The Garmin Venu Sq 2 will be a successor to the original Venu Sq, which was released back in September 2020. It was a stylish little smartwatch, but its lack of an OLED display meant it wasn't quite as striking as the round-faced Venu and Venu 2.

Now, it looks like a sequel might be on the way. There's been no official announcement yet, but hints are starting to emerge that the Venu Sq 2 might be the next Garmin watch to appear in 2022. We'll be keeping this guide updated as soon as more hints and news emerge.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? A fashion-focused GPS sports watch
  • When will it be released? Possibly summer 2022
  • How much will it cost? Likely slightly over $149 / £129

News and rumors

The first mention of the Garmin Venu Sq came in a list of forthcoming devices that was leaked via an authorized Garmin dealer. The document gave warranty information for various watches, some of which had already been released earlier in the year, and some of which hadn't.

At the time it was impossible to verify the accuracy of the list, but it was the first document that mentioned the Garmin Forerunner 255 Music, which launched alongside the regular Forerunner 255, the Forerunner 955, and the Forerunner 955 Solar on June 1, 2022.

Although that doesn't confirm that all the watches mentioned will be released this year (or at all), it does give the source some credibility.

Then, on June 13, 2022, Advnture spotted that Garmin had registered two new devices with the FCC, meaning they're being readied for sale in the US. Both devices are listed as smartwatches, and the pair have very similar ID numbers, which suggests that they may be different iterations of the same model. Interestingly, only one of the pair has Wi-Fi.

The FCC hasn't published names or photos of the two devices, but it seems plausible that they might be the Venu Sq 2 and Venu Sq 2 Music. There were two versions of the original Sq, one with music storage and one without, so it's reasonable that the second-gen model might as well.

What we want to see

The main thing we'd like to see from the Garmin Venu Sq is an OLED screen. The original Sq uses the same color memory-in-pixel (MIP) tech as watches in the Fenix and Forerunner lines, and while this uses less power, it's not as vibrant and has a lower refresh rate that makes it less well suited to animations.

An OLED Venu Sq would be capable of showing workout animations like the Venu 2 and Epix, as well as offering animated watch faces. It might even earn a place on our list of the best GPS watches.

This would likely mean an increase in price. The original Venu Sq was just $149 / £129 at launch, making it one of Garmin's cheapest watches, but new screen tech together with the rising cost of fuel means we wouldn't be surprised if the Venu Sq 2 is significantly pricier.
