Arc'teryx Beta AR Stormhood Jacket (2023): first impressions 

Since we tested this jacket, Arc'teryx has released an updated version that features PFAS-free Gore-Tex and a new pattern to cut down on waste. For this article, we've tested the previous iteration, first released in 2023.

The story of the Arc'teryx Beta AR actually goes all the way back to the year 2000, with the release of the brand's first "all-rounder" jacket. Various updates over the years have made the jacket lighter, stronger, and more watertight, and with the 2023 edition came the addition of the awesome Stormhood.

Using the ultra-durable Gore-Tex Pro waterproof membrane, this is a hardshell waterproof jacket that's virtually bombproof against wind and precipitation, but relatively light compared to its competition. Arc'teryx Watertight Zippers throughout ensure there are no weak points where water can leak in.

The main talking point is that Stormhood, which is big enough to wear over your ski helmet, but has two cinches at the back to draw it tight when you're just wearing a beanie, and they're big enough to operate with gloves on. A high collar protects your face when it's fully zipped up, though without a helmet, there is a slight gap at either side where some rain or snow gets in if the wind is howling.

The fabric is pliable enough to allow for lots of movement, and while, like any hardshell, it's not the most breathable for summer conditions, it is equipped with pit zips and makes an excellent choice for most mountain pursuits the rest of the year.

The regular cut allows plenty of room for multiple layers, and the design is lower at the back for extra protectio,n which comes in handy if you want to wear it for skiing. The hem is adjustable, as are the cuffs, when you need to call in reinforcements against the weather.

With two hand-warming pockets and an inner chest pocket that's just big enough for the largest Android phones, you'll have plenty of available storage in theory, though the outer pockets become a bit redundant once you're wearing a backpack. This is something a two-way zipper would help with.

As usual, when it comes to Arc'teryx, this jacket is extremely pricey, which does make it out of reach for many. But for the price, you do get the highest quality build, and thanks to the Arc'teryx ReBIRD program, a jacket that should last for decades.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Stormhood Jacket (2023): in the field 

I've been hiking in the Arc'teryx Beta LT jacket for a couple of years, which offers really great, lightweight weather protection, but for the trek to Everest Base Camp, I was aware I'd need more protection, so I took the Beta AR Stormhood.

I made sure to test it out on some rainy hikes in Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales before I left for Nepal, and even though we were quite lucky with the weather on the way to Base Camp, I did end up wearing it against a couple of afternoon thunderstorms and at the highest altitudes over my fleece for wind protection.

I also recently brought it along on a five-day thru-hike in the Lake District, where I ended up wearing it for the last three days against some torrential rain and heavy showers.

Here's how it performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a Small, which is my usual size. While previous Arc'teryx Beta jackets have proven to be a little roomy on me in that size, I think this is just about perfect. It's not quite as neat as it might be, but I can easily wear it over a base layer and a down jacket, which is most important when it comes to choosing a shell for wintery conditions.

The drop tail covers my bum completely for added protection, the sleeves come to my knuckles, and the collar up to my nose when I'm zipped up. It's not quite as long as the Beta LT, but I think it's more functional at this length and wouldn't change a thing.

Weight and packability

This isn't the lightest waterproof jacket I've tested, but considering it's a three-layer hardshell, it's surprisingly light and packable, which came in handy on the trek to Base Camp, since it mostly stayed packed away inside my backpack and didn't take up too much room.

I've tested lighter waterproofs, such as the Rab Firewall Alpine, but that's meant for milder conditions and moving fast. In build and performance, this is pretty similar to my Mountain Equipment Makalu Jacket, but it is quite a bit lighter, which makes it more appealing for longer expeditions.

Weather protection and breathability

This jacket is nearly bulletproof against the wind, rain, and hail, with one exception, which I'll get to in a moment. I've had it on in a couple of brief but heavy downpours in the Himalayas, but the biggest test was during a five-day, 75-mile trek where I saw a lot of very wet weather and worse it for about eight hours a day.

Despite some intense rain, the fabric hasn't wetted out yet and the hood is pretty fantastic in a storm. I've tested it with my climbing and skiing helmets, and it fits easily over both. Sometimes I find helmet-compatible hoods to be a little too large without a helmet, but this one can be adjusted to be quite snug and cocoon-like, with toggles I was able to adjust while wearing thick gloves in Nepal, and a nice laminated peak to keep the rain out of my eyes.

The only issue, which is one I've found common with helmet-compatible hoods, is that there is a slight gap on either side of my jaw, which I've discovered does let precipitation in if the conditions are especially nasty, and after hiking in heavy rain I did notice that my chest area was soaked through.

Overall, it excels at wind protection, and for the highest days in the Himalayas, where we were dealing with some gusts but also climbing quite vigorously, I found it to be a better choice than pulling on a down jacket. I ended up wearing it for several days of trekking over my fleece in the early mornings and staying quite comfortable.

That said, for milder Scottish summer conditions, it's about as breathable as I expect a hardshell to be, and that's to say it's not very breathable if you're climbing. The pit zips do help, and I've tested worse, but I'd probably choose the LT over this one during the summer months at lower altitudes.

Storage and other details

The hand-warming pockets are nice and deep, so they're functional from that perspective, but as is so often the case, they're not really usable once I've got my backpack on. Fortunately, the inner pocket was plenty big enough for my iPhone, and is just big enough for my new Android, which means I can keep my phone protected but close for pictures.

The other main detail to mention is the addition of a RECCO reflector built into the hood, which has been a feature of the Beta AR since 2020. This won't activate if you get lost or injured in the backcountry, but it could make you more searchable if disaster strikes, and I like to think that every little bit helps out there in the wild.

Rab Firewall Alpine Waterproof Jacket: first impressions 

If you're in the market for a high-performing waterproof jacket for hiking and climbing, it makes sense to buy from a British brand since no one knows more about rain than the Brits. Rab has put all its expertise into this fine piece of gear.

The Rab Firewall Alpine is built for fast and light adventures where you're likely to come up against the worst of the weather. Made using a three-layer Pertex Shield construction, it performs as well as any hardshell, holding off a heavy downpour or a strong wind, while the peaked hood protects your face. There's no added stretch, but the fabric has some natural give, which allows for freedom of movement if you're wearing it for an expedition that involves climbing or scrambling.

The hood is easy to secure thanks to a toggle adjustment at the back, and stays up in a gale thanks, in part, to the protective high collar.

Despite its impressive wet-weather protection, it's highly breathable if you're wearing it on the move, and for milder conditions, easy-to-open underarm venting zips help you quickly dump heat.

It's one of the lightest jackets we've ever tested, so you won't notice it when you have to wear it all day, and it rolls up small enough to fit into your backpack or running vest when you're carrying it.

Because the goal is lightweight protection, the brand has foregone a bunch of pockets, opting instead for just one well-placed chest pocket that's deep enough for any smartphone. It's easy to reach when you're wearing a pack, and the two-way front zipper gives easy access to pockets and gear underneath the jacket.

It's a robust piece of kit that's likely to replace your favorite waterproof, and though it's pricey by most people's standards, it's actually on the more budget-friendly end of waterproof jackets we've tested.

Rab Firewall Alpine Waterproof Jacket: in the field 

After swearing by my Montane Phase Lite jacket for the past four years, I received this jacket to test just as summer weather rolled in. I wore it for a hiking and yoga retreat in the Swiss Alps, where it was surprisingly useful, and carried it (or wore it) on every summer hike in Scotland and in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where I've been able to test it out against heavy downpours and light sprinkles.

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a UK 8, which, according to the label, is an XS in the US. I'm somewhere between a small and an XS, depending on the brand, but I'm glad I went with the smaller size as it fits me really well. It's neat enough not to be annoying, but there's still room for my fleece underneath.

I wouldn't say it's overly long, but it just covers my bum for a little extra protection, and the sleeves are long enough to hide my hands if I don't want to wear my gloves. They're not overly long, and they have hook-and-loop fastenings for adjustability.

When it's zipped up, the collar is high, so my face gets loads of protection against the wind. And the hood doesn't blow down, which is essential in Scotland.

Waterproofing and breathability

Because it's not a hardshell, I wasn't necessarily expecting it to be such a powerhouse against a deluge, but that's exactly what I've experienced.

On my first evening wearing it, I was walking through Verbier, and one of those evening alpine thunderstorms rolled in. I got absolutely hammered on my sprint home, but when I got indoors, I was shocked to see that I was bone dry on the inside. Like any waterproof, it would eventually wet out if I were in conditions like that for hours, but the Pertex membrane and watertight construction have yet to let me down on the trail.

I've been testing this in mild conditions because it's been summer, so I've had ample opportunity to expose any flaws in breathability, and I can't find any. I've worn it for a few hikes from start to finish and with the pits unzipped, I've been very comfortable.

Weight and packability

Montane has already released a light version of this jacket – the Firewall Light – and while it is heavier to make it more robust against summit conditions, we're only talking grams. This jacket doesn't feel flimsy, but it's very lightweight – a hair lighter than my Phase Lite and heavier only than my Kathmandu Trailhead Stretch, but the latter doesn't offer the same level of weather protection.

I can squish the Alpine Firewall down to about the size of my water bottle and squeeze it into my pack, whether I'm hiking with a light 20L day pack or a 33L with more gear.

Storage and fastenings

One of the reasons this jacket is so light is that it only has one pocket, which some might view as a downside, but it doesn't bother me.

We've been trained to expect hand warming pockets on jackets, but the moment you fasten the hip belt on your backpack, they're totally pointless. So Rab has done away with them here and just included a zipped chest pocket where you can keep your phone for easy access – that's all I want.

The front zipper is two-way, so if you do use your hand warming pockets on your mid layer, you'll be able to access without having to completely unzip in a rainstorm. Plus, there's an extra popper at the bottom for more protection.

You can tighten the cuffs with hook-and-loop fastenings, while toggles on the back of the hood and hem mean you can cinch everything in tight, though the neat fit has meant I haven't had to.

First impressions

A good fleece jacket can come in handy all year round, providing some much-needed extra warmth when the winds pick up in the warmer months and adding an insulating layer during winter.

Columbia's Sequoia Grove fleece aims to be the perfect all-rounder, going with 'anything and everything' according to the Columbia website. It's made from snug 100% recycled polyester fabric and designed to provide light insulation, meaning it's best suited to cool days in the spring and fall, and shouldn't be worn on its own in winter.

It features stretch binding on the collar, cuffs, and hem to 'seal out' cold winds and stop heat from escaping. Its high collar design provides some much-appreciated additional insulation around your neck.

When it gets a little hotter, you can fully unzip your Sequoia Grove fleece and feel the breeze on your upper body.

Columbia Sequoia Grove: on the trails

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Sequoia Grove fleece jacket in April and have been eagerly putting it through its paces ever since.

I've worn this stylish Columbia number in all manner of weather conditions during treks over the hills and valleys of southern England and up the odd mountain in Northern England's Lake District National Park.

Here's how it performed:

Fit and comfort

Comfort is the make-or-break element of any fleece jacket. An uncomfy or ill-fitting model is never fun to wear, especially if you're trying to navigate tricky trails and unforgiving weather conditions in the wild.

Thankfully, the Sequoia Grove is exceptionally comfortable. The 100% recycled polyester fabric felt soft on my skin from its first use and remained so after several months of testing on the trails. It's hardened a touch after a few washes, but still feels pleasant and cozy.

It also fits very well. I'm often irritated by tight-fitting hiking layers that provide a good level of warmth but feel almost stuck to your skin as you trek. Hence, I was pleased to find that the Sequoia Grove fits a touch looser than many similar models and still provides some great warmth.

For reference, I'm 6ft 1in tall, and the size large fits true to size.

Protection from the elements

Columbia classifies the Sequoia Grove fleece as suitable for light warmth, meaning it's best suited to cool days in the wilderness and can't be relied on to keep you toasty, on its own, during winter.

I put mine to the test in the variable weather of the English spring and summertime, and encountered plenty of cool and blustery days on the trails, where the Sequoia Grove excelled.

The soft fleece material acts as a useful additional layer when it's too cold to wear just a t-shirt, and its hemmed sleeves stop heat from easily escaping. It's great for windy days, and came into its own when I trekked along the exposed ridgelines of Helvellyn, a 3,116 ft (950m) peak, which would've otherwise been freezing.

In the cold temperatures of early spring, it proved its mettle as an effective layer underneath a larger insulating jacket, and I often found myself wearing it on its own, as I'd built up enough of a sweat that I didn't need a proper jacket.

The Sequoia Grove fleece jacket isn't waterproof, and quickly gets soaked in a downpour. That said, I was surprised by the fight it put up in light rain and drizzle, which took a while to get through the polyester fabric.

It's worth checking the forecast if you're planning to head out without a raincoat, but the odd shower won't cause too many problems.

After several months of testing, my Sequoia Grove has yet to sustain any real damage. The polyester fabric remains pretty soft both inside and out, and there aren't any stains that have stuck around.

Weight

At 1lb 3oz (54g), the Sequoia Grove is a relatively lightweight hiking option. There are lighter fleeces out there, but they seldom offer the same levels of comfort as this model, which never felt like it was weighing me down as I made my way through the trails.

If you're eager to shave every gram, then you should check out something super-light like the Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hybrid jacket, which weighs in at just 9.2oz (260g).

Jackets like this one are best suited to trail running and sacrifice some of the comfort present in models like the Sequoia Grove.

Price

The Sequoia Grove is a great fleece jacket, and its price tag of $65 (£65) is a fair representation of its quality.

It's even more of a bargain considering the high prices of other, similar hiking fleeces, like the Houdini Power jacket, which will set you back an eye-watering $240 (US only), or Helly Hansen's Varde 2.0 fleece jacket, which costs $140 (£100).

In their defence, these fleeces offer a little more insulation than the Sequoia Grove, but pale in comparison to its bargain price tag.

London-born Edward Whymper was a leading figure of the Golden Age of Alpinism. Indeed, it was his fateful first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 that brought about the end of this period, a time when the great peaks of the Alps were first climbed, often by wealthy Brits expertly guided by locals. The Matterhorn would be the most enduring event in Whymper’s legacy, yet he was a truly pioneering early proponent of alpinism, one of Britain’s greatest ever mountaineers, with many impressive feats to his name.

French brand Cimalp clearly holds Whymper with enough regard to have named one of its best-selling technical fleece jackets after him. It’s designed as a mid-layer that’s “perfect for shifting mountain conditions, climbing or trekking activities” and is available in both men’s and women’s versions. Cimalp namechecked mountaineering, climbing and ski touring as it’s ideal uses, though I had a suspicion it’d be a good option for pretty much all outdoor pursuits.

I’ve tested half a dozen pieces of Cimalp kit over the last few years and was stoked to try out this high-performance mid-layer during my mountain jaunts. Allez!

First impressions

The Whymper is very similar in terms of design, features and function to Berghaus’ MTN Guide MW Hoody, a mid-layer that's part of the British brand's premium Extrem range for mountain professionals. The Whymper is obviously tailored towards active use in the mountains, with a pair of front chest pockets that are higher than you’d get on a standard hooded jacket. This is to enable the wearer to still have access to the pockets while wearing a harness.

The most obvious feature, as with the Berghaus hoody, is the design of the main fabric. Turn the hoody inside out and its grid-like structure becomes immediately apparent, comprising thousands of rectangular cuts of fleece, much like Polartec's Power Grid design. In this case, it's Cimalp’s Cimagrid, a design intended to provide both warmth and breathability for strenuous outdoor pursuits. The fleece cubes insulate while the gaps between them breathe – simple but effective.

The fit is athletic but not restrictive, ideal for a layer that’ll spend much of its time beneath a waterproof jacket. Partly thanks to this fit, it looks good too. I was testing the Noir-Gris colorway, which has subtle red detailing along the zippers and grey breast sections. I certainly felt great wearing it and I also reckon it represents decent value when compared to the direct competition.

The Whymper is also available in a range of other colors: Blue, Purple, Black, Blue / Green and Green / Yellow for men; and Black, Green, Blue and Purple / Pink for women.

Cimagrid breathable insulation

The feature that elevates the Whymper above your standard mid-layer is its grid-like fleece structure – named Cimagrid. The idea is that the gaps between the tiny, rectangular polyester fleece sections allow the jacket to breathe, thus allowing radiated body heat to escape, wicking moisture away and keeping you cool during dynamic activities. At the same time, the blocks of fleece insulate, keeping you warm at the same time. It’s not quite as dramatic design as the sieve-like face fabric of the Houdini Pace Flow Houdi, but it’s a similar idea.

It's this feature that makes the Whymper so well suited to pursuits where temperature regulation is key. As a mid-layer, it allows warm, moist air to move through the system, continuing the good work of your moisture-wicking base layer.

Another key quality of this fabric is its 6% elastane content, which enables 4-way stretch, meaning the garment is flexible both horizontally and vertically. This is crucial when it comes to the freedom of movement needed for activities like alpinism or skiing, especially given the hoody’s tight fit. Meanwhile, the grid structure also means less weight and greater packability, both big pluses for long adventures in the mountains.

Unfortunately, unlike with the Berghaus equivalent, there’s no mention of recycled materials here, or the jacket’s recyclability at the end of its life. However, Cimalp mostly sources its dyes and pigments from biological sources, its clothing is completely PFC free and its fabrics are always either Bluesign or Oeko-Tex certified – so the brand are making some strides towards a sustainable future.

Other features

As mentioned, the Whymper boasts two large, zippered chest pockets, placed high enough for access when wearing a climbing harness. Both these and the central full-length zipper boast chunky branded pulls for ease of manipulation when wearing hiking gloves. The zippers on the pockets slide up and down with consummate ease, while the central zipper feels slightly more rugged – reassuringly so. Beneath the central zipper is a fabric overlay that stops heat from escaping through this potential area of weakness. Little features like this are very welcome and nod towards the jacket's thoughtful design.

When fully zipped up, the Whymper provides coverage around the neck, a nice touch that provides additional warmth during colder adventures.

The hem and cuffs aren’t adjustable, using elastic rather than drawstrings or Velcro. This isn’t an issue, as they wrap nice and tight, and are easy to loosen with a pull. By keeping things simple, Cimalp have kept weight to a minimum. Likewise, there’s no adjustability in the hood, which sits snug around the head when the front zipper is fully done up. Despite this, its elastane content means that it will take a helmet without any problems.

On the trails

I’ve been wearing the Whymper in the mountains for several months, both as a mid-layer during winter adventures – paired with the excellent Cimalp Cosmiques H Breathable Trekking Jacket – and as an outer on spring and summer exploits in Wales' Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and for everyday wear around England's southwest.

On a wintry week in Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park, the Whymper was put through its paces during long mountaineering days spent climbing some of Scotland's highest mountains. The Highlands are renowned for their long walk ins, and I found the Whymper was a great choice for these. It provided the additional warmth I needed while effectively regulating my temperature during these strenuous treks. Whenever I needed to dump heat during an ascent, I’d simply open the front zip and let things cool off.

Once up high, the waterproof Cosmiques Jacket was deployed over the top and – in the best way possible – I didn’t notice the Whymper at all. This is a good thing – it means it was doing its job successfully as the meat between my outer and my base layer. The athletic cut meant that my jacket fitted on top of it without issue and I had no qualms with the hoody’s freedom of movement.

For warmer season adventures, the Whymper’s low weight and packability are a boon, as it’ll undoubtedly spend as much – if not more – time scrunched into a daypack as it will on your torso. I encountered mild conditions that really put its breathability to the test and it passed with flying colors. It helped me to regulate my temperature more effectively than a standard, thicker fleece would have.

At the end of the day, it’s down to the wearer to choose when to wear it, when to leave the front zip open and when to stash the jacket away. The upshot is that, for a hiking mid-layer, it does everything that’s asked of it.

When it comes to wind resistance, it’s not as effective as a bulkier fleece. This is the obvious compromise when it comes to breathability. I found that strong wintry gusts would penetrate the grid structure when the hoody was worn as an outer. However, as a mid-layer, it’d usually be paired with a wind-blocking softshell or an even more rugged waterproof jacket, so it’s not a big issue.

Being a technical mountain hoody, it’s perhaps not as suited to everyday walks as a standard fleece jacket. There are no handwarmer pockets here for those casual winter ambles and, as mentioned above, it’ll let wind through more readily than some. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy wearing it for the everyday, it’s just that it’s more geared towards technical use.

The Land of Ice and Fire – no, not a new George RR Martin novel, but a country: Iceland.

There’s no doubt that Iceland is one of the most dynamic places on the planet. Here, young, glaciated mountains rise above an interior of immense lava fields. It’s an island that's still being forged, which is host to some of the world’s most active volcanoes. The Aurora Borealis often dance in the sky, while the land is an adventurer’s paradise.

American photographer, adventurer, surfer and filmmaker Chris Burkard has made this astonishing island his home, having fallen for its unique grandeur. For its Ljósufjöll (try saying that after a few bottles of Kaldi Blonde) waterproof jacket, premium Icelandic outdoor brand 66° North collaborated with Burkard in an attempt to create 'the ultimate shell for the wild and adventurous outdoor explorer'. The result was this Gore-Tex shell jacket.

For the uninitiated, 66° North was founded in Suðureyri on the Súgandafjörður fjord by Hans Kristjánsson in 1926. His mission was to craft clothing for fishermen and workers braving the harsh North Atlantic elements. Within two years it was creating gear for Iceland’s search and rescue teams and the rest, as they say, is history. 66° refers to the latitudinal line of the Arctic Circle that crosses Súgandafjörður. By 2019, it had become a carbon neutral company, a commendable achievement.

By any measure, 66° North’s gear isn’t cheap, with some products costing thousands, such as the $2,800 Charlie Constantinou quilt jacket or the $1,250 Jökla Parka. The Ljósufjöll Jacket won’t set you back quite that much, but it still clocks in at a cool $745 (£495 in the UK). So, it’s something of an investment. I was keen to see whether this premium adventurer’s jacket was worth its price tag.

First impressions

I immediately liked the feel and cut of the Ljósufjöll. The inner lining feels lovely against the skin, while its lack of weight and the freedom of movement it provides were immediately apparent. For something designed for the rigors of wild Iceland, it was lighter and less rigid than I was expecting, which suits my fast and light approach to outdoor adventure. So far, so good.

Little touches like the microfleece around the collar and the way the hood stows away impressed me, while closer inspection revealed quality craftsmanship in terms of the stitching and the overall premium feel of the piece.

I was testing the black colorway, which features grey detailing on the logos and zippers. It’s also available in birch brown bolete. Neither are very vibrant, but then 66^o North tend not to go too ostentatious with their color options, with the bright eventide blue of the Snaefell Jacket about as dazzling as it gets.

Highly protective Gore-Tex shell

The Ljósufjöll Jacket features a Gore-Tex membrane to provide a waterproof yet breathable shell. Considering the Ljósufjöll is in the same price bracket as many Gore-Tex Pro jackets, such as the Berghaus MTN Guide, you’d be within your right to expect the most protective technology Gore-Tex can offer. However, this is a much lighter and more flexible jacket than rugged Gore-Tex Pro mountaineering jackets. Its nylon outer is also 100% recycled, which accounts for at least some of the cost, while it’s also PFAS-free.

Weighing in at 12oz (338g), it’s towards the lighter end of the waterproof jacket spectrum, in the same league as Arcterycx’s popular Beta Lighweight Jacket. That’s not to say that it isn’t robust. Its shell is a durable, 40-denier nylon ripstop that’s resistant to abrasion and wear. The Gore-Tex membrane is the meat in the sandwich, effectively repelling water while allowing moisture to escape. Beneath this is a supremely thin C-knit backer that’s designed for ultimate comfort and is soft against the skin. This backer comprises a layer of expanded PTFE that’s lighter and more breathable than most used in other 3-layer jackets.

The upshot of all of this is a waterproof material that’s light, durable, nicely breathable and comfortable to wear. This results in a jacket that can be used across a range of activities. It’s pleasant for everyday wear, rugged enough to tackle wintry adventures and vents well enough for dynamic activities like scrambling, skiing or even running.

This is all enhanced by its articulated fit, one that provides that all-important freedom of movement. I was able to windmill my arms, practise yoga or dance the tango (when the mood took me) without feeling restricted. Only when I crossed my arms and reached in opposite directions did I feel the shell tighten across my back – and it’s not like I’m going to be doing that all too often in the mountains.

Features

As you’d expect from a $745 jacket, the Ljósufjöll has plenty of features. I like the way the hood can be stowed into a zippered compartment in the collar, another feature that adds to the jacket’s versatility. And speaking of the collar, it’s lined by super-soft microfleece that feels great against the skin – even against my bristly, stubbled chin.

When liberated, the hood is adjusted via two pull tabs at the front, which tighten an elasticated cord that runs around the front. It’s designed to be helmet-compatible for activities like scrambling, mountaineering, via ferrata and climbing. The cuffs are adjusted using Velcro tabs and are curved to provide maximum coverage, much like those on the excellent Norrøna Falketind Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket.

The hem features the usual drawcord tabs on either side and is easy to adjust. In terms of coverage for wet weather, the cut doesn’t reach down to the upper thighs, unlike some, though this shouldn’t be an issue when paired with decent rain pants.

In terms of storage, you get two external zippered chest pockets that are placed high enough to still be accessible when wearing a harness or a hiking backpack with an extensive hip belt. These pockets large enough to take a topographical map and are useful for quickly stashing items like a headlamp. There’s also an internal zippered breast pocket that’s just large enough to take a phone.

Further down are a pair of 2-way side zippers. These aren't pockets, but instead open the jacket up, just like pit zips. This provides additional ventilation – a better alternative to unzipping the front when you need to dump heat during strenuous activities. It also enables the wearer another way of accessing the internal pocket or for getting to mid-layers pocketsd and the like.

I really like this feature. It performs the same task as pit zips when it comes to ventilation, while also allowing access beneath the jacket. The fact the zips are 2-way gives plenty of flexibility in terms of how they’re opened up. For casual walks, it’s nice to be able to bury my hands within them, accessing the handwarming pockets of my down or fleece jacket beneath.

All the zippers are YKK and feature the Aquaguard design that forms an effective barrier against water ingress. The pockets and side zippers are laminated, while the full-length middle zipper is backed by a storm flap – a length of the 3-layer face fabric that sits behind the teeth and is ready to stop water in its tracks. Each has a fabric pull with a plastic tip for durability. This enabled me to easily grab them, even when wearing hiking gloves.

On the trails

I’ve been wearing the Ljósufjöll jacket through spring and summer in the UK, braving downpours and exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. 66^o North include 'everyday commuting' among this jacket's uses, so I also wore it for everyday jaunts, such as popping to a café with my daughter. I admittedly found it a tad stressful knowing that the jacket that I’d just hung by the main entrance was worth half a grand. Invariably I’d end up hiding it at the bottom of my daypack, just in case.

Fit wise, it hits the sweet spot: there’s space for additional layers yet it doesn’t look overly baggy when worn with just a base layer. As mentioned, the articulated design provides excellent freedom of movement, while the comfort provided by the C-knit backer makes it a pleasure to wear.

The Ljósufjöll jacket is a solid ally when the weather turns foul, it’s Gore-Tex batting away the rain with ease and enabling me to continue pushing without getting overly stuffy, thanks to superb breathability. The ability to open up the side zippers to let air circulate was ideal. These are much preferable to the contortions needed to open and close the usual pit zips seen on many other jackets.

The only part of the jacket I didn’t get on with brilliantly was the hood. When tightened it pulls the peak forward, restricting vision. At the back of the hood are two buttons that enabled me to pull it back slightly, though I still wasn’t as enamored with it as with jackets that offer 3-way adjustability. In challenging conditions, it felt a little claustrophobic when tightened and I was acutely aware of it around my face with every head movement.

However, other than this qualm, the Ljósufjöll is a jacket of significant quality that has the versatility to be pretty much the only waterproof shell you’d ever need. Sure, some climbers and mountaineers wedded to the rugged qualities of a Gore-Tex Pro jacket may want to stick with such an option but for everything and everyone else, this jacket does it all.

Arc'teryx is one of the most in-demand outdoor brands at the moment, crafting top-notch hiking, trail-running, and winter sports gear to help outdoor goers do what they love most in comfort. So, you can imagine my surprise when I found one of their dependable waterproof jackets reduced by almost $180.

The Men's Arc'teryx Beta AR jacket aims to combine breathability with dependable protection from the elements, and is now available for just $420.93 at REI.

First impressions

Columbia has long built a reputation on making no-nonsense, hard-wearing outdoor gear – and the Oak Harbor II Insulated Jacket fits squarely into that ethos. It’s a robust, insulated, waterproof jacket, designed for cold-weather hiking and general winter use. It’s not ultralight, it’s not flashy, and it certainly doesn’t roll up to the size of a grapefruit. But it doesn’t need to.

At 2.1lb (950g) in a men’s medium, this is a jacket that you wear out the door knowing you’ll be in it all day. You’re not stuffing this in the bottom of your hiking backpack for emergencies – it’s too bulky for that. Pack size wise, it compresses down to something akin to a two-season synthetic sleeping bag, or a chunky four-season down bag. Could you take it wild camping or backpacking? Sure. But it’ll take up a noticeable chunk of your pack. That’s why this is a jacket best suited to being worn from the get-go, and mostly on day hikes.

It’s also not trying to be something it isn’t. The list price puts it firmly in the mid-range, and for what you get (solid waterproofing, decent insulation, and Columbia’s heat-reflective liner) it’s a respectable price point. Add in the fact that Columbia frequently discounts this jacket, and it starts to look like a bit of a bargain for anyone who needs a warm, weatherproof coat for cold hikes or everyday winter duties.

In the wild

I tested the Oak Harbor II over several weeks across a mix of chilly winter hikes and wildcamping trips in southern England. It came with me on brisk treks in the Chilterns, a long walk across the South Downs, and two wild nights under canvas in damp local woodland. The conditions ranged from crisp, dry 46°F (8°C) afternoons to just-above-freezing nights, with plenty of classic British drizzle thrown in for good measure.

Throughout all of it, the jacket performed reliably. It kept me dry on the move and stayed warm when I stopped, especially when layered over a decent midlayer. It’s not the sort of jacket you chuck on for 15 minutes at a time – it comes into its own when you’re wearing it for hours, adjusting the zips and toggles as the weather shifts. On uphill climbs, the main zip helped dump excess heat, and when the wind picked up, it was easy to cinch everything back down again to keep the warmth in. That versatility made it feel just as useful around camp as it did out on the trail.

Features

There’s a lot going on with the Oak Harbor II, but the first thing that really stands out – both visually and in use – is the Omni-Heat Infinity liner. It’s a gold, foil-like material that lines the inside of the jacket, that was originally inspired by NASA's space blankets. But it’s not just for show. This stuff actually works. It reflects your body heat back at you, and because it’s focused around the torso – covering all your vital organs – it creates a bubble of warmth remarkably quickly. Even on a damp, cold hillside, I could feel the heat rebounding off it before the insulation itself had even caught up.

Now, it’s not down. It doesn’t puff up with immediate warmth in freezing temperatures. But for anyone who values that near-instant feeling of heat after a long climb or a cold lunch stop, it’s a game-changer – particularly when worn over a decent midlayer.

Then there’s the waterproofing. I tested this jacket through multiple rainstorms, and it shrugged off most of what the British weather could throw at it. In really prolonged rain, yes, the outer fabric will wet out, and the hand pockets do eventually start to soak through – especially because they’re fleece-lined, which means they hold water. But I never felt cold or soggy underneath, and crucially, that chest pocket stayed dry throughout. When your phone or map lives in there, that matters.

The hood’s another win. It’s not helmet compatible, but it does everything else right. There’s a Velcro adjustment at the back and two pull cords around the chin, which means you can cinch it down properly when the wind picks up. Once tightened, it stays put – no flapping or slipping, even when turning your head – which made it genuinely useful in driving rain.

Columbia’s designers have made the jacket glove-friendly too. The wrist cuffs are thick and easy to grip with cold fingers or bulky hiking gloves, and they cinch tight to block out drafts. I found myself fiddling with them far less than with other winter jackets. Same goes for the hem adjustment – simple cord locks that you can use with numb hands and still trust to stay locked in place.

When it comes to storage options, the pockets on this thing are practical and well placed. There’s a roomy internal pocket for anything you want to keep secure and dry – wallet, phone, torch – and two big fleece-lined hand pockets that are an absolute joy when the temperature drops. Genuinely, those hand pockets do a better job at warming up icy fingers than most gloves. Just be aware: if it’s raining hard and you’re using them frequently, they will eventually soak through.

Lastly, the zippers. It might sound minor, but when a jacket’s zips are waterproof, reliable and refuse to snag – even in freezing wet conditions – it changes your whole experience. On one particularly grim day in the South Downs, with gusts ripping across the ridge and sleet blowing sideways, I was able to zip up fast, stay warm and carry on. No wrestling with sticky pulls or trying to realign zips with numb hands. Just simple, solid functionality that does exactly what it should.

Durability

The Oak Harbor II isn’t trying to be the lightest or most technical jacket in your kit cupboard – but for cold-weather hikes, wild camps and winter days around town, it gets a lot right. The Omni-Heat Infinity liner genuinely makes a difference, helping you warm up quickly after periods of exertion. The waterproofing is dependable, and the features – from the fleece-lined hand pockets to the solid zip system – make it easy to wear all day in mixed conditions.

It’s certainly on the heavier side, and the pack size rules it out for gram-counting backpackers or alpine climbers. But for the rest of us – the walkers, the dog owners, the casual campers – it offers real value and functionality. Especially when you catch it in the sales.

Would I carry it on a thru-hike or a remote mountain trip? Probably not. But would I throw it on for a drizzly January hike or a frosty evening under the tarp? Absolutely. It keeps you warm, keeps you dry, and does so without needing much fuss or thought. For a winter jacket that you can trust to just work, the Oak Harbor II is well worth a look.

Last week, we revealed that Patagonia’s perennially popular Nano Puff jacket has just got a rugged new cousin, and now we’ve learned that the Nano Puff itself has received a glow up for fall.

The first Nano Puff dropped all the way back in 2009, which doesn’t sound that long ago, but that makes it older than iPads, Hoka running shoes and Instagram to put it in historical perspective.

Anyway, it was designed as a go-to jacket for any outdoor activity and it’s seen a few changes and upgrades over the years, including switching to PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco in 2016, (made with 55% recycled content) which was created after Patagonia asked the insulation tech wizards to help them cut down on their impact on the planet without reducing the performance of the jacket.

In the eyes of many hikers, climbers and skiers, the Nano Puff is practically perfect and comes with us all year round, but the brand never seems to stop finding small ways to make it better.

For fall 2025, the new Patagonia Nano Puff jacket allows for better mobility with more room in the shoulders. That’s bound to make it better for climbing and for layering as the weather gets colder.

The jacket has only just hit the shelves, but it’s already garnered one glowing review from a fan who says the updated fit is an improvement, writing: “This jacket gives you a bit of wiggle room without issue, which is heavily appreciated.”

That same customer reports that the new jacket is warmer than last year’s model, and if that’s true, it may be down to the standardized quilt pattern that features bigger bricks.

Now, obviously you can wear the Nano Puff to the grocery store or to drink a beer on your front porch, but it’s built for action so it needs to stand up to the demands of backpack straps and harnesses. That’s why Patagonia has also tweaked the thread tension and stitching to improve the jacket’s abrasion resistance, which should keep it in play for longer.

The new roomier, tougher (and warmer?) Patagonia Nano Puff is available now as a jacket, hoody or vest in both men’s and women’s sizing in a ton of classy colorways for $229, which is slightly cheaper than it was four years ago. Of course, this news means you might find older models at a nice price too.

When Patagonia released the first Nano Puff jacket back in 2009, it became an instant hit among hikers, climbers and skiers who love its lightweight warmth and versatility. While the original is great for cool spring and fall days as an outer layer and a perfect mid layer in colder weather, it lacks the oomph required for frigid temperatures. But now, the California brand has dropped a new Nano Puff that's ready for winter.

Calling it "the Nano Puff's burlier cousin," the all-new Patagonia Hi-Loft Nano Puff is a synthetic puffer jacket that's warmer and tougher than its lightweight cousin.

When you need to bundle up against the windchill, the Hi-Loft is packed with 170g and 200g PrimaLoft Silver insulation Eco, made from recycled polyester and known for its excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. Of course, it keeps insulting if you get wet, making for a better barrier against winter conditions, but it's treated with a PFAS-free DWR to help you stay dry in nasty weather.

The insulation is packed in a 4in Nano Puff brick pattern that helps with loft (and therefore, heat trapping), and it's all wrapped inside a recycled polyester shell and lining that's reinforced at the shoulders with tough overlays that help protect your jacket against the demands of your backpack.

There's a helmet-compatible hood that's adjustable to cinch tight against the wind, whether you're searching for a campsite or on belay, a two-way zipper so you can easily access your harness or inner pockets, and speaking of pockets, the one on the chest is plenty big enough to hold your phone.

All in, the Hi-Loft looks so good we're starting to wish winter would get here already. It's available now for $329 / £280 from Patagonia in men's sizing in Black, Forge Grey, Pond Green and Clement Blue, and in women's sizing in Black, Smolder Blue, Cascade Green, Dark Ruby and Dark Green.

Fjällräven is one of the world's best-known outdoor brands. The Swedish company, which began its life in the 1960s, is loved by outdoor enthusiasts from across the globe for its stellar range of dependable garments. However, its great reputation often comes with a hefty price tag, and Fjällräven gear is known for being expensive.

As expert Alex Foxfield explains: "The primary reasons Fjällräven is so expensive are that its products are of exceptional quality, featuring highly durable and ethically sourced materials; they have a commitment to sustainable practices."

Because of this, decent Fjällräven deals aren't exactly common, so we were pleasantly surprised to find the lightweight and insulating High Coast jacket reduced to just $129.46 at Backcountry.

This snug hiking jacket is designed to offer some much-needed warmth and comfort when you're trekking in biting winds and along exposed ridgelines.

It's made from an airy combination of recycled nylon and organic cotton and won't weigh you down as you navigate the trails. This minimal design is great for on-the-go adventures in varied weather, as it can be folded up and stuffed into a backpack without adding any unnecessary heft.

Several zippered pockets also come in handy on the trails, providing plenty of room to store snacks and other essentials as you hike.

It's been 25 years since Arc'teryx first launched the Beta Jacket, but the Canadian brand still hasn't finished perfecting it.

The brand new Arc'teryx Beta AR, launching July 31, boasts a more sustainable approach to protecting you against the worst of the weather when you're pushing to the summit (or even picking the kids up from school).

The very first Beta jacket, which the brand describes as its all-mountain hardshell, came out all the way back in 2000. Four years later, a lighter version was released, while updates in 2007 and 2010 focused on making the seams and zippers more waterproof (the brand famously introduced the WaterTight zipper to the outdoor industry).

The 2013 Beta boasted more rugged fabric, while the jacket received emergency technology (an embedded RECCO reflector) in 2020 and the awesome StormHood in 2023, which keeps you totally sheltered when rain is mixed with a howling gale.

Could the Beta get any better? Arc'teryx certainly thinks so, and is calling the AR "the best yet."

Meet the Beta AR

For the next Beta evolution, Arc'teryx has, unsurprisingly, gone all in on sustainability. We say it's unsurprising because the brand is known for its efforts to improve the circularity of its gear with initiatives such as its ReBird program.

So what's different? Probably the most key update is that the Beta AR features the new PFAS-free Gore-Tex waterproof membrane. You can learn more about this in our article on the fabric, but suffice to say that it's made using a non-fluorinated process, so it's entirely PFC-free.

It’s more durable than its predecessor, but also 50 percent thinner than the previous membrane, which means it uses less resources in production, and Gore-Tex has switched to Dope Dying its fabrics, where the dying process takes place at the yarn level, meaning that far less water is used than dying the finished product. The membrane is bonded to fabrics containing recycled materials and treated with an FC-free DWR treatment.

In terms of the Beta AR, this doesn't actually mean the jacket is lighter than the previous design, but that's mostly because Arc'teryx has taken the opportunity to add in new features, such as helmet-compatible DropHood construction that lets you move your head without your vision being obscured and durable internal cordlocks in the hood for adjustability. They've also moved the hand pockets so you can accesss them when you're wearing your backpack, and that's a welcome improvement if ever we saw one.

Finally, the design team at Arc'teryx has revised the pattern of the jacket. They say it's still got a regular, articulated fit with room for layers, but in manufacturing, it substantially cuts down on waste, they tell us to the tune of "400 jackets worth of material in the production process."

The Arc'teryx Beta AR weighs 13.9oz (395g) in women's sizing and 16.2oz (460g) in men's sizing. It will be available from July 31 from XXS to XXL in multiple colorways and, no surprises, the price has gone up a little $650 / £600.

What about all those old Beta jackets?

Clearly, the updated Beta is good news for the planet going forward, but not if everyone tosses their perfectly good jacket in the landfill, so if yours still works, hang on to it, or use the Arc'teryx trade in program for an uprgade if you're in North America.

Similarly, it doesn't make sense for retailers to dispose of perfectly good jackets that already exist to make room for new, PFAS-free gear and the brand issued the following statement to us on this matter:

"Arc'teryx doesn't believe in sending good products to landfill, and is committed to reducing waste. Because of this, Arc'teryx will be selling through Legacy Product - that is, products produced before any legislation came into effect, which may contain PFAS - beyond the initial 2025 deadline, in accordance with any legislation."

So older model Beta jackets are no longer in production, but still available. We're telling you this because chances are you'll be able to get a good deal on an older (but still great) Beta jacket from Arc'teryx ReBird soon.

Founded in the years after the Second World War in Annecy, in the French Alps, Salomon is one of Europe’s most successful outdoor brands and has been at the forefront of trail running gear for decades. It also crafts reputable hiking, mountaineering, road running, gravel running (yes, it’s a thing), skiing and snowboarding equipment.

With the Mountain Flex jacket, Salomon has collaborated with the folk at Primaloft to create a lightweight insulated softshell jacket that provides warmth and breathability in equal measure. There are two version of the jacket: one’s hooded and the other isn’t. If you ever wondered how much you were paying for the pleasure of having a hood – the price difference is $20 (£20). Considering exchange rates, it seems American’s get a better deal on hoods.

I got hold of the hooded version and set out to test the jacket, which Salomon says is perfect for hiking, everyday use and winter adventures.

First impressions

This is quite an understated jacket, featuring a single solid color and subtle Salomon lettering on the left breast and the brand’s S logo on the right wrist. I was testing the Grape Leaf colorway (EU only), an attractive green that had me blending in nicely with the local hills. Come nighttime, both the logo and Salomon lettering are highly reflective.

I like that there’s a smooth felt panel at the chin – a little dash of luxury – and an internal zippered pocket too. The hem and hood adjustment toggles are also really nicely designed, making both easy to tighten and loosen. It’s got a relaxed, regular fit, which is good when it comes to freedom of movement. It won’t be hitting the catwalk at Paris fashion week but I’m sure geography teachers will like it.

Star materials

The Mountain Flex gets its insulating qualities from its Primaloft fill. Interestingly, the jacket features what Salomon calls ClimateSync venting. The insulated fill is laser cut in the form of three-point stars, which you can see if you hold the jacket up to the light (see image above). Apparently these open up when you’re moving and close when you’re stationary. This has the effect of allowing air flow during dynamic activities while holding the warmth in when exertion ceases.

Freedom of movement is an oft-cited benefit of a softshell jacket when compared to a more rigid waterproof hardshell. This is often achieved with stretchy outer fabrics. You’ll often hear brands talk of two- or four-way stretch, which refers to the way a given material can stretch. In a nutshell, four-way means a fabric can stretch both horizontally and vertically, where two-way means it can only move horizontally or vertically.

In the case of the Mountain Flex, we’ve got ourselves a two-way stretch mixture of 86% polyamide and 14% elastane, providing that little bit of extra freedom when climbing, running or scrambling. It’s also a ripstop fabric, which means its resistant to tearing, to a point. Just promise me you won’t attack it with your crampon spikes.

The shell fabric is treated with durable water repellent (DWR), the same sort of coating usually applied to waterproof jackets. DWR acts like a forcefield, shielding the jacket from water ingress. However, unlike a waterproof jacket, the Mountain Flex doesn’t have an additional layer of Gore-Tex or similar as a definitive barrier against the wet. This means that once the DWR forcefield is beached, it’ll quickly get wet. The upshot of this is that the jacket is nice for fending off light rain or showers, especially as it’s so quick drying. However, for prolonged downpours and miserably wet days, a full waterproof is the outer shell you’ll need.

The standard features

As jacket features go, there’s nothing that surprises you here – just the tried and tested mainstays. Hand warmer pockets. Tick. Adjustable hood and hem. Tick. Interior zippered pocket. Tick. You get the picture.

Handwarmer pockets are a no brainer on insulated jackets and those that don’t include them irk me. Thank you for including them, Salomon. I’d much rather not have to wear hiking gloves for casual walks – handwarmer pockets allow me to leave them at home. There are no exterior chest pockets, which I suppose has the drawback that there’s nowhere to quickly stash things while wearing a harness, but this is a minor gripe.

The interior pocket is relatively small, too small to take a standard topographical map, which seems a shame. However, it’s better to have one than not and is a good place to keep your phone warm and safe in the sort of freezing conditions that will quickly drain its battery.

There’s a dash of luxury at the top of the zipper, where a lovely, soft panel of fabric lies in wait to caress your chin. This is designed to halt zipper irritation while walking and it works.

There’s adjustability at both the hem and the hood, though the cuffs are nothing more than elasticated. The drawcord tabs on both the hood and the two on the hem are very nicely engineered. They tighten with a simple pull, loosen with a press and a pull and are dead easy to manipulate, even when wearing gloves.

On the trails

I tested the Mountain Flex Insulated Jacket on everyday walks and during hiking days in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park during the late spring and early summer.

It’s an easy jacket to get on with, as it’s so fuss free, which makes it a great choice for just grabbing on the way out the house. The handwarmer pockets mean you don’t have to worry about gloves and the interior pocket is ideal for items like keys.

It’s good in the high places too: a solid operator during the shoulder seasons, when its subtle warmth is enough to keep things toasty, while its breathable qualities mean that you don’t overheat. It stuffs down smaller than a down jacket, so doesn’t take up much room in a daypack either. The reflective branding is all good and well, but the lack of this on the back of the jacket means it’s not a good choice if you’re walking, running or cycling along the road at night.

Emerging victorious after a couple of downpours, I can attest to the fact that the Mountain Flex is relatively water-resistant, and I was also impressed at how quickly it was fully dry again afterwards. However, it’s by no means fully waterproof…

Here’s the thing. I live in the UK, which has a maritime climate – a wet one at that. Thanks for that, Mr Atlantic. Our winters feature wet cold. Our summers are often wet too, though extended dry spells aren’t unheard of. What I’m driving at is that, as good as the Mountain Flex Insulated Jacket is, I’d get far more use out of it in the mountains if I lived somewhere with a dry climate. When it comes to loading my backpack for a mountain adventure in the UK, I’m definitely packing a waterproof jacket, no matter what the forecast. Packing two jackets is an indulgence and a heavy one at that. I’d always opt for a better insulated emergency down jacket over a lightly insulated softshell.

That’s not to say the Mountain Flex isn’t fine for everyday wear during the colder months. I guess the issue here is that, to me at least, it's not particularly stylish, especially if you're shelling out over $200. So, if you’re after a quality jacket for hiking in dry climates, it’s a good shout. If you’re looking for a nice, lightly insulated jacket for everyday life during the colder months, its a functional option. If you’re looking to purchase a jacket for wet climbs in wet climes, save your cash for a waterproof.

Conditions on Britain's tallest mountain are unforgiving all year round.

I took on Scotland's Ben Nevis last month, and despite it being June, temperatures were touching freezing, with biting winds up to 50 miles per hour (80.4kmph). There was also the constant rainfall, which was often light and occasionally very heavy.

I didn't get to the top in the end, but only managed to make it as far as I did because I was wearing some great kit, including my mountain-ready Helly Hansen shell jacket, which has had its price slashed on Amazon.

Haglöfs’ ZT II GTX jacket: a review

First impressions

The unimaginative name may make it sound like a bit-part robot in a Star Wars off-shoot series, but the ZT II GTX really has star power. It's the latest top-end shell layer to emerge from Haglöfs’ highly regarded L.I.M. (Less Is More) range of alpine-orientated apparel.

The series features gear designed to be ultra lightweight while remaining capable of withstanding rough, tough conditions and performing at a peak level in extreme scenarios, such as when you’re clinging to the side of a mountain, and this shell is the pinnacle piece of the new ensemble. More than merely a good waterproof jacket, it’s a very technical piece of kit, intended to protect the wearer from the worst the elements can throw at a person.

This is the second iteration of this coat – I had the pleasure of testing the first version of the L.I.M. ZT GTX Pro jacket in the Scottish mountains a couple of years ago, including during a very late-season fastpacking escapade along the West Highland Way. That turned out to be was the wettest adventure I have ever experienced outside the ocean, and I was profoundly impressed with its performance.

I still wonder how it managed to keep that volume of water from getting through and soaking my fleece jacket and base layers, but together with the matching and equally impressive L.I.M. ZT Shell GTX Pro Pants (easily the best waterproof pants I’ve ever tested), it did just that, for three-and-a-half drenched days. This combination remains my go-to shell layer of choice for extreme outings in wet and wild conditions, so I was intrigued to see how Haglöfs might have improved on the design.

As you would expect, with this second-generation waterproof jacket the slick Swedish brand has produced an extremely good-looking garment made from the very best materials, which immediately appears mountain ready. It has impressive specs and the sort of lab-test stats (in terms of waterproofing levels and breathability) that suggest it will deliver the goods in the hills and shine bright amongst the peaks no matter how gnarly the conditions get.

At first touch it did feel conspicuously light however, and of course it comes with the kind of price tag that makes me shiver, so I was looking forward to seeing just how well it would keep me warm and dry when the elements turned nasty.

Materials

Bluesign-approved and constructed from 100% recycled polyamide – using the new and more environmentally friendly ePE laminate, which is entirely PFC-free – this three-layer Gore-Tex jacket is almost 5oz (150g) lighter than its predecessor. It’s thinner (with a fabric density of 15 denier as opposed to 40 on the older version) but retains the same sky high hydrostatic head rating of 28,000mm.

The breathability stats are reasonable too, with a RET (Resistance to Evaporative Heat Loss) test result of 13, which means it's suitable for active, high-output pursuits, where you're likely to get a proper sweat on – like fastpacking, wet-weather rock climbing and mountaineering (although, the thicker, heavier L.I.M. ZT GTX Pro had an even more impressive RET-rating of 6, making it considerably more breathable).

Behind the weather-proof layers, the jacket boasts Gore C-Knit backer technology, which makes it smooth and comfortable to wear, no matter what you have on underneath. The seams are off course all sealed, the zips are water resistant and all feature easy use cord pulls.

Design

The style and positioning of the pockets on the ZT II GTX reflect the intended use of the jacket. Placed where they remain easily accessible and highly useful when you are wearing a climbing harness, hiking backpack or a daypack, the left pocket is smaller, intended for storing a smart phone or other device, while the right pocket is much more capacious. Both have waterproof, vertical zips with brightly colored cord pulls so you can operate them with cold hands, or when you have gloves on.

Although thin and featherlight, the jacket is made more robust with several reinforced areas, on the shoulders and inner cuffs, to protect against rubbing damage from wearing backpacks, using trekking poles and coming into contact with abrasive terrain.

There is a chin guard at the top of the main zip, and the hood - which is easily adjustable with drawcords - has a soft brim. Cuffs can be tightened to wrists and gloves with a single Velcro strap, to keep breezes out. The asymmetrical bottom hem covers the top of your bum, and is adjustable via toggles. There’s also a popper at the bottom of the main zip, for extra security, but there’s no snow skirt.

The jacket – although only available in one, rather dark and dowdy main color – does feature a bright hood and several reflective features to make you visible in the event of an emergency, or when you’re sharing the hills with hunters and/or the tracks with vehicles. Given the price, however, it’s a pity there is no RECCO reflector included in this jacket.

When not in use, the jacket stuffs away into the larger pocket and is so light and packable that it fits into a running vest or hydration pack, and makes for an excellent emergency layer for taking out on longer runs and ultra events, where waterproof protection is often stipulated in the compulsory gear list. When packed, it even makes a great camping pillow.

On the trails and in the hills and peaks

I’ve been wearing the Haglöfs ZT II GTX jacket in a range of conditions while hiking and scrambling across various terrain over the last couple of months, from the hills and crags of the Mendips to the moors and tors of Dartmoor. For much of the time, conditions have been relatively mild, but with occasionally very high winds, and I can attest to the windproof credentials of this coat. In more recent weeks we’ve had some very heavy rain too, and the ZT II GTX has kept me bone dry in even the worst downpours while I’ve been completely exposed on the moor.

For a three-layer outershell with a hydrostatic head of 28,000mm, the ZT II GTX really is incredibly lightweight and thin, which makes it extremely easy to pack and carry, especially when it’s stuffed into the large chest pocket. This is ideal in all kinds of scenarios, from fastpacking and ultra running, through to summer peak bagging when you’re only taking a shell layer as a precaution.

It’s worth bearing in mind, however, especially in winter conditions and at any sort of serious altitude, that while this jacket can offer protection from windchill and wet weather, its thermal properties are quite low. It needs to be paired with a good midlayer when used in such conditions, such as a puffer jacket.

This amazingly lightweight jacket is expressly designed for fast-paced adventures where you might need protection from the rain, but you’re also likely to generate heat and build up a sweat. The jacket itself breathes well, and I have been using it in conjunction with the newest elements of Haglöfs L.I.M. range, including the L.I.M. ZT Flex Trousers, the ZT Air Base Layer top and ZT Air Mid Layer, which have been designed to work together – the tops really do complement the shell layer perfectly in reasonably mild conditions.

As well as being sealed the seams are off-set, which helps with comfort levels, and I found the backing material to have a nice next-to-skin feel when I was wearing the jacket with a short-sleeved base layer or just a technical T-shirt underneath.

As mentioned, the breathability of the jacket is good, but there are no pit zips to help you quickly dump excess heat. Omitting these helps keep the weight down, but personally I’d prefer to carry a few more ounces and have access to such vents.

A massive positive about this jacket is how wonderfully silent it is. Some breathable waterproof shells make it sounds as though you’re walking around in a plastic wrapper, crinkling and crackling like someone eating crisps in a cinema, but there is no such annoying audio with the ZT II GTX jacket – it’s super stealthy.

When Patagonia launched the Nano Puff jacket back in 2009, it set a new gold standard for mid layers. The jacket has evolved over the years to become more sustainable, with the addition of PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco in 2017, but the basic recipe of a lightweight and warm jacket that can be worn on the outside in the shoulder seasons and between layers in winter has proved perennially popular. Never one to rest on its laurels, however, Patagonia has just dropped a new mid layer this season that, for some, might just be a worthy opponent to the Nano Puff.

The Patagonia Light Gust Jacket is a lightweight, insulated jacket that the brand says is a "full-zip staple for mixed weather and traveling light," but it has a few key differences compared to the Nano Puff.

Instead of PrimaLoft, it's packed with Patagonia's proprietary warm 60-g Thermogreen insulation (made with 100% recycled polyester) to keep the chill out, and in place of the shiny outer fabric, it boasts a more retro matte shell. The shell and lining are made with 70% recycled polyester treated with a PFAS-free DWR, and unlike the Nano Puff, it's stretchy for increased movement.

Though the jacket has only just hit the shelves, several enthusiastic fans have already reviewed it, with one saying it's "way better than the nano puff" thanks in part to that added stretch.

"I see this jacket as the nano puff's competitor, and this wipes the floor with it. This jacket has way more movement and feels lighter."

The press images show the Light Gust to have a slightly more boxy cut, which is definitely more on trend these days, and looks a little less technical in appearance to the Nano Puff, but it still looks slim enough that you could layer your Patagonia Torrentshell over the top without any issues, and buyers note that it fits true to size.

The design features larger-sized baffles pattern compared to the Nano Puff which gives it a more old-school quilted look and this might be one of those jackets you end up wearing to the bar or at school pickup as well as on the trail.

If you're in the market for a new layer this spring and comparing this to the Nano Puff, it's worth noting that the Light Gust, while not exactly heavy, is heavier at 439g compared to the Nano Puff's 337g. That places it about midweight compared to other softshell jackets we've tested.

It's also the same price as the Nano Puff, at $239 / £230, so it all comes down to whether you can afford those few extra grams for a jacket you might wear more often, or need to keep your pack as light as possible.

The main gripe we're seeing from those who have tested is the lack of an internal pocket to stash valuables like your phone and wallet, and that's something you will find on the Nano Puff. However, it does feature a zipped chest pocket.

Spring has always been the season to lighten up, and it seems Patagonia has taken that directive literally, with a major overhaul of its perennially popular Nano-Air jacket.

The Patagonia Nano-Air Ultralight Hoody takes the ingredients that made the original 2014 design so successful – stretchy, breathable warmth provided by innovative FullRange insulation with a buttery soft shell – and has shaved a serious amount of weight off.

At 400g, the original Nano-Air wasn't exactly heavy, but the Nano-Air Ultralight barely tips the scales at all at just 249g for men's (215g for women's) with 20g of insulation compared to the original's 60g. With that, it's cut all the way down on bulk with a slim fit that's ideal for layering in colder seasons. That means it's also more breathable than ever, and ideal for high-output activities on these spring days when the weather can be cooler than you expected but you don't want to have to stop and strip off layers.

The brand says that, like its predecessors, the compressible, stretchy design and underarm panels of the Ultralight let you move in all directions, even when it's worn under a harness or a backpack. The ripstop polyester shell might be soft to the touch, but it's designed to hold up against rubbing straps too.

The collar comes up extra high for protection against a brisk wind, and the passive hood is designed to stay put without messing with toggles, and fits under a helmet. If you encounter a light rain, it's treated with a DWR (PFAS-free of course).

This jacket is one you'll be working up a sweat in, and we're glad to see it's easy to chuck in the washing machine when it needs freshening up. At first glance, it looks like an even lighter alternative to the Montane Fireball Lite and should be a strong contender for a year-round layer that staves off a morning chill and also acts as a great mid layer in winter.

If you love the outdoors, chances are you've given more than a passing thought to the conflict between updating worn out kit, while still minimising your impact on the planet.

Manufacturers have been working hard on this issue, with many increasing their use of recycled materials, offering repair schemes, and more.

Now outdoor brand Berghaus has gone one step further, unveiling a design that uses insulating plant fibers derived from regenerative farming practices.

The company has joined forces with biomaterials firm Ponda to create a concept product that aims to demonstrate how outdoor clothing can move beyond harmful materials and have an actively positive effect on the environment.

The insulated women's jacket uses Ponda's BioPuff wadding, with removable sections so wearers can adapt to changing weather. Instead of using feathers or synthetic fillers, Ponda's BioPuff insulation is sourced by extracting the fibers of plants that aid wetland regeneration.

Wetlands are very effective carbon sinks. Despite covering only 5% to 8% of Earth's surface, they hold some 225 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO²).

Known as paludiculture farming, BioPuff's regenerative production process helps to restore wetlands by sequestering carbon and 're-wetting' areas.

Ponda claims that BioPuff production uses 88% less CO² than goose down and 19% less than synthetic materials.

Berghaus's concept design will be used as the inspiration for a BioPuff line of insulating outdoor gear, due to launch this autumn. After the initial release, Berghaus hopes to increase its BioPuff range season-on-season.

"For regenerative materials to become industry standard, collaboration is essential," a company spokesperson said.

"The aim of Ponda and Berghaus is not to make small changes, but to reshape the way textiles are made through a model that works with nature, not against it."

The clothing industry is a major contributor to the climate crisis, responsible for an estimated 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon emissions each year; about 10% of global emissions.

Coziness is king for Voited, an eco-conscious brand specializing in blankets, wearable robes, hammocks, slippers and storage solutions for travellers. The featured hashtag on its website is Step Into Comfort and its associated imagery is all life on the road and golden sands. However, it’s clear that mountain-loving nations are digging its toasty offerings, with Austria, Switzerland and Germany its best performing markets in Europe, where the company was founded, along with the UK.

The Slumber Jacket is an intriguing part of the brand’s Camping Companions collection. Coined a Convertible Sleep Walker, in effect it’s a wearable sleeping bag with arms and a convertible bottom that can be opened for strolling around or closed for drinking mulled wine in your camping chair or for a bit of shut eye. It’s not the kind of puffer jacket you’d pack for a hiking adventure – though I can imagine various use cases beyond camping, such as for warming up after a wild swim or surf, watching your kids play soccer on a blustery January morning, a winter stroll along the beach or even just getting very cozy for a Ben & Jerry’s (other non-UPF snacks are available) fuelled Netflix binge (other streaming services are also available).

First impressions

To look at, the design is serious rather than playful. This is a jacket that suggests outdoor elegance and premium quality rather than multi-colored, music festival headiness – though I can well imagine the Slumber Jacket being a worthy companion at Glastonbury or Coachella. It’s lovely to wear and perhaps not quite as warm as I was anticipating. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – with a long jacket like this I’d prefer a subtle toastiness to something that gets stuffy once you start walking. And then I put my hands in the fleece-lined handwarmer pockets and I was in heaven. Sold!

It didn’t take long to figure out how to convert the jacket into a sleeping bag and back again. Its simple, zippered design makes for a quick and straightforward transformation. Fit wise, it was pretty much spot on as a jacket, though I feel it could have been a little longer as a sleeping bag. I found that my toes were right up against the end of the foot compartment when lying flat and it felt a little restrictive. However, I was a little comfier lying on my side with a bend at my knees, though there was still a little tension.

Sustainable materials

Voited makes use of a few external providers to create the Slumber Jacket: PrimaLoft, REPREVE, Rudolf Group and YKK have all brought something to the party, and usually with an eye on sustainability.

The Slumber Jacket uses PrimaLoft polyester microfibers to achieve its insulating qualities. Synthetic fill has the benefit that no geese or ducks were exploited in the creation of the jacket, as well as the fact that it maintains its insulating ability when wet. In this case, it’s PrimaLoft’s RISE that provides the warmth. Features that set RISE apart from some of the competition are its ability to recover from compression, as well as its high levels of durability. The former is important here, as the Slumber Jacket arrives in a stuff sack and, when unfurled, it’s a bit of a beast to store and transport. So, I can well imagine it spending a good portion of its life packed into its sack – though hanging is always preferable for this kind of product.

RISE is created from post-consumer recycled materials, so gets something of a tick in the sustainability stakes. However, we’re still talking about polyester microfibers here, so there’s still the issue that these kinds of non-biodegradable microplastics can and do end up in our oceans. The only answer here is to try not to wash the jacket too often, as the microplastics will leach out. Nevertheless, some will see the fact that it is indeed machine washable as a strength – not all wearable robe-style jackets are.

The insulation leads to a comfort rating of 11°C (52°F), a limit rating of 7°C (45°F) and an extreme rating of -5°C (23°F). If used as a sleeping bag, this puts it in the 2-season category – one for camping during the warmer summer nights. As a jacket for beach strolls and the like, it’ll form a great team with your radiated body heat throughout the year.

The outer shell features 50-denier REPREVE polyester. REPREEVE is a sustainable manufacturer of performance fibers and resin, crafted from recycled materials such as plastic bottles and fabric and yarn waste. The interior polyester lining is also woven from recycled materials. Meanwhile, the shell’s polyester is treated with a fluorine-free water repellent, BIONIC-FINISH ECO, to provide a protective layer against wet weather. This treatment, created by Rudolf Group, is made from up to 90% bio-based, raw materials. Voited states a 13,000mm hydrostatic head rating, which adds up to a decent level of protection from precipitation but not enough to keep you dry for extended periods in heavy rain.

Features

The obvious USP of the Slumber Jacket is the way it converts between a puffer and a sleeping bag. A zippered compartment tidily houses the retractable feet section, which pulls out and is closed up using another zipper – a clever design. The zipper leaves two gaps at either end of the teeth, which does allow a certain amount of heat to escape, though this is covered loosely by the fabric hem at the bottom of the jacket.

As you’d expect for such a premium product, there are a few nice touches. The hood is 3-way adjustable, allowing you to tailor the fit to the conditions. The sleeve boasts a hand gaiter with a thumb loop for a nice bit of additional warmth, while the cuffs can be tightened via Velcro tabs. Gloved hands have been considered with the ring pull on the main YKK zipper and in the button openings on the handwarmer pockets. Speaking of which…

I’m a big fan of lovely handwarmer pockets and these are some of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of dipping my digits into. The backhand side of the pocket is lined with a heavenly fleece panel that’s luxurious to the touch and nicely warming. Voited has opted for a button closure rather than a zipper, which I think is a good choice – running your hand across a zipper’s teeth when you go to nest it in the pocket doesn’t quite convey comfort. These aren’t pockets for a phone or keys – these are very much designed for your hands.

The large stuff sack features a drawcord closure and there are no compression straps – clearly Voited isn’t too concerned about compact packability. There's also a handy length of fabric on the bottom of the sack that you can grab when pulling the jacket out through the other side.

In the field

I tested the Slumber Jacket over the winter season, where it saw plenty of use as a jacket on wintry strolls but not a great deal of use as a sleeping bag, given that it’s rated for summer camping use. I'm looking forward to seeing how it fares on summer camping trips, but we've got a couple of months before this becomes a possibility. However, I did use the Slumber Jacket as a sleeping bag for a stay in my mountaineering club's hut and, for the purposes of testing, in my own bed!

Let's start with it as a jacket, which I imagine is how the majority of folk will get the most use out of it. First things first, I found the Slumber Jacket to be wonderfully comfortable and a great option for everything from winter beach days and casual dog walks to touring the neighborhood checking out everyone's Christmas lights.

When folded away, the extra material of the sleeping bag's foot compartment is held at the bottom of the jacket, in the back. This extra weight and bulk is admittedly noticeable when walking but not to the point where it becomes much of an issue. As a bonus, the additional material acts as a sort of cushion when sitting down.

Of course, as with all of these kinds of jackets, freedom of movement is a little restricted around the knees, making it one for strolls and ambles rather than determined power walking. I wouldn't want to be late for a meeting while wearing the Slumber Jacket! Its plush insulation makes it less suited to swim hikes than something like Finisterre's relatively light and packable Tego changing robe.

The stuff sack isn't designed to be particularly compact. There are no compression straps and the sack is generous when it comes to the amount of space for stuffing the jacketed inside. Packed down, I measured it at 37 x 25 x 20cm, which is relatively big were you wanting to put it in a backpack. This all points to a a jacket at home on car camping adventures and beach days, rather than for more dynamic pursuits. It's a luxurious product to relax in, rather than a functional piece to take with you on active adventures.

And so to its use as a sleeping bag. As mentioned earlier, I feel that the sizing isn't quite right. I'm 5 foot 8 inches tall and always a small when it comes to jackets. Indeed, as a jacket, the Slumber fits me very well. However, when transformed into a sleeping bag it all feels a bit tight. Its lack of length meant my toes were right up against the fabric of the footbed, which created a claustrophobic feeling tension throughout. This was exacerbated if I put the hood on too.

I'd say go a size up, but then you might end up with a sleeping bag that's more comfortable but a jacket that's too big. This is my main gripe with this otherwise great piece of kit as, all in all, it's a great, premium feeling jacket for relaxed time in the great outdoors. It's just a shame that it's restrictive as a sleeping bag.

Whether you're hiking in winter and need an insulating layer under your hardshell or just want something to throw on when you're on belay or sitting on the deck at après, the Helly Hansen Verglas 2.0 is warm enough to protect you against the elements but light and packable enough to be versatile.

With 700 fill power responsibly sourced down, this jacket provides enough heat to be worn as an outer layer or mid layer, depending on the season and conditions. Helly Hansen Verglas Down Jacket 2.0: in the field

I've been testing the women's Verglas 2.0 in cactus and this down jacket has quickly become my go-to insulating layer this winter. I've worn it as a mid layer on cold, snowy winter hikes in Scotland, brought it along as my outer layer for après during a few days skiing in Chamonix and have honestly worn it around the house quite a bit during this long, cold season.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a small which is my usual size and I'd say it's about perfect. It's a slim-fitting jacket with plenty of room for me to wear it over a base layer, which is pretty much what I always do (though I occasionally squeeze a light fleece in there too) and it's not so puffy that I can't easily wear a waterproof over the top.

It doesn't come down really low at the back, but I'd say it's a standard length for a down jacket and I love the nice, high collar which keeps my neck warm when it's windy, which is always in Scotland.

The fabric is really soft in the places where it touches my touch skin, especially around the collar, and all in all it's just a light, cozy layer that feels good to wear.

Warmth, breathability and protection

With 700 fill power, it's warm and I feel the benefit of it as soon as I put it on. But as you may know, down jackets can be fickle if they get wet. Basically, if the down gets wet then it clumps together and doesn't do its job as well. The Verglas 2.0 is made with hydrophobic down, which means it doesn't get as clumpy and continues to insulate when wet. It's also treated with DWR for added protection.

Any time it's raining, I wear a waterproof over the top, but I still managed to test this feature about a month ago, when I was on a vigorous hike in very cold weather. I wore this jacket over a synthetic base layer and my Sasta Peski Jacket over the top. I got pretty sweaty, which you can actually see a little in the photographs I've used in this review, but I never got cold, even when I was back at the trailhead so that was a good test.

That hike was also a good way to test the breathability of this jacket. In general, down isn't always the most breathable and I often save puffers for hanging around at camp and wear fleece as a mid layer for more strenuous activities. However, I've been pretty pleased with the breathability of this jacket and would happily wear it for winter hikes and downhill skiing.

Weight, storage and other details

This isn't the lightest down jacket I've ever tested (read on to find out which is), but this one is still impressively light on the scale at under 300 grams in my size. A lot of jackets claim they stuff into their own pockets and I usually have a hard time making it happen, but this one quite easily packs away. It has a little loop so I can clip it to my backpack if I want to, and in a pinch it could even make a camping pillow, though it's not the most comfortable.

It's a fairly straightforward jacket in terms of other details, but has plenty of pockets for everything I want to stash and I really appreciate the inner zipped chest pocket where I can keep my phone close and warm or my credit card and hotel room key for après.

This isn't a technical detail, but the jacket has good eco creds too, made with sustainable down, PFC-free DWR and recycled materials, which is something I look for in my outdoor gear.

Helly Hansen Verglas Down Jacket 2.0: the bottom line

The bottom line is that this jacket is a real contender for your next go-to puffy, the one that hangs on the hook by the front door ready for whatever snow shovelling, dog walking, skiing, hiking or grocery shopping adventure life throws at you. It's light enough to layer and warm enough to make a difference, not too fragile and versatile enough for multi-use.

If you want something even lighter, even more packable and even warmer, the Montane Alpine Nano 850 is the gold standard, but be prepared to open your wallet a little wider.

Sasta Peski Jacket: first impressions 

If you've bought a waterproof jacket for hiking in the last few decades, you'll expect it to have at least two layers (a face fabric and waterproof membrane, usually Gore-Tex) and to be lightweight, sporty and swishy. The Sasta Peski Jacket is nothing like that.

Bucking the modern trend of high-performing, technical rain shells, Finnish brand Sasta has taken a considerably more old school and sustainable approach to weather protection with the Peski. Made with a single layer of Ventile cotton – that's the same stuff Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay wore on Everest – this jacket focuses on weave and construction instead of petrochemicals to shield you from the weather.

Ventile, which was developed in the 1930s to save the lives of Air Force personnel flying over the Atlantic in wartime England, is cotton that's so densely woven it blocks the wind and even keeps a light drizzle out because the yarns expand when they get wet. This jacket has added weather protection in the form of a big, adjustable peaked hood that stays put in the wind. That said, this material will not withstand a heavy rain.

If you're not worried about rain, however, one of the great benefits of choosing cotton over nylon or polyester is that it's extremely breathable, making it an excellent choice for vigorous hikes in cold weather. The two deep hand pockets hold plenty of small gear, but also double as underarm vents.

The high collar and slightly diagonal zipper make this jacket extremely stylish, and it's certainly at home around town as well as on the trail, while the low cut means more protection.

The brand has updated this jacket for sustainability by removing water repellent tapings, while Ventile fabric is now treated with Nordshield, a wood-based antimicrobial treatment that's free of heavy metals to cut down on the number of washes it needs.

At 540 grams for a women's small, it weighs considerably more than your typical rain coat, but that means no flapping in the wind. As we're accustomed to with Scandi brands, it might as well be priced by the gram.

If you need one really good waterproof jacket for hiking, this isn't it. But if you're looking for something more stylish and versatile that you can wear in the wilderness and around town without your outfit screaming "I'm a hiker!" and you don't need too much wet weather protection, boy is it stylish.

Sasta Peski Jacket: in the field 

I've tested a lot of waterproof jackets for Advnture and, while some (Montane Phase Lite) are better than others (Columbia Coral Ridge ODX), they're all ultimately pretty similar in terms of construction. This jacket is a whole different story, and I've been wearing the women's version for several months now – up mountains, along forested and coastal trails and in the city.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit 

I tested a European 36, which is essentially a small, otherwise known as my usual size. It's not baggy, but it has enough room that I can layer it over a light down jacket and comes down beneath my hips for good coverage. Compared to my other waterproof jackets, the cut is really more stylish and flattering, and that's in part down to the off-center and slightly diagonal front zip, but also the high collar and large hood.

Weatherproofing and breathability 

I should say that even though I'm testing this in the category of "waterproof jackets," the brand is careful to call it "weatherproof," which is more accurate. It doesn't have a waterproof membrane such as Gore-Tex or Petrichor, but instead relies on the weave of the cotton to keep out moisture and wind. Does it work?

The first time I wore it up a mountain, it was cold with a blustery mix of drizzle and light snow. I was so unsure that this jacket would provide enough protection that I'd packed my Arc'teryx Beta LT jacket as a backup. However, I never needed it, and while the rain doesn't actually bead on the fabric like it would if it were treated with DWR, it does stay out.

That said, I more recently got caught out around town in a heavier, more sustained rain and this jacket did indeed soak through, so it's really not built for that type of weather and I wouldn't bring it if I were expecting a lot of rain on a hike. I will say that one bonus point for the lack of membrane means it's not swishy, so I can enjoy a quieter hike in it.

The high collar and excellent hood provide great protection from the elements, and once I've zipped up and cinched the hood, it stays put even in a howling gale and just a small section of my face is exposed.

So it really shines in windproofing, but also in breathability. That mountain I mentioned is quite steep over about the first two miles, and it's rare that I don't have to strip down, even in cold weather. I wore this jacket over a down jacket and a synthetic top and never had to remove a layer. That's good old cotton for you.

Weight and storage

I probably shouldn't have to say that this is heavier than my synthetic waterproofs, by quite a big margin, but that said, I wouldn't classify it as heavy. It's still a single layer of fabric so it's not super bulky, but bigger than you'd want if you were carrying it in your daypack. While it doesn't stuff down as small as its peers, I can comfortably wear it all day, so if the weather is cool or cold, I wouldn't think twice about wearing it.

There are only two pockets on this jacket, and they're big, zipped hand pockets. They're plenty for any small gear I want to have to hand (basically, my phone and gloves) though I always like a chest pocket, but what I really like is that they're mesh-lined so they can double as vents.

Durability and value

Like a lot of gear from Scandi brands, the Peski is pricey, and great quality. It's so expensive that it's hard to imagine anyone buying this as their sole waterproof jacket, unless they live somewhere where rain really isn't an issue. But then again, if you want a jacket you can wear around town that looks good and provides decent weather protection and you have money to burn? It isn't the worst idea.

It's a beautifully high-quality jacket, with pristine construction and a thoughtful design. Again, what you'd expect from a Scandi brand. I'd be very surprised if I'm not still wearing this in 20 years and today, it still looks new despite me battling my way through a few blackberry bushes in it.

Saska Peski Jacket: the bottom line 

The Sasta Peski is a beautiful, if non-technical, jacket that can be worn for hiking if you're realistic about where you're going, and what conditions you might expect. It's versatile, high quality and breathable.

On the flip side, it's expensive, heavy and not waterproof, so if what you seek is something that can keep out a deluge and not weight you down, something like the Verglas Infinity Shell from fellow Scandi brand Helly Hansen might be a better bet.

In 1964, Ford launched the Mustang, the Beatles released A Hard Day’s Night, a Chinese team claimed the first ascent of Shishapangma and French mountain brand Cimalp was founded. Much has changed in the intervening six decades, but Ford still sells the Mustang, the Beatles are perennially popular, people still want to climb Shishapangma and Cimalp is still selling mountain gear.

Yes, Cimalp recently celebrated turning 60 and, to mark the occasion, it released its Heritage Collection. It's taken some of its most iconic garments, given them 60s-inspired colorways and added an attractive original logo patch. The patch displays the founding year, as well as a leaf – a nod to the brand’s sustainability efforts. There’s plenty going on in this space: in spring 2025, Cimalp is upgrading to an "energy self-sufficient" head office, while it’s also keeping in step with the likes of Rab and Patagonia by introducing La Réparerie, a repair workshop with the intention of keeping garments in play and out of landfill.

Named after the iconic arête on Mont Blanc’s Aiguille du Midi, the Cosmiques is a waterproof jacket that features the proprietary, PFC-free Ultrashell membrane, which Cimalp name as their most important innovation. The brand is renowned for only using its own fabrics and technologies, shunning the likes of Gore-Tex and Polartec. This helps it to control costs, as well as keeping hold of the reins when it comes to its impact of the environment.

I was delighted to receive the Heritage version of the Cosmiques to see how it would fare in the British backcountry.

First impressions

The limited-edition, navy-blue Heritage colorway of the Cimalp Cosmiques H jacket is definitely attractive. Cimalp says that the Heritage Collection pays tribute to the colors that have defined the brand. Its dark blues and reds are very French, very allez! I love it. I could well imagine Kilian Mbappé striding into a stadium wearing it. The women’s version is also attractive and continues the theme, boasting three shades of blue, with deep navy around the hood and shoulders. The non-Heritage version of the jacket is also available in twin shades of green, blue, brown and black for men, and pink, green and black for women.

First wear reveals it to be less stiff than many waterproof jackets. It’s comfortable and moves with the body – always a good start. It's true to size and has a more athletic fit than most. Nevertheless, there’s still space for fleece and down layers beneath. The term fully featured gets bandied about a lot when talking about outdoor gear but the Cosmiques certainly fits the bill with five zippered pockets, pit zips, and adjustability in the cuffs, hem and hood. Versatility was evident from the off – I could imagine wearing the Cosmiques for everything from adventurous trail running to mountaineering.

Proprietary Ultrashell fabric

The Cosmiques features the same Ultrashell waterproof membrane as the Storm Pro Trail Running Jacket that I reviewed last year. For me, this relatively robust membrane is more at home on a hiking or mountaineering jacket than it is on a running jacket. Regardless of use, it’s a proven winner in the sort of serious conditions encountered in the mountains when it comes to repelling wind and precipitation while maintaining breathability.

The 3-layer ripstop fabric boasts a hydrostatic head rating of 20,000mm. This is around about the level of waterproof protection you’d expect for a trekking jacket but not quite as rugged as a mountaineering jacket boasting Gore-Tex Pro or similar – though these tend to be heavier and more restrictive. When it comes to breathability, Ultrashell is rated at 80,000 MVP – no, not ‘Most Valuable Player’ but ‘Moisture Vapor Permeability’. This is an impressive stat and I was intrigued to see if its performance would live up to the numbers.

Features

There’s no shortage of pockets here, with four zippered compartments on the front alone, as well as one hidden in the interior. The two chest pockets are positioned to be accessible when wearing a climbing harness, though the two lower handwarmers will thus be out of action in climbing situations or when covered by a daypack's hipbelt. They're great for walks in the park though.

To let off steam when moving quickly or working hard in ascent, there are pit zips that allow you to dump heat, while the 2-way front zip can also be opened up if working up a sweat. There’s no storm guard on the exterior to shield the front zipper, a feature present in many winter waterproofs to provide an additional barrier against extreme conditions. However, the zipper is laminated and there’s a length of fabric beneath, providing reinforcement for this potential chink in the armor.

The helmet compatible hood is 3-way adjustable, with the usual two points of adjustment at the front and one at the rear. Its peak is moldable, allowing you to shape it to best cope with the prevailing conditions – a nice touch. The cuffs are shaped to provide maximum coverage and can be tightened using the Velcro tab.

On the trails

I tested the Cosmiques through the winter season, both on local walks around England’s southwest and on adventures in Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park. The latter gave me the opportunity to put the jacket through its paces in extreme conditions and a variety of situations: from soaking wet and wild trail runs to mountaineering days in Britain’s coldest mountain range.

One of my qualms when I previously tested Cimalp’s Storm Pro Jacket was that it was a little bit restrictive in terms of arm movement. The Cosmiques doesn’t suffer from this in the slightest. It’s designed with an ergonomic cut, allowing freedom of movement when climbing, coiling rope or dancing about in celebration when you reach the summit. I was pleased to find that the design is effective. I had no issues with restricted movement, whether I was scrambling, hiking or running.

It's marketed as a trekking jacket and it fits this brief with aplomb. It’s protective, functional, breathable and relatively light compared to many waterproofs. However, for me, its uses go way beyond trekking. It was an obvious choice when my climbing buddies and I were faced with the kind of wet, warm and windy conditions that make trail running a superior option than mountaineering (not to mention a safer one too).

For a long, committing backcountry run in challenging conditions, the jacket’s freedom of movement and protective shield made it a good choice – I’d sooner wear it than most running jackets on these kind of days. Faced with 50mph headwinds, the tightened hood stayed in place. Faced with volley after volley of liquid sunshine, the Ultrashell membrane held firm. Faced with a sweaty 39-year-old pushing through it all, the jacket’s breathability remained impressive.

At the other end of the spectrum, it also performed very well as a mountaineering jacket, coping with Scotland’s most frigid mountains in February. With windchill at around -8°C (17°F) on the high plateau, it kept me perfectly warm when deployed on top of a Merino base layer and Cimalp’s Whymper Technical Fleece Jacket – yes, the brand have named a fleece after one of Britain’s greatest mountaineers. All of its zip pulls and adjustment points are easy to manipulate wearing thick winter gloves too.

On the trails, it's a jacket you don’t notice you’re wearing. I mean that in the best possible way. It’s light, moves with you, keeps the wind off, fends off the rain and is easy to get on with. If you were only to own one jacket, I’d say there are few that better fit the bill than this. It’s not as featherweight as some, while others are more rugged, but for sheer versatility, the Cosmiques hits the bullseye.

Helly Hansen Odin Everdown hooded jacket: first impressions

As a journalist in the outdoor industry, I’m constantly testing products that promise to change the game. And as much as this is a dream job, it has had the rather unfortunate effect of turning me into a bit of a sceptic, because so very few products tend to deliver on these claims. Occasionally, however, something properly novel comes down the pipeline that blows me away – as was the case with the phenomenal Zenbivy Ultralight Bed last year. And now, to kick off 2025, Helly Hansen have managed to do it with the Odin Everdown jacket.

In a nutshell, the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown down jacket is a warm outer layer for chilly mountaineering, backpacking or wild camping trips. Which, in itself, is nothing revelatory – that’s what a down jacket’s supposed to be. Where the Odin Everdown properly breaks the mold is in delivering heavyweight warmth in a package that’s literally as light as a sheet of feathers.

Seriously, in medium, this weighs a jaw-dropping 313g. To put that in perspective, that’s lighter than a single can of Coke – or less than half the weight of the similarly warm Mountain Equipment Lightline (which comes in at 790g). This is thanks to Helly Hansen’s use of THINDOWN, an insulator that combines the utility of synthetic insulation with the weight and packability of down. Pitched as “the world’s first real down fabric”, THINDOWN is more akin to polyester insulation than it is to down feathers, comprising 100% stitched down that’s molded into panels. The result is a natural insulator that’s twice as warm as loose down and four times warmer than polyester – allowing Helly Hansen to make a jacket that’s incredibly light and packable for its warmth – and winning the brand a coveted ISPO Award in 2023.

All of this game-changing tech does come at a cost, though. The Helly Hansen Odin Everdown jacket will set you back a hefty £400 when bought directly from Helly Hansen. This is £75 more than the RRP of a Rab Neutrino Pro and £140 more than the RRP of the aforementioned Mountain Equipment Lightline – two jackets that, in my experience, offer a comparable level of warmth.

If you’re looking for something with an equivalent weight, your main option is going to be something like the Ghost Whisperer 2 from Mountain Hardwear, which has an RRP of around £300 and weighs a teeny tiny 246g. In my experience, though, Mountain Hardwear’s prized design doesn’t even come close to delivering comparable levels of warmth to the Everdown, with the Ghost Whisperer being more of a spring/summer/fall layer compared to the Everdown’s ability to keep you warm in temperatures well below zero. All of this hopefully illuminates why I think this jacket is actually well priced for what it delivers, which is something I never thought I’d write about a £400 coat.

Helly Hansen Odin Everdown hooded jacket: in the wild

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a sample of Helly Hansen’s Odin Everdown jacket back at the start of November 2024. It arrived just in time for some seriously cold weather, which meant I could properly put the warmth claims of this coat to the test. In total, I used it on an untold number of cold winter walks around my home near the Chiltern Hills in England; on a skiing trip in the Alps where it became my go-to jacket for practically everything; for a deep winter wild camp on Dartmoor in south-west England where the temperature dropped down to around 21°F (-6°C) Celsius; and for keeping me toasty warm on a few wanders in Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) in Wales – including a hike up Pen y Fan in rare snowy conditions. And all in, it left me nothing but impressed.

Helly Hansen Odin Everdown hooded jacket: fit and features

The first thing I really appreciated about the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown jacket was the fit. It’s tight enough to lock in warmth, yet baggy enough that you can comfortably layer up underneath. It’s also comfortable under both a pack or a hardshell, with no surplus toggles, zips or pockets that dig into you while you walk. For added warmth, the back of the jacket comes down a little to fully cover your waist and to provide some extra protection to the tops of your butt cheeks. What’s more, the cut of the wrist cuffs is such that the internal down panelling drops down a little over your hands which, in my opinion, makes the coat noticeably warmer around the wrists.

When it comes to features, though, I was initially underwhelmed with the Odin Everdown’s offerings. It comes with two hip pockets, one central zip, a hood, a RECCO reflector and a stuff pouch. And that’s it. There are no zippers on the pockets and there’s no internal stuff pocket. There aren’t even toggles on the hood to tighten it down in high winds, nor are there cuffs on the wrists. It’s the most simplistic jacket I’ve ever come across, which I came to appreciate the more I wore it – even if I was a little surprised at first.

You see, Helly Hansen have worked to create the lightest, warmest jacket out there; a layer that delivers more warmth per gram than any other on the market. And even though I’ve not tested every down jacket available today, I’ve yet to come across something that even comes close. And you know what? I never zip up pockets or use those stuff pockets anyway.

Helly Hansen Odin Everdown hooded jacket: THINDOWN

While we’re on the subject of features, it’s worth doing a deep dive into the biggest ‘feature’ of this coat: the THINDOWN insulation that makes it what it is.

This is a layer of RDS-certified goose down that’s touted as “the world’s first real down fabric”. Coming in rolls, the insulation is more akin to polyester than standard down feathers, an invention which has allowed Helly Hansen to make a down jacket that’s completely void of baffles. This pretty much eradicates any and all wind from entering your jacket and cooling you down, allowing the Odin Everdown to work well as a windbreaker as well as an insulating layer.

What’s more, thanks to the panel-like insulation, Helly Hansen have been able to evenly disperse the down throughout the coat, which eradicates cold spots and ensures more consistent insulation. In my experience, this has the added benefit of the jacket warming up immediately, practically at the point you first put it on (unlike in conventional down jackets where it can take a while for the feathers to catch your body heat and warm up).

All of which makes the Odin Everdown just as warm as any classic belay jacket you might use on a wild camp. For comparison's sake, I actually headed out on a hike in temperatures hovering around 27°F (-3°C) wearing just the Odin Everdown over a thin Icebreaker Merino base layer and I felt perfectly comfortable the whole time.

Around halfway I then swapped jackets and peeled on my Mountain Equipment Lightline – a beloved coat among winter wild campers and backpackers that’s about twice the size and weight of the Everdown. And, again, I was comfortable – not warmer, not sweatier: I was just as warm and comfortable as I was in the Everdown, despite the Lightline being more than twice as big and twice as heavy.

Now, granted, this wasn’t exactly a scientific analysis, but my experience with the Everdown over the last three months has given me just as much confidence in its ability to keep me warm as I’ve built up in the Mountain Equipment Lightline over the years. So much so, in fact, that I can’t think of a reason I’d ever opt for the heavier Lightline again, with the Odin Everdown now poised to become my go-to warm layer on winter wild camping and backpacking trips from here on.

When it comes to packability, this is another way in which the Odin Everdown really stands out from the crowd. In medium, this jacket packs down smaller than a Patagonia Nano Puff, a three-season stand-out mid layer that’s long been praised for its size and weight. When fully compressed, the Odin gets down to about the size of a mango, which is jaw-dropping for a coat that delivers as much warmth as it does.

To sweeten the deal even more, it also weighs a barely noticeable 313g. At this weight, it’s kinda pointless opting for anything else – even if you’re heading out on a hike in warmer conditions where you probably won’t need anything this warm. Hell, at 313g, you could also incorporate the Everdown into your fastpacking or bikepacking setup, which (to me), makes it one of the most versatile warm layers available.

As is the case with most jackets in this category, the Everdown is not waterproof. The nylon outer is reasonably water repellent to the odd droplet, but I found it quickly wets out in any real rain. Therefore, if you’re heading into wet environments, it’s crucial that you pair this with a shell or keep it in your pack until the weather dries out.

For a jacket this light and packable, I found the Odin Everdown to be reasonably durable. Featuring a 10-denier ripstop Nylon outer shell, it’s tough enough for day-to-day use and for wear in the mountains, although you wouldn’t want to wear it while bushwhacking. A rogue thorn or a misplaced bit of barbed wire will easily put a hole in the Odin Everdown, so consider pairing it with a hardshell if you’re walking through dense woodland or wearing it anywhere it could get snagged. Unlike regular down jackets, though, the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown comes with THINDOWN panelling, so feathers won’t spew out of this coat should you rip it. Much like with polyester insulation, the jacket is still perfectly capable of keeping you warm even if a small hole develops (although I, thankfully, haven’t been able to test this claim, yet).

In a nutshell, I love the Helly Hansen Odin Everdown. It’s the lightest and most packable down jacket I’ve ever come across, delivering levels of warmth that rival coats twice its size. It promises next-level warmth to weight, and in my experience, it delivers exactly that. Honestly, I think this is the new benchmark when it comes to warm winter down jackets for backpacking, mountaineering and wild camping. And because it ticks so many boxes I fully expect the Everdown to become the only jacket I ever pack from here on out whenever it’s set to get a little chilly – whether I’m going fastpacking or bikepacking in milder spring temperatures or heading out on a deep winter wild camp. Granted, at $450/£400 this coat isn’t cheap, but for the amount of use you’ll be able to get out of it, I think it’s a worthy investment if you can comfortably afford it.
