With the warmer weather and favorable conditions of summer finally here, climbers from across the nation are preparing to strap on their crampons and head up America's tallest mountain.

Dozens of climbers have already scaled Alaska’s Denali mountain, otherwise known as Mount McKinley, and more than 1,000 have registered to make the ascent in the coming months.

The best time to tackle the 20,310ft (6,190m) mountain is generally considered to be between mid-May and early July, when warmer temperatures and reduced wind provide the best conditions for climbing.

Even in the peak season, climbers face a harrowing journey to the summit and have to overcome steep ice climbing sections and highly crevassed glacier travel. There are also multiple geo-hazardous risks, including the potential for violent landslides, rockfalls, and earthquakes. Avalanches alone have killed more than 40 people on the mountain in the past 50 years.

Among those on Denali so far this season was American skier Anna Demonte, who became the fastest woman to ski the 15,766ft (4,806m) Mont Blanc mountain this time last year.

Demonte was attempting to break the women's fastest known time (FKT) skiing record of 7 hours and 29 minutes, but was forced to abandon her attempt after suffering a knee injury just above base camp. She fell at about 16,404ft (5,000m) and tore her MCL (medial collateral ligament), making it impossible to continue the attempt.

America's tallest mountain was the subject of controversy earlier this year, when newly elected President Trump reversed an order that recognized its indigenous name, Denali, in favor of its previous official moniker, Mount McKinley.

The peak was named in 1896 after then-President-elect William McKinley, who never visited his namesake or even the state of Alaska, nor did he have any cultural connection to the area.

President Barack Obama changed the name from Mount McKinley to Denali in 2015 after more than 40 years of campaigning by Native Alaskans, who say the name Denali has been in use for more than 10,000 years.

Recognizing the previous name was one of President Trump's first actions in office, and spurred widespread criticism from the Alaskan community.

The mountain is now officially known as McKinley in the US, but other countries aren't obliged to recognize the new name.

“I strongly disagree with the President’s decision on Denali,” said Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski at the time in a post on X.

“Our nation’s tallest mountain, which has been called Denali for thousands of years, must continue to be known by the rightful name bestowed by Alaska’s Koyukon Athabascans, who have stewarded the land since time immemorial.”

Skiers taking part in the prestigious Mezzalama Trophy ski-mountaineering race received the fright of their lives when a small passenger plane dived towards them and narrowly avoided a collision.

A video captured by alpinist Luca Calzone shows the small aircraft landing on the Sesia Pass section of the 15,203ft (4,634m) Monte Rosa Massif before taking an unexpected turn and bombing through a line of skiers just before it took off again.

No one was injured in the incident.

The pilot, who could potentially be held criminally responsible and lose his license, is now under investigation by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA).

A FOCA spokesperson told the Keystone-ATS news agency that it had opened proceedings to "clarify the facts and take appropriate measures."

The pilot has since apologized to skiers and fellow pilots for what he describes as a "serious error of judgement."

In a letter published by Italian and Swiss media, the unnamed pilot said: “I am deeply sorry for the community that I love more than anything else. I hope this never happens to any of you."

The Geneva Aéroclub, which owns the aircraft, has confirmed that the pilot reported the incident to authorities on the same day.

The Mezzalama Trophy is the third-highest ski-mountaineering race in the world. It pits 1,000 of the world's best racers against each other over 28 miles (45km) of unforgiving mountain terrain.

Skiers gain more than 10,738ft (3,272m) of total elevation and tackle precarious ridges, ice climbs, and descents as they cross the Monte Rosa massif. The event is part of the annual ISMF Long Distance World Cup, which decides the world's best ski-mountaineers.

Outdoor brand Kathmandu says it wants to push sustainability boundaries and create kits that "act like an extension of the athletes themselves," as it supplies New Zealand's Olympic gear for the next two games.

Kiwi athletes will be suiting up in Kathmandu kit in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. They'll also supply the kit for the team's 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Olympic Youth Games in Dakar - also in 2026.

"Our innovative and responsibly-made gear and apparel will empower our country’s elite athletes to excel, perform at their best, and proudly fly the New Zealand flag on the global stage," said CEO Megan Welch.

Kathmandu prides itself on the use of sustainable, environmentally responsible materials, a tradition it's keen to keep up with the latest Kiwi kits.

“Our product team has a long history of pushing industry boundaries – particularly when it comes to sustainability and innovation," continued Welch.

"In the 1990s, they were one of the first to develop a fleece made from plastic bottles. Now we’re creating world-leading, high-performance garments using fabrics made with recycled car tyres and captured carbon emissions."

Kathmandu has made significant strides towards sustainable production in the past decade.

The brand, which hails from New Zealand itself, uses recycled down and polyester materials in multiple garments and has even opened an entirely solar-powered store in Victoria, Australia.

New Zealand Olympic Committee CEO Nicki Nicol said: "New Zealanders care deeply about where their products come from and how they’re made – we now have a leader in sustainable product innovation backing our team."

Kathmandu is best known for creating sturdy hiking and trail running gear.

Despite Trump’s surprise 90-day pause on a great deal of his April 2-announced tariffs, it seems inevitable that we’re going to be shelling out more at the checkouts for our favorite outdoor items.

The threat of trade war alone has created huge uncertainty for businesses around the world, destabilizing prices, and the 10% universal duty remains in place, which they are already having to absorb.

Much of the manufacturing of clothes and equipment from our favourite brands takes place in Asia in countries such as China, which is facing a 125% tariff, and in Cambodia and Vietnam, both originally threatened with 49% tariffs.

The US Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) has said that these tariffs will hurt American businesses, workers and consumers. The number of Americans taking part in outdoor activity is at an all-time high, it revealed, with 175.8 million participating last year.

“These tariffs will raise costs for American manufacturers, retailers and families,” says Kent Ebersole, president of OIA.

“That’s going to slow growth, put pressure on small and mid-sized outdoor companies and could force some to close their doors. These tariffs also make it more difficult for global outdoor brands to operate in the US and maintain their American workforce.”

For brands such as Black Diamond and Columbia Sportswear, whose share prices have dropped as a result of these tariff increases, the situation is challenging. The higher tariffs raise their cost base, which makes it harder to maintain profit margins.

Logistics expert Will Kogan explains: “As publicly traded companies, any price hikes or shrinking profit margins directly affect their stock market performance. This has led to investor concerns, reflected in the decline in share prices. The challenge for these companies now is finding a balance between raising prices and maintaining their customer base.

"For US consumers, the effects of these price hikes are becoming increasingly apparent. For high-end brands like Yeti, this could impact demand, as consumers might start to opt for more affordable alternatives, especially in a time of economic uncertainty."

When will the price of gear rise?

Savvy brands have been trying to stay one step ahead of the looming tariffs, importing as much product as they could before April. Imports have been high since summer 2024, the US National Retail Federation has revealed.

“Retailers have been bringing merchandise into the country for months in attempts to mitigate against rising tariffs, but that opportunity has come to an end with the imposition of the ‘reciprocal’ tariffs,” US National Retail Federation spokesperson Jonathan Gold said.

Damon Street from Twist Distribution, EU distributor of Exell Outdoors, which owns brands such as Sierra Designs and Kelty, agrees that businesses have been preparing for these tariffs long before April 2.

"They have probably already been through two waves of pricing," he says.

However, he describes Trump’s latest 90-day pause as a “lifeline”. It will give companies a chance to manufacture and deliver on orders already placed and time to plan for the future.

How will brands absorb these costs?

Street explains that at this time of year, as brands get ready to present next year's spring/summer product at trade shows, they usually have pricing cemented. However, with the economic uncertainty, they are still working it out.

He predicts that they are likely to protect key products while pushing costs onto "accessories".

“Brands are having to look at what are the key products they need, the things that define their brands, and maintain performance there.

For Exell it's their sleeping bags, backpacks and tents. For Kelty, our best-seller is the Tru.Comfort Doublewide two-person sleeping bag. We will make sure this is hitting the right price point going forwards. Perhaps we will have to remove focus from other accessories, the things that are 'nice' to have," he explains.

Businesses are also considering manufacturing long-term. At Excell they have built a factory in Alabama where they can manufacture sleeping bags. However, it's not going to be a quick solution.

"We can switch on manufacturing there," Street says. "But where the products are currently being made, the quality is A1. To replicate the volumes and the quality is going to be a big ask."

Will gear cost less in Europe than the US?

One interesting development is that we may see global pricing disparity, Street predicts.

“At Exell, we have always maintained a global pricing policy. A £100 product in the UK might sell at €115 in the EU and $125 in the US. The brand price is roughly aligned, similar to Nike or Adidas products. The brand price is roughly the same whether you buy it in London, Munich or New York. This may be affected as realistically each territory will have to look at what they need for their own markets and find the right price point."

The end of store discounts?

Further down the supply chain, Street believes retailers will have to reconsider pricing too, which the consumer will probably notice over the coming months.

"As new deliveries arrive with higher-priced product, retailers can blend the price, and get a blended margin that won’t be too bad. However, as they run out of older stock that was bought in at the right price, the margin will be hard to hold without significant price increases.

He believes initially retailers will have to stop discounting products to keep their profit margins and sell at the RRP.

Ultimately, he says the consumer will have to make a choice to spend more or buy from cheaper brands.

Extend the life of your gear

With prices set to hike, it’s more beneficial than ever to takes steps to make your gear last longer.

• Invest in quality – paying more for well-made and durable gear is more financially sound that investing in budget-friendly options, which can be false economy. If you don’t have funds to lay out for brand new gear, consider buying used gear. There’s advice in our article How to shop for second hand outdoor gear.
• Look after your clothes – keep them clean and wash with Nikwax, or unscented detergent, after every few uses. Always store gear clean and dry. Repair tears, and if you can't yourself, employ someone who can.
• Reproof outer layers – when water starts to breach jackets and trousers, use a DWR product to make them waterproof again. There’s helpful advice in How to waterproof a jacket.
• Repair gear – there are amazing gear-repair companies out there who will bring your tired clothes and equipment back to life, especially if the item has a lifetime warranty. Whether it’s replacing a broken backpack zip or washing a filthy sleeping bag, there may be someone out there who can do it at a fair price.

Have you ever been to Courmayeur? The Italian town enjoys a spectacular setting, at the foot of arguably Mont Blanc’s most impressive side, with the intimidating black tower of Aiguille Noire clawing at the sky towards the white dome of Western Europe’s highest mountain. It was in Courmayeur, 1909, that English intellectual and mountaineer Oscar Eckenstein handed his drawing of the original crampon design to a local blacksmith. The blacksmith’s name was Henri Grivel.

Fast forward over a century and Grivel’s name is still the most famous name in crampon manufacture, especially in Europe. In the intervening years, Henri’s son Laurent went on to invent front points in 1929, an innovation without which there’d be no ice climbing. Then, in 2003, the brand solved the issue of snow build up between the spikes with its anti-balling plates. Grivel continues to be at the forefront of crampon design to this day.

Crampons tend to have either 10 or 12 points, with 10 points suited to winter walking and glacier travel and 12 points geared towards more technical mountaineering, alpinism and ice climbing. When it comes to 12-point crampons, Grivel’s G12 is the benchmark, with a formidable reputation and popularity across the world. This tried and tested classic tops our best crampons buying guide at the time of writing, while the brand champion it as the “king of crampons”.

However, it’s not the only 12-point device the brand offer. Enter the Air Tech, a lighter option for mountaineering adventures that’s available with multiple binding systems. I tested the New-Matic EVO version of this superb traction device.

First impressions

To the uninitiated, there wouldn’t appear to be a huge difference between the Air Tech and the G12. However, as soon as you start studying the spikes, the differences are obvious. The G12 features long, sharp daggers at the front and serrated blades at the back; whereas, aside from the similar front points, the Air Tech’s teeth are shorter and serrated.

While I’ve used the G12 before, my previous main pair of crampons were the Black Diamond Seracs, another popular choice among 12-point devices. With a similar price and weight to the Air Techs, they make for a good comparison. The front points on the Air Tech are noticeably more aggressive, as are the serrated spikes further back too. I was intruiged to see how performance would differ in the winter backcountry.

Fitting the Air Techs was a doddle, though the New-Matics use the same style of binding system as my previous Seracs, so I was already well-practised.

Meet the reviewer

Features

The Air Tech New-Matic is a C2 crampon, which means it fits B2 winter hiking boots, such as the Scarpa Manta Tech GTX and the La Sportiva Trango Tower GTX. The binding system comprises a plastic heel clip that snaps into place on the boot’s heel welt and a plastic toe basket that wraps around the front of the boot. This is then all brought together by threading the tether strap through the toe binding and back to the heel clip, before tightening it all up.

C2 crampons come in two halves that are connected by the flex bar (sometimes called the center bar) which is slightly curved towards the big toe. The flex bar has slots along its length, a bit like a belt, allowing you to adjust the overall length of the crampon to properly fit your boot of choice.

In terms of spike layout, the Air Tech is fairly standard for a 12-point device. There’s two sharp horizontal front point daggers for hold on the steeper snow and ice during more technical mountaineering missions. Between here and the midfoot are six triangular spikes, smooth on their front side and serrated with semi-circular indents on their back. The front four of these are sharpened to a point, whereas the back two are flattened.

Grivel use Nickel-Crome Molybdenum Steel for the spikes. The nickel chromium and molybdenum alloys are added in precise percentages to give the resulting steel alloy both its toughness and its ability to perform in low temperatures. This has two advantages over standard stainless steel. One, the spikes maintain their sharpness for much longer and, two, when stainless steel is processed, it can lead to tiny cracks forming. This can lead to durability issues further down the line, not what one needs when hundreds of meters up in a remote gully.

As mentioned, Grivel introduced the anti-ball (or antibott) plate to the world in 2003, solving the issue of dangerous snow built up between the spikes. These are the two rubbery, dome shaped bulges, bearing the brand’s name, on the underside of the device. They compress with each step and spring back out to shed snow from between the points – ingenious.

For those wanting even less weight on their feet, Grivel also sell the Air Tech Light, which weighs in at an impressive 556g (1.2 lbs) – a significant weight saving. The Light version makes use of aluminium rather than steel and are perfect for those who want move across glaciers and up snow slopes at speed, though rocky terrain is liable to wear them out faster than their steel counterparts.

I was testing the New-Matic EVO version of the Air Techs, which is a classic C2 crampon featuring a heel clip at the back and a basket at the front. Other options include the New-Classic EVO, which features a basket at the back and front, making it compatible with a wider range of winter boots. Then, there's the Cramp-O-Matic EVO and Dual-Matic EVO fittings, with heel clips and metal toe bails for a secure fit to a B3 boot.

On the hill

So far, I've tested the Air Techs in the wintry fells of England's Lake District and South Wales' Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), mixing easy winter walking with ascents of steeper slopes and gullies. As I expected, the Air Techs were well within their comfort zone and they were a pleasure to wear everytime I liberated them from their crampon bag.

If you've put crampons on before, fitting the Air Techs will be straightforward enough. If you need to tinker with the fit, there are plenty of customization options, including the option of moving the heel bar up and down on its clip by slotting it into the different grooves. This was admittedly a bit of a fiddly process but the option of tailoring the clip precisely to a boot's welt is a welcome one. The plastic in the heel binding is super durable – developed for use in ski bindings – which is a good thing as the process of clipping in places plenty of strain on these little components.

These are some of the lightest 12-point crampons around. At 832g (1.8lbs) per pair, they sneak under the weight of something like the Petzl Vasak and are noticeably lighter than the G12s. I've combined them with both the Aku Tengu and the Salewa Ortles Edge boots and they were secure throughout and allowed me to move comfortably with a little more speed than heavier crampons.

So, for winter walking, the Air Techs are ideal. This is especially true on the kind of ridge traverses where you find yourself on firm snow one minute and then rock the next. I found that the short spikes feel more stable on rock than crampons with longer points do.

While the spikes aren't as aggressive as some, they still provide all the traction one could wish for on low-grade mountaineering terrain and easy ice. The front spikes hold beautifully when front pointing and are nice and precise when perched on rock edges during mixed climbs. It's hard to say where the Air Techs would meet their limit when it comes to technicality, though general consensus is that you'd be safer in C3 crampons once you get into the realms of ice climbing and tougher mountaineering.

Grivel's tried-and-true antibott design works beautifully at stopping snow from building up between the spikes. The plates are durable too, though if they do begin to wear out, you can always get Grivel to fit a replacement.

When it comes to stashing the crampons away, they collapse down into a small and compact unit. I measured the bundle at 28 x 9 x 11 cms.

So far, I've been impressed with the lightweight versatility of the Air Techs and I look forward to many more snowy adventures in them in the future. Compared to my previous Seracs, performance levels are similar when subjected to the kind of low-grade mountaineering I tend to do, though the Air Techs are that little bit lighter.

Some outdoor brands run through styles quicker than the rest of us change our wool hiking socks, but Patagonia knows when it's onto a good thing. The iconic California-based has recently updated one of its most popular fleece styles, the light and packable R1.

When we reviewed the Patagonia R1 CrossStrata Hoody last year, we gave it nearly perfect marks for warmth, breathability and protection against the wind – something that's often missing in fleece jackets. This wildly versatile mid layer will keep the chill off, but it's effective enough to dump heat out when moving uphill, and the only minor grip we had was the lack of thumb holes, which let's face it aren't for anyone.

But in its never-ending quest for perfection, Patagonia has given the classic fleece a modern update that it says has been "designed with input from thousands of climbing hours."

What's new?

The new-and-improved R1 is no longer made from the Jacquard material that gives it that distinctive zigzag texture; instead, the brand has harnessed the super powers of Polartec Power Grid fleece fabric (the same stuff used in the awesome North Face Bolt) which is hybridized with its proprietary Capilene Thermal Weight base layer material. That's a mouthful, but what does it mean?

Basically, the new R1 is outstandingly stretchy and durable, making this technical fleece an all-rounder for hiking, climbing and skiing. The Capilene fabric is used under the arms for extra venting when you get warm, and the material is treated with HeiQ Pure odor control which means you get more wear out of every wash and a longer-lasting fleece.

All that stretch also means that the fit is more flattering, but doesn't inhibit your ability to reach your arms overhead when you're scrambling or climbing.

Buff Original EcoStretch Neckwear: first impressions 

Buff founder Joan Rojas created the iconic tubular neckwear to keep himself warm on chilly motorcycle runs. It became a smash hit and now the Barcelona-based brand has built a reputation as a leader for neck and head gear, so we figured it was high time we test out one of its legendary neck gaiters.

The Buff EcoStretch Original Neckwear is deceptively simple. It looks just like a tube of fabric, but take it outdoors and you'll never run out of ways to use it. We took this it to the ski slopes of Chamonix this winter where it provided an excellent barrier against the cold in the gap between ski jacket and goggles, and also some much-needed sun protection.

Buttery soft, this neck feels great against the skin and even though it looks like it's a single layer of fabric, it's constructed with an inner band designed to wick moisture. That makes it much more technical than you might think and it's great for handling both sweat and moisture from your breath without feeling soggy at the end of the day.

For brighter days, it offers UPF 50 sun protection that meets the criteria set by the Skin Cancer Foundation so it's worth carrying on any hike or trail run in case you need an extra shield. Unrolled, it's nearly two feet long so you can wear it in any number of ways, from round your neck to a head wrap or a ski mask, but it's light enough that it's not annoying when you want to tuck it away.

Best of all, in our opinion anyway, this Buff is made using 95 percent recycled plastic bottles, so it's better for the planet as well as your adventures.

Buff Original EcoStretch Neckwear: in the field 

I live in a household full of permanent neck gaiter-wearers so there's always one kicking around if I need it, but I never really had my own until a couple of years ago when I got a Helly Hansen Unisex merino neck gaiter for a ski trip to Verbier.

Being made from merino, it's really warm and excellent for skiing and winter hiking, but it's too warm for summer adventures, so I was curious about trying a synthetic one and I know Buff has the best reputation in the business for these tubes of endless protection.

I got the Original EcoStretch just in time for a ski trip to Chamonix where I wore it in whiteout conditions, bluebird days and even during some trail running.

Here's how it performed:

Size, fit and comfort

This is a one-size-fits-all piece of gear and while I haven't exactly walked around pulling it over people's heads, I'm pretty sure it's stretchy enough to work for anyone and it stays up if I want it to cover my face without slipping down or feeling tight.

It's quite big so it offers fantastic coverage, which is great for keeping a chill out, but it's also reinforced with UPF 50 sun protection. It rolls up small enough to carry in the palm of your hand, so it's really a great shield against most conditions and there's no reason not to bring it as part of your regular kit for any adventure.

Compared to some other neck gaiters I've worn, it's easily the most comfortable, with really soft fabric that just feels lovely against my skin.

Moisture management, breathability and protection

I wasn't sure how much I could write about a neck gaiter; after all, it's just a tube of fabric. But when I got to testing it and thinking about it, I realized how easily the wrong gaiter can ruin your day, especially for skiing.

I personally like to protect myself from the cold, preferring to leave no skin exposed as the frost has bitten me in the past, so for skiing, I pull this all the way up to my goggles. As I've learned in the past, if it's not breathable that's a problem as condensation starts building up and I end up skiing with a damp, or frozen, rag over my face. Not fun.

The fabric used for this gaiter seems really breathable and never gets soggy, plus I've worn it over my head for a couple of trail runs and I love how it keeps the chill off while still letting sweat escape so I don't overheat the way I often do with a hat or wool headband.

Versatility, durability and value

I think all neck gaiters are pretty versatile (in fact, we have a whole article on different uses for a neck gaiter), but it strikes me that to be really multi-functional, they need to be both stretchy enough and long enough. This one is nearly two feet long and has enough elastane that it probably works for all variations, though I basically just stick with round my neck, covering my face or a head wrap.

I haven't been wearing this one very long to test its durability, and I'm aware that neck gaiters can need a lot of washing, so time will tell if it holds up. I imagine the main issue will be the loss of stretch at some point, but it doesn't have an excessive amount so I'm hoping that's years in the future (and fortunately, there are plenty of ways to upcycle neck gaiters into household rags and goggle wipes).

I expected this to be on the pricey end since Buff has such a great name, but when I compared it against other neck gaiters at REI I was pleased to discover it's actually on the affordable end. Of course, it doesn't have thermal properties like a wool one, but I found it gave me enough protection even in a blizzard and it's more versatile.

Buff Original EcoStretch Neckwear: the bottom line 

Depending on your use, neck gaiters don't have to require in-depth comparisons, but if you're looking for something that's technical (meaning, it actually manages moisture), really soft and planet-friendly, you'll love this one. My only complaint is that my boyfriend has stolen it.

Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated Ski Pants: first impressions

Calling any piece of kit "legendary" is a bold move, but we have to admit we're pretty impressed with these ski pants from Helly Hansen. The bestselling Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated ski pants have enough Primaloft insulation to keep you warm in sub-zero temps (over thermals, that is) but they're not bulky at all.

They're made from a soft, comfortable shell material that's not too swishy when you're walking from the parking lot to the gondola and will keep the wind and wet snow at back.

With lots of stretch, articulated knees and opportunities to adjust the waistband, it's easy to find a really comfortable and flattering fit with these pants where you can walk, ski and adjust your bindings. They're not loose and baggy, but there's still plenty of room for layering and, remarkably, they're really easy to fit over ski boots even without ankle zips.

Worn without thermals, it's quickly clear that these pants could be more breathable, but that's not something you're likely to notice when you're skiing with base layers, and if you do, they have inner thigh zips for cooling off.

Even though they're soft and light to the touch, the ankle/calf area is reinforced so the area that comes most into contact with your ski boots and skis is protected, meaning they're more rugged than they appear.

Four zipped pockets are adequate for stashing gear, though for ski pants we tend to find a thigh pocket is handier for a phone, but let's be honest, most gear is going in your ski jacket pockets anyway. We're glad to see that these pants are Bluesign-approved and for such a versatile and high-performing piece of kit think they're quite reasonably priced, too.

Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated Ski Pants: in the field

After a couple of seasons of skiing in the Helly Hansen Powderqueen Bibs, it was time for me to test something new so I brought these ski pants along for a five-day trip to Chamonix where I got to ski all five ski areas in whiteout conditions and bluebird days.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I’ve been testing a women’s small which is my normal size and while a lot of ski pants (and Helly Hansen pants) tend to run a bit big on me, I'm happy to report that these are perfect and fit true to size.

When I first pulled them on, I was a bit worried they were too big around the waist which meant the knees were in the wrong place, but I quickly discovered two hook-and-loop pull tabs that cinch the waist tighter (there are also belt loops if you need them) and that solved the issue.

They're not loose and baggy at all but are soft and tailored so that I can move freely in them and easily plop down in the snow to watch a ski racing competition thanks to the added stretch. They're really comfortable which isn't always the case with ski pants. I don't quite understand how they've done it, but even though there aren't any zips on the ankles they still fit really easily over my ski boots without appearing loose.

Weather protection and breathability 

These pants use Helly Hansen's proprietary Helly Tech Performance waterproof membrane instead of Gore-Tex and they're built to be waterproof, windproof and warm but also breathable. That's a tall order.

Luckily, I've been able to test them in pretty cold weather, one whiteout and in mild, sunny conditions to see how they hold up across the board. For skiing, I've always worn them with a pair of merino wool long underwear underneath them and they've always been warm enough. On the mildest day, I did unzip the thigh vents which let me stay comfortable, and they're treated with DWR which so far has been able to handle all moisture though I expect it will need to be reapplied at some point.

As for breathability, I've never had any issue on milder days thanks in part to the ventilation zips, but I must say that I threw them on without Long Johns to go down for breakfast at the hotel one morning and that did reveal to me that their breathability may be somewhat lacking.

Honestly, I'd never wear these for alpine skiing without an underlayer, but if you tend to ski without thermals it may be good for you to know. As I said, I was indoors in a heated space, and I don't think it would be an issue for alpine skiing, but it might present a slight problem for ski touring.

Weight, packability and storage

When compared to other ski pants we’ve tested, these are midweight at around 540 grams for women's and they definitely don't feel heavy on. For packing, I had a checked bag for the trip but I still wanted to travel light on transfers so I used my Fjallraven High Coast Duffel 36. I was able to roll these up to about the size of a Nalgene and they packed away neatly.

These pants have two zipped hip pockets plus one rear pocket, and while I just used my Helly Hansen Kvitfjell Race jacket for storage, I must admit I did miss having a thigh pocket for my phone, which I have on my Powderqueen bibs. Yes, I know it's better to keep my phone in the Life Pocket closer to hand, but the thigh pocket is really convenient.

Durability and value

As usual, there are a well-built pair of trousers from Helly but I did realize when I got home that I already have a small slash at the ankles, probably from a ski edge. This is a common occurrence and these pants have reinforced ankles to help with this so perhaps the reinforcements need to go up higher or perhaps I just need to be more careful. Other than that, they're looking great and I expect them to hold up for a while.

Often, a high-peforming and well-constructed pair or ski pants like this will set you back a pretty penny and Helly Hansen gear can be fairly pricey, but these ski pants are really reasonably priced and you get lots for your money.

Helly Hansen Legendary Insulated Ski Pants: the bottom line

Overall, these aren't the toughest or most technical ski pants on the market, but for most of us, they provide just what we need at a very fair price. They excel in comfort, are well-fitting and warm enough for more resort days. The only reason I wouldn't choose them is because I prefer bibs, and for that reason my Powderqueen bibs will win out most days, but I think there's a good reason why the Legendary pants are a bestselling item from Helly Hansen's catalog.

Helly Hansen Kvitfjell Race Insulated Ski Jacket: first impressions 

If you love skiing and you really love doing it in style, you're going to be sorely tempted by the Kvitfjell Race jacket. This ski jacket from Helly Hansen has already won awards and it's no surprise, given that it was designed with input from the Norwegian national alpine ski team. The professional advice is obvious in its high performance for resort skiing in all conditions.

Fully waterproof and packed with Primaloft Black Ocean Recycled insulation, we've never felt cold in this jacket, even in sub-zero temps and there's no need for a mid layer on milder days. Insulated jackets can pose a problem in the spring, especially if you want to ski hard, but we've found it's very breathable plus it has underarm vents when you overdress.

Because it was designed with ski racers in mind, this jacket won't hinder your mobility in any way. From the articulated sleeves to four-way stretch, you'll easily be able to adjust your boots and take on bumps if that's your thing.

Helly Hansen's ski gear is getting increasingly tech-heavy and this jacket is no exception. There's a RECCO reflector built into the hood in case you decide to go off-piste and get in trouble as well as a Life Pocket to keep your phone close to hand and stop it from dying in the cold. There's also a super handy phone leash so you'll never drop your phone from the chairlift again and a goggle wipe for powder days.

Pockets abound here – we've found six so far including a well-positioned lift pass pocket on the left sleeve – and you can reasonably leave your backpack at home even during a full day on the slopes. The hood is helmet-compatible thanks to an initially hard-to-find inner zip and the women's version has other women's specific adjustable details so it can be tailored to your body.

And then there's the aesthetics. This retro-styled jacket has classic good looks that make it a head-turning piece of gear and one you'll likely want to wear for years and years. That's a good thing too, because it's easily one of the most expensive ski jackets we've tested.

Helly Hansen Kvitfjell Race Insulated Ski Jacket: in the field 

I've loved skiing in my Helly Hansen Elevation Infinity 2.0 Ski Shell Jacket for the last couple of years so I was actually a little conflicted when I was offered this to test. Could I possibly like a jacket as much as the Elevation Infinity? What if I liked it more? There was only one way to find out, so I've taken this to Verbier and Chamonix this year and tested it in whiteout conditions and bluebird ski days.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a small in this jacket, which is my usual size, and I'm very happy with it. Ski clothes and Helly Hansen jackets are often a bit baggy on me, but this has enough room to wear over a wool base layer and my half-zip Daybreaker fleece without looking like I'm wearing my big brother's jacket.

It's got a real retro vibe so the fit is quite sleek and flattering rather than bulky and baggy, which is more functional for skiing and there's lots of stretch added for mobility.

I got to put this to the test on a busy press trip to Chamonix with the brand where we were moving around the mountain a lot with ski patrol. That involved a lot of taking my skis off and putting my boots in walk mode and I was able to move perfectly comfortably, even with lots of layers.

Weather protection and breathability 

As I mentioned, I've been used to skiing in a shell with lots of layers for a while, so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about going back to an insulated jacket. Would it be too warm?

Well, I can say that I've never been cold in this jacket, even without a few sub-zero days at the top of the chairlift, and in general, I do run a little cold, so that's a great start.

On my last two days in Chamonix, I went into autopilot and wore this over my fleece even though the temperatures were relatively mild. I'd overdressed and did find myself getting a little sweaty, especially because one day I was skiing Les Houches alone, it was quiet, and I was lapping runs at very high speed with very little waiting time between runs.

However, that gave me a good chance to test the breathability of the Primaloft insulation, and amazingly I didn't stay damp or get chilled when the temperatures started to drop at the end of the day. I was wearing merino wool against my skin, which certainly helped, and I was able to ski all day without having to tie my fleece around my waist and risk looking like a gaper.

In a more unusual test of this jacket's breathability, I got the unexpected opportunity to go ski touring when I was in Verbier but this was the only jacket I had brought with me on my trip. I'd usually go touring in a softshell, and it was snowing that day, so I threw this on over my Houdini Power Hoodie to get on the gondola thinking I would have to shed it and put it in my backpack once I got moving.

I skinned uphill for about 4.5k from the mid mountain gondola to a mountain hut. Amazingly, I never needed to take this jacket off off and just unzipped the vents. I'm not saying this is a touring jacket by any stretch, but it is breathable.

Weight and packability

This is an insulated ski jacket, so it's not going to be light compared to a shell or softshell and it's in line with other insulated Helly Hansen ski jackets like the Verbier Infinity in terms of weight.

That said, I've worn it for travel on a ski trip where I didn't want to check a bag and didn't find it particularly burdensome, and I recently rolled it up and managed to pack it in my Fjallraven High Coast Duffel 36 along with my other clothes for a flight. I do pack light and I don't want to give the impression that it's feather-light and super compressible, but for what it is I'd say it's an acceptable weight and size when packed.

Storage, hood and other features

For spending full days on the hill, I wanted to carry my neck gaiter, ski gloves, beanie, ski pass, phone, portable charger and cord and my wallet, and I really didn't want to wear a backpack. With all the pockets in this jacket, I managed that and still had room to spare.

I used the inner pocket for my charger and chest pockets for my phone and wallet. Then I still had the hand warming pockets free for my beanie and neck gaiter when I wasn't wearing them. Compared to my Elevation Infinity, the ski pass pocket has moved down to the forearm from the upper arm which is much more practical for boarding gondolas.

Some of the other pockets contain hand surprises too, from a goggle wipe in the left hand warming pocket which I used loads on powder days, to the phone leash in the life pocket which I thought was just genius for using my phone on the ski lift. That will save a lot of skiers a lot of money but make spring cleanup less lucrative!

The hood is obviously helmet-compatible because it's 2025 so I was surprised when mine kept coming down during a snowstorm. When I got back to the hotel I took a proper look and realized there's a zipper on the inside of the hood that you need to unzip to get the hood over your helmet properly in the first place, then you can tighten it. It works great, just not immediately obvious.

As for other features, there's a RECOO reflector built into the hood and I was pleased to see Chamonix ski patrol using the transceiver when I was there. This can really speed up the process of finding off-piste skiers if there's an avalanche and they don't have a beacon.

The only thing I can think of that's missing is a high vis detail which a lot of other Helly jackets have on the hood that makes you really easy to see in whiteout conditions, but I also get that it doesn't go with the awesome aesthetic of this smart-looking jacket.

Durability and value

Clearly I've only been testing this jacket this season so I can't hand-on-heart say it will last years, but based on its construction and my experience with Helly Hansen, I'm pretty confident in its ability to stand up to the test of time.

As for value, well the price is a little eye-watering and you can spend less on a perfectly good ski jacket and be happy. But, if you live to ski and want to look good and have access to all the latest tech? You'll love the retro vibe of this classic-looking jacket.

Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the hills and mountains when the landscape is blanketed in a layer of snow. It’s a pursuit that sits between hiking and skiing and allows outdoors fans to stay active in the winter.

While snowshoeing looks straightforward enough, when you first get started there are few things that are helpful to know.

Here’s what I wished I had known before I went snowshoeing.

1. You need the right snowshoes

When looking for the best snowshoes it’s important to know that there are multiple types, and while they all have the same aim to allow you to walk on snow, they should be chosen carefully.

I was fortunate to have a pair of lightweight MSR snowshoes but when my partner wanted to try my snowshoes because he felt his were too heavy, it turned out they were not the right size for him.

You see, snowshoes should be chosen according to your overall weight and also your shoe size. My MSR snowshoes are actually for women and while they were ideal for my size and weight, they were not great for my partner and did not provide enough float.

2. Float is a technical term worth knowing

Float is what stops you from sinking into the snow. You want the snowshoes to have a large enough surface area to keep you “floating” on the surface of the snow but not so large and heavy that they make walking hard work.

I found that my snowshoes, made for my weight, provided the right float but they were not suited to my partner. There are some snowshoes, as I discovered later, that can be adjusted to provide a different float according to the conditions and the weight of the user.

3. Check your shoe size

I have large feet. They are the same size as an average man’s foot so I had to set up the women’s snowshoes to the largest shoe size. They just fit my boots and no more. Before investing in a pair of snowshoes, it's important to check they are going to fit your boots.

You want the straps to fit around your boots and keep your footwear snug; not loose nor too tight.

4. Wear boots not shoes

When I first got the snowshoes I took them for a walk on local trails. I thought they would work perfectly well if I wore my trail running shoes. This was a very bad idea indeed. My feet ended up wet from melted snow and also cold due to the wet.

Ideally, you want to wear winter hiking boots with snowshoes because while you will be walking on top of the snow, you will inevitably still end up with a lot of snow and wet on top of the snowshoes and your boots.

5. Add gaiters

I wished I’d thought to add hiking gaiters to my shins and ankles when snowshoeing. Even when wearing winter hiking boots, I still ended up with snow inside my boots, while gaiters would have added better protection.

6. Snowshoes are spiky

I was quite taken aback by how sharp the base of the snowshoes are. The edges are serrated for traction and they should be touched with caution.

You should be careful when packing and carrying the snowshoes in case you catch your skin with the base.

7. I ripped my over-pants

Not only did I realise I should have worn gaiters for snowshoeing but I also found the snowshoes snagged the hems of my waterproof over-pants. I found I needed to walk with my feet spaced a bit further apart than normal to stop the base catching on the pants. This annoying and quite costly as I had to repair the hem of my pants.

8. Snowshoeing is actually quite hard work

In my mind, before going snowshoeing, I pictured myself easily walking on the snow’s surface. It is certainly easier to walk on deep snow in snowshoes when compared to hiking but snowshoeing is still quite hard work.

Yes, the snowshoes provide flotation, but with each step I found I still sunk into the snow a bit. If you are at the front of a group, or on your own, you will need to break the trail and if the snow is light and fluffy it can be hard work.

With each step, you need to lift your leg up higher than you would if walking on a snow-free trail and I found my calves, thighs muscles and hip flexors became quite fatigued.

The snowshoes add weight to your legs as well. Some snowshoes are lighter than others but even so, it’s an extra item of kit that your body needs to move over the ground.

Snowshoeing is aided by the use of cross country ski poles, or similar, but these also require your body to be more physical than simply walking. The poles help with balance and momentum and that means you need to use upper body muscles.

If you were to try to walk in deep snow without snowshoes this would also prove very hard work but snowshoeing is also a fairly physical activity.

9. You'll get a bit sweaty

While snowshoeing takes place in winter, and temperatures can be low, you will still end up working up a sweat because it can be physically demanding. If you plan to walk up hills and mountains and tackle a range of terrain, you will quickly get warm and I found I ended up sweaty. In fact, I was surprised by how much I sweated even on a very chilly day.

But then, when I stopped to enjoy a view or for a bite to eat, my body temperature dropped quickly. Sweat can make your base layers damp and that always leaves me cold.

So, it’s a good idea to make sure you have all the right kit for snowshoeing. The best plan is for a combination of winter hiking and skiing gear.

10. Snowshoes work well on ice

I was surprised by how good the traction of snowshoes is on icy hills. I knew the snowshoes would hold well in snow, but not on ice.

It felt like I had four-wheel drive on most of the snowy terrain, whether it was powder snow or ice.

11. Be prepared to carry your snowshoes

I discovered that snowshoes are best suited to terrain covered in a thick layer of snow. Where the snow is thin or there are rocks and grass, it’s better to remove the snowshoes and carry them.

The best way to carry snowshoes is on the outside of a backpack, so you should make sure your backpack has a way to tie on the snowshoes.

12. Build it up

If snowshoeing is a new activity you should build up your distance and aspirations carefully. Setting out for a long hike when you are not physically ready will leave your exhausted. I was surprised by just how tiring it is to walk in snowshoes.

It's better to enjoy a shorter and sweeter snowshoeing adventure than to set out to do far more than your body is used to.

I've been wearing these socks for winter adventures for the past two years, including two trips to Verbier (one frigid), several cold Nordic ski tours in Scotland, alpine touring in Switzerland in glacier trekking in the Alps.

Here's how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I have small feet. As in, my nine-year-old is nearly ready to start sharing my shoes, much to her delight. And sometimes, I find that even the smallest socks in adult sizing are too big, which is a problem when it comes to ski socks. Not with these, however. I've been wearing the smallest size, which is a US 4.5 - 5.5, and I'm pleased to say they fit perfectly.

These socks perfectly contour to my feet and lower legs. They are compressive, but not uncomfortably tight, and there's no extra material around my toes or heels. All of that means that when I'm making turns or cross country skiing, there's no unwanted friction or rubbing to ruin my day.

Are they puppy-soft? No, but basically, I can wear these all day without really noticing them or thinking about my socks, which is the next best thing. They're 32% merino wool, which doesn't seem to be enough for any itching.

Temperature regulation and moisture management

Compared to my other ski socks, I'd describe these as medium weight, and the merino wool content has been enough to keep my toes from freezing even in -19C conditions during dawn sweeps with ski patrol. However, since my true love is backcountry touring, it's important that my socks also keep my feet from getting too warm and sweaty and these socks are excellent at temperature regulation and moisture management.

Just a week ago, I woke up to very mild temperatures in Verbier. I knew this without checking the forecast because it was raining down in the valley. I had rented an AT setup the day before so I jumped on the Medran gondola anyway and by the time I reached mid-mountain, a light snow was falling. I took off for 4.4k of uphill in relatively mild conditions and at no point did my feet overheat, nor did they ever feel damp.

Durability and odor control

As I mentioned, I've been wearing these socks exclusively for winter adventures for the last two years, and they've held up brilliantly without much pilling or losing any elasticity. I do have a backup pair waiting in the wings but I don't expect to have to use them any time soon.

As for odor control, these socks perform like anything else made with merino wool – they don't stink. I honestly couldn't tell you if I've ever washed them, but I just gave them a good sniff and while I wouldn't say they're totally fresh, I'm quite happy to take them with me to Chamonix next week as they are.

The North Face Summit Series Patrol Gore-Tex Gloves are burly, but not bulky or heavy. These mountaineering gloves boast the rugged advantages of a leather shell to stand up against rock and rope, extra padding on the knuckles and a Gore-Tex waterproof lining all in a lightweight and comfortable construction.

The Heatseeker Eco Pro High-Performance Synthetic Insulation has worked for us in whiteout conditions at high altitude while the soft fleece lining is breathable enough that you can wear them in milder conditions too. Curved fingers mean you can wear them comfortably all day long.

In addition to weather protection, mountaineering gloves really need to be easy to get on and off in a hurry, and without being dropped, and this pair has all the bells and whistles needed to keep them functional. Wrist leashes ensure you can remove them to take photos or check your GPS without losing them and a cuff pull makes them easy to get on in a hurry or over liner gloves. There's also a carabiner loop on the ring finger if you want to attach them to your pack and keep them close to hand.

A soft nose wipe on the thumb means there's no need to go digging for tissues when you're climbing up a steep slope and your nose is running faster than your legs.

These gloves are more about protection than they are about dexterity, and you shouldn't expect to be able to operate your phone with them, but you can adjust the buckles on your ski boots no problem.

If you compare them to a pair of ski gloves, they're eye-wateringly expensive, but bear in mind these are meant for alpine expeditions where you'll face the toughest conditions. If that's what's next for you, you'll be warm and comfortable in these gloves, but if you're just going hiking, they're overkill.

The North Face Summit Series Patrol Gore-Tex Gloves: in the field 

I first tested these gloves out in whiteout conditions in the Italian Alps during a glacier trek. I also took them to Verbier recently for a ski trip where I wore them for both alpine skiing and ski touring, and have even worn them on a few frigid hikes and for a long day of Nordic skiing during the coldest January in 15 years here in Scotland.

Here's how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

Though the rest of me is quite small, I have long fingers which occasionally means small gloves don't fit, however, I tested these in a small and they're a perfect fit. There's about a centimeter of extra space at the tip of each finger and they're close-fitting without inhibiting my ability to bend and stretch my fingers. I haven't needed to wear them with liner gloves as they're quite warm enough, but there's room to do so without sizing up.

They have a nice, soft fleece lining with no annoying seams to rub, and I've been able to wear them for long periods without feeling like I need to take them off. The fingers are designed with so-called Precurve which is exactly what it sounds like and seems a bit gimmicky, but since they're quite tough gloves, I think it actually does help that my hands and fingers can just relax when I'm wearing them. It feels nice anyway.

Temperature regulation and moisture management

The first time I wore these was my coldest adventure in them, as we ascended the famous Skyway Monte Bianco in Italy to Punta Helbronner at 11,300 feet where we emerged to whiteout conditions for our glacier trek. I couldn't resist taking my gloves off a lot to take photographs and, yes, my fingers quickly froze when I did, but I was pleased at how quickly and effectively they warmed back up when I put them back on.

Since they had kept me warm and safe at such high altitude in bad weather, I figured they were a safe bet for a ski trip to Verbier, and they were for my first day of alpine skiing. The next day I decided to rent an AT setup and go touring uphill, however, and the weather was relatively mild but these were the only gloves I had. Would they be too warm?

I was pleased to discover that they're really breathable, so even though I could have done most of the tour with no gloves, I was quite comfortable wearing them and it meant my hands got some protection from my poles.

Durability and other details

These gloves are certainly built to last and I'd expect to be able to wear them for years, even for rocky scrambles, roped ascents and handling mountaineering gear like ice axes and crampons.

This isn't true for all gloves, but they're easy to pull on thanks to the cuff pull and easy to secure with a hook and loop fastening that seems to work even when I'm wearing multiple layers. I'm a big fan of using the wrist leash so I don't drop them when I'm taking photographs.

I haven't used the carabiner tab on the ring finger, but it's probably handy for keeping them more closely secured to a pack than using the wrist leash. There's also a nose wipe, if that's your sort of thing. There is a wrist leash, but it's not elasticated and when I wore these gloves on a winter Munro, I did find that it wasn't very functional.

Do these gloves do what they promise? Absolutely. They're ultra warm, breathable, waterproof, tough and comfortable.

Are they worth the price? If you're going mountaineering and want a pair of gloves that will stand up to the toughest conditions and keep you safe and warm, then you might consider them, especially if you have money to burn.

Ask any long-time skier and they'll tell you that your own pair of boots is one of the best investments you can make in the sport. If you've mastered your technique, controlled those turns, and feel more confident skiing at speed, custom boots are the next step to progressing your ability by putting an end to ill-fitting rentals.

A proper fitting, however, is a serious commitment. Far from a cinch, the process is a lengthy and rigorous one, and there are a few things you ought to be aware of before you pay a visit to your local winter sports store; from what socks to wear to the myriad of modification options available. When it comes to how to dress for skiing, boots are the biggest undertaking.

And before you consider scrimping, rest assured that visiting a specialized fitter is absolutely paramount. As Jonah Drescher at Christy Sports points out, "Many things can be found and purchased digitally, but getting fit for a pair of ski boots is not one".

Why invest in ski boots over rentals?

A well-fitting pair of ski boots are an asset to your skiing, but they don't come cheap. You can expect to pay between $350 to $850, with that figure increasing depending on the various modification options you add. With that in mind, you might question whether your own boots are even worth the money, especially if you only ski once or twice a year (or less).

But if you're serious about skiing, a fitted pair of ski boots will always be worthwhile, no matter how often you take to the slopes. "Outside of the basic clothing and protective gear, the first thing a person should look into is getting their own ski boots, as they are the one piece of winter gear that's not just an accessory but a piece of your skiing exoskeleton," says Jonah Drescher of Christy Sports, a former member of the US ski team.

Compared to rentals which cater to "one size fits all", the way ski boots fit is far more snug as they're essentially tailor-made to you. "Generally, rental boots tend to be on the looser side, which can cause your foot to move around inside the boot," says Mark Watson, the ski training manager at Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports. "This lack of a snug fit means you have less control over your skis and receive less feedback about what’s happening under your feet."

Put simply, owning your own pair of ski boots allows you to get a custom fit that provides better support, control, and comfort, which consequently enhances your skiing. It's a small price to pay for better (and safer) skiing.

How to prepare for a ski boot fitting

You know you'll be in the hands of trusted experts if you visit a reputable winter sports store, but there are still ways you can prepare as a customer in order to ensure your ski boot fitting runs smoothly.

Allow plenty of time

First, factor in plenty of time for your fitting. You won't be in and out of the store in a matter of minutes, as you might be when buying a ski jacket. "Most of the time, it will require at least a 90-minute initial fitting, during which the correct shell will be chosen, an insole will be installed, and any initial heat fitting might be done," says Mark. This doesn't account for any additional work either, such as modifications after fitting, so it's a good idea to leave some wiggle room for alterations before your ski trip.

Wear the right socks

Unsurprisingly, ski socks are best for a boot fitting, but any long sock will do. Whatever you do, don't settle for ankle socks as they won't give you a good indication of how your ski boots fit.

Mark says it's also important that you avoid overly thick ski socks. "If you imagine how snug a proper ski boot should feel, adding a thick sock increases pressure and reduces blood flow even further," he says. "Even though it sounds counterintuitive, sometimes a thinner sock is best to improve blood flow."

Bring any insoles or orthotics

If you wear insoles or orthotics to correct your feet, it's a good idea to take them along to your ski boot fitting. This will give your fitter an idea of any recurring problems so they can recommend the right adjustments for your boot (such as custom footbeds). Be prepared to share any medical history pertaining to your feet, too.

What to expect at a ski boot fitting

With that out of the way, here's what to anticipate at the store itself. (Remember, lots of ski boot fitters will require you to book ahead, so make sure you've done your research.)

1. Prepare for a consultation first

Buying a new pair of ski boots is sure to stir excitement, but don't expect to be fitted right away. Before you start trying out various models, your fitter will want to know more about your skiing history in order to find you the perfect pair of boots.

"We want to know about previous experiences with ski boots, both good and bad, and to get an overview of skiing experience and aspirations," says Mark. "This is done alongside an assessment of the size, shape and biomechanics of the foot and lower leg. We’ll find out anything that affects how a boot fits and make a recommendation for the best options."

Jonah emphasizes that this initial conversation can give way to a multitude of skiing tips and boot models that might be better suited to you. "There are some great features on today's boots, including crossover alpine boots that are made to fit traditional bindings and also switch to pin system to ski in the out of bound area," he says. "Also, the new BOA system is replacing some of the older buckle systems for a more even tightening of the ski boot."

2. You'll be measured with a shell check

As Mark notes, ski boots comprise two basic components: a softer inner boot that hugs your foot, and a hard outer shell which is fastened with buckles and clips to your ski's bindings (one of the main differences of ski boots vs snowboard boots).

"The shell governs how a boot fits, so a shell check is needed with every boot," Mark says. "The foot is placed into just the shell (no inner boot inside) and the amount of space is assessed in five crucial areas: length, ankle width, forefoot width, instep height and calf."

This initial measurement will help you find a boot that's the correct size, shape, and volume for your feet, filtering out a lot of the models you might see on the shelves. At this point, you'll discover lots about your feet, like whether they're low or high volume, or if they're pronated or supinated.

3. Testing the boots is a must

Once your fitter has found a few possible boot options with the right shell size, the next step is trying them on with the boot liner. "Doing up the boots correctly – leg clips first – brings the heel back into position and gives the toes more room," Mark explains. "The boot is then left on for 10-15 minutes in a standing position, mimicking a relaxed ski stance. It shouldn’t be necessary to try on more than two or three models."

At this stage, over-tightening is a common mistake. As Mark notes, the fit should come from the shape rather than having to over-tighten the clips. "Over-tightening can also be a sign that the person is not in the correct boot, as they are having to tighten excessively just to feel secure," he adds.

4. Expect a bit of discomfort at first

The biggest difference between rental ski boots and custom ones is how they feel on your foot. That's because your ski boots will feel uncomfortably tight at first. "Where a rental is a more generic fit, a custom boot fit is meant to fit like an extension of your body," Jonah says. "Be ready for the fit of your new boots to be much tighter and more snug than any boot has felt on your foot before."

Next, your fitter might prod a stick into your boots to assess how much room there is. If there's space to move, they're probably too big. "You should never judge a ski boot by how it feels straight away," says Mark. "At this point it's crucial to remember that as the foam of the liner packs down, the ski boot’s internal volume can increase by about 15 percent, so a snug fit at the beginning is very important. " This is why finding time to wear your boots in is key to getting ready for ski season.

5. Your liners will be molded with heat

No pair of feet are the same, and even our own two feet can be different sizes or widths, so once you've found the right boot your fitter will likely mold the liners to your feet. To do this, they'll be put into a machine that works like an oven. Once warm enough, you'll be asked to wear some toe caps before placing your feet into the liner. You'll then stand for several minutes until they form to the shape of your feet for the perfect fit.

"With certain models, the plastic shell can also be custom moulded," Mark adds. "As specialists in boot fitting, we're also able to make bespoke changes to boots. This can take many forms, including modifications to the shell or liner via heating and mechanically stretching materials, carefully shaving plastics and foams, or altering angles and stance."

6. You'll be asked if you want futher customization

At this point in your fitting, the most common add-on is custom footbeds to help stabilize your feet. According to Mark, footbeds can eliminate a lot of problems and improve your ski performance by better supporting your foot structure. "This helps muscles relax and stops them tiring so quickly, meaning there’s less movement and rubbing caused by collapsing of the foot," he says. The same options applies to cross country ski boots, too.

If you have any abnormalities in your feet, your fitter can make additional changes, too. "Since ski boots are made of thermoforming plastics, we can use heat and special tools to create shapes that are not standard on a ski boot," Mark says. "Common problem areas in ski boots include bunions, fifth metatarsal areas, ankle bones, and navicular areas. We heat the shell and push out the area as much as needed."

If you don't have the budget for custom footbeds, another modification option is adding a supportive insole. "Depending on your foot type, insoles will improve the overall fit, comfort, and function of the boot," notes Mark. "Every foot type will benefit from having a well-made insole inside their ski boots, and depending on your foot the benefits will vary."

7. Remember that the boot chooses you

Finally, when it comes to finding the perfect pair of ski boots, remember that the boot chooses you. Just like Harry Potter on his first visit to Ollivander's wand shop, you'll have little power in which boots are best for you, so don't be guided by color or style. It's barely worth browsing the shelves at all.

"Take brand names out of the equation, too," says Jonah. "Your boot fitter knows what boots have the correct shape for your foot and will help you choose the right boot for your size, shape, and ability."

After an hour or two, you should be walking out of the door with a brand new pair of ski boots tailor-made to you. And, ensuring you've been to a reputable store, you should be able to revisit for any further tweaks or modifications (sometimes free of charge!) In addition to his commitment to big mountain adventures and first descents, Xavier is the host of the Sustainability Dialogues podcast and has been outspoken on how climate change could impact snow sports.

Outdoor gear is expensive and you want to get it right when you invest in that new tent, sleeping bag or pair of hiking boots. That's why so many outdoor brands have generous exchange policies. Pay just $30 for a lifetime membership at REI for example and you can return almost any item within a year of purchase for a refund or replacement. The Washington-based brand, however, has started rolling back that offer after discovering some customers have committed what it calls "past abuse" of the policy.

In an October 30 email published by Denver's 9News, REI informs customer Lindsay Powell that she will no longer be allowed to exchange or return items at the store as of November 6, despite being a member. The article reports that Powell is one of "a very small subset of members" totaling less than 0.02% of the brand's 24 million subscribers "who demonstrated a clear abuse" of the company's return policy.

"When we reviewed your account, we found that the number and frequency of returns you have made far exceeds what we typically see from members. While we stand behind the gear we sell and recognize we don't always get it right, we noticed that this was an established pattern rather an isolated event," writes the brand.

In the article, Powell says that since 2014, she has returned about $3,100 worth of merchandise out of nearly $11,000 spent at the outlet, or more than 30 percent of her total purchases. This, she explains, is largely due to her having unusually small feet which makes it hard to find the right fit.

REI's return policy covers most items, with the exception of dirty gear, damaged caused by ordinary wear-and-tear, ReSupply products and final sale items. Products including activity monitors, GPS watches, bike trainers, emergency-communication devices and cameras have a shorter 90-day return period. However, there is no official limit provided on REI's website as to how much or how frequently a customer can make returns or exchanges or what constitutes abuse. The company has declined to elaborate on its decision-making process in this case.

REI isn't the only major retailer to tighten the screws on returns and exchanges ahead of the busy festive shopping period. In September, Target updated its return policy to deny customers "suspected of fraud or abuse" while Amazon added processing fees in June for customers with high return rates.

Cult outdoors brand Arc'teryx has launched a new range of skiwear featuring a camo print, with a hidden twist.

The move comes after the popularity of the label's Grotto Torque beanie – which featured an all over print of its abstract Arc’teryx bird logo. Seeing that product take off ('scuse pun) inspired the brand's designers to integrate it into a new camo-style print for its Fall-Winter 2024 freeride range of clothing.

The Grottoflage collection includes nine products for men and women, such as the Sentinel jacket, Sabre pants and jacket and Rho baselayers.

Philip O’Sullivan, director of colour and graphics at the Canadian company, said: "We dissected our logo and created a textural pattern by layering the elements in shades of grey and black.

“Grottoflage is our take on a camouflage-style print and was inspired by the success of our coveted Grotto toque. We iterated on the concept countless times to perfect the visual, obsessing over every mark.”

The new pattern will be included in the Arc'teryx freeride skiwear collection, which already features solid color designs.

Our pick of the products includes the Sentinel jacket, which is created with durability and comfort in mind. It’s made with breathable and waterproof 80D 3L ePE Gore-Tex, with added details of pit zips, a helmet-compatible hood, large pockets and a RECCO® reflector.

The Sabre jacket and pants are both made with 80D 3L ePE GORE-TEX fabric, and each of these has a RECCO reflector. The jacket has a StormHood, which the pants have thigh vents. Both have articulated patterning and a fit that’s clean but not restrictive.

Scandi fashion brand H&M has never been known for technical outdoor clothing, but it's looking to change all that with its new collection of ski gear.

The high street brand launched its Move collection of activewear, including pieces such as a waterproof jacket for hiking and trail running vest two years ago and the new Ski Wear by Move collection is fully focused on the ski slopes, and beyond. While the first press shots reveal it to be predictably fashion-forward, with a minimalist aesthetic and neutral colorways, the specs suggest the brand is going after more than just those who want to look chic at apres.

Technical details abound in the new pieces, which incorporate H&M’s trademarked performance fabrics such as the windproof, waterproof and breathable StormMove and the insulating ThermoMove in place of the ubiquitous Gore-Tex and PrimaLoft.

The three-layer women's Shell Jacket in Storm Move ($229) claims to be fully waterproof and breathable with pit zips for when you work up a sweat shredding powder. There's a zipped chest pocket to tuck your ski pass away safely and a cloth to wipe your ski goggles clean while jersey inner cuffs in the sleeves have thumb holes to keep snow and wind from penetrating your sleeves. Most surprisingly of all, this jacket (and the men's version) comes equipped with a RECCO reflector to make you searchable in the backcountry, suggesting the brand intends this gear to take people off-piste.

“With this collection, we've combined Scandinavian aesthetics with technical materials that we’ve designed for performance in snow sports,” says Mfon Boman, H&M Move's Outdoor Product Manager.

“It hits the sweet spot between fashion and functionality.”

For your lower half, there are several different designs of ski pants such as the lined two-layer ski pants for women ($179) with inner leg ventilation panels and integrated snow gaiters to fit snugly around your ski boots and the men's regular fit version ($199), both of which also feature the search and rescue technology.

The line is intended to be a complete winter layering system with puffer jackets, ski gloves and merino wool base layers and thermal leggings. Though the collection aims to uphold H&M's affordability pledge, technical fabrics don't come cheap and you shouldn't expect to walk out of the store with quite the same bargain as you'll find in the brand's cardigans. That said, the ski jackets still come in well below nearly every ski jacket for men we've tested (read our article on whether or not you can rely on a budget ski jacket).

So is H&M ready to go all the way from the high street to the backcountry? To be honest, we found quite a few flaws with their Move designs last year, including the StormMove 3-Layer Shell Jacket which leaked water, and Mesh Running Vest which lacked adjustable details and had pocket issues. That said, here's why we're paying attention: H&M says it's collaborated with Zurich-based outdoor agency Grand Studio – which has worked with snow sports brands Burton, Billabong, Roxy and Quiksilver among others – to ensure these garments meet the requirements of mountain users, so things could have improved.

We're planning to take some of this gear out on the slopes in the Alps this winter to test it in real-life conditions, so we'll report back then. If you can't wait, the Ski Wear by Move collection is available now at H&M with more styles dropping on December 9.

With hybrid and multi-use outdoors kit on the rise, one leading outdoors brand aims to stand out from the crowd with a new range of activity-specific ski backpacks.

Using a wealth of design experience gained over more than 100 years in business, Swedish company Haglöfs has designed a collection of technically equipped and fully featured backpacks for activities ranging from resort skiing to longer-distance ski touring journeys.

They have also listened to input and tips from ambassadors and other professional athletes to ensure the winter packs tick every box on features.

“One backpack does not fit all adventures,” says Niklas Karlsson, a senior product manager at Haglöfs. "Each of our mountain backpacks has a specific activity in mind.

"Working closely with our athletes to get every feature right is a vital part of our design process."

One thing that does seem to have been overlooked, however, is male and female-specific designs. The packs are unisex although they are sold in S/M and M/L sizes.

The collection includes:

This pack is designed for skiers to comfortably carry essentials from hut to hut while moving fast in alpine environments. It has a durable and compressible roll-top construction and adjustable side and load lifter straps.

The front compartment offers easy access to avalanche emergency gear. Pockets and gear attachment points are strategically placed, plus there is an A-frame carry system for ski transport.

François Montuori, a mountain athlete and test pilot for the pack, said: “When ski touring, for safety and convenience, you need to have easy access to your gear without removing your backpack. With this backpack, you can take off your skis without having to remove the backpack first.

Organizing specialist equipment before a big mountain mission is a pain if you don’t own it already. Do you shell out on something that is on the kit list but you might never use again? But what if it’s not quite right for the task, or for you? Perhaps you put pressure on a friendship by asking to borrow a mate’s spenny down jacket or four-season sleeping bag. Will they still speak to you when you return it complete with coffee stain?

Getting outdoors requires a lot of kit, and how much you own comes down to how much money you have, how much space you have to store it, and how easy it is to cart it all around with you.

Renting outdoor gear is a no-brainer really. After all, haven’t we been doing this with skis and ski boots for decades? The new ‘rent, adventure, return’ scheme from Trekkit – an outdoor retailer specializing in top brands, such as Rab, Fjällräven, Mountain Equipment and Osprey – means you can try out specialist equipment at a fraction of the list price.

How to rent outdoor gear

There are tons of benefits to renting your outdoor gear, including reducing the impact on the environment of manufactured goods, and saving money not shelling out on something that may spend most of its life gathering dust in your loft. Here's how to go about it.

Plan your trip

Think about the activities you're going to do and the weather and conditions you'll encounter. What kit would make the trip more enjoyable and more comfortable?

Arrange delivery

Organize for delivery to be shipped to your home before you go, or have it delivered to your destination, which saves time and effort carting it with you.

Take care of your gear

Normal wear and tear is expected when it comes to hire gear, and you won't be charged for retuning something that doesn't look squeaky clean any more. However, avoid being reckless with it or you'll be penalized.

Return it

At the end of your trip, pack the items and send back using the prepaid label. It's a good idea to take photos of the condition of the gear at the start and end of the hire period your own record and peace of mind.

Columbia Fast Trek III Fleece Gloves: first impressions 

There's nothing flashy about these hiking gloves. No waterproof membrane or leather overlays. But wear them out on a chilly hike and you'll be pleased you did.

Built from lightweight microfleece, these gloves have done a great job of keeping our fingers warm on recent field tests. The fabric is noticeably breathable, so when you're powering up a steep mountain, you don't have to remove the gloves to stay comfortable.

Pure fleece gloves aren't the most durable, but these are fitted with abrasion-resistant overlays on the palms and knuckles so they can keep working for you for longer.

Hate having to take your gloves off every time you want to check the GPS map on your phone? You don't need to with these gloves, which boast a touch screen-capable forefinger and thumb that actually works.

They're not waterproof, but of course if they were, they wouldn't be breathable, and the PFAS-free DWR fends off a drizzle anyway. There are no recycled materials used, sadly, but those are our only gripes. All in, they're comfortable, warm, breathable and functional and come at a brilliant price for hikers of all budgets.

Columbia Fast Trek III Fleece Gloves: in the field

I received a pair of these gloves to test on a press trip to the Swiss Alps in September, but it wasn't cold enough to need them.

Back home in Scotland, cold weather has arrived and I recently found myself hiking up one of Scotland's Munros to find quite a bit of snow at 3,000 feet. Fortunately, I had these gloves with me.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I don't have big hands, but I've got long fingers which means I sometimes have to wear a medium in gloves, however I tested a small and they fit, well, like a glove. There's a tiny bit of room at the ends but not so much that you'd need to size down, unless you have very short fingers.

The fit is what I'd call low profile, so not exactly a liner glove but snug, especially around the wrist which is handy, since the cuff isn't adjustable. They're easy to wear with my fleece sleeve cuff over the top and I still have great finger dexterity thanks to the stretch.

Like any fleece gloves, they're soft and comfortable, though I did notice there are seams on the tips of the index finger and thumb where the touchscreen pad is. It didn't rub or annoy me but it's possible that it could over long days.

Warmth, breathability and moisture management

Despite the snow, I wasn't hiking in really frigid temperatures and it wasn't particularly windy, so I found these provided more than enough warmth. That said, they're fleece, and not super windproof, so if it were really cold, I'd want a shell glove.

What I really liked about these gloves is how breathable they are. I often wear waterproof gloves because of the Scottish climate, but my hands get sweaty. Even gaining around 1,000 feet per mile I didn't have to take them off and they wicked the sweat away brilliantly.

Weatherproofing and durability

As I've mentioned, these aren't the most windproof and they're not waterproof, but they are actually treated with a PFAS-free DWR which means they'll work for a light drizzle. Because of their breathability, I'd wear these any time I can get away with it.

Fleece gloves don't last forever, in my experience, so I was pleased to see the abrasion-resistant panels in the places that see the most contact. This actually adds a little windproofing and improves their durability.

Other details

I've tested quite a lot of gloves in my years at Advnture and most of them have claimed to have touchscreen capability (which means you can operate your phone without removing them). Very rarely does this actually work, so I was stunned the first time I pulled my phone out of my pocket to take a picture and it just worked. That's a huge plus for me as I love to document my hikes and use AllTrails+ for new routes.

The only other detail to note is a handy clip so I can keep them together in my backpack or packed away back at home.

Columbia Fast Trek III Fleece Gloves:: the bottom line

These are a straightforward but fairly impressive pair of hiking gloves for those who need a bit of warmth but aren't battling too much wet weather. The touchscreen capability is superior to most we've tried and they come at a lovely price. Over the last few decades, merino wool has become a staple of outdoor gear. It keeps you warm when the weather is cold but helps you stay cool when it’s warm out. It never gets stinky even with high-intensity, sweaty activities and it’s soft against your skin – unlike old-school wool. Best of all, it’s a natural fabric and therefore biodegradable.

Today, there are two standout companies creating outdoor apparel using merino wool: Smartwool and Icebreaker. These brands have many similarities, and a few key differences so we decided to take a deep dive into both companies, looking at where they came from, what they stand for and the quality and value of their products.

Smartwool: Origins and reputation

Smartwool claims to be the first company to create merino wool ski socks. It was founded in 1994 in the resort town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, by two ski instructors – Peter and Patty Duke – who say they just wanted to ski without getting cold feet. Fair enough. The husband and wife team started out their venture in their garage making ski socks using merino wool treated with chlorine to make it itch-free and resistant to shrinking.

The same year, the Dukes sold Smartwool to Denver-based VF Corporation, whose subsidiaries include The North Face, Dickies, Vans,and Timberland. In 2018, the Colorado Sun reported that VF moved the headquarters down to Denver, so while it’s no longer based in a mountain town, it’s still considered a Colorado company. 

Today, Smartwool is the best-known merino apparel brand in the US and they still make ski socks and have branched out into hiking socks and running socks. These days they are also known for making high-performing and good-quality base layers, thermal underwear, running shorts, running tops and accessories. True to their origins, they focus on gear that will keep people comfortable while they’re playing in the mountains.

In addition to merino wool, they use natural fabrics like Lyocell and synthetic materials to make blends that are high-performing, but more durable than pure wool, however the addition of synthetic fabrics means garments aren’t always biodegradable. Meanwhile, the Dukes have moved on to start a new merino wool sock company, Point6, based in Steamboat.

Icebreaker: Origins and reputation

• Icebreaker was founded in New Zealand in 1994 by entrepreneur Jeremy Moon
• The company opened its first store in the Wellington International Airport in 2005
• Icebreaker focuses on merino wool and other natural fabrics

Right around the same time as the Dukes were devising their plans to launch a merino-based apparel business in Colorado, down in New Zealand, 24-year-old entrepreneur Jeremy Moon was having a similar idea.

Moon didn’t have experience in the apparel business, but a chance encounter with merino sheep farmers Brian and Fiona Brakenridge in Marlborough opened his eyes to the magic of the fiber in 1995. In 1995, he launched Icebreaker using $250,000 of startup capital with a goal to produce low-impact outdoor gear that harnessed the natural performance of merino. 

According to an article in Unlimited, the first product from Icebreaker was a form of thermal underwear that could be worn as outerwear, and their early offerings consisted of socks, scarves, hats and gloves. Initially, the company worked to get its garments into retail stores before opening its first store in the Wellington International Airport in 2005. Today, their apparel is found at more than 5,000 stores across 50 countries.

Like Smartwool, Icebreaker was sold to VF Corporation in 2018, and while it’s still headquartered in Auckland, it has US head offices and continues to expand into the global market with retail stores in the US and Europe.

As for technologies, Icebreaker blends merino with cotton, linen and Lyocell for various technologies including MerinoLoft, a cruelty-free alternative to duck down, Shell+ which is water repellent and wind resistant, and Real Fleece, made from brushed merino fiber. Consequently, the company now produces base layers as well as jackets, dresses, T-shirts, running shorts and more. Its gear tends to focus almost exclusively on merino wool and other natural fibers.

Smartwool vs Icebreaker: environmental credentials

• Sustainability is a core value for both companies
• Both companies source their wool from ZQ Merino, which calls itself the world’s most ethical wool brand
• Smartwool is using merino wool scraps from their garment-making process to make insulation in their Smartloft products and utilizing recycled wool
• Icebreaker is four percent away from its goal of becoming a 100 percent plastic-free company

Sustainability is a core value of Smartwool, which currently partners with ZQ Merino to source its wool. ZQ Merino calls itself the world’s most ethical wool brand, and sources wool from hundreds of farmers across New Zealand. Smartwool’s 2030 sustainability goals include 100 percent recycled regenerative, recycled or responsibly sourced materials and they report that they’re already 94 percent of that goal.

In 2001, Smartwool started sourcing its wool from New Zealand after becoming frustrated with practices in Australia and in 2005 implemented a requirement that its wool suppliers no longer practice the controversial technique known as mulesing, which entails stripping the skin from a sheep’s buttocks to deter flies and parasites.

What else is Smartwool doing to promote sustainability? The company is using merino wool scraps from their garment-making process to make insulation in their Smartloft products and utilizing recycled wool. According to the sustainability rating directory Good On You, the brand currently scores three out of five and is rated “It’s a start” – while the company demonstrates good animal welfare policies, the reviewers state that it is “not taking adequate steps to ensure payment of a living wage for its workers.”

Like Smartwool, Icebreaker has an eye towards sustainability, sourcing its wool from ZQ Merino and able to trace 100 percent of its merino wool back to the source. It’s also four percent away from its goal of becoming a 100 percent plastic-free company.

It gets a similar rating to Smartwool by Good On You, which says the company “has good animal welfare policies and has good policies to monitor water use in its supply chain,” but similarly lacks certification by labor standards that help ensure worker health and safety, living wages, and other rights.

Smartwool vs Icebreaker: products

• Both brands offer a wide range of performance apparel for winter sports, hiking and running
• Icebreaker has branched out into leisurewear and everyday apparel and due to its investment in different technologies has more options for outerwear

Both brands offer a similar range of items for outdoor activities like winter sports, hiking and running, with base layers, underwear, socks and mid layers among their most popular offerings. 

Because Icebreaker has invested in developing fabric technologies, they offer a wider selection of items, including insulated jackets as well as dresses and skirts for leisure wear.

Smartwool has kept its offerings a little more limited in comparison, focusing on base layers, socks and underwear, but it also makes items like running shorts and hoodies.

These days, you’re likely to find both brands scoring highly in “best of” lists for base layers, thermal underwear and ski socks, though Smartwool has a reputation for being a bit more durable. This has nothing to do with quality; rather, Smartwool is more liberal with blending merino with synthetics like nylon, which lends more lifespan to their products, while Icebeaker’s commitment to merino and natural fibers means their base layers tend to biodegrade faster.

Smartwool vs Icebreaker: price

• Icebreaker is more expensive than Smartwool  
• Both brands have gear with higher price tags to reflect the high quality of their gear

There’s no doubt that Icebreaker is the more expensive brand, and that’s not a surprise given their commitment to merino wool. Smartwool’s willingness to blend their wool with synthetic materials brings the price down for the consumer.

For example, the Icebreaker 200 Oasis Long Sleeve Crewe Thermal Top retails at around $110 full price, whereas Smartwool’s Merino Sport Long Sleeve top is listed at $90. To add some perspective, you can find even more expensive merino base layers out there, such as Artilect’s W-Flatiron 185 Crew Td Tie Dye and you can find much cheaper versions including the EDZ Merino Base-Layer Long Sleeve.

It’s your choice

These two brands seem to share enough principles and practices that we can’t see a major argument for choosing one over the other; rather, it makes more sense to shop item by item. 

It’s true that Icebreaker is a little pricier, and their garments may not last as long (especially if you don’t take good care of them) but if a commitment to natural fibers is important to you, then this is the brand for you. They also have a wider selection of technologies and types of clothing.

Smartwool makes excellent clothing for the outdoors that will likely last a bit longer and cost a little less, but they do sneak more synthetic fibers into their gear.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: first impressions

Trying to find comfortable, well-fitting ski trousers can be awkward – especially when the winter thermostat can spike from -12°C / 10.4°F to a warm 7°C / 44.6°F with a wild mixture of winter conditions, wind and precipitation thrown in the mix.

Meet the Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants (you can also check out our Storm Shift jacket review), a surprisingly rugged, technical waterproof and windproof ski pants aimed at mountaineering and snow sports, and ideal for those looking for a go-to winter outer layer that dries quickly – in this case, by using a two-layer Gore-Tex system that helps wick moisture.

Indeed, if you’re looking for a well-fitting, snow-hopping women’s winter sport trouser for ski bunny adventures, then this might be the trouser for you.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: on the trails

I tried out the Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants on the Tröllaskagi Peninsula, a remote, often inaccessible location known as one of the jewels in the ski-touring crown of Iceland. I was lucky to have the chance to test the Storm Shift Pants on multiple occasions, on what felt like entirely different winter days with massive variations in temperatures and snow conditions.

No two winter days were the same, and accompanied by a wet, maritime climate subject to multiple snow storms, I needed a pair of hiking pants that were comfortable all day, and didn’t leave me feeling like I was wearing a pair of ‘rustly’ hardshell waterproof trousers.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: breathability and waterproofing

Patagonia’s waterproofing has always impressed me thanks to its quality construction. Using recycled polyester throughout the pants is a big deal – and by making a technical waterproof trouser with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish but without perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS), the brand suggests the future of performance ski kit. Technical pants should be able to withstand a level of weather resistance and deliver comfort without damaging the environment.

From top to bottom, the Storm Shift Pants are robust and comfortable to wear, thanks to several features that cleverly work together to release heat when needed, while keeping snow out on the downhill. It does this via articulated knees for mobility and agile turns, and mesh-lined thigh vents that quickly dump heat, without showing off an immodest amount of skin.

The liner was great at providing additional warmth, so on days where the thermostat hovered around 0°C / 32°F, I didn’t need to wear a Merino base layer as the trousers were able to wick moisture away to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Part of the appeal of the Storm Shift Pants is that they’ve been designed with ‘rider’s movement in mind’, meaning the cut has just enough flexibility for both uphill strides and downhill movement.

One of the key elements that can affect wearability is the waist adjustment. Getting to and from the slopes meant wearing merino layers in the car before putting my outer trousers for the drive over, which sometimes felt a bit uncomfortable if I was sat down for long periods of time.

The Storm Shift pants do have some adjustable sizing such an adjustable, lined waistband with a brushed tricot lining that wicks moisture, adjustable black elastic tabs that customize fit, a two-snap closure and a zip fly, so it’s very easy to make some small adjustments, but some people may prefer to go up a size for more give. I tested a size 6 (UK size 10) and these Storm Shift trousers noticeably worked more as a slim fit. For greater comfort, it should be noted that if you buy ‘true to size’ there’s not lots of room to wear bulky underlayers with these trousers, due to the thickness of the outer material.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: protection

The Patagonia Storm Shift Pants boast some more technical features to protect against the elements. For conditions such as skinning uphill or hiking that require dumping of heat, the leg vents have long, easy-to-use zippers that are ski glove friendly to help with temperature management.

For when the weather starts to hit, the Patagonia Storm Shift Pants have easily adjustable watertight zippers that are coated to keep the water out. And for protection when descending in deep snow or slushy conditions, the trousers offer some protection against moisture getting in.

A webbing loop on the rear yoke of the waistband that helps attach pants to the powder gasket on any Patagonia snow jacket (it’s like a kind of giant gaiter that stops snow accidentally sliding down your back). While this is only really an issue when you’re skiing in deep powder snow, it’s helpful to know that other features such as the high-rise waistband can prevent the trousers from sliding down when you’re skinning up the hill. They can also take a belt.

Rugged built-in gaiters easily slide over the ski boot without being an extra faff to adjust. However, my favorite snow protection feature must be the tough scuff guards, which have been designed in an aesthetically pleasing accent shade of the main trousers. These add durability and rigidity to the Storm Shift Pants, preventing snow getting in while also protecting the bottom hem.

Finally, a nod to a pair of ski trousers with multiple, user-friendly pockets! As with the Storm Shift Jacket, the multi-use pockets are located throughout the pants – two zippered handwarmer pockets and two zippered main pockets help secure items without the fear they might accidentally fall out. The only thing I’d like to have seen improved would have been a slightly deeper map pocket to accommodate a bigger phone and/or additional items such as a battery pack, as this is usually my go-to pocket for accessing technology or useful items. A RECCO reflector located in the jacket gives an extra layer of security, making it easier to pick up by avalanche transceivers.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Pants: durability

The Patagonia Storm Shift pants were tested for two months, and while I found them resistant to scuffs and usage, the lighter teal color meant mud was easily visible. I liked the webbing toggles, and the denier of the trousers felt like it was going to last and be resistant to scuffs compared to other trousers I’ve tested.

With this being a Patagonia product, it should come as no surprise that it has glowing eco credentials, made in a factory that supports workers’ rights and fair trade practices. Both the shell and the lining have been made with recycled polyester, while the outer shell fabric is bluesign approved and made without harmful per fluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS.) It’s a great step forwards to see Patagonia embrace recycled materials throughout their whole range and a delight to see them withstanding the same levels of testing without causing damage to the environment through the manufacturing process.

Ortovox Mesola ski jacket: first impressions

Slipping into the Ortovox Mesola ski jacket for the first time, I was struck by the jacket’s lightness, the softness of the fabrics and the cool details, including the subtle hits of color on the inside and outside that gave it some personality and sass. 

I was also impressed by its simplicity. Two oversized chest pockets are the only storage. This jacket is designed to be worn with a ski pack, so where it will be under a hip belt when you’re out skiing, there’s nothing there that would be uncomfortable or cause pressure points. 

The pull-to-adjust hood is helmet-sized, while a drawcord at the waist let me tighten the hem to block out the weather when I wasn’t wearing a pack. And the underarms have long pit zips to ensure that even on the warmest days I won’t overheat. 

Most of the jacket has a brushed and textured inside. It felt nice when I put it on – a lot cozier than when I put on a pure waterproof breathable shell, but it also offers more comprehensive weather protection than a simple softshell jacket.

But how would the Ortovox Mesola perform on the slopes, compared to the best ski jackets for men and the best ski jackets for women currently on the market? I’ve been testing it to find out.

Ortovox Mesola ski jacket: materials and design

The Ortovox Mesola stands out for its artful combination of hardshell and soft shell materials, which join forced to help mountaineers, skiers and riders temperature-regulate, while protecting them from winter weather. 

The lower back, underarms and sides of the Mesola are made from a Merino-backed softshell that’s stretchy, and water- and wind-resistant. The rest of the jacket has a waterproof breathable membrane that’s a lot like Gore-Tex but significantly more breathable. Even the waterproof breathable portions of the Mesola jacket have a Merino backer that makes it feel much more cozy and comfortable than a standard shell, partly because this jacket is so adept at managing sweat. 

Ortovox’s signature material is Merino wool, a fabric the brand uses in most, if not all, of their apparel, including in places you wouldn’t expect it – the backer on a waterproof breathable membrane, for example. They only use sustainable Merino from certified, monitored, ethical sheep farms.

Merino controls odor naturally, so this jacket didn’t get stinky even after I skinned in it all winter without washing it. Merino is also great at temperature regulation and moisture management, which further enhances this jacket’s incredible ability to adapt to conditions and be protective and warm but not sweaty.

The Mesola is climate-neutral, and produced with minimal environmental impact. Ortovox offset any carbon that making the jacket generates that the company can’t eliminate in production.

Ortovox Mesola ski jacket: on the slopes

The Ortovox Mesola was my go-to jacket for ski touring this winter, and I can’t say enough good things about it. During a week ski touring Wyoming’s Teton Pass and Grand Teton National Park, when 68 inches of snow fell in seven days, I wore this jacket every day for uphills and downhills. 

That kind of versatility saved me time at transitions. While others were layering up, I had more time for snacking, drinking and taking photos before my crew was ready to drop. I’d unzip it partially for skinning uphill, then zip it all the way, and put the hood on when the wind was blasting. 

It’s not as warm as a pure hardshell, however. So if my crew was taking a longer break on a really cold day, I’d throw a down jacket over this jacket until we were ready to go. The fit is comfortable – not flappy or binding. And the jacket has some gripper elastic at the waist to keep it in place.

I wore this jacket in dry and sunny conditions as well as snowstorms. Its waterproof panels did their job and kept me dry even when I was out for hours in heavy snowfall. When my body heat melted the snow, it didn’t get me wet. The waterproof breathable panels made it easier to brush snow off my arms and shoulders than if I was wearing a pure softshell jacket.

Elastic binding at the wrist instead of velcro tabs ensure the sleeves of this jacket are snag-free when pulling on ski gloves. I wore my warmer gloves over the sleeves, but thin and lightweight skinning gloves slid under the cuffs without a struggle.

And I really loved the oversized chest pockets, which are long and spacious. Both sides are large enough to hold a max-sized iPhone in place where I could get to it quickly for shooting photos on the slopes.

Back at home in Vermont, the Ortovox Mesola has been a great spring skiing jacket for both on-piste and off. The softshell panels prevent it from getting sweaty inside, which is inevitable with pure hardshells. And it has enough wind protection that even on the lift, in warmer temps it’s a great choice.

Goodr Snow G goggles: first impressions

It’s difficult not to have a smile on your face when you unpack Goodr Snow G goggles. The brand’s mascot is Karl the Flamingo, and he’s featured on the goggle bag, and in all the brand’s communications. When you get your goggles, whether in a store or on the internet, thanks to Karl, you’ll likely have a smile on your face before you even hit the slopes. 

Then there are the various names the brand assigns to all its eyewear, which are fun, fanciful, flighty and determinedly irreverent. For the Snow G, there are four, one for each colorway: the limited edition Neon Zebra (silver lens, black and white strap), Bunny Slope Dropout (blue lens, pink strap), Apres All Day (black lens, black and white strap), and Here For The Hot Toddies (red and yellow lens, khaki strap).

The Snow Gs come in a semi-rigid foam case which is a lot nicer than the cases that come with some of the pricier best ski goggles on the market. The Snow Gs also include a soft case decorated with Karl the pink flamingo, which holds your goggles and a spare lens. Also in the case is Goodr’s guide to proper eyewear care and maintenance, which has standard, practical and useful information on how to use and care for your new goggles, and also a whole lot of sass.

When you remove the goggles from the case they feel high quality, not at all flimsy. They feature oversized venting panels across the top and under the eyes, and the sliding strap has a silicone back to keep it from sliding off your helmet. And lastly, the thick foam around the perimeter of the goggles looks like it will conform well to a variety of face shapes.

The materials Goodr uses in the Snow G are pretty standard. Magnetic polycarbonate UV400 lenses block the sun’s harmful rays and reduce glare, and the goggles come with a second lens for low-light days. What’s remarkable about the Snow G is the quality of the materials and optics for the price.

Hitting the slopes in these goggles was a great experience. They were dark enough to make it easy to see in bright conditions, but not too dark for the overcast, variable light winter conditions typical in the Northeastern US, where I tested the Apres All Days. 

The lenses give the world a gray tint when I look through them. Lens color is a personal thing. Some make the day seem cheerier, but these were pretty neutral. The color didn’t bother me, but I do prefer a lens that pops colors a bit more. Of course, those lenses are much more expensive. 

The Snow G noticeably cut down on glare on bright days, making it easier to see. And when the light was flat or the day was dark, I swapped the primary lens for the yellow one on the go, even with gloves on. When I was wearing these goggles they felt very roomy, and comfortable. 

I often have trouble keeping goggles on all day, but these goggles were so light and comfortable I almost forgot I was wearing them. The foam conformed to my face nicely, but it’s too early to tell if it will compact or break down over time. 

In above freezing temps, while doing laps in the park, the goggles fogged. I wasn’t working overly hard when they started fogging. Above-freezing conditions are prime for goggle fogging, but not all goggles would have fogged in this scenario. I cleared the fog by taking them off for a few minutes and letting them dry.

Glade Adapt 2: first impressions

The Glade Adapt 2s are one of the fastest and easiest ski goggles to fit to my helmet that I’ve worn. They adjust from both sides and once I got them where I wanted them, the silicone-backed strap held them in place. 

When I put these on for the first time, they just felt good. That’s thanks to the triple-density foam that’s covered with fleece on the inside, and is shaped to the contours of a human face. 

Glade uses Reveal photochromic lens technology. The goggles’ lenses are polycarbonate and Glade’s frame is constructed using a lightweight TPU plastic. All Reveal photochromic lenses, regardless of color, have the same VLT (visible light transmission range) that shifts between 16% and 61%, based on what’s happening around you (but no, these don’t go to clear). In standard VLT vernacular, that’s Category 1 to Category 3.

The goggles are guaranteed fog-free. “We use our recipe of traditional anti-fog techniques,” Glade’s founder, Curt Nichols says. “Dual-lens, hydrophobic treatments, and anti-fog inner coating – we are tuned into making sure the proportions of our goggles are perfect and that is how we fight against fogging. We focus on fit ergonomics and frame flexibility to create the ideal fit and seal on the wearer. Also, we manage the proportions of the goggle itself to ensure that we have the ideal space between the wearer and the inner lens, which allows for interior temperature regulation and is huge for combating fog. Lastly, for us frame ventilation is critical. We want fresh air feeding into the goggles and as the interior air temp rises, that warmer air has ample vents through which it can escape.”

The lenses are also changeable, and they quickly and easily snap in and out. You can get replacement lenses or different color lenses sold separately. The Adapt 2 provides 100% UVA/UVB protection.

These goggles are available in two sizes: the standard Adapt 2 is best for medium to large faces, while skiers with small to medium faces should buy the Adapt 2S. Unfortunately, a hard case not included as standard, but Glade sell one for $25.

Glade Adapt 2: on the slopes

I got my Glade Adapt 2s at the beginning of the 2023/24 ski season. I live in Vermont, where the local slogan is, “If you don’t like the weather wait five minutes.” The sky turns from overcast flat light to bluebird sunny and back again constantly, so photochromic goggles are a natural choice. 

I had a pile of goggles to test this season, so I didn’t reach for these first thing, but once I did, I kept reaching for them again and again. The fit is natural and comfortable. The lens is ample and gives me an unrestricted view of the slopes. And more times than not, these goggles help me see the contours of the snow better than any other goggles I had in my bag, many of which cost over $200. 

I like the flat lens look, too. I never regretted having these goggles on. With the Adapt 2s over my eyes, I forgot about my goggles and could focus on the skiing, which means the goggles are doing their job.

I’ve worn the Adapt 2s in what I’d consider to be bright conditions – including in Jackson Hole, WY, and at Powder Mountain and Snowbasin, both near Ogden, Utah – and I never felt like I wanted something that blocked even more light. I’ve also been backcountry skiing with these goggles, but I haven’t yet had a chance to spring ski with the Adapt 2s in California or Colorado, two spots where the sun’s rays can really be searing at altitude when the sun is high overhead.

I also didn’t think they needed to be any lighter. They covered the majority of conditions that I found myself skiing in, both backcountry and frontcountry in Vermont, and while traveling.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket: first impressions

If you’ve dipped your toes into many different winter sports, then you’ll know that, while it’s a nice idea to have a jacket that covers all activities, trying to find one that can be used across different disciplines is tricky. The Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket is a breathable hard shell with a fleece lining, aimed at adventurous folk who aren’t afraid to venture out in less than perfect snowy conditions – which could be ice climbers, ski tourers, mountaineers and walkers.

I tested the Shift while ski-touring in varying temperatures that ranged from a nippy -12°C / 10.4°F to a mild 7°C / 44.6°F, and experienced a wild mix of winter conditions. Ultimately, the main reason you’d look at the Storm Shift is if you’re keen on winter sports and looking for a tough Gore-Tex jacket with an incredible warmth-to-weight ratio that helps wick moisture and dries quickly.

Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket: in the field

Patagonia’s waterproof garments have always impressed me thanks to their quality construction and fit. The Storm Shift is robust and comfortable to wear as an all-day layer, made with a two-layer 100% recycled polyester Gore-Tex fabric. Using recycled polyester throughout the jacket is a big deal, while a waterproof jacket made without perfluorochemicals in the fabrics – as well as providing a durable water repellent (DWR) finish – proves that technical jackets needn’t be made at the expense of the environment. It also shows that ski jackets can be made to withstand a level of weather and water resistance whilst also being comfortable to wear for long periods of time. A unique liner (in a fuzzy zig-zag pattern) may look not much to begin with, yet I found it was surprisingly warm and able to wick moisture to provide lasting storm protection.

The Storm Shift Jacket was tested for around a month, and I found that it was resistant to scuffs and usage, although the color meant mud was easily visible. I liked the webbing toggles, and these felt like they were going to last rather than rip off as on cheaper jackets I’ve tested.

The Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket has some slightly more technical features that protect against the elements. For conditions such as skinning uphill or hiking that require dumping of heat, the pit zips have watertight, coated zippers and keep you from overheating.

For when the weather starts to hit, the Storm Shift has easily adjustable low-profile cuffs that can be secured over or under gloves to stop snow and moisture from getting in. A helmet-compatible hood is roomy enough to accommodate a bulky ski helmet, and has a laminated visor to help keep the weather out. I found the tall collar needed a bit more room to help zip up to the top of the neck and over the face, though, as this felt like it was too narrow to do right to the top.

When descending in deep snow or slushy conditions, the Storm Shift has some protection to guard against moisture getting in. Inside the jacket, a powder gasket can be cinched in or laid flat when not in use, and a webbing loop means it is compatible with any Patagonia snow pants to stop snow sneaking its way down the back. This only really applies when you’re skiing in deep powder snow, though. A nifty little drawcord hem is easily adjusted in the inside pocket, which helps cinch the wider jacket for narrower frames. Two poppers (located in the front and the back) also protect against snow coming in.

A RECCO reflector located in the jacket gives an extra layer of security making it easier for avalanche transceivers to pick up.

A nod to a jacket with multiple pockets! Multi-use pockets are located throughout the Storm Shift – two zippered handwarmer pockets, a zippered chest pocket, zippered forearm pocket, interior zippered pocket and an interior drop-in pocket provide ample room for snacks, phone, map and tissues. The only thing I’d like to have seen improved would have been a slightly deeper chest pocket to accommodate a bigger phone and/or additional items, as this is usually my go-to spot for accessing technology or useful items.

It’s worth noting the Patagonia Storm Shift is slightly wider than a ‘typical’ jacket I’ve owned, with a wider cut at the hip, and enough material around the shoulders to move my arms. Designed to complement a rider’s natural movement, the Storm Shift is meant to be big enough to move around without the jacket riding up. I tested and wore a size medium jacket, which I think is true to size, as I wanted to have a jacket I could wear layers underneath.

As a Patagonia jacket, it should come as no surprise that the Storm Shift has glowing eco credentials, made in a factory that supports workers’ rights and ensures a fair trade has taken place. Both the shell and the lining have been made with recycled polyester, while the outer shell fabric is bluesign approved and made without harmful perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs/PFAS.) It’s a great step forwards to see Patagonia embrace recycled materials throughout its whole range and a delight to see garments withstanding the same levels of testing without causing damage to the environment through the manufacturing process.

SunGod Ullrs: first impressions

According to Norse mythology, Ullr – the stepson of Thor – was the god of snow, an expert skier, skater and hunter. It’s an apt inspiration for the SunGod Ullrs, boasting new snow lenses that use 8KO technology which, SunGod claims, improves clarity while also maintaining durability and scratch resistance.

The SunGod Ullrs (available to buy direct from SunGod) offer the choice of a slightly pricier 8KO lens over a standard lens, with the use of nylon as a lens material, which is lighter, tougher and clearer than traditional polycarbonate lenses. As for sun and UV protection, rest assured all SunGod sunglasses and goggles protect 100% from UV rays, regardless of the visible light transmission (VLT) rating of the lenses. For the test, I wanted to try a relatively high VLT rating – not a particularly dark lens – as I wanted something that could be worn in dull and flat light. SunGod offers a wide range of lens colors, from Fire (11% VLT) and Silver Blue (9% VLT) which are a darker tint, to the High-Vis Blue which has a VLT rating of 38% for dull, flat white light days.

The photochromatic lenses in the range such as Smoke automatically adjust dependent on light, so if the skies are clear the lenses will adjust their tint and VLT. Conversely, if the light if flat and dull, the VLT will adjust to become higher, offering better visibility in poorer weather. Overall, it’s important to wear the correct lens for the appropriate weather conditions and as a winter climber and skier from the UK, having a low visibility lens is a much more practical choice.

Most ski helmets can be wider than climbing and bike helmets, and to help with this the SunGod Ullrs have a generous strap, with a Grip-Lock silicone backing that ensures the goggles adhere to the shiny helmet plastic.

SunGod offers a lifetime guarantee for its products and excellent customer service that will offer to service or fix a damaged component. The goggles are also easy to swap with interchangeable lenses for further customisation.

SunGod is a member of 1% for the Planet and is certified carbon neutral, with its detailed impact report naming the ways in which they are committed to reducing their carbon output. As a brand, SunGod has also built a business model that puts people, planet, and profit on equal footing.

With this in mind, I was impressed to learn about the ways in which they’ve considered longevity in the design of the Ullrs, from using frames that flex instead of snapping to screwless hinges that remove weak points, triple-layer scratch-resistant lens coatings and capsule designs rather than seasonal collections.

SunGod Ullrs: in the field

Working in northern Iceland, where daylight in winter ranges from a little over four hours a day in December and January to rapidly advancing longer days in March, it’s not unusual to experience multiple seasons in a day from temperatures around -14°C / 7°F to 7°C / 45°F, which demand the use of ski goggles in a variety of winter conditions. I tested the SunGod Ullrs while out ski touring, and was surprised at how comfortable and how well made they were. Using a compact goggle geometry, the lenses sit within a frame that fits neatly over ski helmets and full-face helmets while snowmobiling. The shape of the lens protects all round to help reduce glare and improve spatial awareness, which was noted when the wind started to pick up and I was getting ready to commit to some steep snow descents at the top of the backcountry mountain slopes.

The SunGod Ullrs proved to be a reliable pair of goggles, despite being in my bag alongside other tools and attaching to my helmet all day. They come with a goggle pouch that doubles up as a lens cloth, but I’d also recommend using a lens cover to add extra protection.

Comfort wise, the SunGod Ullrs are a universal fit and can suit head shapes from small through to extra-large thanks to their clever design. I found the Ullrs comfortable to wear even after a full day of skiing, thanks to the triple layer of foam providing a snug fit, whilst a flexible TPU frame hugged my face without sitting too close. The Grip-Lock silicon strap helped keep the goggles attached to the helmet without any slippage, meaning I was less likely to lose them when stopping for a quick break.

The SunGod Ullrs use a frame that has been designed with cleverly thought-out vents to help improve ventilation and reduce snow and moisture access. This means no having to take the goggles off and clumsily wipe away beads of moisture halfway through the day – a bonus if weather conditions deteriorate and the goggles become an even more essential piece of kit to safely navigate off the mountains. For glasses users, the Ullrs are a widely adaptable fit so can be worn over the top of glasses, although I prefer to wear contact lenses so as to not risk any fogging while skiing.

Been skiing hard this season? Your gear might be starting to get a little ripe. While your ski jacket and ski pants aren’t the type of clothing that requires as frequent washing as your running shorts or fleece jacket, with heavy use they’ll eventually need freshening up to remove those snow and beer stains from fun days on the hill.

Unlike some outdoor gear, your ski gear isn’t all that difficult to wash, but you will want to follow certain procedures to make sure it doesn’t end up damaged by the machine or losing its waterproofing capabilities.

Keeping your outdoor gear clean helps it perform optimally, so whether you just want a fresh set of clothes for your next ski day or you’re packing your kit up for the season, read on for an easy guide to washing your ski jacket and pants.

How to wash your ski jacket and pants 

Before you get started, please note that the following instructions are general guidelines for synthetic waterproof ski jackets and pants. If you’re wearing down clothing for skiing, you’ll want to follow our guide to how to wash a down jacket. 

1. Read the labels 

Before you get started, if your ski clothes still have the care labels (or you can find instructions online), read them and follow them to a T. This will ensure the optimal care for your garment. If you’re not able to find this information, the following should get your gear spruced up without causing any harm. 

2. Prepare your jacket and pants 

Ski pants and jackets are generally heavy in pockets, zips, buckles and velcro straps. Those pockets are usually filled with items like your ski pass, headphones, ski gloves and granola bars – you know, things you don’t want to wash – while fasteners can damage your clothes if they’re not fasteners. 

Before washing anything, empty all pockets, fasten all zips, straps and buckles and turn your clothing inside out.

3. Machine wash 

You’ll be pleased to know that you can usually machine wash your ski gear, but don’t just throw your gear in with all your other clothing and towels on a hot wash. Wash your ski clothes separately on a synthetic cycle (30°C with a low spin around 800). You can probably use normal or gentle detergent, but don’t use fabric softener as it’s bad for the waterproofing treatment on your clothing. 

4. Dry your clothes 

Take your clothes out of the machine as soon as the wash cycle has finished and leave them inside out to dry them. If you have a dryer, you can use a gentle setting (no more than 40°C) to dry them and reactivate the DWR treatment. If your clothes aren’t fully dry at the end of one cycle, hang them up to finish drying them. 

If you don’t have a dryer, hang up and air dry your clothes then use a warm (not hot) iron, without any steam, on your clothes to reactivate the waterproof treatment. Your ski gear is now ready for another day on the mountain, or to be packed away until next season. 

• How to wash ski gloves

If it moves, give it an electric power assist seems to be the trend right now. After e-cars, e-buses, e-vans, e-planes, e-bikes, e-scooters, e-snowboards, e-skates and presumably many others we can’t remember (has anyone created e-trekking poles yet?).

Now we have e-skis. And they don’t even need snow. 

Hang on, doesn’t that just make the fancy, oversized e-skates? The French company that created them doesn’t think so. SKWHEEL reckons that the SKWHEEL-ONE – which it claims is the world’s first true electric ski – will give you an authentic skiing experience on dry land, with speeds of up to 50mph (on private land; there’s a speed limiter for elsewhere).

The SKWHEEL-ONE is currently being crowdfunding on Indiegogo and has already reached 148% of its goal. Preorders are available now and the company predicts that the SKWHEEL-ONE will go into production in April with deliveries starting by June.

Each of the skis is powered by a four-wheel drive system with 600 watts per motor, for 2,400 watts of total power combined. They can tackle urban asphalt, mountain trails or sandy beaches. A single charge will last 18 miles, but if you want to ski for longer the Lithium-ion batteries are easily swappable. Depleted batteries can be recharged in only two hours.

There are four different speeds and electronic braking controlled by what’s best described as a handheld remote with an LED screen. Mechanical braking is also built in for reliable emergency stops and controlled, stable deceleration. They even have front and rear lights.

The handle-shaped remote control also has a telescopic handle you can plug into the skis so that you can pull them along like a wheelie suitcase.

With a composite and carbon fiber chassis for flexibility and strength, the SKWHEEL-ONE weighs 27.5lb. 

According to SKWHEEL, the product’s innovative swivel 175mm inflatable tires deliver authentic glide and the ability to carve with precision and fluidity on any surface, accurately mimicking what it feels like to ski on snow (although we await the reviews from actual skiers to see how far that claim holds true – though they’re probably going to be great fun however authentic the experience).

A snowboard-inspired binding system ensures an excellent foothold for total control and can be worn with regular shoes.

Available from SKWHEEL’s own website the launch price is a discounted $1,842 (US) / €1,700 (Europe).

• The best women’s winter boots: for comfort and warmth in the snow

Skiing is usually an activity done in cold and snow conditions, although there will be times when temperatures are warmer due to sunshine, or because you have built up heat though exertion. This article will focus on downhill skiing, which generally requires better insulation for participants, although there are other skiing disciplines such as back country skiing, which would normally see skiers wearing lighter weight shell or waterproof jackets.

A ski jacket needs to keep you warm when temperatures plummet on the slopes, but also allow some heat  to escape when you warm up. 

Skiers might also demand a jacket that is waterproof or, at least, water resistant because ski weather can include snow and rain. The chances are you will need protection from the snow, too, if you take a tumble.

An insulated ski jacket can vary in price from under £100 to many hundreds of pounds. In our best ski jackets guide and best women’s ski jacket guide the prices are wide ranging. As an example, the cheapest men’s – or unisex – ski jacket that we have reviewed is the Wedze Men’s Warm Ski Jacket, sold by Decathlon at a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of £89.99. The most expensive ski jacket in this best of guide is the Arc'teryx Rush Jacket at RRP £600. 

When it comes to our women’s ski jackets reviews, there are several in the more budget-friendly bracket, including a TOG24 Anvil Jacket at £120, as well as several jackets in the £200 brackets, such as the OOSC 1080 Ski & Snowboard Jacket at £199, as well as  the Keela Munro is jacket and a DC Liberate Snowboarding Jacket both priced £200. At the other end of the scale, Helly Hansen sells their Verbier Infinity Jacket for around £600.

We consider whether you can rely on a budget ski jacket, or if you should pay more for reliability.

What makes ski jackets so expensive?

There are several reasons why some ski jackets are more expensive than others. To start with, you might notice that there are differences of prices across brands. In our guides, companies like Arc’Teryx, Helly Hansen, Artilect, Picture, Mammut and Schöffel command higher prices. In some cases, a brand’s reputation for quality will provide the opportunity for charging more for a product.

Some skiers also like to be seen in a well-known “label” on the slopes and so they will choose a brand that they feel epitomises that. For example, Picture and Schöffel are big ski apparel brands.

It’s true, too, that research and development can push up ski jacket prices. The companies that invest in new designs and product performance will usually charge more for their products.

Then there’s the design, materials and features of a ski jacket to consider. You will pay more for a high quality insulation – there are pros and cons of down versus synthetic insulation, too – or for Gore-Tex waterproofing. 

A ski jacket with extra details could well be pricier, such as a snow-skirt (to stop snow getting up inside the jacket if you fall), a detachable or helmet compatible hood, a two-way front zip, a zipped pocket for your ski pass, a Recco reflector, pit zips for ventilation and other insulation improving concepts, such as Columbia’s Omni-Heat technology.

It’s worth noting that companies that aim to decrease their impact on the environment, such as using recycled materials, more eco-friendly designs and responsibly sourced down, will probably charge more for a ski jacket. 

Do you even need an expensive ski jacket for your activities?

Do you ski multiple days or weeks each year? Do you live close to the ski slopes and spend much of your winter on skis? Do you like to take you skiing to more challenging levels, including back country ski touring and ski mountaineering? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, it might be that it is worth spending more on a ski jacket because you will probably be looking for better technology, more features and a jacket that will be durable.

Skiers who will be skiing in tough conditions, such as snow, rain and wind, might also think about a more expensive jacket to ensure higher quality insulation and waterproof fabrics.

But you probably don’t “need” to buy an expensive ski jacket just because it is a certain “brand”. This is a matter of preference and personally rated kudos. 

From our reviews, it’s possible to see that you can pay less for a jacket that still scores highly for a range of good credentials. 

In our men’s ski jackets guide the most expensive jacket is the Arc’Teryx Rush jacket at £600. This is a lightweight hard-shell jacket without insulation – so it’s good for both downhill and back country skiing if you had layers underneath to suit the activity – and boasts highlights such as a great build quality, athletic cut, and excellent weatherproofing. Our reviewer also scored it 4.5 out of five score but there are other jackets with just as good scores that are cheaper.

For example, the Rab Khroma Kinetic is also rated 4.5 out of 5 and costs £320. 

Likewise, in the woman’s ski jacket guide, the most expensive product is the Helly Hansen Verbier Infinity Jacket at £600. It does gain a top five-out-of-five score from our reviewer for good quality and fit, as well as and waterproofing, a Life Pocket that preserves your phone’s battery life and a RECCO reflector, but there are cheaper ski jackets to consider. 

However, at a lower price and also with a five-out-five score is the Helly Hansen Aphelia Lifaloft Ski Jacket at £480. There are other jackets with a good score from our reviewer but costing a third of the price of the Helly Hansen Verbier jacket.

The Keela Munro ski jacket is also waterproof and windproof with a good rating for breathability. The jacket is said to be rather heavy by our reviewer and not as warm as some others but it still gains a 4.5 score. If you are worried about warmth you could always ad lightweight insulation layer underneath or doubt le up on baselayers.

The independent brand OOSC's 1080 jacket has been rated four out of five and is also good on waterproofing and boasts venting. 

The brand is known for funky retro design so this could be popular as a cheaper option with skiers who like to look good on the slopes. In addition, the 1080 jacket is made from recycled polyester so it gains eco brownie points.

DC’s Liberate jacket is aimed at snowboarders and also scores four out of a possible five. It is well insulated and has a high than average waterproof rating so it will keep you warm and dry in all kinds of skiing weather. 

Our reviewer liked this jacket for good looks, although they also noted the exterior pockets were not located in the best positions. 

When deciding on whether you need to buy an expensive ski jacket, you’ll need to work out what you are most looking for and whether there are compromises you are prepared to make. 

We recommend that you make sure the jacket is well insulated and waterproof – hopefully at least 10,000mm hydrostatic head – and with the features that are important to your type of skiing  or snowboarding, such as a snow-skirt and vented armpits. Where savings can be made is by choosing a cheaper brand of jacket.

Which brands can you recommend for budget ski jackets? 

Looking at our ski jacket reviews, there are a number of products that are rated four-out-of-five by our reviewers yet still have an RRP of around £200 or less. 

This includes the cheapest ski jacket in our guides, the Wedze Men’s Warm Ski Jacket, sold by Decathlon at £89.99. It has a lower score of 3.5 out of five but was still rated by our reviewer for being good value, very warm and including a good pocket layout and snow- skirt.

With a 4.5/5 score and a price of £120, the TOG24 Anvil Jacket for women includes a water-repellent treatment and is rated for warmth with recycled insulation. It is let down by fewer size choices than other brands and no waterproofing but for anyone who is thinking about taking up skiing and plans to ski in good weather only, then this could be a good choice at a budget-friendly price. 

There is also the OOSC 1080 Ski & Snowboard Jacket at £199. The Keela Munro ski jacket for women RRPs at £200, as does the DC Liberate Snowboarding Jacket.

You could take a look at all of these more budget-friendly brands to see if there are other ski jacket options for men women and children to suit your requirements.
