Patagonia Torentshell 3L: first impressions

I first tested this shell in the Lake District, right at the cusp of autumn where the weather turns wet and those warm, dry days of summer seem to fade to distant memory. The jacket certainly was put through its paces as we began the ascent of Harrison Stickle and the heavens truly opened. Knowing that even the most technical jacket would not long withstand this kind of deluge, I pulled over the hood, cinched every cord that i could, opened the pit zips and begrudgingly trudged upwards.

With a very simple aesthetic, the Torrentshell runs light on the features you may see on higher spec shells. However there are a number of quality of life improvements from the 2.5 layer version.

The central zip runs very smooth and has a storm flap to prevent moisture entering. It features a micro-fleece lined neck which again helps take away that clammy feeling. The hood can be rolled down and clipped in whilst also remaining suited for a helmet, being adjustable both at the neck and the peak of the head with a stiff front which allows rain to roll off. I did, however, find the toggles for the hood and hem to be somewhat unintuitive and almost impossible to adjust whilst wearing gloves.

There are two zippered hand warmer pockets on the lower half which boast an impressive amount of room. However I would have really appreciated internal or chest pockets, as the lower pockets were obstructed by my backpack hip belt. Climbers won't find this to be an issue, but if you're hiking in it, you may find this frustrating.

Fit and appearance

For my build the Torrentshell fits slightly on the slim side, but thankfully still gives enough room underneath for a decent sized warm layer. I'm 6ft 2in (1.88m), I was wearing an XL, and it proved long enough to give me freedom of movement and avoid exposing any skin when stretching either legs or arms.

The coat retains the simple look of the earlier 2.5 layer iteration, with small but effective zips and clasps often hidden behind folds. Patagonia offers a plethora of colour choices, with options for either a single block colour or a two tone design.

I liked the Cascade Green colorway, but perhaps while out in the hills a colour that blends less with the surroundings would be the wiser choice for the sake of visibility. The shell utilises a 50 denier fabric that feels flexible and rarely clammy against your skin, giving a good balance of comfort and durability.

Weight and packability

Coming in at 15.5oz (438g) for the XL version, the jacket certainly isn't the lightest on the market. However, its a decent weight, given its price point for a mid range shell and I never felt the jacket was a burden, whether worn or packed away.

The jacket can be packed into its left hand pocket, which uses a smart two-way zip, but found this feature to be slightly too bulky given the size of the pocket and opted to revert to the more versatile method of just stuffing it into my backpack instead. In comparison to the earlier 2.5L version, the fabric of the jacket is exceptionally malleable throughout, meaning that despite the weight the jacket is perfectly suited to be pushed into a pack bottle-holder or other equivalent space.

Waterproofing and breathability

Patagonia has used its own membrane in the 3-layer design, which has undergone its in-house H2No performance standard testing, so there's no hydrostatic head listed for this jacket.

As a brand that stands upon its efforts towards sustainability, this performance testing has allowed the brand to move away from Gore-Tex and its historic use of PFAS.

In torrential rail, it wasn't long before the shell wetted out. However in brief showers or even a consistent drizzle I found the jacket to perform very well, remaining comfortable and avoiding the 'slimy' stuck to the skin feeling I've experienced with Gore-Tex equivalents.

Where I really struggled with this jacket was in breathability. With a 3-layer construction I found that on strenuous ascents I was forever wondering whether the wet was coming from the inside or the outside!

There are two 12in (30cm) pit zips built into the shell to help you dump heat, but I could honestly feel little, if any, tangible difference even when both were fully open. Admittedly, I always run on the warmer side while hiking and have yet to find a shell that truly balances waterproofing with breathability. Happily, I did find that the coat dried very quickly when we were afforded breaks in the rain.

Last week, we revealed that Patagonia’s perennially popular Nano Puff jacket has just got a rugged new cousin, and now we’ve learned that the Nano Puff itself has received a glow up for fall.

The first Nano Puff dropped all the way back in 2009, which doesn’t sound that long ago, but that makes it older than iPads, Hoka running shoes and Instagram to put it in historical perspective.

Anyway, it was designed as a go-to jacket for any outdoor activity and it’s seen a few changes and upgrades over the years, including switching to PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco in 2016, (made with 55% recycled content) which was created after Patagonia asked the insulation tech wizards to help them cut down on their impact on the planet without reducing the performance of the jacket.

In the eyes of many hikers, climbers and skiers, the Nano Puff is practically perfect and comes with us all year round, but the brand never seems to stop finding small ways to make it better.

For fall 2025, the new Patagonia Nano Puff jacket allows for better mobility with more room in the shoulders. That’s bound to make it better for climbing and for layering as the weather gets colder.

The jacket has only just hit the shelves, but it’s already garnered one glowing review from a fan who says the updated fit is an improvement, writing: “This jacket gives you a bit of wiggle room without issue, which is heavily appreciated.”

When you need to bundle up against the windchill, the Hi-Loft is packed with 170g and 200g PrimaLoft Silver insulation Eco, made from recycled polyester and known for its excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. Of course, it keeps insulting if you get wet, making for a better barrier against winter conditions, but it's treated with a PFAS-free DWR to help you stay dry in nasty weather.

The insulation is packed in a 4in Nano Puff brick pattern that helps with loft (and therefore, heat trapping), and it's all wrapped inside a recycled polyester shell and lining that's reinforced at the shoulders with tough overlays that help protect your jacket against the demands of your backpack.

There's a helmet-compatible hood that's adjustable to cinch tight against the wind, whether you're searching for a campsite or on belay, a two-way zipper so you can easily access your harness or inner pockets, and speaking of pockets, the one on the chest is plenty big enough to hold your phone.

Patagonia has launched a new short film series: Parenting: Disaster Style and the first episode has just dropped. The series follows the adventures of alpinists Zoe Hart and her husband, Maxime Turgeon, as they introduce their children, Mathias and Mika, to the great outdoors and all things adventure.

The series sees the young family go backcountry skiing in Italy, dirtbag along the French coast and cultivate food at their Chamonix home, beneath the watchful Mont Blanc.

Hart and Turgeon hope to engender the same love of the natural world and mountain adventure that they enjoy to their kids, while also increasing their resilience and self-belief. Hart says: "if you push your kids past what they think is possible, whether it’s being cold or tired or wet, they’ll learn they have the capacity to do way more than they thought they could.”

Before having kids, in their search for mountain adventure on some of the world's most technical peaks, Hart and Turgeon had endured their fair share of epics and freezing cold nights on some far-flung wall or other.

Tongue firmly in cheek, they called their style 'Disaster Alpinism', which is how the series got its name. "Go at it, throw everything into it, it's usually epic and afterwards it's really awesome," says Hart about both alpinism and parenting.

When Patagonia launched the Nano Puff jacket back in 2009, it set a new gold standard for mid layers. The jacket has evolved over the years to become more sustainable, with the addition of PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco in 2017, but the basic recipe of a lightweight and warm jacket that can be worn on the outside in the shoulder seasons and between layers in winter has proved perennially popular. Never one to rest on its laurels, however, Patagonia has just dropped a new mid layer this season that, for some, might just be a worthy opponent to the Nano Puff.

The Patagonia Light Gust Jacket is a lightweight, insulated jacket that the brand says is a "full-zip staple for mixed weather and traveling light," but it has a few key differences compared to the Nano Puff.

Instead of PrimaLoft, it's packed with Patagonia's proprietary warm 60-g Thermogreen insulation (made with 100% recycled polyester) to keep the chill out, and in place of the shiny outer fabric, it boasts a more retro matte shell. The shell and lining are made with 70% recycled polyester treated with a PFAS-free DWR, and unlike the Nano Puff, it's stretchy for increased movement.

Though the jacket has only just hit the shelves, several enthusiastic fans have already reviewed it, with one saying it's "way better than the nano puff" thanks in part to that added stretch.

"I see this jacket as the nano puff's competitor, and this wipes the floor with it. This jacket has way more movement and feels lighter."

The press images show the Light Gust to have a slightly more boxy cut, which is definitely more on trend these days, and looks a little less technical in appearance to the Nano Puff, but it still looks slim enough that you could layer your Patagonia Torrentshell over the top without any issues, and buyers note that it fits true to size.

The design features larger-sized baffles pattern compared to the Nano Puff which gives it a more old-school quilted look and this might be one of those jackets you end up wearing to the bar or at school pickup as well as on the trail.

If you're in the market for a new layer this spring and comparing this to the Nano Puff, it's worth noting that the Light Gust, while not exactly heavy, is heavier at 439g compared to the Nano Puff's 337g. That places it about midweight compared to other softshell jackets we've tested.

It's also the same price as the Nano Puff, at $239 / £230, so it all comes down to whether you can afford those few extra grams for a jacket you might wear more often, or need to keep your pack as light as possible.

The main gripe we're seeing from those who have tested is the lack of an internal pocket to stash valuables like your phone and wallet, and that's something you will find on the Nano Puff. However, it does feature a zipped chest pocket.

The Patagonia Light Gust jacket is available now in men's sizing in Smolder Blue, Pelican, Black and Basin Green, and in women's sizing in Black and Heartleaf Green.

Winter might have come to an end at lower elevations, but it will be back, and now is a great time to cash in on end-of-season sales on protective gear you'll be needing in seven months. Right now, you can snag the rugged Patagonia Triolet Pants for just $299.73 at REI. That's a hefty $100 off the regular asking price for these waterproof pants, which are tough enough to withstand snow and harnesses as well as rainy conditions.

Last year, I tested these pants out along with the Triolet Jacket in the Gore-Tex rain tower, which simulates soggy conditions to test gear. I stayed bone dry on the inside thanks to these hardy rain/snow pants, which are made using a three-layer construction that sandwiches the new GORE-TEX membrane in between recycled polyester inner and face fabric. The face fabric is then treated with PFC-free DWR, which helps repel moisture and leaves a smaller footprint.

Though these are a pair of over pants, they are packed full of features. Full length outer leg zippers are fully waterproof and have two-way zippers which makes it easier to pull them on and off when you’re already wearing your hiking boots and also means you have built-in vents for warmer days.

This deal applies to women's sizing in the Torrey Pine Green colorway, and right now all sizes still available, but you'll have to act fast as this style has been discontinued.

Spring has always been the season to lighten up, and it seems Patagonia has taken that directive literally, with a major overhaul of its perennially popular Nano-Air jacket.

The Patagonia Nano-Air Ultralight Hoody takes the ingredients that made the original 2014 design so successful – stretchy, breathable warmth provided by innovative FullRange insulation with a buttery soft shell – and has shaved a serious amount of weight off.

At 400g, the original Nano-Air wasn't exactly heavy, but the Nano-Air Ultralight barely tips the scales at all at just 249g for men's (215g for women's) with 20g of insulation compared to the original's 60g. With that, it's cut all the way down on bulk with a slim fit that's ideal for layering in colder seasons. That means it's also more breathable than ever, and ideal for high-output activities on these spring days when the weather can be cooler than you expected but you don't want to have to stop and strip off layers.

The brand says that, like its predecessors, the compressible, stretchy design and underarm panels of the Ultralight let you move in all directions, even when it's worn under a harness or a backpack. The ripstop polyester shell might be soft to the touch, but it's designed to hold up against rubbing straps too.

The collar comes up extra high for protection against a brisk wind, and the passive hood is designed to stay put without messing with toggles, and fits under a helmet. If you encounter a light rain, it's treated with a DWR (PFAS-free of course).

The whole thing packs away in the chest pocket so it can be clipped to your backpack or harness with a carabiner, and we probably don't have to tell you this, but it's sustainably constructed using 100% recycled polyester.

This jacket is one you'll be working up a sweat in, and we're glad to see it's easy to chuck in the washing machine when it needs freshening up. At first glance, it looks like an even lighter alternative to the Montane Fireball Lite and should be a strong contender for a year-round layer that staves off a morning chill and also acts as a great mid layer in winter.

Along with the reduction in weight comes a cut in price, too. The Patagonia Nano-Air Ultralight jacket is available now in men's sizing in Pollinator Orange, Wetland Blue and Smolder Blue and in women's sizing in Smolder Blue and Abundant Blue for $249 / £220 at Patagonia.

When we reviewed the Patagonia R1 CrossStrata Hoody last year, we gave it nearly perfect marks for warmth, breathability and protection against the wind – something that's often missing in fleece jackets. Ama Dablam

Location: Khumbu, Nepalese Himalayas

Height: 6,812 meters

The embodiment of Himalayan majesty, Ama Dablam is such a beautiful mountain that many consider it the highlight of the Everest Base Camp Trek, outshining the world’s highest mountain with its beguiling form.

Its name translates to ‘mother’s necklace’, a reference to the hanging glacier on its east face, the dablam, which occupies the space between the southwest and northwest ridges, said to be the mother’s arms. Whichever direction it’s viewed from, its summit seems to arrow towards the sky in a uniquely charismatic display of mountain might.

Khan Tengri

Location: Tian Shan, Kyrgyzstan / China / Kazakhstan border

Height: 7,010 meters

The world’s most northerly 7,000-meter peak, the sight of Khan Tengri is hard-won, while its breathtaking remoteness means only a select group have laid eyes upon it. But what a sight it is – a quite magnificent white pyramid that draws mountaineers like moths to a flame. Climbing Khan Tengri is a huge challenge. The mountain’s moods are fickle and the weather gods are often against the plunky souls who venture onto its ridges.

Alpamayo

Location: Cordilera Blanca, Peruvian Andes

Height: 5,947 meters

Perhaps more than any other in the world, Alpamayo is frequently cited as Earth’s most beautiful mountain. Its southwest face is instantly recognizable, brilliantly white, outshining even the most well produced Colgate advert. The face is sculpted by classic Andean flutings, channels forged by melting snow and ice, giving this mighty white wall texture, depth, light and dark, and drawing gazes heavenward.

From other angles Alpamayo is a striking pyramid, a gigantic sorbet Toblerone. Also known as Shuyturaju, any adventure to its summit is technical, though climbers can expect unforgettable views unique to the Andes. It’s no wonder the peak is a popular objective for alpinists around the globe.

The Matterhorn

Location: Valais, Swiss Alps

Height: 4,478 meters

Hundreds of pointy peaks around the world are bestowed with the ‘Matterhorn of...’ gong. From Cnicht in Wales and Wyoming’s Grand Teton to Himalayan giants like Ama Dablam and Shivling, loads of mountains are likened to the legendary peak on the Italian/Swiss border. Yet, there is truly only one Matterhorn.

This icon of the Alps is, for many, the quintessential mountain peak. Its four ridges rise to a satisfying pointed summit, like a child’s drawing – clichéd but true. The mountain played a pivot role in the Golden Age of Alpinism, when British mountaineer Edward Whymper’s party claimed the first ascent in 1865, only for four of the group to tragically perish during the descent. It was the last great peak of the Alps to be climbed, ushering in the end of the Golden Age.

Ketil

Location: Kujalleq, Greenland

Height: 2,010 metres

Imagine a big wall of El Capitan scale forged into the side of a gigantic peak, a mighty hunk of granite that towers above the remote, snowy wilds of Klosterdalen in Southern Greenland. This is Ketil, a 2,010-meter monster, home to one of the most challenging big walls on the planet – its vast west face.

The secret is out and the mountain is quickly gaining repute among the world’s elite climbers. Its neighbors, Ulamertorsuaq and Nalumasortoq, are two more breathlessly spectacular sights that also rise above the peninsula on the eastern side of the Tasermiut Fjord.

Watzmann

Location: Berchtesgaden, Germany

Height: 2,713 meters

Towering above the gorgeous Berchtesgaden, in the very southeastern tip of Germany, is the beguiling form of the Watzmann. This awesome, three-peaked giant has fascinated hikers and mountaineers for generations thanks to its eye-catching shape. According to legend, the tyrannical King Watze was punished for his wicked ways by God, who turned him and his family to stone, creating the massif.

A traverse of the Watzmann is popular with ambitious hikers, who make use of the Watzmannhaus mountain hut to gain an advanced starting point. Expect fun scrambling, staggering exposure, big drops and narrow sections. The more challenging sections have klettersteig – the German word for via ferrata – cables, which most people clip into to ensure safe passage.

Cerro Chaltén

Location: Patagonia

Height: 3,405 meters

Also known as Fitz Roy after Robert FitzRoy, the captain of the HMS Beagle who surveyed large parts of the Patagonian coast in 1834, Cerro Chaltén is a uniquely beautiful mountain. The central monolith in a jagged massif of granite spires, the mountain is a masterpiece. The artistry of snow, ice and wind is rarely as striking as it is here, revealing nature as the ultimate sculptor. The way cloud broils around its cliffs are what earned it the name Chalten, meaning Smoking Mountain in Patagonia’s Tehulche dialect. If the massif’s profile looks vaguely familiar, it’s because you’ve undoubtedly seen it before in the logo of global outdoor brand Patagonia.

Cerro Chaltén has been attracting the world’s greatest mountaineers and climbers since its first ascent in 1952 by Lionel Terray and Guide Magnone. American big wall climbers Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell were the first to complete the seven-peak traverse the massif in 2014. They earned a Piolet d’Or for their efforts, very much considered as the Oscars of mountaineering.

Machapuchare

Location: Annapurna range, Nepalese Himalayas

Height: 6,993 meters

An unforgettable sight in Nepal’s Annapurna region, Machapuchare enthralls all who lay eyes upon its fish tail summit. It’s location as a southern outlier, rising in a huge upthrust above relatively low terrain, make it appear particularly dramatic. Its steep flanks and double summits bestow it with the sort of majesty lesser peaks can only dream of. At sunrise and sunset, the mountain’s walls are set ablaze in a dazzling display of alpenglow.

This mystical mountain’s allure is only added to by the fact that it’s one of the world’s great unclimbed peaks. Ascents are not allowed, as the mountain is sacred to the local Gurungs who believe it to be the abode of Shiva. Meanwhile, its twin tops are believed to represent the divine brothers of Nara and Narayan by folk from the Parbat and Kaski districts.

Mount Kailash

Location: Kailash Range, Trans Himalaya, Tibet

Height: 6,638 meters

A spiritual epicenter and the holiest mountain on the planet for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bonpo, Mount Kailash’s beauty is such that it commands reverence. A 53-kilometer pilgrimage around the mountain, the Kailash Parikrama, or Kora to Buddhists, is said to cleanse the soul of those who complete the loop. It’s a trek undertaken by members of all four religions. For Hindus, the mountain is the abode of Shiva; for Jains, it’s where founder Rishavdev attained Nirvana; for Bonpo, it’s the central point of all Tantra Rituals and Forces; and for Buddhists it’s the earthly manifestation of Mount Meru, the central world-mountain in the religion's cosmology.

Adding to this Tibetan mountain’s historic and cultural significance, the region around the mountain gives birth to four of the Indian subcontinent’s great rivers: the Brahmaputra, the Indus, the Sutlej and the Karnali. As with Machapuchare, the sanctity of Kailash’s summit means that climbing is prohibited, making it one of the world’s great unclimbed peaks.

K2

Location: Karakorum range, Pakistan

Height: 8,611 meters

When seen from the great meeting of glaciers at Concordia, K2 is a soaring pyramid, reaching high towards the stratosphere, the very epitome of what a mountain should be. The world’s second highest mountain is undoubtedly one of its most beautiful, rising higher than all else in the Karakorum range. It may play second fiddle to Everest in terms of height, but when it comes to appearance, there’s only one winner.

A siren song to elite mountaineers, its beauty is matched by its savage nature. K2 is one of the world’s most dangerous mountains. Recent successes have dulled the statistics but, as of 2023, the summit to death ratio was around 8:1. The difficulty of its climbing routes, combined with the dangers of high altitude and the death zone, make reaching its lofty summit a hugely committing proposition.

Denali

Location: Alaska, USA

Height: 6,190 meters

The crowning glory of the Denali National Park and the highest mountain in North America, Denali is an awe-inspiring sight. It’s massive topographic prominence, the height from its base to its summit, makes it appear every single one of its 6,190 meters. No less than five glaciers flow from its slopes and its northern latitude means it experiences extreme weather.

Denali is the native Alaskan name given to the mountain and means ‘Great One’ in the Athabascan language of the Koyukon Alaska Native people of the region. The name has been in use for more than 10,000 years. In the US, the mountain is now officially titled Mount McKinley, a name given in 1896 in honor of the 25th US President William McKinley. Denali had been the official name between 2015 and 2025, though the McKinley name was controversially reinstated by incoming President Donald Trump when he took office for the second time in January 2025, with much criticism from the Alaskan community, mountaineers and wilderness lovers worldwide.

In the world of rock climbing, Tommy Caldwell is one of the all-time great climbers. His many accomplishments, speed records and first ascents are even more impressive when you factor in a traumatic kidnapping in 2000 and the loss of his left index finger in an accident in 2001. Rather than holding him back, Caldwell used these events as fuel, becoming even more determined to reach to top of his game.

He's perhaps best known for his free ascent of the Dawn Wall in 2015, alongside Kevin Jorgeson, which was widely regarded as one of the greatest climbs in history. The achievement was documented in the critically acclaimed 2017 film The Dawn Wall and brought both Yosemite big wall climbing and Caldwell to wider audiences. He also featured prominently in 2018’s smash hit Free Solo, which documented Alex Honnold’s incredible free solo climb of Freerider on El Cap.

Caldwell was one of America’s greatest climbers long before he sent The Dawn Wall and he’s continued to achieve stunning climbs ever since. We asked one of our mountaineering experts to delve into his remarkable life and put his achievements into context. Sport climbing grades are sometimes included alongside his routes, see our separate feature on climbing rating systems for how these compare to other climbs.

Early life

Born in Colorado in 1978 to two mountain guides, it was no surprise that the young Caldwell developed a passion for climbing and wild places. The family visited Yosemite annually and Caldwell soon developed a passion or the rock, aided by his admiration for his father Mike’s climbing. His father would be his partner throughout his childhood climbing adventures and into his teens.

He started competing at the age of 16 and he met future wife and world-class climber Beth Rodden during the American comp circuit in 1995, though they wouldn’t begin dating until 2000. They’d go on to form a strong partnership, climbing extensively in Yosemite and beyond.

Meet the expert

Held Hostage in Kyrgyzstan

In 2000, along with Rodden, and climbers John Dickey and Jason ‘Singer’ Smith, Caldwell set out to tackle Yellow Wall, a 2,500-foot wall on Mount Zhioltaya Stena in Kyrgyzstan’s Kara-su Valley. However, on the second day of their attempt, they were taken hostage by armed fundamentalists who were in conflict with the Kyrgyz government. The four climbers were held for six days, during which time they experienced being in the crossfire between the rebels and Kyrgyz soldiers. During one such battle, they witnessed the rebels execute a soldier they had taken captive.

Having managed to gain their captors’ trust, the four climbers conspired as to how to escape. The ideal opportunity arose when three of the rebels departed one night, leaving just one armed man guarding them, as they moved along a precipitous ridge. At the top, Caldwell seized the chance, grabbed him by his gun strap and pulled him over the edge. He disappeared into the abyss. The climbers fled and managed to make it to the safety of a Kyrgyz army camp. Caldwell later learned that the man he’d pulled over the edge had survived, though he’d been captured and sentenced to death by the army.

Caldwell was initially very shaken by the incident, though he also believes the experience has since helped him to stay calm during climbs. He said: “In a lot of regards, that experience was so intense and painful and life-threatening, it just turned up the volume so much that everything since then has felt comparatively mellow.”

Dazzling ascents after adversity

In 2001, Caldwell lost his left index finger in a tablesaw accident and spent two weeks in hospital. He was faced with never being able to climb to the same level again but Rodden put together a training schedule and Caldwell launched into it with determination. He said that: “In time, I realized my mind was the only thing holding me back.” He told himself that the pain was growth and he’d soon be climbing at a level way beyond anyone would have expected.

The following years were characterized by stunning free climbs in Yosemite and beyond, many with Beth Rodden, who he married in 2003, though they later divorced in 2009. During this time, their relationship and climbs were widely publicized in the climbing media. He sent some of the world’s toughest sport climbs, including a first ascent of Flex Luther (9b, 5.15b) at the Fortress of Solitude, Colorado. The climb, originally bolted by Nick Sagar in the ’90s, wouldn’t be repeated for 18 years until Matty Hong’s effort in 2021. Caldwell had said that Flex Luther, along with the Salathé Wall, were two routes he had made his personal mission to send after his accident.

He's widely admired for taking the free climbing approach to Yosemite’s big walls. In 2004, he sent what was then the hardest big wall free climb in Yosemite, Dihedral Wall, with Rodden and Adam Stack. This was followed by a prolific streak on the Nose in 2005, when he and Rodden pulled off the 3rd and 4th free climbs of the route. He returned twice in the space of a week, first climbing The Nose again in 12 hours and then again a few days later, knocking another hour off his time before descending and immediately free climbing Freerider, completing both in the space of 24 hours – an unprecedented achievement.

The Dawn Wall

Caldwell’s crowning glory came in 2015 when he and Kevin Jorgeson achieved what most had previously thought impossible, to free climb El Capitan’s Dawn Wall. It was the first ever big wall route at the 9a (5.14d) grade and took Caldwell and Jorgeson 19 days to unlock.

There are a number of aspects to the climb that make it utterly remarkable. Most climbs on El Capitan seek out lines of weakness in the granite wall, usually the great vertical cracks that run up its face. The Dawn Wall is different in that the route Caldwell put together doesn’t follow this rule, seeking out a purposefully difficult way up. Their success potentially opens up a new era of hugely challenging big wall climbing on Yosemite’s faces, where cracks are shunned for difficult and ingenious lines up the rock.

After the climb, National Geographic proclaimed: “It’s safe to say that it’ll be a long time before anyone repeats this rock climb,” paying tribute to the achievement. However, a year later, legendary Czech sport climber Adam Ondra free climbed the route in just eight days. He was quick to point out that the hard work had already been done by Caldwell and Jorgeson, saying, “I cannot really compare my effort to theirs.” The feat has not been repeated since.

Other adventures

As two of America’s elite climbers, Caldwell and Alex Honnold have teamed up on multiple projects, some in Yosemite and some further afield.

Having been introduced to climbing in Patagonia in 2006, Caldwell craved to return to Argentina to take on something really big. In 2014, he did just that. Along with Honnold, Caldwell earned the respect of the global mountaineering community and was awarded a prestigious Piolet d’Or for a stunning seven-peak traverse of the Fitz Roy massif in Patagonia. This feat had alluded mountaineers up until their attempt and their achievement was all the more startling given that both Caldwell and Honnold were not hugely experienced alpinists. Yet they managed to take their rock climbing and route-finding ability to make a successful five-day traverse. Their adventure was documented in A Line Across the Sky. Incidentally, Tommy and his second wife Rebecca named their first child Fitz in 2013, after the mountain.

Other adventures alongside Honnold included a ridiculously fast speed ascent of the Nose on El Cap, achieved in under two hours in 2018. To put the pace of the climb into some sort of context, it took Caldwell just 11 minutes to reach Sickle Ledge, a feature that most climbers take an entire day to attain. The timelapse below illustrates the sheer scale of the climb.

Caldwell and Honnold’s latest adventure took them 2,600 miles from Caldwell’s home in Colorado to the Devil’s Thumb on the British Columbia/Alaska border. They completed this journey by human power alone, cycling, kayaking and hiking to the base of the climb to champion environmental causes. Once arrived, they pulled off the first ever single-day traverse of the massif’s quintet of spires, taking less than 12 hours.

Patagonia, the all-conquering Californian outdoor brand, needs little introduction. As well as consistently producing excellent outdoor gear since it was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, it has led the way when it comes to sustainability, providing the example for other outdoor brands to follow. It’s been pledging at least 1% of its profits since 1985 and, in 2022, it made the pioneering move of donating all its non-voting stock to the Holdfast Collection, a non-profit at the vanguard of the fight against climate change. It’s this blend of sustainability and quality that puts Patagonia among the most expensive outdoor brands but also one of the most loved.

Patagonia has been selling its popular Black Hole bags since the ’90s and these days, true to form, the Black Hole is crafted from fully recycled polyester. As of 2023, 98% of the brand’s gear was made from recycled materials and it aims to eliminate its virgin polyester use entirely by 2025. The Black Hole's design is also in line with the brand’s focus on durability, which you’d expect for something designed to spend its life travelling, lugging heavy outdoor kit around and being thrown from pillar to post. It comes in a range of sizes and with wheeled options too.

I was lucky enough to test the 70L, non-wheeled version of the Black Hole courtesy of the wonderful people at Trekkit, UK outdoor gear specialists.

First impressions

The Black Hole comes stuffed into its own little storage sack, which then doubles up as an interior compartment. You can access it from outside and inside once the duffel is opened up – an impressive design feature. The fact that you can collapse the entire thing’s mass back into a much smaller space is also quite apt given that it’s called the Black Hole.

In similarly fitting fashion, I was testing the Matte Black version, which is totally devoid of color save for the green Patagonia text along its flanks. I used to work as a stage technician, often spending my evenings working backstage at an international concert hall. The Black Hole’s functional appearance, coupled with this lack of color, put me in mind of something that wouldn’t look amiss holding microphone stands, sat on top of a flight case.

This was my overriding first impression, one of no nonsense, tough-as-nails durability and functionality. It’s not particularly sexy, it’s not about bells and whistles, but it’s got a certain amount of cool about it. Anyone who’s watched Reservoir Dogs will know that, deep down, everyone wants to be Mr Black.

Meet the expert

Features

The fabric that bestows the Black Hole with its rugged durability is a weather- and abrasion-resistant polyester ripstop, topped by a matte TPU-film laminate. As mentioned, the materials used are recycled – the use of recycled TPU cuts the carbon emissions involved in the bag’s manufacture by 91% per kg, according to the brand.

The cavernous interior has a 70L capacity, ideal for long trips to the mountains, camping trips, family vacations or any other instance you’d need to haul or transport a load of gear. Its shape is ‘roughly’ compatible with Patagonia’s 14L Black Hole Cubes, which can be placed in the base of the pack, with room for more gear on top. However, I didn’t have the privilege of owning the Cubes to test this out.

I’ve already sang the praises of the side compartment, which is accessible from both the inside and out, as well as doubling up as the stuff sack. This is the most obvious dash of flair in what is otherwise a very safe but very accomplished design. The compartment is ideal for items you’d want convenient access to, whether it’s your toiletries on a long trip or your child’s fluffy penguin.

The main lid opens up on three sides in the usual U-shape, deploying chunky, hardwearing 2-way YKK zippers with fabric pulls for closure. The interior of the lid feature two zippered mesh pockets for other essentials. Think passports, travel documents, guidebooks and topo maps.

If you run out of room in the main compartment, sturdy daisy chains down either side provide the option to attach gear externally. They can also be put to use in those instances where you’d want to secure the bag down. At either end of the duffel are burly grab handles for two-person hauling or lifting, while there are the usual dual carry handles, fixed together in the middle with a reinforced sleeve with popper attachment. Neither the side grab handles nor the sleeve feature padding, which might have been a welcome addition.

The Black Hole can also be carried as a backpack, thanks to two removable, padded shoulder straps. These affix to buckles at one end and slot into plastic D-loops at the other. There’s no doubt that the ability to carry it as a backpack is a real boon in terms of comfort on longer carries.

Duffels have to cope with more than their fair share of rough handling and abuse. While you’d maybe think twice about sliding your best hiking backpack along the rough floor of a mountain hut, this is the kind of behavior that duffel’s have to put up with on a regular basis. So, the base of the bag is reinforced for increased abrasion resistance. It’s not advertised as being waterproof per se – it's labelled as water-resistant – so I was interested to see how it fended off the drink on test. More on this in a mo.

In the field

I’ve been using the Black Hole Duffel to haul kit to and from mountaineering meets across the UK, as well as using it as a handy pack for family weekends away from home.

As I’ve already alluded to, there’s nothing particularly fancy about the Black Hole, it just does it jobs very well and without a fuss. One of the beautiful things about its simplicity is that it’s been designed to be easily repairable, a quality that Patagonia has been putting lots of focus on in recent years with its product repair services. So, if I were to maul the Black Hole with my crampons, I’d have the option of getting it back to good as new, usually within a couple of months.

As promised, the bag provided good resistance against rain, particularly the reinforced lid and side panels, which causes water to bead and run off the surface. However, it's not totally waterproof so I wouldn't recommend leaving your kit out in a storm overnight.

I initially found freeing the duffel from its own stuff sack quite difficult, but it’s the kind of thing that just requires a little practice. Adding or removing the shoulder straps is much more of a doddle and the ‘R’ and ‘L’ labelling and matching straps couldn’t be much clearer.

Once on the shoulders, it’s a relatively comfortable carry – I say relatively because a duffel bag is never going to be in the same league as something designed to be carried all day. But, for getting the bag between the car and a hut or from the train to baggage check-in, it is relatively comfortable. The shoulder straps are nicely padded and, if when carrying a really heavy load, I could always tie the excess straps around my waist, taking the weight off my shoulders a little. This isn’t a design feature per se, but a helpful, unintended consequence.

The grab handles feel very solid and make it easy to lift the duffel from one place to another, though the poppers that secure the handle are a bit fiddly if you don’t get both straps aligned properly. There’s no padding to speak of on either of these, which would make longer hauls more comfortable – but then, that’s what the shoulder straps are for, so I can’t gripe too much with this. Speaking of solid, the main, chunky zippers feel as though they’ll last a lifetime and their pullers are easy to grab when wearing gloves.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: first impressions

Trying to find comfortable, well-fitting ski trousers can be awkward – especially when the winter thermostat can spike from -12°C / 10.4°F to a warm 7°C / 44.6°F with a wild mixture of winter conditions, wind and precipitation thrown in the mix.

Meet the Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants (you can also check out our Storm Shift jacket review), a surprisingly rugged, technical waterproof and windproof ski pants aimed at mountaineering and snow sports, and ideal for those looking for a go-to winter outer layer that dries quickly – in this case, by using a two-layer Gore-Tex system that helps wick moisture.

Indeed, if you’re looking for a well-fitting, snow-hopping women’s winter sport trouser for ski bunny adventures, then this might be the trouser for you.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: on the trails

I tried out the Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants on the Tröllaskagi Peninsula, a remote, often inaccessible location known as one of the jewels in the ski-touring crown of Iceland. I was lucky to have the chance to test the Storm Shift Pants on multiple occasions, on what felt like entirely different winter days with massive variations in temperatures and snow conditions.

No two winter days were the same, and accompanied by a wet, maritime climate subject to multiple snow storms, I needed a pair of hiking pants that were comfortable all day, and didn’t leave me feeling like I was wearing a pair of ‘rustly’ hardshell waterproof trousers.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: breathability and waterproofing

Patagonia’s waterproofing has always impressed me thanks to its quality construction. Using recycled polyester throughout the pants is a big deal – and by making a technical waterproof trouser with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish but without perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS), the brand suggests the future of performance ski kit. Technical pants should be able to withstand a level of weather resistance and deliver comfort without damaging the environment.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: comfort and fit

From top to bottom, the Storm Shift Pants are robust and comfortable to wear, thanks to several features that cleverly work together to release heat when needed, while keeping snow out on the downhill. It does this via articulated knees for mobility and agile turns, and mesh-lined thigh vents that quickly dump heat, without showing off an immodest amount of skin.

The liner was great at providing additional warmth, so on days where the thermostat hovered around 0°C / 32°F, I didn’t need to wear a Merino base layer as the trousers were able to wick moisture away to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Part of the appeal of the Storm Shift Pants is that they’ve been designed with ‘rider’s movement in mind’, meaning the cut has just enough flexibility for both uphill strides and downhill movement.

One of the key elements that can affect wearability is the waist adjustment. Getting to and from the slopes meant wearing merino layers in the car before putting my outer trousers for the drive over, which sometimes felt a bit uncomfortable if I was sat down for long periods of time.

The Storm Shift pants do have some adjustable sizing such an adjustable, lined waistband with a brushed tricot lining that wicks moisture, adjustable black elastic tabs that customize fit, a two-snap closure and a zip fly, so it’s very easy to make some small adjustments, but some people may prefer to go up a size for more give. I tested a size 6 (UK size 10) and these Storm Shift trousers noticeably worked more as a slim fit. For greater comfort, it should be noted that if you buy ‘true to size’ there’s not lots of room to wear bulky underlayers with these trousers, due to the thickness of the outer material.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: protection

The Patagonia Storm Shift Pants boast some more technical features to protect against the elements. For conditions such as skinning uphill or hiking that require dumping of heat, the leg vents have long, easy-to-use zippers that are ski glove friendly to help with temperature management.

For when the weather starts to hit, the Patagonia Storm Shift Pants have easily adjustable watertight zippers that are coated to keep the water out. And for protection when descending in deep snow or slushy conditions, the trousers offer some protection against moisture getting in.

A webbing loop on the rear yoke of the waistband that helps attach pants to the powder gasket on any Patagonia snow jacket (it’s like a kind of giant gaiter that stops snow accidentally sliding down your back). While this is only really an issue when you’re skiing in deep powder snow, it’s helpful to know that other features such as the high-rise waistband can prevent the trousers from sliding down when you’re skinning up the hill. They can also take a belt.

Rugged built-in gaiters easily slide over the ski boot without being an extra faff to adjust. However, my favorite snow protection feature must be the tough scuff guards, which have been designed in an aesthetically pleasing accent shade of the main trousers. These add durability and rigidity to the Storm Shift Pants, preventing snow getting in while also protecting the bottom hem.

Finally, a nod to a pair of ski trousers with multiple, user-friendly pockets! As with the Storm Shift Jacket, the multi-use pockets are located throughout the pants – two zippered handwarmer pockets and two zippered main pockets help secure items without the fear they might accidentally fall out. The only thing I’d like to have seen improved would have been a slightly deeper map pocket to accommodate a bigger phone and/or additional items such as a battery pack, as this is usually my go-to pocket for accessing technology or useful items. A RECCO reflector located in the jacket gives an extra layer of security, making it easier to pick up by avalanche transceivers.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: durability

The Patagonia Storm Shift pants were tested for two months, and while I found them resistant to scuffs and usage, the lighter teal color meant mud was easily visible. I liked the webbing toggles, and the denier of the trousers felt like it was going to last and be resistant to scuffs compared to other trousers I’ve tested.

With this being a Patagonia product, it should come as no surprise that it has glowing eco credentials, made in a factory that supports workers’ rights and fair trade practices. Both the shell and the lining have been made with recycled polyester, while the outer shell fabric is bluesign approved and made without harmful per fluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS.) It’s a great step forwards to see Patagonia embrace recycled materials throughout their whole range and a delight to see them withstanding the same levels of testing without causing damage to the environment through the manufacturing process.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket: first impressions

If you’ve dipped your toes into many different winter sports, then you’ll know that, while it’s a nice idea to have a jacket that covers all activities, trying to find one that can be used across different disciplines is tricky. The Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket is a breathable hard shell with a fleece lining, aimed at adventurous folk who aren’t afraid to venture out in less than perfect snowy conditions – which could be ice climbers, ski tourers, mountaineers and walkers.

I tested the Shift while ski-touring in varying temperatures that ranged from a nippy -12°C / 10.4°F to a mild 7°C / 44.6°F, and experienced a wild mix of winter conditions. Ultimately, the main reason you’d look at the Storm Shift is if you’re keen on winter sports and looking for a tough Gore-Tex jacket with an incredible warmth-to-weight ratio that helps wick moisture and dries quickly.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket: in the field

Patagonia’s waterproof garments have always impressed me thanks to their quality construction and fit. The Storm Shift is robust and comfortable to wear as an all-day layer, made with a two-layer 100% recycled polyester Gore-Tex fabric. Using recycled polyester throughout the jacket is a big deal, while a waterproof jacket made without perfluorochemicals in the fabrics – as well as providing a durable water repellent (DWR) finish – proves that technical jackets needn’t be made at the expense of the environment. It also shows that ski jackets can be made to withstand a level of weather and water resistance whilst also being comfortable to wear for long periods of time. A unique liner (in a fuzzy zig-zag pattern) may look not much to begin with, yet I found it was surprisingly warm and able to wick moisture to provide lasting storm protection.

The Storm Shift Jacket was tested for around a month, and I found that it was resistant to scuffs and usage, although the color meant mud was easily visible. I liked the webbing toggles, and these felt like they were going to last rather than rip off as on cheaper jackets I’ve tested.

The Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket has some slightly more technical features that protect against the elements. For conditions such as skinning uphill or hiking that require dumping of heat, the pit zips have watertight, coated zippers and keep you from overheating.

For when the weather starts to hit, the Storm Shift has easily adjustable low-profile cuffs that can be secured over or under gloves to stop snow and moisture from getting in. A helmet-compatible hood is roomy enough to accommodate a bulky ski helmet, and has a laminated visor to help keep the weather out. I found the tall collar needed a bit more room to help zip up to the top of the neck and over the face, though, as this felt like it was too narrow to do right to the top.

When descending in deep snow or slushy conditions, the Storm Shift has some protection to guard against moisture getting in. Inside the jacket, a powder gasket can be cinched in or laid flat when not in use, and a webbing loop means it is compatible with any Patagonia snow pants to stop snow sneaking its way down the back. This only really applies when you’re skiing in deep powder snow, though. A nifty little drawcord hem is easily adjusted in the inside pocket, which helps cinch the wider jacket for narrower frames. Two poppers (located in the front and the back) also protect against snow coming in.

A RECCO reflector located in the jacket gives an extra layer of security making it easier for avalanche transceivers to pick up.

A nod to a jacket with multiple pockets! Multi-use pockets are located throughout the Storm Shift – two zippered handwarmer pockets, a zippered chest pocket, zippered forearm pocket, interior zippered pocket and an interior drop-in pocket provide ample room for snacks, phone, map and tissues. The only thing I’d like to have seen improved would have been a slightly deeper chest pocket to accommodate a bigger phone and/or additional items, as this is usually my go-to spot for accessing technology or useful items.

It’s worth noting the Patagonia Storm Shift is slightly wider than a ‘typical’ jacket I’ve owned, with a wider cut at the hip, and enough material around the shoulders to move my arms. Designed to complement a rider’s natural movement, the Storm Shift is meant to be big enough to move around without the jacket riding up. I tested and wore a size medium jacket, which I think is true to size, as I wanted to have a jacket I could wear layers underneath.

As a Patagonia jacket, it should come as no surprise that the Storm Shift has glowing eco credentials, made in a factory that supports workers’ rights and ensures a fair trade has taken place. Both the shell and the lining have been made with recycled polyester, while the outer shell fabric is bluesign approved and made without harmful perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS.) It’s a great step forwards to see Patagonia embrace recycled materials throughout its whole range and a delight to see garments withstanding the same levels of testing without causing damage to the environment through the manufacturing process.

Patagonia Women’s R1 CrossStrata Hoody: first impressions

Mountain weather can vary, and when the seasons seem to change so unexpectedly, so too should your layering system – which makes the Patagonia Women’s R1 CrossStrata Hoody arguably an ideal hybrid that’s well suited to the UK’s ever-changing wet, cold and drizzly climate.

One might be tempted to wonder, though, if the R1 CrossStrata Hoody is a bit of a zebra crossed with a donkey? Is it more of a fleece, more of a jacket, or both? If we’re rooting for it to be Team Zebra – aka fleece – then as a mid layer you’d be tempted to wear it underneath an outer shell to keep really warm and cosy, but there are arguably different weights of fleeces in the Patagonia range that would have more oomph as a standalone insulator. Or if you’re more Team Donkey – aka a jacket – then it’s arguably more so thanks to its accessible, useful pockets, its water repellent treatment and its features such as a hood and a drop-in pocket with button closure.

If you’re happy to be in Team Zedonk, then the R1 CrossStrata Hoody is a hybrid performance mid layer with versatile heat retaining and shedding properties that can be worn as an outer, which also performs really well in the UK’s ever changeable mountain climate.

Patagonia’s eco credentials help make this jacket stand out. Bluesign approval means that the fabric has been manufactured in a factory without producing harmful substances at each step of the supply chain, so it is certified as safe for the environment, workers and customers. Patagonia items are also Fairtrade certified, meaning a better deal for workers involved in their manufacture.

The durable water repellent (DWR) finish is made without the use of harmful per fluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS), meaning at every stage the jacket has been made with consideration for the overall sustainability of the manufacturing process. The jacket is also made with 90% recycled polyester.

Feature wise, I particularly liked the fit and construction of the cuffs on the arms, the elasticised hood and hem. This low-profile design made sure the jacket felt more ‘fitted’ without the unnecessary addition of too many bulky toggles or pull cords flapping around in the wind. It was also good to note that a helmet can be worn with the hood up.

When it comes to warmth-to-weight ratio, the Patagonia Women’s R1 CrossStrata Hoody was warm enough to trap some heat without being too heavyweight, thanks to the double weave construction and unique zig-zag texture that feels soft and warm next to the skin.

The outer fabric has a DWR treatment so water can bead off, meaning that if you were hiking uphill and suddenly needed a bit of extra insulation on the move it would be ideal. I tested the R1 CrossStrata Hoody on a particularly dreich day, where it was neither dry nor wet and the mountain weather loomed over Buttermere in England’s Lake District. A light drizzle was visible on my backpack, so it was the perfect weather to test the water repellence of the hoody, which managed to stop the water from soaking into my mid layers. I also found the hoody was great at resisting odd showers, giving me time to reach in for a waterproof jacket when the weather started to turn to proper rain.

I did have to size the layering up to a medium as I wear a size 10-12 and found the small version of the jacket was a lot smaller than expected and came up a much slimmer fit than I liked. 

One of my favourite qualities of the R1 CrossStrata Hoody though was the mobility in the jacket. Thanks to just the right combination of stretch fabric, it allowed me to move my arms and make sure I had protection across the shoulders and upper body without the jacket riding up. This makes it a highly versatile jacket for alpine climbing – for instance when the wind is blowing getting ready for a multi pitch rock climb, or when an extra layer helps standing in the shade of a sport climb.
