The latest collaboration between The North Face and Japanese fashion brand Undercover wants you to connect with nature and hit the trails in style.

Now available on The North Face website, the fourth 'Soukuu' line features trail running and hiking gear designed to maximize your performance and help you to move in harmony with your environment.

The collaboration's philosophy of finding "inward stillness and meditation in motion" is materialized in a high-tech, waterproof range of hiking and trail running garments and footwear.

The North Face / Undercover collaboration features 12 different items: six for hiking and six for trail running.

The hiking range includes multiple garments and a backpack suited to multi-day trips in the wilderness.

The North Face Summit Series Pro 120 Crew: first impressions 

A thermal base layer is an essential piece of kit for anyone who likes venturing into alpine areas, but not all base layers are created equal. While many opt for the magical benefits of merino wool, some, like the The North Face Summit Series Pro 120 Crew, recognize that synthetic materials can have their merits when you want long lasting protection from the elements.

This base layer is soft and light against the skin, but it has a secret weapon that ensures it is both warm in cold weather and helps you efficiently manage sweat once you layer up and get moving. What The North Face calls Double-Knit DotKnit Fabric is two layers of very light material with engineered holes in the face fabric to help sweat move away from your skin, so you don't get chilled when the going gets tough and you stay comfortable if it's milder than you expect outside. That means, unlike some synthetic tops, this one doesn't feel clammy and it dries in an instant when you get sweaty.

Two of the main issues with synthetic tops are that the material is essentially plastic, and therefore non-biodegradable, and that they can get really smelly as compared to wool tops. This one is made using 100% recycled fabric, for a kinder footprint, and it's treated with anti-odor protection. We've found we can get a few wears out of it before it inevitably starts to pong.

It's got a slim fit, which seems to make up for the lack of stretch (which in turn means it should keep its shape longer) and has long sleeves with thumb holes for added hand protection, and is a good length for decent coverage.

It's not exactly cheap, but compared to other base layers we've tested, it's about middle of the price range, and while it's definitely aimed at colder weather adventures where you'll be wearing it with other layers, on its own it could make a decent top even on chillier summer adventures.

The North Face Summit Series Pro 120 Crew: in the field 

I got this base layer to test out on a whirlwind trip to Courmayeur where, among other things, I got to attend the launch of Jeep Avenger 4Xe TNF edition and do some glacier hiking in whiteout conditions. Since then, I've been wearing it all winter here in Scotland for hiking.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a small, which is my usual size, and it's a perfect fit. It doesn't have any stretch, but I don't have any problems getting it on and off and of course, zero stretch means it won't lose its shape, or not for a long time anyway.

It's got a longer cut so it's easy to tuck into my rain pants or just offer a little more protection from the cold around my hips, and long sleeves with thumb holes. This can be annoying when trying to look at my GPS watch of course, but it also means added hand protection when it's cold.

It's well designed with raglan sleeves and not tight around my shoulders or middle so it's comfortable in fit as well as being soft against my skin, but the slim fit means it's also easy to layer with mid layers like my Houdini Power Hoody.

Temperature regulation

I usually swear by merino wool for my first layer, but I've been venturing out into synthetic tops this winter with a fair degree of success. This one doesn't initially feel like a thermal top, but upon closer inspection I realized that the double layer does hold in heat, and I was happy to have it on an alpine glacier as well as up multiple Scottish Munros this winter.

The double layer of DotKnit Fabric is really just tiny holes in the face fabric, but it seems to work a charm. The brand claims this speeds up moisture transfer from skin to surface and of course I can't say for sure that it does, but I can say that I can hike up a steep mountain wearing this with a fleece and waterproof and never feel damp or clammy, which is all I can ask for.

Like a lot of The North Face's tops in recent years, it also dries astonishingly quickly when my back has got sweaty from carrying a pack, which is another big bonus in colder weather.

Odor control and other features

I've grown a bit skeptical when it comes to claims of odor-control in synthetic tops. Synthetic materials just get smelly. But that said, I can tell that some effort has been made to mitigate this eventuality, and I've worn this several times before I've felt I needed to wash it, which is a good start.

Other than that and the thumb holes, there aren't any other great special features to speak of when it comes to this base layer.

The North Face Summit Series Pro 120 Crew: the bottom line 

If you're looking for a synthetic, technical base layer, you won't find much to argue with here. This top is excellent for high output adventures in cold weather where you want to stay warm, manage moisture and dry off quickly. It's probably too warm for summer pursuits, but if you're in a chillier climate or find yourself at altitude, it's fairly protective on its own.

Three heli-skiers who were killed by a giant avalanche in BC were ski industry leaders, according to reports.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) says the slide occurred on the east side of Kootenay Lake just before 1pm on Monday.

"Two groups of skiers had just finished skiing the bowl and were waiting in a staging area below the tree line of Clute Creek water shed. A transport helicopter was nearing the group when the pilot observed an avalanche and sounded the siren. One group of skiers was able to run out of harms way, while the other group of four was swept away into the tree line."

Avalanche Canada reports that the size 3 avalanche killed three men in the group, while a fourth was critically injured.

Local company Stellar Heliskiing has released a statement acknowledging that the group consisted of its guests and a guide, who has since been identified by the Vancouver Sun as its owner Jason Remple, 53, one of those who perished.

"The entire team at Stellar Heli Skiing extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts remain with them during this incredibly difficult time."

Also killed were Whistler-based pro snowboarder Jeff Keenan, 44, who founded the snowboard company Dinosaurs Will Die, and Alex Pashley, 45, from Idaho, who was Global Sports Marketing Manager (Snow) at The North Face.

"We’re heartbroken to share the loss of our friend and colleague. Alex Pashley’s curiosity and kindness left a mark on everyone who had the privilege of working, riding, and running alongside him," writes TNF on Instagram.

Mark Jennings-Bates, manager of Kaslo Search and Rescue, tells the Vancouver Sun that all three men were “very, very proficient" in the backcountry.

This incident takes place just three weeks after three heli-skiers were buried by a 100-foot deep avalanche in Alaska, in the deadliest avalanche in the US since 2023. There have been no reports that their bodies have been recovered.

Avalanche safety

Backcountry skiing and snowboarding carry a higher risk of avalanches than resort skiing, and incidents like these show that even experience and the best equipment may not be enough to save you, particularly during spring conditoins. To minimize your risk, before embarking on any backcountry skiing, it's recommended you take an avalanche safety course where you'll learn how to read an avalanche forecast.

The North Face continues its ambitious expansion into the world of trail running with the release of four new shoes that have already proved their worth on the podium.

The Vectiv 3.0 series was officially unveiled at the Transgrancanaria in February, rolling out the brand's latest innovations in the trail running line that centers around a carbon plate for stability and energy return, rocker midsole geometry for propulsion and a high-traction outsole that the brand says turns that energy return into momentum. Every shoe in the lineup features a neutral 6mm drop and a 3D-printed upper that the brand says is more durable.

First up, let's talk about the shoe that's already proven itself to be a podium-grabber. The Summit Vectiv Pro 3 was on the feet of both Jonathan Albon and Josh Wade as they took second and third place respectively at this year's Transgrancanaria 126k classic race. It was also worn by Jennifer Lichter who won the women's marathon distance at the same event for the second year running.

So what's new? Compared to its predecessor, the Vectiv Pro 2 (worn and loved by none other than Katie Schide), the Pro 3 has an extra layer of super-high rebound Dream foam which gives the shoe a slightly higher stack, at 43mm in the heel.

Some runners found the first Pro created some pinching in the forefoot because of its stiffness and due to the design of the wings on the carbon plate, so the new model has been reconfigured to solve that problem. In an early sneak preview of the line back in November, Senior Product Merchandising Manager at The North Face Tristan Chate told us that of the four shoes, this is the most optimized for energy return and efficiency on race day. The Summit Vectiv Pro 3.0 is available now for $250/ £225.

If you're a slower runner looking for the maximum amount of cushioning for long days on the trail, the Vectiv Enduris 4 is the plushest option of the four shoes. Featuring that Dream nitrogen-TPU midsole for increased propulsion and stability, Chate tells us the Enduris 4 is actually more similar to previous Pro than it is to the previous Enduris. It's still well-stacked at 41mm in the heel and it's considerably cheaper than the Pro at just $160/ £145.

Just to keep us on our toes, Chate says the new Vectiv Infinite 3 is more similar to the old Enduris 3 than the Infinite 2s. Designed for high performance on a variety of surfaces including technical terrain, it sports a more modest 29mm stack under the heel and has added more aggressive 5 mm Surface Ctrl lugs for wet and muddy conditions. It's available for $160 / £145.

Finally, if you're entering any races this year, the Summit Vectiv Sky 2 is the lightest shoe in the range, tipping the scales at just 8.3 ounces for US men's size 9 which is lighter than almost every pair of trail running shoes we've tested barring the inov-8 TrailFly Ultra G 300 Max and Merrell Skyfire 2s.

This is the most technical and minimal shoe in the new lineup with 32mm under the heel for days when you want to rip it up on the trail. We loved the original version of these shoes for their lightweight breathability and lockdown fit and can't wait to get these out on the trail, even if they are still on the pricey side at $200 / £180.

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots: first impressions 

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots are lightweight mountaineering boots that are capable of providing protection for winter hiking, alpine climbing and glacier trekking.

These winter hiking boots may not be as heavy or rugged-looking as some, but the stiff sole and Vibram technology makes for reliable footing whether you're edging along a rocky scramble or kicking into snow. If the snow gets deep enough that you need additional traction, they're compatible with a C2 crampon thanks to a heel bail.

For warmth, we've found these boots to be mostly adequate for winter conditions, but not the warmest winter boots out there. For that reason, we think they're great for high alpine trekking in milder conditions, and your feet are protected from wet and damp thanks to a breathable waterproof Futurelight membrane. There's also plenty of protection for your feet and toes thanks to a well-reinforced upper.

The fit and toe box will undoubtedly be too narrow for some and the lacing system doesn't necessarily get as secure a fit as we'd like, but the Lycra collar helps keep debris out and we've been impressed by the out-of-the-box comfort and versatility of these light but technical boots.

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots: in the field

I got these boots for a glacier trek on the Glacier du Géant in the Alps last year where it was snowy enough that I ended up wearing them with snowshoes. This year, I've been wearing them to summit some winter Munros – those are Scotland's highest peaks – in winter conditions where I've got to test out their winter and crampon capability.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort 

I always go up a half size in hiking boots, and though I was worried about the narrow toe box with these, the UK 4 fit my 3.5 feet perfectly. They look really narrow, but it's not an issue for my feet and I find that once I've got my hiking socks on and they're laced up, they have a secure fit. That said, the lacing system around the ankles doesn't quite deliver the lockdown fit I'd expect and I quite often discover my laces have come undone on the trail, but obviously laces are replaceable.

The first time I wore these was to trek across the Glacier du Géant in the Alps. Ordinarily, I'd want to break boots in for that type of excursion, but it was a whirlwind press trip and the boots were waiting for me at my hotel when I arrived. Luckily, they were and still are totally comfortable on first wear with no rubbing anywhere.

Protection and breathability

These boots are very light, but there's nothing watered down about them. The soles are super stiff so they've been great for taking on rocky sections of Munro summits, and the narrower fit makes it easier to wedge my toe into small spaces in the rock. Because the upper needs to withstand a crampon it's got plenty of reinforcements for my toes.

In Scottish winters, protection against moisture is probably the most important feature and I've found the Futurelight bootie to be ample even when I've spent a full day wading around in the snow.

They're definitely not the warmest winter boots on the market and on a recent winter trek my toes were the only thing that got a bit nippy, though keeping moving was enough to not let that ruin my day. I haven't had any issues with breathability, but I've only worn these in cold conditions and I don't have the sweatiest feet, however I have had good experiences with Futurelight's breathability in other products.

Grip and stability

Even though I've tended to wear these boots with traction devices, I spent plenty of time wearing them in the snow without crampons recently up in Glencoe and traction just wasn't an issue. The Vibram soles do what they always do and I'd trust these in most conditions.

A stiff sole doesn't make for the most intuitive gait, but it's necessary for winter and crampons. I haven't had issues with foot fatigue or stability in these boots, but again, I've mostly been climbing in snow, not just trekking along a steady trail.

The North Face Summit Breithorn Futurelight Boots: the bottom line

I'm impressed enough by the comfort and technical capabilities of these boots that I'm thinking of bringing them along for a Himalayan trek later this year. I love that they're light and comfortable but still deliver a lot of protection in winter conditions. Their light weight also makes them a good choice for adventure travel. If you're looking for something a little warmer that fits a broader foot, the Scarpa Manta Tech GTX come at a similar price point.

The North Face might have been around decades longer than up-and-coming trail running brand Hoka, but it's Hoka that seems to have cornered the market for comfortable-but-technical hiking boots in recent years. Now TNF is coming out swinging, with a brand new hiking boot drop that looks to have taken its cues from popular styles like the Hoka Kaha hiking boots.

Hot on the heels of the Summit Series Offtrail released in December, The North Face Offtrail Hike LT Mid GTX boots sport the same rocker sole as the Kahas for a smoother walking experience and a similar trainer-style aesthetic that hints at comfort over long distances. But like the Kahas, which launched in their third iteration at the end of 2024, they've got some surprisingly technical details.

The North Face Summit Series Patrol Gore-Tex Gloves: first impressions 

The North Face Summit Series Patrol Gore-Tex Gloves are burly, but not bulky or heavy. These mountaineering gloves boast the rugged advantages of a leather shell to stand up against rock and rope, extra padding on the knuckles and a Gore-Tex waterproof lining all in a lightweight and comfortable construction.

The Heatseeker Eco Pro High-Performance Synthetic Insulation has worked for us in whiteout conditions at high altitude while the soft fleece lining is breathable enough that you can wear them in milder conditions too. Curved fingers mean you can wear them comfortably all day long.

In addition to weather protection, mountaineering gloves really need to be easy to get on and off in a hurry, and without being dropped, and this pair has all the bells and whistles needed to keep them functional. Wrist leashes ensure you can remove them to take photos or check your GPS without losing them and a cuff pull makes them easy to get on in a hurry or over liner gloves. There's also a carabiner loop on the ring finger if you want to attach them to your pack and keep them close to hand.

A soft nose wipe on the thumb means there's no need to go digging for tissues when you're climbing up a steep slope and your nose is running faster than your legs.

These gloves are more about protection than they are about dexterity, and you shouldn't expect to be able to operate your phone with them, but you can adjust the buckles on your ski boots no problem.

If you compare them to a pair of ski gloves, they're eye-wateringly expensive, but bear in mind these are meant for alpine expeditions where you'll face the toughest conditions. If that's what's next for you, you'll be warm and comfortable in these gloves, but if you're just going hiking, they're overkill.

The North Face Summit Series Patrol Gore-Tex Gloves: in the field 

I first tested these gloves out in whiteout conditions in the Italian Alps during a glacier trek. I also took them to Verbier recently for a ski trip where I wore them for both alpine skiing and ski touring, and have even worn them on a few frigid hikes and for a long day of Nordic skiing during the coldest January in 15 years here in Scotland.

Here's how they performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

Though the rest of me is quite small, I have long fingers which occasionally means small gloves don't fit, however, I tested these in a small and they're a perfect fit. There's about a centimeter of extra space at the tip of each finger and they're close-fitting without inhibiting my ability to bend and stretch my fingers. I haven't needed to wear them with liner gloves as they're quite warm enough, but there's room to do so without sizing up.

They have a nice, soft fleece lining with no annoying seams to rub, and I've been able to wear them for long periods without feeling like I need to take them off. The fingers are designed with so-called Precurve which is exactly what it sounds like and seems a bit gimmicky, but since they're quite tough gloves, I think it actually does help that my hands and fingers can just relax when I'm wearing them. It feels nice anyway.

Temperature regulation and moisture management

The first time I wore these was my coldest adventure in them, as we ascended the famous Skyway Monte Bianco in Italy to Punta Helbronner at 11,300 feet where we emerged to whiteout conditions for our glacier trek. I couldn't resist taking my gloves off a lot to take photographs and, yes, my fingers quickly froze when I did, but I was pleased at how quickly and effectively they warmed back up when I put them back on.

Since they had kept me warm and safe at such high altitude in bad weather, I figured they were a safe bet for a ski trip to Verbier, and they were for my first day of alpine skiing. The next day I decided to rent an AT setup and go touring uphill, however, and the weather was relatively mild but these were the only gloves I had. Would they be too warm?

I was pleased to discover that they're really breathable, so even though I could have done most of the tour with no gloves, I was quite comfortable wearing them and it meant my hands got some protection from my poles.

Durability and other details

These gloves are certainly built to last and I'd expect to be able to wear them for years, even for rocky scrambles, roped ascents and handling mountaineering gear like ice axes and crampons.

This isn't true for all gloves, but they're easy to pull on thanks to the cuff pull and easy to secure with a hook and loop fastening that seems to work even when I'm wearing multiple layers. I'm a big fan of using the wrist leash so I don't drop them when I'm taking photographs.

I haven't used the carabiner tab on the ring finger, but it's probably handy for keeping them more closely secured to a pack than using the wrist leash. There's also a nose wipe, if that's your sort of thing. There is a wrist leash, but it's not elasticated and when I wore these gloves on a winter Munro, I did find that it wasn't very functional.

Do these gloves do what they promise? Absolutely. They're ultra warm, breathable, waterproof, tough and comfortable.

Are they worth the price? If you're going mountaineering and want a pair of gloves that will stand up to the toughest conditions and keep you safe and warm, then you might consider them, especially if you have money to burn.

Unimaginably steep lines where one caught edge will send you hurtling into the frigid ocean. Days of sailing through rough waters as pods of orcas circle nearby. Some pretty hands-off parenting. All this and more await you in the new adventure film, In a Lifetime, which chronicles a five-week expedition to Antarctica by snowboarder Xavier de le Rue, his younger brother Victor and his teenage daughter Mila.

Directed by Jérôme Tanon and produced in collaboration with The North Face, in just 44 minutes this diary-style documentary covers epic mountaineering in the more remote place on earth, previously untouched lines, climate change and family dynamics, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Antarctica.

It makes it a little difficult to know where to start when I sit down with Xavier and Mila to discuss the project with them. So I go with the obvious – how does it feel to you take your 18-year-old daughter into such a remote and challenging environment?

“It’s not like just going on holiday with your daughter. There's an objective, so it's a completely different mindset,” explains Xavier.

The weeks and months before the expedition were filled with worries about what he calls the “nightmare scenarios” – boats sinking during the five-day traverse across the choppy Drake Passage, a stretch of water between Chile and Antarctica that’s considered one of the most treacherous voyages in the world. But when it came to Mila’s initiation into big mountain free riding on steep couloirs and exposed faces that saw the 18-year-old breaking down in tears as snow ominously slides away under her skis?

“I always felt pretty relaxed,” says Xavier.

“I have a big trust in her and it's funny, I'm not scared when I see her skiing because I know how she reacts and I'm very confident about this.”

The famed big mountain snowboarder is a three-time champion of the Freeride World Tour, as is Vincent. Mila already looks set to follow in their footsteps, but this expedition saw her using gear like crampons and an ice axe for the first time. Learning to use technical equipment for the first time in such a high-stakes scenario and there’s no mountain rescue to come and bail you out would be a challenge for anyone, much less a teenager.

“The cool thing is that on a trip like this she could have gone downhill, but she pulled herself together,” says Xavier.

For him, the trip was all about overcoming fear now he’s reached an age where he finds his friends are taking fewer and fewer risks.

Put three family members together for five weeks on any boat and you’d expect a little family drama – “she’s a bit defiant with me” says Xavier of their relationship now Mila's reached her teenage years – but the trio manages to get on remarkably well despite danger, seasickness and hangovers.

“You don't have time to get on each other's nerves because you always have targets, the boat is always moving so you always have new areas with new objectives with new things,” says Xavier, who also describes the crossing as “five days of hell.”

Despite the film’s name, Xavier previously skied the epic line known as The Captain in Antarctica 12 years ago, but this time he wanted share it with his brother – he says they’ve lived parallel lives due to their 10-year age gap. The result is no ordinary ski film, seeing the family hike through a penguin colony to begin one ascent and sail through massive icebergs in search of new lines.

“It feels like a dream, being there,” says Mila, who turned 18 during the expedition.

It’s no surprise that the film also comments on climate change – Xavier is the host of the Sustainability Dialogues podcast and has long been a mouthpiece for the climate crisis. The trio sails to Vernadsky, a Ukrainian research base where marine and climate scientists reveal that even far from human intervention, seawater has warmed 4°C in the last 80 years.

They also used the trip to properly test out their new line of technical ski and snowboarding gear – designed from recycled materials that can be turned back into new raw materials at the end of their life cycle. The North Face A-68a collection has been five years in the making.

“The idea was, for once, to embrace one of those collaborations with my sponsors to being able to make something which actually mattered, which was not just a marketing ploy,” says Xavier, who admits frustration that one of the hardest parts of being a spokesperson for climate change is the innate conflict involved with manufacturing and travel.

When I ask for his advice on practicing sustainability in skiing and in life, his suggestion is “just to get better.”

“Analyze yourself and try to get interested and try to talk about it with your friends and see what they do and see what you can do. If you fly, try to fly a bit less, if you eat meat, try to eat a bit less. But who am I to say that? Because I am consuming like everyone else.”

This down jacket checks all those boxes with a superior warmth-to-weight ratio, thoughtful technical details and some sustainable features to keep you on the move in alpine zones.

The North Face Summit Series Breithorn Hooded Down Jacket: in the field 

I first got to test out this jacket in the terrain that inspired it – the Alps between Italy and Switzerland. Though it was only November, at over 11,300 feet we experienced whiteout conditions on a glacier trek and I needed full mountaineering kit. I wore this with a hardshell over the top and fleece underneath and since then, I've been wearing it for some extremely cold hikes in the UK.

Here's how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a Small which is my usual size and I'd say it fits true to size. It is, however, designed for technical climbing and is meant to be worn as a mid layer, so I think it's important to stress that it has quite a slim fit compared to some down jackets. That makes it perfect for climbing and for layering, but I'm not totally sure how well it would work for those with curvier physiques or broader shoulders.

For me, it's really comfortable and cozy, thanks to such soft shell fabric and the design which makes movement easy. I can zip it all the way up with no chafing and easily raise my arms over my head, bend and stretch.

Warmth, breathability and protection

With 800 fill power down, this jacket really is quite toasty, and it's one of those ones that when worn with a shell is practically guaranteed to keep you comfortable. I experience some pretty challenging, cold and snowy conditions in the Alps, but with this jacket (and the rest of my layers) I was actually quite happy. The only part of me that got cold were my hands and that's because I kept removing my gloves to take photos.

I really love the stretchy wrist gaiters, because they keep a draft out and they make it easy to wear this jacket with any gloves. My only complaint about them is that they're hard to push up if I want to check my GPS watch.

Also, the hood is helmet-compatible, which is my experience can mean it's huge, but this one is surprisingly snug even when I don't cinch it, which actually means I hike without a hat if I want to.

As for breathability, it's a little hard to say because I have only worn this jacket when it's really, really cold out since that's what it's built for. For that reason, I've never struggled with getting overly sweaty and can't say whether I would if it were milder out.

It's nice that the jacket is treated with DWR for some wet weather protection, though like I keep saying I've only worn this as a mid layer with a waterproof jacket over the top so I haven't got to test that out besides the obligatory "lab test" of spraying it with water to see it bead.

Weight and storage

This is a pretty light down jacket, made all the more surprising by how warm it is. The only one I know of that's lighter is the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded Jacket. If I were taking another trip where I needed mountaineering equipment, I wouldn't think twice about packing this.

I love that it has loads of great pockets, including two inner pockets big enough for maps, and a chest pocket with a hidden pocket inside it that I've used for hotel room keys. It all means that I can easily access my phone and other gear while wearing a backpack.

This jacket is a seriously high-performing technical down jacket. If you're going into higher alpine zones and need protection, it's an excellent layer for warmth and climbing. That said, it is eye-wateringly expensive and if you really only need a down jacket for more casual hiking and camping in cold weather, you could get away with the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded Jacket or Rab Infinity Microlight Down Jacket which are both warm, but a bit cheaper.

The North Face Summit Series Futurefleece hooded jacket is a super-lightweight and well-designed mid layer from the American outdoor powerhouse. Designed for mountaineers and lightweight backpackers, it’s billed as being able to ‘optimize body temperature’ thanks to ‘innovative technology’, and comes with a bunch of features that are set to improve your experience in the outdoors.

That said, The North Face are also the stand-out leaders in the outdoors industry when it comes to marketing . So how good is this fleece jacket, really? Or is this just another product of fancy marketing?

To start with, it’s worth highlighting the jacket’s price. Coming in at $170 (US) / £135 (UK) when bought directly from The North Face, the Summit Series Futurefleece is certainly not for everybody. But for a mid layer of this type, I’d argue that it’s actually well-priced for what it is. Compare it with the Rab Ascendor or the Mountain Equipment Lumiko, for example, which are very similar jackets built for very similar escapades. Even though they might cost £25 and £55 less respectively, they both weigh around 100g more and don’t pack down as small as the Futurefleece. And when you compare it with the ever-popular Patagonia R1, which costs £5 more and weighs almost twice as much at 366 grams, the price tag suddenly becomes less shocking.

The North Face Summit Series Futurefleece: features

The Futurefleece comes with a tight-fitting hood ideal for wearing under a helmet and a raised neckline suitable for tucking your chin into to hide from biting wind. As this is so snug, I found that the hood also worked as a snood when not done up, working to keep your neck extra warm if you’re wearing this jacket in combination with a beanie or winter hat.

Additionally, the jacket also comes with thumb loops that are practically invisible when not being used. This is again something I particularly appreciated as I dislike the overly technical look of a pair of thumb holes. On this jacket, however, you get the best of both worlds: the ability to hold your sleeves in place when scrambling or climbing in a package that looks as good as it functions.

What’s more, the jacket comes with a large Napoleon pocket that’s easily big enough for an OS map, phone, charger or any other small object you need close at hand on your adventures.

Finally, the zips on The North Face Summit Series Futurefleece are of exceptional quality and impressively easy to use. They slide up and down without snagging on the material surrounding them and, thanks to the long toggles, are really easy to use even when wearing thick winter hiking gloves.

The North Face Summit Series Futurefleece: fit

The fit of the North Face Summit Series Futurefleece is best described as athletic. I loved it: It’s tight enough around the shoulders and the arms that it doesn’t rub or move when worn as a mid layer, but it’s not so tight that I feel self-conscious wearing it as an outer layer, too. My only gripe, in fact, is that the jacket feels quite long; longer than the Patagonia Triolet waterproof shell I paired this with. Therefore, when I needed to tighten everything up in a rain storm, I found that I had to pull up the bottom of the fleece slightly to tuck it under the waist cord of the jacket.

The North Face Summit Series Futurefleece: in the wild

I first got my hands on The North Face Summit Series Futurefleece hooded jacket at the start of September. Since then, I’ve worn it as a breathable outer layer on a warm wander in Bannau Brycheiniog (née, the Brecon Beacons) and as a mid layer on a handful of chilly camps. I wore it several times inside a sleeping bag on nights when I should have opted for something thicker, and I wore it on half a dozen hikes through the Utah backcountry where the temperature ranged from near-freezing to well over 70°F / 21°C. I’ve got it wet, put it up against the wind and sweated right through it on a mid-fall fastpacking trip. So I think it’s fair to say that I’m confident in my assessment of it.

Super-thin and tiny to pack away, the first thing I particularly enjoyed about this fleece is just how small and easy it is to take with you on practically any trip. Even on trail runs where I was taking a tiny pack, I was able to squash this jacket up so small that I never needed to leave it at home. Oh, and as it weighs about the same as a tube of toothpaste, so I barely noticed it was in there. In fact, in all my years of testing, the North Face Summit Series Futurefleece jacket is the lightest fleece I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying.

Regarding its performance, the Futurefleece also punches way above its weight. Even when setting up camp in temperatures of around 45°F / 7°C, I was more than comfortable in this when wearing nothing but a 260 ZoneKnit Long Sleeve Half Zip Thermal Top base layer from Icebreaker underneath it. Granted, the moment I stopped moving I got a little chilly, but this thing does a great job of boosting your warmth.

Built for mountaineering trips, it truly excels at high-intensity activity. And while I haven’t actually tested it on any high-alpine trips, I have run at least 50 miles in this jacket, and the breathability is nothing short of exceptional. Additionally, being made solely out of polyester, it dries out very quickly and keeps you warm long into the night – even after you’ve been sweating in it all day.

For a fleece this thin and light, the North Face Summit Series Futurefleece is also decent in the wind. Don’t take that to mean that it will keep you warm on a blowy summit – it won’t! – but it does a decent job at making sure you don’t immediately start shivering the minute you pop out into the wind when scrambling up a mountainside.

The North Face Summit Series Futurefleece: the bottom line

Overall, I love this mid layer. Initially, I thought no polyester fleece could ever convince me it was worth $170 / £135, but the more I wore this, the more I warmed up to the cost.

It’s versatile, comfortable and great to look at, meaning you could comfortably wear it to the office as well as out on the hill – and comes with a series of well-designed features that are a true joy to use. Being as good on a run as it is on a hike or bike ride, the Summit Series Futurefleece from The North Face may actually be the top I’d choose if I had to pick one layer for all sports for the rest of my life. Which, when you think about it, suddenly makes that seemingly pricey outlay seem reasonable.

The North Face Phantom 38 backpack: first impressions 

This backpack is built for alpine climbing missions, so The North Face has gone all in on tough fabric, a streamlined design and all the attachment points you could dream of for your winter gear, including your rope, ice axe and even skis.

At its core, the design of this backpack is pretty simple: a 38-liter cylinder that you access from the top lid, which has a small zipped pocket. Generous compression straps help you tamp down a heavy load and mean the pack is sleek for when you're struggling through deep snow or squeezing through tight spaces.

The translucent white fabric, which they explain is so you can more easily see your gear inside your pack, and may not look up to mountain adventures but don't let appearances fool you. The ripstop repels dirt as well as water and is tough enough to handle axes and crampons, while a reinforced base adds extra protection.

Once it's loaded up, the suspension system and light weight deliver a noticeably comfortable carry even when you have to wear this pack all day. The sternum strap has a built-in whistle and the hip belt boasts two small zipped pockets that won't fit a phone but will hold your multi-tool and compass.

This is one of those packs that can work for an overnight or a long day hike. It's not got as many pockets as your average hiking backpack – there are no side pockets for your water bottle, for example, but it does have a hydration bladder pouch. There's also no helmet carry, so if you're going mountaineering you'll need to save some space in the main compartment or get creative.

That said, it's robust, roomy and uncomplicated, and if you're looking for a one-pack-fits-all approach that's tough enough for alpine adventures, you could do a lot worse than this hauler.

The North Face Phantom 38 backpack: in the field

When it comes to backpacking I've already found my forever pack: the Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor. But when The North Face invited me to go glacier trekking in the Italian Alps, I knew that wasn't going to cut it. I received this pack for that cold, snowy adventure and have continued testing it out back in Scotland to see what stuff it's made of.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I'm 5'4" so I tested the S/M size of this pack and it seems to fit really well, sitting up nicely on my hips with the weight off my shoulders. The load hauler straps pull the load close which was good as I was roped between two other hikers in a line of six people total traversing the glacier on snowshoes, which can make for some tricky walking and the last thing I'd have wanted is my backpack swinging around behind me.

The first day, I ended up wearing this backpack from about 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. which isn't exactly all day, but it gave me a good indication of how comfortable it is and the answer is: very. It's extremely light, which helps a lot, and the padded back and straps provide loads of cushioning and feel great.

Storage and attachments

This backpack is cylindrical, which basically means you don't get robbed of any of that 38 liters you've been promised. I can easily pack my backpacking gear in here as well as extra layers, and in fact it's so roomy I even used it recently for a week away in a National Park where I was driving but didn't want to bring a suitcase.

That said, for day hiking, it doesn't have tons of pockets. There are no stretchy side pockets for water bottles, since this is designed for alpine environments where said water would freeze. The lid isn't massive, but it's easily enough for all my small bits and pieces of gear and the two zipped pockets on my hip belt aren't quite big enough for my phone, though I did use one for my wallet when using this as my carry on on a flight home from Geneva. But if you want to carry gear like climbing ropes and sleeping bags, you'll be happy both with the capacity and the compression, which work together to make for a fairly versatile pack.

For attachments, you can safely and easily carry your ice axe, skis and rope, but crampons will need to be packed away in the main compartment along with your helmet when you're not using them.

Durability, weather protection and other features

Because this pack is white and translucent, it's easy to think it's more fashion than function, but while it looks great, it really is made of tougher stuff than meets the eye. The bottom, which is the part of a backpack that sees the most wear and tear, is reinforced and this might not be as tough as my North Face Base Camp Duffel, it's clearly a sturdy piece of gear built to handle rugged adventures.

It's water-resistant, like most packs, and doesn't come with an integrated rain cover, but again, since it's built for alpine environments and not the Scottish Highlands, that's what I'd expect.

It comes with an integrated whistle, which is fast becoming the norm, and all of the fastenings are blissfully simple to use.

The North Face Phantom 38 backpack: the bottom line

To call this a Jack-of-all-trades backpack is a little reductive, but in many ways it's true. It's big enough and tough enough for alpine expeditions but light enough and compressible enough to make it not a totally crazy choice for a long day hike. If you're only ever going to go hiking and backpacking in fair weather on lower-lying trails, you could probably find a more suitable pack (like the Gregory Katmai 55) but if you want a pack that suits many adventures including alpine climbing, this could be your forever pack.

When The North Face athlete Alex Honnold decided to ride his bike 2,600 miles across the American West with Tommy Caldwell for a more sustainable travel approach in his new documentary The Devil’s Climb, he might have wanted to know that his sponsors were about to unveil a hybrid vehicle that would have cut weeks off their grueling journey.

We’re used to writing about the latest innovations in synthetic insulation, waterproof technology and midsoles from brands like TNF – all technology designed to help you stay protected as you go further into the backcountry on two feet. But the brand took us by surprise yesterday when it announced that its latest product isn’t a waterproof jacket or a pair of trail running shoes but instead comes with four-wheel drive.

Advnture joined The North Face in Courmayeur, Italy, under the shadow of Mont Blanc for the unveiling of the new Jeep Avenger 4Xe TNF edition, which officially arrives in 2025. Only 4,806 models of the SUV will be produced, a nod to the 4,806-meter Mont Blanc that features heavily in the design of the car, which General Manager of TNF Europe Mariano Alonso says has both “concrete and very emotional value” to the brand.

“For decades we’ve been using this territory to explore and to further evolve and to innovate and explore ways to progress in the way we are evolving in mountaineering.”

With a fair amount of high-profile controversy in recent years surrounding outdoor events partnering with car manufacturers, this collaboration might come as a surprise. Elite ultra runners Zach Miller and Kilian Jornet wrote an open letter in early 2024 questioning Dascia’s sponsorship of the UTMB (Hoka took over as title sponsor this year) and Damian Hall staged a protest against Ford Motors at the finish line of the Tors des Geants race this summer. However, representatives from TNF say they feel the collaboration is a natural fit.

“For more than half a century we have tried to nurture curiosity and an adventurous spirit,” says Alonso.

“With this partnership between Jeep and the North Face we are disrupting positively and going into new territory and we are very excited and passionate about it.”

TNF design director Darren Shooter agrees, calling the similarities between the two brands “almost scary.”

“It’s not just about brand aesthetics, it’s also about core values,” says Shooter, pointing to the “shared love for the outdoors” and passion to empower people to explore further as shared values between the iconic brands.

The two American brands have a long heritage of getting people off-road and into the backcountry, and Jeeps have long been a vehicle of choice for mountain dwellers thanks to their high clearance and four-wheel drive capability. So it arguably makes more sense than that bizarre collaboration with high fashion brand Gucci from 2021. Taking the sting out of the announcement is the news that the vehicle is a hybrid, offering a more sustainable approach to motorized travel.

So does this Jeep climb vertical rock cliff faces and Himalayan peaks like TNF athletes? Not exactly. The technical details were all placed safely in the hands of Jeep engineers (it's essentially the same car as the Avenger launched in 2022), but the special edition has some TNF flair (and function).

“I guess where we’re going with this is this concept of iconic design meets protection in the outdoors,” says Shooter.

What it does is sport some fun features for lovers of adventure, above and beyond accents in the Summit Gold colorway first developed in 1985 for the Mountain Jacket to make athletes visible on the mountain. Here are our five favorites:

1. Your feet are "always on the mountain"

Whenever you’re out in the wilderness exploring the mountains, a topo map is essential, and Shooter says that’s why the designers of this Jeep took a scanner up Mont Blanc – where Alpinism began 250 years ago – and got a 3D image of the mountain’s topography.

The mountain’s contour lines feature like a motif throughout the design including on the floor mats of the driver and passenger side, so that even when you’re stuck in traffic on I-70 trying to get to the mountains on a powder day, your feet are always on Mont Blanc. Gimmicky? Sure, but cute? Also sure.

2. The seats are as plush as your favorite puffer

In addition to looking to nature, designers drew inspiration from some of The North Face’s most iconic pieces of gear, including the Nuptse puffer, and have incorporated them into the car. All five seats feature cushioning with baffle construction similar to the iconic down jacket and when we got to hop in the driver's seat, we found it to be noticeably plush and comfortable for long, rugged adventures.

3. You can stash your gear like a mountaineer

Missed out on shotgun? No worries, if you’ve been relegated to the back seat, the seatbacks in front of you have pockets made with the bungee-style webbing found on mountaineering backpacks like the TNF Borealis so you can tuck away your extra layers, water bottle, snacks and anything else you need for the journey.

4. No glare, stay aware

One thing the two brands impressed upon us was their shared interest in protection, and we can’t argue with that. If you’re going to tackle a gnarly dirt road to get halfway up a Colorado 14er so you can cut down your hike time, a Jeep is a pretty safe option to do so in. And if you’re going to spend hours on a mountain in sub-zero temperatures, take your chances on the Summit Torre Egger Futurelight Jacket to keep you warm and dry.

The hood of the Jeep is emblazoned with the North Face logo and the contour lines of Mont Blanc, which we’re assured doesn’t just look cool; it reportedly cuts down on glare when you’re cruising through snowy regions on sunny days. And that’s a good thing, too, because The North Face no longer makes sunglasses.

5. This car comes with extra gears

Okay, not literally. This automatic vehicle just has your standard drive, reverse and neutral gear settings, operated by buttons on the dash. But if you are one of the few to buy one of these vehicles it comes with a box full of kit from The North Face, including a Summit Series tent so you can park and pitch without worrying about your car and tent clashing.

We doubt it will make up for the price of the car, but it’s definitely a nice perk if you’re planning to buy this car for mountain adventures and not just to look cool in the city.

The North Face Summit Altimetro Long Sleeve Top: first impressions 

This highly technical and high-performing running top from The North Face is a pricey piece of kit, but it proved its value to serious runners on the back of Katie Schide who set a new record in it at this year's UTMB.

This long-sleeved top is built for cold weather runs and long-distance races where extra layers are required, and for that reason, it's specifically designed to meet the weight requirements of cold-weather mandatory race kits at less than 150 grams for a women's small.

The combination of DotKnit fleece in the lining, which absorbs sweat from your skin, and FlashDry Pro fabric, which sends it to the surface, means you stay warm and surprisingly dry even when you're working hard.

It's soft against the skin, and added stretch and body mapping mean it's always comfortable when you're on the go, and it has all the usual details you'd expect from a high-end running top such as thumb holes and reflective details. Made using recycled materials, it also has a smaller impact on the planet, but will make a huge impact on your running comfort this winter.

The North Face Summit Altimetro Long Sleeve Top: in the field

This year, I traveled to Chamonix to report live from the UTMB where Katie Schide made history by setting a new women's course record in beautiful Ives Klein Blue kit from The North Face.

After the race, I received a couple of pieces of the kit to test out myself. While I took the T-shirt on the trails straight away, I had to wait for the weather to cool off a bit before I could give the long sleeve a proper run for its money. I've now been wearing it for the past few weeks on chilly trail runs in Scotland.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I tested a small top, which is my normal size, and it's a perfect fit. It's not tight like a base layer, but that's because it's meant to be pulled on over a short sleeve when you meet with cold weather. That's not to say you can't wear it on its own of course, but the active fit combined with loads of stretch means I can move freely in it, and it's not so loose that I can't wear my Futurelight running jacket over the top, which I've done for a few wet sessions.

The sleeves are a little long, but again, this is intentional. Thanks to the thumb holes, it's meant that lately, I've been able to pull the sleeves over my hands for the first half of my run while I'm still warm and not have to wear running gloves.

This top is really comfortable, even worn next to my skin, thanks to the silky fabric and soft brushed fleece, and I'm not noticing any rubbing anywhere.

Warmth, breathability and moisture management

Now that the temperatures are dropping, I'm finding this top provides suitable warmth for cold runs. Yesterday was milder than I expected, and while I ended my run quite warm, I wasn't overheating, and that's thanks to brilliant breathability and the moisture-wicking system that dries in a literal flash, thanks to the FlashDry fabric.

To be clear, I'm not saying I'd wear this for warm weather – that's what the short sleeve is for – but it really excels at protecting me from the cold without baking me.

Weight, odor control and other details

At just shy of 150 grams, I'd think nothing of packing this top in my hydration vest for backup. It also doesn't hold onto moisture so doesn't grow heavy if it gets wet.

It's a synthetic top, so it's not one that you're going to be able to wear for a month straight without getting whiffy, but I've been able to get multiple uses out of it without having to launder it. There's no mention of it being treated with antimicrobial substances, so it might just be the fit, but I'm pleased with the odor-control.

It has reflective details on the front and back, so it's a good choice for road runners going into winter, and that's also a bonus for overnight races.

Finally, it's made using recycled materials, which is always a big bonus in my book.

This is a fantastic running top for cold weather and long-distance races. It's hard to argue with any of the design details when it performs so well against the cold without compromising breathability. The only flaw is really that it's pricey enough to make many runners think twice, but if you're looking for great quality top, you'll find it here.

• The best 2-person tents 2024: for backpacking and car camping

I’ve been trail running for years now, but in the last two years, early fall has brought a new routine. It looks like this: I travel to the French Alps to cover the iconic UTMB trail race around Mont Blanc, in my spare time I run on the best trails in Chamonix, and I come home even more excited than ever about trail running.

This year, American runner Katie Schide set a new women’s course record and kept pace with the elite men for most of the race. Schide is sponsored by The North Face, which meant she charged through three countries wearing the Summit Vectiv Pro shoes, but when it comes to her kit, what really stood out was her dazzling blue running shirt that turned out to be the new Summit Series High Trail Short-Sleeve in International Klein Blue.

International Klein Blue is a deep blue hue that was famously developed by French artist Yves Klein in Paris in the 1950s. The story goes that he spent years perfecting the shade and registered it in 1960, but never patented it. Inspired by the story of toiling for years to find the perfect formula, the Colorado-based outdoors brand released the shirt this summer, along with several other pieces of trail running kit including a long sleeve, running jacket and shorts. 

To be honest, when I first heard about the line, I didn't pay it much attention. It's just a color, and after that misguided collaboration between The North Face and Gucci, I'm perhaps too quick to disregard announcements that feel like a gimmick. But some of that cerulean magic seems to have rubbed off during the big race. 

When I returned home after the race, I was thrilled to discover my very own High Trail Short-Sleeve waiting for me. It’s certainly eye-catching, but would it do the job? 

I don’t know whether it’s the excitement of seeing what women trail runners are capable of or the beautiful blue color, but I’ve managed to get 50 km in on the trails wearing this shirt in the last couple of weeks already. I might not have circumvented Mont Blanc in it, but I’ve worn it on long and short runs on steep and rolling forested trails of Scotland as well as the southwest of England, in late summer warm days and more recently, cool and wet weather. Here’s why it’s my new favorite running top:

1. It dishes up all-day comfort

For any clothes that I’m going to be exercising in, comfort is a big deal, but this is especially the case with my running tops, which can't chafe and ideally won't get too damp.

When I first pulled this shirt out of the packaging, it was silky soft to the touch and that’s a great start. It feels lovely against my skin even when I’ve got pretty warm and sweaty, and body-mapped fabric means it fits like a glove, while underarm gussets improve mobility, and bonded seams cut down on rubbing. I haven’t experienced any chafing at all in this shirt and I now understand why Schide looked so comfortable for most of her 22-hour race.

Obviously, a big contributing factor to comfort also lies in how breathable a running top is, and since Schide wore it for a hot race (it was around 80 degrees on race day) I was pretty sure it would let body heat and sweat escape. In fact, all I needed to do was hold it up to the light and I could instantly see how well it was going to breathe with me on the trail, and I’ve since confirmed that over the miles.

It’s made using FlashDry fabric, which I’ve tested before, and it’s truly amazing how dry it feels when I get back from a long, sweaty run. This means I can pick up the pace or run in warm conditions without a soggy shirt clinging to my back, even when I’m wearing a pack. If I stop for a breather I don’t instantly get chilled. If you’ve been running in a cotton shirt or, like me, merino wool for running, you’ll be amazed at how much more comfortable this top is and it’s hard to find fault with its performance.

2. It’s kinder on the planet

Planet-friendly designs are really important to me. I get a lot of enjoyment (and make a living) out of the time I spend outdoors and I don’t want my recreational activities to have a negative impact on the planet I love. Obviously, that’s a tall order – all manufacturing affects the environment in some way, whether that’s through carbon emissions, water usage or the end user discarding textiles into landfills. However, there are ways we can minimize our effect.

Clothing made from natural fibers such as merino wool are generally kinder on the planet than the synthetic fibers that make up this top – synthetic materials are ultimately made from plastic and never biodegrade. So I was pleased to see that the front and sleeves of this top are made using 100 percent recycled polyester. It still won’t biodegrade, but at least it’s using fibers that already exist, rather than producing more.

How we use our gear actually plays a bigger role in its sustainability than how it’s produced, and where I often struggle with synthetic tops in this regard is that after I run in them, they stink (and yes, I do understand it’s actually me that stinks). This means I have to wash them after almost every use, which in turn means more microplastics being shed into our water sources, and the shirt then degrades faster and ends up in the landfill sooner.

This top manages to not get as smelly as other ones I’ve worn, and in fact I’ve yet to have to wash it. It’s definitely time to get it in the laundry basket, but I’m pleased to have been able to get multiple uses out of it without getting sick of the smell of myself.

3. It’s just a good-looking top

Looks definitely come ahead of performance and sustainability for me, but I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m pleased that this shirt looks great on me. The slim (but not skin-tight) fit and split hem are really flattering, and in a small way, that makes me feel good when I'm out and about in this top. 

The color? It definitely shows that years went into its artistic development. And unlike some other running gear I’ve tested from The North Face (like the Flex Mid Rise Tights), there’s no huge logo or in-your-face pattern. There’s just a small logo on the chest and rear shoulder that are reflective, so they serve the purpose of making me more visible when I set off at dawn and have to cross a few roads to reach the trails.

Is there anything I don't like about it? Honestly, it's a pricey piece of kit at $75 and while I know I'll get a lot of wear out it, I also know that does make it out of reach for many runners, but I can't argue with its performance.

Am I going to run the UTMB in this shirt next year? Absolutely not, but hopefully I’ll be following the runners once again and I’ll happily do so wearing brilliant blue.

• It's official – this Hoka trail running shoe was the winner of the 2024 UTMB (oh, and Western States and Hardrock 100)

Ulta runner Courtney Dauwalter has a way of getting people who've never even owned a pair of trail running shoes to sit up and take notice of off-road events – especially after last year's unprecedented triple crown of winning the UTMB, Hard Rock 100 and Western States. Now, her magic seems to have rubbed off on the Transgrancanaria race.

The Colorado-based runner kicked off 2024 with another win at the 126 km Canary Islands event, coming in two hours ahead of the next female runner and placing seventh overall. Her victory may have helped boost interest in the event, as organizers announced on Tuesday that all bibs have sold out six months in advance for the first time ever.

Last year, there were still bibs available in November, but now in its 26th year, all 4,600 bibs of the Transgrancanaria have been snapped up by elite runners willing to make the daring dash from the northeast of Gran Canaria to the southern tip across rocky, mountainous terrain. The course entails 22,526 feet of elevation gain, and last year's participants faced high winds and driving rain overnight.

According to the official press release, 55 percent of the registered runners are from outside the Canary Islands and athletes from 70 different countries will travel to the island to compete. There's no word yet on which runners will be competing, but we're expecting another great race.

Of course, word may just have gotten out about how beautiful Gran Canaria is. We explored the trails there this spring and discovered a paradise for hiking and trail running. If you were hoping to compete in the race, you'll have to wait until 2026, but you can always pack your hiking boots and check out the Gran Canaria walking festival this October in the meantime.

The North Face Transgrancanaria is scheduled to take place from February 19 to 25, 2025.

Not all collaborations from The North Face make sense (ahem, Gucci) but when they team up with some of the world's best climbers to find out what they want from an approach shoe, we're all ears.

While climbing shoes look like rubber ballet slippers and won't do you much good on the trail, approach shoes let climbers hike in, tackle scrambles and even do some easy climbing – but they're usually pretty technical, and not something you'd wear around town. 

That seems to be the missing piece, for climbers like Daniel Woods, Shawn Raboutou, Jimmy Webb, and Giuliano Cameroni who helped form the Mellow Climbing collective, a collaborative project between climbers and filmmakers.

The North Face Stormgap Power Grid jacket: first impressions 

A fleece jacket can mean a lot of things: bulky outer layer, ultralight base layer or streamlined mid layer. This lightweight fleece jacket from The North Face has gone for the latter, with a low profile, full-zip design that can add insulation under a waterproof jacket or shell, or make a light outer layer for early starts and cool summits during the summer the summer months.

Fleece's insulating power is easily its most appealing quality, but for any jacket you plan to wear during vigorous activity, you also require moisture-wicking capabilities and breathability, and this jacket offers those in bucket loads thanks to the power grid fleece lining. We've worked up quite a sweat in this jacket on a mild day and haven't even had to unzip.

The face fabric is tough enough to withstand ropes, rock and backpack strap and it's built to avoid the annoying pilling we expected from our fleece jackets in the 1990s. A high collar seals out a draft, while the cuffs and hem are elasticated and sit flush against the body, though they do lack adjustability and thumb holes.

Added stretch is enough that you can move dynamically in this fleece and three zipped pockets provide ample storage space for phones, cards and hands. There's no mention of antimicrobial treatment but for a synthetic garment, this one doesn't get too smelly with a single use, which is always a bonus. Made with recycled content and at a moderate price point, we can't find much to argue about with this high-performing fleece.

As a hiker, I can never get enough of fleece jackets, but some are too bulky, others too light, and those ones quite often end up at the bottom of the drawer, rarely seeing the light of day. 

I got to test this fleece out on a recent press trip to Corsica where the early spring temperatures were still quite mild (there was even snow up high one night) and an extra layer was needed for our hiking, mountain biking and via ferrata activities. Since then, I've had it out as an outer layer (occasionally with a rain coat) on some mild hikes here in Scotland.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I usually wear a small, that's what I tested and I think it fits perfectly. It's flush against my body everywhere without being annoyingly tight or catching anywhere. The high neck doesn't chafe and prevents a cold breeze, the sleeves are fairly long so I could hide my hands inside them when I want (this could mean annoying bunching around the wrists when layering, however) and it comes down to about mid hip. There's nothing I'd change except perhaps the sleeve length, but I'm also the first to admit to short arms.

I haven't had any issues with comfort personally. The elasticated cuffs aren't too tight on me but it does occur to me that someone with a thicker wrists might find them restrictive.

Moisture management and breathability

When I wore this fleece in Corsica, it was cool out and I welcomed the warmth, however to test its breathability I recently wore it, zipped all the way up, on a steep hike in 60-degree weather. At first, I thought I might struggle, but I was actually really impressed with its breathability and didn't feel like I wanted to tear it off at any point. I got a bit of a sweat on, but it never built up on the inside of the fleece and when I got back to the car, the back and armpits were dry in a flash.

Weight and packability

This fleece is on the light (but not ultra light, admittedly) end of the spectrum and while fleece isn't the most packable material, it actually rolls up smaller than a Nalgene bottle, so I'd consider bringing it along on a hike where I wasn't sure if I'd really need it.

Odor control and pockets

We all know that synthetic fabric gets smelly with use, and this is one area where I don't love fleece. That said, after sweating in this jacket, it actually wasn't too stinky the next day and I was happy to wear it again.

One place where this fleece shines is in all the pockets. I've got so used to lighter fleeces having no pockets that at first I missed how many this has. Two deep zipped hand-warming pockets hold my phone without stretching out, and I can put a credit car in the chest pocket.

The North Face Stormgap Power Grid jacket: the bottom line

Performance talks, and we found this fleece to be warm but exceptionally breathable and durable, making it a good choice for high intensity adventures. The addition of good storage makes it as valuable as an outer layer and a mid layer, and we're pleased with both the recycled content and the price point. For something a bit softer, the Montane Fury Lite jacket is worth a look, too.

The North Face has unveiled a new collection of rugged shoes and sandals that are made with outdoor adventures in mind. The RE-Activ collection is a set of three shoes made from durable, washable EVA, but has also caught the attention of sneakerheads the sneakerheads at sites like Highsnobiety, intrigued by the "foam-tastic" footwear.

The star of the collection is the new RE-Activ Slide – a soft shoe meant for comfortable ambling before and after a long run or hike. It has an open-toe design, but with an unusual cover over the big toe that's intended to provide extra support as you push off with your foot.

It has a two-layer sole unit with a mild rocker shape, and is made using rubbery bio-based EVA. It comes in black, white, blue, and the unusual mottled brown and purple colorway shown below.

Next up, we have the RE-Activ Sneaker Sandal. Like other shandals, it's designed for use on land and in water, with cutouts that allow water to sluice through and drain easily (our roundup of the best water shoes contains lots more examples). 

Again, it features a rocker-shaped dual-layer sole unit, with different densities of EVA intended to absorb shock as you walk. Its elasticated lace system should keep it nice and secure, and The North Face recommends it for daily use, as well as "for tired feet after mountain climbing or trail running".

Finally, there's the RE-Activ Flip which, as the name suggests, is a flip-flop. It's recommended for wearing after hiking or running, and may make a good camp shoe for wearing around the tent. It comes in black, white, and neon yellow.

The North Face Frontier Futurelight Jacket: first impressions 

Lightweight, soft, comfortable rain shells are having a moment in the outdoors and in general, we're big fans, so long as they hold off the worst of the weather and you're not planning on doing any winter mountaineering in them. This waterproof jacket joins the lineup of light, packable shells we've tested that provide a lot of protection for those hiking in spring through fall or in milder climates without adding a lot of weight to your kit bag.

Rather than using Gore-Tex, The North Face has developed its own waterproof polyurethane membrane that is presented in a three-layer format here which is surprisingly light and works well to keep moisture out.

Better yet, we've found this jacket to be impressively breathable in warmer temperatures, which makes it ideal for high-intensity activities like hiking. That said, the pit zips are unusually small – only about two inches long – presumably to save weight, which renders them all but useless. However, the fabric is breathable enough that they're not really needed, which then makes you wonder why they're there at all?

The fit of this jacket is a little on the loose side around the chest, though that does help with layering, and the cut is a little lower to cover your hips. The hood, cuffs and hem are all adjustable to help you cut out the wind, but we wish the hood was a little bigger and had a peak, as once the wind starts blowing there's nothing to protect your face.

Between the hand-warming pockets and inner mesh pockets, there's enough room to stash your stuff, and you can pack the jacket into one of the mesh pockets, though we're not convinced it's any better than rolling it up. The price tag is on the premium side, which might give you cause to pause and consider other options, but it's worth trying on if you want something really waterproof but light, and we're always happy to see some recycled materials in the mix.

I'm generally always open to testing waterproof jackets, because I live in Scotland, but sometimes that doesn't give me ample opportunity to examine their breathability, particularly during cold springs like the one we've just had. 

Fortunately, I got to test this jacket on a trip to Corsica, where my first hike took place on a cooler, rainy day. Since then, I've been able to wear it around Scotland and the Lake District for several wet but mild hikes.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing, fit and comfort

I usually wear a small, though I'm on the small end of small if that makes sense. Anyway, I tested a small and I'd say that the jacket is generally true to size, but the fit is a little baggy around my chest. That makes it easy to layer over a fleece jacket, but I do wonder if sizing down wouldn't be better.

It's a little longer than some lightweight jackets, meaning my hips are covered which I appreciated in the Lake District when I wanted to plop down on some wet grass and not get a wet bum.

This jacket is of the soft and stretchy variety so it's really comfortable on and I haven't experienced any annoying chafing anywhere. In fact, there's even a soft strip of fabric added to the back of the neck to cut down on rubbing.

Waterproofing and breathability

The two most important features for me in a waterproof jacket are its ability repel moisture and breathe well. This fabric does a nice job of fending off the rain, with the only real waterproofing "issue" stemming from the hood not offering quite as much coverage as I'd like. It was fine in Corsica, but when wind comes into play here in Scotland and I get a driving rain, I'd like a slightly bigger hood with some kind of peak to keep the wet out of my eyes.

However, where this jacket excels is in breathability. I was able to wear it for my entire ascent in Corsica even though it was quite mild, and it didn't even occur to me to unzip the pit vents. That turned out to be a good thing, because when I got home and examined the pit zips, I realized they're far too small to really do anything. I think it would be worth either making them much bigger, or trusting the fabric to do its thing and leaving them out altogether.

Weight and packability

This isn't the lightest waterproof jacket I've tested, but it's definitely close and that's a huge plus for me as I never hike without one in my backpack and it's really nice to keep things as light as possible.

As for packability, like many garments today it advertises that it fits into its own pocket, and like most such items I find that it technically does, but I'm not sure that's really the best way to pack it. I think it's easier to just roll it up, and then it's about the size of my 720 ml water bottle.

Pockets and sustainability

Two zipped hand-pockets plus two inner mesh pockets are more than enough to carry what I need to have to hand, which is basically my phone and gloves. If you like to carry a paper map, the inner pockets are big enough. As usual, it's difficult to reach the pockets if you're wearing the hip belt on your backpack, though I found that wearing my Trail Lite Speed 20-Litre Backpack from The North Face worked fine because the chest strap is enough. That said, a chest pocket wouldn't go amiss.

The main body of this jacket is made with 100 percent recycled polyester, which is a good nod for sustainability, though it would be nice to see a PFC-free DWR used too.

The North Face Frontier Futurelight Jacket: the bottom line

There's a lot to like about this waterproof jacket, namely, it's lightweight, comfortable and very breathable, making it excellent for mild and warm weather. Assuming you're not in need of a winter shell, this should provide good protection, but it's worth sizing it up against the Kathmandu Trailhead Stretch 2.5 Layer which is a similar jacket but a 2.5-layer and half the price.

The North Face Trailjammer T-shirt: first impressions 

Sweaty adventures require the work of a technical tee with breathability at the forefront, and in this hiking shirt, The North Face has prioritized keeping you cool whether you're hiking, mountain biking or clinging to the cliffside.

Built from perforated polyester, which essentially has lots of tiny holes in it, this sporty, performance-oriented top is very airy when the sun is beating down on you during a steep climb, and easily whisks sweat away from your skin to help cool you down.

A crew neck and medium-length sleeves provide decent protection from the sun, while it's designed with side splits and a dropped tail to be appropriate for mountain biking. This also means you have extra coverage when hiking with a backpack. A streamlined (but not snug) fit leaves plenty of room for comfort and mobility, with lots of stretch added in.

For the most part, flatlock seams cut down on chafing, but the front of the neckline feels a little stiff and rough and some hikers might experience some chafing. Like any synthetic fabric, it gets stinky quickly but we're pleased to see it's largely constructed using recycled materials. It's made of tough stuff and performs well as a first layer or on its own across a variety of adventures.

I got to test this hiking top out on a press trip to Corsica with The North Face in early April, where I wore it as a first layer on a cool hike and mountain bike ride, then on its own during a hot, sunny via ferrata. 

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a small, which is my regular size, and I think it's true to size. In fact, for once it actually fits me light the model on the website. It's not tight, but not so loose that it won't wick sweat and in general I'd say it's a comfortable fit where I can move but also layer something on top.

The sleeves aren't too short, so they give a little sun protection, and the back is a bit longer than the front which is intended for mountain bikers, but also comes in useful when hiking with a backpack.

Comfort and breathability

I spent several days adventuring in comfort while wearing this shirt. It has plenty of stretch and the fabric feels nice against my skin. The only potential issue I spotted is that the seam on the front of the neckline is really stiff when I run my fingers over it and feels a little rough to the touch. I didn't personally experience any chafing on my adventures, but I can imagine that if this were to fit a little tighter, it might cause problems for some.

I wore this as a first layer with The North Face Bolt Polartec Power Grid Pull-On Jacket while hiking and with The North Face Windstream Shell Jacket review while mountain biking. Later, I wore it on its own on a via ferrata where it was hot and sunny. In all of those configurations, I never got overly hot or sweaty. I think the perforated polyester works great for breathability and sweat-wicking.

Odor control and durability

This shirt is made using synthetic fabric, albeit a recycled one, and that means that it does get a bit stinky quite easily, and will stay that way until you wash it. I wore it over three days and while I wasn't exactly humming, it was ready for a wash. I did let it sit for a couple of weeks before washing it as an experiment, but that wasn't enough to air it out.

That of course means that you'll have to wash it frequently, which always cuts down on its durability, but overall it's a pretty tough top. That said, The North Face's FlashDry fabric is designed to be snag-resistant, but I did manage to snag mine on a very thorny bush while biking. However, I also drew quite a bit of blood so I'm under no illusions that any shirt would have held up against that.

If you're looking for a tough, versatile top that you can wear for hiking and biking in hot weather, this one affords you lots of breathability. The sporty design may not be for everyone, but the focus on performance will please those who want to get moving. The North Face Windstream Shell Jacket: first impressions 

While serious mountain conditions call for a hardshell, many of your mountain adventures can be made safer and more comfortable with a simple windbreaker. This windproof jacket is built to keep you safe from windchill when a breezy summit turns out to colder than you expected, and breathable enough to wear on chilly hikes and mountain bike rides where you don't want to be restricted or weighed down.

Made using The North Face's proprietary WindWall fabric, a nylon/polyester ripstop blend, this jacket is made from strong stuff, yet it's one of the lightest windreakers we've tested. It blocks acold wind but remains breathable when you're hiking or pedaling uphill.

The elasticated hood is comfortable, but stays put when it's breezy and elasticated cuffs and hem help to block any drafts. That said, the cuffs may be a little loose on some wrists if it's not layered over a bulker fleece, and the hem might be more effective if it was adjustable. Treated with PFC-free DWR, it will repel a light rain too so it's an excellent choice for active travel where you don't need to bring a heavier waterproof jacket.

There isn't much in the way of pockets, to keep things as light as possible, but a zipped chest pocket will fit most phones, and when you're not using it, it packs away into a mesh pocket inside its own hood. It's not the cheapest wind shell we've tested, but far from the priciest. All in all, we're impressed by this lightweight approach to windproofing.

The North Face Windstream Shell Jacket: in the field

I got to test this windbreaker out on a press trip to Corsica with The North Face in early April, where conditions were still cool and while a waterproof jacket would have been overkill, a windproof layer was welcome. I ended up wearing it on an afternoon hike where we had some light rain, as well as an early morning mountain bike ride before things heated up. I've even tried it out on a few cold trail runs in Scotland when there was a light rain falling.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a small, which is my regular size, and I think it's true to size. It has a streamlined design but still leaves a little room for movement and layering, which is obviously important.

The sleeves are quite long on me, coming all the way down to my fingertips if I let them, but when I shrug them up they stay put. The hem comes all the way down to just below my bum, which means extra protection, and it zips up to just below my chin with a snug, but not uncomfortable hood. In this jacket I'm able to reach my arms overhead and lean forward on my handle bars without any restriction.

Weight and packability

This jacket is one of the lightest windbreakers I've tested, with the women's small tipping the scales at a meager 100 grams, so I'd never think twice about throwing it in my pack for a backpacking adventure.

Better yet, it packs away into a mesh pocket inside its own hood and ends up about the size of an apple. Obviously, it squashes down even smaller than that, so you can really squeeze it into the tightest of packs no problem.

Weather protection and breathability

The ripstop fabric provides good wind protection, and I'm planning on using it to hold off the Scottish wind this summer both on mountain peaks and coastal walks, when there isn't rain in the forecast. The main issue I've discovered is that, on my wrists anyway, the cuffs aren't flush against my skin if I'm not wearing it over a fleece, while the hem isn't adjustable or flush to my hips, so there definitely is potential for a whipping wind to find its way in.

So far, I've been able to stay comfortable on the trail, and it's also pretty breathable too – something I've actually put to the test by wearing it on a couple of cold, damp runs in Scotland. It's not intended for trail running, but I figure if I can wear it for that activity then I'm more than happy with the breathability when I'm hiking and biking.

Durability and storage

Though the fabric is extremely thin and lightweight, the ripstop construction means that it's not fragile. I'm not saying you couldn't rip it up if you hit a thorny branch going 20 mph on your mountain bike, but I do think it has a good chance of staving off damage even when you're out having a really good time.

The only pocket is a zipped chest pocket, which is big enough for my iPhone but I don't actually use it. The lack of hand-warming pockets could be an issue for some, but that's the trade-off for shaving off the grams and keeping it lightweight. 

The North Face Windstream Shell Jacket: the bottom line

I'm really loving this windbreaker for its performance, fit and looks and I plan to give it plenty of action this summer. It has a few flaws in the cuffs and hem, which means that some people might get the odd draft if it's really blowing, but to be honest, this is built for fair-weather adventures and not brutal conditions anyway. If it's a very lightweight windbreaker you're in the market for, it's worth comparing this to the Montane Lite-Speed Trail Pull-On.

The North Face Trail Lite Speed 20-Litre Backpack: first impressions 

It's not every day you find a piece of gear that's both technical and super practical, but in this daypack, The North Face seems to have pulled it off. This 20-liter pack is extremely comfortable to carry and packs away a lot of gear, holding it all close to your body so that you can use it for hiking, mountain biking and even climbing.

The build of this pack is more like a body-hugging hydration pack, but with all the storage of a backpack, which makes it ideal for moving fast. Storage comes in the form of a main compartment, plus a front pocket that secures at the top with a hook. Then there are expandable mesh side panels plus two more pockets (one zipped) on the shoulder straps so there's oodles of space for phones, water bottles, keys and anything else you want close to hand. It's hydration bladder-compatible though, so you can use the side pockets for rolled up waterproof jackets and towels if you want.

For securing technical gear, there's a mesh pocket for your helmet and attachments for an ice axe or trekking poles, while the front pocket also doubles as a rope carry. Once you get going, a breathable back panel ensures you won't get too sweaty, while a hip belt plus two sternum straps can be moved up or down for the perfect fit. Once you've loaded up, cinch everything down with the compression straps.

There are other small details like DWR treatment to protect your gear during a light shower and reflective details to make you more visible and it's made using recycled materials, which we love to see. It's one of those packs that works whether it's half empty or stuffed full and we had to work hard to find any fault at all – in the end, all we could come up with was that it doesn't have a built-in safety whistle or hydration bladder included, but those are problems with quick solutions. If you're looking for a functional pack for fast adventures, we can't think of a better one and we hope it stands up to the test of time.

The North Face Trail Lite Speed 20-Litre Backpack: in the field

I got to test this daypack out recently on a press trip in Corsica with The North Face, and it was a perfect way to explore the possibilities of this pack. Not only did I get to test it as my carry-on during the flight, on a hike, a mountain bike ride and a via ferrata, but I was with a group of other journalists and athletes who were all different shapes and sizes and testing the same pack. This gave me ample opportunity to experience it for myself across different activities, as well as chat to others about how they liked it.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit

This pack comes in two sizes, which is already a good start, and I tested the smaller size which as a 5' 4" woman was ideal. I was climbing alongside men who were a good foot taller than me, and the larger size seemed to work for them too.

The fit is fantastic. It contours perfectly to my body so that it wears a bit more like a hydration vest than a backpack, but it has all the perks of the latter. Two sternum straps move up and down to accommodate boobs, which also gave me added support when I didn't want to use the hip belt while I was wearing a harness. It helps the load close to my body whether I'm riding my bike over extremely rough trails or climbing a via ferrata.

Storage and fastenings

This is a 20-liter pack, which isn't huge, but that's not the whole story. It holds a ton more gear than my Osprey pack of the same capacity, thanks to a clever design and lots of pockets. First, there's the hydration bladder which I loaded up with my laptop for the light then my Camelbak Crux 1.5L for the trail. That meant I didn't lose space packing my water bottle. The main compartment is perfectly roomy for all my hiking essentials, while the front flap fastens with a hook that means there's extra room for clothing like my fleece jacket. 

My helmet was on my head, so I didn't need the helmet carry attachment until I had to make a creek crossing when I found it useful for stashing my hiking boots to keep them dry. Meanwhile, the stretchy mesh side pockets are great for water bottles, but I used them to stash my hiking sandals as I had some swimming planned. The pockets on the shoulder straps are brilliant because they're big enough for soft water bottles or, in my case, a phone, which means you can keep gear close to hand. Our group all agreed these pockets were the clear winners.

All in all, I had it stuffed pretty full, but thanks to the contoured design and compression straps, I was able to carry it all comfortably on the trail, climbing and on my bike. This is one of those rare packs that's functional whether it's half-empty or stuffed full.

There are other attachments for climbing gear like an ice axe and trekking poles, though I haven't used them yet. The buckles and fastenings are straightforward and either made from plastic or steel. They're easy to operate and seemingly robust.

Durability and other features

With proper buckles and a sensible design, I hope this pack is as robust as it appears because I'd like to use it for a long time, and it's bound to take a beating. Mine has shown some early signs of fraying around the strap pockets and one of the chest straps has detached and is tricky to get back on, so I have some reservations about its durability.

As for other features, I've mentioned most of them, though I'll add that it's treated with DWR as most packs are. I didn't get more than a light sprinkle on my trip, but with my non-scientific lab tests I'd say it repels water as well as any similar pack. There is no built-in whistle, which I've come to expect thanks to Osprey, and you need to buy the hydration bladder separately, but that's par for the course and not a dealbreaker with such an otherwise brilliant design.

The North Face Trail Lite Speed 20-Litre Backpack: the bottom line

It's hard to find fault with this day pack. It's roomy but contoured, light and breathable and so comfortable across practically any outdoor activity. If you're weighing your options, check out the Osprey Manta 24.

The North Face Trailjammer Shorts: first impressions 

Looser and better designed than last year's Stolemberg Alpine Slim Straight shorts from The North Face, these hiking shorts make a cool option for various warm weather activities. With good coverage but a loose fit, you'll enjoy adequate sun protection but avoid overheating.

The breathability of the nylon fabric is enhanced by laser-cut holes and a good serving of elastane means you can wear these for rock climbing as well as hiking and biking.

For stashing gear, there are four zipped pockets to choose from: two on the hips and two on the thighs which make accessing your phone easier even when you're mountain biking on rough terrain. 

The stretchy waistband is really comfortable, but it's not adjustable, so size carefully and we do recommend sizing down. The men's version doesn't have a real fly, and we'd like to see some recycled content used, but we've enjoyed various activities wearing these in warm weather and been comfortable all day long.

The North Face Trailjammer Shorts: in the field

Last year I tested The North Face Stolemberg Alpine Slim Straight shorts and liked them a lot, but had issues with the waistband and fit. These shorts strike me as the new-and-improved version. We haven't got to shorts weather in Scotland yet, but I recently tested them on a hike, a mountain bike ride and a via ferrata during a press trip to Corsica with The North Face.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a small and I would say these shorts run a little large. It wasn't a problem, but I'm aware that the waistband doesn't tighten, so if they were any larger I would have had difficulty keeping them up. I'd be better off with an XS. 

The fit, however, is flattering around the waist and hips, coming down to the top of my kneecap for decent sun protection. The legs aren't as flappy as they appear when you pull them out of the packaging and I had no problem wearing these with a climbing harness. They're also loose enough to be worn over padded bike shorts, or leggings if you like that look.

Comfort and breathability

The loose fit is comfortable and airy, with no annoying catching or rubbing around the waist and hips and if you do size down, there's loads of stretch. The fit also means that there's barely any chance of getting sweaty, never mind needing the moisture-wicking properties that nylon provides. The breathability is enhanced by small, laser-cut holes on the backs of the things and sacral area, which is handy when wearing a backpack. 

Weather protection and durability 

I do find it interesting that these shorts are treated with a DWR, since I can imagine that I'd only wear them on warm, sunny days, but it didn't seem to affect their breathability during a warm via ferrata. They're also quick drying, which I tested after having to cross a river during our mad mountain bike ride, which is a huge plus if you're wearing them for water sports.

They're a sturdy enough construction, but one thing that gives me pause regarding their durability is the high content of elastane. While this makes them really versatile, it can also mean they don't stand up to as many washes before losing their shape. That said, because they're on the baggy side, they might not get as sweaty and need as much washing.

Storage and other details 

Probably my favorite feature of these shorts is the excellent pockets. The hip pockets are fine for hiking, but once I got on my mountain bike I wanted someplace else for my phone and the thigh pockets are perfect. They keep the phone out of the way but still within easy reach, and all four pockets are zipped for security.

There aren't any other real features to speak of, and I did notice that the men's version doesn't have a real fly, which I'm guessing could be annoying on long adventures, but the same is true for lots of shorts especially bike shorts.

The North Face Trailjammer Shorts: the bottom line

Loose, comfortable, stretchy and breathable, these shorts are a good choice for anyone planning lots of warm weather adventures where they might be seeking one outfit to wear across several activities, and if those activities include getting wet, you'll quickly be dry again. They don't use any recycled content and they're a little on the pricey side, but we can imagine wearing them for the entire summer.

When you think of The North Face, you might think of many things: technical mountaineering kit, Jimmy Chin, Half Dome and Gorpcore, just to name a few. What you probably don't think of, however, is an emphasis on natural fabrics. Until now, that is.

The California-based brand has just announced a new collaboration with New Zealand's Icebreaker that it describes as "a groundbreaking revolution in adventure wear." Your typical fleece jacket or running top from The North Face is usually made using synthetic materials like polyester and nylon, both heralded for their sweat-wicking, durable performance, but ultimately made from plastic, which never breaks down once it ends up in the landfill. Icebreaker's success, meanwhile, has been built on the capabilities of merino wool.

Merino wool has excellent thermoregulating and odor-control properties so it's also a great choice for the outdoors, where you're likely to meet with variable conditions and work up a sweat, but it has the added factor of being biodegradable. The North Face x icebreaker's Spring Summer 2024 Capsule Collection is 100 percent plastic-free, featuring products made with a blend of merino wool as well as TENCEL Lyocell, a fiber made of responsibly sourced wood pulp, that results in light and breathable adventure wear.

The collaboration includes men's and women's tees, technical shorts and pants made from 100 percent Merino as well as the lightweight Merino 200 RealFleece Zip Hoodie which stows in its own pocket for easy storage while traveling. If active travel is in the plans for you this summer, there's also the Merino 200 Dress for cooling off in after a hot hike.

One other property of merino wool that you may not be aware of is that it is pricey, and this is definitely reflected in the line. So far, the clothing capsule looks to be available in Canada and the UK on both company's websites, with prices ranging from $145 Canadian for the T-shirts to $380 for the fleeces.

The North Face Verto Gore-Tex Alpine Mid Boots: first impressions 

Some hikes require more protection than your average hiking boot provides, and these boots are not your average hiking boots. Built for hiking and via ferratas, the leather uppers are well-reinforced to support your ankles and protect your feet from rocks. Meanwhile the grippy Vibram soles aren't just for slick surfaces – a climbing zone at the toe is good for easy edging.

You might be surprised, then, to learn that they're also really lightweight. For as rugged as they are, we experienced out-of-the-box comfort in them while wearing them for a full afternoon on one of Corsica's via ferratas. 

Though they excel on dry, rocky surfaces where you might encounter surprisingly slippery areas, a full Gore-Tex waterproof lining means they're not a bad choice for a boggy hike either. The membrane has been watertight on your tests so far, but the top couple of inches of the tongue and top inch of the ankle cuff aren't waterproof, so it's possible that you could get wetter than planned without gaiters in really torrential conditions, but every boot is eventually breachable.

The lacing system leaves plenty of options for a customized fit, however the toe box is on the narrow side, so make sure you size up as always. Despite the rock plate in the sole, the uppers have a surprising amount of flex which makes for a comfortable ride. You may not need this much protection for an everyday hike, but if you're planning on adventuring on rock, check these out for a comfortable option.

The North Face Verto Gore-Tex Alpine Mid Boots: in the field

I recently got to test out these boots during a press trip with The North Face to Corsica, where we tested their new kit out across a variety of activities: hiking, mountain biking and on a via ferrata. 

Though it's not recommended, I didn't break the boots in before the trip – I just pulled them on for the via ferrata and spent the next fours hours clambering over rocks and ziplining across gorges in them.

Here’s how they performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a size 4 UK which is my go-to size for hiking boots to give my feet room to swell. At first glance, I was worried because the toe box appears really narrow, which is something I hate, but actually I didn't find them restrictive at all and I think they're wider than they look around the base of my toes. In any case, once laced, I was able to achieve a nice snug fit around my ankle and heel with room for my foot to swell. They come up about an inch higher than my ankle bone.

Comfort and temperature regulation

I wouldn't have been surprised if I had a bit of rubbing or chafing with these boots, since I didn't give them any break-in time and they come up higher than I'm used to, and I wouldn't have complained about it either. However, I managed to wear them for hours on my first go without any complaints whatsoever. They're nicely padded, with enough flex in the upper that I was able to walk comfortably on some fairly grueling terrain. 

On that first day, it was actually sunny and quite warm, and I didn't need the waterproofing. Obviously, you lose some breathability with a waterproof membrane, but I really wasn't experiencing sweaty or uncomfortable feet. Lately, I've been wearing them for boggier hikes in colder weather back in Scotland and they're good at keeping my feet warm.

Weatherproofing and protection

The waterproof membrane has held up to my tests so far, which mostly just involve walking on wet trails and through very shallow streams. However, I did notice that the membrane appears to end a couple of inches from the top of the tongue and about an inch from the top of the ankle cuff. If so, it's definitely possible that a deeper bog or a wetter day could eventually spell a breach for your feet if you're not prepared with gaiters. 

On the via ferrata, I was more concerned about protection from rocks than rain and was really pleased with how these sheltered my feet from a bashing. They're well reinforced all the way around so I could walk without worrying, while some of my group had opted to wear lighter hiking shoes due to the warm weather and regretted their decision.

The high cuff and lacing system also meant my ankle was held in place nicely, which in turn meant I could walk on really challenging terrain without worrying about stumbling.

Grip and stability

A Vibram sole is always a good start for a grippy outsole, but it's not the be all and end all of traction. In this case, I've found the rubber material and deep lugs to grab onto steep, rocky surfaces, and while I don't exactly understand the technology of the climbing zone at the toe, I was surprised at how well I could climb in them. Back at home, they handle mud well, which is a relief, as I'm much more likely to encounter mud than a via ferrata in Scotland.

Thanks to the rock plate and not too much of a drop, I found a nice stable ride underfoot even when the terrain was anything but.

The North Face Verto Verto Gore-Tex Alpine Mid Boots: the bottom line

These boots might not make sense for every hike, but if you're planning on exploring a lot of rock and want something that's protective yet lightweight and comfortable, they're worth trying on. Lots of rocky hikes don't require waterproofing, but most similar boots come with membranes. The La Sportiva Trango Tower GTX are more expensive, but have a lot of similar characteristics if you want to weigh these up against another boot before making your final decision.

The North Face Bolt Polartec Power Grid Pull-On Jacket: first impressions 

This isn't the first Bolt Polartec jacket we've tested from The North Face, but so far, it's the best. Where we loved the light weight of the Bolt Polartec Hooded Jacket, it had some flaws – it used no recycled materials and the fabric seemed a little flimsy. However, the mountaineering brand has come back with all pistons firing with this updated model.

This fleece jacket is part of the new generation of fleeces, which uses the grid pattern on the lining and a smoother face material to create a garment that's a bit more durable, less prone to pilling, and excellent at trapping your body heat to your advantage. Though this one weighs just 150 grams in a women's small, we found it to be extraordinarily toasty on some recent chilly adventures in Corsica, where the weather was bringing snow to the highest peaks.

The design is as light as some base layers, and the low profile means it's easy to layer under bulkier layers or as an outer layer in summer, while the hood adds extra warmth and sun protection.  A small chest pocket means you can stash your credit card close to hand for convenience, and thumb holes make it easier to pull your down jacket over the top when it gets cold.

Like previous models, the hem isn't adjustable, so on some bodies, a cold draft could slip in on a breezy day. Compared to other fleeces we've tested, it's a reasonable price and they've upped the recycled content from zero to nearly 100 percent. It's quick drying, super packable and an excellent choice for fast-paced pursuits in cold weather, or as a warm layer for active travel.

The North Face Bolt Polartec Power Grid Pull-On Jacket: in the field

I recently got to test out this fleece on a press trip with The North Face to Corsica, where we tested their new kit out across a variety of activities: hiking, mountain biking and on a via ferrata. I've previously tested Bolt Polartec Hooded Jacket, which I liked but found a few issues with, so I was keen to see the upgrades. 

The trip took place in early April and the weather was still quite cool and damp, with snow falling on the highest peaks. We stayed a little lower to enjoy dry trails, but the conditions were perfect to test out gear like this, which is really intended for versatility and some intensity at cooler temperatures.

Here’s how it performed:

Sizing and fit

I tested a small, which is my usual size, and I'd say the sizing is accurate. It's slim fitting on me, but with a little room to wear it over a T-shirt, which I did. The hem isn't adjustable and is ever so slightly loose on me, which could theoretically mean I get a cold draft on a windy day in Scotland, but so far that hasn't been an issue. I also think that on most bodies, it would fit more snugly anyway. 

The sleeves are long enough that when I use the thumb loops my hands are covered, and the hood is perfectly snug so it stays up in a gale.

Warmth and breathability

I first put this on to go for lunch with the other journalists. After a few minutes, I turned to the woman next to me to comment on how toasty I was, even though the air conditioning was on in the hotel. She felt the same way. For such a thin, light fleece, it's amazingly warm, and I really think this is its biggest selling point. It makes it a really valuable layer for winter mountaineering and ski touring, but it also means that when I want to take an extra layer on active vacations where I don't want to check a bag, I know that I can get a lot of return for a tiny amount of added bulk and weight.

If you don't already know, Polartec grid fleece is really breathable too, so it needs to get warm out before you have to take it off. We did our Via Ferrata in the afternoon, and the sun had finally warmed things up, so I actually stripped down to my T-shirt to get some sunlight on my pasty skin, but several members of my group kept their fleeces on for the duration and said they were comfortable.

Comfort and weight

This fleece falls into that category of "I forgot I was wearing it," which is all you can ask for, really. The grid fleece is soft enough to wear against the skin if you want to wear it as a first layer, it's not too tight and it's really stretchy (I even wore it for a chilly sunrise yoga session on the beach).

I've already mentioned how light this is, but without a front zip it's actually the lightest fleece I've ever tested. Naturally, the hood adds a little extra substance, but it still rolls up smaller than my water bottle for packing.

Durability

In general, fleece is pretty durable, but it is prone to pilling and these grid designs with the smoother face fabric address that issue head on. It's not nearly as flimsy as the previous model and while it may not be as robust as a thicker fleece, it survived my whirlwind adventure in Corsica without so much as a scratch.

The North Face Bolt Polartec Power Grid Pull-On Jacket: the bottom line

If you're in the market for a lightweight and versatile layer that provides exceptional warmth and breathability without adding bulk, you'll have a hard time finding a lighter one this this.
