Compared to some heritage hiking brands, at just 22 years old, Keen is just a baby. But in that time, it's managed to make quite a mark on the world of hiking footwear and establish itself as a maker of reliable hiking boots, shoes and sandals from the Targhee IV to the Newport H2. Now it's taking its winning formula and applying it to shoes purpose-built for faster adventures.

The Keen Seek, available on July 25, is the first trail running shoe from the Portland-based brand, and according to Keen, it's been two years in the making.

Years in the making

Because Keen is best known for hiking footwear, the development team started the process of designing a trail shoe by conducting in-depth interviews with runners to learn more about what they look for in a trail running shoe.

Next up, they started working with a team of testers around the US, which the brand says helped "fine-tune the geometry and design" through multiple prototypes. This saw one of the lead developers at Keen run 900 miles in 2024, trying out various prototypes.

The whole process took around two years, and now, Keen believes it has a winning formula in the Seek.

Meet the Keen Seek

The resulting trail shoe is built with a roomy toe box to help your toes splay naturally, while a pre-molded TPU heel counter and lockdown-knit fit hold your foot snugly in place. A breathable textile upper is designed for warm weather, and a padded tongue and stretchy knit collar provide comfort over longer days.

Underfoot, you're looking at a modest 6mm drop and a durable QuantumFoam midsole that Keens says delivers a responsive, comfortable, and stable ride. The men's model has a massive 38.5mm of foam under the heel, while the women's version boasts 36mm. Either way, this looks built for well-packed and gravel trails.

If you do encounter crumbly or slick conditions, 4mm rubber lugs that are rated by Heeluxe to last 925 miles until worn smooth help you keep your footing.

There are some other nice perks too, such as a lace garage, reflective laces for safety, and an Eco Anti-Odor treatment to cut down on stinky shoes, made with natural probiotics that are reportedly safe for the environment.

All of this comes in at a relatively light (if not superlight) 10.9oz (men’s) / 8.75oz (women’s).

The Keen Seek will be available on July 25 in men’s and women’s sizing and in multiple colorways from Keen. In line with the brand's announcement that it would not raise prices to cover tariffs, is priced at a reasonable $185. It will be released in the UK in September.

Leading outdoor footwear brand Keen has announced it will not implement any tariff-related price hikes on its hiking boots and shoes for 2025.

The announcement follows one from Black Diamond last week stating it intends to implement price increases of up to 25% on climbing and hiking gear due to the tariffs imposed by the current administration.

In an official letter to brand partners dated May 6, Keen CEO Rory Fuerst writes: “We believe it’s important to support our retail partners and fans through this period of uncertainty. By holding our prices steady, we aim to help you maintain strong consumer relationships.”

Unlike Black Diamond, whose production operates using 41 factories in 17 countries, making it vulnerable to the effects of the tariffs, Keen owns its manufacturing facilities, including one factory in the USA, which it explains allows it to adapt to the shifting economic climate.

Despite that competitive advantage, Fuerst admits: “We recognize that this is not a simple or easy choice in today’s climate – but it’s the right one.”

In our recent article on how the tariffs might affect the price and production of outdoor gear, we explain that much of the manufacturing of gear from our favourite brands takes place in Asia in countries such as China, which is facing a 125% tariff, and in Cambodia and Vietnam, both originally threatened with 49% tariffs.

For brands such as Black Diamond and Columbia Sportswear, whose share prices have dropped as a result of these tariff increases, the higher tariffs raise their cost base, which makes it harder to maintain profit margins.

Keen Hightrail EXP: first impressions

These hiking shoes, the latest low-cut offering from outdoor specialists Keen, aim to balance speed, stability and style in a versatile, lightweight package.

The all-new Hightrail EXP hiking shoes pack the features of a protective, heavy-duty hiking model into a shoe that could easily be mistaken for a trainer. They’re made from sturdy ripstop materials and breathable premium leather, which is kept dry by Keen’s own waterproof membrane.

Comfort-wise, the Hightail EXP features removable foam insoles and high-rebound foam cushioning, so you can enjoy a cozy, pain-free hike.

Keen Hightrail EXP: in the wilderness

For the past couple of months, I’ve been putting Keen’s all-new hiking shoes through their paces in Britain’s harsh winter weather. I’ve worn the Hightrail EXPs in the damp and boggy English hills and rocky pathways of Wales’s Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) national park.

Here’s how they performed:

Fit and comfort

From my first use, the Hightrail EXP stood out as remarkably comfortable. Upon stepping into these hiking shoes, your feet are greeted by the absorbent foam insoles. These thick, bouncy insoles pad the soles of your feet, cushioning them from any uneven terrain you may encounter.

The bridge and toes of your feet are supported by high-rebound foam cushioning, which wraps around them to provide a soft, slipper-like feeling on the trails.

The comfy cushioning was apparent whether I was ascending steep, rocky sections or negotiating thick mud, keeping my feet supported and pain-free over many miles of trekking.

These hiking shoes also fit very well. True to size, the Hightrail EXP slipped on with ease and hugged my heels to keep me firmly in place without ever feeling too tight.

The Hightrail experience was further improved by a generous, wide toe-box.

Crafting a narrow toe-box is one of the worst mistakes footwear manufacturers can make, and can often ruin a perfectly good trek. These flexible hiking shoes don’t suffer from such a problem and allowed my toes plenty of freedom.

Weight

Despite ample cushioning and several supportive features, the Hightrail EXP hiking shoes are a decent weight.

At just 13.8oz (390g) per shoe, they weigh in at a similar point to other lightweight hiking shoes. The Salomon Outpulse, for example, which we rated as our favorite lightweight hiking shoes, weigh 13oz (377g).

The Hightrail EXP's lack of bulk is noticeable in the backcountry, allowing you to trot along at speed without worrying about the weight.

Traction

Despite their minimal weight and casual design, the Hightrail EXP is more than capable of keeping you upright on harsh, uneven terrain.

The multi-directional lugs on the all-terrain rubber outsole dug into all manner of surfaces, stopping me from slipping in the mud and providing assured grip on steep, rocky pathways.

The outsole is also flexible, providing a feeling of freedom on the trails without sacrificing grip. For this reason, the Hightrail EXP can easily double as trail running shoes and don't feel out of place on a run.

Protection from the elements

To protect against the elements, these hybrid hiking shoes feature a PFAS-free waterproof membrane, which aims to allow vapor in while keeping your feet dry.

I put said membrane to the test on plenty of rainy days and even in the odd puddle.

The waterproofing passed with flying colors; my pair was submerged to the laces at several points during testing and kept my socks completely dry throughout.

As these are a low-cut pair, water occasionally snuck in near my ankles but didn't travel far, thanks to the Hightrail EXP's snug fit.

Breathability is perhaps the only area these hiking shoes don't ace. My feet felt fine for the most part but became a touch hot and bothered towards the ends of two long hikes.

While the breathability is passable, it doesn't quite reach the high standards that this pair sets itself.

A defensive rubber toe bumper also aims to fend off the elements, protecting the front of your feet from rocks and debris on the trail.

While it obviously doesn't offer the same protection as a steel cap, the rubber option is fine for most trails and successfully fends off annoying trail debris.

Price

At $150 / £125, the Hightrail EXP hiking shoes are comparable to other top-end lightweight hiking shoes like the Salewa Dropline and Salomon Pulse hiking shoes.

There are certainly cheaper models available, but for their excellent waterproofing, superb grip, and slipper-like comfort, I'd say the Hightrail EXPs are worth every cent.

Keen Howser Slide: first impressions

Finding a good pair of slippers to wear around around the camp can be a tough ask. As well as providing comfort and warmth, the right pair should be able to withstand unpredictable country terrain.

Keen claims its latest effort, the Howser Slides, hit the sweet spot, blending comfort and durability to provide a cozy experience around the camp and in the wilderness.

Designed with comfort in mind, the slip-on Howser Slides boast a fleece inner lining to cushion your feet and insulate from the outdoors. A sizeable toe box allows plenty of room for your forefoot while a simple bungee lock system tightens and loosens the slippers to your liking.

For the past few months, I've been putting Keen’s premier camping slippers to the test. I've worn the Howser Slides outdoors in chilly temperatures, and over all manner of terrain to see how this premium pair fares.

Fit and comfort

There’s little worse than an uncomfortable pair of camping slippers. Ill-fitting, lacking support, or just generally painful, uncomfortable camping slippers can be a chore to wear, inducing thoughts of the indoors.

Thankfully, this was not the case with the Howser Slides.

Whether relaxing outdoors or strolling around the countryside, I found these luxury camping slippers to be exceedingly comfortable.

True to size, this pair fit exceptionally well. Slipping on with ease, the polyester body hugged my heels to keep me firmly in place without ever feeling too tight, while a generous toe box accommodated my wide feet with plenty of breathing room.

Inside the slides, a soft fleece inner lining cushioned the bridge and toes of my feet while an abrasive polyurethane insole supported the arch and heel.

Polyurethane insoles are often used in hiking and running shoes thanks to their effective cushioning and abrasion resistance. This was apparent in the Howser Slides, which proved consistently comfortable over fields, roads and steep rocky paths.

Ease of use

Although they’re a touch heavier than standard indoor slippers, the Howser Slides can still be considered lightweight camping gear. Weighing roughly 9.5oz/ 269g, they’re easily light enough to chuck in a backpack without adding much additional heft.

The bungee lock system is simple and effective, tightening your slides with the simple pull of a cord, which brings the collar together.

I rarely used the lock system in testing due to how well the Howser Slides fit. When I did, it provided a touch more stability, further securing my feet.

Taking on the elements

In addition to providing a snug and comfortable wearing experience, a good pair of camping slippers must be able to thrive on the adverse terrain you’re likely to encounter around the camp.

Keen meets this challenge head-on, with a sizeable recycled P.E.T plastic outsole, which wraps around each slipper's sides and front to shield the polyester body from damp grass and muddy fields.

For the most part, this protective outsole was very effective. Although it picked up the odd blade of grass, mud rarely made it onto the soft polyester body, which remained dry in damp grass.

Designed for walking around the camp, the outsole doesn’t feature lugs or any stability-enhancing tech. While this made slippery terrain a little trickier to navigate, the flat, flexible outsole picked up very little mud, so could easily be washed or worn inside.

The polyester body is not waterproof or water-resistant, so offers little protection from rainfall. This is a design decision rather than any defect with the product, however several camping slippers at a similar price offer far more protection from the rain.

Insulation

Tested in the daytime and at night, in temperatures ranging from freezing to 50°F / 10°C, the Howser Slides kept my feet consistently warm. Alongside their polyester body and cozy fleece lining, these slippers can keep warmth from escaping and cold wind from coming in with their adjustable bungee lock.

Price

At $79 / £65, the Keen Howser Slides are a high-end option for shuffling around the camp, comparable to top-of-the-range slippers like the ThermoBall Winter Mules from The North Face.

While they perform excellently in several areas, Keen's flagship camping slippers would be improved with the water-repellent outers of their competitors.

There was a time when I shunned the suggestion of wild swimming and even the thought of open-water swimming in winter made me shiver and zip up my down jacket. Then I moved to the Scottish Highlands and discovered a beautiful and peaceful loch almost on my doorstep. It would have been rude not to try the increasingly popular activity of outdoor swimming, right?

I started in the summer and carefully (and safely) built up my resilience in cold water over many months until I could happily take a dip – and then a swim. I kept swimming into the autumn and, when winter arrived, I was surprised to find that I was keen to keep on dipping even when there was ice on the water. Whatever the season, I am always cautious when getting into open water. However, in the coldest months I am even more safety conscious. Suddenly jumping into very cold water can be dangerous, if not fatal, especially if you are not acclimatised to outdoor swimming.

I also adjust my wild swimming gear to suit the weather, conditions and air and water temperatures.

The benefits of wild swimming

Perhaps you're wondering why I bother swimming when winter comes. Surely it's much too cold to be enjoyable, you might be thinking. But the benefits of open water swimming are numerous, including boosted mental well-being.

In fact, a study published in the British Medical Journal suggests open water swimming may be effective for managing symptoms of depression. I always feel a huge mental lift after a wild swim, even if I am in the water for a very short time.

There are said to be physical advantages, too, and research in the European Journal of Applied Physiology concluded cold water immersion can reduce heart rate and blood pressure and increase the feel-good neurotransmitter, dopamine.

Another article in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health showed cold water swimming can improve immune and cardiovascular health, although this is more likely to be limited to people without existing health conditions.

So, you see, there are plenty of reasons for considering the big, bold pursuit of winter wild swimming.

To continue swimming in open water in the winter here are some of my kit considerations.

A water thermometer

I like to know what the water temperature will be before I submerge myself. I use a water thermometer so I can prepare myself for the cold.

A swimming wetsuit

In the summer, I prefer to swim in open water in a swimsuit. My preferred type of wild swimming is a short swim or “dip”. I don’t feel the need for a wetsuit for warmth when the water temperature is higher.

However, in winter, when the water temperature drops closer to zero, I do wear a wetsuit. It might be a shortie style wetsuit with long-sleeves but shorter legs or, for longer swims, I’ll choose to put on a full-length wetsuit. Some swimmer prefer a wetsuit jacket.

Not only is it more pleasant to wear a wetsuit in cold water in winter but it is also a safety measure. While some swimmers can cope with very cold water in only their swimsuit, I find I am unable to maintain my core body temperature for more than a minute or so.

Wetsuit socks and gloves

I wear wetsuit socks all year round but in winter they are essential. Wetsuit socks, which are always part of my wild swimming gear list, are good for keeping feet warmer and also for protecting the soles of the feet from rocks and stones as I enter the water.

When the water gets colder, I also use neoprene gloves. I suffer with Raynaud’s syndrome and that means that I need the insulating layer of wetsuit gloves to be able to swim.

A beanie hat

In winter, I prefer to keep my head above the water when wild swimming. I also like to maintain as much body heat as possible and this means a wetsuit hat, a beanie hat or a bobble hat are important items of kit.

A swimming buddy

I sometimes swim solo in summer when the water and air temperatures are higher. I won’t stray too far from the shore in case I get into difficulty in the water. However, in winter I always swim with at least one other person.

Cold water has a number of dangers, such as the potential for cold water shock and muscle cramps, so it’s a good idea to swim with someone else nearby in case of an emergency.

Swim float

A swim float – or tow float – is another part of my essential wild swimming kit list. Although they are not designed to be buoyancy aids, If you get into difficulty in the water, you can use it to help you float. They are usually brightly coloured, too, so you will be more easily seen in the water if you do get into trouble, or a friend there to 'spot' for you.

Insulated swim robe

In the summer, I might use only a towel for drying myself after an outdoor swim. I may take a lightweight insulated jacket and a pair of gloves – the sort of gloves I wear for running – for warmth after being in the cold water.

In winter, I need a lot more post-swim warmth and so I always wear or pack one of the best changing robes. Getting out of the water and staying warm while you dry yourself can be a challenge when the air temperature is low. An insulated swim robe will make a big difference to your comfort levels. Warm clothing

I need a lot more clothing and especially warmer layers after cold water swimming in winter. The aim is to try to keep my core body temperature up with good quality baselayers, mid layers and a down jacket. I also take highly insulated winter gloves, a dry and warm hat and hiking socks and walking boots.

I get changed and dried as quickly as I can and then pile on the layers and add my changing robe on top.

Hot water bottle

I take a filled hot water bottle with my to my favourite wild swimming spot. I have a hot water bottle that I can pop into a large pocket of my swim robe. This is a great winter warmer after cold water swimming,

Hot drink and food

Another update to my wild swimming kit for winter is a hiking flask of hot drink. If I am warm inside, I’ll feel warmer overall.

I am usually hungry after a swim or dip, even if it’s a short one, so I pack a snack, too, which is good for keeping my energy and warmth up.

Larger backpack

With all the extra kit to carry, as well as a flask and food, I need a larger backpack in the winter for wild swimming. I'll usually take a 35l or 40l hiking pack for my winter swimming gear.

Keen Drift Creek H2: first impressions

Keen are the masters of making good, properly protective sandals for use on the trails and in the waves, and having used multiple models of the American brand’s footwear in the past – from hiking boots and walking shoes through to kayaking clogs – my expectations for the Keen Drift Creek H2s were pretty high. 

Once I got my hands (sorry, feet) on them, I quickly realized that – as with many Keen products (and as heavily hinted at in the name) – the Drift Creek H2s naturally work both as hiking sandals for walks and treks in the summer months, and also as water shoes, for use on the beach and on rock-hopping coastal adventures, plus kayaking and standup paddling escapades. 

Keen Drift Creek H2: design and materials

The Keen Drift Creek H2 has a classic hiking sandal design – a look that was pretty much pioneered by Keen (along with Teva, to be fair) – with a substantial strappy upper that can be quickly and securely tightened with a bungee to provide good support, and a really good, grippy outsole (made with KEEN.FUSION rubber) that provides traction on even the most slippery, seaweed-covered rocks. 

As always with Keen shoes, they also feature a highly protective toe bumper, although the buffer on these sandals is a little more lightweight and subtle than some of the chunky toecaps I’ve seen on earlier Keen hooves.

A slightly unusual feature on the Keen Drift Creek H2 is the mesh tongue that runs from the toecap to the top of the foot, where the bungee toggle fastens. This is essentially a floating tongue, and I think it’s there mainly to protect the top of your feet from sunburn.

Keen have long championed eco-conscious construction practices, and the webbing used on the upper of these sandals is constructed from a fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, which is great to see. The entire upper is waterproof, a claim that baffled me at first (how can sandals be waterproof?) until I realized it meant that the materials used are hydrophobic, so they don’t take on water and get sodden and heavy. 

As they’re generally worn without walking socks (right? seriously…), sandals – as I’m sure many people will have experienced in the past – can get a bit funky, but these ones have been impregnated with Eco Anti-Odor to help stop the stink, and they are also totally washable. 

Keen Drift Creek H2: look and feel

Not everyone is a fan of the sandals look – and I get that – but then again, not everyone has tried on a pair of Keen sandals, because this brand has pretty much redefined the genre, especially when it comes to sandals designed for outdoor pursuits and waterborne adventures.

Unlike myriad other sandals, which have a devastating ability to make anyone who dares to wear them instantly seem uncool, Keen’s Drift Creek H2s bestow most people with a proper adventurous look – you instantly feel like you’re some sort of rafting guide on the Colorado when you put them on. They’re comfortable too, with a highly supportive midsole that supports your foot on and off the water.

Keen Drift Creek H2: performance

I’ve been wearing the Keen Drift Creek H2 sandals for a variety of paddling, sea rowing, SUPing and shore-based coastal adventures over the summer, and it’s hard not to love them. They cradle your foot brilliantly, protect your toes from stubbing injuries during put-ins and take-outs, and the outsoles deliver all the underfoot protection and traction you could ask for. 

Of course, they’re not perfect. The mesh tongue keeps some sand, grit and small pebbles out, but a degree of debris can and will get into these sandals in certain conditions, which can be uncomfortable. The open-heel design can leave the back of your feet exposed and open to rubbing on the deck of the boat (depending on your paddling position). And they’re not going to cut the mustard when it comes to keeping your feet warm during winter paddles.

But, overall, when it comes to balancing breathability, functionality, protection and style, Keen Drift Creek H2 sandals are really top performers.

  Keen Hyperport H2: first impressions

Having recently had a good experience with the Keen Targhee IV hiking boots, I was keen (sorry) to try the brand's new water/beach shoes, as my favorite outdoor pursuits are mainly water-based. The Hyperport H2 is a revamped, lighter version of the Keen Newport H2 shandal, with more sole cushioning and a touch of extra heel protection from the poly-knit lining, to save you from scraping your ankles on rock pools, stones and shingle.

So how did the Keen Hyperport H2s measure up to the best water shoes? Here’s how they performed on test:

 Keen Hyperport H2: Grip and protection 

I first put these shoes through their paces in north Devon, hiking easy trails between beaches along the coastline, stomping across the sand in them, and wandering between rock pools. 

Previously I’ve worn more traditional hiking sandals for these kinds of adventures, but have found them not quite up to the task, due to the lack of toe protection, heel slippage, and of course the incursion of trail debris. 

By contrast, the Hyperport design, with its enclosed toe and chunky bumper, did a fine job of saving me from painful stubs. The upper is made from webbing straps, stitched onto a stretch polyester lining, with a foam inner sole that Keen says is shock-absorbing. The lining does not enclose the foot fully so there's still the risk of trail debris getting in, but the gaps in the lining are fairly small and it didn't prove to be in issue when wearing them on rocky trails.

The midsole is injected foam, which provides a lot of shock absorption and a fairly bouncy ride. Between all these elements I felt confident that my feet were well protected. The downside was I found myself wanting a little more trail feel and flex, particularly when walking over uneven boulders.

The outsoles of the Hyperports are covered in a fairly flat lug pattern with siping designed to push water away, in theory enhancing your grip. In practice this worked well, whether I was clambering over boulders on the shoreline, or picking my way around the edges of seaweed-covered rock pools. I didn’t experience any slipping, which surprised me, given the low-profile of the sole. I also found the Hyperports lived up to their quick-drying claim.

 Keen Hyperport H2: Fit and comfort 

As someone with wide feet, Keen is a brand that suits me. The wide toe box, a hallmark of Keen designs, gives me plenty of wiggle room, and also allows me to spread my toes to grip better on slick or unstable surfaces. 

The Hyperport H2s are very easy to take on and off, with plenty of stretch in the polyester upper, a heel loop for extra help if you need it (I didn’t), and a quick to use bungee fastening system. 

I wore them with socks for hiking beach trails, and then sockless on the beach. While hiking I picked up a small blister on the arch of my right foot, which was placed exactly where my foot sat over the embossed Keen logo on the inner sole. I can’t be sure that was the cause, but it was the only part of the inner sole with a different relief pattern - the rest is a kind of scale design, presumably to stop your feet from slipping around inside when they’re wet. There are three other places on the outer where the logo is stamped, so this decision to put an embossed logo inside feels a little extraneous, particularly if I’m correct that it’s what caused my blister.

 Keen Hyperport H2: Environmental impact 

As with all shoes and boots produced by Keen, the Hyperport H2s contain no forever chemicals and have been given an eco anti-odor treatment to minimize the usual smell that comes from wearing synthetic shoes. 

These shoes are also sturdily made, giving me hope that they will last many years. And buying good quality kit that doesn’t constantly need replacing is one of the easiest ways to reduce your personal impact on the environment.

 Keen Hyperport H2: Swimming and water sports

The Hyperport H2 is a fairly chunky shoe and, as such, wouldn’t usually be my first choice for long swims. Its sheer size means it creates significant extra drag in the water, and so for me this design makes more sense for casual swimming than for serious training sessions, where I’m looking to be as streamlined as possible. 

Where I think the Hyperport H2 really come into its own is on the days when you are exploring the shoreline, or searching for woodland streams to go wild swimming in. The grip provided gives a lot of confidence on stony trails, slippery rockpools or muddy paths. You also get a significant amount of protection for not a great deal of weight and can wade across a rocky seabed or riverbed without worrying about hurting your feet. 

Whether this shandal works for paddle boarding seems to me more like a question of taste rather than a clear line as to whether it's suitable or unsuitable. I’d personally want something with a lower profile like the Vivobarefoot Hydra ESC, as the chunky sole on the Hyperport makes it difficult for me to initially stand up on an unstable surface - the extra height (the heel is 45mm / 1.77in) requires more knee and ankle flex than a shoe with a flat sole. However, I have had surgeries that have left me with poor flexion in one knee. For someone without this issue I think they would still be a viable option.

 Keen Targhee IV Mid: first impressions

Keen claims the Targhee IVs are ultra durable and should be ‘the last hiking boots you ever buy’. Without testing them over an actual lifetime, it’s hard to substantiate this claim, but at first glance they absolutely do seem built to last. 

More on that later, but it’s worth noting that these boots are the latest iteration of a very popular Keen model, and therefore come loaded with a certain expectation that they are going to be a winner. So did they actually stack up on test against the best hiking boots? 

Here’s how they performed: 

 Keen Targhee IV Mid: Waterproofing and protection 

 The Targhee IVs have a proprietary waterproof inner membrane, with a leather and mesh water repellent outer. The semi-bellows tongue means that in theory water shouldn’t be able to penetrate at all below ankle height, as long as they are fitted correctly. On a recent descent from Gowbarrow Fell in the Lake District I got slightly confused as to where the trail was and ended up ankle deep in a bog several times. Given that the gloop was a hair's breadth away from coming over the top of my boot, which is a good inch above where the tongue gusset separates, I was fully expecting to feel some leakage where the tongue met the front of my ankle, but there was nothing. 

I have continued to wear the Targhee IVs in the wettest weather, and waded through plenty of puddles and streams, and they keep me dry every time. Yes, sodden leather is going to get heavy, so I don’t suggest you set out to get them soaking wet if you can avoid it. But if you are caught out by stormy conditions they shouldn’t let you down.

The classic Keen toe bumper does a lot of work shielding you from knocks and bumps and the padded tongue and cuff provide support and protect from scrapes, thorns and twigs.

Keen Targhee IV Mid: on the trails

 The Targhee IVs were comfortable almost straight out of the box. I hadn’t had time to attempt to break them in as they arrived just a few days before I was heading to the Lake District for a few days of camping and hiking, and when I first put them on they felt a tiny bit stiff. But after an hour of walking around town stocking up on supplies (and yes, I mean Kendall Mint Cake) I felt confident I could stride out in them and at the end of my first five hour hike I had zero rub points or blisters. Over time they’ve only gotten more and more comfortable.

These are not boots designed for the most extreme trails, but the 4mm multi-directional lugs on the KEEN.RUGGED proprietary outsoles did a good job of keeping me upright in a variety of conditions, including across damp rocks and boggy ground. The soles aren’t the stickiest out there though, so I’d be a little cautious bouncing over really slippery rock (try the Inov-8 Roclite 345 GTX instead). The inner and midsoles both use Keen’s Luftcell air-injected padding to protect your foot and add to the bouncy, comfortable feel of these boots.  

I did find myself wanting a bit more stiffness and protection for the ball of my foot than the Targhee IVs’ stability shank seemed to offer. When walking over spiky rocks, I definitely could feel a little discomfort through the sole as it flexed. If they were stiffer this probably wouldn’t happen, but you’d also potentially lose trail feel. It’s a case of you win some, you lose some. 

 Keen Targhee IV Mid: Fit 

The fit of these boots is one of my favourite things about them. Keen has a reputation for making some of the best hiking boots and shoes for wide feet, and that’s definitely the case here. Which means they’re not going to suit everyone. But as someone with wide-ish feet, who often finds standard fit shoes narrow and uncomfortable, the wide toe box on the Targhee IVs feels nothing short of dreamy.

Obviously these are not barefoot shoes, but the ability to spread your toes out and really flex them when you’re walking over rough ground, ascending or descending was something I really appreciated. At someone who’s had several knee surgeries it gave me more confidence in my balance than I usually have.

The Targhee IVs also have an effective heel lock system designed to keep everything firmly in place when you’re out on the trails and I found little to no heel slippage despite wearing them for hours on end over fairly challenging terrain.

 Keen Targhee IV Mid: Sustainability

Keen has been a PFAS-free brand in 2018. This means the company doesn’t use any ‘forever chemicals’ in its products. Many of the components and materials in the Targhee IVs are recycled - even the laces, and the removable inner sole has been treated with a pesticide-free odor buster. 

Keen created a process it calls KEEN.FUSION to bond the outsole and midsole of the Targhee IVs together - using heat treatment to make the bond rather than glue. The brand says this means the Targhee IVs won’t delaminate over time - that is, the outsole and midsole won’t pull apart. A quick google reveals that this was an issue for some wearers with the Targhee IIIs, and it feels like the brand has gone above and beyond to put paid to this problem. Keen is so confident of this process that it’s offering US customers a delamination guarantee, although it’s not offering the same for UK and EU buyers. The company claims its KEEN.RUGGED outsole is twice as abrasion-resistant as rubber, and it’s used Luftcell for the inner and midsoles because the material is more resistant to compression than EVA over time.

Keen really is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to making the Targhee IVs super durable. And after all, the most sustainable hiking boots are going to be the ones you don’t ever need to replace.

Jack Wolfskin 3D Prelight Rise 35 backpack : first impressions 

We always rate Keen's hiking sandals highly and the Elle Backstrap is no exception. With funky colors and a more classical sandal design, it might look more like a fun beach shoe than a serious contender for the trails, but between it's solid grip and all-day comfort, we'd happily wear this on any active vacation.

The foam midsole is lightweight and thick enough to absorb each step you take, while a slight rocker sole gives a smooth ride, especially for those in need of a little more ankle mobility. Three adjustable straps let your customize them to your feet while a snug fit and arch support means you'll feel pretty stable even on rougher ground.

Naturally, we're not necessarily suggesting you hike a 14er wearing these, and they don't offer as much toe protection as models like the Newport H2, but we tested them on the trails and beaches of Corsica and they're perfect for when you want to travel light on an active vacation that involves some straightforward hiking.

The rubber outsoles have decent lugs and while you don't get a lot of trail feel in these, they handle well on slick rocks and the DWR means you can get wet feet and not stay wet. We experienced out-of-the-box all-day comfort in these shoes and love that they use recycled materials and have no forever chemicals.

Keen Women's Elle Sport Backstrap Sandal: in the field

Last summer, I fell in love with hiking sandals thanks to acquiring the Keen Newport H2. I love the breathability they offer on a warm weather hike and the fact that I can get in the water without having to change into my water shoes, then keep walking. 

When the Elle Backstraps showed up looking distinctly beachy, I thought it might be a while before I was able to test them out, given that we are in the midst of a never-ending winter here in Scotland. Fortunately, I recently had to head to Corsica for an active adventure and figured that it would be the perfect spot to give these a whirl on the beaches, trails and lakes.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a US size 6.5, which is a half size up from my normal size and they're perfect on my feet. I don't have narrow or wide feet, so I didn't have to fuss around the straps much, but there's quite a good amount of customization possible with the three straps. Best of all, once I adjusted the straps to fit, I can just unstrap the heel to slide my foot in and out without having to mess around each time.

Comfort and breathability

I'm definitely a person who struggles with sandals and fashion shoes rubbing, but I was ecstatic to pull these on and know straight away that they were going to be comfortable for hours. The straps are  well padded and I haven't had any chafing anywhere, nor have I experienced any of that burning sensation on the bottoms of my feet after walking for a while like you can sometimes get with sandals.

For my particular feet and gait, the arch support feels really good and while I wouldn't tackle technical terrain in these, I felt quite happy hiking in them on a well-maintained path.

Compared to some hiking sandals, that can be more closed, these ones obviously are very breathable and I didn't get sweaty feet in them either at the beach or on the plane.

Grip and stability

I made sure to test these out on a slick rocks when I did a spot of wild swimming in an icy lake and the rubber outsole and lugs are good, equally so for dirt paths. I think they can handle anything I'd be likely to try walking on in a sandal.

The midsole is really quite chunky with a decent sized drop and a bit of a rocker sole, so I was a bit worried about turning an ankle at first, but instead they deliver a nice, stable ride, even in the sand.

Protection and durability

Compared to my Newports, and some other hiking sandals, these definitely have a bit less protection so I wouldn't wear them for rockier scrambles. That said, the straps are well-placed to provide quite a bit of support around my heel and the widest part of my foot.

It's too soon to tell how long they'll hold up, but they seem to be made of the typical Keen high quality stuff. Rubber does have a tendency to wear away a bit more easily, but then again, I don't exactly plan on wearing these on long treks. Thanks to the odor-control, I don't expect to have to wash them frequently which will help prolong their lifespan.

Keen Women's Elle Sport Backstrap Sandal: the bottom line

These shoes probably won't replace your favorite hiking boots, but what they are great for is summer trips where you're anticipating time on the trails, at the beach and in the water and you don't want to have to pack extra shoes. They're grippy and comfortable enough for walking and funky enough to pair with a sundress in the evening. If you're looking for a sandal that's a bit more technical and a bit less beachy, check out the Merrell Choprock Sieve instead.

Keen, which recently launched its lightest ever hiking boot – has expanded a collection of walking shoes for this winter. The Keen WK400 is now available in a fresh color range, plus new waterproof version and leather versions. 

The company uses its own KEEN.DRY waterproof membrane in the WK400 shoes, and says that they are the result of three years of development and 5000 miles of testing. 

As seen with the lightweight Keen Zionic waterproof boot, Keen appears to be moving towards a more standard hiking shoe look, but with its own twist. Features include the KEEN.CURVE design, which is said to offer a unique rolling feeling, "allowing the wearer to experience the full force of constant motion and forward momentum with every step".

The shoes also have a full-length underfoot plate that is claimed to be a natural accelerator of lower-leg movement, a wide outsole platform that should improve stability when hiking, and a high traction rubber outsole with multi-directional lugs. Bear in mind, however, that this isn't a hiking shoe for rough mountain terrain, steep slopes and scree but rather a walking shoe for well-trodden paths and trails.

Comfort and durability

The new Keen shoes have a deep 31mm of forefoot cushioning and a 10mm heel-to-toe drop, which the company believes “promotes forward momentum in your gait, while aiding stability and preventing the wearer from rocking backward”. 

Further comfort comes from a padded tongue and collar, as well as a contoured fit that aims to hug the foot although there is still plenty of forefoot width to allow feet to move and splay naturally as you walk.

The WK400 also has a mesh upper with TPU overlays for durability, and offset lacing to relieve pressure across the top of your foot.

The leather edition is constructed in premium nubuck leather, which is sourced from LWG (Leather Working Group) certified tanneries operating on a closed loop basis to reduce water and energy usage. This is an industry gold standard that eliminates waste water. The leather upper has been further treated with a PFC-free durable water repellent coating.

There's also a WK400 WP (waterproof) model, which has the added benefit of a KEEN.DRY waterproof and breathable membrane for wet, snowy and cold weather walking days.

All of the shoes have an Eco Anti Odor treatment that doesn't reply on the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides.

Keen Zionic Waterproof Hiking Boots: first impressions

After the recent release of the KEEN NXIS Evos, the launch of these KEEN Zionic Waterproof Hiking Boots sees yet another model added to the North American brand’s ever-expanding range of lightweight walking footwear options. Just like the most comfortable hiking boots and shoes, these aim to supply weather protection and foot support without the heft and bulk of a traditional hiking boot.

The Zionics are available in a mid or low cut. The latter falls into the hiking shoe category, but I’ve been testing the mids, to see how they compare to the best hiking boots and the best hiking boots and shoes for wide feet on the market.

Impressively, the Ripstop upper chassis of the Zionics is made mostly with recycled PET plastic (with some TPU overlays for additional strength). Breathable weather protection is supplied by the brand’s own KEEN.DRY waterproof membrane, enhanced by a dose of environmentally gentle PFA-free Durable Water Repellent, and an integrated tongue to keep cloud and trail juice from coming in the top.

The Zionics feature an air-injected midsole, plus a stability shank, and boast a heel “crash pad”, formed by the outsole extending around the heel to help absorb the impact of repeated footfall. There’s a PU insole with arch support, and extra padding around the Achilles.

To save weight, the oversized toe bumpers, which used to be a signature feature of KEEN footwear, have been almost entirely removed from the Zionics.

KEEN Zionic Waterproof Hiking Boots: on the trails

I’ve been wearing the KEEN Zionics during all-day hikes in fairly hot, but wet conditions, on mostly well-maintained trails around the South Downs, and on some more rugged terrain in the South West. These are exactly the kind of conditions the Zionics are designed for, with the boots being breathable and waterproof enough to deal with warm, damp weather, while remaining lightweight and highly cushioned so they’re comfortable and don’t fatigue you during big days out.

While remaining almost as light as the KEEN NXIS Evos, there is a lot less mesh on display on the upper chassis of the Zionics, and they don’t accumulate as much muck as a result – which I’ve found to be a big bonus in wet and muddy conditions.

A single pair of quicklace hooks makes them quick and easy to put on, and the integrated tongue helps keep grit and water out. The fit is comfortable, but I don’t think the way the Zionics hold my feet is quite as secure as the cradling feels in KEEN boots with the KonnectFit heel-capture system, such as the NXIS Evos and the Explore.

The level of cushioning is what makes the Zionics really stand out, however. The air-injected midsole combined with the heel “crash pad” supply some seriously good suspension. The PU insole with arch support also helps with comfort levels on long trail days, and I appreciate the extra Achilles protection too.

The tread on the outsole is low-profile by design, and designed to promote good ground connection and to facilitate a fluid heel-to-toe movement. KEEN claim the teeth on the outsole tread are multidirectional, but while they do vary in size, the 4mm lugs seem pretty uniform in the way they are shaped and angled to me, and I did experience some slippage while testing the Zionics, especially when walking on smooth wet rock. I also don’t think the control and braking capability is quite as good as some other boots that have reverse chevrons on the rear, including the NXIS Evos.

After being downsized on the NXIS Evos, KEEN’s classic big toe bumper is missing entirely from the Zionic. They still provide perfectly adequate toe protection for the trail conditions and uses the boot is designed for – which is at the lower end of the technical scale – but the emphasis is very much on saving weight rather than shielding your feet, and I kind of miss it.

Despite the stability shank, there is still a reasonable amount of flex across these boots – again, exactly inline for the purposes they have been made for, which is moving fairly fast over low-level tracks and trails, not cautiously edging around high rocks or tackling super-technical terrain in bad conditions.

Every effort has gone into making the Zionics as lightweight as possible while maintaining top-class cushioning and comfort levels. But, in making them a more dynamic boot, aimed at agile movers, KEEN have downsized the amount of protection the Zionics provide from the usual tank-like levels we have come to expect from the brand.

This isn’t bad, it’s just different – if you want to travel fast and light, both these and the KEEN NXIS Evos are well worth considering. If you want to trek on more technical trails, especially while carrying any significant weight or in challenging weather conditions, then a model like the KEEN Karraig would be a better choice.

Keen has launched a new range of speed hiking shoes and boots, which are the lightest it's ever made. The Zionic speed hiking footwear is described as offering outdoors fans comfort, support and grip but without extra grams. 

The Keen Zionic speed hiking shoes weigh just 278g for a women’s US size 7, and 378g for the men’s US size 9. The women's mid-height hiking boot is 300g, while the men's is 385g.

For comparison, Keen's lightweight NXIS series tip the scales at 309g and 321g for the women’s shoes and mid boots respectively, and 393g and 395g for the men’s equivalents.

What makes the Zionic different?

Keen has long been known for its distinctive outdoors footwear with a generous fit and an over-sized look. The Zionic speed hikers represent a shift to a more streamlined design that still allows the toes and forefoot to spread for all-day comfort, yet, from the outside, now looks more like a standard boot or shoe.

Keen has stuck with its penchant for bright and funky colours though, and there's a host of familiar features that fans of the brand will appreciate.

The shoes and boots are constructed with a rip-stop, recycled mesh upper, TPU overlays for extra durability and protection in exposed areas, plus the brand’s own KEEN.DRY waterproof and breathable membrane. Keen has added an eco-friendly PFA-free DWR coating.

Underfoot cushioning and support comes from an air-injected midsole, stability shank and removable PU insole with arch support. The brand has designed in what it calls a heel crash pad, where the outsole is wrapped around the heel to aid the absorption of impacts. The outsole has 4mm low profile lugs, which will work well on paved paths and loose trails.

Hiking comfort is said to be enhanced by a “palpably fluid heel to toe movement that flexes and supports with every step”.  There is added padding around the Achilles tendon area.

Keen uses a speed lace system that has top collar hooks to offer a swift and secure fit. A loop at the outside of the heel allows for two-finger leverage to get the shoes on and off. If you are prone to sweaty and smelly feet (hey, it happens!) you’ll also welcome the Keen Eco anti-odor treatment. 

The Zionic series is priced at £160 (about $210) for the mid-height boot and £150 (about $190) for the low cut shoe version. They're available at keenfootwear.de and selected lifestyle and sporting goods retailers.

Keen NXIS EVO Mid: first impressions

Also available as a hiking shoe, the Keen NXIS EVO mid offers additional ankle support for trekkers taking on slightly more technical trails and/or multi-day escapades while wearing a pack. 

The core piece of DNA in the NXIS EVO family is the innovative KonnectFit heel-capture system, which loops right around the back of your foot and works with the laces to supply a super-secure grip across your heel and forefoot area, providing complete confidence with every step, even on rough terrain while wearing a pack.

The upper chassis has a knit mesh finish, and the Keen NXIS EVOs are waterproof and breathable thanks to the brand’s own KEEN.DRY membrane. 

Cushioning comes from a compression-molded EVA midsole. Keen’s signature oversize toe bumper has been scaled down quite significantly on this model to reduce weight, but there’s still ample foot cover.

This is definitely one of the lighter and less protective and aggressive models in the Keen boot range, however, and it’s aimed at people who prioritize staying nimble and moving fast across less challenging landscapes – such as long-distance trails – rather than attempting difficult hikes in really tough or muddy, boggy terrain. The 4mm multidirectional lugs on the boots’ outsoles are adequate for easier escapades in most conditions, but they’re not aggressive enough for anything too epic.

There’s a lot of flex across the length of this boot, which will suit some people (they’re almost as soft and bendy as a trail-running shoe). But if you prefer a more rigid boot that will provide better foot support and more advanced performance while edging around rocks and ascending more technical peaks, then the Keen NXIS EVO Mid isn’t really for you.

Keen NXIS EVO Mid: on the trails

Although I wouldn’t take these boots too far off the beaten track, used in the right conditions and on the trails they were designed to tackle, the NXIS EVO Mids are ideal for day hikes in the hills and multi-day backpacking escapades along reasonably technical but well-defined sub-alpine paths from early spring through to late fall. 

Quick and easy to put on, they feel fantastically light and comfortable on my feet, and the innovative heel-lock genuinely does enhance the fit and fills me with confidence when ascents and descents get gnarly.

The biggest test I’ve given the Keen NXIS EVOs so far was during a four-day fastpacking adventure along the West Highland Way in the north of Scotland in late October. It was wet and wild the entire time, and the boots did get waterlogged after a while, but they still kept me warm and comfortable. The compression-molded EVA midsole supplied decent amounts of bounce and cushioning, and the lightweight build meant I could travel quickly.

Aside from the fact that they got soggy, my biggest concern about the design of the Keen NXIS EVOs is that in wet and muddy conditions, such as I encountered in Scotland, the external knit mesh accumulated loads of dirt, which impacted performance, was fiddly to clean and made me question the longevity of the product. I think this model is best suited to drier climes such as Colorado, rather than the oft-soggy landscape we have here in the UK.

I’ve appreciated using them a whole lot more in better, benign conditions, when I can move along the trail at a good pace, enjoying the secure hold the boot has on my foot and the perceptible feedback from the trail you still get through the outer and mid sole.

Keen Newport H2 hiking sandals: first impressions 

Keen is celebrating 20 years of the Newport sandal in 2023, so you’d think it would have perfected the art of an amphibious water and land shoe – and you’d be correct. The Keen Newport H2 offers the slip-on ease and traction you want from a water shoe, but with breathability and toe protection makes for a solid hiking sandal too, especially if you hike in hot weather, marshy conditions or are just looking for a slightly more natural foot feel.

The chunky rubber outsole and protective upper are a far cry from what you might consider a classic sandal, but still provide the quick drying breathability you’d want from such a shoe. 

These sandals easily pull on with a bungee cord to adjust them and are astonishingly comfortable out-of-the-box with a snug fit around the heel and midfoot and roomy toe box. That said, the flex in the sole allows for a more natural gait, which might take some getting used to if you’re walking for longer distances. These lost some traction when we tested them on muddy slopes and we felt our feet moving around a little on rough ground, but we still managed to walk miles in them.

They’re easily one of the most competitive hiking sandals out there, and priced in line with similar shoes, making them an obvious choice for anyone looking for a serious water-to-land shoe.

Keen Newport H2 hiking sandals: in the field

It’s taken me 20 years to test out these iconic sandals, with my previous experience of hiking sandals being limited to a pair of Chacos which I quickly relegated to water shoes when I realized they weren’t comfortable enough for hiking. I can’t resist the pun and telling you that I was really keen to give them a go! 

Now even though I never embraced the hiking in sandals movement myself, I’m no stranger to the idea. Back in my old stomping grounds of Colorado, several of my best hiking buddies wouldn’t hike any other way, but it makes sense there, when mud on the trails in the summer is unheard of. But here in Scotland? Hiking in sandals? The idea of crossing boggy terrain, steep grassy slopes and rocky knife edge ridges seems positively mad, so naturally when I heard the Rhode Island company was celebrating two decades of the Newport, I wanted to put the idea to the test on some of my favorite cross country hikes. 

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing and fit

These shoes run a tad small. I am a UK size 3.5 but wear a 4 for hiking shoes to give my feet room to swell up, and I was surprised by how snug the 4 was, so I’d recommend going up a half size. As for fit, like I said they feel like a glove, really embracing my heel and midfoot, with welcome space around the toes. The roomy toe box plus stretchy uppers makes these a good candidate for wide feet.

They have a bungee cord adjustment which does pull them tighter, but mostly around the cuff and it may not be adjustable enough for everyone’s feet.

Weight

These are actually heavier than the last pair of regular hiking shoes I tested so I wouldn’t say they’re especially light, but they’re certainly on par with a lightweight hiking shoe.

Comfort and breathability

These pull on fairly easily (even with my high arches) although socks make things a little harder, pull off very easily and feel really comfortable both with and without socks. On my left foot, which is my bigger foot, the strap initially hurt my heel a little so I anticipated some rubbing but in fact there was none. 

Also on the comfort front, I noticed straight away that my feet were able to flex more naturally at the joint where my feet meet my toes whilst hiking in these. This is something I’m really interested in, because I’ve noticed that as I’ve gotten more into trail running the last three years, I’m losing some mobility in my feet. That said, the increased mobility meant that my feet started to fatigue and burn a little in that spot after a couple of miles on my first walk, but fortunately I had a backup pair of shoes in my backpack.

I’d expect these shoes to be breathable, since they’re sandals, and I’m pleased to report they are. Of course, my feet got more wet in them when passing through boggy sections than they might in hiking boots, but they also dry quickly too. They’re treated with an anti-odor protection, which is great if you’re planning on wearing them without socks, but speaking of socks, it did occur to me that since I’d mostly wear them with thin, wool socks in Scotland, I’d probably end up washing a lot more socks since they’ll get muddier than in shoes.

Grip and stability

Given that these are sandals, I was impressed by the grip and stability of these shoes on a hike. That said, I did notice I was slipping a little in muddy sections, and when I was walking over especially rocky ground I noticed my heel moving around more than I’d like. I’ll definitely wear them on future hikes, but mostly on well-maintained dirt paths.

Protection and durability

The protection these sandals offer against trail hazards or rocky river beds is really great and much better than I anticipated, on par with a regular hiking shoe or any water shoe. Of course, that means if you get a pebble inside them it’s not as easy to shake it loose without removing them, but this is true of many hiking sandals.

As for durability, these are a sturdy and well-designed pair of shoes and I’m not surprised that my friend Kelly has been wearing hers for over a decade.

The KEEN WK400 X MHM walks start in Bedford on April 8 and travel around England, with one date in Scotland and another in Northern Ireland, from April 8 to 30.  

What is Mental Health Mates?

Mental Health Mates was founded by journalist and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon in 2016. It forms a network of 150 peer support groups that meet regularly across the UK.

The aim is to provide a safe space to walk, connect and share without fear or judgement. 

Led by regional volunteers, the walks provide an opportunity to connect with others and take preventative measures to improve mental wellbeing.

It is widely believed that walking can boost emotional wellbeing and ease chronic mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression. There is a growing bank of research that evidences the benefits.

Walking with other people can further build on these benefits by providing positive social interactions that can combat loneliness, boost self-esteem and improve negative mood.  

“We know, from personal experience, that mental illness magnifies through isolation," says Gordon. "So whether it is talking to someone, sharing with them or simply walking beside them, we believe that getting connected is the first steps to recovery.” 

We're KEEN to get more people outdoors

Meanwhile, KEEN has pledged a mission to  promote the benefits of spending time outdoors and to encourage people to do so. KEEN Circadia Waterproof Boot: first impressions

The KEEN Circadia Waterproof Boot is from a US brand renowned for producing well-priced and practical outdoor footwear, from its perennially popular trail sandals to its wide range of hiking boots. Here at Advnture.com, we’ve been particularly impressed with the superlight, summer-ready Terradora II mid boot (designed specifically for women), as well as the budget-friendly Explore Mid trainer-hiker and their more rugged trekking and backpacking-focused Karraig boot. But do these new Circadias join the ranks of the best hiking boots?

The Circadia Mids lie somewhere between the Explore and the Karraig models. I found that they were flexible and instantly comfortable, just like most trainer-hikers, but with a burlier construction that offered me a bit more durability and all-round protection out on the trail. They’re fairly big and chunky boots with a broad, high-volume fit that, good for people searching for the best hiking boots and shoes for wide feet.

In terms of build, they feature KEEN’s trademark oversized toe bumpers, and thick heel counters with robust double-stitched leather uppers. However, a generously padded mesh ankle cuff and tongue along with mesh panel inlays ensure they feel plush and comfortable yet also flexible, without the stiffness and break-in time associated with traditional all-leather boots.

They score high for sustainability too, since the nubuck leather is sourced from a tannery certified by the Leather Working Group. And they’re finished with a water-repellent treatment that is free from harmful PFC chemicals.

Underfoot, I discovered that the dual density “LuftCore” EVA-based midsole provides good cushioning. The sole is still very bendy though, which made for an easy walking action. Traction comes from a tread pattern of 5mm multi-directional chevron-shaped cleats. While these aren’t the most aggressive lugs, the boot’s chunky design still puts plenty of rubber in contact with the ground.

KEEN Circadia Waterproof Boot: in the field

I put these boots to the test on the hills and mountains of my native Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park in Wales, to see how they coped with challenging weather and technical terrain.

They proved instantly comfortable straight out of the box, with an accommodating fit that is great for broad or high-volume feet. And though I thought they initially looked and felt a bit ungainly, KEEN’s heel capture system pulls everything in tight, despite the relatively simple lacing system and single set of lace hooks.

The big and beefy look does mean these boots don’t always feel the most nimble or precise – but then, they’re not designed for rock-hopping across technical terrain. Instead, the Circadia is a boot that is most at home on well-trodden trails. KEEN calls them an, “everyday hiking boot”, which sums them up well – the focus here is on easy walking comfort and flexibility, but with plenty of added protection too. What this means is that if you trip over a tree root or accidentally kick the odd rock, you’ll hardly feel it.

On test, I liked their “planted” feel, especially when tackling dry, dusty trails. However, they’re equally at home in the wet too. Waterproofing comes from KEEN’s own membrane rather than a branded Gore-Tex liner, but it did its job on test. My feet stayed dry even when sloshing through muddy puddles. Grip was generally good, though I stuck to safer ground rather than testing these boots beyond their limits. That’s because, as mentioned, they lack the stiffness and precision to tackle more technical terrain.

Our only other negatives are that, inevitably, the mostly leather construction of these boots means they feel a little heavier and warmer than fabric alternatives, especially in high summer. There are undoubtedly lighter mid-cut boots around, though few that feel as reassuringly protective as the Circadia.

All in all, if your priorities are comfort, cushioning and protection, these are a great choice – and though they’re not as light as some of the more streamlined hybrid trainer-hikers, they should prove more durable, thanks to those leather uppers and the robust toecap. They’re also extremely well-priced, with a roomy, generous fit that could be a good option if you’ve struggled to fit comfortable footwear in the past.

Keen Astoria West: first impressions

Keen’s hiking sandals are deservedly popular, and the Keen Astoria West is unlikely to buck that trend. We’ve yet to review one of their summer shoes we didn’t like and the female-specific Keen Astoria West (men after a similar style will get on with the Clearwater shandal) sits high in our best water shoes and aquatic sandals recommendations.

Straight out of the box we liked the look of this classy shoe, and after having trialled many Keen shoes – and always having been impressed by their robustness – we had high hopes that they would perform well in the wet environments they were born to take on.

Keen Astoria West: in action

Designed to go from trail to town to waterfront without batting an eyelet (they certainly won’t detrimentally impact your average hiking speed), the Astoria Wests stood out on test for the walking comfort they offer.

Oversized, but very cushioned, soles make these sandals feel barely there despite their middling 400g weight, and we liked the close-fitting but comfortable webbing straps, designed to let your feet breathe and quick to dry once wet. Keen call this design a ‘wedge’ sandal, but don’t let that put you off – there’s no wobbly high platform here, just that higher sole that feels bouncy even if you tackle long distances.

The Astoria Wests have a firm, wide protective rubber toe box that’s brilliant for protecting pinkies if you do encounter rocks both under the water and on the shore, and their ‘Aquagrip’ soles are sticky even on wet surfaces, as they are designed to be.

A good and very versatile summer shandal. This design fits on the narrow side, however, so if you have wide feet they may not suit you.

First impressions

The deliciously comfortable Keen Terradora IIs feel as light and forgiving to wear as your favourite pair of sneakers – if comfort is top of your wish list, these are some of the best women's hiking boots for you.

The upper fabric may be soft and tactile, but it’s still waterproof to deal with sudden showers, and Keen’s own-brand All Terrain soles offer decent grip on less challenging terrain (but won’t stand up to scrambling over wet, slippy rock). The Terradora IIs are highly breathable and keep feet comfortably cool in hot weather, but don’t offer much warmth in cooler months – they’re built with summer hikes in mind.

Anti-odour insoles are definitely effective at reducing, if not eliminating, sweaty smells after long days of walking, making these boots a good choice for multi-day backpacking routes.

In the field

We’ve been long-term testing the Keen Terradora IIs (and before that, the original Terradora, which is also a great boot and which you may find for cheaper than its newer counterpart) on hot-weather hiking holidays overseas and summer hikes in the UK alike. Most recently we walked 18 miles over the hottest day of the year – and despite sweating buckets, never felt like our feet were overheating. 

The Terradora IIs wick away sweat and keep feet cool, especially when paired with light cotton walking socks. We also rate the cushioning panels around the ankles of the Terradoras, which are comfortable over long distances – but wish the boots could be laced higher and tighter for more ankle control on rocky ground, and to stop dirt and grit making their way inside. 

That said, they’re still our go-to boots when the sun is shining. We like the massive colour range (all with very creative names) to choose from, which make the attractive Terradora IIs stand out in a sea of boring brown and grey hiking footwear.
