasts a really comfortable, non-bulky fit with good stretch and flatlock seams to prevent annoying rubbing and chafing. Without features like a ponytail hole or high visibility reflective details, It is minimal and perfect for anyone just looking for a simple solution for sweat and it stays in place when you’re on the go. 

It won’t provide much warmth in the winter, but will certainly keep the wind out your ears if that’s all you’re looking for.

Madison Isoler Mesh Headband: on the trails 

The Madison Isoler Mesh Headband is a pretty straightforward and minimalist headband that does the trick for warm trail runs.

It’s not a thermal band meant to keep you warm in winter, but it’s made from polyester so is great for wicking away sweat. The main added feature that I haven’t seen on other bands is the mesh panel on the half that goes around the nape of my neck and that does really add breathability on hot days which I like.

It’s definitely as comfortable as headbands come, with smooth fabric and flatlock seams, plus they’ve gone all in with the stretch so it’s not too tight and has more of a barely there feel which is what I’m looking for on a trail run. 

It doesn’t have a ponytail hole and I found that if I tuck my ponytail into it, it doesn’t stay in place but wearing a lo ponytail over the top of it works fine. It’s not particularly wide – under three inches – so it doesn’t doo much to keep the sun off my part line. It isn’t thermal so I might not wear it on really cold days, but it certainly will keep a cool breeze out of my ears.

If you’re just looking for a straightforward headband at a good price, you’ll be happy with this.

Columbia Unisex Trail Shaker Headring review: first impressions 

In the Trail Shaker Headring, Columbia goes for optimizing warmth using thermal reflective technology and a wider design around your ears, and they’ve even provided holes for the legs of your trail running sunglasses.

The inside of the band uses is thermal reflective technology, which basically means it’s studded with lots of tiny, silver dots that reflect your body heat back into you, while in between the dots the band is made of fleece, which is breathable and means it’s great if you’re working up a sweat on a cold hike or trail run.

The band is a bit narrower (under three inches) at the crown and nape and wider around the ears, so it’s designed for keeping your lobes and forehead warm more so than keeping the sun off your scalp. The narrowness around the nape also means you don’t notice the lack of ponytail hole.

Two small holes at the temples are perfect for sliding your glasses or sunglass legs through, so that you can wear them comfortably and securely while you move.

It’s not as stretchy as some headbands, but comes in two sizes so you can size up if you need a larger band and should expect a snug fit.

Columbia Unisex Trail Shaker Headring: on the trails 

It doesn’t seem like there would be all that much to say about a headband, but I found this one to be full of surprises. Compared to my old, bulky fleece headband which I’ve worn on trail runs the last few winters, this one is lightweight and really low profile, meaning it even fits under my ski helmet. That said, the thermal reflective technology means it’s really warm. So warm, in fact, that I only use it for running on the coldest days, but it is excellent for winter hiking in place of a beanie.

When I first pulled it out of the packaging, I couldn’t figure out why there were two holes in it that look like button holes. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I assumed they were for my earphones at first, however once I pulled it on, I saw they were up by my temples. A quick look on the Columbia website revealed that they were for my sunglasses (it does also say earbuds but I don’t see how that can work unless you have a very unusual head). If I pull the headband down a bit so it’s more over my forehead than scalp, my sunglasses thread through perfectly! Usually, I’m either wearing my sunglasses on top of my headband, where they slide around against the fabric, or under the head band to keep them in place, where they hurt my head and ears. This solution means they stay in place without hurting and I think is absolutely the biggest selling point of this headband, especially if you wear regular glasses or live somewhere very bright and sunny.

In terms of fit and comfort, the seams aren’t as comfortable as some of my other headbands, and I found this one to be ever so slightly too tight. I think I have a fairly normal sized head and the smaller size feels a bit snug on my forehead. It definitely stays in place but I start to notice it pretty quickly. It’s not as stretchy as some other bands too, but the good news is that they do offer it in two sizes to accommodate this.

I love that it’s wider around the ears for warmth, though it’s not designed for covering up your part line so make sure you apply sunscreen or tie your hair differently. It doesn't have a ponytail hole but I can comfortably wear a low ponytail and even tuck it into the band. Finally, it does get stinky faster than wool or cotton because it’s polyester so it does require more frequent washing if you sweat a lot.

All in all, I’d say I’ll save this one for really cold trail runs, but I like it as an alternative to my beanie for winter hikes and cold ski days.

Smartwool Merino 250 Reversible Headband review: first impressions 

Smartwool takes a straightforward approach to this headband, opting to rely on the power of merino wool instead of fancy frills, and the approach pays off. The Reversible Headband is a wide, four inch band that offers plenty of coverage whether you’re trying to keep the wind out of your ears or the sun off your scalp.

Made using a double layer of 100% merino wool, this band offers plenty of warmth on cold days, however its moisture wicking properties mean you don’t overheat and it works for milder conditions too. It also doesn't get stinky quickly if you’re sweating a lot.

It wears extremely soft next to the skin, though it can become slightly itchy on warm days, and manages to be snug and stay in place without being tight or pulling your hair, making it an extra comfortable alternative to a beanie hat. The reversible feature means you can choose between a fun pattern or bold solid depending on your mood.

It doesn’t have any high vis detailing or a ponytail hole, which means you might wear your ponytail a little higher, but in terms of quality and performance, it will be indispensable for your winter adventures.

Smartwool Merino 250 Reversible Headband: on the trails 

The Smartwool Merino 250 Reversible Headband is easily the most comfortable headband I’ve tried and it’s a definite winner for my cold adventures where I want to keep the wind out of my ears but don’t want to overheat. 

The look is a bit more classic ski bunny with a straightforward, four inch band with no gathering or ponytail holder. I love the width because it covers my entire part on a sunny day and is big enough to pull down over my forehead a bit. It’s actually a viable alternative to a winter beanie.

The merino wool is nice and soft against the skin and only becomes a little itchy if it's warm day. It’s very stretchy and not tight at all so no hair pulling or headache, but it stays put on a trail run. The double layer is definitely designed for warmth and I’ve found that I far prefer this to my old fleece band for cold days, because it isn’t bulky and has great stretch. It does a great job of wicking away sweat, however even though it’s thermoregulating I wouldn’t wear it for warm, summer trail runs. This is definitely a winter accessory for me.

It doesn’t have a ponytail hole but after experimenting a bit, I found that it has enough give that I can just tuck my low ponytail into it and it feels fine. You might have to wear your ponytail a bit high otherwise, however I haven’t found this to be a problem.

I’ve been able to sweat a lot in this without it getting stinky which is a huge bonus. It’s at the higher end of the moderate price range for this type of product, but the quality is excellent and since it’s reversible, it’s like you get two for the price of one.

This beautiful trail run takes your through the forest and along the shore of Loach Ard in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

BAM Bamboo Headband: first impressions 

This super soft, breathable running headband makes the perfect companion for long trail runs, warm weather hikes, sweaty yoga sessions and basically any activity where you want your hair and sweat out of your eyes.

Made using a blend of bamboo, organic cotton and elastane, it is just stretchy enough, plenty soft against your skin, breathable for sweaty pursuits, doesn’t get stinky easily and is better for the planet.

The snug fit ensures it stays put when you’re running but with such soft fabric you’ll barely notice it’s there. It’s wide at the top to cover most of your crown and protect your part line from sunburn, but gathers nicely at the nape of your neck meaning you can wear it with a high or low ponytail or even with your hair loose.

Though it’s not thermal and doesn’t have any high vis details, it makes for a great all-rounder headband that you can wear in all seasons, and it looks good enough that you might even just wear it around town because you love it so much.

BAM Bamboo Headband: on the trails 

I almost always wear a headband when I’m on the trail, but never do I wear one around town; however, this might be the headband to change my mind. The BAM Bamboo Headband really hits all the bases for me in terms of comfort, moisture management capabilities, sustainable production and if I’m being honest, not making me look like a crazy person. 

It features a wide band at the top and gathers the nape of my neck which is super flattering and also really practical. With longer hair, I usually can’t get a high ponytail to stay in after the first mile of trail running, and often bands that don’t have ponytail holes are just annoying. Interestingly, the design of this one means I can wear it with a low ponytail without a hole. I even tried it with my hair down and was surprised to see it works.

So, it looks nice, but it also does the job on the trails. It wicks away sweat nicely, the way bamboo is known to do. I tend to wear it over my ears when I’m running to keep the wind out but it’s also comfortable tucked behind my ears. 

I have an average sized head and this one is snug enough on me to stay put but doesn’t give me a headache or pulling my hair, and the soft fabric is super comfortable. I have found some over the years that are so wide that the back edge ends up sticking up, but this one is just wide enough to protect my entire part from sunburn on a bright day without any extra fabric.

Though I do own a fleece headband for winter, I find it overly warm for running and this is one I can use year-round. Because it’s bamboo, it takes ages to get stinky which I appreciate.

This headband doesn’t come with any high vis details, however since I’m not a road runner that doesn’t matter to me. Pricewise, it’s bang in the middle of the spectrum making it a relatively small expense for a good quality item that you’re likely to wear a lot.

Sizing

One size fits all. With lots of stretch, it’s unlikely this will be too tight and unless you have an abnormally small head, there should be no problem. 

Fit

Snug without giving me a headache, wide on top and tapers at the nape of my neck. 

Comfort 

Very comfortable thanks to soft, breathable bamboo fabric. 

Temperature regulation 

Will keep a cold wind out of your ears and won’t make you overheat come warm weather.

Breathability 

This does a great job of wicking away sweat for me.

Durability 

Well made construction-wise. I do find bamboo breaks down a little faster than synthetic materials, but since you won’t need to wash this as frequently, it should hold up. 

Here’s where we tested the BAM Bamboo Headband: 

The West Highland Way stretches for 96 miles all the way to Fort William in the Highlands and would take you far from Glasgow if you attempted the whole trail, but you can easily do the first section in a day.

First impressions

What you see is what you get with the Rab Logo Beanie: it is, unsurprisingly, a beanie made by Rab with their logo on it. Fortunately, as an established British brand with plenty of serious mountain heritage, it’s a logo that carries a certain amount of cachet amongst outdoorsy types, so you won’t seem out of a place when you stroll into a climbers’ café or walkers’ pub wearing this hat. It comes in loads of colours too, so there’ll likely be a hue to match your waterproof jacket or puffer of choice.

Unlike some other more technical beanies from companies like Sealskinz or Dexshell, this hat isn’t waterproof, though it is quick-drying, being made from acrylic. The downside of that is relatively poor eco credentials compared to natural wool or recycled synthetic fibres. There is also some evidence that acrylic is one of the worst culprits for leaching microplastics into the environment – so even though this beanie is machine-washable, it isn’t one to chuck in the machine too often if you can help it.

In the field

As a warm hat for hiking, trail running and climbing, or even a winter snowball fight, the Rab Logo Beanie does exactly the job it says it will. It is made of a lighter weight single-knit fabric that provides moderate warmth without causing your head to overheat and your cheeks to turn russet red, as we’ve found with some heavyweight wool caps.

Unlike cheaper imitations, it also has a fleecy internal headband that keeps ears toasty, minimizes irritation and generally adds to the performance levels and overall sensation of cosy comfort. The fit is nice and close, and it will go under a climbing or biking helmet too.

First impressions

It may look a bit like something your grandad would wear, but there are a lot of good things to say about the Rohan Nordic cap, which unashamedly puts practicality over fashion trends. The large flaps framing the hat fold down to become wide earflaps and a neck guard, which are very useful for protecting more of your face and keeping rain, snow or sun off your neck when you’re on the go. When you don’t need them, fold them up and snap them back into place.

The hat’s outer material is a tough canvas that repels water and the inner material is a soft Sherpa fleece that is comfortable and feels great against the skin. The whole cap weighs just 100g, which is light enough that you’ll barely feel it despite all the protection from the elements it offers.

In the field

The Rohan Nordic cap is described as being water-repellent, rather than waterproof, and while testing it out during a very wet winter, we found it did a good job of keeping rain at bay, although water can get trapped in the flaps if they are up rather than around your face.

An insulated layer makes this hat warm even in cold weather, but we found it a tad too warm to work on spring or autumn days. Save it for frosty walks and hill hikes in the depths of winter, and swap to a lighter beanie in better weather.

The micro fleece inner lining is lovely and comfortable, and this hat will keep your head nice and warm on the coldest of outdoor escapades without any of the annoying itchiness a full-wool hat with no lining can cause.

A no-nonsense bobble hat from a brand born and raised on the edge of the Peak District in oft-chilly northern England, the Rab Braid Beanie does exactly what it promises, keeping your ears and bonce nice and toasty while you’re out and about, whether you’re walking or at the crag belaying for a friend.

Obviously, being a bobble design, it won’t fit beneath a helmet, and makes wearers seem slightly gnomish if they opt to put a hood over the top of it. Generally, though, it looks and feels fantastic whether worn après snow sports to a ski chalet bar, out on the trails for a pre-pub walk.

It is all in the name – the Fjällräven Nordic Heater Hat is specifically designed to offer great warmth in really tough cold climates, and we wouldn’t expect anything less from Fjällräven, a great brand that designs and tests their beautifully made outdoor clothing and kit in Sweden’s toughest environments.

This trapper-style hat is big and it means business, with a generous amount of faux fur lining the face. The wide ear flaps can be clipped and adjusted under the chin, protecting a fair amount of the face, or buttoned up to the side of the head in warmer weather or to allow you to hear better. Faux fur is ideal for snow and icy conditions, as it doesn’t freeze up. The tough outer canvas, which is available in three dark colorways that won’t show dirt, is fully waterproof, offering extra protection from wind and snow.

We tested out our Fjällräven Nordic Heater Hat in the Arctic Circle and never, ever, felt the cold. The fact that you can clip the ear flaps together is also very handy in high winds or just for clipping your hat to your backpack when you’re pulling it on and off during the day.

The Fjällräven Nordic Heater Hat is definitely a winter-specific piece of kit. You’ll quickly overheat wearing it in less than freezing weather, but very that’s really not what the Nordic Heater is for. This may be the most expensive hat in our round up, but it is very much worth the spend if you regularly hike, camp, explore, work or even just walk the dog in sub-zero weather.

First impressions

The Penfield Harris Beanie is generously sized, slightly slouchy piece of headgear from an all-American outdoor brand. It has enough stretch to fit pretty much any head snugly, and the wide brim can easily be adjusted or worn down for a more relaxed look. The Harris is great value, and is available in six handsome colorways.

Look no further for your new wear-everywhere winter hat, because the Penfield Harris Beanie is perfect both for hiking and for casual day-to-day use. We’ve been testing out the Harris all this winter, and reckon it’s a very handy beanie to have in your hat arsenal – it fits nicely, stays put and we love its flecked wool looks.

The thick acrylic knit is warm and durable, and because the wool is synthetic rather than natural it feels very comfortable against the skin, and isn’t itchy at all. We found that the Penfield Harris Beanie protects the wearer’s ears really well, and instantly traps in heat, so it’s ideal for really bitter weather.

While absolutely fine under a waterproof jacket hood, this thicker knit is too bulky to fit under a bike helmet or ski helmet, which is a pity, and it’s a shade too warm for fast-paced winter sports as well – so save it for less energetic hiking outings and adventures, cold-weather camping and general outdoor use in the chilliest months.

Made with Páramo’s very clever Parameta G fabric, the Páramo Beanie is light, thin and simple looking, capable of boxing well above its weight in chilly conditions. The design of the material means it can keep you cosy when it’s cold, or allow cool air to flow to your scalp when it’s warmer.

It works thus: when worn beneath an outer shell (a jacket hood), the Páramo Beanie’s fleecy grid pattern traps air between the squares and your body heats it, encasing your head in a warm thermal bubble; but, if you wear it as a stand-alone hat, fresh air can permeate the fabric and cool your head (although, we think the latter part of this system works better in the brand’s brilliant base layers than it does in this hat – see below). Inside there’s a comfortable fleecy inner, which wicks moisture away well, and the fabric used throughout the beanie is comfortable and stretchy.

In the field

Weighing in at just 50g, the dual-layer Páramo Beanie is a brilliant buddy on outdoor adventures no matter where you’re going, or when. It provides a lot of warmth, despite its low profile, and fits well under a hood when you are walking in wilder conditions, or beneath a helmet when you’re cycling or climbing.

It also scrunches down really small and weighs very little, so it is perfect for popping into a pocket or pack whenever you’re heading out, whether it’s full-on winter conditions or springtime, when temperatures can plummet at the drop of a hat (or, indeed, beanie).

The Parameta G Fabric is clever, and the system certainly works when it comes to keeping your head extra warm, when this beanie is worn under a hat – in the same way that it performs brilliantly in the brand’s base layers (which we love). However, in this hat, we found the thermal fleecy inner lining prevents the cool air coming through quite as well. This is only a minor criticism really, since the main job of a beanie, so far as we’re concerned, is to keep your loaf warm – and very few people are going to wear this as a fashion accessory (it’s just not styled that way). However, it does mean that it’s a little too warm for high-energy activities, such as trail running.

First impressions

Fisherman beanies are having a bit of a hipster moment – and if you want to get in on the style action, the merino Finisterre Fisherman Beanie is a great choice. The Cornish company has made the hat from non-mulesed merino wool (mulesing is a surgical procedure performed on sheep that is considered cruel, so looking out for non-mulesed merino is definitely recommended) and is knitted in a stretchy, rib design, which is very comfortable to wear all day.

Merino is a brilliant beanie material, as it’s warm, non-itchy and is resistant to odour. It also retains heat, even when wet. Nine smart colorways are available for the Finisterre Fisherman beanie, from cheery yellow and red to more work-friendly grey and black.

In the field

The Finisterre Fisherman Beanie has a flattering shape and fits pleasingly snug to the head, instantly retaining heat. It’s made ethically, looks good, feels comfortable and keeps your ears and head warm during chilly autumn, winter and spring outings, which pretty much ticks all my boxes when looking for a hiking hat.

I have an average-sized head, and found that the Finisterre Fisherman Beanie fitted nicely – it’s not a bulky hat, but that’s rather handy when wearing it under a hood or popping it in a pocket when you’re not wearing it. But for some this particular design may prove too snug – it only comes in one rather small size, so it’s best suited to women or men with smaller heads.

The selection of colours is excellent, and there will be one here to suit everyone’s taste and outdoor wardrobe.

First impressions

Columbia are rightly proud of the Omni-Heat thermal reflective material they use to line the inside of their winter clothing, including this Heat beanie designed for use during outdoor-activity such as hiking and hill walking. The technology uses small silver dots to trap and reflect body heat effectively, keeping your head significantly warmer, but the nodules are so small and light that they don’t add bulk, and the hat is still breathable if you sweat.

The inside earband of the Columbia Heat Beanie is lined in a soft fleece, which is very comfortable. Our one complaint is that the Columbia brand name and logo are pretty prominent. If you don’t like looking like a walking brand endorsement you might want to go for a more subtly designed hat.

In the field

This lightweight beanie is ideal for use for during hiking adventures and winter sports, such as cross-country and downhill skiing, and other faster-paced adventures. It fits snugly on the head, rather like a skullcap, and sits neatly under a helmet. It also works well when worn with a headlamp.

We’ve been testing out this simple cap on trail runs and when walking at night with a headlamp, and have been impressed with how light it feels to wear – you’ll barely notice you have it on. The Columbia Heat Beanie is particularly good for early starts and late finishes, when the temperature drops significantly, but you might find it too hot once you’ve warmed up during intense activity – fortunately it’s light and easy to stash when that happens. It’s a nice hat to reach for again when you’ve finished exercising, as the thermal reflective lining instantly traps in your body heat and warms your head and ears. The fleecy earband is particularly snug.

Staying warm outdoors in winter just isn’t possible without a good hat. While the often-quoted figure of 50% of your body heat being lost through your head is a myth, it still represents a significant surface area of your body that needs covering, particularly if you’re bald! 

The best winter hats will not only keep you warm, they look good too. There are a range of designs to choose from. The beanie is a classic but you could also look at the likes of the trapper hat and watch hat too. When it comes to trapping the heat from your head, it's good to look for hats made from warm acrylic and wool blends that will also keep the wind from whistling around your ears. Here are the ones we’d recommend.

Bottom line

A good warm hat is essential for winter and we won’t leave the house without one. It doesn’t matter if you’re doing your favourite winter sport or just waiting for a bus, a warm head is vital for staying at a comfortable temperature whatever the weather is. We feel happiest pulling on the Carhartt Men's Acrylic Watch Hat A18. It’s a classic for a reason, coming from an iconic workwear company, fits well, and will see you through the cold.

Buy a hat. In fact, buy three: one for summer and two for winter – more on that later. They're an excellent addition to anyone's backpack. In summer, a sun hat comes into its own. You can channel your inner-Indiana Jones, as you scythe your way through the undergrowth or leap from rock to rock along the ridge. When your mate tackles a particularly tasty technical scramble, instead of saying "nice one", you can simply doff your hat at them. Much cooler.

We'd like to think this is exactly what Edward Whymper would have done during the Golden Age of Alpinism in the late 19th century. The central figure of the Matterhorn's first ascent wore a rather jaunty hat on his explorations of the Alps, as seen in the classic portrait of him from the time. If hats were in Edward Whymper's hiking backpack, they should probably be in ours too.

Why you should buy a hat for summer adventures

When we think of hiking hats, wooly beanies immediately spring to mind. Of course, these have their place in your summer day pack, especially if you're planning to ascend high into the mountains and into much colder conditions than those found in the valley. There are plenty of lightweight, breathable beanies on the market that do this job perfectly.

However, for the majority of summer hiking activities, a sun hat or a cap is what you'll require, giving you blessed shade from those relentless UV rays, as they finish their eight-minute journey to Earth from our rather large and bright celestial neighbour. Sun hats have the advantage of providing shade all of the way around and have saved many-a-neck from sunburn through the course of human history.

However, we hikers often find ourselves battling the wind. A sun hat's surface area means that is that it is likely to take off in a sudden gust, causing all manner of expletives. For trail runners, they're a complete no-go, for obvious reasons. Due to this, many outdoor lovers prefer a baseball cap that can be swivelled around depending on where the sun is coming from.

Why you should buy a hat for winter escapades

Okay, winter is a different ball game entirely. Other than to spice up your generic outdoor gear with some vibrant patterns (and maybe a pom pom or two), hiking hats are really useful for thermal regulation. By which we mean, putting a hat onto your head is a very effective way of keeping you warm overall. 

There's a bit of a myth associated with how much heat we lose through our heads, with many people believing we lose around half of our body heat from it. This is not true. In reality, the figure is closer to 10%. In terms of exposure to the cold, your extremities – fingers and toes – are the things you need to care for first, with your best hiking gloves and thick hiking socks rated for winter conditions.

Regardless, if you've gone to the trouble of putting on a couple of fleece jacket midlayers and windproof outer layer, leaving a hat off your head is like turning the heating up and leaving a window open. We always take a spare hat with us in the colder months. It's amazing how easily gloves and hats can get whipped away or left behind in winter conditions – and this is when you need them the most. 

To pom pom or not to pom pom, that is the question. For mulled wine and cider down the Christmas market with friends and family, go for it. We can't imagine anything more festive. However, in the mountains, a standard beanie has the advantage that it can comfortably slip under a helmet or a rain hood.

The final considerations are what material to go for and its thickness. If you move quickly in the hills and mountains, a relatively thin, breathable hat might be just the ticket. You can always bring a thicker hat as your spare and even swap it in when you know you're going to be stationary for a while. There's a range of materials available these days, from high-performing merino wool to synthetic fibers. It's really a case of personal preference, so find what's comfortable for you and stick with it.

There's one other, seriously luxurious option: nordic style hats that have fluffy inners and flaps for your ears. They offer serious warmth in cold conditions, basically feeling like a furry animal is giving your head a lovely hug. Like pom pom hats, they're not great under hoods and helmets though...

So if you aren't already a hat wearer, maybe consider bringing one of your next winter trip outdoors. You might be surprised how much of a difference it makes.
