First impressions

Helly Hansen is one of the world's oldest and most trusted outdoor brands.

The Norwegian stalwart was founded in 1877 by sea captain Helly Juell Hansen, who wanted a better way to protect himself from the harsh conditions at sea. Tired of toiling in soaking clothes, Hansen and his wife, Margarethe, created innovative waterproof jackets and pants to protect sailors from the wind and waves while they worked.

In the almost 150 years since, Helly Hansen has earned a stellar reputation for creating comfy and reliable outdoor apparel for people preparing to get out and take on the elements, gear such as the new Tech T-shirt 2.0.

I was lucky enough to snag two Tech 2.0 T-shirts in June, when I joined the AQA hiking charity for their ascent of Ben Nevis, in Scotland.

Following my trip to the Highlands, I've put the Colbalt and Grey Fog colorways to the test over plenty of high-intensity treks and trail runs in the English countryside. I was treated to plenty of varied weather in testing, including several rainy days and a scorching heatwave.

Fit and comfort

There's little worse than an ill-fitting T-shirt on the trails. Too small and you can feel constrained, but too big and you can feel like you're drowning in excess material.

The Tech 2.0 T-shirt dodges these problems with a comfortable fit that feels snug in all the right places without getting too tight. True to size, it fit nicely around my stomach, chest, and shoulders without constraining my movements.

I'm often irritated by the sleeve lengths of outdoor tops, which can be unfashionably baggy or rise so high up my upper arms that they feel like a vest. The sleeves on the Tech 2.0 T-shirt strike a happy medium, falling a couple of inches above my elbow and exposing a little upper arm without riding onto my shoulders.

For reference, I'm 6ft 1in tall, and wore a size medium throughout testing.

The 100%-recycled polyester material was also comfortable and never caused any irritation or chaffing. I wouldn't describe it as soft, but it felt pleasant enough against my skin, and gets my seal of approval for its effective moisture-wicking and quick-drying performance on the trails.

The Tech 2.0 T-shirt obviously isn't waterproof or water-resistant in any way, but the fabric is hydrophobic and the garment sheds rain pretty quickly, and always dries off a few minutes after a downpour. I really appreciated this on long, hot treks, when more absorbant fabrics would've been weighed down by sweat.

The Tech 2.0 is still comfortable after multiple hours of testing and hasn't taken any significant damage. The fabric feels the same as it did when I first put it on, and design features, like the stylish printed Helly Hansen logo, look unblemished.

It's impossible to say what my Tech 2.0 will look like in a few months, but polyester offers excellent long-term durability.

Weight

At 6.7oz (190g), the Tech 2.0 T-shirt starts off lightweight, and it doesn't get soaked with sweat or rain. My T-shirts proved light and airy in all manner of weather conditions, and I never felt like it was weighing me down.

First impressions

A good cap can be a godsend in the wilderness. Whether you're racing through the trails or navigating the wild while you hike, you never know when the sun will make an appearance, and you'll need some portable shade.

Running and hiking caps come in all shapes and sizes, but my favorite models are lightweight and easily portable, so you can chuck them in a backpack without adding unnecessary bulk to your load.

The Helly Hansen Cascade Shield cap ticks both boxes, weighing just 1.8oz (50g) and featuring a minimalist combination of polyester and elastane materials. So you can fold up your cap and stuff it in your backpack or pocket without a second thought.

The breezy exterior offers a decent amount of protection from the elements. Along with its sizable brim, it's coated in Durable Water Repellency (DWR) treatment, designed to shield you from wet weather on the trails.

Inside, there's a moisture-wicking inner headband in place to deal with sweat from your head to avoid saturation and extra weight.

Helly Hansen Cascade Cap: on the trails

I got my hands on the Cascade Shield Cap in June, when I accompanied the AQA community hiking charity on a Ben Nevis trek supported by Helly Hansen.

In the time since, I've taken it on plenty of hikes and runs, putting this lightweight cap to the test in the varied weather of an English summer, which included a scorching heatwave and several rainy days on the trails.

Here's how it performed:

Fit and comfort

The Cascade Shield cap is a comfortable choice for protecting yourself from the sun.

Its polyester and elastane materials are lightweight and stretchy enough to fit snugly without feeling too heavy, and the thicker moisture-wicking inner headband added a nice bit of additional support. The handy back buckle provides a simple and effective way to tighten the headband, which wrapped nicely around my skull and never felt like it would fly off when I ran into strong winds.

My cap remained snug throughout testing, and the back buckle didn't loosen after plenty of runs and lengthy hikes.

The polyester material inside the cap is soft to the touch and never felt uncomfortable on my head, but did get a little sweaty on particularly hot days.

Due to its lightweight build and a few handy ventilation holes, overheating was never too much of an issue, but the top of the cap certainly doesn't have the same effective sweat-wicking as the inner band, which kept sweat from dripping into my eyes.

Protection from the elements

You never know when the heavens are going to open, and the cap's water-resistant DWR coating did a good job of keeping my hair dry in light rainfall, and put up a decent fight when it got a little heavier.

This cap isn't waterproof, so it won't do much downpour, but it offers some useful extra protection if you're caught in an unexpected shower without a raincoat or waterproof cap.

Like all DWR products, its water-resistant coating will fade over time and needs to be reapplied if you want to keep benefiting from its protection in the rain.

Weight and portability

At 1.8oz (50g), the Cascade Shield cap isn't as airy as some models like the Sealskinz Runham cap, but can still be considered lightweight and feels almost unnoticeable on the trails. It also has a bit more protection than the Runham cap, which is slightly thinner and doesn't have a DWR coating.

For this reason, the Cascade Shield is a great option for trail runners and hikers who want to shave every gram, but still need a little protection from the elements.

Its polyester brim is a touch thicker and heavier than the rest of the cap, but still felt light and provided ample shade as I navigated some sweltering days on the trails.

The Cascade Shield cap is great for adventurers on the go. You can fold, roll, or even scrunch it up and throw it in a backpack without adding any noticeable weight. When I didn't fancy wearing it, I'd often keep my cap in my pocket, where it took up little space and again felt unnoticeable.

I found this really useful as I sometimes trek without a backpack, and don't want to hold my cap when I'm not wearing it.

Price

One of the few things holding the Cascade Shield cap back is its price tag.

While $55 (£32) isn't extortionate, it certainly puts the Cascade Shield cap on the higher end of the price range, and might put you off given the other, cheaper options on the market.

For example, you can get your hands on the Salomon XA, another high-quality cap with many of the same features as the Cascade Shield, for as little as $25 (£22).

It's a shame that this cap isn't similarly priced. Helly Hansen gear is often expensive, but the Cascade cap wouldstand out from the crowd more if it cost just a few dollars less.

It's a windy June day on Britain's tallest mountain. While the rest of the country enjoys a pleasant afternoon of sunshine, I'm wrapped from head to toe in layers of insulating hiking gear, battling the biting mountain breeze halfway up Ben Nevis.

A fellow hiker, whom I've just met and walked with, is struggling. She's not used to the mountains and complains of tired legs and a tight chest, suggesting it would be better for everyone to go on without her. Before I can offer advice, a warm voice interjects from over my shoulder.

"We do this together, or we don't do it at all," says another newly-acquainted trekker, eager to encourage his struggling companion.

Neither are experienced hikers, but both are in it together as members of the AKA community, an outdoors charity that helps people from all walks of life find friendship and let go of stress in the wilderness.

In a post-COVID world, remote areas like the Scottish Highlands have become something of a sanctuary for people who want to escape the troubles of everyday life.

A 2024 survey from Helly Hansen found that 37% of participants saw improvements to their mental well-being after spending time in nature, and plenty of other research backs up the various physical and mental benefits of hiking, trail running, and other outdoor pursuits.

However, access to the wild isn't a privilege that everyone gets to enjoy. In the same Helly Hansen survey, 53% of participants acknowledged that there were financial barriers to the outdoors, and 40% pointed to a lack of transportation.

That's where AKA comes in. The British charity aims to help city-dwellers of all ages and backgrounds lace up their hiking boots and hit the trails without breaking the bank. It provides guidance and transport to help eager trekkers get to the countryside for regular community hikes and other outdoor activities.

Along with the physical and mental benefits of spending time in nature, founders Antwon Bonnick, Kevin Spriggs, and Anton Brown are keen to foster a sense of community, bringing people together and breaking barriers on the trails.

The AKA charity

I'm lucky enough to join AKA on their most ambitious trek yet: a trip to the top of Britain's tallest mountain. The expedition is supported by Helly Hansen, who have provided funding and kit as part of their Open Mountain Month, which encourages people to get out of the house and explore their nearest wilderness area.

As we trudge through the opening sections, Anton tells me about the group's humble beginnings and the former colleague who inspired the boys to explore their love of nature.

“He used to come into the office every day in his outdoor gear, hiking shoes, big bags, coats, and was always encouraging us to come out with him. But we were 18, 19 at the time, city boys, so we used to laugh it off," he recalls.

“About seven years ago, he passed away on a hike. He had an underlying health issue, ended up having a heart attack, and fell off the ridge. So we did a walk in memory for him, we did the Peak District, Mam Tor, Edale, it was about a 12-mile walk."

The boys' memorial walk opened their eyes to the benefits of spending time in nature and fostered a passion for hiking together.

"Obviously, physically it's fantastic, but mentally it's amazing," says Anton. "Especially being from the city, which is fast paced, just being out there and coming back with that level of calmness and tranquility. We felt like we needed to open that up and share that with the community, so that’s what we started to do."

Community is key to the AKA ethos. The charity brings people of all different ages and walks of life together to enjoy days spent on the trails and in the mountains.

“One thing we have in common is we’re all human, it's about human connections," says Anton.

“Once you remove barriers, you realize that everyone’s the same.”

So does it work? The community members seemed to think so. As we cross the rushing currents of the Steall Waterfall, one walker tells me: "I just turned up one day and made friends, just through meeting people you wouldn't ordinarily meet. And some have remained good friends."

Another, very out-of-breath trekker, praises the benefits of spending time in nature, saying: "There's so much science surrounding the connection between humans and nature. There's a reason we're happier when we see green, and there's a reason we're happier when we're outside."

Heading towards the roof of the Highlands

Scaling Ben Nevis is no easy feat, especially for a mixed ability group like AKA's. We're led through the rocky paths and violent winds by two expert mountain guides - Jim Bunting from Assynt Mountain Rescue and part-time guide Andy Reeve.

Bunting, who's constantly in the mountains of Northern Scotland in his capacity as a rescuer, is accompanied by mountain rescue dog Abhaiin (pronounced Ah-vin), who's trained to sniff out and locate missing trekkers in the mountains.

The excitable springador (red labrador and springer spaniel mix) has gone through hours of expert location training and can find a missing person or item of clothing from over 1,000ft (304.8m) away.

With Jim and Andy's expert advice and a few barks of encouragement from Abhaiin, most of the group are able to make it all the way to the summit, where they're greeted with breathtaking views of the jagged peaks and glistening lakes of the Scottish highlands.

Wearing the right kit

Despite the surrounding beauty, conditions at 4,413ft (1,345m) are unforgiving. While temperatures on the ground sit around 68°F (20°C), the summit has dipped below freezing and is made even colder for the summiteers by the presence of blistering 50mph (80.5kmph) winds.

Conditions on Britain's tallest mountain are unforgiving all year round.

I took on Scotland's Ben Nevis last month, and despite it being June, temperatures were touching freezing, with biting winds up to 50 miles per hour (80.4kmph). There was also the constant rainfall, which was often light and occasionally very heavy.

Helly Hansen Verglas Down Jacket 2.0: first impressions 

When it comes to choosing a new down jacket, most of us just want one reliable puffy that will work for everything, and this jacket is a strong contender for that role.

Whether you're hiking in winter and need an insulating layer under your hardshell or just want something to throw on when you're on belay or sitting on the deck at après, the Helly Hansen Verglas 2.0 is warm enough to protect you against the elements but light and packable enough to be versatile.

With 700 fill power responsibly sourced down, this jacket provides enough heat to be worn as an outer layer or mid layer, depending on the season and conditions. It's made with hydrophobic down, which means it doesn't clump together if it gets wet from sweat or rain, and that means it keeps you warmer, longer.

The ripstop shell isn't too fragile compared to other down jackets and it's treated with a PFC-free DWR to fend off a light rain storm should you encounter one without a waterproof jacket.

The athletic fit is easy to layer and the high collar keeps you well protected from the wind. There are two hand warming pockets plus a handy inner chest pocket for your phone. If you're traveling or backpacking, the whole thing packs into its pocket and can be clipped to your backpack with a carabiner, or even double as a makeshift camping pillow if you're in a pinch.

We've worn this skiing and hiking and can't find much to complain about except that it leaks a little down so might need a refresh eventually. It's also available in a hooded version if you plan to wear it more as an outer layer, but we like the non-hooded version for layering.

I've been testing the women's Verglas 2.0 in cactus and this down jacket has quickly become my go-to insulating layer this winter. I've worn it as a mid layer on cold, snowy winter hikes in Scotland, brought it along as my outer layer for après during a few days skiing in Chamonix and have honestly worn it around the house quite a bit during this long, cold season.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a small which is my usual size and I'd say it's about perfect. It's a slim-fitting jacket with plenty of room for me to wear it over a base layer, which is pretty much what I always do (though I occasionally squeeze a light fleece in there too) and it's not so puffy that I can't easily wear a waterproof over the top.

It doesn't come down really low at the back, but I'd say it's a standard length for a down jacket and I love the nice, high collar which keeps my neck warm when it's windy, which is always in Scotland.

The fabric is really soft in the places where it touches my touch skin, especially around the collar, and all in all it's just a light, cozy layer that feels good to wear.

Warmth, breathability and protection

With 700 fill power, it's warm and I feel the benefit of it as soon as I put it on. But as you may know, down jackets can be fickle if they get wet. Basically, if the down gets wet then it clumps together and doesn't do its job as well. The Verglas 2.0 is made with hydrophobic down, which means it doesn't get as clumpy and continues to insulate when wet. It's also treated with DWR for added protection.

Any time it's raining, I wear a waterproof over the top, but I still managed to test this feature about a month ago, when I was on a vigorous hike in very cold weather. I wore this jacket over a synthetic base layer and my Sasta Peski Jacket over the top. I got pretty sweaty, which you can actually see a little in the photographs I've used in this review, but I never got cold, even when I was back at the trailhead so that was a good test.

That hike was also a good way to test the breathability of this jacket. In general, down isn't always the most breathable and I often save puffers for hanging around at camp and wear fleece as a mid layer for more strenuous activities. However, I've been pretty pleased with the breathability of this jacket and would happily wear it for winter hikes and downhill skiing.

Weight, storage and other details

This isn't the lightest down jacket I've ever tested (read on to find out which is), but this one is still impressively light on the scale at under 300 grams in my size. A lot of jackets claim they stuff into their own pockets and I usually have a hard time making it happen, but this one quite easily packs away. It has a little loop so I can clip it to my backpack if I want to, and in a pinch it could even make a camping pillow, though it's not the most comfortable.

It's a fairly straightforward jacket in terms of other details, but has plenty of pockets for everything I want to stash and I really appreciate the inner zipped chest pocket where I can keep my phone close and warm or my credit card and hotel room key for après.

This isn't a technical detail, but the jacket has good eco creds too, made with sustainable down, PFC-free DWR and recycled materials, which is something I look for in my outdoor gear.

The bottom line is that this jacket is a real contender for your next go-to puffy, the one that hangs on the hook by the front door ready for whatever snow shovelling, dog walking, skiing, hiking or grocery shopping adventure life throws at you. It's light enough to layer and warm enough to make a difference, not too fragile and versatile enough for multi-use.

Helly Hansen Odin Everdown hooded jacket: first impressions

As a journalist in the outdoor industry, I’m constantly testing products that promise to change the game. And as much as this is a dream job, it has had the rather unfortunate effect of turning me into a bit of a sceptic, because so very few products tend to deliver on these claims. Occasionally, however, something properly novel comes down the pipeline that blows me away – as was the case with the phenomenal Zenbivy Ultralight Bed last year. And now, to kick off 2025, Helly Hansen have managed to do it with the Odin Everdown jacket.

In a nutshell, the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown down jacket is a warm outer layer for chilly mountaineering, backpacking or wild camping trips. Which, in itself, is nothing revelatory – that’s what a down jacket’s supposed to be. Where the Odin Everdown properly breaks the mold is in delivering heavyweight warmth in a package that’s literally as light as a sheet of feathers.

Seriously, in medium, this weighs a jaw-dropping 313g. To put that in perspective, that’s lighter than a single can of Coke – or less than half the weight of the similarly warm Mountain Equipment Lightline (which comes in at 790g). This is thanks to Helly Hansen’s use of THINDOWN, an insulator that combines the utility of synthetic insulation with the weight and packability of down. Pitched as “the world’s first real down fabric”, THINDOWN is more akin to polyester insulation than it is to down feathers, comprising 100% stitched down that’s molded into panels. The result is a natural insulator that’s twice as warm as loose down and four times warmer than polyester – allowing Helly Hansen to make a jacket that’s incredibly light and packable for its warmth – and winning the brand a coveted ISPO Award in 2023.

All of this game-changing tech does come at a cost, though. The Helly Hansen Odin Everdown jacket will set you back a hefty £400 when bought directly from Helly Hansen. This is £75 more than the RRP of a Rab Neutrino Pro and £140 more than the RRP of the aforementioned Mountain Equipment Lightline – two jackets that, in my experience, offer a comparable level of warmth.

If you’re looking for something with an equivalent weight, your main option is going to be something like the Ghost Whisperer 2 from Mountain Hardwear, which has an RRP of around £300 and weighs a teeny tiny 246g. In my experience, though, Mountain Hardwear’s prized design doesn’t even come close to delivering comparable levels of warmth to the Everdown, with the Ghost Whisperer being more of a spring/summer/fall layer compared to the Everdown’s ability to keep you warm in temperatures well below zero. All of this hopefully illuminates why I think this jacket is actually well priced for what it delivers, which is something I never thought I’d write about a £400 coat.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a sample of Helly Hansen’s Odin Everdown jacket back at the start of November 2024. It arrived just in time for some seriously cold weather, which meant I could properly put the warmth claims of this coat to the test. In total, I used it on an untold number of cold winter walks around my home near the Chiltern Hills in England; on a skiing trip in the Alps where it became my go-to jacket for practically everything; for a deep winter wild camp on Dartmoor in south-west England where the temperature dropped down to around 21°F (-6°C) Celsius; and for keeping me toasty warm on a few wanders in Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) in Wales – including a hike up Pen y Fan in rare snowy conditions. And all in, it left me nothing but impressed.

The first thing I really appreciated about the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown jacket was the fit. It’s tight enough to lock in warmth, yet baggy enough that you can comfortably layer up underneath. It’s also comfortable under both a pack or a hardshell, with no surplus toggles, zips or pockets that dig into you while you walk. For added warmth, the back of the jacket comes down a little to fully cover your waist and to provide some extra protection to the tops of your butt cheeks. What’s more, the cut of the wrist cuffs is such that the internal down panelling drops down a little over your hands which, in my opinion, makes the coat noticeably warmer around the wrists.

When it comes to features, though, I was initially underwhelmed with the Odin Everdown’s offerings. It comes with two hip pockets, one central zip, a hood, a RECCO reflector and a stuff pouch. And that’s it. There are no zippers on the pockets and there’s no internal stuff pocket. There aren’t even toggles on the hood to tighten it down in high winds, nor are there cuffs on the wrists. It’s the most simplistic jacket I’ve ever come across, which I came to appreciate the more I wore it – even if I was a little surprised at first.

You see, Helly Hansen have worked to create the lightest, warmest jacket out there; a layer that delivers more warmth per gram than any other on the market. And even though I’ve not tested every down jacket available today, I’ve yet to come across something that even comes close. And you know what? I never zip up pockets or use those stuff pockets anyway.

Helly Hansen Odin Everdown hooded jacket: THINDOWN

While we’re on the subject of features, it’s worth doing a deep dive into the biggest ‘feature’ of this coat: the THINDOWN insulation that makes it what it is.

This is a layer of RDS-certified goose down that’s touted as “the world’s first real down fabric”. Coming in rolls, the insulation is more akin to polyester than standard down feathers, an invention which has allowed Helly Hansen to make a down jacket that’s completely void of baffles. This pretty much eradicates any and all wind from entering your jacket and cooling you down, allowing the Odin Everdown to work well as a windbreaker as well as an insulating layer.

What’s more, thanks to the panel-like insulation, Helly Hansen have been able to evenly disperse the down throughout the coat, which eradicates cold spots and ensures more consistent insulation. In my experience, this has the added benefit of the jacket warming up immediately, practically at the point you first put it on (unlike in conventional down jackets where it can take a while for the feathers to catch your body heat and warm up).

All of which makes the Odin Everdown just as warm as any classic belay jacket you might use on a wild camp. For comparison's sake, I actually headed out on a hike in temperatures hovering around 27°F (-3°C) wearing just the Odin Everdown over a thin Icebreaker Merino base layer and I felt perfectly comfortable the whole time.

Around halfway I then swapped jackets and peeled on my Mountain Equipment Lightline – a beloved coat among winter wild campers and backpackers that’s about twice the size and weight of the Everdown. And, again, I was comfortable – not warmer, not sweatier: I was just as warm and comfortable as I was in the Everdown, despite the Lightline being more than twice as big and twice as heavy.

Now, granted, this wasn’t exactly a scientific analysis, but my experience with the Everdown over the last three months has given me just as much confidence in its ability to keep me warm as I’ve built up in the Mountain Equipment Lightline over the years. So much so, in fact, that I can’t think of a reason I’d ever opt for the heavier Lightline again, with the Odin Everdown now poised to become my go-to warm layer on winter wild camping and backpacking trips from here on.

When it comes to packability, this is another way in which the Odin Everdown really stands out from the crowd. In medium, this jacket packs down smaller than a Patagonia Nano Puff, a three-season stand-out mid layer that’s long been praised for its size and weight. When fully compressed, the Odin gets down to about the size of a mango, which is jaw-dropping for a coat that delivers as much warmth as it does.

To sweeten the deal even more, it also weighs a barely noticeable 313g. At this weight, it’s kinda pointless opting for anything else – even if you’re heading out on a hike in warmer conditions where you probably won’t need anything this warm. Hell, at 313g, you could also incorporate the Everdown into your fastpacking or bikepacking setup, which (to me), makes it one of the most versatile warm layers available.

As is the case with most jackets in this category, the Everdown is not waterproof. The nylon outer is reasonably water repellent to the odd droplet, but I found it quickly wets out in any real rain. Therefore, if you’re heading into wet environments, it’s crucial that you pair this with a shell or keep it in your pack until the weather dries out.

For a jacket this light and packable, I found the Odin Everdown to be reasonably durable. Featuring a 10-denier ripstop Nylon outer shell, it’s tough enough for day-to-day use and for wear in the mountains, although you wouldn’t want to wear it while bushwhacking. A rogue thorn or a misplaced bit of barbed wire will easily put a hole in the Odin Everdown, so consider pairing it with a hardshell if you’re walking through dense woodland or wearing it anywhere it could get snagged. Unlike regular down jackets, though, the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown comes with THINDOWN panelling, so feathers won’t spew out of this coat should you rip it. Much like with polyester insulation, the jacket is still perfectly capable of keeping you warm even if a small hole develops (although I, thankfully, haven’t been able to test this claim, yet).

In a nutshell, I love the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown. It’s the lightest and most packable down jacket I’ve ever come across, delivering levels of warmth that rival coats twice its size. It promises next-level warmth to weight, and in my experience, it delivers exactly that. Honestly, I think this is the new benchmark when it comes to warm winter down jackets for backpacking, mountaineering and wild camping. And because it ticks so many boxes I fully expect the Everdown to become the only jacket I ever pack from here on out whenever it’s set to get a little chilly – whether I’m going fastpacking or bikepacking in milder spring temperatures or heading out on a deep winter wild camp. Granted, at $450/£400 this coat isn’t cheap, but for the amount of use you’ll be able to get out of it, I think it’s a worthy investment if you can comfortably afford it.

• How Advnture tests products

Few European ski resorts are as legendary as Chamonix. Official estimates say the area hosts 60,000 visitors a day during the busy winter months, many of whom come here to experience its renowned opportunities for extreme freeride skiing. But despite those impressive visitorship numbers, for the past 15 minutes skiing top to bottom, I haven’t seen a single other person.

Though I've visited the Chamonix-Mont Blanc Valley several times in the summer for trail running, hiking and mountaineering, this is my first winter trip. I've never been able to quite get my head around its sprawling array of slopes and ski areas, so I'm here with the ski brand Helly Hansen to see just how much of it I can fit into three days.

According to my Coros Pace 3, and the burning in my thighs, the run from the top of the gondola at Les Houches, down to the bottom of the Bellevue cable car was nearly six kilometers. It’s a quiet day in general, despite the brilliant sunshine and a blizzard the day before that refreshed the slopes, and after I left the top, where families were exploring the beginner's area, it emptied out completely. It could be eerie but I have a penchant for solitude, so I’m giddy with the novelty of having what seems like the whole resort to myself.

Towards the bottom, the snow starts to get a little sketchy – the commune of Les Houches only sits at around 3,300ft – so I slow down and gently skid to a halt outside the Kitsch Inn, a cheerful retro-vibed bar advertising happy hour and burgers. It’s a little early for that, so I remove my skis and walk around to the gondola station to head back up, taking in the quaint village of pretty wooden houses, fromageries, and chapels sitting quietly in the shade of the mountain.

After climbing the stairs, I scan my lift pass at the turnstile and receive a message informing me the gondola is full. This seems unlikel,y but before I can trek back down the metal stairs in my ski boots to inquire at the ticket office, several local skiers troop in and arrange themselves in an orderly line. They look like they know what they’re doing, so I step in behind them and soon we’re joined by a rambunctious crew of adolescents dressed in Nordic gear for a day of training.

A few minutes pass before the door on the other side of the turnstile slides open and to my surprise I realize that it’s not a typical gondola I’ve been waiting on at all but a large single cablecar that holds 37 passengers at once. We all pile in followed by the driver who secures the door and sits down behind the wheel and we’re off, slowly trundling up the mountain.

The Bellevue cable car first opened in 1936, built by Charles Viard who brought the first cablecar to France. It climbs over 2,600 feet and was first imagined as a means to connect with the existing Mont Blanc Tramway and provide easier mountaineering access to those who wished to climb Mont Blanc.

It’s the backdrop of mountaineering that gives Chamonix its distinctive unshrinking character. People have been traveling here to explore the soaring peaks and glaciers of the Mont Blanc Massif since at least the 1700s, and by the end of the 19th century, many had realized the slopes were also ideal for the burgeoning sport of alpine skiing. The first cablecar here opened in 1924, the same year that Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympics, and the valley secured its reputation as the heartbeat of alpine skiing.

Today “Cham” as the locals know it is well-served by regular international flights to Geneva airport, just over an hour away by road. Chamonix is the name of the main town in the Chamonix-Mont Blanc Valley, home to five main ski areas which are served by one lift pass, and opportunities to ski into neighboring Switzerland and Italy.

Le Tour and Vallorcine

Our first stop was Le Tour and Vallorcine (known together as Domaine de Balme), where we met ski patrol at 6:30 a.m. to help them open the mountain in what turned out to be whiteout conditions.

While the valley slept, we snuck in a few thrilling turns in ever-deepening snow. By the time the lifts opened, visibility was close to zero so I couldn’t say for sure, but the brochure assures me the area is known for cruisy blues and easy reds, making it a great place for intermediate skiers.

Les Grand Montets

That afternoon, we made our way over to Les Grand Montets to meet the amazing avalanche dogs of Chamonix. The sun finally punched its way through the clouds revealing the splendor of what’s considered the freeride center of the valley.

Les Grands Montets is one of the largest pisted skiing zones in the area. Due to its shady northwesterly aspect, snow here tends to stick around longer than anywhere else in the valley so it's ideal if you’re going out later in the season. If the snow is too sticky Les Marmottons Bar and Restaurant is right at the bottom of the cable car with abundant outdoor seating, grub and cold beers for Après.

Brévent

The next day, we visited Brévent for a slalom-style competition with celebrity ski instructor Warren Smith, who had driven over the border from Verbier to help us hone our skills.

Along with adjacent Flégère, Brévent is the closest area to Chamonix town center at about a 15-minute walk (without ski boots) and boasts a mix of steep pistes and longer, flowing groomers.

This area sits on the sunny, south-facing side of the valley so the snow is already soft at 10:30 a.m. Being the recipient of several knee surgeries, I cut the competition short and sneak off for a few laps of the Cornu chairlift which delivers some stunning Black runs and access to off-piste magic.

However, it’s the second-to-none views of Mont Blanc that make Brévent truly special. Even if the line looks long, no visitor should miss the experience of riding the Brévent cable car up to a viewing deck which delivers the best view of the peak in the area, and it’s clear that many visitors are here for the views and the food, not the skiing. Fair enough.

Les Houches

On my last day, I break off from the group and head to Les Houches which turns out to be my favorite. The treelined, cruisy blues and greens match my mellowing approach to alpine skiing and remind me of Colorado pistes but with the quaint charm of an alpine resort that’s not been messed about with too much over the decades. It’s ideal for beginners, solo skiers and anyone who wants to go at their own pace.

When I reach the top of the Bellevue cable car here, I take a few minutes to drink in the imposing presence of Mont Blanc and watch some Nordic skiers set off on uphill adventures. It’s hard not to imagine Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard tackling it for the first ascent nearly 230 years ago without all the technical fabrics and RECCO reflectors keeping me safe and comfortable today, and easy to appreciate what modern innovation has done for mountaineering.

The days are still short in January, so soon I ski back across the plateau where the top of Les Houches isn’t bustling, but lightly simmering with happy families queuing for espressos and sodas. After a few more cruisy laps I sit out on the terrace at Hotel Le Prarion and catch the last of the sun with a cold drink to refresh me before another six-kilometer descent which delivers me right onto the local bus. Free with my ski pass, I’m back at the Big Sky hotel in 15 minutes and there’s plenty of time for a soak in the hot tub before dinner.

It’s taken me years to get my head around Chamonix, but on this trip, I’ve figured out that while it has many faces, its sprawling nature doesn’t have be overwhelming – it just means there are countless ways to do it.

Like me, you can take the buffet approach and tour different areas for a new flavor each day, but I’d recommend you find accommodation close to the bus line if you do. Taxis here are expensive and can be hard to come by, but the buses run regularly. An easier option is to pick the ski area you want to explore and find accommodation nearby, skipping any further travel once you arrive.

The easy connections make it possible to come here for a long weekend and be back at your desk on Monday morning – the question is, will you ever want to go home?

Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated Ski Pants: first impressions

Calling any piece of kit "legendary" is a bold move, but we have to admit we're pretty impressed with these ski pants from Helly Hansen. The bestselling Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated ski pants have enough Primaloft insulation to keep you warm in sub-zero temps (over thermals, that is) but they're not bulky at all.

They're made from a soft, comfortable shell material that's not too swishy when you're walking from the parking lot to the gondola and will keep the wind and wet snow at back.

With lots of stretch, articulated knees and opportunities to adjust the waistband, it's easy to find a really comfortable and flattering fit with these pants where you can walk, ski and adjust your bindings. They're not loose and baggy, but there's still plenty of room for layering and, remarkably, they're really easy to fit over ski boots even without ankle zips.

Worn without thermals, it's quickly clear that these pants could be more breathable, but that's not something you're likely to notice when you're skiing with base layers, and if you do, they have inner thigh zips for cooling off.

Even though they're soft and light to the touch, the ankle/calf area is reinforced so the area that comes most into contact with your ski boots and skis is protected, meaning they're more rugged than they appear.

Four zipped pockets are adequate for stashing gear, though for ski pants we tend to find a thigh pocket is handier for a phone, but let's be honest, most gear is going in your ski jacket pockets anyway. We're glad to see that these pants are Bluesign-approved and for such a versatile and high-performing piece of kit think they're quite reasonably priced, too.

Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated Ski Pants: in the field

After a couple of seasons of skiing in the Helly Hansen Powderqueen Bibs, it was time for me to test something new so I brought these ski pants along for a five-day trip to Chamonix where I got to ski all five ski areas in whiteout conditions and bluebird days.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I’ve been testing a women’s small which is my normal size and while a lot of ski pants (and Helly Hansen pants) tend to run a bit big on me, I'm happy to report that these are perfect and fit true to size.

When I first pulled them on, I was a bit worried they were too big around the waist which meant the knees were in the wrong place, but I quickly discovered two hook-and-loop pull tabs that cinch the waist tighter (there are also belt loops if you need them) and that solved the issue.

They're not loose and baggy at all but are soft and tailored so that I can move freely in them and easily plop down in the snow to watch a ski racing competition thanks to the added stretch. They're really comfortable which isn't always the case with ski pants. I don't quite understand how they've done it, but even though there aren't any zips on the ankles they still fit really easily over my ski boots without appearing loose.

Weather protection and breathability 

These pants use Helly Hansen's proprietary Helly Tech Performance waterproof membrane instead of Gore-Tex and they're built to be waterproof, windproof and warm but also breathable. That's a tall order.

Luckily, I've been able to test them in pretty cold weather, one whiteout and in mild, sunny conditions to see how they hold up across the board. For skiing, I've always worn them with a pair of merino wool long underwear underneath them and they've always been warm enough. On the mildest day, I did unzip the thigh vents which let me stay comfortable, and they're treated with DWR which so far has been able to handle all moisture though I expect it will need to be reapplied at some point.

As for breathability, I've never had any issue on milder days thanks in part to the ventilation zips, but I must say that I threw them on without Long Johns to go down for breakfast at the hotel one morning and that did reveal to me that their breathability may be somewhat lacking.

Honestly, I'd never wear these for alpine skiing without an underlayer, but if you tend to ski without thermals it may be good for you to know. As I said, I was indoors in a heated space, and I don't think it would be an issue for alpine skiing, but it might present a slight problem for ski touring.

Weight, packability and storage

When compared to other ski pants we’ve tested, these are midweight at around 540 grams for women's and they definitely don't feel heavy on. For packing, I had a checked bag for the trip but I still wanted to travel light on transfers so I used my Fjallraven High Coast Duffel 36. I was able to roll these up to about the size of a Nalgene and they packed away neatly.

These pants have two zipped hip pockets plus one rear pocket, and while I just used my Helly Hansen Kvitfjell Race jacket for storage, I must admit I did miss having a thigh pocket for my phone, which I have on my Powderqueen bibs. Yes, I know it's better to keep my phone in the Life Pocket closer to hand, but the thigh pocket is really convenient.

Durability and value

As usual, there are a well-built pair of trousers from Helly but I did realize when I got home that I already have a small slash at the ankles, probably from a ski edge. This is a common occurrence and these pants have reinforced ankles to help with this so perhaps the reinforcements need to go up higher or perhaps I just need to be more careful. Other than that, they're looking great and I expect them to hold up for a while.

Often, a high-peforming and well-constructed pair or ski pants like this will set you back a pretty penny and Helly Hansen gear can be fairly pricey, but these ski pants are really reasonably priced and you get lots for your money.

Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated Ski Pants: the bottom line

Overall, these aren't the toughest or most technical ski pants on the market, but for most of us, they provide just what we need at a very fair price. They excel in comfort, are well-fitting and warm enough for more resort days. The only reason I wouldn't choose them is because I prefer bibs, and for that reason my Powderqueen bibs will win out most days, but I think there's a good reason why the Legendary pants are a bestselling item from Helly Hansen's catalog.

Helly Hansen Kvitfjell Race Insulated Ski Jacket: first impressions 

If you love skiing and you really love doing it in style, you're going to be sorely tempted by the Kvitfjell Race jacket. This ski jacket from Helly Hansen has already won awards and it's no surprise, given that it was designed with input from the Norwegian national alpine ski team. The professional advice is obvious in its high performance for resort skiing in all conditions.

Fully waterproof and packed with Primaloft Black Ocean Recycled insulation, we've never felt cold in this jacket, even in sub-zero temps and there's no need for a mid layer on milder days. Insulated jackets can pose a problem in the spring, especially if you want to ski hard, but we've found it's very breathable plus it has underarm vents when you overdress.

Because it was designed with ski racers in mind, this jacket won't hinder your mobility in any way. From the articulated sleeves to four-way stretch, you'll easily be able to adjust your boots and take on bumps if that's your thing.

Helly Hansen's ski gear is getting increasingly tech-heavy and this jacket is no exception. There's a RECCO reflector built into the hood in case you decide to go off-piste and get in trouble as well as a Life Pocket to keep your phone close to hand and stop it from dying in the cold. There's also a super handy phone leash so you'll never drop your phone from the chairlift again and a goggle wipe for powder days.

Pockets abound here – we've found six so far including a well-positioned lift pass pocket on the left sleeve – and you can reasonably leave your backpack at home even during a full day on the slopes. The hood is helmet-compatible thanks to an initially hard-to-find inner zip and the women's version has other women's specific adjustable details so it can be tailored to your body.

And then there's the aesthetics. This retro-styled jacket has classic good looks that make it a head-turning piece of gear and one you'll likely want to wear for years and years. That's a good thing too, because it's easily one of the most expensive ski jackets we've tested.

Helly Hansen Kvitfjell Race Insulated Ski Jacket: in the field 

I've loved skiing in my Helly Hansen Elevation Infinity 2.0 Ski Shell Jacket for the last couple of years so I was actually a little conflicted when I was offered this to test. Could I possibly like a jacket as much as the Elevation Infinity? What if I liked it more? There was only one way to find out, so I've taken this to Verbier and Chamonix this year and tested it in whiteout conditions and bluebird ski days.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a small in this jacket, which is my usual size, and I'm very happy with it. Ski clothes and Helly Hansen jackets are often a bit baggy on me, but this has enough room to wear over a wool base layer and my half-zip Daybreaker fleece without looking like I'm wearing my big brother's jacket.

It's got a real retro vibe so the fit is quite sleek and flattering rather than bulky and baggy, which is more functional for skiing and there's lots of stretch added for mobility.

I got to put this to the test on a busy press trip to Chamonix with the brand where we were moving around the mountain a lot with ski patrol. That involved a lot of taking my skis off and putting my boots in walk mode and I was able to move perfectly comfortably, even with lots of layers.

Weather protection and breathability 

As I mentioned, I've been used to skiing in a shell with lots of layers for a while, so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about going back to an insulated jacket. Would it be too warm?

Well, I can say that I've never been cold in this jacket, even without a few sub-zero days at the top of the chairlift, and in general, I do run a little cold, so that's a great start.

On my last two days in Chamonix, I went into autopilot and wore this over my fleece even though the temperatures were relatively mild. I'd overdressed and did find myself getting a little sweaty, especially because one day I was skiing Les Houches alone, it was quiet, and I was lapping runs at very high speed with very little waiting time between runs.

However, that gave me a good chance to test the breathability of the Primaloft insulation, and amazingly I didn't stay damp or get chilled when the temperatures started to drop at the end of the day. I was wearing merino wool against my skin, which certainly helped, and I was able to ski all day without having to tie my fleece around my waist and risk looking like a gaper.

In a more unusual test of this jacket's breathability, I got the unexpected opportunity to go ski touring when I was in Verbier but this was the only jacket I had brought with me on my trip. I'd usually go touring in a softshell, and it was snowing that day, so I threw this on over my Houdini Power Hoodie to get on the gondola thinking I would have to shed it and put it in my backpack once I got moving.

I skinned uphill for about 4.5k from the mid mountain gondola to a mountain hut. Amazingly, I never needed to take this jacket off off and just unzipped the vents. I'm not saying this is a touring jacket by any stretch, but it is breathable.

Weight and packability

This is an insulated ski jacket, so it's not going to be light compared to a shell or softshell and it's in line with other insulated Helly Hansen ski jackets like the Verbier Infinity in terms of weight.

That said, I've worn it for travel on a ski trip where I didn't want to check a bag and didn't find it particularly burdensome, and I recently rolled it up and managed to pack it in my Fjallraven High Coast Duffel 36 along with my other clothes for a flight. I do pack light and I don't want to give the impression that it's feather-light and super compressible, but for what it is I'd say it's an acceptable weight and size when packed.

Storage, hood and other features

For spending full days on the hill, I wanted to carry my neck gaiter, ski gloves, beanie, ski pass, phone, portable charger and cord and my wallet, and I really didn't want to wear a backpack. With all the pockets in this jacket, I managed that and still had room to spare.

I used the inner pocket for my charger and chest pockets for my phone and wallet. Then I still had the hand warming pockets free for my beanie and neck gaiter when I wasn't wearing them. Compared to my Elevation Infinity, the ski pass pocket has moved down to the forearm from the upper arm which is much more practical for boarding gondolas.

Some of the other pockets contain hand surprises too, from a goggle wipe in the left hand warming pocket which I used loads on powder days, to the phone leash in the life pocket which I thought was just genius for using my phone on the ski lift. That will save a lot of skiers a lot of money but make spring cleanup less lucrative!

The hood is obviously helmet-compatible because it's 2025 so I was surprised when mine kept coming down during a snowstorm. When I got back to the hotel I took a proper look and realized there's a zipper on the inside of the hood that you need to unzip to get the hood over your helmet properly in the first place, then you can tighten it. It works great, just not immediately obvious.

As for other features, there's a RECOO reflector built into the hood and I was pleased to see Chamonix ski patrol using the transceiver when I was there. This can really speed up the process of finding off-piste skiers if there's an avalanche and they don't have a beacon.

The only thing I can think of that's missing is a high vis detail which a lot of other Helly jackets have on the hood that makes you really easy to see in whiteout conditions, but I also get that it doesn't go with the awesome aesthetic of this smart-looking jacket.

Durability and value

Clearly I've only been testing this jacket this season so I can't hand-on-heart say it will last years, but based on its construction and my experience with Helly Hansen, I'm pretty confident in its ability to stand up to the test of time.

As for value, well the price is a little eye-watering and you can spend less on a perfectly good ski jacket and be happy. But, if you live to ski and want to look good and have access to all the latest tech? You'll love the retro vibe of this classic-looking jacket.

Helly Hansen Alpine Sock Technical: first impressions 

If there's one thing Norwegian brand Helly Hansen knows, it's how to keep people safe and comfortable in extreme environments – they outfit over 55,000 professionals globally including ski patrollers. And these technical ski socks are a great example of why the brand is so reliable when it comes to ski gear.

Built from a blend of merino wool and synthetic fabrics, these socks balance comfort and temperature regulation with durability. The snug, compressive design cradles your foot and lower leg without being too tight, and means there's no bunching or rubbing inside your boot, which is enhanced by the flat toe seam.

If you're wearing these for a day of alpine skiing, they'll reliably keep your feet warm during cold lift rides thanks to the merino wool, but that same material also helps to wick moisture and lets heat escape if you're working up a sweat on a ski touring adventure (this is also aided by breathable mesh panels on the top of the foot). I've been wearing these socks for winter adventures for the past two years, including two trips to Verbier (one frigid), several cold Nordic ski tours in Scotland, alpine touring in Switzerland in glacier trekking in the Alps.

Here's how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I have small feet. As in, my nine-year-old is nearly ready to start sharing my shoes, much to her delight. And sometimes, I find that even the smallest socks in adult sizing are too big, which is a problem when it comes to ski socks. Not with these, however. I've been wearing the smallest size, which is a US 4.5 - 5.5, and I'm pleased to say they fit perfectly.

These socks perfectly contour to my feet and lower legs. They are compressive, but not uncomfortably tight, and there's no extra material around my toes or heels. All of that means that when I'm making turns or cross country skiing, there's no unwanted friction or rubbing to ruin my day.

Are they puppy-soft? No, but basically, I can wear these all day without really noticing them or thinking about my socks, which is the next best thing. They're 32% merino wool, which doesn't seem to be enough for any itching.

Temperature regulation and moisture management

Compared to my other ski socks, I'd describe these as medium weight, and the merino wool content has been enough to keep my toes from freezing even in -19C conditions during dawn sweeps with ski patrol. However, since my true love is backcountry touring, it's important that my socks also keep my feet from getting too warm and sweaty and these socks are excellent at temperature regulation and moisture management.

Just a week ago, I woke up to very mild temperatures in Verbier. I knew this without checking the forecast because it was raining down in the valley. I had rented an AT setup the day before so I jumped on the Medran gondola anyway and by the time I reached mid-mountain, a light snow was falling. I took off for 4.4k of uphill in relatively mild conditions and at no point did my feet overheat, nor did they ever feel damp.

Durability and odor control

As I mentioned, I've been wearing these socks exclusively for winter adventures for the last two years, and they've held up brilliantly without much pilling or losing any elasticity. I do have a backup pair waiting in the wings but I don't expect to have to use them any time soon.

As for odor control, these socks perform like anything else made with merino wool – they don't stink. I honestly couldn't tell you if I've ever washed them, but I just gave them a good sniff and while I wouldn't say they're totally fresh, I'm quite happy to take them with me to Chamonix next week as they are.

A controversial investigation by animal welfare charity PETA has accused the wool suppliers of Fjallraven, Helly Hansen and several other outdoor brands of animal cruelty.

Claiming to go undercover on 11 New Zealand farms, PETA investigators have released film showing workers beating and stomping on sheep, and neglecting serious injuries, among other unethical practices.

PETA claims these farms produce ZQ-certified wool used by top brands like Fjallraven and Helly Hansen, which is supposed to be ethically sourced.

PETA said the brands were using "sham certifications to pull the wool over the eyes of caring consumers".

“On these humane-certified farms, sheep wraith in terror and pain while shearers pin them down by stepping on their necks,” it said in a statement.

“They’re slammed onto hardwood floors. Farmers trained by ZQ on how to handle the animals hit them with whatever is available, often just with their fists.”

The New Zealand Merino Wool company claims to verify that its ZQ-certified wool is produced ethically, with animal welfare and care for the environment taken into consideration.

However, PETA is yet to provide evidence that the farms investigated are actually ZQ-certified, nor that they are supplying any of the brands it named.

Only one farm is named in the expose, Hunter Valley Station Farm in Otago. And according to the New Zealand Merino Wool Company, this farm is not, and never has been ZQ-certified. The farm has said it is investigating the allegations.

In a statement issued to Advnture, Fjallraven said it was taking PETA’s claims "very seriously".

“Fjallraven is currently working with its supplier, The New Zealand Merino Company, to investigate these claims and determine whether the agreed-upon standards set by the ZQ certification have been violated,” it said, before re-iterating that the sole named farm was not ZQ-certified.

“Our commitment to animal welfare and ethical sourcing is unwavering. The recent allegations are deeply concerning,” said Fjallraven International CEO Martin Axelhed.

“Ethical sourcing and animal welfare are the foundation of our practices, and we will not compromise on these values.”

The named brands aren't the only ones disputing PETA's claims. Federated Farmers, an advocacy group for New Zealand's farmers has slammed the investigation as a 'disgraceful hit-job'.

"In reality, what you’re seeing in that video is a montage showing some isolated examples of poor practice that most Kiwi farmers simply wouldn’t put up with in their shearing shed," Meat and Wool Chair Toby Williams told the Herald.

"New Zealand farmers have incredibly high animal welfare standards and we take the responsibility of caring for our animals very seriously," he added.

Alongside releasing its claims online, PETA has submitted its findings to the relevant authorities, and New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries has already begun an investigation.

Advnture contacted Helly Hansen yesterday for comment. We'll update this article with any response as we get it.

Helly Hansen's new "lightest ever" Odin Everdown jacket is finally on the market, a year after winning an innovation award.

The hooded jacket was created in response to requests from mountain professionals for a very lightweight but still warm insulated jacket.

The result is the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown Hooded Jacket, which tips the scales at just 325g for the men’s large size and 275g for the women’s medium.

It’s the fill – called THINDOWN® – that has given HH the ability to offer such a good weight-to-warmth ratio. THINDOWN is described by the company as the “first real down fabric”.

In addition, the jacket has a lightweight but strong 10-denier ripstop face fabric made from 100% recycled nylon. A PFC-free DWR treatment on the exterior provides a layer of weather protection.

To further reduce weight, the jacket is a minimalist design with elastic at the hood, hem and cuffs, as well as zipper-free hand pockets.

What's more, there is not a shred of black fabric in sight, with a choice of bright colourways for both men and women in the Everdown jacket range. (It's much easier to spot mountaineers wearing bright colours than black.)

The Helly Hansen jacket was honoured with an ISPO Award in 2023, before it had even come to market. The judges said: “Helly Hansen presents a novelty with this highly functional, lined down jacket. The jacket does not require quilting thanks to innovative sheet insulation, which offers a number of advantages, both in production and application."

What is THINDOWN?

THINDOWN is natural down rather than synthetic insulation. Helly Hansen reveals that the uniform structure of the THINDOWN creates a "continuous and even distribution" of goose down and also eliminates the need for horizontal stitching. HH reports that stitching in a jacket can cause cool air to pass through to the body.

Added to this, unlike traditional down, the THINDOWN won't leak out if the face fabric is ripped or torn.

"We are inspired by creating solutions"

The Odin Everdown jacket was developed in response to requests from search and rescue teams and guides from brand partner Mountain Madness. They wanted warmth but in a lightweight product.

Sofia Jonsson, Category Manager for Outdoor at Helly Hansen, said: “Developing solutions for the professionals we work with is what continues to inspire and drive our design team.

“Our reliance on feedback and test sessions with people who spend most of their time in the mountains builds trust that we will provide what they need to stay and feel alive when they’re outdoors.”

Unpredictable mountain conditions call for reliable wet weather gear and these days, many of us are seeking a waterproof shell we can wear for life. New figures have emerged detailing the rate of drownings in the UK in 2022, and the data reveals that nearly half of the victims never intended to enter the water, ending up there due to causes like slips, trips, falls, changing tides and powerful waves. 

In response, sailing brand Helly Hansen recently teamed up with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in London to launch its annual water safety campaign. The launch took place at the Sky Pool in Embassy Gardens, a distinctive swimming pool suspended 115 feet in the air between two buildings that has transparent walls. During the event, RNLI lifeguards and professional sailors demonstrated the practice of learning how to float in water if you find yourself in trouble.

Though it's easy to panic if you end up in the water unexpectedly – or discover colder temperatures or stronger currents than you were prepared after intentionally entering the water – learning how to float can save your life. Attendee Michael Whitely, 65, credits the technique with keeping him calm and safe until the RNLI was able to rescue him at sea. 

Instead of struggling and exhausting yourself by trying to fight against the currents, the RLNI has the following FLoat to Live advice to anyone out of their depths in open water:

• Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
• Relax and try to control your breathing
• Use your hands to help you stay afloat
• Don’t worry if your legs sink – everyone floats differently

"Once you are through the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety if you can," adds Gabbi Batchelor, Water Safety Education Manager at the RNLI.

Already this year, we've reported on multiple water-related accidents, including a 59-year-old hiker who was swept downstream while trying to cross a river in Angeles National Forest in March. She has still not been found.

Among those present at the demonstration was sailor Jack Trigger, who says that the Float to Live technique applies to both everyone, including professionals like himself.

"Knowing how to float is a lifesaving skill we all should practice. Even as a professional sailor, it’s essential to include this in my training, should the worst happen.”

Helly Hansen Wool Beanie: first impressions 

A good beanie hat is crucial for anyone who wants to get outdoors year-round, but we all know that for such a simple piece of gear, it can be hard to find the perfect one. With this hat, Helly Hansen has gone all in on a simple design that works on a lot of heads. A simple fold up style adds warmth without bulk and a relatively snug fit means no extra fabric forming a meringue on the top of your head.

The key ingredient of this beanie is merino wool, which is warm and breathable, wicking moisture when you’re clambering up a steep slope so you don’t have to take it off on a cold day. It has all the benefits of wool without being itchy against your forehead, even when you get warm. It’s relatively light and low profile without being too thin and stays put in high winds without being too tight.

We’ve been testing this out in the mountains all winter and rarely get too warm in it, plus we love that its classic style and lack of giant logo which means we can wear it around town too. I’m a person that wears a beanie year-round, up a hill, in the house, on cool summer days as well as in winter, so I am always looking for that perfect hat and I have to admit, it’s a challenge. Some are too bulky and itchy, others have loads of extra material that sticks up making me look like a garden gnome, and my all-time favorite slouchy beanie blows away in the wind. I’ve been wearing this hat exclusively for three months now on hikes and around town.

Here’s how it performs:  

Sizing and fit 

This hat comes in one standard size and it’s perfect for me – snug enough to stay put but not too tight – and also on my boyfriend. I can imagine there are some exceptionally dimensioned craniums out there that this wouldn’t work for, but in general I think it’s a good fit for the majority of heads.

It’s got a snug fit – not slouchy, but also not skullcap-style and when I pull it all the way down it comes to the very top of my eyebrows which is nice if there’s a biting wind at a summit, but I usually push it back a little for comfort. It’s also not so bulky that I can’t easily pull up my hood when I’m wearing it.

It’s really flattering on, too, which means I’ve taken to wearing it around town as well as on a hike.

Comfort 

Speaking of comfort, this beanie is 100 percent merino wool. For me, that means it’s pretty comfortable against my skin and doesn’t itch. That said, if you’re sensitive to wool, and even merino, obviously this might itch and you’ll probably prefer a hat made from acrylic or fleece. It’s not as soft and comfortable as those fabrics, but I am able to wear it for hours on end without having to take it off and stuff it in my backpack because my forehead itches. 

Temperature regulation 

I think temperature regulation is where this hat excels for me. It’s definitely cozy on a really cold day, and we’ve had a lot of them this winter. That said, it’s not too thick and I don’t get too hot in it when I get sweaty on a cold hike. It’s got good breathability on those days and wicks sweat nicely. 

Odor control and durability 

Being made from merino wool, I’ve been wearing this non-stop for three months without washing it and it smells fine, which is good because I can’t be bothered washing it separately using wool detergent. In terms of durability, I wouldn’t say that it looks brand new anymore. It looks like a hat I’ve been wearing and carrying in my pack for a few months, but there’s no annoying loose yarn or pilling going on.

We’ve had nothing but rain in the UK lately, so I’ve been testing this jacket out in the hills of Scotland, the Dales of Yorkshire, the Lake District and even around the streets of Glasgow.

Here’s how it performed: 

Sizing and fit  

I usually wear a small and that’s what I tested. I’ve become accustomed to Helly gear running a bit large but for once, this jacket fits me perfectly. It’s neat-fitting, but there’s enough room for me to comfortably layer it over a fleece (and one one frosty walk I wore it over a  fleece and a down jacket). That said, if you tend to size down in Helly gear, you’ll likely find this too small for comfortable layering and movement.

Weight and packability

I certainly don’t pick up this jacket and think how heavy it is, but it’s a couple of ounces heavier than the Helly Hansen Odin 1 World Infinity Shell which I’ve also tested. For me, that’s not enough to make a difference, but if you’re looking for an ultralight shell, this isn’t for you. It might not roll up as tightly as something like my Montane Phase Lite jacket, but it’s more effective against extreme weather and it’s not bulky enough to make me reconsider packing it for long days and extreme weather.

Weatherproofing and breathability

I’ve had the chance to test this out on plenty of wet days now, including some of those sideways rainstorms that are common to Scotland and northern England. The membrane keeps the moisture out no problem, and it’s reinforced by all the touches you’d expect from a professional grade jacket, like waterproof zips and adjustable cuffs and hood. 

The windproofing means that it has kept me warm on a sunny but cold hike, but what makes this jacket so brilliant for outdoor adventures is how breathable it is. I recently wore it up one of my favorite hikes near Glasgow that entails an unrelenting climb for about the first two miles and I never even got so far as unzipping the pit vents. To me, this makes it ideal for high-aerobic pursuits where you really can’t afford to get wet or cold.

Comfort and storage

When I tested the Odin 1, I noted that I found the collar a bit annoying and uncomfortable when the hood is down, and I’m glad to say that this collar is better. Perhaps it’s due to the neater fit, but overall I can wear it with the hood up or down and the zip fully or partially zipped and not find the collar rubbing my face. The hood isn’t as enormous as that of the Odin 1 either, so while I’m not sure it would work with every helmet, it doesn’t obscure my vision.

There are only two pockets (though they have smaller pockets inside them) but they’re roomy and what I love most are the two-way zips on them. This means I can access my gear when I’m wearing my backpack, though you need to make sure you don’t accidentally unzip them when you think you’re closing them. I’d love a two-way zipper on the front too.

If you need a versatile three-layer shell that you can sweat in and wear for both hiking and ski touring, this jacket is for you, but it doesn’t come cheap and while you don’t need to be a mountain professional to wear it, it’s a big investment for the casual user. If you’re looking for reliable, budget-friendly protection for lower elevation day hikes but don’t need all-mountain protection, consider the Montane Spirit Jacket instead.

Helly Hansen Unisex Technical Hiking Socks: first impressions 

What makes a hiking sock technical? It needs to be breathable and wick sweat to keep your feet dry and comfortable, avoiding rubbing and blisters, have padding on the underside to offer protection and insulation when you need it, and contour to your foot. This sock from Helly Hansen checks all those boxes and we’ve been comfortably testing it out for a couple of months now.

We’d call this a medium weight hiking sock, which makes it pretty versatile across seasons. It’s not so thick you couldn’t wear it in the summer, which you’d want to if you were going on a long trek, but so far we’ve found it warm enough for freezing temperatures. The blend of merino wool and synthetic fabric means it keeps your feet dry on the trail and it also doesn’t get smelly even with multiple, sweaty uses which we love.

Besides the standard pilling we’d expect to see on the bottom after a month of use, it's a tough sock with a comfortable, performance-ready fit and it comes at a reasonable price too. The only thing we’d like to see added is some recycled materials.

Helly Hansen Unisex Technical Hiking Socks: in the field 

I received a couple of pairs of these socks ahead of a field trip with Arrochar Mountain Rescue recently and I’ve actually ended up wearing them for all of my hikes over the past couple of months. Here in Scotland, it’s been really cold and I’ve had them up a couple of Munros as well as some lower-lying hills and on a family walking holiday in the Galloway Forest.

Here’s how they performed:  

Sizing and fit

I have really small feet (3.5 UK / 5.5 US) and sometimes even the smallest socks are too big but luckily the smallest size of these just fits without leaving any bunching or wrinkling. The result is the contoured fit I want from a hiking sock, without my toes feeling pinched.

They come up to about mid calf on me, which means they afford loads of protection against even my tallest boots.

Comfort and temperature regulation

These socks feel great against my skin thanks to the merino/synthetic blend which is nice and soft. They’ve got a nice amount of padding on the heels, balls and toes without being too thick for comfort while hiking.

They’ve got vents at the top of the foot to let sweat escape, though I’ve been wearing them mostly in cold weather, but I haven’t suffered cold toes or hot, sweaty feet even with my waterproof winter hiking boots on. 

As a bit of an experiment, I also wore them for a boggy hike while wearing my Vivobarefoot Magna Lite SG hiking boots which offer zero wet weather protection and while my feet got wet, and a little chilly at the summit, I was pleased with how well they kept my feet warm when wet on the descent and how quickly they dried out on the drive home.

Durability and odor control

I’ve only been wearing them a couple of months (and I’ve been rotating through two pairs) and so far there’s just the usual pilling at the soles that I’d expect from any sock I’ve been hiking in. The synthetic material should add durability compared to a pure merino sock.

My main problem – and this is purely anatomical – is that my left big toe curls up a bit, which means that my toenail eventually breaks through even the sturdiest of socks. I can see a little more wear on the left sock suggesting this will happen eventually, but I’m hoping not for a couple of years.

The odor control is great on these, thanks to the merino content, and if I hadn’t worn them through a bog whilst wearing barefoot shoes I don’t think I’d even have had to wash them yet.

Recent years have seen the leather hiking boots of yore losing out to the comfort of lightweight trail running shoes on the trail, but many hikers are still seeking the stability and protection of a boot. This pair of hiking shoes seeks to bridge that divide, just like the most comfortable hiking boots and shoes.

With the shape of a boot and the materials of a shoe, the Traverse provide the best of both worlds in almost every way. They’re lightweight and require no breaking in before your first use, while the soles and uppers are robust enough to offer good stability and decent protection on rocky trails.

They’re fully waterproof for boggy hikes and stream crossings, and while we’ve mostly been testing them out in colder weather, we’ve yet to experience hot or sweaty feet in them so we’re hopeful the breathability holds up through the summer months. They also come in a boot version which comes higher up the ankle for more stability and protection.

Really our only slight gripe is that, on rocky descents that are really slick, we’ve had the odd slip and slide, but the soles provide enough traction for most day hikes. Though they could be overkill for really arid environments and well-maintained trails, they’re almost the perfect go-anywhere do-any-hike shoe.

My Helly Hansen Switchback Trail HT boots are looking well-worn after wearing them non-stop for a year, so I was pleased to get to test out another pair of Helly boots.

I first tested these hiking shoes on a recent excursion in the Scottish Highlands with members of Arrochar Mountain Rescue. Storm Babet was hitting Scotland that day, bringing lots of moisture, and while the conditions meant we didn’t venture up into high elevations, I still spent the day bushwhacking through rugged terrain as we performed safety drills and carrying a stretcher. Since then, I’ve had them up Ben Lomond, a Scottish Munro, on a freezing day as well as on several other nearby hiking trails.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing and fit

I’d say these run slightly on the small side. I’m a UK 3.5 and typically go up to a 4 in hiking boots to give my feet room to swell. I can get away with that in these shoes, but I think going up a full size would be perfect, especially if I want to wear these with thicker socks as winter goes on. That would give my toes plenty of room to spread and my feet to swell, but so far I haven’t had any issues with them.

The fit is really nice and supportive, with great heel lockdown and a secure fit around the midfoot, and the toe box isn’t too narrow (especially if you size up). They come up to just above my ankle bone.

Comfort and temperature regulation

What stands out above all else with these shoes is how comfortable they are straight away. I wore them to Arrochar without breaking them in and had no problems wearing them all day, even though we didn’t walk far. The next time I wore them was up Ben Lomond, which is about 11k roundtrip (6.8 miles) and my feet were perfectly happy. They’re secure without rubbing in the way a good pair of trail runners is, and the sole is really robust without being so stiff as to limit movement.

I’ve mostly worn these in really cold temperatures with medium weight socks, so I can’t speak to how they’d perform on a hot summer’s day, but my feet definitely haven’t gotten cold or sweaty in them. The uppers are more akin to a reinforced running shoe fabric than a really stiff boot upper, so I hope they’ll be reasonably breathable when it warms up, though of course they are waterproof which always limits the breathability factor somewhat.

Weatherproofing and protection

I haven’t got to test these out in a downpour, though I’ve had several very boggy walks and avoided wet feet and it was rather rainy when I wore them in Arrochar. However, I’ve performed my Litmus test of standing in a stream wearing them and they are watertight.

There is good reinforcement around the heel and decent reinforcement around the toes, so I’ve had no problems getting stuck into rocky trails in these without worrying about stubbed toes.

Grip and stability

The Max-Grip soles have about 4 mm lugs and they’re pretty good, although I did notice myself sliding a little a few times coming down some steep sections of Ben Lomond. It was a bright but exceptionally cold day so the rock was a bit slick with cold condensation, and while I think these types of conditions would be too much for many shoes, it’s still worth noting that if you’re looking for something for really slick conditions, you might want to try a different shoe.

As for walking, the build delivers just a nice, stable ride where I’m never worried about turning an ankle, and that even went for when I was bushwhacking through overgrown and steep terrain carrying a stretcher.

Durability and value

Even though I’ve compared these to trail running shoes several times, the uppers are well reinforced and these are quite a robust pair of walking shoes that I can imagine holding up to some good mileage.

They’re also pretty versatile across different seasons and have enough protection for longer treks but are light enough for a day hike, so I’d say you get quite a lot for your money here.

Helly Hansen Vandre Tur Pants: first impressions

Using soft, stretchy and lightweight fabric, Helly Hansen has done a good job of creating a casual pair of hiking pants here that are suitable for long days on the trail with lots of features. These aren’t your rugged pants designed for extreme conditions or overgrown trails, but sometimes all you need is a straightforward pair of walking pants and you get that in these. Made using a blend of recycled polyester and cotton, they breathe well when you’re warm and are treated with DWR to withstand a light rain. If you get drenched in them, they do dry quickly.

They have a decent amount of pocket space, with two hip pockets and two more cargo-style thigh pockets that seal with velcro flaps, though neither is quite big enough for a map. Other features include adjustable hems to keep the ticks out and make it easier to pull on rain pants, boot hooks to keep debris out of your hiking boots, and though the waistband isn’t adjustable, it comes with belt loops. 

In our field tests, we found these ran really large, so you might consider sizing down, and while they look a lot like the Fjӓllrӓven Keb Trousers, they’re substantially less robust and better suited for more casual adventures. That said, they come at a good price for a good, comfortable pair of hiking pants.

Sizing and fit

I usually wear a small and that’s what I tested and they were really big on me. So big, in fact, that I had to stop and buy a belt on my way to Arrochar, but fortunately they have belt loops. Even with a belt, they were a bit large and baggy, so I’d definitely recommend trying them on before you buy to see if you have to size down. That said, these are cargo-style pants so they’re meant to be a little loose-fitting (though too loose isn’t ideal for hiking) and there’s no concern about wearing them over thermal underwear.

Comfort and temperature regulation

My first thought when I pulled them on was how comfortable they are. The fabric is really quite soft against the skin (and there’s an extra soft lining to the waistband) and they’re light and loose so they’re really quite enjoyable to wear. It was mild the day I was wearing them and they don’t have leg vents, but they’re definitely breathable enough for humid and warmer conditions. They don’t provide a ton of protection against the wind, though, so I might not choose them for frigid days, but I could see myself wearing these year-round back in Colorado where it's arid.

Storage and other features

For me personally, these have plenty of pockets, and the velcro fastenings help keep the weight down, but for those of you who like to carry a map in your thigh pocket, you won’t find these big enough. 

I was kicking myself for forgetting my rain pants but the weather actually wasn’t as bad as forecast and the DWR treatment went a long way. They did eventually get soaked as the long grass we were in was really wet, but they dried quickly and the boot hooks are super handy in that type of terrain to keep rocks and critters out of my boots.

Durability and value

These are a good quality, well-constructed pair of pants and will do you for most day hikes, though they’re neither warm enough for icy days nor rugged enough for overgrown trails which I discovered when I was carrying a stretcher past a prickly bush. Ouch. That said, they’re a decent pair of general hiking pants at a decent price.

Helly Hansen Odin 1 World Infinity Shell Jacket: first impressions

More and more, what consumers want is trusty protection from the elements without leaving too much of a dent on the planet, and Helly Hansen has heeded that call with this waterproof jacket. Though super lightweight, this jacket is a true shell and will fend off the worst of the weather using a membrane with their LIFA technology that's blissfully free of PFCs. 

The recycled fabric is highly breathable and pit zips help you dump heat if you’re up to high aerobic hijinks in the hills and need to cool off. Though it’s light and packable enough to come along as your rain layer on any hike, a helmet compatible hood also makes it a worthy outer layer for winter sports. 

When the heavens open, the adjustable peaked hood provides brilliant coverage against a driving rain, though we do find the collar slightly annoying when it’s fully zipped with the hood down. Other than that detail, the jacket is comfortable, roomy enough for layering, and has some great bells and whistles added. There’s a hiking whistle attached to the zipper of the chest pocket if you need to call for help, and a RECCO reflector built into the hood if you’re exploring in avalanche prone terrain. 

Two zipped hand warming pockets are roomy enough, though tricky to reach when you have your backpack on, but you can also use the chest pocket. The price may seem eye-watering, but a lot of technology has gone into making such a high-performing jacket and of course, the idea is that you take good care of it and make it last a lifetime.

I’ve tested enough Helly Hansen gear to expect a lot out of every garment, which is perhaps both a blessing and a curse for them, but unsurprisingly this jacket hasn't let me down. 

I received it to wear during a gear-testing trip with Arrochar Mountain Rescue in the Arrochar Alps of Scotland. Fortunately for us, Storm Babet was hitting Scotland that day, so though we couldn’t venture as high into the mountains as we might have liked, we definitely got to put this jacket through its paces. 

Here’s how it performed:  

Sizing and fit  

I’m usually a small and that’s what I tested and even though it’s a little roomy, it’s ideal for layering over a fleece. Some people might prefer to size down for a more streamlined fit as I think Helly gear might run a little large, but your regular size is probably more functional. On my body, it comes down to about mid hip and doesn’t have much of a drop tail.

Waterproofing and breathability

This jacket defends against a sideways Scottish rain with fully waterproof fabric, zip garages, taped seams and a peak hood that offers extraordinary coverage when it’s zipped all the way up. The hood takes a little adjusting and seems huge, but I’m really glad for it when the rain hits.

I’ve also worn this as a shell on dry but cold and windy days up high and managed to get up a good sweat without even needing to unzip the pit zips so I definitely rate its breathability for skinning and winter hiking.

Weight and packability 

Shells can often be stiffer and heavier, but this one manages to pack all the punch of a shell while being really lightweight and pretty packable. I’d think nothing of rolling this up and stuffing it in my daypack for any hike.

Comfort and storage

The one area where I find this jacket a little uncomfortable is when I have the zip all the way up but the hood down. It just makes the collar that bit too high where it’s squashing my nose and a bit too stiff to be comfortable around my face and throat. It’s fine when the hood is up, but when it’s down I need to unzip it to my collarbones, which I don’t always want to do when it’s cold and windy.

There’s ample storage with three roomy zipped pockets, but I can’t access the hand warming pockets when I have the hip belt of my backpack fastened.

Extra features and value

Helly Hansen has become an industry leader in mountain safety, relying on mountain professionals to help them design their gear, and this jacket boasts an emergency whistle and RECCO reflector in addition to shelter in a storm. 

For me, those features in addition to the performance and sustainability focus really add a lot of value. I can understand that the price tag might give you sticker shock, but if you plan to wear this for decades and not just a season, you can definitely consider it an investment in a lifetime of adventure.

Helly Hansen Odin 1 World Infinity Shell Jacket: the bottom line

If you’re in the market for a high-performing technical shell for rugged adventures, there’s a lot to love about this jacket, and it should stand up to the test of time. We recommend trying it on first to see how the collar feels to you, but if it’s comfortable, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck and the eco-creds definitely help.

Named after the Norse god of war, and designed and developed in collaboration with mountain professionals, Helly Hansen’s Odin collection of outdoor gear is all kick-ass, take-no-prisoners top quality, but this jacket sits is right at the apex of the range.

A premium, three-layer shell jacket, the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 2.0 Outdoor Shell Jacket is intended for real use in potentially extreme conditions by serious outdoor adventurers and professionals, including guides and rescue workers (who must be very thankful that their employers are the ones splashing out for such a serious piece of clothing, while they get all the benefit). 

As you would expect, this jacket is highly protective and boasts a broad range of excellent features, including a highly adjustable, helmet-compatible hood and double zipping where it counts.

There’s no denying it is one of the very best waterproof jackets currently on the market, but to find out exactly how good it is, I’ve been trialing the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 2.0 Outdoor Shell Jacket for over eight months now, in a wide range of circumstances, temperatures and weather conditions. 

Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 2.0 Outdoor Shell Jacket: on the trails

I first put the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 2.0 Outdoor Shell Jacket to the test on a wild winter’s day in the Brecon Beacons in south Wales, where relentless misty rain was rolling around the exposed hilltops, and being given some extra bite by a gusting wind blowing in off the sea. 

As already mentioned, Helly Hansen develop the gear in the Odin range with expert input from outdoor professionals, many of whom end up wearing the resulting garments in the most challenging environments and conditions imaginable. 

For example, Helly supply gear to Mountain Rescue teams around the country, including the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team, a volunteer group of highly trained experts who come to the aid of injured, lost and stricken people out on the Beacons all year round. Along with my colleague Julia (who wrote this excellent account about the whole experience) and several others, I joined the team for a day to see how they operate and to test some of the clothes they wear.

To avoid creating extra casualties, the first rule of any rescue is to keep the rescuers themselves safe, and therefore the clothing and equipment the teams use has to be of the absolute highest quality.

Part of Helly’s Tech Professional range, the Odin 9 Worlds 2.0 Outdoor Shell Jacket boasts Helly Hansen’s top score for “extreme waterproofness” (it has a hydrostactic head of over 20000 mmH2O), and is also considered “Extremely Breathable”, with a breathability rating of over 20000g/m²/24.

With plenty of wind and moisture in the Welsh mountain air, I was grateful for these high levels of protection. But the day was unseasonably warm too, and as we started to stride up some steeper ascents, sometimes hauling stretchers during mock rescues, I began to feel the heat, despite the high breathability rating of the jacket. Beneath the shell I was wearing a Helly Hansen Daybreaker fleece and a LIFA Merino Midweight Crew Base Layer, which were both doing their job a little too well, and I was starting to steam.

Thankfully, the Odin 9 has large underarm vents with two zips on each side, which allowed me to quickly dump all that excess heat and then maintain a nice amount of airflow without letting in any rain in.

I was also able to fasten the cuffs around my wrists with velcro strips, to keep the elements out, and pull the bottom of the jacket in tight with a couple of cords, which meant the persistent wind couldn’t get in.

Both on the Brecons and on numerous occasions since, I have very much appreciated the helmet-compatible hood, which is highly adjustable (with toggles on the back of the head and on the neck) and has an excellent peak, which keeps rain off your face.

By zipping the high neck right up and tightening the hood, I have been able to reduce the front opening to a small slit while walking in heavy weather, just enough to maintain visibility while staying almost entirely shielded from near-sideways rain. The hood also has a recco reflector in the peak, which makes it easier for rescuers to find you if something goes wrong out there.

Other features include very generous-sized side pockets, which can easily accommodate a sheet map and plenty more besides, and also have double zips. The main zip is a robust YKK number, and the runner is topped by a nice chin protector. All the zips have glove-friendly pull tabs, so they can be opened and shut very easily even in the most challenging conditions – something I have been extremely thankful for on other adventures, during much colder days over winter.

As well as the main side pouches, the Odin 9 has a chest pocket on the left breast, but there is no inside pocket, which is a bit of a shame. Overall, though, this is an excellent shell jacket that will keep you dry and well protected in any conditions.

Helly Hansen Daybreaker Half-Zip Fleece: first impressions

The best fleece tops don’t need to sell themselves with a load of bells and whistles – they should simply perform the job they’re designed to do efficiently, and leave fancy stuff to the more technical layers, like waterproof outer shells. The Helly Hansen Daybreaker Half-Zip Fleece epitomizes this no-nonsense, zero frills, full-focus on functionality approach. And I love it for that.

A proper Polartec garment, the Daybreaker is available for a sensible price in an absolute rainbow of colors for both men and women. Made with 100% recycled poly material, as all good fleeces should be (fleeces were, after all, the original recycled outdoor garments), it acts as an excellent insulating layer under a waterproof and windproof shell jacket when conditions are inclement, and works well as a nice-looking outer layer when the weather is better. 

Quick drying and easy to look after, it’s a midweight fleece, and can be used all year round, from chilly summer evenings in camp to frosty winter mornings as part of a layering system. You might want to look at thicker option in seriously cold conditions, but across three and half seasons this top will do very nicely. 

We tested the half zip version, which is more than adequate for this style of top, but there is a full-zip option too. 

Helly Hansen Daybreaker Half-Zip Fleece: on the trails

I first tested the Helly Hansen Daybreaker Half-Zip Fleece top during a wild, wet and windy winter’s day in the Brecon Beacons in south Wales, while shadowing a crew of outdoor experts from the excellent Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team with my advnture.com colleague Julia, who wrote this ace account of the experience. 

Helly Hansen supply mountain rescue organizations around Britain with kit. The first rule of any rescue is to keep the people performing the rescue operations safe – so as to avoid creating extra casualties – and therefore the clothing and equipment the teams use has to be of the absolute highest quality. Safe in this knowledge, I had pretty high expectations of the clothing I was testing, and it met them.

The Daybreaker is far from Helly’s most sophisticated piece of apparel, but that’s exactly as it should be. It’s a no thrills, zero frills, highly functional mid layer, which performed perfectly beneath the Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 2.0 Outdoor Shell Jacket I was wearing to keep the raucous Welsh wind and Celtic cloud juice out.

Although it was damp, drizzly and breezy, the conditions were surprisingly warm for a winter’s day in the Brecons, but the midweight Daybreaker provided just the right amount of thermal protection. When we worked up a bit more of a sweat, climbing some stiff inclines while carrying stretchers during mock rescues, it allowed my body to breathe and wicked the moisture I was perspiring away from my body.

Since then, I have worn the Daybreaker as mid layer during hill walks on much colder winter days and used it extensively when camping through spring. It’s currently my go-to choice as a top layer during summer mornings and evenings spent outdoors, before the sun has warmed the woodland trails and after it has set and the evening chill has descended on the crag or camp.

The high neck provides an extra little bit of protection, which is very welcome when things get cold and breezy. The Daybreaker does lack thumb loops, though, which is our only real negative criticism – because they’re so handy at keeping sleeves in place when you’re sliding an outer shell over the top. There’s no hood either, but many people prefer mid layers without lids.

Helly Hansen Switchback Trail Low-Cut Helly Tech hiking boots: first impressions

Good looking and comfortable straight out of the box, Helly Hansen Switchback Trail Low-Cut Helly Tech hiking boots benefit from high-quality (and apparently responsibly sourced) soft suede used in the construction of the upper (see also: Leather vs synthetic hiking boots: which is better?)

For better breathability and improved weight saving, the main leather chassis is interspersed with dense mesh fabric sections, and the whole upper is wrapped in a Helly Tech waterproof membrane to keep rain and trail juice firmly on the outside. 

The EVA midsole offers ample cushioning and the rubber outsole has a HellyGrip pattern featuring various shaped chevrons, lugs and ridges to supply an effective mixture of traction and control in most conditions.

The tongue is integrated with the upper, to keep grit out, and there are four pairs of lace loops, plus an eyelet at the top, which facilitate a firm foot hold, complemented by a good secure heel cup, to keep your feet from moving around. There’s no surround rand, but the heel cup and toe bumper provide good protection in those crucial areas.

So my initial reaction to the Switchbacks was that they’re a well-designed, handsome hiking hoof, and the build quality seemed solid – but would they rank among the best walking shoes currently available? I took them out on the trails across winter, spring and summer to find out.

Helly Hansen Switchback Trail Low-Cut Helly Tech hiking boots: on the trails

I first field tested these Helly Hansen Switchback Trail Low-Cut Helly Tech hiking boots while hiking in the high hills and peaks of the Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales, on assignment with the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue team and my advnture colleague Julia, who wrote this brilliant piece about the experience.

It was November, and conditions were, of course, wet across the notoriously exposed Beacons. Less predictably, the temperature was unseasonably warm and we were also expected to do some work and assist the excellent WBMR volunteers with things like running around with stretchers over slippery rocks and uneven terrain while performing rescue drills. I am now of the opinion that all hiking shoes should be tested in these exact conditions, which certainly separated the wheat from the chaff.

And the HH Switchbacks were definitely wheat quality. Although the lugs are not especially aggressive, the outsole provided really good grip on the rocks and boulders, and filled me with confidence during technical descents, even when I was carrying quite a bit of weight (those stretchers are not light, especially when you have a casualty on them). I was particularly happy with the robust heel and toe protection, which saved my precious pinkies from bruising after several clumsy foot-stubbing incidents as I was playing at being a mountain rescuer.

The rain was only intermittent, but there was plenty of water on the ground from the day before, when it had been torrential, and the Switchbacks kept my socks dry all day. The shoes allowed my feet to breathe too, which was very much appreciated as we worked up a sweat transporting equipment up steep terrain.

I’ve also worn Switchbacks on multiple other occasions over the last six months in a whole mixture of conditions and across a range of terrain, and have found them to be a very versatile and capable hiking shoe.

In more muddy conditions the closely clustered lugs do accumulate dirt, as does the mesh on the upper, which is one downside. And you obviously need to be conscious of the fact that the low-cut design does not provide any ankle support, so the Switchbacks are best suited to day-long adventures rather than multi-day escapades with a heavy pack. But used correctly, they’re a really solid choice for hikers looking for a three-season walking shoe.

The Switchbacks are very robust, and while there are some midcut hiking boots that do offer ankle support while being marginally lighter than these shoes – such as the Salomon Cross Hike Mid GTX and the Keen NXIS EVO Mid boots – in my opinion you’ll get more miles from the Hellys, which are built to last longer, making them excellent value.

Helly Hansen Transistor Backpack: first impressions

Multi-functional kit is all well and good, but sometimes it’s nice to use a product that has been unambiguously designed to do one job well. The Helly Hansen Transistor Backpack is a daypack that’s been made the perfect size to fit everything you need for a day-long adventure.

That said, it’s a pack that can used in a wide range of outdoor scenarios, from hill hiking, peak bagging and trail running to cycling, rock scrambling and climbing. It’s really the versatility and handy size of the Transistor (not too big, not too small), plus its rich list of features, that make it a serious contender when it comes to the best daypacks currently on the market. 

The Transistor’s back panel, shoulder straps and hip belts are all made with perforated EVA foam, covered with 3D air mesh, to facilitate ventilation. There is no specific women’s version of the pack, but the harness is adjustable. Having said that, moving the sternum straps tends to be a fiendishly fiddly business, and you can lose the component parts.

Access to the main compartment is via a lovely, wide U-shaped top zip, which has a double zip and allows you to delve right in and find what you’re looking for. The Transistor has an internal zipped pocket, but annoyingly there are no pockets at all on the outside of the main bag (aside from one on the bottom, presumably designed to take a rain cover, which – also annoyingly – isn’t included).

There are two zipped pockets on the hip wings, though, which are big enough to take most phones, and are also useful for carrying a compass, credit card, treats and sweets, and various other things you want to be able to access without stopping to take the pack off.

The pack is fully compatible with a hydration reservoir, boasting a dedicated pouch and Velcro hook at the rear, for hanging the bladder, and a two-way portal for the hose, so you can position it over either shoulder. There are two generous mesh pockets for water bottles or flasks, one on each side, but these can also be used to stash trekking poles and various other things, with the compression straps positioned just above them useful for securing longer items.

The pack also has loops for carrying poles and/or ice axes. The bungy cords on the front are useful for stashing waterproofs, the clip on the chest strap has an integrated emergency whistle. There is even a version of this pack that features a Recco Reflector.

Helly Hansen Transistor Backpack: on the trails

I’ve been using the Helly Hansen Transistor Backpack during all kinds of outdoor adventures over the last six months, from booting around Bannau Brycheiniog National Park to doing a whole range of hiking and biking trips in the Surrey Hills, on Exmoor and along sections of the South West Coast Path. I also wore it during an off-road running marathon across the Quantock Hills, and it’s the versatility of this pack that really endears it to me. 

The harness is comfortable, and the hip belts are very substantial and comfortable considering the relatively small size of the bag. I found making adjustments to the chest strap awkward and time consuming, but once you have it set up, you don’t need to keep fiddling around with it. And once sorted, the fit is really secure – it doesn’t bounce too much when you’re doing something vigorous, such as trail running or mountain biking.

The back panel isn’t as breathable as, say the Jack Wolfskin Crosstrail 32 LT, because although it’s perforated, the foam still sits directly on your back, which inevitably leads to sweating. However, the design of the Transistor is less rigid than packs that sit proud of your back, and it has better storage capacity for its size as a result. Although the bag looks small and feels light when empty, it is easily big enough to swallow a rain jacket, waterproof pants, a fleece, a lightweight puffer, gloves, a hat, a packed lunch, map and whatever else you might need for a fairly full-on day on the trails.

I have found the many of the Transistor’s features to be useful in all sorts of scenarios, but the lack of an easily accessible zipped pocket – either on the lid or the front of the pack – is really annoying, especially when you’re wearing the pack in a more urban setting and you need to stash small things somewhere handy.

Overall, though, the Helly Hansen Transistor Backpack offers a lot of form and functionality for an ostensibly small pack, and it’s a little Tardis when it comes to squeezing lots of gear in for a big day out.

Helly Hansen Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers: first impressions

Comfortable straight out of the box, Helly Hansen Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers are handsome-looking deck sneakers that feel very light on the foot.

With a lightweight, quick-draining design, these shoes are ideal for wearing on yachts and other boats, as well as being versatile enough to be at home on the beach and at the bar. Besides looking great, they perform well when it matters – on rolling seas – and we rate them as some of the best water shoes around.

The mesh-dominated upper is highly breathable and lets water in and out like a sieve, but it dries very quickly, so the shoes are best worn sans socks (an antimicrobial treatment helps prevent the buildup of odor).

The EVA foam midsole supplies support to the underside of the foot in all the places where it matters, and the outsoles are impressively grippy on all sorts of surfaces. The lace eyelets extend right to the top of the tongue, so you can be sure to get a really secure and tight fit.

The Ahiga are marketed for men, and for some reason the closest women’s equivalent, the Skagen F-1 Offshore, which are very similar in terms of construction and design, are significantly more expensive. The Ahiga and Skagen are both PVC free, and they are made with a significant amount of recycled material.

Helly Hansen Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers: in the water

I first wet-tested the Helly Hansen Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers during a mid-winter, rain-lashed sailing trip, amidst a proper feisty storm. It was an extraordinary experience, on board a Figaro racing yacht with professional sailors, but the conditions could hardly have been much more challenging. From the moment we stepped aboard the yacht, high winds were picking up salty spray and hurling it on our faces, a rollicking rolling sea threw us around, and torrential rain pelted us from start to finish.

There seemed to be almost as much water in the air as there was in the sea at times, and the deck was drenched all day long. Moving around felt precarious, but the grippy Ahiga V4 HP sneakers enabled me to keep my footing throughout the adventure, including when we had to leap over the waves between the yacht and the RIB that took us out to meet the sailing boat on the seam of the Bristol Channel and the Celtic Sea.

I wore Merino socks during that adventure, which helped supply some extra warmth (because, on their own the sneakers aren’t especially thermally protective) but on subsequent escapades I’ve jettisoned the socks and gone barefoot in these shoes. With quick-draining mesh uppers and comfortable insoles, these shoes are best worn sans socks.

They wouldn’t be my first choice of shoes to wear kayaking or SUPing, but on boats (the environment they’re designed for), beaches and in bars, they’re brilliant. Since the dramatic day on the racing yacht, I’ve worn the Ahiga V4 HP Sneakers on mostly beach-based walks, rockpool scrambling shenanigans and small-boat adventures.

Helly Hansen Varde Fleece Jacket 2.0 review: first impressions 

The classic look of this streamlined fleece jacket isn’t at all showy, and as a result its high performance may not be obvious at first glance. Wear it as a mid layer on a cold ski day or an outer layer for a shoulder-season hike, however, and we’re certain you’ll be impressed with its ability to provide ample warmth while remaining breathable. The full-zip design means it’s easy to pull on and off in changing conditions, while the knitted construction gives it a higher quality look, almost like wool, and ensures that it won’t pill with wear. 

Long sleeves and thumb loops keep your hands cozy, or you can jam your hands into the two zipped hip pockets and stick your valuables in either one of the inner mesh pockets. This fleece doesn’t feature an adjustable hem, but the high neck keeps a cold draft out at the top end. Priced in the middle of the range of fleeces we’ve tested, we think this versatile jacket is a great investment for outdoor adventures looking for a reliable, classic piece of kit. 

Helly Hansen Varde Fleece Jacket 2.0 : in the field 

I first wore this fleece on a whirlwind ski trip to Verbier this winter, where it served me well as a mid layer under my women's ski jacket on some seriously Baltic days. Since then, it’s been packed away with my ski gear, but now that the weather is warming up here in Scotland, I recently pulled it out to see how it works as an outer layer for hiking and though it’s definitely not the most stylish fleece in the world, I was impressed with its capabilities.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit 

This fleece runs a little large, I think, but I’m sure that’s because it’s designed to work as a jacket over other layers. I tested a small, which is my usual size, and it’s not exactly baggy but it is roomy and the sleeves completely cover my hands, which I don't necessarily mind. It’s slightly fitted and flares out a bit at the bottom since there is no adjustable hem.  

Comfort

This is a very comfortable fleece with a super soft lining. The looser fit means it doesn’t restrict my movements anywhere and I wore it for five hours the other day without anything annoying or chafing me. It’s cozy! 

Warmth and breathability 

As a mid layer, this fleece got me through a -19 ski day, so I have no questions about its ability to keep me warm when layered. Worn as a jacket over a base layer on a on a sunny but windy hike with an alleged high of 51F (11C), I stayed comfortable. It’s also really breathable, which I didn’t notice until I started hiking in some pretty strong winds. For the first five minutes or so before I warmed up, I was definitely noticing the breeze blowing in, but once I got warm that wasn’t an issue and I never had to take it off over eight miles of walking. 

Weight and packability

This fleece is listed as extremely lightweight, and it’s definitely light enough, but compared to other fleeces we’ve tested, it seems pretty standard. For such a cozy fleece, it’s not the bulkiest, and rolls up to a bit smaller than a rugby ball. It would therefore take up a bit of room in a daypack, but you could easily tie it round your waist. 

Odor control and durability 

Here's the thing: all fleeces get stinky when you sweat in them and I challenge you to find me one that doesn’t. That said, because this one is more of a jacket than a sweater, the underarms don’t get close to your sweaty areas and I’m pleased to report that this one doesn’t smell at all after a few uses.

Helly Hansen Alphelia Lifaloft: first impressions 

First let’s address the glaringly obvious: the Helly Hansen Alphelia Lifaloft jacket (available direct from Helly Hansen) comes with a pretty hefty price tag. For this outlay, you could buy two decent ski jackets, or five beginner-friendly basic winter jackets. So should you splurge it all on just one? I put the Alphelia through its paces to answer that very question and find out whether it really is one of the best women’s ski jackets out there.

If you spend all day, every day out in the elements working as guide, a seasonnaire or a snow sports athlete, or if you’re just a seasoned skier who wants to invest in a great bit of kit, you’ll need something more heavyweight than your average ski jacket before you head to the mountains. 

Enter Helly Hansen’s Alphelia, which is ready for whatever winter weather you chuck at it. This design is impressively waterproof and warm but still highly breathable, and lightweight enough that you can wear it all day. On test we found the Alphelia pleasingly comfortable thanks to a great cut and articulated sleeves; we reckon you’ll barely notice you’re wearing it. All the usual features we look for are present and correct in this smart piece of kit (see How to choose a ski jacket) – there’s even a clever pocket that keeps your phone warm to preserve its battery.

Helly Hansen Alphelia Lifaloft: on the hills

The Alphelia does really deliver a great level of performance – it is reliably wind and waterproof, and on test on the Austrian pistes I found that snow didn’t stand a chance against its DWR-treated shell. 

It’s also insulated enough to keep you cozy in sub-zero temperatures, but is still impressively breathable when you start working up a sweat by hitting up jumps or tackling challenging off-piste (see also: Shell vs insulated ski jacket: which should you choose?).

And this jacket sports all the extras a good ski jacket should, including a detachable, helmet-compatible hood, a rucksack-compatible fit and well-placed pockets. It also has a built-in RECCO reflector (a small, electronic transponder that helps make you more findable in case of avalanche or accident). And did we mention that phone-battery-preserving pocket?

One final point, though: it sizes a little small, so I would recommend trying a size larger than your usual fit, to make sure you can wear a mid layer under the Alphelia on really cold days.

Helly Hansen Logo Cuff Beanie review: first impressions 

This chunky knit hiking hat comes in a classic style and is designed to deliver serious warmth on chilly adventures, whether you’re on a hike or tooling around the neighborhood. It offers plenty of room to cover your ears and even a high bun hairdo, is snug enough to stay on in the wind and comes in three different colors.

Coming in only one size, this hat might feel too snug for larger heads, and it’s too warm for high intensity adventures like trail running and cross country skiing. It’s not a super technical, lightweight or thin hat, but it’s good quality, will keep your noggin warm and looks pretty good.

Helly Hansen Logo Cuff Beanie review: in the field

I’ve been testing out this beanie for a couple of months in Switzerland and the hills of Scotland to see how it fares against a cold winter, and I’ve had plenty of challenging, frigid days to put it through its paces.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit 

This beanie comes in only one size, and it’s snug on my normal-sized head. I sense it could be too tight for those of you with a larger head, and comfort-wise, I’d like it to be slightly less tight. However, my favorite beanie has an annoying tendency to blow off on windy days, which we have a lot of in Scotland, so I really appreciate the stay-put fit of this hat and I tend to choose it when there’s a gale blowing. It’s quite long, so it easily covers my forehead and ears with loads of room for a high ponytail. 

Comfort and temperature regulation 

These are really pretty comfortable. The material is nice and silky with enough stretch to move with my swing, they have flat lock seams so no chafing on a 10 km run, and the stay-put grips means they don’t slide down and annoy me.

I was a bit afraid I’d be too chilly in these, but the material is quite sturdy so it does a good job of sheltering my arms from Scotland’s howling gales. I’ve seen ones which look more breathable and I think might be more practical in warmer weather, since nylon isn’t the most breathable fabric, but I found these to be perfect for running in 8°C (46°F) temps. They keep the chill and even a light rain off and dry quickly when wet. Of course, on a colder, bright day, they provide UV protection too.

Comfort and style

The knit of this hat is perfectly comfortable and non-itchy on my skin, so that’s a huge plus, but it being a bit tighter means I tend to want to push it up off my forehead. It’s quite a good looking urban-friendly hat, especially in the honeycomb color, but I must admit I prefer a slouchy style and this one sticks up quite a bit.  

Warmth and breathability

This isn’t a breathable hat meant for running, it’s designed to retain heat and it does that really well. That means it’s helped me stave off a headache when I’m hiking in really cold weather and walking around Verbier on -10C nights, but it’s too warm for running and cross country skiing.

Weight and packability

I wouldn’t call this hat heavy, but it’s a chunky affair and too bulky to easily shove in a pocket or wear under a helmet.

Helly Hansen Daybreaker 1/2 Zip Fleece Pullover: first impressions

This no-frills pullover gets straight to the point and delivers exactly what you want from a fleece jacket: namely, warmth and breathability. For such a lightweight garment, it delivers ample warmth on cold hikes when you wear it as a mid layer with a soft shell or waterproof jacket on top, but its weight and low bulk means you can also wear it as your outer layer in the summer months for those early starts and high altitude adventures.

Made using 100% recycled polyester, this Polartec fleece is kinder on the planet, and it’s fairly budget-friendly, too. A ½ zip comes all the way up to under your chin if you need it, and means you can vent a little steam if you get sweaty on a hike, however like most synthetic garments this one does get a little smelly with active use, even when worn over a base layer. We’ve tested it on the ski slopes and hiking trails and found it’s a great shield against the cold, but it’s soft and cozy enough you’ll want to pull it on for lounging around at home, too.

Helly Hansen Daybreaker 1/2 Zip Fleece Pullover: in the field

In three months, I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of this fleece, from the hiking trails of Scotland to the ski slopes of Switzerland. Now that’s partly because my old fleece is a hideous color and a bit boxy, but mostly because this is a great performer and delivers pretty much everything I’d want and hope for in a fleece.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit 

I’ve been wearing a small, which is my go-to size, and it fits to size. It’s not loose, but there’s plenty of room to wear it over a base layer, which is good because it’s not stretchy. If I were to be really picky, I’d like about a centimeter of extra room around my neck when it’s zipped all the way up. It’s not tight, but when I look down I do notice it a little more than I’d like.

Comfort

With the exception of the neck being a hair’s width tighter than I’d prefer, this is an extremely soft and cozy fleece. So much so that I often wear it for lounging around the house to cut down on energy bills.

Warmth and breathability 

For cold adventures, this fleece packs plenty of insulating power, but I’ve worn it for some cold and steep hikes recently with a base layer underneath and soft shell jacket on top and I can say that it’s also really breathable, so I’ll be wearing it as my outer layer come the warmer weather, though I’ll need to figure out a plan for the lack of pockets.

Weight and packability

At under seven ounces, this weighs no more than the box of macaroni and cheese that I brought backpacking last week, which is no sweat off my back at all. I haven’t needed to pack it yet, because I’ve been wearing it, but the small size rolls up to smaller than a Nalgene bottle.

Odor control and durability 

Like all synthetic clothing, this one definitely grabs onto a bit of odor, even though I’ve been wearing it over a base layer. I wouldn’t say it’s the stinkiest garment I’ve tried, but it does need a wash every few hikes. After a few months of heavy use and washing, it looks pretty good with no real signs of wear and tear.

Helly Hansen Women’s Odin Muninn 2.0 Shell Pants: first impressions 

These women's hiking pants are made for hikers who don't want to stop hiking just because summer has come and gone. These midweight shell pants offer enough protection that you won’t need to wear rain paints outside of torrential conditions, and enough warmth that you won’t have to pair them with thermal underwear when it’s not frigid out either. They’re windproof and water-repellent for blustery days, but breathable for those steep slopes and have four way stretch so you can easily move in them. Fit with a RECCO reflector for safety, these pants were designed with feedback from mountain rescue teams.

The adjustable waist means you can tailor these to your body without wearing a belt, and snap adjustments and zips on the trouser hem mean you can fasten them over larger winter hiking boots. We found them to run a little on the large and long side, but with all the adjustable options that wasn’t a problem for performance. If they get muddy, you can hose them down in the shower meaning you don’t have to wash them every hike, and three large zipped pockets have plenty of room phones and maps. These are a bit warm for summer hiking, but you can certainly wear them for three-seasons and stay pretty comfortable in rainy, snowy and cold weather. 

Helly Hansen Women’s Odin Muninn 2.0 Shell Pants: in the field 

I’ve been wearing these hiking pants exclusively on my hikes for the past three months, including mild days in Wales with the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue team and some very cold, wet and snowy days in the Scottish hills and I’ve found them to be extremely reliable for cold weather hiking.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing and fit 

When I first put these on, I wasn’t super thrilled with them. I usually wear a small and I found the small to be a little large and a little long, plus they’re not the most flattering on me. However, the adjustable waist means I can tailor them to my size, and since I’ve been out in some snowier conditions, I’ve been glad for the longer leg and adjustable hems which mean they don't drag in the dirt. The website shows them as fairly snug-fitting, but they’re quite baggy on me, which I personally prefer for movement and also so I can layer them over thermal underwear if need be, but you might be able to size down if you like them tighter.

Weather protection

These aren’t completely waterproof, but they’re treated with a DWR spray which has kept me pretty well protected against some sideways rain of late and they don’t take on water and get heavy like some of my hiking pants. It also meant that when I came home covered in mud after a few falls recently, I could just rinse them off under the shower and wear them again the next day, which I consider a huge bonus. They’re not big, thick insulated winter pants but will keep a cold winter’s wind off no problem which means I haven’t got cold in them.

Breathability and comfort 

Because I live in Scotland, not all winter days are cold, or even cool, and lately I’ve been out on some milder expeditions where I’ve been able to get pretty warm. These are definitely breathable for a sweatier adventure, but I’d find them too warm for summer.

Thanks to the four way stretch and soft lining inside the waistband, I find these really comfortable. Some shell pants are designed to be worn over long underwear and can have odd scratchy details, but these have no such thing.

Storage and durability

These trousers have two zipped hip pockets and one very deep zipped thigh pocket that is plenty big enough for an iPhone, map or guidebook.  They’re also really sturdy, being a midweight shell. I’ve taken a few tumbles on some steep muddy slopes lately and they’ve held up.

Helly Hansen Swift HT Ski Gloves: first impressions 

When you’re facing up against challenging conditions on the slopes, it can be easy to pick out the burliest pair of ski gloves on the market, only to find you can’t use your hands to unzip pockets, unbuckle your ski boots or get those ski pole wrist straps on and off on the chairlift. Helly Hansen’s Swift HT Ski Gloves manage to accomplish all the weather protection you need against dangerous wind chill and wet, heavy snow while still giving you decent dexterity for maneuvering around your gear. 

These ski gloves deliver good warmth in very nippy conditions, and are waterproof and windproof. The fleece lining isn’t the softest I’ve ever felt, but it’s super comfortable even when worn all day and is breathable if you’re working up a sweat in the backcountry. Synthetic leather palms add reinforcement and a little grip for pulling the bar down on the chair, and Velcro straps seal them snugly around your wrist so they fit under your ski jacket sleeves and keep a cold draft out.

The touch screen compatibility doesn’t work well, but so long as you want to be off your phone and in the snow, these well-priced gloves provide all the important weather protection you need to stay warm, dry and safe on the hill. 

Helly Hansen Swift HT Ski Gloves: in the field 

These ski gloves saw me through four days of skiing Verbier this winter, where temperatures ranged between -19°C and -4°C and we had whiteout conditions for two of the days, so I certainly feel like I put them through the ringer and can recommend them for a good pair quality ski gloves. Not once did I wish I'd brought a different pair.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing and fit 

I’d say these run ever so slightly large, only because I have fairly long fingers and usually wear a small, but I tested these in a small and they have a little more room at the end of the fingers than I’d expect. You do want about a quarter inch there, but mine leave about half an inch. It’s not enough that everybody needs to size down, and I wouldn’t, given the chance, but if you tend to run between sizes, you might consider it.

When you’ve got the right size, these fit reasonably snugly while leaving room for a liner glove or the sleeve of your base layer to fit inside the cuff, but aren’t big and bulky the way some ski gloves are. 

Comfort and breathability 

I wore these all day, every day, and they never rubbed or became uncomfortable. The fleece lining is soft, though if I’m being really critical I’ve definitely felt softer, but most importantly there are no irritating seams or scratchy details.

Though it was seriously cold, I was doing a lot of work on technique in deep powder, and I ended up hiking through deep snow while doing some avalanche training, so I did actually manage to break a sweat in them and was pleased to see my hands didn’t get clammy or cold. More importantly, when I did get a little sweaty, they weren’t too difficult to get on and off which can be an issue. 

Warmth and weather protection 

Now for the most important stuff. As I’ve mentioned, it was really cold out, and I think these gloves did a really good job of providing insulation in challenging conditions, plus they’re fully waterproof against wet snow. I won’t lie and say I never had chilly fingers or balled my hands up when I was riding the chairlift, but I’m also certain that that is because Verbier is so beautiful that I kept taking my gloves off to take photographs. If I hadn’t done that, I feel certain that my hands would have stayed pretty toasty even on the coldest day.

My overall impression was that I didn’t really notice the cold very much, or these gloves on my hands, which I think means they’re really great gloves. I wouldn’t ski in temperatures any colder than these, and they definitely provide the insulation and soundproofing of a much burlier, bulkier glove, which makes them more functional. 

Dexterity and other features 

Because these gloves aren’t super bulky, the finger dexterity is pretty good, though the space at the end of the fingers reduces that a little. I might wear a different pair if I was touring and really fiddling with gear, but I was able to clip the waist belt of my backpack and get my ski poles wrist straps on and off no problem, which is really important. They do claim to have touch screen compatibility, but I haven’t been able to get it to work. That means that I did have to take them off to take photos since it was a media trip, which meant I got nippy fingers, but I also think it’s fine to just leave your phone in your pocket unless it’s an emergency. I’ve also never had a pair of ski gloves with touch screen compatibility that really works well, and I’ve tested quite a few pairs.

As for other features, these are pretty streamlined gloves but there is a very small pull tag to get them on, and a clip to keep them together when you’re not using them. If I could add anything, it would be a wrist leash to minimize my risk of dropping them from the ski lift, but other than that I think they’re a good price for a really good pair of ski gloves and I’ll be wearing them on more snowy adventures.

Helly Hansen ULLR RS30 Backpack: first impressions

The ULLR RS 30 is a sturdy and spacious ski backpack that can accompany you on adventures on the pistes, side country and into the backcountry. With a spacious main compartment that you can easily access from the top and rear, you can load up your extra down jacket or even carry your ski boots as hand luggage for a ski trip. Easy-to-use attachments mean you can carry your skis or snowboard and your helmet while you’re hiking in, and an aluminum bar in the padded back panel plus hip and sternum straps mean this is surprisingly comfortable to wear while you’re skiing downhill in deep powder too. 

If you are venturing into the backcountry, you’ll be equipped with pockets for your avalanche gear plus an emergency whistle on the sternum strap. There’s also a smaller internal zipped pocket for stashing keys and phones, a soft lined pocket where you can pack your goggles without them getting scratched, and two roomy side pockets where you can pack your skins and a water bottle. Speaking of hydration, a narrow pouch in the back could be used to squeeze in a hydration pack, but this pack isn’t really ideal for use with a hydration pack. 

There aren’t any pockets on the hip belt for gear you might like to have close to hand, so make sure your ski pants have all the pockets you need for that. Though it only comes in one size, we tested it out on lots of different sized bodies and found it to be fairly universally compatible and adaptable. Compared to similar sized ski backpacks it’s only ever so slightly heavier and much easier on your budget, plus you’ll never run out of room for your gear. 

Helly Hansen ULLR RS30 Backpack: in the field 

When I received this backpack, I thought it was far too heavy and boxy to be practical for skiing in, but it turns out I was completely wrong about that. I used it as my carry-on to fly to Geneva recently, where I subsequently skied on and off piste at Verbier while carrying my gear and I found that I didn’t even notice it on my back.

Here’s how performed:

Fit and comfort

Because this weighs 3lbs empty and has more a rectangular shape, I assumed it would be a bit awkward to wear, at least for skiing, but I was really surprised to find that I didn’t notice it on my back at all, even though I ended up skiing around with it loaded up for six hours one day. 

In the past, I’ve always used a hiking daypack for ski touring, and while those are super lightweight, the way they contour to the body doesn’t actually make them very suitable for wearing over bulky ski clothes. This pack fit easily over my ski layers, and the back panel is nicely padded with an aluminum bar in the panel which means you can adapt it to the shape of your body. Of course the hip and sternum straps mean you can adjust it and transfer the weight of your shoulders while you’re pole planting.

I’m 5’ 4” but I was skiing with a group consisting of all different sizes and shapes of bodies and we were all able to wear this pack even though it comes in one size. For skiing, I’d say it’s really comfortable.

Storage and safety

This backpack comes with heaps of storage. A roomy main compartment can be accessed from the top and rear and fit my winter boots which I needed for the end of the day, and several of my colleagues used it to carry their ski boots on the plane. There’s a super handy integrated foldaway compartment to carry my helmet and several different options for carrying skis and snowboards. I used it to carry the rest of my gear, and I love the large side pockets for my water bottle and skins as well as the goggle pocket which is lined with soft fabric which won’t scratch your lenses. My only real complaints are that there are loads of zippers and I often found myself back in the main compartment when I wasn’t expecting to be, or not there when I was, and that I’d like a pocket on the hip belt for my phone.

This isn’t an airbag compatible backpack, which is no problem for me as I stay out of steep backcountry terrain, but for safety gear there’s a whistle and dedicated pouches for avalanche gear which are labeled so you know exactly where to put them. The gray backpack also has bright yellow details for visibility, while no one will miss you if you opt for the bright orange pack.

Weight and packability  

At 3 lbs empty, this bag is on the heavier end of packs of a similar size, but as I’ve said, it’s so well designed that I actually forgot I was skiing with it, so I’d prefer it over a lighter hiking backpack that bunches up over my ski clothes.

Compression straps mean you can cut down on bulk if it’s packed full of empty clothing, and I got away with using this as my carry-on, which meant I didn’t have to cram it into my suitcase, but jobsworth flight attendants might give you a hard time about this.

Helly Hansen LIFA Merino Midweight Crew Base Layer: first impressions 

In this high performing base layer, Helly Hansen have built upon the already admirable properties of merino wool, which if you don’t know is quick drying, breathable and wicks away sweat when you’re adventuring in cold weather. By essentially creating a two-layer base layer, the merino wool acts like a shell while the layer that touches your skin is non-itchy polypropylene which means even those of you with the most sensitive skin can benefit from the warmth and protection of this base layer. 

This base layer doesn’t have any added elastic fabric, but it’s naturally stretchy enough for all activities and is carefully designed to sit close to the skin the way base layers should, and is easy to layer your fleece jacket on top of. Stripey sleeves give the garment a slightly retro vibe, but the beauty is really in its performance. You can wear this on frigid ski days in the backcountry or sailing in high seas, get soaked and still stay warm and be dry soon after. Priced in the middle of the range, we think it’s excellent value for money. 

Helly Hansen LIFA Merino Midweight Crew Base Layer: in the field 

In three months, I’ve tested this base layer under the following conditions: cold-weather hiking in Scotland, -19°C skiing in Switzerland, sailing the high seas in south Wales and trail running during an extreme cold snap on the West Highland Way. So, I might not be an expert in hiking, skiing, sailing or running, but I think I’m an expert in how well this base layer performs in extreme conditions and I think it’s fantastic.

Here’s how performed:

Fit and comfort

This base layer runs a little on the large side and because they haven’t added a stretchy fabric like elastane, it’s not as figure hugging as some of my other base layers. That said, it sits comfortably next to my skin and the lack of stretch means it’s more durable than some of my other tops. I prefer the fit of it in my normal size, but if you’re on the small end of your size, you might consider sizing down.

What makes it really comfortable is the two-layer construction, so the part that’s next to my skin isn’t itchy wool, and the flatlock seams mean no annoying rubbing anywhere. It's perfectly comfortable under a running jacket.

Though it isn’t super stretchy, I haven’t deducted any points there because it truly doesn’t restrict my movements at all. I’ve even done yoga wearing it, so unless you’re planning on doing something that requires more range of motion than Wheel Pose, you honestly won’t miss the stretch.

Temperature regulation and breathability 

What I want from a base layer is something that keeps me warm and dry. I thought all of that had gone out the window when I went out on a small skiff in high seas off the coast of Swansea last year on a Helly Hansen sailing trip and within seconds, a giant wave had dumped itself down the collar of my sailing jacket (I didn’t realize there was a hood). So, I was soaked from the inside out and, though it wasn’t freezing for November, it was cold enough. But I stayed out on the seas for a couple of hours and was really impressed by how warm (or not cold) I remained. It also served me well under other layers on a recent very cold ski trip, and I’ve worn it with my running jacket during a cold snap for trail running.

On the other end of the spectrum, I don’t overheat in it the way I sometimes have wearing merino wool base layers. It’s super breathable and I think I’d be comfortable wearing it in any mild to freezing adventures.

Weight and packability

This isn’t the lightest base layer I own, but it’s meant to be midweight and it's certainly not heavy or bulky. If you’re really worried about weight and pack size, one that is a single layer construction will definitely be a better choice, though it might also be itchy. For something that performs in harsh conditions, you'll want this base layer.

Odor control and durability

Merino wool is known for its great odor control, but the polypropylene lining of this means that it does get a little smellier. It’s nothing compared to an all-synthetic base layer, but expect to have to wash it after a couple of sweaty runs. That said, it’s a great quality garment with lots of staying power.

Helly Hansen Women's Powderqueen Bib Ski Pants: first impressions

The Powderqueen Bib Ski Pants keep you warm on frigid lift rides and let the sweat escape when you’re thrashing powder in the backcountry. The waterproof, windproof shell fends off a harsh wind brilliantly, while light insulation keeps you cozy without being too heavy or bulky. The bib design features adjustable waist and suspenders so these are easy to pull on and make sure that even the deepest powder stays out of your undies when you’re tumbling through the snow. Breathable fabric and venting zips on the outer thighs mean you can stay cool during sweaty adventures. 

Because these bibs are designed with the backcountry in mind, they’re equipped with a built-in RECCO reflector. Zipped cuffs mean they’re easy to pull on over your ski boots, and the hems are reinforced to withstand the sharp edges of your skis and boot buckles, meaning you can wear these season after season.

Five sealed pockets including a handy chest pouch mean you can keep all your vital gear close to hand and these overalls leave plenty of room for layering base layers and mid layers underneath. Make sure to size up if you have muscular legs so you have plenty of freedom to move and layer these over thermal underwear when it’s cold out.

These salopettes are priced for expert and pro skiers, but they deliver for those skiers with super performance in all conditions.

Helly Hansen Women's Powderqueen Bib Ski Pants: in the field

I’ve only had these ski bibs a short time, but I’ve already put them through their paces on a Nordic ski jaunt across country in the Scottish Highlands and over four days of piste and off-piste powder skiing in Verbier and I can tell you that I’m now a convert to salopette-style ski pants. These overalls have kept me toasty in sub zero conditions, dry in deep powder and kept me from overheating when I’m gliding across country.

Here’s how they performed:

Fit and comfort

I’ve been testing a women’s small which is my normal size and these bibs are perfect for me. That said, I was skiing with a group of other journalists and a couple of them commented that they felt the thighs were a little tight. I’m not known for my muscular legs, so this hasn’t been an issue, but if you are, you might want to size up so you can move properly and layer properly.

As for comfort, these feel great on, thanks to the elasticated, adjustable suspender straps which mean I can adapt them to my frame without them pulling uncomfortably in the crotch.

Weather protection and breathability 

I’ve skied a lot over the past 20 years, in various temperatures and conditions, and I’ve never been more comfortable than when I was out wearing these in -19°C conditions in Verbier. I was wearing them over thermal underwear, but they’re full windproof, even against a pretty brutal assault on the chairlift and at the top of the mountain, and even skiing through fairly heavy, wet snow in Scotland they kept me bone dry. The beautiful thing about overalls is that they keep the snow out, which is good because I took a couple of tumbles in the snow.

On the other end of the spectrum, Helly Hansen has done a top job with breathability. They have two thigh venting zips on the outer thighs but I have to admit that, even when I was skiing uphill, the fabric is breathable enough that I didn’t need to use them.

Weight and packability

When compared to other ski pants we’ve tested, these are midweight. The added insulation means they’re not ultralight, but they’re not in the same ballpark as some of the heaviest ones we’ve tried out. I traveled with a checked bag so I wasn’t too worried about their packability, but if you’re rolling them up and stuffing them in a backpack, they squash down to about the size of a Yeti Rambler 26oz flask. Not tiny, not super bulky either.

Storage

I certainly didn’t run out of pockets in these with two zipped hip pockets, a zipped thigh pocket plus another with a velcro flap, and a chest pocket with velcro flap. To be honest, I’ve been wearing these with my Helly Hansen Infinity Elevation 2.0 shell jacket which is also rife with pockets, so I haven’t used them as much, but I love being able to tuck things into the chest pocket and it’s good to know that, come spring, I can lose the shell and still have plenty of storage.

Durability and value

These are hard wearing trousers and the hems, where I always see the most damage, are reinforced, so even after quite a few days they still look as good as new. They’re not the most expensive ski pants we’ve tested, but they’re up there in terms of budget, but you definitely get what you pay for. If you plan to spend a lot of time in the snow, you can rely on wearing these for many seasons to come.

Helly Hansen Elevation Infinity 2.0 Ski Shell Jacket: first impressions 

To design this groundbreaking technical ski jacket, Helly Hansen consulted the people who know best – ski professionals. Because the company outfits tens of thousands of ski patrollers and instructors around the world, it was able to gather a lot of data about what skiers need from their jackets and the results are impressive.

This three-layer, breathable waterproof shell jacket repels the elements like a hardshell, but moves with you when you’re carving down the mountain. Instead of using harmful PFCs to maintain water-repellency, it's heated and stretched the fabric to obtain the same results for a better result for the planet, and created a jacket that never needs to be reproofed. 

Worn over a base layer, this jacket is light enough for spring conditions, but it has all the details you need for frigid temps and those whiteout days when you practically need a snorkel to battle the powder. A detachable powder skirt keeps the snow out of your ski pants when you go down, and wrist gaiters mean you don’t have to fiddle with your gloves to keep a frigid blast out of your sleeves.

The hood fits easily over your helmet if it’s puking snow and you want to keep your goggles clear and there are pockets galore for your extra gear, snacks and ski pass: four deep, zipped outer pockets on chest and hips, one of which keeps your phone from dying, an inner zipped pocket and mesh pocket, and a handy pocket on the left sleeve that’s just big enough for your ski pass, and ensures you can zoom onto the lift or gondola and catch that next run. 

It’s equipped with a RECCO reflector in case you get in trouble, and the bright orange hood makes you visible to others on the gnarliest of days. If you’re even remotely serious about skiing, this jacket delivers impressive performance and it’s the only one you’ll ever need. 

Helly Hansen Elevation Infinity 2.0 Ski Shell Jacket: in the field 

As nature would have it, I got to test out this jacket while skiing the most intense conditions in which I’m likely to ever test a ski jacket in. During four days in Verbier on a press trip with Helly Hansen, we got 25 inches of new snow (the first 2.5 days were mostly whiteout conditions followed by sunshine) and the temperatures ranged between -22°C and -4°C on a balmy day. I’ve been skiing for 20 years and I can honestly say this high performing jacket outshone every piece of ski gear I’ve tried yet.

Here’s how it performed:

Fit and comfort

This jacket fits true to size, and do remember that all ski jackets should look a little big when trying them on over street clothes. The articulated fit means that it isn’t baggy, but I was still able to layer it over a base layer and two mid layers easily. It comes down to just below the seat, so my bum never got cold on the chairlift, and the sleeves come down to my first knuckle.

Lots of factors play into how comfortable it is: it’s breathable and it’s super lightweight for what is essentially a hardshell in terms of performance and it allows for great freedom of movement. The wrist gaiters have thumb loops that I can wear under my ski gloves so no annoying gaps for cold air to get in.

The only thing that was slightly uncomfortable was I found that when I wore too many layers under it (a fleece plus a hooded mid layer) I had difficulty zipping the front zip all the way up, but I was arguably wearing too many clothes and others in my group didn’t seem to have this problem.

Weather protection and breathability 

Between the water repellent fabric, taped seams, large hood and powder skirt, no snow or moisture got in when I was wearing this thing, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t take a few tumbles. Plus, because the water repellency is created by the structure of the fabric, and not a chemical treatment, it lasts for life! Along with my other layers, I never got cold in this jacket and I’ve never been more comfortable skiing or on the lift.

I know lots of waterproof garments say they’re breathable, but this really is. Even though it was freezing out, I had to do plenty of skating along powdery cat tracks and also some hiking in thigh deep powder during avalanche training. All this is to say, I got hot and sweaty but never felt damp or chilled. Layer it correctly and neither will you.

Weight and packability

This jacket is surprisingly lightweight, about the same as a dinner plate, when you consider all of the features it boasts. I traveled with a checked bag, so packability wasn’t an issue, but it rolls up to about the size of my Hydroflask no problem. 

Storage and other features

For spending the day on the hill, I needed to carry my neck gaiter, ski gloves, beanie, goggle bag, ski pass, phone, tissues and hotel room key. I managed that and still had room to spare. Two deep zipped hip pockets, a chest pocket and two inner pockets carry everything you need, while the left chest pocket is designed to keep your phone from dying in the cold. I had my phone out to take pictures non stop and it never got low or died. The right hip pocket has a super handy goggle wipe attached to a stretchy cord which I used loads to keep my goggles from getting handy, but the most convenient pocket of all was on the left sleeve. This one is just big enough for your ski pass, and it’s perfectly positioned to scan and get you past the lifties or through the turnstile at the bottom of the gondola.

I’m not a fan of super obnoxious, brightly colored ski gear myself, and this one came in a nice dark blue but it has a practically neon orange hood (no matter what color you choose). This meant that, while skiing in whiteout conditions with a group of people I’d only just met, we could always see and find each other. It’s a seriously underrated feature and makes you really visible on the hill. 

I skied with my hood up over my helmet quite a bit to keep the snow out of my goggles and I found that it stayed up in the wind and didn't restrict my visibility. And I love the powder skirt and wrist gaiters which keep the cold and snow out.

Durability and value

This is a really hard wearing jacket and is built for super rugged terrain and harsh weather conditions. Hopefully I won’t be skiing close enough to any trees to catch a branch, but if I do I expect this jacket to hold up the way a softshell can’t, while not being as difficult to move in as a typical hardshell.

As for value, well the price is a little eye watering and truly, if you’re planning skiing groomers on bluebird days, you can pay less elsewhere and be happy. But if you’re at all serious about skiing and venturing out in all weather, I can honestly say I’ve never been more comfortable skiing and I think this jacket delivers on its price tag.

Helly Hansen Lifa Pro Belay Insulated Jacket: first impressions

Calling this a mountain jacket, Helly Hansen worked with mountain rescue teams to design a seriously warm, protective outer layer for anyone who needs to stay safe and dry while spending long hours on cold mountain sides. The result is superior warmth provided by a combination of LIFALOFT sheet insulation and PrimaLoft GOLD fiber balls optimized by body mapping, meaning more insulation in the areas where you need it the most. This jacket looks and feels a bit like your favorite comforter and might even lead you to think you’re invincible in cold weather. Adding to the impressive insulation, it comes with wet weather protection that’s made using hydrophobic fabric and a PFC-free DWR treatment for next-level eco-friendly waterproofing.

You can expect some bulk from this jacket, and it’s certainly not as light as your typical down jacket for winter hiking. That said, it’s surprisingly breathable if you do work up a sweat in it, and packs down to about the size of a small backpacking sleeping bag. If you’re braving stormy weather in it, the high profile hood stays up in a gale and keeps the rain out, while an adjustable draw cord on the hem seals out any unwanted drafts. If you’re using the two hip pockets to keep your hands warm, you still have two deep inner pockets (one zipped) to stash your essential gear so you don’t have to rummage around in your backpack for your compass.

For a short hike in cold weather, a lighter down jacket will suffice and at the price, you’ll probably only consider this for serious expeditions, but if you do take it out on one you won’t be disappointed by its performance.

Helly Hansen Lifa Pro Belay Insulated Jacket: in the field

Let’s get one thing straight: this isn’t your typical insulated jacket for your average hike. The Helly Hansen Lifa Pro Belay Insulated Jacket is a burly (albeit lighter than you’d think to look at it) mountaineering jacket that was developed for extreme conditions. I first tested it out during a training day with Western Beacons Mountain Rescue team in Wales and though it wasn’t an especially cold day, the training involved a lot of standing around and by the end of it, I was happy to have so much protection. 

When I returned home to Scotland, we soon underwent a cold snap with temperatures dropping down to -15°C for over a week straight and let me tell you, I was the envy of everyone in my household and this jacket saw a lot of use. Though it’s definitely not something I’d casually throw on for a typical cold weather hike, I trust it totally for extreme conditions and so far I’ve found a lot to love about.

Here’s how it performed:

Comfort and fit 

This jacket runs a little large – I typically wear a women’s small and found this small to definitely be on the bigger end, but that also leaves loads of room for layering a fleece and base layer beneath it, which is kind of the point, especially given that Helly Hansen invented the layering system. I personally like the bagginess and the fact that I can just tuck my hands inside the sleeves, but for a more streamlined fit, you may want to size down.

As for comfort, wearing this thing literally feels like being wrapped up in my favorite duvet. It’s so cozy and snug and I happily wear it around town when it’s freezing out and imagine myself to be the envy of all the land.

Weather protection and breathability 

Looping back to my comment about this jacket being like a duvet, I was understandably dubious that it could also be waterproof. The first day I tested it was dry, but when I went home I dumped several glasses of water on it in a very non-scientific test and the water beaded up just like they say it will and it was dry minutes later. Reassured, I’ve worn it out on a few cold, wet adventures lately and been happy.

It is extremely warm and windproof, which is essential for mountain rescue teams who sometimes spend days on missions, and the general bulkiness and warmth also made me doubt its breathability, but it really does let me sweat on an uphill without having to unzip.

Weight and packability

Because this jacket looks quite bulky, it’s actually lighter than I expected, but that’s not to say it’s comparable to your average down jacket in terms of weight. It will add a couple of pounds to your backpack, which would make me think twice if the conditions weren’t really calling for that level of protection.

The same goes for packability. At a glance, you wouldn’t think this packs down small and I’m not going to lie and say that it stuffs down to the size of a gerbil. It doesn’t, but when I packed it in a stuff sack it was about comparable to my ultralight camping quilt, which is impressive. 

Value and durability

This is a pricey jacket meant for serious expeditions, so if you’re a casual adventurer, it’s probably not worth the price. But the price itself speaks to the garment’s high quality (and durability) and performance power, so if you really need this level of protection, it’s a small (okay, medium) price to pay for being warm and dry up high.

Helly Hansen Switchback Trail HT boots: first impressions

Helly Hansen calls this a day hiker boot, and while they’re not ultra rugged, you could certainly wear them for many days in a row on the trail without complaint. The Switchback Trail HT boots are impressively lightweight hiking boots that are built for everyday performance, certainly one of the most comfortable hiking boots around. Opting for highly breathable and quick-drying waterproof uppers, these boots repel water and perform well so long as you’re not heading out on an ultra technical hike or in the wildest of winter expeditions.

Supremely comfortable out of the box, these boots require no breaking in and the cushioned midsoles mean you can walk for miles in them on day one without sore feet or rubbing. A supportive ankle cuff keeps you stable on rough terrain. Underfoot, grippy soles give good traction on slick, rocky trails and the heel and toe cap offer more protection than the comfortable, lightweight nature these boots might suggest. These boots are ideal for anyone looking for more protection than a trail shoe but seeking to avoid the weight and breaking-in period of a more traditional hiking boot.

Helly Hansen Switchback Trail HT boots: in the field 

My years-long quest to find a pair of hiking boots that don’t require me to arm my feet with 700 blister pads may finally have come to an end with the Helly Hansen Switchback HT boots. If you’re used to a seriously sturdy, rugged trekking boot, these will feel far too flimsy for you, but if, like me, you’ve long been looking for boots that perform more like a trail shoe in terms of comfort, weight and breathability, you’re going to want to give them a go.

Here’s how they performed:

Comfort and fit 

These boots fit true-to-size with some good room in the toe box. The first thing I noticed when I pulled these on was how insanely comfortable they are. I mean, I’ve put on hiking boots in the shop that were comfortable many times, only to discover after half a mile of hiking that I no longer have any skin on my heel, but these felt different. They’re well-cushioned underfoot which makes for easy walking, and the ankle provides really nice, non-intrusive support. 

The first time I wore them was for an expedition out in the Beacons with the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team and since I was sure there would be more standing around and learning than actual miles, I wore them without blister pads (though I carried them in my backpack). After wearing them for about five hours, my feet felt fine! Next up, I got really brave and wore them for an eight mile walk from Greenock to Wemyss Bay, and once again, there wasn’t any rubbing, anywhere. It’s an actual miracle for someone with my history of hiking boots.

Weather protection and breathability 

I’ve had these out on a few longer treks lately in some reliably wet weather and on very boggy trails and I’ve yet to feel a drop of water on my hiking socks. Of course, they’re still pretty new so I imagine I’ll need to reproof them at some point, but given that I’m testing them out in aquatic Scotland, I have to say I’m pretty happy with their water-repellency.

Despite their water protection, these boots are extra breathable, so they’re great for warm hikes and quick drying on soggy days. I wouldn’t wear these out in a freezing blizzard, but for most conditions I’m likely to hike in, they’d suffice.

Weight and durability

Have I mentioned how light these boots are? A pair of these weigh in at about half the weight of my next lightest boots, and as someone that typically prefers to hike in trail shoes, that’s a huge bonus for me. Particularly for my longer hikes, that’s really added to the comfort and lack of fatigue.

That said, just because they’re lightweight doesn’t mean these are flimsy. I haven’t had them long enough to say they’re indestructible, but they’re certainly good quality.

Value

Perhaps the most surprising part of these boots is the sticker price. For a good quality pair of performers, I’d expect to pay upwards of £150 but these come in at a reasonable £110, which for good quality construction and boots you can wear in most conditions, I think is a bit of a bargain!

Helly Hansen Lifa Active Solen T-shirt: first impressions 

A nicely designed, highly practical top, the Helly Hansen Lifa Active Solen T-shirt has flat seams and is comfortable from the first wear, with no next-to-skin coarseness.

The Lifa Active poly material is 60% recycled, and despite its relatively baggy, relaxed-fit – and a complete lack of mesh – this T-shirt remains lightweight and quick drying. All the kinds of thing you want from the best running tops.

The fabric has been infused with used coffee beans using a low-temperature, high-pressure and energy saving process called S.Café, which heightens the garment’s ability to protect the wearer from the harmful effects of the sun, giving the T-shirt a UPF sun protection rating of 50+ (and here are some more tips for running in hot weather). The coffee – which the brand claim will not wash out – also helps prevent the buildup of bad odors caused by bacteria and allegedly also offers up to 200% faster drying time compared to cotton.

While good for a range of outdoor pursuits, the lack of any reflective detail on the T-shirt is a shame for road runners who want to run safely at night.

Helly Hansen Lifa Active Solen T-shirt: on the trail 

I have been trail testing the Solen T in the relatively warm conditions of Southern England in late spring and early summer, and I’ve found it to be a pretty versatile top, providing some protection from early morning chill when required, but also breathing well (see what is a breathable fabric? for more on why they’re a good idea for outdoor pursuits). Lacking any mesh elements, it can run a little hot when the temperature really rises.

The Lifa Active poly material wicks sweat away beautifully, though, and the garment dries pretty quickly if it gets wet with sweat or rain. It’s comfortable and provides excellent protection from sunburn, and the fabric is thick enough to offer some protection against stinging nettles and brambles. 

Thus far the coffee-infused material has honored its promise to prevent the buildup of stink, but we will keep monitoring that.
