The Drennan Specialist Mk II Tench and Bream Rods will make big fish anglers prick up their ears.

There’s a 12 ft 1.75 lb and a 12 ft 2 lb model, the latter for ‘punching’ leads and loaded feeders out.

You’ll find a slightly stiffened butt section on this rod compared to its predecessor, providing that little extra casting ‘punch’ as well as improved accuracy.

The original rods, launched in 2009, became very popular with specialists targeting big bream and tench.

Both of the new designs come with ‘reassuring’, shock absorbing tips, with a progressive, semi-through action.

Designed to handle big fish on balanced gear, Drennan have opted for nine SiC guides on the lighter rod, and seven on the 2 lb test, for smooth line flow.

They’re built on high-modulus blanks, have a subtle, matt green paint finish, and boast Fuji DPS reel seats. I always find it nice to see full cork handles, too.

Whilst they’re called Specialist Tench and Bream rods, I reckon they shouldn’t be pigeon holed.

They’re likely to be a rod that you can get out of the bag for a few other species, too. They’re also well-priced rods.

Price: £129.
